THE HERVEY Bay community is set to benefit from a new Fire and Rescue Station, with Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan announcing Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) was on the hunt for land to build the facility. While visiting the Fraser Coast last week, Mr Ryan said the station would set a foundation on which to bolster resources servicing the ever-expanding Hervey Bay community. “This region is booming and it’s important fire and emergency services resources match that growth,” he said. “The Government is committed to boosting resources where they are needed which is why QFES is now searching for a suitable site to purchase for a new Fire and Rescue Station in Hervey Bay.

“QFES advises that it is expecting to complete the land purchase this year and then start construction in the following year.” Hervey Bay MP, Adrian Tantari, said he had advocated strongly for new facilities for the region and the government was delivering. “I welcome the announcement to acquire a suitable site for this new emergency service facility. “This is all about investing in local communities to provide the frontline services we need to support community safety." QFES Commissioner Greg Leach who joined Minister Ryan in Hervey Bay, said it was important to acknowledge the need to bolster resources and infrastructure in locations that can be exposed to natural disasters. “Only last month we witnessed the devastation of

severe flooding across the Wide Bay region. “Enhanced capabilities in areas like Hervey Bay enable QFES to evolve and ensure our emergency response capability continues to protect all communities. “QFES is looking for the perfect location for the new Hervey Bay Fire and Rescue Station to enhance our operational response, with construction expected to commence in 2023.” Secretary of the United Firefighters Union Queensland John Oliver said ensuring professional firefighters have modern facilities is critical and something the UFU has advocated for. “This is great news for professional firefighters in Hervey Bay and the North Coast Region,” Mr Oliver said.

Ocean Guardians on a mission CATERING to keep our beaches clean MEALS ON WHEELS

www.mowfc.org.au

A LOCAL group dedicated to actively assisting the ocean held their first beach clean-up with a difference and it was a huge success. Recently formed Ocean Guardians Hervey Bay have a mission to look after the ocean while being citizen scientists and having fun at the same time. Around 60 people gathered at the beach clean-up, held on Sunday 23 January from Shelley Beach, much to the amazement of organisers Sara Ashdown and Diane Lambropoulos. “We were overwhelmed with the number of people that turned up; giving up their time on a Sunday,” said Ms Ashdown. The group collected over a cubic metre of rubbish in a skip bin, found along the beach within a two-hour period stretching from the marina to the mangroves at Point Vernon. “We thought the debris might have been mostly from the recent floods, but we were surprised that we collected so many plastic water bottles, cigarette butts and disposable face masks.” The pair plan to raise money to give out free mini ashtrays for people to collect their cigarette butts. “Cigarette butts don’t break down and contain many toxic chemicals in them. Face masks are also a problem as small marine animals eat them or get tangled in them.” “Masks are like the new straws.” Ms Ashdown said they tried to get into areas that Council couldn’t easily reach such as

around Tuan Creek in Pialba. “We are really impressed with how much work the Council have put in to clean up the beaches, they have done so much.” A Council spokesperson said, “Council has been targeting the worst affected Fraser Coast beaches following the flooding event. “Assessment of our beaches for any required beach cleaning is continuing. Any necessary works attributed to the flood event and/or the upcoming high tides will be scheduled as resources become available and tide levels are suitable.” Council advises the public to exercise caution along the foreshore and in the water due to potential pollutants and debris. Ocean Guardians collated data on the debris they found as part of a citizen scientist program for Tongoroa Blue to use for scientific research through universities. In addition to the beach clean-up efforts the group were mindful of helping homeless people. Participants brought donations of food and groceries that were given to the Hervey Bay Community Centre to distribute to homeless people. Ms Lambropoulos said they were very thankful for donations from Bin Hire Hervey Bay, Fraser Coast Fresh Produce and Rural Supplies for providing rubbish bags. “We have such an amazing and supportive community.” “Apart from the beach cleanup, we did other activities too;

