Giving, an Xmas tradition AS the sun sets and the stars begin to glisten, the magical sound of Christmas will ring out at Seafront Oval on Saturday, 11 December from 6pm-8pm. The Hervey Bay RSL Carols by Candlelight is set to bring about a little bit of sparkle that’s desperately needed after a tumultuous year. The popular free event was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. The event will feature both traditional and fun festive songs being performed by a combined community carols band. There will be food vans, Glo Sticks for sale, a visit from Santa and a fireworks display to conclude the event. Families are encouraged to bring along a chair or picnic rug. Guests can bring along a picnic dinner if they choose. This is an alcohol and drugfree event. The Hervey Bay RSL Club didn’t hesitate to get on board as a major sponsor with a $10,000 community grant, plus a huge amount of in-kind support including staff hours. CEO Jason Lynch said the carols is a much-loved tradition in Hervey Bay that attracts about a 7000-strong crowd each year. It’s a time of giving, and that’s what the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program is all about. “It’s been a tough year for everyone and staging the carols is a great way for families to

CEO Jason Lynch with volunteers Julie Terry and Luke Strochnetter come together and enjoy the spirit of the season,” Jason said. Along with about 50 volunteers, Julie Terry from the Hervey Bay Christian Ministers' Association and event planner, Luke Strochnetter from 360 Degrees Marketing, are two key players bringing the carols to life. The two say they volunteer to simply offer the community a chance to come together and focus on the wonder, hope and joy of Christmas. Luke said this year’s theme, Love in Action, will also celebrate the behind-the-scenes work of emergency services and front-line staff over the past two years. Guests are also encouraged to bring a gold coin to donate to families in need, which will then be donated to We Care 2 and the Salvation Army.

Tender Juicy T-Bones

Also adding to the support of the Christian Ministers Association’s charitable work, the RSL will once again set up a Christmas Giving Tree in the club foyer. Hundreds of gifts and hundreds of dollars in donations were collected last year by the Combined Churches and distributed to needy Fraser Coast residents by local relief agencies, church-based charities and school aged care and prison chaplains. Patrons can purchase a $5, $10, $20 or $50 bauble, with the funds going directly to the local charities. All gifts must be new and left unwrapped or placed in a gift bag with the age group and gender marked on the tag. Gifts can be placed under the RSL Giving Tree until Monday, 20 December.

Christmas Goods Wheel spins again in the Bay THE THRILL of the spin for the Christmas Goods Wheel returns to Hervey Bay this year from Saturday 18 December to 8 January in the Scarness Park (opposite the Beach House Hotel), with a few adjustments. The annual event, run by the Hervey Bay Local Ambulance Committee (LAC), was cancelled last year due to COVID. Organiser Jo-Anne Farrell said they hoped this year’s return would be bigger and better. They have made some changes to make it COVID friendly this year, “The main thing we want everyone to know is we won’t be putting out our wooden chairs; everyone needs to bring their own chairs or picnic blankets to sit on.” Everything else that residents and visitors love about the event will continue. Tickets for each spin cost 50 cents. The event runs nightly (except Christmas) from 7pm with about 50 spins a night. Ms Farrell said the process to buy the tickets will be slightly different too; people need to queue instead of huddle around the ticket sellers. There will be approximately 1000 prizes on display to choose from for the winning ticket holders. Prizes include toys, kitchen and homewares, small electrical items, camping gear, gardening equipment, fishing and auto, manchester, skateboards, scooters, pool toys and more. Losing tickets go in the barrel to win the Major Prize of a

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANISATION Hooded Gas BBQ, drawn on the last night. The prizes are all locally sourced and purchased throughout the year by LAC. Ms Farrell, who has volunteered at the wheel for more than 20 years, said she loved sourcing the prizes and thinking of the winner’s faces lighting up. “It’s an amazing feeling to know the money is going to a good cause too.” The money raised goes towards purchasing new life-saving equipment for the ambulance stations. “This year we've just purchased a lift chair that will help paramedics lift people up off the floor. We’ve also purchased training mannequins for the paramedics to use for practice.” LAC committee member Merryn Napier said since the Urraween station opened earlier this year, they need to

buy equipment for that station and the Torquay one. The funds raised from previous years had seen the service provided with a defibrillator, training mannequins, computers and multi-purpose tools. Ms Farrell said the volunteerrun event would not be possible without the help of the local community groups who come each evening to sell tickets. “Each evening a different service club or group comes down and helps us out. We wouldn't be able to run the wheel without their help.” Groups involved include Rotary Clubs of Hervey Bay City and Hervey Bay Sunrise, Fraser Lions, View Club, Marine Rescue, Hervey Bay Lions, Zonta, Hervey Bay Councillors and Bendigo Bank. The Goods Wheel has been spinning for over 60 years, making it the longest-running

LAC members Greg Mengel, Jo-Anne Farrell, Merryn Napier and president Ian Farrell enjoy sharing the joy of spinning and winning, all for a good cause.

