FOOTBALL fever hit the Bay with the Brisbane Roar football team staying in the last week of August. Along with coaches and manager, the team stayed at the Bay Apartments in Torquay and enjoyed all the Bay had to offer in their actionpacked schedule. They were involved with several community engagements and a game against a Wide Bay Select team. Roar player Josh BrindellSouth said in their free time, the team had been over at the beach, had a gym session, explored Main Street, been to several cafes and played golf. “The highlight for me has been the people; everyone has been very welcoming, so it’s been great getting out and meeting people.” This visit was the first time for the former real estate agent to visit Hervey Bay. Brindell-South joined the A League team two years ago and recently signed a multiyear extension contract with Brisbane Roar. When asked how he prepares for a game, he said he always eats salmon, sweet potato and broccolini beforehand,

I have done my ritual with food to prepare for games.” The team also listens to a playlist by resident DJ, player Corey Brown before games, said Brindell-South. The 28-year-old said he has been with his long term partner for about six years and said the important things to him in life are “Family A League football team Brisbane Roar and friends and “They’re my go-to, either the trying to be day before or on game day; an all-around good human I’m very rigid and do the same being.” thing every game day with all While Roar was staying at the my meals and drinks. Z-PAC THEATRE is abuzz for its latest show, the iconic ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’, starting 17 September. The stage production is a funny yet disturbing roller coaster struggle for status between the confident, macho McMurphy (played by Tim Holstein) and the orderly and manipulative Nurse Ratched (played by Theresa Saunders). Set in a mental institution, it delves into the patient’s world, shocking and delighting in the most unexpected ways, revealing a world of emotional button-pushing, chaos and rebellion. Based on the novel by Ken Kesey, it is a tale that takes many turns, often funny, sometimes tragic, but ultimately a triumph of the human spirit. The story centres around prison inmate Randall McMurphy who is transferred to a mental institution for ‘psychopathic evaluation’. He thinks it will be a breeze, or it'll be much less restrictive, but he's up against Nurse Ratched, who runs the mental asylum with an iron fist under a sweet and poised veneer. Director Judith La Forest said, “She is the epitome of evil, feeding on the pain of the other patients, and she weakens them with a psychologically manipulative program designed to destroy their self-esteem.”

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour was tied up with the cast at rehearsals “Her nickname is Big Nurse, similar to George Orwell's 1984 Big Brother; an oppressive and all-knowing authority.” “McMurphy is the one that represents freedom and selfdetermination, and so they clash,” Ms La Forest added. “I'm hoping that when people see the show, they'll be inspired by this free spirit of an anti hero,” said the long term theatre veteran, Ms La Forest. Ms La Forest said she chose the play as, “It’s one of those plays that’s got such a fantastic mix of characters; it’s got everything – action, desperation, tragedy, hope but also lots of laugh out loud moments where the antics of these characters takes in people.” Running over weekends from 17 September to 9 October, the naturalistic style show features a large cast of some of Hervey

Bay’s best known actors. Ms La Forest said the show would appeal to anyone who loves good theatre and are intrigued to compare it to the 1975 iconic movie featuring Jack Nicholson as McMurphy and Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched. Another reference to draw comparisons with was the 2020 Netflix show, Ratched, which featured the battle-axe nurse character before she hit Cuckoo’s Nest, in an origin story. Ms La Forest said the show is relevant to our society's social issues of mental illness, drugs, and other social problems and hope it raises awareness and stimulates discussion. “I hope when people see the show, they will come away knowing they've seen quality and thought-provoking theatre.”

Ms La Forest has been involved with the theatre for over 50 years, with dozens of shows under her directorial belt since moving to Hervey Bay about 15 years ago. “To me, the theatre is the heart and soul of any community. We all get together in the dark, and we enjoy something that's magic, and we can talk about it. We can live the experiences; it is uplifting.” “Theatre it is a panacea of all ills.” One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest runs from 17 September to 9 October at Z-PAC Theatre, 15 Zephyr St, Scarness. Ticket prices are $27.50 for adults, $22 concession and $16.50 for students. Book tickets online at www. bit.ly/ZPACCuckoos

Social worker helps youth GRILL

Enjoy t he best view in t he Bay!