For the past 12 years we have offered an annual vision screening program to most schools in Hervey Bay. All grade 1 & grade 4 students are offered FREE screening by Richard Watt Optometrist. About 1,000 students per year take part in the program and all recieve a report. Those who fail the test recieve a recommendation for a full eye examination by a behavioral or developmental optometrist who is active in that industry and interested in children’s vision. Stadium for thousands

A MULTI-PURPOSE indoor centre and a premier field surrounded by a stadium and earth banks that could seat thousands of spectators are among the features proposed in the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct Draft Master Plan 2022. Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said residents were encouraged to view the draft plan and have their say. “The draft master plan is the strategic vision for the future staged development of the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct, identifying what the site should look like and how it should function,” Cr Everard said. “The draft plan considers community needs and aspirations, existing and potential future users as well as emerging trends in sport and recreation. “The timing for how the precinct will develop will depend on available funding, demand and potential community and commercial partnerships.”

The draft Master Plan can be downloaded or viewed online on the Council’s Engagement Hub webpage - www. frasercoast.engagementhub. com.au/sport-precinct-masterplan “We encourage local residents to have their say via an online survey on Council’s Engagement Hub, which is open now until Monday 21 February 2022,” Cr Everard said. The 60-hectare Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct is on the corner of Woods Road and Chapel Road, Nikenbah. Stage one of the precinct opened in February 2019 with facilities for netball, soccer and Oztag. Since the opening, Fraser Coast Cycling has also been based at the precinct and Council has had discussions with the Hervey Bay Basketball Association to relocate to the precinct. The precinct has been designed so the facilities complement each other and

activate all areas of the site, supported by a state-of-the-art premier hub. The Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct Draft Master Plan 2022 proposes that a premier field be a key focal point of the precinct, providing a first-rate facility capable of hosting high-level sporting and community events. It could include permanently fixed seating for 3,500 spectators and grass spectator embankments surrounding the field, creating an amphitheatre effect and the ability to accommodate thousands more spectators. Adjacent to the premier field would be a multi-purpose indoor centre that will cater for a variety of sport, recreation, and health and wellbeing activities, while it’s also proposed that the Hervey Bay pump track be located at the precinct. “It’s an investment for now and it’s an investment for the future of Fraser Coast sport, leisure and entertainment.”

Making a splash to help sick kids

STARLIGHT Children’s Foundation is holding its fourth annual Super Swim Challenge through February with Hervey Bay locals hoping to make an impact with swim laps. The swim challenge aims to raise $3 million to help deliver happiness to more than 76,000 sick kids. By completing a swim at a location of their choice – backyard pool, aquatic centre, or even a beach or lake, participants will raise funds to support Starlight’s vital in-hospital services including Captain Starlight and Starlight Express Rooms nationally. Point Vernon resident Malcolm Quinn is set to swim 15 kilometres as part of the fundraiser through February. Mr Quinn was inspired to support the Starlight Foundation as it is close to his heart, “When I was a child I was very sick with asthma and spent a lot of time in hospital.” “It was a very isolating time as a child, being in hospital by yourself; back in those days mum couldn’t stay overnight and I was there for weeks with strictly enforced visitor times.” “So, I understand how stressful it is when kids are in hospital, not just for the parents but for the kids too.” “The Starlight Foundation do some great work and I love the idea of supporting them,” said Mr Quinn. “We've all recently experienced periods of uncertainty and social isolation, and children and families who manage serious illness face this every day.” He said when he saw the swim challenge he immediately joined as it aligned his love of swimming with helping sick

kids who may be in the hospital with asthma. “When I came out of hospital my mum got me into swimming to help with my asthma. I loved it and I swam competitively for a long time, maybe 10 to 12 years.” “I like swimming, it’s not hard work for me to do it.” Mr Quinn was very humbled by the support he had already received for the cause. His initial target of raising $1000 was surpassed within the first few days when he received a pledge for $750 from Bob Wicks, owner of Bob’s Tyres. Mr Wicks is well known for his generous donations to community fundraisers and said he was always happy to donate to a good cause, “I like to help with anything that makes our community a better place to live.” “If it makes sick kids feel better then that is a good thing.” “If the whole town got involved and did a little bit, we would have a much better

town,” said Mr Wicks. “We like to support everything that is good for the town and Malcolm is a good supporter so we’d like to help give it back.” Every minute of every day a child is admitted to hospital in Australia. What comes next for thousands of children is a lifechanging diagnosis - many facing months on end of treatment and hospital stays. Starlight CEO Louise Baxter said, "Starlight has been there for sick kids throughout the challenges of the past two years. Only with the help of the community can we continue to be there for sick kids when they need it most. "With your support, we can ensure every seriously ill child has access to the happiness that is so essential to their health and wellbeing. Why? Because happiness matters," she added. Celebrating 77 years of endless love