WORK has started on a major new east-west road connection through Hervey Bay. Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Denis Chapman said the Boundary Road extension would provide alternative and improved access to the Hervey Bay city centre, major shopping centres, tourist destinations and the medical precinct. “This massive road project – being delivered by local civil construction company SGQ – will provide a significant boost to the local economy, generating employment for 89 people over the next 18 months,” he said. “With the region’s population forecast to reach 150,000 within 20 years, an improved east-west connection will cater for growth, reduce traffic congestion and take pressure off Boat Harbour Drive, Hervey Bay’s primary east-west link.” Cr Chapman said the longawaited project would fill in the missing link between Urraween Road and Boundary Road with

a 1.9-kilometre, four-lane dual carriage way. “The Boundary Road extension has been planned since the 1980s, with most of the road reserve for the project dedicated in the 1990s, so it’s fantastic it’s now able to go ahead,” he said. “While a lot of the work will occur on the road reserve, there will be impacts on existing roads at various stages over the next 18 months and I thank everyone in advance for their patience during the construction period.” The project includes new traffic lights at the intersections at Grevillea Street and Denmans Camp Road. Concrete shared pathways will be provided on both sides of Boundary Road with on-road cycle lanes also being included. The initial works include the excavation of the drainage area and the removal of vegetation between Grevillea Street and Denmans Camp Road. The work area will be fenced off to prevent pedestrian access through the construction zone, but no road closures are

planned during these initial works. From February 2022, there may be road closures and detours in the Denmans Camp Road section of the project, while Grevillea Street and Richard Charles Drive are likely to be impacted from mid-2022. The total project cost is estimated to be approximately $26.5 million. The Australian Government is contributing $7.7 million to the project as part of the Hinkler Regional Deal. The Queensland Government is contributing $3.1 million through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme, and Fraser Coast Regional Council is contributing $15.7 million. Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said,“This commitment ensures Hervey Bay’s roads keep pace with our city’s growth.” The Boundary Road extension is likely to be completed in mid-2023, weather permitting.

Saving lives through virtual reality

HBNC CEO Tanya Stevenson, UQ Rural Clinical School Hervey Bay Director Dr Rudi Prasad and Youth Mentoring Coordinator Rowena Allen try out the new Youth First Aid simulation. HERVEY Bay Neighbourhood Centre are proud to launch the all new Youth First Aid program - teaching lifesaving skills through the new technology of virtual reality. The aim of the project, developed in partnership with the University of Queensland Rural Clinical School Hervey Bay (and funded by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation), is to equip young people with the knowledge to deal with relevant first aid situations they could face. The VR program takes young people through four immersive scenarios, simulating them or their peers experiencing alcohol poisoning, the effects of drug use, violence and other risktaking behaviours. Rowena Allen, Youth Mentoring Coordinator for the Hervey Bay

Neighbourhood Centre, said tailoring the program to young people could save lives. "The feedback from young people is they don't just want to know about basic first aid they want to know how to deal with situations they might find themselves in where they don't always know what to do," Rowena said. "If they happen to find themselves in certain dangerous situations or choose to engage in risky behaviours, we would much prefer they are prepared for the risks and consequences and that's what this project is all about." Rowena said the virtual reality delivery set the project apart from other similar courses. "The headsets make the program more accessible and sustainable as it can be rolled out well beyond the Fraser Coast," she said.

"It's also a way of making what can be quite confronting content more engaging and even fun." The Youth First Aid project was originally presented at our Community Ideas Pitch Night, held in February. It has since evolved to incorporate the virtual reality component, thanks to the involvement of UQ's innovative and future-thinking team. "Thank you to UQ student doctors, Justin Ayres and Jayden Barker, as well as Rural Clinical School director, Dr Rudi Prasad and Chris Camilleri from UQ IT for helping get this idea off the ground," Rowena said. The virtual reality delivery will be launched at an upcoming session at The Neighbourhood Hive. Details to be advised.

More FAD-tastic fishing

FAD deployment. Photo credit: Department of Agriculture and Fisheries FISHERIES Queensland has installed new fish attracting devices (FADs) off the Fraser Coast in a program to support sustainable fishing and local jobs. Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said the latest phase of the FADs program includes three new FADs to create new off-shore recreational fishing spots off the Fraser Coast. “Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast are already known for world-class recreational fishing, and installation of these devices will add even more to that reputation,” Mr Tantari said. “Recreational fishing contributes more than $35m in direct and indirect economic activity in the Wide Bay Burnett region, supporting jobs in our local economy. “Spending by recreational

fishers means more support for charter, equipment and bait businesses as well as local accommodation providers, and that means local jobs. “Creating new fishing experiences with FADs make sense because it will give recreational fishers even more reason to visit and stay in our region.” “Fish attracting devices have been used extensively around the world for thousands of years and are designed to aggregate fish, particularly pelagic species, to make them easier to catch,” he said. “By improving the fishing experience, the FADs encourage recreational fishers to target different species which reduces the fishing pressure on overfished stocks. “The FADs initiative is helping to strengthen Queensland’s world-class

recreational fishing experience while giving species like snapper and pearl perch an opportunity to rebuild.” Three FADs have been installed off the Fraser Coast. One is approximately 31 nautical miles off Urangan, one is approximately eight nautical miles from Sandy Cape and another is approximately 11 nautical miles from Waddy Point. As part of the Queensland FADs program, 37 devices had previously been deployed off South East Queensland and four off Weipa. A comprehensive monitoring program is underway to gauge the success of the Queensland FADs program. For GPS locations of Queensland’s FADs, visit www. daf.qld.gov.au.