HBNC CEO Tanya Stephenson, Brock Wilson and social worker Alectra Hancox AT-RISK youth in Hervey Bay stand to benefit from a new partnership between youth intervention charity Youth Insearch and youth homeless service Reconnect. The partnership will enable Youth Insearch to place social worker Alectra Hancox in the area to support young people in the Hervey Bay region. Ms Hancox said her focus would be on supporting and working with local young people experiencing adversity in their lives. “My experience in working with diverse young people and their families in remote and regional areas of Australia has given me a strong understanding that all people need connection to positive role models. It is so important to instil hope and use strengths-based practices, to increase resilience when young people experience adversity,” Ms Hancox said. Ms Hancox has extensive experience working in the social services sector, with her most recent role as Project Officer with Primary Health Network (MHAODS). She has also worked as the Queensland Health Child Safety Officer in Far North Queensland and Torres Strait Islands, in Child and Family Services within Neighbourhood

Centres, as a Family/Youth Case Worker with Child Safety on Norfolk Island, and with NDIS as both a Psychosocial Transition Officer for mental health participants and as a Behaviour Support Practitioner. Youth Insearch CEO Stephen Lewin said the placement of a new social worker within the community would help young people who were struggling and ensure they received tailored care. “We want to point the young people of Hervey Bay in the right direction, helping them identify what support services are available and how the Youth Insearch program can assist them in overcoming their challenges,” Mr Lewin said. Hervey Bay is the latest area to benefit from Youth Insearch's Place-Based Model, which is already embedded in the Dalby, Chinchilla, Tara and Bundaberg communities. Youth Insearch has found that when social workers assist young people in a single community, they can provide tailored support to each young person on a one-on-one basis and connect them with appropriate support services. Youth Insearch Regional Coordinator for Wide Bay Burnett Donna Ryan said she was thrilled to welcome Alectra

Hancox to the Youth Insearch team. “It is great to have Alectra on board in Hervey Bay in response to the strong need for a social worker in the community. Due to the recent increase in requests for support from young people, Alectra’s assistance will help us work more closely with case coordination.” The Youth Insearch community-based partnership with Reconnect launched on Wednesday 1 September at The Neighbourhood Hive in Pialba. Supporters of the social worker partnerships include Hand Heart Pocket, The Charity of Freemasons Queensland, the Tenix Foundation and the Tim Fairfax Foundation, who will be funding Youth Insearch in its transition to the social worker model and seven new social worker positions in Queensland over the next three years. Anyone wanting more information on the Youth Insearch and Reconnect peerto-peer program can pop into the Reconnect Youth Centre located in the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, 80 Main Street Pialba.

‘Neon Euphoria’ photos by Urangan High Year 12 student Poppy Block URANGAN State High School delighted both the school and the wider community with an imaginative and immersive art festival event on the last Friday evening in August. The school’s Creative Futures faculty and Arts students presented the ‘Neon Euphoria’ Festival in the Arts precinct on the school grounds, promoting creative problem solving, the importance of finding happiness and excitement in our lives through the arts, and a commitment to ‘working together to learn’. Creative Futures faculty Head of Department, Liza Young, explained that the project was part of a long

history of producing original Arts events at Urangan High. “In all my years working in the Arts at Urangan High, we’ve never chosen to take a predictable path when it comes to musicals and events. Neon is another example of setting students and staff a creative problem to solve and then working collaboratively to make decisions, overcome hurdles, and ultimately celebrate the process as much as the product.” Neon Euphoria included live student performances on the Truck Stop Stage and at Busker’s Corner, music experiences including a ‘Lights Out’ performance which placed the audience in the dark

and an interactive space constructed from cardboard designed for the younger family members titled, ‘Child’s Play’. The Performing Arts Centre was transformed into a ‘Limited Edition’ experience where audience members moved through immersive and interactive Arts spaces, including a paper forest and large-scale projection space. The event also included food trucks for attendees to make a whole evening of it. Year 12 student, Will Pipe, had been working with the Neon team to light the festival. “It’s fun working behind the scenes solving the audio and

technical problems,” he said he enjoyed the teamwork and was excited to see it all come together. By sharing this event with the school and broader community, students and teachers celebrated their success by demonstrating teamwork, confidence and the joy of creating and performing.

Donation Day joy

Hervey Bay BARBECUES, SMOKERS, OUTDOOR FURNITURE, WOOD HEATING AND MORE IN STORE NOW!