ALAN and Joan Williams met and married during World War II and their love for each other is as strong as ever. They recently celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary and reflected on the amazing life journey they have had together and the secret to their longlasting love. Alan, 98 said the secret to a long and happy marriage was tolerance and honesty from both sides. “We never kept secrets from each other. We all make mistakes, but we always discussed our problems and worked through them.” “We’ve had a great life together.” Their love story began just before Alan went overseas to fight in the war, “I was going to

New Guinea and I asked Joan to marry me.” “My argument was that if we didn’t get married, we probably wouldn’t see each other again as I was from Grafton in New South Wales and she lived in Perth.” He told the Advertiser some of the achievements they were proud of included opening a community theatre and being recognised for ongoing charity work. “In 1985 we raised $150,000 and the government matched it with a grant to build our own theatre in Ballina,” said Alan. “It was a lovely theatre, which I think is probably the best run in New South Wales for an amateur group.” For around 40 years the couple were involved in the

How Valentine’s Day is evolving THE LONG-standing occasion to celebrate love has endured for hundreds of years but in recent times Valentine’s Day has evolved and new trends are emerging for couples to show their love to each other. Popular Valentine gifts can include cards, flowers, chocolates, jewellery, lingerie, gift boxes and experiential gifts. The Advertiser spoke to a couple of businesses to see if they noted any changes to the traditions over the past couple of Leeanne Jasse with the years. Bloomers Florist and Gifts team Leeanne Jasse, owner of Bloomers Florist and sunflower popularity, “In my first year, Gifts in Pialba said she had noticed a few I ordered about ten bunches of fresh changes since the pandemic that may sunflowers, now I order about 90 bunches continue, “We’ve noticed a change in fewer of them.” people buying red roses; they have become The bright flowers can be grown all year very expensive.” round in Australia, making them a popular She explained that red roses, while choice any time. traditionally associated with love and Other flowers that are proving to be popular for Valentine’s Day have been popular are lilies and gerberas as they are slowly replaced by bright colourful long lasting said Ms Jasse. sunflowers. Warren. February 15 is unofficially known as ‘Single Awareness Day’. It is a day for single people to celebrate other forms of love for example the love between friends and family as well as loving yourself. Valentine’s Day may be celebrated globally with similar traditions, but some countries have their own unique traditions. For example, in Japan, it is traditional for women to give gifts to men. Men will then give gifts to women on 14 March, which is known as White Day (and yes, the gifts need to be white in colour). There’s a quirky tradition in Denmark where single people send anonymous letters to their crushes, usually on paper snowflakes. If the recipient guesses the sender correctly, the sender has to give them an Easter egg! This strange tradition has been practised since the 18th century. Neither a recession or global pandemic can dampen Valentine's Day, with most Aussie couples still planning to spend the same amount as last year. According to ME Bank's 'Love and Money' survey, 67% of Australians in relationships will be spending the same as last year's celebrations despite COVID-19. Across the generations, Gen X (19651980) are planning to splurge the most with an average spend of $208, compared with Baby Boomers (1946-1964) who intend to spend the least ($92). Millennials planned to spend $142 on average while Gen Z will spend $108 on their partner.