Magic in the making at Z-PAC MARK your calendar for 2022 as an exciting line-up of live entertainment has been set for the Bay’s Z-PAC Theatre. Z-PAC Theatre’s Artist Director Theresa Saunders said she was very pleased with the selection. “As the Artistic Director of the theatre, it is my job to select each year’s program. THE FIRM WORDS with Melissa Guilfoyle

Time is of the essence Time is free, but its priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you have lost it, you can never get it back – Harvey Mackay. What does time is of the essence mean when you are buying a house in Queensland? This means that if a party does not do what they are obligated to do under the contract within the timeframe specified, the other party is entitled to terminate the contract and you will be in default, which means you may lose your deposit and be at risk of being sued for damages. If you cannot complete the obligation within the timeframe specified in the contract, you can seek an extension of time, but the extension can only be granted by mutual agreement. A recent case in Queensland has bought the issue of time is of the essence into the spotlight. According to media reports, the contract was subject to finance and the purchasers needed the

bank to attend settlement on a specific day to provide the finances to the seller for settlement of the purchase. The bank allegedly were not ready in time for settlement and needed a one day extension. The sellers did not agree to the extension and terminated the contract when it did not settle on time. The purchasers were left with no deposit and no house. This happened because time is of the essence. It is not just settlement that is affected by the timeframes, but also any other condition such as building and pest inspections, finance and any other special conditions. It can be complex which is why we recommend seeking legal advice prior to signing a contract. If you are buying or selling a property in Queensland, call the Firm of the Avenue and speak to one of our team.

ON A mission to raise awareness of mental health, Hervey Bay local Shane Walker was in the saddle most of last weekend as he participated in the 2021 PukaUp Ride for Suicide Prevention. Riders around Australia took part in their own 331.8 kilometre bike riding challenge in their own towns; Mr Walker beat his target by riding 348km. The number 331.8 kilometres honours the 3318 people who took their lives in 2019. Charity organisation PukaUp recently launched a preventative, mental wellbeing course specifically for Australian businesses called ‘Foundations of Wellbeing’. It is the product of a collaboration between the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Wellbeing Science and alffie. To help prepare for the program's launch, PukaUp aimed to raise $330,000 from the three-day, 331.8 km cycling event around the country. Mr Walker raised around $2000 through his GoFundMe page. He thanked his many sponsors, including Giant Hervey Bay bike shop. Mr Walker said, “Like PukaUp, I am passionate about mental health and suicide prevention, and I have decided to support PukaUp on this important mission to help create lasting positive change in workplaces across Australia.” On the first day of the threeday ride Mr Walker, along with

Mark Mcdonald, Shane Walker and David Trevorrow ready to ride Mark Mcdonald and David Trevorrow rode to Burrum Heads and Howard. The second day took them to Burrum Heads, and then they joined the Criterion race as part of the Hervey Bay 100 triathlon. The last day was a circuit around town. PukaUp was founded five years ago by AFL legend Wayne Schwass. Schwass understands the challenges that many Australians face regarding mental ill-health, having battled and survived mental health conditions during his AFL career. “The PukaUp aim is to help people stay healthy by equipping individuals with the practical tools, capacity

and confidence to empower them to take charge of their mental health and emotional wellbeing,” said Schwass. “We know that improved wellbeing results in employees who come to work happier, healthier and more productive. This is why we’ve partnered with alffie and Uni of Melbourne to create Foundations of Wellbeing.” Mr Walker said Mr Schwass planned to visit Hervey Bay in the new year and encouraged people to come and listen to the inspiring speaker. Recycling booms MORE than 100,000 tonnes of material were diverted from Fraser Coast landfill for recycling and reuse during the last financial year. Councillor David Lee said 180,000 tonnes of material passed over the weigh bridges at the Nikenbah Transfer facility and the Saltwater Creek Road Landfill site in Maryborough during the 2020/21 financial year. “Of the 180,000 tonnes that came on to the site, only 72,000 tonnes went into landfill,” Cr Lee said. “The rest was reused, repurposed or recycled.” “Council collected and recycled 11,000 tonnes of material from the fortnightly kerbside bin collection,” Cr Lee said. “Our plan to build a new Material Recovery Facility will improve the amount of material we recover from the kerbside collection and again lower the amount of material going to landfill.” Council recently proposed to include a glass recycling processing plant and mixed fibre optic-sorting unit (to sort paper) in its application for a $8million grant from the Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) to build a new $16million Materials Recovery Facility. The proposed glass processing plant will clean and crush glass from the Fraser Coast, and potentially take glass from other regional

As part of its recycling efforts, Council also provided refuse and recycle education through school visits, site visits and group tours of the materials

recovery and recycling facilities. Cr Lee thanked residents who had dropped off their unused and unwanted items at the waste facilities. “We sold 1,320 tonnes of items through our Nikenbah and Maryborough tip shops,” Cr Lee said. “If items are not in re-sellable condition, we salvage whatever we can at our recycling shed before disposing the rest to landfill,” he said. Cr Lee encouraged residents to continue sorting their rubbish into reusable, recyclables, green waste and rubbish before heading to a waste facility to ensure they don’t go to landfill.

Buy Local gift card reaches 200 milestone The 200th business has joined the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Buy Local campaign. Fraser Coast residents and businesses are being encouraged to keep supporting Council’s Buy Local campaign. Fraser Coast Gift Cards are the cornerstone of Council’s Open for Business Buy Local campaign, which was introduced in response to COVID-19, Mayor George Seymour said. “Buying local is the best way for people to support Fraser Coast businesses, it’s great for local jobs and great for our local communities,” he said. “Every $100 spent locally provides at least a $180 benefit to the local economy through the multiplier effect which is why we’re urging everyone to get behind this campaign and support local businesses.” Businesses from Tiaro, Maryborough and Hervey Bay are involved in the program. Long-standing Maryborough business, Earle’s Paint Place, became the 200th business to join the network that will accept the Buy Local Gift Cards. Melissa White, the granddaughter of the Earle’s Paint Place founders believes joining the network will be a boost for the family business. High School graduation, a joyful end to a strange couple of years