MACE Wide Bay recieved a donation from the Urangan Markets. MACE raise money to empower youth SEVEN community groups received a helping hand with donations from volunteers at the Urangan Pier Park Community Markets last weekend for their Donation Day. The not-for-profit markets raised $21,000 in the last quarter that they generously donated to selected charities. Local charities chosen were Red Bike Adventures, MACE Wide Bay, Hervey Bay Hospital children’s ward, Yoorana Women’s Refuge, We Care 2, Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre’s Comfort Kitchen and HBNC and Red Tape Shredder’s Bay’s Biggest Sleepout. Urangan Pier Park Community Markets secretary Jeanine Croxon said each of

the chosen charities received $3000 to assist them in delivering services for the homeless, feeding the needy and supporting children in our local children’s ward at the hospital. “We did a theme this time; we decided to focus on homeless and feeding the poor,” bearing in mind the impact COVID has had on many, she said. “Our purpose for being here is to support the local community and make a difference.” After all market expenses are paid, the remaining money from the stallholder fees is donated to selected charities each quarter. Ms Croxon said the markets are run by a team of volunteers who love seeing the money

going to supporting local community groups. Ms Croxon encouraged community groups to apply for a grant through the market’s website at www. piermarketsherveybay.com The next Donation Day will be held at Christmas time. The market comprises approximately 80 stalls, selling a wide range of artisan handicrafts, fashion and local produce. Live music and a food court are also a part of this popular market. The iconic Urangan Pier Park Community Markets are located adjacent to the Urangan Pier and operate every Wednesday and Saturday from 7am to 1pm.

EVENING CULTURE CAF This month we will explore the culture and food of the South Pacific region in a special evening event.

ZONTA Club of Hervey Bay hopes to save the lives of mothers in developing countries with six simple tools. On Saturday 21 August the Zonta Club of Hervey Bay, alongside 30 volunteers, gathered in the Urangan QCWA Hall to assemble birthing kits. They prepared 600 birthing kits to help women deliver their babies safely and hygienically. An estimated 385,000 women die annually in childbirth, many from preventable infections. The package, which cost only five dollars, contains six basic items; black plastic sheet, a pair of gloves, a sterile blade, a bar of soap, gauze and string.

Businesses called to support community next big ideas FRASER Coast’s next big idea needs the business community support to get off the ground. Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre is putting the call out for sponsors for the next Community Ideas Pitch Night. This unique event – established as part of the Fraser Coast Community Social Plan – has served as a launching pad for some remarkable projects making a real difference in our community. It exists to foster innovation and to encourage grassroots ideas that address the real issues in our community. HBNC invites local businesses to invest in this project’s future by becoming prize sponsors for the next event, coming up on Tuesday, 12 October in Maryborough. Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre CEO, Tanya Stevenson, said the goal of the Pitch Night was simple but profound, “It’s an event that recognises how many amazing ideas are out there in our community that don’t quite have the finances, resources or awareness to really get going.” “Some amazing projects, including Hope in a Suitcase, Outreach Doctors, Bite the Blue, and the Bub Hub got their start or took their next big step at Pitch Night. “We want to see this ideas incubator continue growing and making real, grassroots change in our community.”

Intergenerational High Tea was the February 2021 winner. Since then, three high tea events (presented by HBNC’s social enterprise, The Wandering Teapot) have gone ahead, breaking down isolation and bringing together different generations. While Bite the Blue did not take out one of the Pitch Night prizes, its founder Jessie McCarthy has leveraged her project's exposure through the event. She has now established ambassadors and partnerships throughout the community to combat loneliness and mental health concerns.

