United Trikers Australia Vice President Steve Schreiber loved riding his comfy trike around the Bay TRIKERS from all over Australia from as far north as Alice Springs, Townsville, Cairns and down to Inverell in NSW gathered for a week of riding and sightseeing recently. The United Trikers Australia (UTA) Inc Annual General Meeting was held in Hervey Bay this year, drawing about 65 colourful motorised three wheelers for a week of leisurely exploring the area while they attended the national AGM. After settling into their new home for the week at Ingenia Holiday Park the group took several rides as a group through the region, including a full public display and closeup photo opportunity last Saturday at Point Vernon. UTA Vice President Steve Schreiber said the Hervey Bay trip had been two years in the making and was a massive hit with the attendees. He said the group loved Hervey Bay's proximity to nearby places of interest, and the Esplanade was a picturesque road to ride along. The holiday park was also a factor in their decision to hold the gathering in Hervey Bay, “If

“The trikes are very safe and comfortable to ride,” said Mr Schreiber. Riding his trike since 1998, Mr Schreiber said he loved how comfortable and safe they are to ride, “It’s like being on a lounge chair on wheels; put your feet up, lean back a bit and off you go.” “There are no two trikes the same. People can splash out on customising their trike depending on how much cash they want to splash!” He said the average price for one of the colourful vehicles is around $80,000, with starting prices around $45,000. He said a lot of motor bike riders change to trikes as they get older when they struggle to support holding the bikes up, “with these things, you don’t have to put your feet down when you get to the traffic lights.” “If you see us out and about, give us a wave. We might not look friendly but we are!” The club boasts a strong family culture and fellowship amongst its broad range of members, appealing to many ex-bike riders and adventurers.

Mr Schreiber said one of the trip's highlights was “catching up with old friends as well as meeting the new members.” Other highpoints of the trip included a ride ‘Head to Head’ from River Heads to Burrum Heads, where they looked over to Walkers Point, then a trip over to Walkers Point to look back at Burrum Heads. The group had a great day out to Gundiah, where they received a warm welcome at the pub after their planned ride to Bundaberg was cancelled due to the heavy rain. Rain hail or shine, the members all rode their trikes to Hervey Bay, many with attached small caravans or trailers.

Coast kids’ chess gambit in life ACCLAIMED Netflix blockbuster, ‘The Queens Gambit’ has re-popularised the traditional game of chess, good news for children. According to new research by Monash University and Deakin University, children who were taught the game of chess, and played regularly, were more likely to be less risk-averse than their peers. Studies have shown that teaching chess at a young age can help young people deal with risk and reward later in life. In Hervey Bay, several schools offer chess clubs. Chess Club coordinator of Fraser Flames teams at Fraser Coast Anglican College, Eric Worrall said his students love playing and can see the benefits. He said the games require players to take aggressive actions, which provides an opportunity to manage risk, “By taking risks, players become aware of consequences.” “It teaches greater mindfulness of issues like logistics and organisation because playing

chess is very much about judging situations and working out an appropriate response.” Mr Worrall said these skills were helpful for later in life dealing with business or politics or any situation where strategic thinking is required. “There are lots of sports that will give an increased sense of risk management, but chess is focussed on the strategic, not the physical but mental skillset.” The Fraser Flames are the current leaders of Hervey Bay schools in the Gardiner Wide Bay South interschool chess tournaments. The champion club meets weekly after school for lively practice games, attended by close to 40 members, with numbers slowly increasing over time. Mr Worrall said the club consisted mostly of primary aged students, but some enthusiastic secondary students managed to fit the club into their busy schedule. Lead chess player of the Fraser Flames, 11 year old Erika Worrall has been playing chess for a

few years and said she liked the history behind the game and, “It’s a great sport; you don’t need to be a strong athlete; you just need to trust your mind and trust your gut.” The concepts of risk and reward is key to playing the game with players sacrificing pieces with the chance to win. As in life, many rewards can be gained from some risks and sacrifice, but it is a fine line between calculated risk taking and reckless behaviour. Researchers put this notion to the test in primary school students and found those that had regular chess lessons and repeatedly played chess over time were less risk averse than their peers. Published in the Journal of Development Economics, the research team conducted a field experiment to examine the effects of intensive 30 hour chess program with more than 400 Year 5 students who had no previous exposure to the game. In a survey conducted with students 10 months after the

