Kids design the future
THE HERVEY Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) was excited to partner with leading youth education and technology company, BOP Industries, to deliver three interactive April school holiday programs for local kids aged between eight and 16. The workshops took place at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Hive on Boat Harbour Drive, Pialba and were aimed at engaging Fraser Coast young people in digital technology, business and future thinking. HBNC Community Development Manager Cate Akaveka said the workshops enabled local children and youth to participate in handson activities that sparked imagination and encouraged thinking about big ideas through learning. Jacinta Nicholas-Adams, 11 years old, attended the three workshop and said thoroughly enjoyed them. “I loved doing all the science and environmental projects.” One of her ideas during the Designed Space workshop was using recycled plastic to make benches. “We could also make bins with a fun factor…When you put rubbish in them, they could make special sounds as though they are super deep.” She said the workshops were a great opportunity to have fun with others while doing something meaningful. The three workshops, Digital
Bop Industry facilitators with participants Juniper & Matilda Creators, Designed Spaces and Business Builders were delivered by Brisbane based BOP industries who are renowned for their digital and innovation education-based learning activities in schools and organisations around Australia including the World Science Festival, said Ms Akaveka. In the workshops, students had an opportunity to challenge themselves through new technologies, help design a city of the future, or plan their own business. This school holiday program was made possible thanks to funding from the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Community Event Grants scheme. Ensuring Fraser Coast youths could access the digital future was a huge focus for the Fraser Coast Regional Council, Mayor George Seymour said.
“By funding school holiday workshops such as these we can ensure that Fraser Coast youths will not be left behind,” he said. “We have seen from past workshops that local youths have many ideas for digital industries and with training have been able to capitalize on their ideas. “The Fraser Coast is ideally situated to be the base for a digital, computer-based industry sector which could create clean, green jobs.” In the Digital Creators workshop students explored a range of hands-on creative technologies as they worked to solve a series of challenges and see how these technologies can be used to innovate around the world. Topics included Robotics, 3D Printing, Augmented Reality and Holograms.

Mother’s love inspires Where the Magic Happens A MOTHER’S love knows no bounds books that would help explain what Cooper was about to endure. as the saying goes. This is the case for “I found nothing for children that would Amanda Christensen as she took the love help me explain to Cooper, in an easy and subsequent pain from the loss of her to read and illustrated way, what was six-year-old son Cooper Christensen in happening to him and the way in which we 2015 and turned it into a beautiful book to were going to fight it. inspire others. “To have had this book on the day of Together with award-winning authors diagnosis would have been an enormous Coral Vass and author-illustrator Nicky first step in having a very real and hard Johnston, the threesome created ‘Where the Magic Happens’; a heartwarming story about a young boy’s fight with brain cancer. Published last year through the Hand in Hand Fighting Brain Cancer charity, the story sensitively deals with the realities of brain cancer in a way that is accessible to younger readers. The story revolves around Cooper who is told he needs to be brave, put on a mask and fight a fierce brain tumour, during that time something wonderful and magical happens. Amanda Christensen and Carolyn Oldano It is described as an excellent resource for any child, parent, sibling, teacher or friend who has been impacted by brain cancer in some way. Ms Christensen said working on the book was not only healing for her personally but was a great accomplishment that honours Cooper while also providing a valuable resource to other families in a similar situation. “Until you have sat in a doctor’s office and told that your child has brain cancer, it is hard to relate to the importance of this book. “After Cooper was diagnosed, I googled everything on childhood brain cancer. I searched every bookstore, looking for
discussion about brain cancer and what his treatment journey was about to look like. “If this book can help just one family feel less alone and scared of the unknown, then we have done what we set out to achieve,” said Ms Christensen. “My hope for this book is that when a family is sitting in a doctor’s office like we were, and they are told their child has brain cancer, they will receive this book with other resources and information and know that they are not alone on their journey. “My wish is they will find comfort, understanding and hope within the words,
not just for the parent and child but for their family, friends and anyone who needs to understand what happens after being diagnosed with brain cancer.” She said it could be a difficult process to find the balance between communicating too much or too little information in a child-friendly way. “Having this book available to parents to take away with them to read to their child is an excellent tool for not only the parents and child but all family members.” Amanda Christensen is a nurse and director within Hand in Hand Fighting Brain Cancer Foundation. The charity is dedicated to helping families, carers and brain cancer warriors by providing personalised assistance. Founder Carolyn Oldano established the charity after losing her husband Michael to brain cancer in 2016. Her late husband’s wish to help children diagnosed with brain cancer is the driving force behind her passion and determination to have a children’s book written. “I thank the Christensen family, in particular Amanda. Your son would be so proud of his mummy for being his voice,” said Ms Oldano. Cooper Christensen was the inspiration behind the Fraser’s Coast annual Rally for a Cause and Dunga Derby fundraising event. To learn more about Cooper Christensen, take a stroll down the ‘Coopers Walk’ memorial in Torquay, along the Esplanade.