CHEAPER and faster broadband internet is coming for 2,742 businesses across the region with NBN Co announcing the establishment of a Business Fibre Zone at Hervey Bay. Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said the new Zone will allow local businesses to access fibre with speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second, enabling a range of new business opportunities that previously weren’t possible. “This has the potential to revitalise and reshape our region, from the services locals are able to access, to industries like tourism, hospitality and health services which are all major employers in their own right,” Mr Pitt said. “Access to high speed internet will allow local businesses to grow and thrive, break into new markets, and secure our longterm growth potential. “The Business Fibre Zone offers no upfront build costs and discounts of up to 68 per cent on NBN Co’s current wholesale plans.” Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the 44 new Zones would help thousands of

businesses participate in the digital economy on an equal footing, and bring the total number of Business Fibre Zones to 284. “As we manage and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, investment in local business communications infrastructure will ensure that businesses can recover quickly, while taking advantage of domestic and international markets,” Minister Fletcher said. “Improving access to high speed, reliable, and high quality broadband is a key part of the Australian Government’s communications agenda, which is why we are investing directly in the electorate of Hinkler.” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said council had been advocating for better and cheaper nbn services for more of Hervey Bay, so this new announcement was welcome news that would provide a boost for local businesses. The announcement last week will support an additional 60,000 eligible businesses across Australia, taking the total number of businesses within a Business Fibre Zone to 850,000, of which nearly 300,000 businesses are in regional Australia.

NBN’s Enterprise Ethernet, NBN Co’s fastest symmetrical wholesale product offers these businesses plans of up to 1 Gigabit per second at the same price as CBD areas. This extension to NBN Co’s Business Fibre Zone initiative builds on the $700 million package announced last year to transform the accessibility and affordability of businessgrade fibre and allow small to medium businesses to embrace opportunities for growth. The announcement comes at the same time as research by Frontier Economics shows NBN Co’s business fibre investments will contribute up to $7.2 billion annually to the economy by 2024. The research also forecasts productivity benefits for businesses of up to 12 per cent, with regional areas particularly set to benefit and evidence of increased retail competition which is good for businesses. For more information about the NBN Business Fibre Zones initiative, including the new pricing options, visit www. nbnco.com.au/corporateinformation/about-nbn-co/ corporate-plan/business-fibreinitiative.

Ms Leslie said they were planning to display Butchulla artwork. Upon a GP referral, guests are admitted into the hospice if they are nearing the end of their life and not coping in a hospital or home setting at no cost. The $3 million hospice has been funded in part by Federal and local Government funding and thanks to generous donations from the community. “We rely on federal, state and community funding and currently have a couple of years of operational funding to keep us afloat until we can build more relationships within the community,” Ms Leslie said. Creating about 30 jobs for the community, the hospice also welcomes volunteers, “We've been really blessed with volunteers that have just put

up their hand already, planting trees, laying turf.” The continued operation of the hospice requires community support through volunteer involvement, fundraising and donations. Volunteers can express interest by registering through the website www. frasercoasthospice.com.au Opportunities cover a wide range of roles, including maintenance, outside work, cleaning, office work and helping with patient meal preparations, to name a few. Ms Leslie also encouraged making things off-site to make the place feel more welcoming such as quilts. All are invited to a Community Open Day on Saturday 9 October, at the Fraser Coast Hospice, Urraween Rd, behind the Hervey Bay Visitor Information Centre.

REFLECTION rooms, herb meditation gardens, cuddle beds and 24-hour care are some of the features in the Fraser Coast’s first purposebuilt hospice for the terminally ill. After three years of planning, the Fraser Coast Hospice will officially open its doors to the public in time for the annual World Hospice Day on Saturday, 9 October. The homely six-bed facility has been the passion project of founder and secretary Jasine Lensie. Thanks to her long hours alongside a team of dedicated palliative care workers and builders, it has become a reality. The Hospice mission is to provide safe, quality, end-oflife care in partnership with the community. Ms Leslie said the hospice would provide the community with another option for people facing end of life, away from hospital or their homes. It will be where people at the end of their lives can receive expert, compassionate care and grief support for the families, said Ms Leslie. “Working in palliative care can be really heart wrenching but also really beautiful and satisfying.” Moving to Hervey Bay 14 years ago, Ms Leslie noticed a missing link in palliative care; the hospice closes that gap. She said she hoped it would be a place like home where people and their families are supported by palliative care staff for free. The spacious facility has been thoughtfully designed to include several reflection areas, family meeting rooms and large, private guest rooms for families to gather and spend together. Each room has a garden view with private verandah; doors are wide enough to wheel the beds outside, and visits from pets are also welcome. The rooms will contain a fold-out sofa bed for visitors to stay overnight.