chess program, 99% said they wanted more chess lessons, 94.5% had played chess with a classmate in the previous week, and 87.5% said they played chess regularly with friends or family. Professor Asad Islam, leader of the study, said chess could help model, nurture and teach good risk-taking behaviour to children that will help them be better prepared to meet life’s challenges. “Children need to know how to take calculated risks. If children are too risk averse it might prevent them from swimming at the beach, going to a public park or participating in contact sports for risk of injury.” “Later in life, this could also extend to adolescent behaviours such as drugs, smoking, truancy, involvement in crime and in romantic relationships.” The research indicates that schools across Australia should strongly consider integrating the teaching of chess in the classroom to help young people deal with risk and reward later in life.

Making Mother’s Day mean more THE WOMEN in Super Mother’s Day Classic will once again bring Australians together on Mother’s Day to celebrate and honour those affected by breast cancer and raise vital funds for breast cancer research. After having to go virtual last year, the Mother’s Day Classic is returning this year to Hervey Bay on Sunday 9 May with local community participation right across Australia. This year, people can join the event at Urangan Park, near the Pier to walk, run or jog on Mother’s Day, all in the name of getting active for breast cancer research. Kylie Howe, first time Hervey Bay Mother’s Day Classic coordinator, is excited to be taking the organising reins to ensure the worthy event continues. She will be co-hosting the event with Councillor Jade Wellings. Ms Howe said they are hoping around 500 people will participate. Ms Howe was inspired to get involved when she experienced losing her step mother to breast cancer. “My dad’s partner’s Annie passed away from breast cancer around six years ago. What challenges and joy have you experienced raising twins? Nothing compares to having two babies to watch grow up together and we are in awe of their bond - something we will never truly understand. It has been the most amazing and beautiful journey. The biggest challenge was when they were babies – how do you decide which crying baby to comfort first? How do you decide who to feed first, who to bath first? The guilt surrounding those early months and not being able to provide for them like I would a “singleton” was by far the most challenging part. The early toddler years when they would both run in opposite directions was also incredibly difficult. Keeping them safe has always been a challenge!

How would you describe the bond between the twins? They have a very special bond but it is not without fights and dramas. Imagine having someone by your side at all times from the minute you were conceived. The other twin is the first person they see in the morning, and the last person they see at night. I think because we

have a large family the bond between the two isn’t as noticeable because there are other siblings to share bonds with. I would imagine that if twins were the only children in a family that their bond with different.

Torquay Hotel undergoes major renovation PUBLICAN Darren Carter has seen a lot during his tenure at the Torquay Hotel, and as he celebrates 19 years at the helm this week, he talks about the upcoming plans to continue investing back into the facility, their commitment to the Hervey Bay community and what has changed over the course of the last two decades. Interviewing Darren across a high top table, he never brakes stride talking about the business his family and the Mills family have built over the last 19 years, his eyes intermittingly glancing across the venue, keeping watch over all that happens. “I was working for ALH prior to coming here to the Torquay Hotel. We have operated the pub here for the best part of two decades along with outlets in Proserpine, Woodgate and Gladstone; it’s a constantly evolving business,” Mr Carter said. Guest speaker Haans Sivers will be talking about her global expereinces of defending the Southern Ocean FEARLESS marine activist group Sea Shepherd are relaunching the Hervey Bay Chapter of the global group on mission to protect and conserve all marine wildlife. The relaunch event will take place at the Hervey Bay Community Centre on 17 April from 6pm with a host of informative speakers followed by a special screening of award-winning film ‘Defend, Conserve, Protect!’ The film follows a group of Sea Shepherd activists in their battle to defend Minke whales in the Southern Ocean. Defend, Conserve, Protect! was named best international documentary at the American Documentary Film Festival in 2019. It offers it's viewers an exploration of the global marine activism movement and serves as a powerful reminder that our oceans need us now more than ever. National Sea Shepherd coordinator Rennae Miers said she was excited to see the Hervey Bay Chapter relaunching as, “We have great support in Hervey Bay; there’s a lot of people that want to get active.” She said she saw a need for the group to restart as there was a lot of ongoing support and the time was right. Hervey Bay Chapter is currently a team of four led by Sara Hashdown, with more people anticipated to join the group after the grand opening relaunch event. Ms Miers said Ms Hashdown got in touch with her and expressed disappointment that