Boogie Bounce your way into fitness
Hervey Bay WOOD HEATING SPECIALIST
A UNIQUE and exciting fitness class has arrived in Hervey Bay and people are jumping for joy with this new workout. Boogie Bounce is a complete exercise program on a mini trampoline, with a safety T-Bar handle, choreographed to an eclectic mix of tracks from across the decades. The fun new concept was started in February by Cat Storen and offers six classes a week at the Pialba Memorial Hall on Main street as well as occasional pop up events outside or at private events. This low impact, full body workout appeals to a broad range of people including young people, seniors, mothers after giving birth, people with injuries. “We’d love to see more guys getting involved.” “As it is low impact, it is good for joints and people of
all ages and weight up to 160 kilograms.” “You can get great benefits from the low impact, but you can also do it at a higher impact and the calorie burn is massive,” said Ms Storen. “It improves cardiovascular and circulation; NASA have reported that it’s the best all round exercise you can do and it’s much easier on the joints than jogging.” “Any exercise is good exercise as far as I’m concerned.” Ms Storen said it was also very fun with an eclectic range of music over the 45 minute workout. Shallyn Erichsen attends and said she especially loved the trainer Mindy Baptist, “She’s amazing; she’s so vibrant and full of beans and energy; she puts a smile on your face.” “I love that it’s a bit different; you can make it as low or high impact as you want.”
“I’m thinking of taking my teenage daughter; I think she’d love it too,” said Ms Erichsen. The sessions included a warm-up; then a pulse raiser; some high intensity interval training on the trampolines followed by lying on a mat for a cool down or pulse lower. The aim isn’t to bounce high or perform gymnastic tricks, but to perform a series of small, controlled movements. “We go for a coffee afterwards at Pie and Pastry Paradise; it can be quite social.” Ms Storen said she had plans to offer kids classes and expand into Maryborough in the future. Classes cost $15 for casual sessions with discounts offered if you purchase multiple sessions at once. To find out more visit the Boogie Bounce Wide Bay Facebook page.

Homeless helpers need help
AFTER more than two years, Josie Street and Trish Hummerston continue to support the homeless people of Hervey Bay with life essentials and free breakfasts twice a week but are facing transport logistical issues. “We are trying our best to improve their quality of life and provide these people with food and other everyday essentials,” said Ms Street. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6am to 8am the pair provide a free breakfast in front of the Neighbourhood Centre and said they love the opportunity to give back to those in need and offer a kind ear. “During our breakfast sessions we have had the time to really connect and support these beautiful people, be an ear for them to vent to and a shoulder for them to lean on.” To fund the breakfasts and supply essential goods such as toiletries the passionate pair collect cans and bottles for recycling in exchange for cash. “Every week we collect bottles and cans from all over Hervey Bay, visiting businesses and scouring public spaces. “Thankfully we also have a generous handful of community members who donate their recyclables to our drop-off point at 25 Honiton Street, Torquay to help us boost our haul.” “The biggest struggle we are facing currently is the logistics of transporting our breakfast supplies, which include our trestle tables, eskies, boxes and
Josie Street and Trish Hummerston groceries.” With no available storage at the breakfast location, the women are left with the only option of packing and unpacking these supplies twice weekly, into their cars, “We find this to be the most difficult and exhausting part of the day.” This is where they are reaching out to the community for help. “If we had the funds to purchase or hire a van that we could permanently store our supplies in, it would drastically improve our operation while allowing us to take on more donations.” They said the van would ultimately improve their ability to distribute items like bags, tents, fitness mats and blankets to the people who need them most. “Support is crucial to our efforts of continuing to provide our breakfast moving forward.”
“We are finding that as the homelessness grows in Hervey Bay, so is our much needed support.” “Homelessness is very much a solvable problem with the right support, and homelessness is usually not a choice,” said Ms Street. “The idea that people who are homeless choose to live on the street perpetuates the false narrative that, unlike other people, they do not need or want stability.” Councillor David Lee stated, “The causes of homelessness are numerous and complex and Council will need to collaborate with the State Government and the nonfor-profits to address this challenging issue.” Donations can be made directly to J Street and P Hummerston in cash or can be made to their Go Fund Me page.

FRASER Coast residents and visitors had the opportunity to experience two new art exhibitions themed around native flowers and organic forms when the refurbished Hervey Bay Regional Gallery officially opened its doors recently. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour and Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari were given a sneak peek ahead of the opening of the refurbished gallery and the newly installed exhibitions ‘Jam Factory ICON Angela Valamanesh: About Being Here’ and ‘Wildflowering by Design (Wild/flower Women IV)’. Cr Seymour said the Fraser Coast had a colourful and vibrant cultural life, and a revitalised Hervey Bay Regional Gallery would help enhance and celebrate the region’s heritage and culture. “The Hervey Bay Regional Gallery has been reinvigorated as a destination gallery, featuring national touring exhibitions alongside our internally curated shows, focussing on hyper-local themes with a universal relevance for residents and visitors to our region,” he said. “As a result of the refurbishment, we now have the space to host large, significant exhibitions, a better storage area and an air conditioning and climate control system suitable to host

