NEARLY 900 Fraser Coast children a year are set to benefit from reduced price or free kindy, thanks to a more than $1 billion Government investment. Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari met with Grace Grace, Minister for Education, Industrial Relations and Training, and representatives of the kindergarten and early childcare sector, following the announcement to discuss what this exciting new announcement would mean for parents in the electorate of Hervey Bay. Mr Tantari said, “The Palaszczuk Government understand that kindy counts. The first few years of a child’s life are incredibly important and play a major role in their future.” “On the Fraser Coast this announcement means parents of 895 kids will receive reduced fees with 403 of those being

fee free.” “$33 million from this investment will expand the Kindy Uplift program from 400 to 930 services. Kindy Uplift funding means that services can invest in personalised programs so children can reach their full potential.” “In Hervey Bay currently, there are two kindy centres’ providing the program. This additional funding will support an additional 14 centres to facilitate the program.” Urangan’s TG’s Child Care and Kindergarten Director Alicia Moody said it was terrific news, “I think it will be very beneficial for all our families and we know families are very excited as it will make it more affordable.” She also hoped the Queensland Government would follow the lead of NSW and Victoria in extending the program to two years as it would be beneficial for some

children who are close to the cut off age before starting school and provide more support. Education Minister Grace Grace said, “We’re investing in our youngest Queenslanders, we’re investing in our families, and we’re investing in the Fraser Coast’s future.” “The new kindy funding reform package is in response to the 2019 ‘Optimising outcomes for children: A review of early childhood education funding and arrangements in Queensland.” “Total investment in kindy from 2023-2024 will be $307 million. This includes the investment from the Australian Government.” The kindergarten program funding overhaul is considered the most significant reform for the sector in more than a decade.

Search to see the sawfish

A NATIONWIDE public appeal for help to protect one of the world’s most distinctive and endangered group of rays has uncovered more than 100 sightings and historical photos within months, including what is believed to be Australia’s oldest image of a sawfish, found in Hervey Bay. Since mid-August last year, USC PhD student Nikki Biskis has uncovered a rich haul of data on the distribution of sawfish species in a search that has taken her from the waters of Mackay and Far North Queensland to museums and historical societies across the state. The search across the country led her to her own neighbourhood where, to her amazement, the presumed oldest image was found at the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum. “Sightings and historical photos are crucial for this project,” said Ms Biskis, who was amazed to find possibly Australia’s oldest photo in a collection of glass slides at a museum in Hervey Bay, where she is based at USC’s Fraser Coast campus. The photos are helping researchers better understand and protect sawfish, named for their unique saw-like snout (rostrum) extending up to over 1.5 metres. “It was a photo of a sawfish caught local to Hervey Bay from the 1890s, making it the oldest picture we’ve uncovered in Australia, and the first one from this area.” The image was captured at Toogoom sometime between the 1890s and 1905. DNA samples are also being taken from old ‘saws’ stored in museum collections as part of the collaborative study by USC PhD student Nikki Biskis and Sharks And Rays Australia (SARA) that is comparing historic and current sawfish distributions through untapped sources, such as family fishing photos. In another breakthrough, Ms Biskis was contacted by a family who recognised a photo used to promote the campaign that showed Bundaberg region fishermen with a catch of sawfish in the 1960s. It is believed to be one of the last photos taken of sawfish in subtropical Queensland. “I met the family of one of the men from the

photo and they were able to point out exactly where the animal was caught almost 60 years ago. I rarely get such detailed location data,” Ms Biskis said. “When people send through photographs of animals or saws with dates and locations from their collections, it tells a completely new story. It's like everyone's got a piece of this puzzle – but they don't know it.” Australia is considered a ‘life-boat’ for four of the world’s five species of sawfish, which were once widely distributed along Australia's east coast but are now considered among the most threatened groups of marine life. “With sawfishes having lost over half of their habitat

New Aqua Adventures at WetSide coming

WORK has started to install an Aqua Adventure Playground at WetSide in Hervey Bay. Playscape Creations was awarded the $1.3 million contract by the Fraser Coast Regional Council to install the playground which is anticipated to be operating by the middle of the year, weather permitting. The adventure playground has replaced the WaveRider which had reached the end of its serviceable life and needed to be replaced, Councillor Jade Wellings said. “It will add a new dimension to WetSide as it can be used by families, school groups, people with disabilities and groups of friends.” The course is made up of nine linked challenges which test strength, agility, coordination, and stamina.