the nearest chapter was the Sunshine Coast, limiting the Hervey Bay local’s involvement with the organisation. After discussions, Ms Miers decided to move forward with Ms Hashdown as one of the coordinators for the Hervey Bay Chapter. Ms Miers said there was previously a small chapter in Hervey Bay between 2010 and 2013 but the interest seemed to have grown again. “The aim is to get people on the ground to spread the word of what is happening with our oceans; this is our mission.” Ms Miers said there were many aspects to the impactful organisation, “There’s a lot of stuff happening globally within Sea Shepherd that Australian people may not be aware or involved with such as working with the African Governments and bringing down fleets of illegal poachers.” “We make an impact and turn heads as a group in our ‘uniforms’.” “Sea Shepherd Australia concentrates on marine debris.” Sea Shepherd’s message over these last four decades has been consistent and transparent: to ‘expose, intercept, and oppose illegal operations that damage and destroy marine wildlife and habitats,’ winning many accolades and awards. Ms Miers said the Hervey Bay group would be holding more documentary screenings and events in addition to raising awareness and funds at local markets.

Ms Miers said there were many ways people could be involved, “You can join the team and become a volunteer – hands on, gloves on, let’s get into it; you can support from the sidelines by being a DAC Member (Direct Action Crew) as a monthly giver; or by giving a one-off donation; people can also sign up to our regular newsletters to stay informed.” The informative relaunch event will host about 25 volunteers from Brisbane for an entertaining evening of speakers, film viewing, live music, stalls and discussion. It will commence with a presentation by Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour, followed by talks about APEX, marine debris, protecting the oceans, and plenty of crew members roaming around to have a chat with. Guest speaker Hanns Sivers, a global veteran crew member for over ten years will be talking about her extensive experiences on the frontline, defending the Southern Ocean. Ms Miers urges all to, “Please get onboard and help save the oceans.” “Learn about Sea Shepherd and get involved in Hervey Bay.” Relaunch event on Saturday 17 April at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, 22 Charles St, Pialba. New club house for Sports Precinct A NEW community club house is being constructed at the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct to provide space for two local sporting groups and more facilities for use during major events. Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders welcomed the new development. “The Sports and Recreation Precinct has been such a success for the region, bringing people together when we need it most. “Early works will start in April, and that can’t come soon enough so we can get locals employed as soon as possible. “Hopefully this project will help our local teams to be more competitive and we can see some more home-grown stars.” Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said the construction was all part of the Palaszczuk Government’s plan for economic recovery. “This is fantastic upgrade to an already great community facility,” Mr Tantari said. “It’s been great to see our local teams using the precinct to train and play, it’s been a real

focal point for the community. “The upgrade will make that facility even better, bringing in more teams and critically employing local workers during the construction phase. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the sports precinct was providing local residents with access to new high-quality sporting fields and helping to attract events which bring more visitors to the region. “It’s now two years since the sports precinct opened and it’s been heartening to see how local netball, football and OzTag players have embraced the new facilities,” he said. “We are continuing to make improvements at the precinct, with new lights installed at two fields last year and three new fields to be completed later this year. “Council has now awarded the tender to Ausco Modular to develop a community club house that will provide office and storage space for the Fraser Coast Cycling Club and Oztag Hervey Bay, along with a new first aid room, kiosk, umpires’

room and additional showers, toilets and change rooms. “This will be the third club house at the precinct, with both Hervey Bay Netball and Football Hervey Bay also having their own club houses.” The community club house is being developed with the support of a $1.1 million grant through the State Government’s COVID Works for Queensland funding program. Site preparation will begin in April with the club house expected to be operational by late June. “Whilst sport keeps us physically active, it also keeps us socially connected. It is where lasting memories are made and fond friendships formed,” said Cr Seymour. “The completion of stage one of the sports precinct was a significant milestone, but it’s also the first step in a long journey. This precinct will grow as our community grows. “It’s an investment for now and it’s an investment for the future of Fraser Coast sport, leisure and entertainment.”