LIFT OFF: New $1 million program to get at-risk locals job-ready
The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre is proud and excited to introduce LIFT (Local Industry Futures Training) - a new program aimed at helping vulnerable people find their passion and purpose. At its heart, this new service, funded by the Federal Department of Social Services, is a job-readiness training program, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a chance for Hervey Bay residents to find their purpose and take meaningful steps towards the job or career of their dreams. Through a network of events, training and coaching opportunities, LIFT aims to break the cycle of long-term unemployment in our community. This will be achieved through:
what neighbourhood centres are here to do. “LIFT is all about taking a proactive approach to building positive and resilient communities,” Tanya said. “We know the Hinkler electorate region has some of the worst unemployment and youth
unemployment rates in the state. “There is no easy fix to this but something needs to be done to turn the tide. “Simply telling people to ‘get a job’ is not enough. Often, people who are caught in the cycle of long-term unemployment lack job-readiness skills that could be considered basic
or fundamental. “The training and employment coaches, youth assistance officers and other team members employed through LIFT will work with job-seekers to build these skills, helping them gain and maintain employment.” The program has already created
• Youth Assistance Program (YAP) for 16 to 18-year-olds • Industry Ready Training for 18 to 35-year-olds • Local Learning Network – workshops aimed at teaching new skills and encouraging community engagement HBNC CEO, Tanya Stevenson, said LIFT gets right to the heart of
eight new local jobs, with team leaders, training and employment coaches and youth assistance officers joining the HBNC team. LIFT is delivered through The Neighbourhood Hive, our learning and innovation hub. It is made possible by $1,118,616 of Federal Government funding. Next step in job-readiness plan LIFT adds to HBNC’s growing suite of job training services, including The Wandering Teapot social enterprise and Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) hospitality training. HBNC Operations Manager, Christian Berechree, said the organisation was taking a strategic approach to getting at-risk young jobseekers ready for work. “Hospitality is one of our region’s biggest employers, so it makes sense to train jobseekers in the skills they need to get them the jobs that are out there,” Christian said. “Using our established café, kitchen, catering and venue hire functions, we can provide a full hospitality training experience through our community hubs.”

Get to know the Greens candidate
THE GREENS’ new candidate for Hinkler is tradie Andrew McLean, who started and ran a mobile mechanic business for 10 years. McLean has three adult children and currently runs a non-profit sustainable and affordable housing organisation. He also has a background
as a Pastor, Chaplain, Youth Worker and Counsellor at the Lutheran Church, and was an ordained Lutheran minister. McLean’s key focus for the election is tackling corporate influence on politics, high costs of living, and climate change. Andrew McLean, “Corporations have donated
millions of dollars to Labor and the LNP over the past few years, and in return they get huge subsidies and special deals while ordinary people struggle to pay the bills. “The Greens refuse corporate donations, so we can actually fight for ordinary people. “We only need a 1.5% swing to win another senator this election, and we’ll fight to make billionaires and big corporations pay a little more tax to bring down costs of living for everyone. “We’ll bring dental and mental health into Medicare, make childcare free, build one million affordable homes over 20 years, and create hundreds of thousands of jobs tackling the climate crisis.” He also stated an intention to make lifelong public education and training free, again. “I am a ‘tradie’; I got my TAFE mechanics qualification when it was free; I also got a post-grad degree free.” “Wouldn’t you love to have someone represent you in Canberra that isn’t afraid of getting their hands dirty?” “Wouldn’t you love it if you could get free uni and TAFE qualifications like we used to?” McLean said he was very excited to do his bit in shifting politics away from big corporate interests and back to ordinary people.

SUMMER JADE Carla Bull wins the prestigious Stawell Gift FORMER Hervey Bay Surf Life Saver and Fraser Coast Anglican College school captain has written history by winning the Change Our Women Gift – 120 metre sprint race in Stawell. Sprinter Carla Bull pocketed $40,000 when she took home the win in the annual Stawell Gift over the Easter weekend. The 19-year-old, picked up a sore throat travelling to Victoria but managed to overcome it and win the Women’s Gift 13.77 seconds off a handicap of six metres. It was a tight victory just beating De Salis (13.79) and Gross (13.80). The Men’s Gift was won by Harrison Kerr. Bull grew up competing in surf lifesaving in Hervey Bay and this was her first trip to Stawell for Australia’s richest footrace that attracts
thousands of spectators from across the nation. After finishing school, the dedicated athlete moved to the Gold Coast two years ago to pursue her physiotherapy studies by studying a Bachelor of Exercise Science at Griffith University and train under noted sprint coach Brett Robinson. Here in Hervey Bay, Carla’s father David Bull said, “It was such a proud moment for her to win such a prestigious event.” Bull also won the 70-metre race, making it a double headed win, “That’s never been done before in the modern era of the current distances by anybody,” said Mr Bull. He said she had always been very determined and a hard worker, even when he was coaching her at Surf Life Saving.
She also had a running coach in Hervey Bay, Rick McDonald who helped her achieve her dreams. Mr Bull said she always knew what she wanted and was good at school. “As soon as she finished school she didn’t want to stop for a gap year, she just wanted to get started at uni.” He said that even though there may not be many bigrace opportunities in Hervey Bay it is still a great place to get started. “If you want something badly enough you have to head in that direction and chase it; it’s within reach.” “You have to go after what you want; nobody gives it to you these days.” Bull plans to put the money into her personal training business, predominantly for women said her father.