MORE kids in Hervey Bay will have the opportunity to participate in a sport or join a club thanks to the FairPlay vouchers program. FairPlay vouchers deliver $150 to help eligible families with the cost of sporting club membership, team registration, or on-field participation fees. In Hervey Bay, there are around 49 clubs that accept the vouchers, including a wide variety of sports and outdoor recreation clubs such as beach volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis, Scouts and Girl Guides. Hervey Bay Girl Guides District Manager Sharon Hay said the FairPlay vouchers were a great way for many girls to enjoy the fun of being a Guide, whilst developing a wide range of life skills that the Guides program offers. “The $150 vouchers can be used towards their annual membership fees.”

“Girls learn so many life skills with Guides such as camping, archery, canoeing, abseiling, cooking, crafts, you name it,” said Ms Hay. From the age of five girls of all abilities can enter the Girl Guides and move up their skill level to leadership roles said, Ms Hay. “We’ve got vacancies in all age groups and are always looking for new leaders to join us.” Member for Hervey Bay, Adrian Tantari MP said, “FairPlay gives young people opportunities for physical exercise and social interactions they otherwise may not have.” “These vouchers also help Hervey Bay sporting clubs kick off the year in the best possible way, bringing in new members to strengthen their teams and programs.” “With Brisbane 2032 now on the horizon, FairPlay takes on extra significance as it will

increase participation levels and help us uncover our future champions.” Local mum Alicia Wade said, “As a single parent, these vouchers assist me to give my child a fair go in accessing sport and recreational activities across the region.” Since mid-2019, more than 102,000 vouchers worth $15 million have helped eligible young Queenslanders get active with their favourite club. Applications are open until 23 March. Parents, carers or guardians with a valid Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card can apply for a voucher for their children from 5 to 17 years-of-age. For families without a government concession card, FairPlay applications can be made through a referral agency. For more information www. qld.gov.au/fairplayvouchers

Hervey Bay Regional Gallery FRASER Coast residents could soon be enjoying a cuppa or cake at a café after visiting an art exhibition at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and a restaurant meal before a show at the Brolga Theatre. Council are calling for tenders to run a café and catering service at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, and a restaurant and catering service at the Brolga Theatre and Convention Centre. “The Fraser Coast is blessed with a range of amazing cultural venues, with the Brolga Theatre and Convention Centre holding on average 270 events and 58 performances attended by more than 50,000 people a year,” Cr Phil Truscott said. “While the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery is currently closed, a major $2.7 million

refurbishment is well underway ahead of a reopening in April this year.” “The gallery refurbishment will allow the Fraser Coast to host more national and significant art exhibitions, while also providing space for a counter-style café, a small kitchen and seating for up to 30 customers on an outdoor dining deck.” Cr Truscott said the Brolga Theatre previously had a restaurant and in-house catering service and Council was keen to bring the service back to support the primary operations of the venue. “The Brolga’s spectacular riverside views and choice of flexible spaces make it one of the most desirable venues on the Fraser Coast and as such, hosts many prestigious local, national, and international

events and performances,” he said. “The venue features a restaurant space with separate entry, adjoining a fully equipped commercial kitchen and seating for up to 80 diners. “Council is looking for innovative proposals for restaurant and catering services that are willing to tailor their business model to support this unique partnership opportunity. “Tenderers may wish to submit proposals for either or both of these leasing and catering opportunities, with Council offering three-year contracts with options for extensions.” Tenders are through QTenders at https://bit. ly/3fHl3EG and close 17 February.

USC is celebrating the imminent return of international students to its campuses across South East Queensland and the Wide Bay Burnett region. The university welcomed fully vaccinated international students from 22 January after the Government made the announcement students will be able to travel to Queensland without needing to quarantine upon arrival. A spokesperson from USC said the Fraser Coast campus had ten international students enrolled to start studying this semester. “Most are studying Nursing Science, while others are enrolled in Social Work and Animal Ecology.” “Nine of the students were previously studying here and are continuing their studies and we have one new student

from Nigeria.” More international students are expected for Semester 2. USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Bartlett said the timing of this announcement was ideal, with the official start of Semester 1 on 28 February. “It is so exciting that Queensland is re-opening to international students, and we are really looking forward to welcoming them back into our communities,” Professor Bartlett said. “We have certainly missed them and the richness and vibrancy that they add to our campuses and regions. “As well as allowing our existing students who have been waiting in their home countries to return to USC, today’s announcement means new international students can apply now to start studying

here in Semester 1.” Professor Bartlett said the appeal of studying in Australia had been boosted recently by the Federal Government’s moves to provide rebates on some visa fees for international students and to increase the number of hours they can work in some industries, such as aged care, tourism and hospitality. She said USC was ready to provide extra support for international students during the application and enrolment process, and to help them settle into their local communities and the semester ahead. “Whether this will be their first time travelling to Australia or they are returning after a long absence, the USC community is looking forward to making them feel welcome,” she said.