BIRTHDAYS are always significant to celebrate, but a ten-year milestone is one to create lasting memories. Hervey Bay’s Cool Country Social Music group will celebrate ten years of crooning and entertaining the community in their upcoming music event on 12 September. The club’s 10th anniversary was in September 2020, but due to COVID, it will be a belated celebration. The Open Day concert will feature some of the early establishing members, Tina Bagnall, Ron O’Keefe and Frederick Harrop as guest artists. The club's humble beginnings date back to 2010 when Glenn Hand arrived in Hervey Bay from New Zealand said club president Max Butler. Glenn had entertained in NZ as a guitarist and vocalist and saw the need for a music club on the Fraser Coast. He placed an advertisement in the local newspaper seeking interest in forming a music club for musicians, singers, and the public to attend social concerts. Several musicians and singers then established a band and started practising. By September 2010, a number of people thought it would be ‘cool’ to play country music, and other genres and the ‘Cool Country Music Club’

Frederick Harrop, one of the founding members of Hervey Bay’s Cool Country Social Music group will perform as a guest artist at the 10th anniversary celebration was established. The club has continued to grow to the popular and vibrant social club today, with many new members joining annually. The club practices every Thursday night from 4pm at the Hervey Bay Senior Citizens Hall in Torquay. It costs $5.00 per session, including light supper. If you sing, play or just love to listen to music, you are welcome to join and enjoy the fellowship and music. The club holds its Open Day concerts on the second Sunday

of each month. “Come along and enjoy a great afternoon of entertainment,” said Mr Butler. Doors open at 11:30am for a 12 noon start at the Senior Citizens Hall. Canteen facilities, lucky door, raffle and plenty of entertainment for a $5 entry fee. The special ten-year celebration Open Day will be held on Sunday 12 September at the Hervey Bay Senior Citizens Hall, located on the corner of Totness St and Denmans Camp Road, Torquay.

MFC Five generations – L to R – Mark, Bev, Heather with Koa in her arms and Kyle. WHEN Bill and Heather Drury married in November 1944, little did they know they would be embarking on a five-generation adventure that would eventuate in 2021. The pioneering family of Hervey Bay welcomed the start of its fifth-generation with baby Koa in May this year. The line started with Bill Drury, born in Maryborough in 1924. His parents, George and Winn Drury owned the Seaview Boarding House, now the site of the Win Construction building above WetSide water park. Bill passed away in 2008 at the age of 84, but Heather recently celebrated her 95th birthday and is still very involved with her large family. Bev was the first born in

1945 of Bill and Heather’s six children. She grew up and went to school in Hervey Bay. In 1963 she married Geoff Cornwell, and they moved out west to Tara for the first ten years of their marriage. They had two sons while at Tara, with Mark being their first born in 1967. The family moved back to Pialba in 1973 with their sons attending the Hervey Bay State School, the same school Bev and her siblings completed their education. Bev and her son Mark had the same Head Master – Mr Ken Baker until his retirement in 1975. When Mark finished his primary and secondary education, he went to university to complete an Engineering degree and now works worldwide as a project

manager for gold mining companies. Mark married Angela in Brisbane in 1992 and had three sons. In May this year, their second son Kyle, born in 1996, continued the Drury / Cornwell line when he and Alice had a son, Koa. Five generations have cemented this branch of the Drury legacy, with hopefully more to come as the decedents grow their family lines. In her 95th year, Heather Drury has proudly watched on as her family has grown, prospered, and started individual milestones. It is quite an achievement to see a pioneering family of Hervey Bay grow to have a five-generation family line.

FIGHT NIGHT! BRING BACK THE BIFF When sport becomes assault... where is the line!

We were lucky enough to be invited to Rippers Gym “Fight Night” on the weekend. It was an exhibition of some of the most talented Muay Thai competitors in Queensland, demonstrating their skills for the chance to win a trophy – but also raising much needed funds for a local charity “Bite the blue”. Watching the matches made us think about the law in Sport. Technically, when you sign up to play sport such as boxing, football and martial arts, you are consenting to being assaulted. The rules of the game set out what you have consented to. They do not, however, change the law. There have been many occasions in professional football where players will throw punches or step outside the boundaries of the rules of the game. Players cannot consent to these assaults if they are not within the rules. The Administrators of the Sport are responsible for managing players conduct on the field. In NRL for example, the Judiciary is made up of former players who convene three person panels to make decisions on in-field incidents. It is chaired by a NSW Supreme Court Justice.