Voices of reason aiming to be heard across Hinkler
A PASSIONATE group of locals have banded together to advocate for the constituents of the Hinkler region by raising awareness of the importance of how much your vote counts in an election. Not affiliated with any political party, the diverse volunteer members of Voices of Hinkler (VoH) aim to reach as many residents of the Hinkler area as possible including Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Childers and everywhere in between - to find out what issues matter most. The group hopes to find candidates that will represent those values by providing a social media platform for the candidates to communicate their responses and views. Their Voices of Hinkler Facebook page had around 230 followers at time of writing with a separate Facebook group for the Volunteers of
Hinkler consisting of roughly 65 members. VoH goals are to strengthen active participation by the whole community in the process of democracy while striving for the highest standards of political representation for the Hinkler Electorate. President Lou Coles said, “It’s about having our elected representatives, particularly at the federal level, hear the voices of the community and represent the wishes of the community.” “We want them to act with the integrity that was intended by our democracy.” She said VoH could help the community be heard and assist the representatives connect and consult with the people that live in their electorate. “Sometimes people feel disengaged or disillusioned and see no point in speaking
up because no one is listening; we are trying to empower people to speak up and expect to be heard and expect our representatives to represent us, and keep them accountable.” “We want to encourage people to become more aware and more active in participation by having open, respectful and constructive conversations with each other about things that matter to them and affect their lives in their future.” “Hopefully we’ll get a better result at election time and have ongoing positive interaction with our representatives.” Founding VoH member Bianca Sands said, “We are not a political party, rather a community advocacy group. Ms Coles said the group aimed to be the voices of Hinkler and its constituents and hoped to be of service to the elected representatives. John Bunney, VoH Management Committee member expanded on VoH’s vision, “We don’t want to see mudslinging and attacking the opposition but actually talking about the issues that the people of the area face and what the policy response will be.” “We want as many people as possible to realise the importance of having a vote about whom to put in charge of the country.” “We’d like to get people to realise the gravity of their vote; take it seriously and not just vote like they always have but really look at the issues.”
“We’re about engaging with the community and educating about the issues,” said Mr Bunney. The group have been surveying the community on the matters that affect them. Some of the issues raised from their survey included transparency and integrity in politics; high levels of disadvantage in the local area; climate change action; funding, availability and access to healthcare services; housing
availability and affordability; funding to public education; and protection of the environment to name a few. Around the nation, there are approximately 30 Voices Of community engagement groups. They are all independent of each other but have an emphasis on transparency and inclusion. Some have endorsed independent candidates to run in federal elections. Voices of Hinkler has not endorsed
anyone for the upcoming election. Ms Coles said, contrary to what some people may think, they are not funded or have any political affiliations. She said VoH came from different walks of life including retired people; medical professionals, single mums, and scientists to name a few, all with a shared vision to make a difference in the community. UPCOMING fashion model Ashely Lindquist has been given a big break recently, being crowned Miss Photogenic Australia 2022. The 19-year-old grew up in Hervey Bay and moved to the Sunshine Coast three years ago. Ashley has been building her modelling career over the past year thanks to gentle encouragement and loving support from her mother and fellow industry mentors. Ashely’s mother, Cindy Lindquist is very proud of how far she has come, “She has always suffered anxiety and it has stopped her from doing things.” “She gets scared because her anxiety gets in the way, but she’s really beat it this time; I’m so proud of her.” “It started when she was approached by Studio Republic to do a photoshoot to start a modelling photography portfolio.” “She was excited but then at the last minute wanted to back out; but she did it and was so pleased with the photos, they looked amazing,” said Cindy. This gave Ashley the confidence to enrol in a course with Country Girl Management in how to catwalk. Her anxiety almost stopped her from going but she finally did it and loved it; she had always wanted to be a model said her mother.

“Like a lot of people, she had thought about doing things but not actually done them.” “After the course, we looked into entering the Miss Photogenic Australia and of course, as it got close she wanted to back out but she didn’t let her anxiety get the better of her and she went on to win the competition!” Ashely did her own makeup for the competition as she completed a Diploma in Beauty and works as a beautician. She also was awarded the Photographer’s Choice Award and several other awards and ribbons in addition to large prize packs. Since being crowned Miss Photogenic Australia, Ashley has been asked to walk for
Australian designer, Belle Le Chic at the prestigious New York Fashion Week in September as well as being featured in Katwalk Magazine. Winning the competition has opened doors of opportunity for her; she has been contacted by some of the judges of Miss Photogenic Australia, Hunter Talent Agency and Rising Model Magazine since the big win. The next big step in her career could see her feature in a modelling tv show, but this is under wraps for now said Cindy. “I’m so proud that her confidence is building, and her dreams are coming true.” Cindy hopes her daughter’s success will inspire others to pursue their dreams.

INNOVATIVE Hervey Bay specialised aluminium workboat builder BtB Marine announced they will be exhibiting their range of workboats at the Indo Pacific International Maritime Exposition at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour, Sydney on May 1012, with the theme “FUTURE DRIVEN WORKBOATS”. Located on the Queensland Government stand at the IndoPacific Expo, BtB Marine will be available to share information and briefings about their range of hi-tech workboats, including their multi award-winning 7.5m Ultra Long Range 750ULR, their 12m Landing Craft and Fast Passenger vessels and their new 675ULR design. BtB Marine has been leading the way in next generation cost-effective commercial workboat designs in the AsiaPacific region, embracing new diesel outboard technology to reduce emissions and improve efficiency and OPEX, and sees a bright future for smaller, efficient and safe vessels. Continuing BtB Marine’s
reputation for the early adoption of emerging technologies, they will also be demonstrating remotecontrolled autonomous operation of their Project INDIGO 750ULR Ultra Long Range vessel cruising around the waters of her homeport Hervey Bay LIVE from their expo stand. A lucky few will get the opportunity to pilot the vessel at 10.30 am each day of the exposition, live from the BtB Marine stand (weather permitting). Powered by a 200hp OXE Diesel outboard engine, this vessel has previously been utilised in the Australian Department of Defence’s HIPP program conducting hydrographic survey off the coast of Tasmania. David Field - Operations Director at iXBlue, contractor of Defence’s HIPP program said “iXblue have used INDIGO for two survey projects to complete the nearshore hydrographic components.” “INDIGO is a sturdy platform capable of collecting
good quality data in marginal sea states.” BtB Marine’s General Manager Chris Hough explained, “Our 750ULR vessel with the OXE Diesel Outboard is a boat that can fulfill many roles like border patrol, port security, hydrographic survey, crew transfer and much more cost-effectively, both with initial cost and ongoing operating costs.” In other news, BtB Marine is about to invest significantly in an innovative new hi-tech manufacturing facility which will streamline operations and allow their production capacity to more than double; great news for the Wide Bay region. BtB Marine’s innovation skills and boat building capability were recognised by the Australian Marine industry in 2020, with the company winning two major national marine industry awards; ‘The Australian Marine Industry Award for Innovation’ and also taking out the AusMarine award for the ‘Best MultiPurpose Workboat’.