FROM Hervey Bay Special School hopeful to manager and founder of Hervey Bay’s first all-abilities futsal team, Jimmy Hamilton has a vision for inclusion and the motivation to bring players together. The new all-abilities futsal team started last year, providing local disabled players with the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of competitive sport playing with people of all ages and abilities and are getting ready for another supercharged year. Mr Hamilton is very proud of his progression to team founder and manager. His involvement with futsal started with providing first aid and filling up water bottles for the Jets team, to becoming manager of his very own all-abilities futsal team and he hasn’t looked back. He was a regular substitute for some existing established mixed teams, before recruiting his friends to create Hervey Bay’s first ever all-abilities Futsal team. In just one week, he created a seven player team, completed registration and has since played in a competitive winter season and currently in a summer fixture against an able-bodied mixed team. Fraser Coast’s Citizen of the Year is truly a story of collective success “Our son Chris is now the Group General Manager of THE FRAMED Fraser Coast Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award winner’s certificate and accompanying trophy that now sits Operations for us, our daughter Rachael works here in in Bob Wicks’ office, is where the singularity of the recognition administration and our eldest daughter Aimee is a highly starts and stops. respected Nurse Educator at the P.A Hospital in Brisbane.” To know the Wicks family well is to understand that this is two“We always knew that advertising your business in the act affair. media was vitally important, but channelling money into local Bob and Narelle Wicks have been partners in life for the last 34 years and at the leading edge of community support in the region for well over three decades. It many ways it feels like the recent Australia Day Award recognition is simply validation of something already universally accepted. When Bob found his way here in 1987 after stints in Central QLD and the Gold Coast, Hervey Bay was a vastly different place to what you see today. They arrived to run a tyre store on Boat Harbour Drive, not as owners, but as managing employees with the opportunity to have first-right to buy the business within three years, so long as hard work equalled success. An appetite for hard work was not in short supply, when it came to the Wicks’. “The store was originally a Tyrepower outlet when it first opened in November of 1988 and we quickly became one of the largest sellers of Bridgestone tyres in the country. Back in those days, we were just one of twenty Bridgestone outlets in Australia, unlike the three-hundred that exist now,” Bob said. “I remember going to the Chamber of Commerce here, not long after we arrived. The President of the time came over to me and said, you’re the new tyre guy aren’t you. You’re going to go broke. Where you have set up, on the other side of Boat Harbour Drive, is too far out of town. Nobody ever goes up that far.” History shows that decision was a master-stroke as one of the highest profile locations in the region with thousands of cars going past daily, even if it was the first business to ever open on the south side of Boat Harbour Drive. The early days were hard work and long hours, all while trying to raise a young family ‘in the downstairs office’ as they say. The four staff they had on board, which included Bob and Narelle, is a far cry from the more than forty staff they employ today. Narelle and Bob Wicks thrive on supporting the local community Turning over $60,000 a month in the beginning was considered a huge achievement. Today the business is one of the most successful on the Fraser Coast injecting millions of dollars into the local economy each year. “All of our kids grew up around the business and grew up here in Hervey Bay. We wanted them to be able to stay here and have not only a great education but find work and career paths. Our philosophy of supporting community and sporting organisations has always been about helping to grow the town. To make the future brighter for families, so Hervey Bay grows as a natural consequence,” Narelle said.

