We attended both festivals as we were looking forwards to going to “community” events that were an annual delight in the past but had been cancelled due to Covid.Wealso wanted to be more a part of our new community.
BAY is the socalled Whale capital, and as such, we should embrace our tag as a community. If visitors came that weekend to enjoy our Whale Festival, perhaps it was not up to the standard as the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers parades of years gone by.
The lady on the other end answered every question I had before I even asked it. Brilliant. The next available time; how long it would take; how early I could drop it off; and asking me if there was a time I needed it back and if there was anything on the vehicle I needed to have explained to me. And to top it all off, the execution of it all was beyond my expectation.
Great customer service just brings a smile to your face
WE’VE all been there. The shop assistant who treats you like they are doing you a favour serving you, or the tradesperson who doesn’t turn up on time, despite relying on a mobile phone to do everything but call you to keep you updated. I am an optimist, and I always look to serve my customers the best that I possibly can, and I relish it when I get that great service in return. A fisherman always sees another fisherman fromOverafar.the last week, I have had two enlightening pieces of absolute first-class customer service.
Secondly,Seamless. I needed a plumber, and I was referred to Guaranteed Plumbing by a friend. Disclaimer, I want to call a plumber like I want a root canal. I received an immediate text confirmation of the booking time and what it was for, another message the day before reminding me, and a further message on the day of the booking that told me their distance away and arrival time. Not long after they left, another message thanking me and inviting me to give feedback on anything they could have done better to improve their business and my experience.
Firstly, I had reason to book my car in with Wide Bay Motor Group for a service, and I called to find out the how and when.

The Whale festival took five mins to walk around. One whale kite blowing away, two ice cream vans with HUGE queues and then just stalls selling a variety of tit tat (there is better at the Urangan Pier markets).Thenexpensive food trucks. One touch pool activity with sad empty fish tanks. SO glad our son is now 15 - what was there to do for the children? Where was the educational value of this event? Didn’t stay for the parade and reading reviews after are glad we didn’t waste our time.

But I speak with some authority. For 22 years I was employed at the Chronicle and Observer newspapers, with many years as the Hervey Bay Manager. The Observer was the official sponsor of the Whale Festival parade. Back in the day, it was a street parade after dark, which meant participating businesses and floats required lighting, and generators. WE lead the parade in our special vintage car, lovingly restored and driven by long time local Joe Beck (RIP Joe) and his wifeAssemblingJoy. in Frank St, kilometres of participants paraded the Esplanade towards the Seafront Oval. We had bands, businesses, amazing floats, and huge community involvement. The streets had thousands of people/ families along the footpaths, watching the parade. When the final entry, usually a police car, thousands walked along the Esplanade to the Seafront oval for family fun/ food, and entertainment. As a major sponsor, the newspaper would print several pages of photographs of the Parade.
Undeterred we tried again a few weeks later and bought tickets for the Seafood Festival. I was SO embarrassed to have wasted the money I apologised to my husband multiple times (he was lovely about it!!) For my entry, I got to “sit on the grass”, listen to music (which was nice but not when your leg has gone to sleep!) and use a portaloo (didn’t actually stay long enough to need the loo). The cooking demos were few and far between and were positioned next to the band so you couldn’t hear what was being said by the presenter.

THE PREMIER turned the sod on early works for a new train manufacturing workshop at Torbanlea as part of the largest investment in train manufacturing in Queensland’s history.Thesite will be home to a brand new train manufacturing workshop where 65 new trains will be built as part of the State Government’s $7.1 billion Queensland Train Manufacturing Program. In a further boost for the region, the Queenslandmade Train Manufacturing Program will partner with Fraser Coast high schools to help train the students who will form the backbone of the next generation of the local engineering and manufacturing workforce.Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the preferred proponent would be announced later this year and would be tasked with training and upskilling the local engineering and manufacturing workforce, which would include work with local Fraser Coast high schools.