SCHOOLS across the region have celebrated the determination and resilience of the graduating Year 12 students over the past couple of weeks. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Education Minister Grace Grace have farewelled the graduating class of 2021 and wished them well in their future endeavours. The Premier paid tribute to the young Queenslanders finishing their schooling years during extremely challenging times. “Our Year 12s are inspirational young Queenslanders and have completed their final two years of schooling under the shadow of COVID,” the Premier said. “The Class of ’21 have had to learn to adapt and, most impressive of all, simply get on with it, no matter what was thrown at them. “They don’t get nearly enough credit for their resilience so I am saying it now: congratulations. You made it! “Queensland’s future is in good hands.” Minister Grace thanked teachers and staff for their hard work. “The teaching workforce and entire school community have done a wonderful job supporting this cohort throughout their education journey, especially during the impacts of the pandemic,” Minister Grace said.

U3A President Lyn Quince and Course Coordinator Colin Coates start work on the 2022 course timetable WHAT Colin Coates enjoys most about being a tutor for U3A Hervey Bay is sharing something he has been passionate about his whole life – British history. Twice a month he shares his interest with a group of about ten members of U3A – University of the Third Age – who come to hear his talk about Queen Victoria, the Quakers who made chocolate or 1066, adding “there’s a lot to more to it than all that”. It takes him about 12 hours to research and prepare his presentation, 12 hours of immersion in a pastime he thoroughly enjoys. Colin doesn’t have a university degree in history – or anything else. Neither do half of the members of his tutor group. They simply come together for an hour and half every two weeks to share an interest. “That’s what U3A is all about,” according to president of the local chapter, Lyn Quince. “Without our tutors – ordinary people with a particular passion, skill or talent and willingness to share this with others – U3A

wouldn’t exist,” she added. U3A is an international organisation that provides informal educational classes and a range of lifestyle activities for those in what has been labelled the ‘third age’ of life. Its aim is to enrich the lives of seniors who are no longer working full-time, and promote life-long learning. The term ‘university’ is used only in the original sense of an association of teachers and students. You don’t need a university degree to be a tutor, nor to become a member of U3A and enrol in any of its courses. While U3A Hervey Bay already has a big and varied program, it’s looking for more tutors to expand its offering in 2022. “To timetable all this takes time and lots of consultation. For the best outcome we need expressions of interest from prospective tutors by mid-December for a program beginning in February,” Colin said. He’d particularly like to hear from someone willing to take on the popular Spanish language class next year.

U3A members have asked for instruction in things as diverse as digital photography, generic IT sessions – for example finding your way around ‘Word’ – and advice from someone who is able to unravel the mysteries of basic car maintenance for those without a clue. “Tutors decide whether their session runs weekly, fortnightly or monthly, on which day, where and for how long. Some offerings may be for a few weeks, others for a single semester or a year,” Colin said. “Some tutors use our dedicated room at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) on Old Maryborough Road. Others choose to meet at a club, cafe or the library.” While U3A tutors are not paid, the cost of overheads and consumables is covered. U3A Hervey Bay waives its $30 membership fee for tutors who can attend any courses offered by U3A Hervey Bay as well as U3A Maryborough and U3A Howard, for free. Anyone interested is invited to contact Colin at colincoates61@gmail.com.

RESPONSES to dog attacks, the location of dog off-leash areas, responsible pet ownership education and animal facility operating hours are among the issues being considered in the development of a Fraser Coast Regional Council domestic animal management strategy. Cr Paul Truscott said Fraser Coast residents were being encouraged to provide their input and feedback into the development of the region’s first comprehensive domestic animal management Strategy. “Council provides a range of animal management services for the community, with rangers investigating thousands of reports every year about dog attacks, barking dogs and wandering animals,” he said. “We also house impounded animals in dedicated facilities

and carry out responsible pet care programs to encourage registration, microchipping and desexing. “This new strategy will provide a framework for how we deliver animal management services over the next decade and help us balance community expectations with the available financial resources.” A dedicated animal management strategy page

has been established on Council’s Engagement Hub website –www.frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/ animal-management- with a short online survey, which is open to 12 December. “This initial community engagement will help Council develop a draft strategy, which will then go out to public comment in 2022 before it is finalised and adopted,” he said.

RESIDENTS and guests staying at the Pialba and Torquay caravan parks are being asked to have their say on master plans to guide the parks’ redevelopment. Cr Jade Wellings said Fraser Coast Regional Council owned four beachfront tourist caravan parks and was preparing master plans to guide their future development. “Master plans have been adopted for the Burrum Heads and Scarness caravan parks and we are now calling for feedback on draft master plans for the Pialba and Torquay caravan parks,” she said. The plans will guide the replacement of aging infrastructure to improve layout, safety and comfort of guests using the parks. “The master plans will ensure the parks provide the facilities needed such as

roadways and larger sites that can accommodate the larger modern RVs and caravans,” Cr Wellings said. “Caravans are now larger and more self-contained, so they need more space to manoeuvre. “Some of the survey questions focus on the number of sites in each park so the sites can be larger to cater for the bigger modern RVS and vans. “The RV and caravan market is very sophisticated, so park facilities have to be of a standard to attract visitors to our region, especially new visitors, all year around. “Our caravan parks are important assets; they are a major part of our tourism industry and the visitors they attract are very important to the regional economy.” To gauge feedback on the concept designs for the Pialba

and Torquay parks, residents, businesses and caravan park guests can participate in the survey through Council’s Engagement Hub website at https://frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/ caravan-parks The survey closes on December 23, 2021. “This is the community’s chance to tell us what features and facilities you would like to see in refurbished Councilowned caravan parks,” Cr Wellings said. It is anticipated that the feedback on the concept plans will be presented to Council next year. “Council has allocated $22 million to the redevelopment of the four caravan parks over five years with work already well underway at the Scarness caravan park,” Cr Wellings said.