In rare and more serious incidents of on-field violence, the police and prosecuting authorities will intervene. One of the more famous cases of this was the 1985 Hawthorn v Geelong AFL match where Leigh Matthews broke the jaw of Neville Bruns. He was charged by police, pled guilty and received a fine and a 12 month good behaviour bond. In 2013, the NRL made specific rules about throwing onfield punches after the opening match of the State of Origin, Gallen v Myles. Ultimately, when you are playing sport, you must play within the rules. Stepping outside the boundaries of acceptable conduct can leave you exposed to disciplinary action and potentially criminal charges. It is no longer acceptable to promote gratuitous violence within sport, which is why it is unlikely that the NRL will be Bringing back the Biff anytime soon.

If you need some assistance with potential criminal charges, make an appointment to see one of our Solicitors at the Firm.

I’m thrilled that the Premier has heard my request to bring the Queensland Cabinet to Hervey Bay later this month.

Baldwin could not wipe the smile from his face as he fronted the local media postgame. “It has been a pretty long road for us, and I think relieved is the word to describe how I am feeling,” he said. Baldwin believed his team’s midfield set up the team’s win with their control and winning of the football. “I think it was a team performance but special mention to our three captains John Sims, Chris Wicks and Lachlan Woodhams, who were fantastic,” he said. Baldwin believes the team’s hard work has been rewarded with this premiership. He announced that he would be standing down from the coaching role next season to spend time in his boat fishing. “You can’t top this, so that will do,” Baldwin said.

All our community champions will be celebrated on 19 January. The 2022 Australia Day Awards presentation will be held at the Brolga Theatre and Convention Centre in Maryborough on Wednesday, 26 January. Nominations are open now and nomination forms can be downloaded from www.frasercoast.qld. gov.au/australia-day with

Wildlife talks

Fraser Coast Branch of Wildlife Queensland will present talks on crocodiles. at the Hervey Bay Library on 17 September and at the Maryborough Library on 24 September. Tina Ball, Senior Wildlife Officer, will be giving the Hervey Bay presentation. Penny Flaherty, Wildlife Officer, will be speaking in Maryborough. She has had an extensive history through different wildlife agencies from vet nursing in Maryborough, to the RSPCA, and for the last four years with the Department of Environment and Science. The Croc Wise education

program is aimed at reducing the risk of crocodile attack. The Maryborough/Fraser Coast area is classed as a Zone F – atypical habitat. In this zone, the risk of humancrocodile interaction is low. However, as there has been proven sightings and the removal of two crocodiles (one 3.2metres and the other 3.8metres) by the Department, from the Mary River in 2013 and 2014, it is important to provide information and education to members of the public who use the waterways in our region. Both talks begin at 1pm and run for an hour. Bookings can be made by phoning the Library on 41974220 or by booking online by going to ‘What’s on” on the Library’s site and then registering on: “eventbrite”.

Longer dog registration period

Residents are being reminded that dog registration is not due for renewal until the end of October this year. Council had provided a oneoff dog registration extension in 2020/21 to ensure future registration renewals were not due at the same time as property rates. “While dog registration has traditionally been due by 31 August, this year it is not due until 31 October with future renewal periods to run from 1 November to 31 October each year,” Cr Truscott said.

Annual registration fee for desexed and microchipped dogs is now $30. “Registration fees collected contribute to the cost of Council’s animal management operations including compliance inspections, dog attack investigations, the running of animal pounds and the adoption centre, fenced off-leash areas and responsible pet care programs.” Council will also be continuing to offer free first year dog registration to encourage residents to register their animals. It is compulsory for dogs to be registered with Council from twelve weeks of age and within 14 days of owners moving to the Fraser Coast region, while dogs also need to be desexed before 22 weeks of age. More information is available at www.frasercoast. qld.gov.au/animal-registration

Premier to visit Hervey Bay

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced that the Queensland Cabinet would meet in Hervey Bay on Monday 20 September 2021. The Queensland Government’s regional Cabinet meeting in Hervey Bay later this month will provide a golden opportunity for Council and the community to speak to decision makers face-to-face and showcase the region, Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