Do elections impact theproperty market?
THE SHORT answer is yes, according to Fraser Coast Property Industry Association (FCPIA) President Glen Winney. “During election campaigns, the market gradually quietens down due to the uncertainty of an outcome; consequently, people become more wary of their buying,” said Mr Winney. “This time around, I believe the influence will be a little different. The abnormal pace of the market and the strong indicators over the last year, combined with the demand on construction and new land, will safeguard a potential fallout.” Mr Winney believed long term governments significantly affect the property market. “Strong economies are vital for the industry to flourish and are heavily influenced by the government in charge.” He said factors such as low unemployment rates, low-interest rates, and steady inflation, influence how the property market behaves. Other factors to be conscious of in an election are policies that the major parties announce. “Incentives such as first homeowner grants, negative gearing policies, or tax changes encourage property stimulation.” “Currently in the market, there is the Home Guarantee Scheme; The Regional

President FCPIA Glen Winney Home Guarantee; and the two-billion-dollar low-cost financing, have inevitably all assisted in accelerating the current market.” Mr Winey stressed the importance of housing affordability and further supply of low-cost housing options for the future of our nation. “It is important that the younger generation are given opportunities to enter into homeownership, so incentives such as cheaper loans, grants, and stamp duty concessions will play a large part.” When heading to the election polls this year, Mr Winney encouraged voters to take note of which party is presenting the best financial policies for
the economy and in particular what housing incentives will be on offer from either party. He said it was important to consider which party would provide the best for our region, “Which candidates are are offering infrastructure for long term growth in our area?” “If they promise infrastructure how will they do it and are they going to be in government to deliver?” “What are both major parties actually going to do for the region?” “We’ve had money in through the Hinkler Deal in recent times but what money is getting promised to make sure our region prospers in the coming years?”

CREATING CONVERSATION TO SAVE LIVES
A community based project has recently been completed for all of us to see. The LIVIN billboard on Hervey Bay Maryborough Road, Urraween has recently been updated to promote positive mental health and in particular create conversation. Fraser Coast businessman and LIVIN facilitator Guy Meredith said, “it’s wonderful to see such community support. Several local businesses all contributed toward the important community message.” Mr Meredith told the Hervey Bay Advertiser. “It’s just so important to promote, discuss and raise awareness whenever we can. Whilst there is so many wonderful organisations and services to assist all of us with mental ill health, suicide awareness, depression, anxiety and increasing social issues; responsibility must start within the community and this project has been indicative of that”. Guy said. LIVIN.org is a non for profit charity established to create conversation around mental health issues and “BREAK THE STIGMA” surrounding mental ill health, for far too long Australians have suffered in silence. While he said, “these issues can be vast and complex”; it’s about being conscious that something may not be ok, and recognising the signs.
With today’s social pressures and influences it’s everybody’s responsibility to support each other. Yes we all have our own issues but sometimes our own issues are insignificant in comparison to others that may be close to you. They may be experiencing financial difficulties, alcohol and/ or substance abuse, relationship breakdowns, grief, a lack of direction or simply the feeling of not being good enough. Since becoming a facilitator for LIVIN after the loss of his beloved nephew Perry Meredith to suicide in 2016; Guy become aware of the profound statistics surrounding mental ill health in Australia. “The facts are incredibly overwhelming”,
> Almost 50% of Australians will experience mental illness over the course of their lifetime. > Approximately 55% of people with mental illness do not access treatment. > Suicide is the leading cause of death amongst all Australians age 15-44.

> Almost 9 people in Australia take their own life every single day.

Guy said. They say death by suicide affects 115 people. The loss of Perry’s life created a ripple effect which impacted thousands of people, far beyond anything we had ever experienced as a family. “3000 people attended Perry’s funeral; yet he died alone. Anyone of those people would have helped Pez if he had just reached out!” Guy said. We will never find a logical answer to such an irrational decision and why Pez left us? However it is our families hope that such initiatives prevent others from suffering the same loss and heartache. “The LIVIN sign is there to motivate the Fraser Coast community to SPEAK UP - particularly those members who are struggling”, Guy said. “We need to break the Stigma surrounding Mental Illness and encourage those who are struggling to seek help”. Guy is available to present the LIVINWell mental health awareness and stigma reduction program to any schools, clubs or local business who wish to facilitate this discussion and create awareness.
The LIVINWell program has been written by professional Psychologists along with a recent “Check Mate” course to be specifically implemented for workplace awareness and discussion. LIVINWell has been presented to over 100,000 school students nationally. Guy recently travelled to Gladstone for an intense 2 day workshop which included 5 presentations, as well as schools in Bundaberg and Miriam Vale. Whilst Guy has presented the LIVINWell Programme to most schools on the Fraser Coast, “it needs to become an annual visit; rather than just a one off event” he said. “Unfortunately the statistics are not getting any better and we need to keep speaking to our children about their psychological well being” Guy said. These programs can be arranged by reaching out to head office at Livin.org or contacting Guy directly at Ray White Maryborough or any of the contributing businesses below.