Storage and respite for those in need of safety

HOMELESS people in Hervey Bay now have the use of free storage lockers to keep their belongings safe when they need it. The Hervey Bay Church of Christ decided to help ease the burden of the load by purchasing eight durable and secure lockers for people who find themselves homeless. The lockers cost $2900 and were made possible thanks to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program. The Hervey Bay RSL is the only club in Hervey Bay that runs a Community Grants Program, which has seen local sporting clubs, individuals, and community groups receive a share of a massive $4.7 million in the past eight years. Hervey Bay RSL CEO Jason Lynch said the grants committee viewed the churches’ project as an invaluable asset for the region, especially for those who are doing their best to overcome homelessness by seeking employment. “It’s important that we invest the necessary means through our grants program to ensure those experiencing homelessness have the opportunity to realistically get back on their feet,” Mr Lynch said. “These lockers will alleviate a lack of secure storage facilities in Hervey Bay for essential

routine in daily life. Pastor Crighton said the lockers are available for anyone doing it tough that needed them. “It does require some management around it; someone needs to look after them to an extent.” “We charge $20 for a deposit on a key. The deposit money is given back when the key is returned.” The length of time people could use them was negotiable, and people could use more than one if they needed to, said Pastor Crighton. “One guy uses them to store his power tools.” He said it was important for the community to be aware that not everyone comes to being homeless through a long-term problem, sometimes

it happens to people unexpectedly. The pastor wanted to help people in this predicament by also providing a place of connection and emotional support. The lockers are in front of the church in a verandah area with couches and chairs to make people feel comfortable. “It is about creating a place of personal connection with an individual, not just a sterile service but a place of safety.” “We hope we can also put some showers and toilets that would be accessible via a code or something like that.” He said they were planning to train volunteers to assist. The pastor hopes to see more lockers installed in other areas around Hervey Bay in the future.

There are certain people in Queensland that are ineligible for jury service because of their profession or for certain other reasons (such as having been convicted of a serious indictable offence) – but actor, model, social influencer or “being famous” does not appear on the ineligible persons list.

If you are summonsed you must show up, unless you have been granted an exemption or are otherwise excused. If you fail to appear, you could find yourself on the other side of the Court Room. According to the NSW Sherriff’s Office, in 2015 some of the more bizarre requests for excusal from Jury Duty were “I am allergic to Airconditioning” and “I will fall asleep in the trial”. Just to be clear, these requests were not supported by any empirical evidence and either resulted in fines ($2,200 for not showing up or $5,500 for providing false or misleading information) or resulted in no excusal being provided. If you genuinely are allergic to air-conditioning or have a medical condition that would prevent you from staying awake during the trial, you would need to provide medical evidence to support your request for excusal. Being a celebrity alone does not automatically excuse you from being selected for Jury Duty. BUSINESSES across Hervey Bay are rejoicing with the easing of the indoor mask wearing restrictions from last Friday. When it was announced in January that masks were required indoors across Queensland to slow the spread of COVID-19, many businesses feared it would stop customers from coming. For Angela Park, owner of Summer Jade Hair Salon in Pialba, the news of the restrictions easing could not come soon enough. “We are rejoicing, 100% celebrating masks off!” “We really didn’t like wearing the masks as they were itchy and we were getting rashes on our faces from the chemicals in the mask,” said Ms Park. “It felt stressful wearing them because we couldn’t breathe well, and they felt a bit claustrophobic wearing them all day.” Ms Park said wearing masks for clients having their hair cut was tricky as it was difficult to cut the hair around the masks properly. “Clients would have to take them off otherwise, they would have a COVID haircut – a reverse mullet with long hair over their ears!” Thankfully, she said their business had not suffered from the mandate, “hair is too important for them (clients).” Ms Park said she was impressed with the level of commitment to the mandate from the community, with only a few people not complying at

THE HERVEY Bay Library will be closed for four days from March 17 to 20 to allow contractors to assess the work required to replace the roof. Fraser Coast Regional Councillor David Lewis said the existing building was 27 years old with a recent inspection identifying the roof was coming to the end of its natural working life. “The Hervey Bay Library is one of the community’s mostloved facilities with up to 1500 people visiting daily during busy periods to borrow books, DVDs and toys, access digital services and attend events,” he said. “Across the Fraser Coast,

more than 41,000 people are library members – that’s about 40% of our population, which highlights just how popular our libraries are. “The Hervey Bay Library is a valuable community asset, and roof maintenance is required to keep the building in good working order.” Cr Lewis said the four-day closure would also include the returns chutes and Hervey Bay Library users should hold onto any library items until it reopened on March 21. No library items will be due back over the short shutdown period. “It will be business as usual at the other library branches in