sponsorships has wider implications and benefits. It helps the organisations directly involved and we have found the Fraser Coast to certainly be a place where you get supported in return. There is a lot of loyalty here.” It is difficult to go to a local event on the Fraser Coast without seeing the name ‘Bob’s’ as a major contributor. It is that incredible level of community engagement, not just from a financial assistance level but from an organisational, support and a sometimes call-to-arms mentality that the Wicks family is most

known for. From Bowls Days to Golf Days, The Dunga Derby, Fishing Clubs, Rural Fire, Softball, Surf Life Saving, Convoy for Kids, Seagulls, Bombers, The Mud Trials and literally too many more to list, the flow on effect of their generosity would be measured in the millions. The iconic Fraser Island Ice Boxes, introduced by Bob and Narelle in 2004, have forged an identity of their own as a popular fundraising item across the Fraser Coast. As a unique and important raffle prize or auction item, they are instantly recognisable. “I have no idea how many boxes we have given away over the last seventeen years. It would be in the thousands. They are an integral part of our community engagement and allow us to provide a distinguishable item that really works as a fundraiser for the groups we support,” Bob said. Bob was also instrumental in the establishment of Fraser Coast Mates, banding together a group of local community members concerned by the rise of debilitating mental health issues and suicide rates, especially in men, across the Fraser Coast region. Their aim is to build awareness about men’s mental health issues, bridge the gap between support services and give mates the tools to help their friends and colleagues when they may be struggling. “When you own a business in the town and you do well, you have a responsibility to give back. It’s pretty simple. Our son Chris raised close to $48,000 for Variety Club earlier this year through a Bowls Day and is now on the board of Rally for a Cause, the operators of the Dunga Derby. It won’t be stopping with us. Our kids know how important these values are,” Bob said. Above their desire to achieve positive social, cultural, and community change, the Wicks family has a staunch buylocal policy. “It’s not a difficult concept. If you rely on the Fraser Coast to support your business, then you have to support them. We will only buy or source everything we need for our business through other local businesses. We only ever step outside that, if it can’t possibly be done here.” It is fair to say that Bob and Narelle Wicks are not working quite as hard these days. Reaping the benefits of entrusting the future to their family and their incredible work force, they have earned the right to smell the roses and spend time with their grandkids. That’s not to say you won’t find them at the store most days. When the question of legacy inevitably reared at the end of this conversation, we simply asked how they would like to be thought of or remembered, when it’s time to slip into quiet retirement. The answer was simple. “That we did the best we possibly could have done for the region.”

Thank you Fraser Coast for your support It has been our privilege servicng the region for the last thrity-three years. We look forward to continuing to help our local community thrive into the future.

AFTER experiencing his own mental health struggles, Hervey Bay’s Ben Doust is helping others turn their lives around, trading a career as a carpenter for a more rewarding role supporting people at their most vulnerable. The decision to trade a 15-year-long career in construction for one building safe spaces for people at their most vulnerable was extremely personal for Ben. Having been diagnosed with depression at 18 and bipolar at 21, Ben is no stranger to the challenges mental illnesses pose to those who live with them. After cultivating a successful career as a carpenter and becoming a father, Ben thought he had overcome the worst of his struggles and that he was managing his mental illness just fine by himself. In 2019, after ignoring his declining mental health for two years, Ben was admitted to a mental health unit in Maryborough. He had split up with his partner after 12 months travelling together with their son, and the stress was too much to bear. “I was going through a few things and was in a new environment where I didn’t know anyone either socially or in my industry, and it just became too much,” Ben said. The two weeks he spent in the unit proved to be a turning point – for both his mental health and his career. “It wasn’t until I was in the mental health unit that I

realised I had to do something. I didn’t want to end up back in there again,” Ben said. He met a peer worker with shared experiences and developed an interest in the role. Ben enrolled in a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (Consumer Peer Work) at TAFE Queensland and said that in learning how to help others with their mental health, he learned to embrace his own. Ben completed his certificate and is now working through the NDIS as a mental health support worker. It’s a role he is clearly passionate about, describing it as “absolutely magic”. “I love going to work because I’m helping people regain their independence. To me it feels like I’m living the dream, because I can make a difference to somebody’s life.” In the wake of the global pandemic, the demand for skilled support workers is on the rise, with crisis and support services reporting a sharp increase in calls, and the Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment projecting a 15.4 per cent increase nationwide in employment opportunities in the social assistance services

TAFE Queensland is helping to produce a pipeline of skilled workers to fulfil this demand, with their East Coast region alone reporting a 20 per cent increase in Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work enrolments and an incredible 132 per cent increase in Diploma of Mental Health enrolments during the 2020/21 financial year. “Twelve months in the mental health peer work course has brought me that much further forward, and I would recommend it to anybody, whether you have a lived experience yourself or you’re a supporter of someone with lived experience.”