Sport equipment grants Local sport and recreation groups will be able to buy new or improved equipment thanks to the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Sport and Recreation Equipment Grants program. “The grants will help groups not able to fundraise due to COVID-19 or who were affected by the recent floods,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. “Sport and active recreation groups can apply for grants up to $500 to purchase equipment which in turn improves their capacity to stage events and improves the accessibility of sport and recreation groups to all residents. “The funds can be used to buy items such as playing shirts, balls, nets, training equipment and other small pieces of equipment.” Applications for Round 2 2021/22 will be assessed each week and the round will close as soon as the available funds have been expended, or 3pm on the May 20 (whichever comes first). “The grants help Council ensure that the Fraser Coast has a diverse and strong sporting community,” Cr Seymour said. With the upcoming federal election, the Advertiser asked the Hinkler candidates where they stood on the issues outlined below to help voters be more informed on voting day. JACKDEMPSEY

Youth unemployment
Youth unemployment in Hinkler has been unacceptably high for more than 20 years — one of the highest in Australia. There needs to be a greater focus on providing young people with life skills and experience to give them confidence and make them job ready. Success has been achieved with programs that match secondary school students with employers for sustained work experience and mentoring. We also need to provide more funded training positions and higher education places in Hervey Bay, especially in courses where there are skills shortages. I also support building resilience in young people by introducing them to volunteering opportunities. Climate change Australia needs to reduce emissions and achieve net zero by 2050, with bold

interim targets for 2030 and 2040. In Hinkler, I’ll be a local champion for renewables and innovation to introduce a circular economy. We have huge opportunities to reuse agricultural waste and create bio-energy. We’re already Australian leaders in solar, and hydrogen has great potential as a clean energy source. I’ll advocate for Fraser Coast Council to receive government support for its Coastal Futures Strategy, which has practical measures to address climate change impacts such as rising sea levels, higher king tides and more extreme storm events.
Cashless Debit Card I’m opposed to the
cashless debit card continuing. People are being discriminated against and segregated from mainstream society based on their age, location and welfare status. Many can't get rental accommodation in a tight market where more than 70 people apply for every vacancy, forcing them to leave the area. It's like a form of social cleansing and it's un-Australian. I support the investment that’s occurred in social support services, but this should be happening regardless and there should be more of it.
Reduce carbon emissions and impacts of climate change on our precious rural and coastal areas and wetlands. Reinstate world class public health and education. Ensure affordable, secure housing and accommodation for all.

ANDREWMCLEAN Youth unemployment
The first step to giving young people more pathways towards employment is free, quality public education - fully funding state schools and fixing school infrastructure in the regions, scrapping HECS debt and bringing back free uni and TAFE. The Greens also have a plan to end the insecure work crisis, which is hitting young people particularly hard, and give casual and contract workers better protections and entitlements. Our plans to tax billionaires and big corporations to fund a massive investment in public services would create thousands of new jobs in healthcare, education, public housing construction, renewable energy, local manufacturing and more.
Climate change The last time the Greens shared power in parliament, we secured world leading climate legislation. This time, we’ll push the next government to stop approving new coal and gas projects, invest $40 billion to reach 100% publicly owned renewables by 2030 and expand green manufacturing and mineral processing in Queensland. We’d also provide workers with a job-for-job guarantee, wage stability for 10 years, and free retraining to transition away from coal. We are the only party who refuse donations from the fossil fuel industry, so we’re the only ones you can actually trust on climate. Cashless Debit Card The Greens are the only party to consistently oppose the Cashless Debit Card, and have successfully prevented the trial from being made permanent. We are pushing to scrap this unfair income

ONE NATION
Youth unemployment Youth unemployment is a problem in many regional communities and trying to keep the youth in regional centres with gainful employment rather than lose them to the cities for more opportunities. That’s why I support our apprenticeship policy, our policy in 2018 was adopted by The Morrison Coalition government a $60 million regional apprenticeship policy. If we can keep our youth learning, earning and having a family our regional centres grow. Climate change Flood proofing our arterial
roads should be a priority as we have recently seen, cutting our regional network prevented road and rail transport. I would fight to flood proof the Bruce Highway, widen the Bruce Highway and work to ensure that even in extreme weather events the commercial road and rail food transport traffic can always get through.
Cashless Debit Card I support the card for
the specific purpose it was introduced for, and that was for 18- to 35-year-old, long term unemployed. I don’t support it for any other purpose.