Research shows impact of COVID-related waste IMAGES of a sea lion playing with a face mask in the Galapagos Islands and of a dead sea turtle found off Queensland with a mask in its gut will be entered into an archaeological record of the environmental impact of COVID-19. In a global collaboration, USC Fraser Coast’s marine biologist Dr Kathy Townsend, who leads ground-breaking international research into the impact of debris on marine life, has joined with archaeology and social policy academics to highlight the environmental pollution resulting from the pandemic response. In a journal paper released today in Antiquity, the authors suggest that applying an archaeological lens to COVID waste and giving it the status of archaeological material can add to understanding of the pandemic and inform policies that may mitigate its longerterm environmental impact. The study said that increased pollution caused by COVIDspecific, single-use plastic, mostly generated by measures aimed at stopping the spread of infection, would characterise this pandemic. “The logical leap is that during COVID lockdowns and travel restrictions there should be a reduction in marine debris showing up in our world oceans, but that isn’t the case,” Dr Townsend said.

“Marine debris has just been replaced with different kinds of rubbish – not the least of which are PPE (personal protective equipment) items such as discarded gloves and of course, single-use facemasks, which have quickly become the symbol of the coronavirus,” she said. In the UK alone, 748 million

that it was caused by airborne transmission, the debris found in the environment started to include single-use masks.” Two PhD candidates supervised by Dr Townsend also recorded graphic evidence of the impact of environmental pollution resulting from COVID waste. “We recently autopsied a dead green sea turtle that had washed up on a Sunshine Coast Beach and found a disposable face mask among more than 500 items of rubbish in its stomach,” she said. “Another PhD student researching plastics pollution in the Galapagos Islands also recorded a sea lion playing with a face mask.” Professor Schofield said in the report the COVID-19 pandemic was creating a viral archive, and COVID waste provided an archaeological record of history in the making. “Understanding human behaviours through the material culture it leaves behind is what archaeologists do, whether in prehistory, the medieval period, or yesterday,” he said. The study authors suggest that pollution created by the COVID-19 pandemic presents a crisis and that an archaeological perspective was uniquely placed to inform a policy-informed approach to tackling environmental pollution.

JUST one month after arriving on the Western Front in 1917, Private Leslie Thompson – the great uncle of Fraser Coast Libraries staff member Sam Thompson – was in the trenches, holding the front line with his unit when an enemy shell exploded. The World War I soldier was gravely wounded by shrapnel in the back and chest and, despite receiving treatment from the First Field Ambulance, he died of his injuries. Ms Thompson has shared

his story as an example of what people can find out if they participate in the libraries’ Research an ANZAC project. She said humans had a deep need to know their past and war service records, along with other historical information, gave people a chance to gain an insight into the lives of their family or community members. “Even being able to see their handwriting has a huge emotional impact,” Ms Thompson said.

“What better way to honour people in our family, or people from anywhere in Australia, who fought so we can be free.” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said library staff were creating an ANZAC Day Avenue of Honour which would be filled with posters featuring the information supplied by local adults and school children who researched an ANZAC. “We’ll include a QR code on the posters so people with smart phones can access the written history of the

ANZACs,” he said. “To help people research an ANZAC, Sam has produced an online guide which can be accessed through our Eventbrite page at frasercoastlibrarites.eventbrite. com. “Everyone has until 18 April to get their submissions, including a copyright-free photo, to us. “We’re encouraging as many people as possible to participate so we can remember those who served our country.”