Bus driver brings daily Hervey Bay Gallery joy to his passengers refurb underway

Project officer for the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery refurbishment Andrew Fechner shows Hervey Bay State MP Andrew Tantari and Councillor David Lewis through the building works.

Bus driver Ian Neller with appreciative passengers Juniper and Matilda Canning A KIND-hearted bus driver has been bringing joy to his passengers all year, and the school children who ride with him each day have spoken up and want to let the community know about his efforts. Year 7 student Juniper Canning has been catching the bus all year from Xavier Catholic College and said she loves going on the bus with driver Ian Neller. “Ian makes it so much fun, we look forward to seeing him every afternoon.” Juniper said, “We all try to do the right thing on the bus because we love Ian; even the kids who are naughty at school are good on the bus.” Some of his kind gestures for the school children have included dressing up in costumes when the children have themed weeks at school; waiting for the kids if they are

running late; dropping them as close to their home as possible. During a panic attack, he has comforted one of the children, and he often tries to sort out issues amongst the kids as they arise. Mr Neller has been driving Wide Bay Transit buses since 2016 on many different routes and said he loves his job, “It’s been great watching the kids grow up over the years.” He said he enjoyed getting to know the kids, having a laugh with them and being a good role model. “I notice if the kids don’t seem as chatty as normal, and I worry about them.” “I love seeing their smiling faces. I want to make sure they’re home safely but also that they are happy.” Wide Bay Transit Operation Manager Marion Hopkins described him as a very caring

person, “He often talks to me about the kids and we discuss if we think there may be problems at home for any of them.” “I think he is like a father figure to some of them,” she said. Mr Neller said the job had many benefits which motivated him to give it his best effort, “I work with a great team, my boss is fantastic and has helped me out at times.” “It’s not a stressful job, and I’m out of the weather.” “I love getting to meet new people and different characters all the time.” The bus driver goes above and beyond in trying to unify through kindness. He helps seniors on and off the bus if they need it, and he has been known to stop traffic to help a car in trouble on the road while on his bus route.

A LARGER gallery with capacity to host more national and significant art exhibitions will be the result of a $2.7 million refurbishment of the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery. Work on the refurbishment project has started and the revamped gallery is set to reopen in April 2022. Fraser Coast Regional Council recently awarded the $1.4m contract to refurbish the building to Carfax Commercial Constructions. A further $754,000 was awarded to Trane Technologies Australia to upgrade the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Cr David Lewis said Council embarked on the refurbishment program after the climate control system at the facility, which housed the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and the Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere, failed in early 2020. “There was a lot of damage

from water getting into the building and mould contamination, which meant furniture and fixtures had to be removed and the facility deep cleaned,” he said. “Council took the opportunity to bring forward a major refurbishment to boost the capacity of the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery to attract and host major touring exhibitions. “We will have the space to host large, significant exhibitions and an air conditioning and climate control system that is suitable to host these events. Maintaining an even temperature and humidity is very important when artworks are put on display.” Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program was helping create jobs for local businesses and local tradies with the region

receiving almost $65 million for community infrastructure projects. Cr Lewis said the gallery refurbishment would be paid for through a combination of insurance reimbursement and $400,000 from the $9,040,000 awarded to Council from the State Government’s COVID Works For Queensland program and Council. “We appreciate the patience from residents as this project has unfolded with COVID-19 and the booming construction market causing some delays in obtaining reports, quotes and materials,” he said. “With the contracts now awarded for the building refurbishment and air conditioning, heat and ventilation upgrade, we look forward to welcoming even bigger and better exhibitions to the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery in 2022.”

Keeping Santa's Reindeer Safe

NEWSINBRIEF More road and infrastructure projects start

The Fraser Coast Regional Council has started work on road and infrastructure projects valued at $1.8m across the region. “Council is responsible for about 2,700 kilometres of roads and footpaths throughout the region, and about a third of our capital works budget goes towards maintaining and improving roads, footpaths, bridges and drainage,” said Cr Denis Chapman. Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said, “Hervey Bay is fast moving ahead, so supporting the Council’s priority road infrastructure determinations for our city, is important to our city’s growth.” In Hervey Bay, the road pavement in Southerden Street between Honiton and Robert streets will be replaced in a $495,000 project and at Pier Park, Urangan, 28 pathway lights will be replaced. As part of the $150,000 lighting project, the existing poles, lights and wiring, which have reached the end of their serviceable life, will be replaced. There will be disruptions to traffic flow while the road works are progressing so motorists are urged to avoid these areas if possible. “In the current budget, Council allocated $48.8

million for road projects such as these, which were identified during our ongoing asset inspection program.