UAP
Youth unemployment The United Australia Party (UAP) has a strong focus on the future of Australia and we know that our youth are our future! We will support our youth to find satisfying employment opportunities in the following ways:• Support mental health – My party recognises that the health of our people is of paramount importance. As a Hinkler local I have been deeply concerned about the rise in mental health challenges in our region and will work collaboratively with all stakeholders to be proactive in turning around this disturbing trend. The UAP’s policy of boosting investment in hospitals, and reducing bureaucratic waste, will help our region to offer better health services for our youth. • Boost education - We need to provide more funding for education in Australia. A free nation can rise no higher than the standard of excellence set in the schools, colleges and TAFE’s. It’s time to invest in ourselves and the next generation. The UAP will inject an extra $20 billion into the education system in our first three years in Government. UAP believes we must educate our children as our most valuable resource, we must make it possible for those with talent to go to university, but we must also ensure those who are educated can find a job after graduating from university. That’s why our ability to compete internationally and to expand our exports is so important.
HINKLERHOPEFULS
WHERE DO THE HINKLER CANDIDATES STAND ON THE ISSUES?
• Remove all HECS fees - Thanks to our innovative policy to pay back the national debt (through a tax excise on iron ore exports; see here for details www.unitedaustraliaparty.org.au/) the UAP will forgive and remove all HECS fees to encourage Australians to pursue further education. We will remove the burden of HECS fees and give young Australians hope and encouragement. • Support businesses to create jobs - Strong economic policies which pay down the Trillion Dollar national debt will keep inflation manageable and support the business community to grow, which in turn creates more jobs and opportunities. Additionally, the UAP will stop the provisional tax being paid in advance by Australian businesses, before profits have been made. The United Australia Party will stop this unfair tax, to allow up to an extra ninety billion dollars to circulate in our economy and provide jobs, jobs & more jobs for Australians. • Greater support for regional economies - My party’s policy supporting regional areas through a 20% tax concession will help attract new industries to regional areas, which will in turn create more jobs. In addition, the UAP is committed to supporting our existing industries in the Hinkler electorate, such as agriculture and tourism, which will in turn help sustain jobs and create new jobs. • Return more tax dollars to regions - The United Australia Party believes 25 % of the wealth generated from regions in Australia must be returned to that region, so the wealth can be reinvested in the region that generated it. This policy will further support regional investment and job creation. With a particular focus on the country’s regional areas to increase jobs, the party intend on bringing home to Australia - $1 trillion of pension funds to invest in Australia, for Australians. This will create more jobs and see our country and the people prosper.
Climate change First and foremost, Australia cannot take positive action on climate change with a Trillion Dollar Debt burden threatening to bankrupt our nation. Responsible fiscal management is required urgently to allow Australians to keep their homes and afford their everyday costs of living. A country with a strong economy and responsible debt levels, is far better positioned to take real and effective action on climate issues. As a proud Australian who loves my country and loves this region, I support positive actions to protect our environment for future generations. I want my young son to inherit a planet that has a positive future. However, I cannot support Net Zero policies that put the jobs of everyday Australians at risk. As a Member of Parliament, I will be asking for sensible government policies that protect jobs AND the environment. You may have seen the UAP signs saying ‘Net Zero = no jobs’; I stand by that position, but as your voice in Canberra I will be a passionate advocate for innovative solutions that help Australia achieve a low carbon future without jeopardising the jobs of the people I have been sent to Canberra to represent or the sectors in our region which underpin our local and national economy. Cashless Debit Card The United Australia Party will remove
the cashless debit card unless it is deemed by a social worker that it remains beneficial for someone to continue using the CDC service. Additionally, those who want to remain on the card should have the option to continue using the CDC service. I believe that many of the government’s blanket policies of onesize-fits-all approach rarely works. The CDC is a clear example of a situation where I believe a more nuanced approach is needed. Personally, I’m strongly focused on getting to the root causes of disadvantage in our community. From what I have learnt about the Cashless Debit Card in the last few months, it is another example of a top-down government approach that does little to address the real causes of disadvantage in our community. There have been reports of some community members finding the CDC is of benefit to their situation. In those cases, the card
has achieved its original purpose of protecting the vulnerable and ensuring that the core needs of children are being met. From my limited observation, it simply doesn’t appear to tackle the root cause of generational welfare concerns in our community which flags to me that there is a desperate need for dedicated healthcare and education funding and perhaps early intervention programs that would better address the concerns of generational welfare. The United Australia Party has clear principles focused on strengthening our healthcare and educational system in order to support all Australians and for Aussies to live in a truly democratic country. The feedback I’ve received from Hinkler residents who are currently on the CDC trial is that they are not happy with it. I’ve listened to that feedback and our party has taken a clear position that those people should be removed from the card, unless it is deemed necessary by a social worker that they remain on the card for the welfare of their family. The United Australia Party’s announcement on the Cashless Debit Card plus the national policies of a $180 per fortnight increase to the aged pension and a 3% cap on interest rates for 5 years clearly demonstrates that Kristie Nash and the UAP are standing up for the people of Hinkler and putting forward policy positions with the greatest benefits for everyday people.
KEITHPITT
because we know it’s time to take real climate action. We are committed to net zero by 2050, and reducing emissions. Anthony Albanese and Labor’s Powering Australia Plan will create jobs, cut power bills and reduce emissions by boosting renewable energy.
Cashless Debit Card Labor will scrap the privatised Cashless Debit Card. We make no apologies for highlighting this issue as both Scott Morrison and Anne Ruston as Social Services Minister have talked about applying the cashless welfare card more broadly – and have called the pension “welfare”.

Youth unemployment The region is making positive progress with youth unemployment, and I expect to see it continue to fall. There are a range of programs to help young people gain employment including the Transition to Work program and the recently announced $4.7 million investment in five local organisations in the Hinkler electorate to help Cashless Debit Card participants get into the workforce. I know there are many businesses in Hervey Bay who are looking for staff and having difficulty recruiting staff, but for anyone looking for work, my advice is to take the job in front of you. If you are waiting for the perfect job, you could be waiting a long time.