New Fraser Coast expo set to be a winner









AN INNOVATIVE new jobs expo is coming to the Fraser Coast with the aim of being a one-stop employment shop for local jobseekers and businesses, and building a stable long-term workforce for a region on the brink of a boom.TheFraser Coast Industry and Careers Showcase will take place at the Maryborough Showgrounds on October 12, bringing together employers and trainers with current jobseekers as well as those on the hunt for a new or future career.Theshowcase, a partnership between Jobs Fraser Coast and Fraser Coast Regional Council, is open to jobseekers of all ages – from students and school leavers through to people returning to the workforce, looking for a career change or just looking for inspiration. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the indooroutdoor event was the only one of its kind in the region, providing real-world insights into a range of roles through live demonstrations, hands-on experiences and opportunities to talk to industry experts. “The showcase aims to help jobseekers not just to discover a new career in their own back yard, but also to find the pathway to get there, with the help of a range of training and education organisations who will also be exhibiting,” the Mayor said. “We also hope the event will be a big boost to our fantastic local employers, many of whom are struggling to fill vacancies and are frequently looking for skilled workers of all“Askinds.acouncil, we’re well aware of the employment and skills challenges our region continues to experience. “We needed to plan quite the journey for the finished sheets from Sydney to Hervey Bay – a significant logistical challenge due to each sheet being over 27 metres long and each bundle weighing in at an excess of 800 kilograms,” Mr Heath said. “I would like to thank the New South Wales and Queensland Police, as well as Fraser Coast Regional Council and everyone involved in the transportation of the roofing sheets – it required great planning and effort from all parties.”Weather permitting, all external roofing and cladding is anticipated to be finished in October 2022 with the plans for the facility to become operational in 2023.



Roof goes onto new mental health inpatient unit









RECENTLY Hervey Bay locals were fascinated by an uncommon sight; resting outside of their local hospital was a tower crane sitting proudly above the skyline. The crane was there to undertake the next stage of construction of the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service’s (WBHHS) 22-bed acute mental health inpatient unit. A substantial logistical project from manufacture to delivery, the underconstruction Hervey Bay mental health inpatient unit recently had roofing sheets arrive from Sydney and installed by a 70.8m high crane, which stretched out to become more than 40m above theWBHHSground.Acting Chief Executive Michael Lewczuk said the roof installation was a significant milestone for this project, and an exciting sign that construction was progressing well. “Our Fraser Coast mental health project will increase overall mental health beds across the region while also helping to divert mental health presentations away from the emergency department,” Mr Lewczuk“Creatingsaid.new support systems and increasing existing service capabilities will provide quality mental health support for members of our community.“Havingthe crane arrive and place the roof sheets onto the building is an exciting step on the journey towards completing the project.” WBHHS Director of Infrastructure Peter Heath said the roof sheets needed to be put together in the Lysaght’s Sydney factory as it was the only operation equipped with the dies to roll and turn flat metal into the required cut lengths from a spool.

The Pub Choir phenomenon taking cities around the country by storm is the inspiration behind the newest community group aimed at people affected by cancer, starting up in Hervey Bay. Driven by a motivation to overcome her own breast cancer diagnosis, Twila Whittingham has decided to “humbly offer my ‘gift’ to heal and bring moments of joy to ‘sisterhood’ members who are walking this path with me.” She said her cancer diagnosis initially sparked the fear we all face at some point; that our mortality is threatened. Ms Whittingham, with over 35 years choir experience, believes in the healing power of music and plans to guide the singing group on an expressive musical journey. The group will also be an opportunity to meet new people and make friends who are also facing the cancer challenge.“I’mexcited to find out how many will join us for our initial ‘6 week’ run.” “We are aiming for a large enough group to explore a lovely harmony.” “We want to raise the roof in song and if it is a roaring success, we will keep singing,” said Ms Whittingham. LOCALS were treated to a visit by ex-ironwoman Bonnie Hancock as she made a pit stop in Hervey Bay recently on her paddle around Australia on a surf ski. The ambitious paddler was on the home stretch to the Gold Coast, having covered more than 12,000 kilometres clockwise around the country when she stopped at the Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club.MsHancock set out over eight months ago, in December, with her husband and support crew, on a paddling adventure like no other and ended her journey lastAsweekend.wellasthe opportunity to test her limits, Ms Hancock used The Paddle of Aus as a fundraiser for Gotcha4Life an Australian mental fitness charity taking action to engage, educate and empower to end suicide. She hoped to raise $100,000 for the Whilecharity.shewas in Hervey Bay, she said was really excited to be so close to home. Ms Hancock is the first female Australian to circumnavigate the country and the fastest person to paddle around Australia. She is the fifth person in history to do the paddle. Council has invested significantly in the project with the construction of 13.5km of pathway from the Urangan Pier to Nikenbah and a 3.5km section from Piggford Lane to Stockyard Creek. In 2019, Council endorsed the Mary to Bay Trail Feasibility Study Development Plan to guide future works. “The new advisory committee will provide a forum for the community and user groups to make recommendations to Council on the development and management of the Fraser Coast Rail Trail and oversee the implementation of the development plan,” Cr Lewis said.The advisory committee will also include two Councillors (Chairman Cr Lewis and Cr Phil Truscott), one representative from the Department of Transport and Main Roads and one representative from Fraser Coast Tourism and Events. In the past two years, members of the Fraser Coast Bicycle Users Group have gained State Government and Council funding and been heavily involved in refurbishment works of sections of the trail.