Maryborough, Tiaro, Howard and Burrum Heads,” he said. “We thank the Queensland Government for providing $1.5 million through the Works for Queensland program to help us with this roof replacement project. “This assessment is the first part of what will be a staged work program at the Hervey Bay Library over the next 18 20 months, weather permitting. “We will be advising the community further when the next stage of the work is confirmed. We thank residents in advance for their patience during this time.”

As a gesture to give back to the community, Hervey Bay Men’s Shed donated two large hauls of furniture, bedding, household goods and clothes to flood victims. This would not have been possible without the help of a truck and two workers donated by Hervey Bay’s Betta Home Living store. Leon Baldwin, Hervey Bay Men’s Shed president said that when he saw the floods, he knew they needed to help and promptly tracked down the Happy Hearts organisation in Maryborough that accepted and distributed donations. “We had been collecting donations through the year for our upcoming annual Monster Garage Sale and decided this would be a worthy cause to help.” “We had so much stuff to donate that we contacted Mike at Betta Home Living to help

Stephy Horner, director of Happy Hearts, said they were overwhelmed with the caring attitude, “The supply was amazing; they really worked hard to pull not one but two big loads together.” Ms Horner said the donations had helped around 30 families and individuals

since the January flood, maybe more. The Men’s Shed still have plenty of handmade wooden goods and household items to sell in their Monster Garage Sale on the 19 and 20 March. “We use the proceeds of the garage sale for the betterment of the Men’s Shed and also to help other organisations; each month we donate $200 to a local charity.” “If something comes up like the floods, we like to be able to make a donation.” The main aim of the Men’s Shed organisation is to provide a friendly and safe place for men to come together. In addition to heart-to-heart discussions and fun times, the group share their talents and skills with other members while completing valuable projects for the community. Their monster Garage Sale will be held on Saturday 19 March from 8am to 4pm and Sunday 20 March from 8am til 1pm at the shedquarters of 28 Aalborg Rd in Nikenbah.

Neighbourhood Centre gets a boost to help the community

HERVEY Bay Neighbourhood Centre will benefit from a one-off funding boost to the tune of $20,000 to assist with providing valuable services to the community. The funds are part of a state government $2.54 million package to Queensland’s 127 state-government funded neighbourhood and community centres to help with increased demand for services as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Enoch who spoke at the Maryborough Neighbourhood Centre recently, said the state’s network of neighbourhood and community centres has been on the frontline supporting Queenslanders through the pandemic. “Our neighbourhood and community centres have been working incredibly hard to safely continue delivering services and supports to their local communities,” Ms Enoch said. “But they’ve also had to overcome some challenges and adjust their service delivery to respond to the individual needs and priorities of their local communities as a result of COVID-19 and the current disaster events in the state. “For example, the Maryborough Neighbourhood Centre has hosted the

Community Recovery hub for flood-affected residents, while also providing other supports and services for people impacted by COVID-19. “Neighbourhood and community centres have also faced increased costs in measures to keep their staff, volunteers and visitors safe, while experiencing reduced income from hire of rooms and other venues due to the pandemic. CEO of Neighbourhood Centres Queensland Em James welcomed the funding boost and said any investment in neighbourhood centres was a direct investment in Queensland communities. “Throughout the pandemic, neighbourhood and community centres have continued to go above and beyond for local communities,

ROBERT Ingersoll, a 19th century lawyer and orator said, “We rise by lifting others.” This has been a core value of nursing since the time of Florence Nightingale, inspiring and encouraging mentees to lead with purpose. Gary McKiernan and Linda Knilands are two such people in the Hervey Bay community who have discovered the many advantages of acquiring a life of purpose through volunteering at We Care2, a local community care service. After finishing long term work and at the age of 60, Linda Knilands said she still wanted to be involved in doing ‘something worthwhile’. When Linda began volunteering at We Care2 four years ago at their Extra Choice Food Shop that supplies lowcost groceries on Main street, she said she was surprised to find how this service helps those who struggle with the rising cost of food and necessities, “What We Care2 stands for has given me great fulfilment.” She explained, “I really feel for the elderly and before coming here I didn’t realise just how the store helps those on a pension who regularly visit and who must make their pension stretch. “Then there are those who don’t have a home and families doing it tough… If I wasn’t working here, I just wouldn’t have realised.” “I wish people knew and understood more of what they do and the way they [We Care2] help in the community.” Linda said she enjoyed meeting the people who use the service, “I’ve gotten to know people who are on their own or are lonely or who are sick.” “I like to listen to their stories and to chat to them; they have become familiar faces, and I