Cute but not cuddly IT IS WHELPING season on K’gari (Fraser Island), and trail cameras set by the Department of Environment and Science (DES) have captured the young wongari (dingo) pups as they emerge from their dens. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) Ranger in Charge Linda Behrendorff said the pups were between two and-three months old, and were on a steep learning curve. “The pups are learning natural hunting and survival skills from their parents and carers, so it is critical that people leave them alone and don’t get too close,” Ms Behrendorff said. “They’re being weaned and are now feeding on the types of food they’ll eat for the rest of their lives. “Limiting wongari-human interaction is important for the pups’ welfare as they venture out of their dens and explore the island. “The pups are usually part of a pack that includes two adults and one or more sub adults, and the pups are curious and skittish and don’t like being too far from parents. “The trail cameras show there are plenty of natural prey species on the island, including wallabies and bandicoots to support the dingo population. “They also get access to marine animals that wash ashore. Seasonally there are plentiful sources of fruits such as midgen berry.

Wongari pups on K’gari “To avoid the pups and their pack becoming habituated, people are reminded to store all food securely and secure all rubbish, fish and bait.” Ms Behrendorff said the trail cameras had captured a pack of pups outside the den and nursery area during the day and at night. “They are sniffing the air and wandering about and one of the pups is eating food left by mum and learning how to protect it from the other pups,” she said. “During whelping time, wongari mums may be determined and aggressive while searching for food for their pups, and mums will aggressively defend their young. “So people really need to be dingo-safe, and give them plenty of space. “People are also reminded that there are fines for interacting and deliberately or inadvertently feeding wongari. “Wongari mums that are feeding pups can also lose

conditioning and become naturally lean during this time. “It is amazing to see wongari pups on the island, and to stay safe they’re best observed from a distance.” Report dingo encounters – email dingo.ranger@des.qld. gov.au, tell the nearest QPWS ranger, or phone 4127 9150 . Take note of location, vehicle registration, dingo ear tag colour, number and which ear.

BEAUTIFUL GIFT BOXES DELIVERED ...TO ANYWHERE! Remove the stress of gifting this Christmas and save time by choosing to deliver a carefully curated Christmas gift box or Hamper – available now.

Be dingo-safe on K’gari:

• Carry a stick. • Never feed dingoes. • Always stay within arm’s reach of children, even small teenagers. • Walk in groups. • Do not run. Running or jogging can trigger a negative dingo interaction. • Camp in fenced areas when possible. • Lock up food stores and iceboxes (even on a boat). • Never store food or food containers in tents. • Secure all rubbish, fish and bait.

Tiny house is big on heart and soul LESS is more in a tiny house as Pam Blacka is discovering in her cute and cozy new home. Ms Blacka downsized from her three bedroom home in Toogoom and has been living in her new movable dwelling, located in the Burrum Rivers Caravan Park, since September. Inside her six metre long customised home, the interior features exposed rafters under a gabled roof, full insulation, living area with a sofa bed and full height wardrobe, a kitchen with overhead cupboards and a bathroom with a unique incinerating toilet. “I find it really comfortable, and it’s great knowing it's really well made.” Ms Butler said she enjoyed the build process as she had a lot of input with the fixtures as she followed the build progress. One of her favourite features is the incinerating toilet. “It’s not connected to a septic or sewerage system; there is no water involved, you don’t flush it, you push a button, and a catalyst burns up the waste for tipping into the rubbish safely.” Ms Butler said the smaller size home suited her, “I wanted something small, something easier to look after.” She said she loved the feeling of clearing out the cupboards from her old house before she moved, “There were things in the cupboards I didn’t even realise I had.” “It has made me be more conscious when I’m buying

Former police officer inspired by social work

Michelle Minchin uses her knowlege and experience to help others AS A FORMER police officer and army soldier, Michelle Minchin has helped people during some of their lowest times – including when they’ve been impacted by domestic violence or suicide. Now Mrs Minchin is consolidating her insights and skills gained from her varied life experiences – which also include mother, author and coal mine truck operator – by embarking on a new career as a social worker. “These roles have given me empathy, perseverance and grit as well as a window into how others live to see what is really happening in society,” said Mrs Minchin, who began a Bachelor of Social Work at USC’s Fraser Coast campus this year. “These are beneficial skills for dealing with those who need support and reassurance, and

to help them develop their own capacity to live their best lives.” Motivated by her desire to help others, Mrs Minchin has already drawn on her knowledge and experiences by contributing to a new book, Forever Changed by Suicide, a chapter that explores the confronting issue of suicide from the perspective of a police officer. “I am also putting together a book with other authors about domestic violence because this seems to be a subject that is not properly talked about,” she said. “People need help, and they need it now. The rates of domestic violence have soared since COVID-19 restrictions and enforced isolations have been incurred.” When her own business and professional life was impacted by the pandemic, Ms

Minchin – who has diplomas in writing and counselling and a Master of Leadership and Management (Policing) – decided it was time to gain further qualifications as a pathway to a new career. “My own recent challenges led to me to consider what would make my heart sing,” she said. “I had recently relocated to the Fraser Coast, and when I heard about USC’s Bachelor of Social Work being offered at the local campus, I knew this would fit the bill perfectly,” she said. “I am a people person and when I complete this degree, I intend that my scope of practice will be in areas that focus primarily on providing crucial support and counselling to those affected by family and domestic violence and suicide.”

LETTEROFGRATITUDE Thank you for handing in my wallet

Earlier in November my purse fell out of my car at Fraser Coast Fruit and Vegetable while I was shopping. I received a phone call to attend the police station where it had been handed in. The couple who had found it didn’t want their names divulged. As I am not on Facebook or any other social media sites, I had no idea how to express

my gratitude. It is gratifying to know there are some really honest people in our community and I am grateful that two of them found my purse.

Many many thanks Sue O’Brien

Dog rescue gratitude

Thank you to the lovely guy who came and rescued myself and my kelpie dog on the bike path last week between Bideford and Tavistock Street, when a loose dog came up and started attacking us.