It’s comedy but not as we know it THOSE wacky Z-PAC creatives who brought the hilarious FLUMMOXED stage show to life last year have all bought tickets on the crazy train (or spaceship) and are heading into space for their latest show, ROUGH: From Zero to Go. Prolific local director and actor Jonathan Dunn and his dynamite team of actors have crafted three ‘out there’ and riotous short plays, which all happen on a strange, 1930’s style spaceship (or is it an ocean liner?) The uproarious new show is set to be the first theatrical rocket to launch Z-PAC Theatre’s 2022 season of shows. With a cast of peculiar characters, including three of the characters from FLUMMOXED and a connection to the 1960’s THUNDERBIRDS, this show promises to deliver non-stop laughs using physical comedy, music and improvisation. To (mis) quote Doctor McCoy from the original Star Trek: “It’s comedy Jim, just not as we know it!” “Our bizarre collection of stories ranges from the hilarious adventures of a murderous barber and a gumshoe detective on his heels to the trials and tribulations of Lady P, a washed-up ex-international spy (now a lounge singer on the ship),” explained director Jonathan Dunn.

“Oh and did I mention she thinks she is a puppet? So, clearly, the situations themselves allow for some super funny moments.” As a bonus, one of the stories is a ‘sequel-story’ for some of the characters from last year’s equally bizarre and hilarious offering, Flummoxed; Lucille, Annette, and Dunkley all return for some ‘rough’ weather as stowaways aboard the ship. “One of the most remarkable features of this production is the fact that the actors and myself are inventing it as we

go!” The production features an extended ensemble cast who all contribute to the play-building process. No stranger to improvised dramas, Mr Dunn has a long history of directing shows for Z-PAC Theatre over the past 20 plus years. “I’m really keen for everyone to experience the arts so I try to be as inclusive as I can be with the casting” explained Mr Dunn. “Everyone who auditioned was included in the cast and from this pool of enthusiasts, I cast the main roles. “But everyone contributes ideas and has lots to do throughout the show, playing multiple minor characters and in filling the ship.” “I’m so thrilled to have such

a great cast of collaborators. It’s enormous fun”. “Add to this lineup the amazing costuming talents of Dawn Warrington and Helen Jennings who created the costumes and wigs for Flummoxed, and you have a dream team of creatives.” Mr Dunn said the show is recommended for mature audience aged 15 plus as it contains adult themes. “Anyone who enjoys quirky physical comedy is going to love this show,” said Mr Dunn. ROUGH: From Zero to Go runs from 4 – 20 March at Z-PAC Theatre, 15 Zephyr St, Scarness. Ticket prices are between $15 and $25 for Early Bird pricing or between $16.50 and $27.50 after 11 February. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour at the Orchid House in the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens THE ORCHID House at the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens is proving a popular attraction for local residents and tourists with more than 15,000 people visiting in 2021. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the Orchid House was doubled in size in 2019 with the support of a grant through the State Government’s Works for Queensland program. “It is great to see so many people taking the opportunity to visit to see rare orchids in flower,” he said. “The Fraser Coast has the largest publicly owned orchid collection in Australia, with the major expansion allowing us to showcase even more of our 5500 orchids to the community. “In mid-2021, Council did some further minor renovations to make the facility

even more attractive and ensure the space is used as effectively as possible. “This included upgrading the garden beds, increasing hanging space through mesh roofing for particular orchid types, upgrading the maintenance area and adding new outdoor furniture. “It’s interesting to see that the peak month in 2021 was September when almost 2500 people visited, shortly after these renovations were completed. It is also pleasing that the visitor numbers are on the rise, increasing from 13,036 in 2020 to 15,306 in 2021.” Cr Seymour said the Orchid House was one of a range of fantastic facilities in the beautiful Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens, which were situated on 6000 year old dunes spanning 26 hectares.