Gary is a retired nurse, “I found it difficult to get work, so volunteering has given me a reason to get out of bed… it’s given me a purpose and that makes my wife happy!” What surprised him about We Care2 was the scope of what they do, “I didn’t realise just how much is done here behind the scenes that isn’t seen, the real way people in need are helped.” Both Gary and Linda commended the store manager Peter Campbell for valuing the volunteers and making them feel part of something worthwhile. “Peter takes note of suggestions, he is one of the best bosses, he really listens,” said Gary. “But we need more volunteers to help fine tune the process.” Linda said they are very

grateful for all leftover groceries received but the operation could be improved with funding to help provide more variety in grocery items and smaller portions, “A pensioner on their own can’t use a 5kg bag of rice!” “We are relaxed, have a laugh. If someone is thinking of volunteering, they just need to come and try to see how much they might enjoy it,” said Linda. Besides the low-cost grocery store available for anyone on a low income or pension, other services include Emergency Relief for individuals and families who may become homeless; vouchers for pharmacy scripts; fuel for medical appointments out of town; and Telstra. Free generalised counselling is available too, and the We Care2 Food Van can be seen three days a week at the Apex Park on the Esplanade where a cooked, hot breakfast is provided for those who find themselves homeless. ALMOST to the day, 25 years later, the Birdwatchers of Hervey Bay met at the Arkarra Lagoons in Dundowran to celebrate their love of nature and bird watching. Since their inaugural meeting on 19 February 1997 at Arkarra, the group have identified numerous different bird species at various sites across the region. John Knight, convenor of the group, has recorded all the weekly meetings over the twenty-five years and was thrilled to mark the occasion. “It was a pleasure to share the celebration with some of the original birdwatchers of 25 years ago, most of whom continue this rewarding pastime. “Many of the original group have continued to enjoy bird watching on their travels round Australia and overseas.” Mr Knight’s records show that over the 25 years, 964 people have participated in the weekly bird watching meetings. With less than a dozen bird birdwatchers in the early years to meetings of greater than

25 members, is proof of the enduring popularity of bird spotting. Mr Knight is proud of the number of bird species identified each week. “In the early days, fewer than 30 odd species were identified each week. “Nowadays, as expertise and knowledge have improved, upwards of 70 species are identified at each site. “The larger number of birdwatchers boosts the observations.” More than 80 sites have been surveyed in the region over the past 25 years. The group chooses different sites each week by a show of hands. Some of the sites are within Hervey Bay such as Anembo and Kingfisher Lakes where there is preserved natural environment. Other sites include O’Regan’s and Pulgul Creeks, Pir’ri Pir’ri and Point Vernon shoreline are Council reserves with remnant natural vegetation. “Parraweena Park, cared for by a local community group,

combined with Gataker’s Bay is a very rewarding site registering up to 80 species per visit.” Over the 25 years, using birds as the example, John Knight has shown the importance of different sorts of vegetation. Some examples include tangled thorny shrubs to protect the small colourful wrens and mannikins; various grasses for seed eating finches; several meters of naturally growing vegetation around Harvey Bay’s lagoons for migrating Snipe from Japan and large stands of mature trees for Tawny Frogmouths. “The lesson from the 25 years is the need for mixed vegetation favouring birds and colourful beneficial insects; all of which make for a pleasanter and happier place for us all to live in.” “Birdwatchers of Hervey Bay will continue to thrive and enjoy the diverse birdlife in this region.” Mr Knight hoped everyone would treasure the benefits and pleasures of the natural environment for which Hervey Bay can be proud.