I didn’t even get your name and really appreciated your help, so thank you

Sam Gould

Why Solahart continues to be a trusted brand in solar energy “Since 2011, around 700 solar energy companies have gone bust or are no longer trading, leaving about 650,000 customers without support or warranties” Fraser Coast Solahart owner Darren Page said. “It’s just a fact of the industry that some solar providers practice unlawful tactics which keep customers without support and we have even seen some of the more unscrupulous solar energy providers that have gone bust ‘phoenix’ themselves into new solar companies, just to avoid paying debts and honouring warranties, by changing their company name, the business is no longer liable for their existing installations. This leaves customer systems stranded without support’. Situations like this result in customers having a poor experience with solar when it should be the other way around. To avoid being left without support, we encourage our customers to ask the following five key questions to a potential solar provider: 1. Will someone come to my home? Carrying out a home solar assessment is essential for the potential solar provider to understand your exact needs. 2. Do you test the products you sell? Do they do any testing before they incorporate a product into their range? How confidently do they answer this question and how convinced are you of their processes? 3. How long have you been in business? How long have they been in business? What do their customers say about them? Are they professional in their dealings, and do they work at maintaining a positive brand presence? What do you see when you Google their name? 4. Are your installers Clean Energy Council Accredited? Every solar installer needs to be accredited by the Clean Energy Council (CEC). This means a troublefree process and a system that will be connected safely

and in accordance with industry guidelines. 5. What are your warranties like? Pay close attention to what is in the fine print. Less reputable companies will try to take shortcuts regarding warranties as they know they are offering a poor product. As Australia’s pioneer of solar water heating and an active part of the local solar energy sector for over 65 years, we are concerned about recent reports of questionable and unlawful activities by some solar companies. These activities include high-pressure sales tactics, price inflation, and closing down. It doesn’t matter who put your solar in – we can help… “If you have a system on your roof that is more than five years old, it definitely requires an analysis by our in-house solar health check technician” Darren said. “On the lower end, you may not be getting the best value from your system and panels. Panel degradation can lead to jumps in electricity bills, that you are not even noticing. On the higher end, there may be undiagnosed faults with your system that are just simply dangerous. Maybe you are seeing a red light on the inverter and have no idea what that means?” “It doesn’t matter who you bought the system from or who fitted it, we provide expert advice and remedy for potential problems, problems you don’t even know you have.” “A lot of customers we deal with, who installed solar other than from Solahart, have no idea if their products are even still in warranty. You can’t just stick it on your roof, in the weather, for years and years, and not invest in maintaining and servicing the product. You wouldn’t do that with your car.” For 100% obligation free advice about the very best solar solution for you, contact one of the friendly team at Solahart Hervey Bay on 4124 2522 or visit us at 95-97 Islander Rd, Pialba. Guts, grunt and good looks. This ute is a triple threat

THE ALL new LDV T60 MAX 4x4 Diesel dual cab ute has the power, strength and features to get you from the worksite to the weekend without breaking a sweat. Available in a 6-speed manual or an optional 8-speed ZF auto, the incredible BiTurbo Diesel Euro V Engine with 160kW of power and 500Nm of torque is one of the most powerful engines in its class. With the peace of mind of a 5-star ANCAP safety rating (2017), and upgrade options with the T60 MAX Pro or T60 MAX Luxe, it’s easy to find your perfect ride. The all new LDV T60 MAX 4x4 Diesel dual cab gives you confidence off the beaten track and you’ll be ready for any off-road action with the T60 MAX’s 4WD capabilities. With high and low-range

4WD, rear on demand differential lock (Luxe only) for maximum traction and hill descent control, you can take on the weekend no matter what conditions or terrain you come up against. Or if you prefer the T60 MAX to do all the work, just select ‘Auto’ on the 4WD selector and the Intelligent Real-Time Torque on demand from BorgWarner will automatically deliver the grunt where and when you need it. Just because the T60 MAX can take on the tough stuff doesn’t mean you’re in for a rough ride. Long days and drives are made even easier with cruise control, and the multifunctional steering wheel puts more control at your fingertips – turn up your favourite tunes and take calls without taking your eyes off the road.

Touchscreen climate control keeps you comfortable, from chilly winter mornings through blazing summer days. Keyless entry and start in the MAX Luxe means there’s no fumbling for keys, and with this model, heated leathertrimmed front seats with 6-way electronic adjustment comes as standard. The LDV T60 MAX is a ute you can count on. But in case the unexpected happens, you’re covered with a five-year/130,000km (whichever occurs first) new vehicle warranty, roadside assistance and access to a loan car program for warranty repairs. This is all backed by our nationwide LDV dealer network, for all your servicing, parts and sales support. For a test drive or to find out more, visit Port City LDV or www.portcityldv.com.au