“The gardens boast a wide variety of established plants of the Wide Bay and Great Sandy region along with walking tracks, an Australian bush tucker garden, a Chinese garden, labyrinth, the Orchid House and a natural playground,” he said. “The Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens are just one of many amazing outdoor spaces on the Fraser Coast, which I encourage locals and visitors to get out and enjoy to stay healthy and active in our community.” The Orchid House is open Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 2.30pm and entry is free. Pavement replacement

A $500,000 project is underway to replace the pavement in St Andrews Drive, Namwen Court and Palm Meadows Place in Hervey Bay. “As part of the Council’s regular inspection program it was identified that the pavement in these streets has reached the end of its working life,” Councillor David Lewis said. “The roads are being

reprofiled, the existing pavement is ground off, and replaced with new asphalt overlay. “It is anticipated that the works will finish by the end of next week, weather permitting.” Council urges motorists to avoid the streets if possible while the works are underway. “While the contractor will endeavour to maintain access to properties while the work is completed, there may be short periods where access will be temporarily restricted.

Great Sand Straits Paddle for LifeFlight

Local LifeFlight advocates and Crazy Kayakers, Mike Grounds and Dan Turner successfully completed their inaugural Great Sandy Straits Paddle on Monday 24 January. The fundraising event for the vital rapid response airlift service provided by RACQ LifeFlight was planned for the first week of January but was postponed due to the weather. The pair paddled 76.16 kilometres from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay with a paddle time of 12 hours and 36 minutes. Starting the day at 3.45am from Tin Can Bay, Mr Grounds said they were very fortunate to have excellent weather conditions. Winds

were mainly a gentle south easterly with no more than 12 knots. “We are now hoping that we can modify this to a yearly event, similar to the Bay to Bay Yacht race; a two day paddle/camping event,” said Mr Grounds. Mr Grounds and Mr Turner were thankful they have never needed the rescue services of LifeFlight over their many years of paddling but wanted to raise awareness of the service and give back to the community to see the service continue. “They not only save lives across Queensland every week, but also rely on private and community support to continue offering this service,” said Mr Grounds. From car accidents to heart attacks to premature births, RACQ LifeFlight Rescue exists to save lives and serve the community by providing rapid response aeromedical care - at no direct cost to the patient. Fraser Coast is the highest user of LifeFlight’s service in Queensland; it carried out 271 missions in 2020 at $25,000 per mission, totalling $6.775Million. Lifejacket safety

An alarming number of Queensland boaties continue to ignore lifejacket rules according to new data from Maritime Safety Queensland. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said a recent blitz on lifejacket compliance found one in five vessel operators doing the wrong thing. “Lifejackets are the seatbelts of the sea and if they’re not on, they can’t save you.”

Back to School with dignity MORE than 50 children who have escaped domestic violence on the Fraser Coast were able to start the new school year with dignity this year thanks to generous community donations of backpacks filled with new school supplies. Selina Meurant was inspired to get involved with Friends with Dignity’s annual Back to School Drive as a way of giving back to the community that helped her escape her own domestic violence situation with her young daughter a couple of years ago. “My daughter is four now and this year she understands more. I told her that we are going to make up backpacks for kids whose families can’t afford them and she was excited to help the kids too,” said Ms Meurant.

After seeing her daughter’s enthusiasm, she decided to invite the community to help her through her Fraser Coast Cleaning Services Facebook page and was overwhelmed with the response. “I honestly thought we may be lucky to receive about ten bags and that would be amazing but we ended up getting 50 bags together.” She gathered the bags through her business and arranged for Uniting Care in Hervey Bay and Maryborough to become local contacts for the Friends With Dignity program to ensure the bags were distributed to local families in need.