LETTEROFGRATITUDE Dear Cancer Care Unit, Hervey Bay As we go through life we meet many challenges, some we cannot overcome on our own. When they are in the medical area we have to depend on our doctors and the medical staff to come to our needs. These people are dedicated members of our society, without them we could not survive. Cancer is one condition that has a major effect on the life of so many and without the development of new drugs and treatment being put together to combat these diseases, lives would have been lost. Melanoma and Markel Cell Carcinomas and many other conditions are being treated as a result of this research;

immunotherapy is one. Hervey Bay Cancer Care Clinic has the task of administering and treating these patients, and those of you who have attended this clinic will know what I am saying when I express my deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff, what a wonderful group of people they are, whether your treatment is short term or long you soon develop a relaxed sense of wellbeing where you forget that you have a condition that could be life threatening, there is always an air of happiness in the room, polite conversation where one forgets ones fears and look forward to your next treatment day. These people become a part of your life, they show great pride in what they do and

we will always be eternally grateful to them for what. I am just completing a two-year treatment program, and to the nurses and staff, you will always have a special place in my heart and I look on you as part of my extended family, Rhonda and I thank you for everything you have done for me.

Regards Gordon J West

Media Work Experience “I never knew how difficult controlling teenagers to get in a photo was,” Ben McGrath

WORK EXPERIENCE: Over the long weekend, I experienced what the life of a sports journalist involves and how tough the job is. I participated in activities that were enjoyable yet a great learning experience. Activities included getting to know the website and how the analytics worked. Next, I had to take photographs of Football, AFL, and Hockey, including action and presentation shots. Another job had me helping out with postgame interviews, asking players and coaches of AFL and hockey how they went and where they saw themselves next year. Finally, I was challenged and given the task of writing this article. I never knew how difficult controlling teenagers to get in a photo was—interviewing people much older than me was pretty nerve-racking. INSIDEWBMG

A PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY

Driven by the customer's experience KELLIE Oborn is one of those uniquely talented yet humble personalities. When the Hervey Bay Advertiser sat down to chat with her about this edition of ‘Inside WBMG’, she simply described herself as the financial controller. It became quickly evident, though there is nothing simple about the many hats and roles Kellie wears and plays inside one of the largest businesses on the Fraser Coast. Her office is a little out of the way and flanked by her support team in adjacent workspaces. What immediately strikes you are the twenty or so folders on her desk, all bulging and meticulously sorted; there is some serious business happening right here. When she briefly explains that’s what you get when you are selling over 200 cars a month across two cities; managing multiple simultaneous building projects; overseeing fixed operations and a have direct report team of four, all of whom have vital roles in the business, you start to see the true scope of her role. It is noticeably apparent why she is a highly accomplished businesswoman in her own right, bringing a wealth of knowledge born out of her involvement in the heavily male-dominated motoring industry across the last thirty-five years. Initially looking to pursue a career in the police force when she finished high school, which obviously would have been a great fit for her personality and outlook, Kellie was only 17 when she graduated year 12. Tantalisingly close, but six months short of the 18 years old she needed to apply. A trait she has carried throughout her working life, she wasn’t content just to sit on her hands until her next birthday rolled around. She applied and was successful in grabbing a parttime role in the parts department of her local Ford dealer in Port Pirie. The three-decade journey in the sometimes rough and tumble of the motoring industry had begun.

“I never actually made it into the police force after that, and I guess in many ways, that shows what is meant to be, will be. “I loved that first job in the game and stayed in that first dealership for nine years. It allowed me to be exposed to not only the parts role I

“When I became a partner in the Rum City Auto’s company in Bundaberg, back in the earlier parts of the 2000s, I was also the General Manager of that dealership. “As there was then and certainly is now, there is a substantial number of women in Queensland

Wide Bay Motor Group’s financial controller Kellie Oborn wears many hats began with, but I progressed on to service and administration. “It was an incredibly valuable grounding for me,” Kellie said. Over the period of the next two decades, Kellie cut a swath of experience for herself across multiple motoring dealerships in various parts of the country, learning skills and educating herself with a focus for success.