Ordering thousands of cars a year, is all in a day’s work WHEN Toni Delfs began her working life like including a long-term stint as the dealerships “If you add in special orders that customers so many other young people do, behind the stock controller. require, which need to line up with specific build register at McDonalds, a long term career at the “I would often got asked what a stock dates, it’s challenging but very rewarding.” region’s largest multi-franchise car dealership controller does and there is a lot more to it than “Over the time I was performing that role, we was understandably not on her radar. just selling one car and ordering another one to went from 700 cars a year to over 1,800.” A Hervey Bay local through and through, from the age of just fourteen she spent five years learning systems and work ethic at McDonalds, a valuable introduction to her working life. “I still remember that first job, all those years ago. It was such a good grounding for what would lay ahead of me. To have that structure and responsibility was very important”, Toni said. Fast forward down the road of life and Toni found other outlets to expand her knowledge and experience, including working at the Caltex on Boat Harbour Drive, back when there wasn’t a petrol station on every corner, like it feels there is now. “That was the first time I had exposure to the motoring industry. We would purchase our fleet cars, the rentals cars we had there, from Wide Bay Motor Group. It was that connection that allowed me to join the group and that was fourteen years ago Toni Delfs has been enjoying her job at Wide Bay Motor Group for 14 years. now.” take its place.” Employing over ninety staff, advancements in Toni started out at WBMG as a receptionist “It’s vital to maintain the companies’ stock technology have allowed the business to grow for a short six-week period before quickly being and deliver a more efficient service level. and positive culture at WBMG as the main contributor to her celebrating fourteen years of service this year. “When you come to work here, it’s a true team environment.” “From Jason our Dealer Principal down to our newest team member, we always greet each other with a smile and are ready to help out in any area. “We have quarterly companywide catch-up’s, which is a great opportunity to hear what is happening in every aspect of the business and we all look forward to our annual Awards Night. “They have turned into themed events now, which is a lot of fun and a great laugh as well’. Toni was awarded ‘Employee of the Year’ for Wide Bay Motor Group in 2015. Outside of work Toni loves to spend time with her one-year-old grandson, who lives with her and the extended family. “We have lived in the same house here in Hervey Bay for twenty years.” Down the track, when working life finishes for Toni, she would love to travel more, especially to Thailand and Bangkok. “Our eldest daughter was an Australian Champion Muay Thai fighter and competed in the World Games. We love travelling over there,” But for now, Toni is very much enjoying her role at WBMG and her professional development as a long-standing team member. “It might sound like a cliché, but I do really love coming to work here. They are just a great bunch of people.”

ABOUT VINTAGE COINS & BANKNOTES

Together with his wife, Rodney Mihelic has over 40 years’ experience and knowledge in the numismatics industry. His passion for collecting stamps, coins and then banknotes started as a young child influenced by his grandfather. He learnt from the best and his passion for collecting coins and banknotes allowed him to become a numismatic professional. He also enjoys helping people with collecting or investing whether it is big or small. Vintage Coins and Banknotes is a family-owned, online coin and banknote shop and is one of Australia’s leading coin and banknote dealers, proud to be servicing Australia and internationally. Providing an honest, discrete and diligent service, they specialise in buying and selling coins and banknotes be it for investment or private collection, and also valuations for deceased estate.

WANTING TO INVEST IN NUMISMATICS?

Did you know that you can invest in high end coins, banknotes, gold and silver coins?

With little to no return for keeping your money in the bank, real estate being too expensive, and stock market and crypto being a risky investment, we can help you create an investment portfolio in numismatics. We also can help with SMSFs (Self-Managed Superannuation Funds). So, if your current superannuation is not performing, investing in numismatics for long term could help you achieve a much better return.

WE ARE PREPARING FOR A “ONCE IN A GENERATION” JANUARY SALES BOOM When the borders are fully open and Christmas has come and gone, we are forecasting buyer demand in January, to be the largest Hervey Bay has ever seen.

AS A HOME SELLER - YOU MUST NOT MISS THIS SELL YOUR HOUSE WITH US CALL US TODAY ON 4194 1754 OR SCAN THIS QR CODE TO MESSAGE US

You cannot get the best result in January, if you don’t start the process of listing your home in December.

What will happen when more interstate buyers can move to our region?

We can help you with this, right now. You must be prepared for the influx of buyers and be ahead of your competition.

We think January is going to be huge. We have experienced an unprecedented rate of growth, with our property market performing even stronger than anyone ever expected, achieving levels not seen for a number of decades.

If you cast an eye over the last twelve months and the trends we have seen over that time, it’s almost impossible to make a case, that the market is going to slow down. With the opening of QLD borders, we are expecting a torrent of interstate buyers to target the Hervey Bay marketplace in January. Now is the time to perfectly position yourself to hit the ground running, with the marketing of your home to commence in early January. A lot of that work must be done now, in preparation for a strong result for you in January. We work with you throughout December to launch onto the market.

Don’t miss out on this vital period. You want to get the highest possible market price for your property and we can achieve this for you. Let’s start a conversation....

Leah Quinn Principal - Prime Agents

SELL YOUR HOUSE WITH US CALL US TODAY ON 4194 1754 OR SCAN THIS QR CODE TO MESSAGE US

TO GET THE BEST PRICE IN JANUARY, YOU NEED TO CREATE COMPETITION FOR YOUR HOME. Your home is on the market in competition with other homes, not in isolation. To win that competition, you need strong and effective marketing that reaches every possible buyer and creates multiple-offers for your property. This is how we do that.... 5 Bed | 3

Market Leaders Dodging The Rain and Still Selling Heaps!

C.E.O Oscar Wooduc Jnr echoed the thoughts of many real estate experts on market expectation for 2022. The Queensland market should remain strong with Brisbane prices to rise 4-8% at least in 2022 – Should also be good for Queensland regional areas especially like Hervey Bay if they’re coastal. Interstate migration especially from Melbourne & Sydney should drive the market for at least the next year – but always depends on what’s happening around the world and that unknown beast Covid-19. Oscar stated that getting the jab was a no brainer and he felt like a Cool Cat after getting both jabs and a lot more secure with his job as C.E.O at Chris Couper & Associates.