Georgia Sinclair, Chelsea and Chloe Lhotka are keen to get their winning Bay Alley project off the ground BAY ALLEY takes home the Community Choice Award win at the recent Innovator Pitch Night held at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre. Chloe Lhotka and Georgia Sinclair put forward their idea to create a social hub to connect with other young people, Bay Alley. The project aims to develop a meeting place at the Neighbourhood Hive for young people to gather on a weekly basis. When Ms Lhotka, 23, moved to Hervey Bay for work seven months ago she said she struggled to make friends as there was a lack of places to meet other young people. “I tried Tinder, I went to Bunnings, Tourism Office and after four months finally made a friend,” Ms Lohkta said. “One of the biggest issues for young professionals on the Fraser Coast is that they have nowhere to meet up with friends besides pubs.” Ms Sinclair said she was surprised to discover young people have a higher prevalence of loneliness than any other age group and have a higher risk of depression. “We all know that mental illness is such a prevalent problem in today’s society so we want to do everything we can to combat that loneliness,” said Ms Sinclair. The $2000 prize money will

go towards kickstarting the venture with groovy furniture, lighting, paint and possibly a sound system. Ms Sinclair said a youth reference group would be meeting in the near future to ensure young people would be a part of the journey from the bottom up. The Judges top prize of $3000 was awarded to Intergenerational High Tea pitch by Alana Boan and Ellie May for their idea aimed to promote conversation between people of different ages. Ms Boan said the Fraser Coast Social Plan highlighted a need for our aging community to feel valued and have the opportunity to share their knowledge and insights with others. “Intergenerational High Tea’s are an opportunity for people to come together for cake and a chat and create potential life long relationships; a safe space where a family or young person could find their very own grandparent,” said Ms Boan. “Lots of people are separated from families and this has been exasperated by COVID. This means people are missing out on opportunities for intergenerational interactions. Our idea is to fill this gap and it will include cupcakes!” The project will utilise the Neighbourhood Centre’s

Wandering Teapot Café to host the events. Ms Boan said initial funding would be used to purchase decor that make a high tea unique, sourcing items of character from op shops, providing conversation starters. The funds would also be used to entice an experienced MC host for the first event to ensure a sell-out debut and facilitate discussion amongst the attendees. The High Tea would provide an opportunity for trainees who volunteer to plan an event; teaching valuable budgeting skills, making different foods, sourcing teas and treats. “I know from being a trainee here myself that when I was given the chance to assist in an event, it was an opportunity to express myself creatively and learn some skills that would be useful in my future career,” said Ms Boan. This idea would be sustainable as an ongoing project with a small fee charged to cover costs. Pitch Night is an opportunity for the community to present innovative ideas to improve the Fraser Coast. SEX! With the continuous rise of social media and creation of platforms such as ‘OnlyFans’ new legal problems are also being created. Many young people are not aware that the nude selfies that they take of themselves and publish on Snapchat or upload as a story on their Instagram can actually be considered production and distribution of child pornography. The children that then send the photos to others may also be found guilty of a range of child sex offences – irrespective of whether they are children themselves. These are serious Commonwealth offences and can ultimately be damaging not only for the subject but also for the people that receive and pass on the materials. OnlyFans is a social media platform in which people can create profiles under an alias and upload R18+ rated content for their subscribers or “fans” only to view. This may seem to some like a safe way to engage in the sharing of sexually explicit material, as there are no identifying details in the profile. However, that also means that subscribers may be unaware as to the actual age of the user.

When you sign up for an account with OnlyFans, you must agree that you are in fact 18+ years old. To combat potential access by underage individuals, in 2019 the platform introduced further verification processes for new users. This affords some protection for ‘fans’ as they should then have the genuine belief that the subject is 18+. Twitter states that it has a zero tolerance for such material, but Snapchat acknowledges that they do not scan the contents of private accounts. Neither platform is restricted to 18+. Humans inherently have an interest in sex and sexual content, so the simple advice of “don’t post, view or share naked photos online” is an easy answer but does not address the real underlying issues. Perhaps a more appropriate response may be to educate our children and broader community not only about the dangers of creating such content but also the potential consequences of distributing that material? Volunteers needed at cultural venues across the Coast