who have their full Motor Dealers Licence. “I can’t pop the bonnet and do an oil change, but there is a lot more to running a large business than just that.” After making the move to Hervey Bay, Kellie accepted the role as Operations Manager at Wide Bay Motor Group, adding the Financial Controllers role to that thereafter. “We have an incredible team of people here

at WBMG group, close to 100 staff across both sites. The culture here is first class, and that emanates from our Dealer Principal Jason Wiegmink down. “He leads by example; he will open car doors for customers as they roll up to the service department if he is standing there. So those values, the customer's overall experience with us, has to stem well beyond the actual purchase of a car.” “Our goal in the business is to make sure everyone who comes to work at WBMG feels like they are a part of something. “We have to be constantly teaching and imparting experience. As a member of the senior leadership team, that is a major focus for me. “There is always a lot going on, and no two days are the same.” “We are fortunate to have four of the top ten selling brands in the country, but that in itself brings expectations and responsibility to give the customer the very best experience, always, without fail’. Kellie is one of the rare breeds whose expectations on herself and commitment to her roles are higher than any organisation could place upon her. So it is unsurprising that she simply likes to relax, when we asked her what she does away from work. “We have a Labrador cross rescue dog called Spencer. We love to go for quiet walks with him, potter in the garden and just enjoy some quiet time when the weekend comes around.” “I do think more about retirement the further along I go in life’s journey. But I love my work and enjoy the challenges it brings. “I also especially enjoy helping our team members to be the very best versions of themselves and enjoy the opportunities that can come from experience, just as I have over the years.” “I’m sure I’ll slow down eventually, just not quite yet.”

Once in a generation property boom shows no sign of slowing QBCC82145

“BUILDERS YOU CAN TRUST” We pride ourselves on our personal involvement at every stage, our willingness to listen, our attention to detail and our commitment to making the building process stress free. THE FRASER Coast Property Industry recently hosted expert Terry Ryder from Hotspotting.com as he addressed a large crowd at the Beach House Hotel, to provide a statistical analysis of the regions property market. It is fair to say the results were startling. Our twelve month growth to June 2021 was greater than the Gold Coast, with most suburbs averaging an upswing in excess of 20% growth in the last year alone. During his detailed presentation, Terry highlighted sixteen factors for the up-cycle including government stimulus, household savings because of the pandemic, life choices, exodus to affordable lifestyle, low availability of homes on the market and low-cost finance. Terry remarked that the last real estate boom Hervey Bay experienced was heavily impacted by the GFC, but that was a different time. Developers flooded the market and over-supply caused prices

to drop and they never really came back. He addressed the price growth in the last year that should have happened in the last decade, and today’s boom is being fuelled by the exit to the affordable lifestyle drive. ‘Beautiful regions like Hervey Bay are booming on the back of affordable living, and the trend will be long term. There is no oversupply of property, in fact, there is an undersupply, and that keeps pricing where owners want it to be’ Terry said. The experts say it’s far from over and Hervey Bay is still early in the cycle. Expert consensus agrees that our region has at least two more years of this boom to run. Terry has talked about the billions of dollars in infrastructure in our region that will continue to fuel growth and jobs. We also still have the exodus from southern states to come, once lockdowns have finished. In summary Hervey

Bay has good population growth, housing affordability, diverse economy, investment infrastructure, low vacancy rates, strong property price increases and rising sales activity. All this amounts to a very strong property market for the next few years and beyond. We have finally matured into a sound investment market. FCPIA live events are accessible to both members and non-members. Our events are not just for in the real estate industry; every region has a localised economy that feeds off the property market; they go hand in hand. Please watch our social media channels for future event announcements. If you want to listen to Terrys’ speech or read his report, please go onto our website for all the information at www. fcpia.com.au

ARE YOU THINKING OF SELLING IN TOOGOOM?

We’ve grown into a second office as the Toogoom market continues to fly! Allen Property is growing with the region and we have opened our second office, offering our sellers two locations to promote their properties. We are now at Shop 2/6 Jeppesen Road, and our existing office at 65 Moreton Street, Toogoom. We will be working between both offices with sales, and our property management will be based at 2/6 Jeppesen Road. Over the last two years, properties in Toogoom have increased in value by up to, and above, $100,000! This is phenomenal growth and many sellers are taking this opportunity to get a premium price for their property, positioning themselves to move on with some plans they have been considering for years. NOW IS AN AMAZING TIME TO SELL WITH TOOGOOM’S LEADING SALES TEAM. Our sales team had eight years of in depth Toogoom knowledge before opening Allen Property in 2018. Shane and Steve have held the highest number of sales, and highest median price, each year since.