FRASER Coast Libraries is looking for a new design of its library cards and is asking creative local youngsters to put forward ideas. “This is a terrific chance for youngsters to show their creativity,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. “The library card design contest is open to Fraser Coast Libraries members aged up to 17“Artistsyears. are not constrained by a theme, so they are free to create an original design of their choosing using any colours.“Wedo, however, advise entrants not to use plain lead pencils, light sketching, or fluorescent colours as these do not reproduce well.”

Fraser Coast residents are being encouraged to have their say on what they would prefer to see happen in and around the region’s drinking water catchments by 18 September.

“The Fraser Coast’s drinking water catchment areas are located along the Burrum River, the Mary River and Tinana Creek,” said Cr Lee. “These catchments don’t just provide drinking water though. They also support a wide range of land uses, including agriculture, grazing, forestry and residential properties.

I was born in Wellington, New Zealand, sixty-six years ago, but grew up in the province of Bay of Plenty. I am the oldest of five kids and have three brothers and a sister. I remember my childhood as being very sporty but happy. I moved to Australia in my twenties and called Gympie home for twenty-three years. What kind of work do you do? I am a carpenter by trade; it was a four-year apprenticeship. The job gives me a great sense of satisfaction. When driving with the kids or grandkids, I can point out the buildings I have helped build, from houses, schools, and hospitals. I feel very proud, particularly if I have done a good job! (laughs).Ialsodrove timber harvesters between the Fraser Coast and Gympie and a little further away to places like Cardwell and Ingham. How long have you called Hervey Bay home? We have lived in Hervey Bay for eight years. Before we moved here, I lived in Tin Can Bay, where I met my wonderful partner, Sue. We have toured most of Australia by caravan. Sue’s family lives in Hervey Jeff Luke would be the first to admit that he is a man of few words. He is a quiet achiever, and that’s the way he likes it. Jeff enjoys the simple things in life and is always ready for a laugh.

Bay, so that was one of the reasons we moved to this region. We now have grandkids here, so we have settled down a bit. We love the beach, and I am into anything to do with sand, swimming, and water. When did you decide you wanted to be a surf lifesaver? I began surf lifesaving in 1972 when I lived in New Zealand, but then life got in the way, which saw me step out of it for about forty years. After moving here, I met a few people that were interested in swimming and surf lifesaving, so I thought I would give it another go and became a volunteer surf lifesaver at the Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club. I enjoy it as much as ever. I love meeting people and forming friendships. I also like competing at surf lifesaving carnivals and roughly do about six carnivals a year. When I am helping to coach people on boards, skis, or swimming, I get a great feeling of satisfaction seeing those that I have coached improve. Do you have any other interests? I love going to restaurants. Good food and good service are very important. I also like nothing more than hooking the caravan up and finding a camping spot to enjoy. A few weekends ago we went to Proston with friends for a country music muster, that was a lot of fun. I would say that I enjoy life and have a great sense of humour, just ask my other half!