Climate change Australia’s emissions are at their lowest levels since records began in 1990. Since 2005, Australia has reduced our emissions faster than Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the USA. Any plan to reduce emissions should not create additional costs for regional people or take away their jobs and opportunities.

Youth unemployment Labor will deliver secure, well-paid jobs, by investing in the skills Australia needs to drive future economic growth. Labor’s Future Made in Australia Skills Plan will close this gap and boost these critical workforces by providing 465,000 Free TAFE places, including 45,000 new TAFE places. It will also deliver up to 20,000 new university places. This will help fix areas of skills shortages and fill future skills needs by training Australians in jobs including engineering, nursing, tech, and teaching. Wage theft disproportionately impacts young people, and that’s why an Albanese Labor Government will legislate to criminalise wage theft.

Tradies across Australia are being lured to paradise with a new campaign that will bolster the state’s skilled trade labour force and keep Queensland’s economy growing. Up to $1,750 will be paid to the first 1,000 tradespeople who move to Queensland and work for eight weeks’ rebuilding communities impacted by the recent south east Queensland flood. The Fraser Coast is one of the local government areas included in the program. Launching the campaign, Acting Premier Steven Miles said, “The devastating flooding events have put skilled tradespeople in high demand and we need more boots on the ground to help communities get back on their feet as soon as possible. “While they are here, they can get a taste of what it’s like to work, live and play in our great state… and maybe even stay forever and trade up to paradise. Tradespeople who relocate to Queensland and undertake eight weeks’ reconstruction work in one of the 19 eligible local government areas will be rewarded with an incentive and travel payment of up to $1,750. Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer said the Tradies in Paradise campaign is recruiting carpenters, electricians, plasterers, roof tilers and plumbers, tilers, painters and decorators, plumbers, cabinetmakers, planners, architects or building designers, surveyors, building-related engineers, building certifiers, refrigeration and airconditioning mechanics and gas fitters. “The Tradies in Paradise campaign is targeting tradies across Australia, except for New South Wales, who like Queensland is also tackling a significant reconstruction effort,” Ms Farmer said. “As part of the campaign, tradies will also have
access to a wide variety of information on areas such as sourcing accommodation and employment, licensing requirements and mutual recognition application and safety inductions.” Minister Farmer said the Tradies in Paradise scheme was on top of the Palaszczuk Government’s annual $1 billion investment in training and skills, supporting Queenslanders to undertake training for jobs in demand. “As we head towards the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and our renewable energy boom, the longer-term opportunities for skilled tradespeople in Queensland are endless,” Minister Farmer said. “This investment is providing skilled workers for the future but following the recent floods we need more qualified tradespeople now.” Applications for the relocation incentive are open until 30 November 2022 or until the 1,000 places have been filled, whichever is the earlier. Visit www.qld.gov.au/ TradiesinParadise for more information.
Building better roads and crossings on the Fraser Coast
More than $3m in Council road projects are getting underway on the Fraser Coast. Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Denis Chapman said the five projects in Hervey Bay and Maryborough would improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. “Council is responsible for about 2,700 kilometres of roads and footpaths throughout the region, and about a third of our capital works budget is allocated to maintaining and improving roads, footpaths, bridges and drainage,” he said. “This latest round of projects involves upgrading pedestrian crossings, installing a roundabout,
Crank-IT Channel Awnings
building a new footpath, and replacing kerb and channel.” In Hervey Bay, a concrete raised priority crossing will be built in Medical Place (adjacent to the Nissen Street roundabout) and a pedestrian refuge crossing will be installed in Nissen Street near the Nissen Street and Bayswater Drive intersection. The works will improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians moving through the medical precinct, Cr Chapman said. The $465,837 project, which has been awarded to Grand Civil, will be staged starting in Medical Place, and then moving to Nissen Street. It is anticipated that with both projects due to be completed by late June, weather permitting. The two projects are funded through the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants program. To lessen the impact of the work on traffic, some of the work will be undertaken at night. “The projects are part of Council commitment to deliver resilient regional infrastructure that supports and caters for our current population and future growth,” Cr Chapman said. “It’s all part of our plan to build better communities together on the Fraser Coast.”

Two-up for Taylor over school holidays WHILE most kids were having a break from school over the recent school holidays, Hervey Bay’s Owen Taylor was hard at work winning two national championships. The Maryborough State High School student was part of the undefeated Queensland under 15 boys’ hockey and under 14 softball teams that won national championships. The talented sportsperson spent the first week of holidays in Newcastle, New South
Wales, with his hockey team, including several Fraser Coast players. They won the gold medal before he travelled to Canberra to repeat a similar story with his softball team. When quizzed about what it felt like to win two national championships in two weeks, the unassuming Taylor smiled and said that it felt pretty good. “It is a pleasure and an honour to represent your state, but winning titles is very special,” Taylor said.
His family travelled to watch his tournament success over the break. “It was a big couple of weeks, but it was all worth it. To win two national championships in two weeks is quite an achievement,” mum Carrie Taylor said. The hockey fullback and softball catcher or third baseman is happy to continue playing both sports for as long as possible; however, he has already chosen the sport he will
choose when he needs to. “I enjoy both, but it will be hockey. My whole family plays, and I enjoy it,” he said. He believes the family environment draws him to the sport on and off the field.
Taylor has already set goals with his first to make the Australian under 19 hockey squad before hopefully representing the Kookaburras at the Olympics and World Championships.
For now, he will focus on playing hockey locally for the Hervey Bay Brothers men’s team. “We are looking pretty good at the moment and sitting near the top of the table.”