A COOL change has come to the Hervey Bay Croquet and Mallet Club thanks to funding from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program. The Hervey Bay Croquet and Mallet Club received $5,760 to install air-conditioning in the clubhouse. Hervey Bay Croquet and Mallet Club president Jenny Campbell said the upgrade had been welcomed by all users of the clubhouse. “Installation of the airconditioning had provided a more comfortable working environment for club

administration and tournament management and benefits the health and well-being of other groups using the clubhouse,” Ms Campbell said. “As a small community group, any grants we receive help offset the fundraising we do, which includes the hire of the clubhouse to community groups and organisations.” Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt visited the club recently to check out the upgraded facilities. “The clubhouse is used by club members, but also a group meet to play Mah-jong weekly, and the clubhouse is

hired out to other community groups,” said Mr Pitt. “More than 60 projects right across the Hinkler electorate have received funding through the popular Stronger Communities Programme. “Projects have included little libraries in Childers, marquees at Woodgate, a community run café in Hervey Bay and a wheelchair accessible bus in Bundaberg and much more.” The Hervey Bay Croquet and Mallet Sports Club was founded in 1960 and has been located at its current site on Totness Street, Scarness since 1983.

NEWSINBRIEF $15,000 up for grabs in Buy Smart competition

School students across Queensland again have the chance to show their smart shopping skills, and share in $15,000 in cash, with the launch of the Office of Fair Trading’s 2022 Buy Smart Competition. The Competition is divided into three categories – Years 4 to 6, Years 7 to 9 and Years 10 to 12. To enter, students choose a consumer issue that interests them, research it and then develop a creative project to share what they’ve learnt. Students can enter individually or as a team and have until the end of Term 3 (16 September 2022), to submit their entry. A total of over $15,000 in cash prizes is on offer. Flood disaster recovery

Fraser Coast Regional Council is turning its attention to helping the community recover from the recent flooding, over the next few weeks. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said people wanting to help with the flood recovery were encouraged to reach out directly to affected friends, families or businesses or

register as a volunteer with Volunteering Queensland www.emergencyvolunteering. com.au/qld “If you do help with the clean-up, please remember to stay safe and wear appropriate clothing and Personal Protective Equipment as there are many soil and water-borne bugs stirred up in floods that can infect people as they clean up,” he said. “Donations of quality goods for families in need are always well received at your local community run Op Shop while people wishing to donate funds or goods are encouraged to go to https:// www.givit.org.au/storms-andflooding.” Key activities in the recovery process include: • The Rural Fire Service and SES will assist with washouts of homes and businesses in the Maryborough urban area while areas outside of Maryborough needing a washout can call SES on 132 500. • Council will progressively reopen and clean up its facilities when possible. This includes libraries, cultural venues, parks and playgrounds and the Maryborough landfill. • Council will support flood affected residents and businesses throughout the Fraser Coast region with financial assistance applications when assistance becomes available from the

Australian and Queensland Governments. • Council will offer free kerbside collection of disaster waste from flood affected areas and will place bulk bins in the Maryborough CBD for businesses to dispose of flood waste. The free bulk kerbside collection of disaster waste is limited to floodaffected residential areas of Maryborough to assist making homes safe, habitable, and accessible. Cr Seymour said the current flood event had flushed more debris out of the Mary River, which will make its way on to Fraser Coast beaches for several weeks. “Council urges people to avoid beaches affected by flood debris due to potential hazards and pollutants. Residents can report flood debris to Council through our call centres,” he said.

Planting trees for the Queen’s Jubilee

Expressions of interest are now open for a grants program to honour the legacy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth. Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said, “The Queen has visited Australia 16 times and on many of these visits has planted trees at community events and

ceremonies – leaving a longlasting reminder of the special occasion for the people in those communities,” Mr Pitt said. “To celebrate The Queen’s 70 years’ service to Australia, my office is taking expressions of interest from eligible groups and organisations across the Hinkler electorate to hold community-based tree planting events. “Grants from $2,500 to $20,000 will be available with up to $100,000 in funding for up to 10 projects. “I encourage incorporated not-for-profit organisations, primary and high schools, P&C associations and religious organisations to think about how they can get involved.” Expressions of Interest must be received by 5pm on Friday, 18 March and can be emailed to: keith.pitt.mp@aph.gov.au

Regional people sought for Games Legacy group

The hunt is on for a dozen Queenslanders to plan how the state will benefit long after the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. “While other groups concentrate on the decade of preparation for the Games, the Legacy Committee will concentrate on the decades of celebration that follow,” said Premier and Minister for the Olympics Annastacia Palaszczuk. The committee will include 12 members including a chair

and deputy chair. Four members of the committee must live in regional Queensland. All Queenslanders over the age of 18 are encouraged to apply. A special Youth Adviser aged 16 will also be appointed.