NEWSINBRIEF Public WiFi expanded on the Fraser Coast More locations will be added to the free WiFi service offered by the Fraser Coast Regional Council. At a recent meeting, Council agreed to a 12-month trail of free WiFi around the Maryborough City Hall, WetSide, SkateSide and the Seafront Oval. The free service will operate from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week and extended hours when events are on at the Seafront Oval or in the Maryborough CBD. Data will be limited to 500mb per day and the system will have basic content filtering to block adult content, and gambling. “Council will implement a trial so we can monitor demand and its popularity,” Cr Paul Truscott said. “We aim to increase tourism across the Fraser Coast in the wake of COVID-19 and there is no better way to increase our promotion than by tourists sending snaps and videos of their holidays here to family and friends. Free WiFi is also available at the Hervey Bay airport and Fraser Coast libraries.

three clubs. The most exciting news for all VIEW Clubs throughout Australia is the club’s first ever patron Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley, wife of the Governor General and as a teacher she is the perfect person to take on this important position and will be representing 300 VIEW Clubs across Australia. In October 2020 Mrs Hurley and His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley hosted a small reception for VIEW members and the Smith Family to celebrate VIEW’s Diamond Jubilee 60th Anniversary. The Hervey Bay VIEW Club was first formed in 1995 and last year would have celebrated its 25th anniversary had COVID not put a stop to the planned festivities. The main focus of VIEW Clubs is to support the Smith Family in their efforts to help financially disadvantaged Australian children and set them on a path for a fulfilling future and life.

Three new dog off-leash parks

Three new dog off-leash parks will be developed on the Fraser Coast. The off-leash areas will be built at Bernard Corser Park in Maryborough, Brendan Hansen Park in Granville, and Petersen Park in Craignish. Council will continue its investigation into developing a facility at Point Vernon.

Council provides 18 fenced and unfenced dog off-leash areas across the Fraser Coast. Council formally designated its off-leash area so they comply with the administrative requirements of Local Law 2. Stay out of storm detention basins

Residents have been warned not to swim or use aquatic equipment such as kayaks, stand up paddle boards and boats in storm water detention basins. The basins are a part of the Hervey Bay storm water management system. They are designed to reduce flooding during heavy rainfall events by storing water so it can be released slowly, especially at high tide. “While the basins may look like lakes, the water quality can be very poor due to weeds and algae which feeds off nutrients washed into the basins from lawns and animal droppings,” Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Denis Chapman said. Residents need to be aware that water running down gutters, roadways and drains ends up in the storm water system. “Lakes and ponds may

have concealed or submerged debris that poses a risk to swimmers and aquatic users, which is why we urge everyone to follow the rules and stay safe.”

Check In Qld app to be used at Council facilities

Visitors to Fraser Coast Regional Council’s public facilities will be required to sign in with the Queensland Government’s Check In Qld COVID-19 tracing app. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said Council was supporting the use of the Queensland Government’s Check In Qld app. “We all hope to see the end of COVID-19 soon, but in the meantime, health authorities need to be able to react quickly and immediately trace contacts in the event of an outbreak,” Cr Seymour said. “That’s why visitors will be required to sign in with the Check In Qld app when visiting any of Council’s public facilities, including libraries, customer service offices, aquatic centres, WetSide, Story Bank and the Bond Store.” A mobile device is needed to use the Check In Qld app and pre-registration is available for Apple and Android devices at: www.covid19.qld.gov.au/ check-in-qld The Check In Qld app will also be used throughout Queensland at restaurants and

retail shops. Cr Seymour said using Check In Qld was as simple as scanning a QR code on entry. SWIMMING: A local club has mastered its ability to produce world-class athletes. The Hervey Bay Masters Swimming Club (Humpbacks) have five swimmers named in the 2020 FINA World Top Ten Swimmers rankings. Each year FINA publishes the top 10 Masters’ times for each event in each age group across the world for both Short Course (SC) and Long Course (LC). With many masters, swimming meetings cancelled due to the pandemic; members were still able to have times recorded during the year. “We are absolutely delighted to have five members appearing in the list, including two number one rankings,”

Humpbacks president Paula Hewett said. There is no time to rest for the Humpbacks with club members training for upcoming events. “We have several new members across a wide age range and have a small number of swimmers heading to the State Championships on the Sunshine Coast in two weeks. Several members are also planning to attend the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games in Cairns at the end of May,” Hewett said.
