PEAK industry bodies including the Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce and the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association have written to the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Steven Miles, to acknowledge their support for the Fraser Coast Regional Council.
The Fraser Coast Regional Council has flatly rejected the draft Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan.
The overriding issue has been the lack of consultation, which has been defined as narrow and limited.
The Hervey Bay Chamber describes the plan as flawed and FCPIA lacks confidence in the current direction.
The consensus is the Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan does not in any way represent the needs of Hervey Bay as a part of the Fraser
Dear Editor,
Thank-you for a wonderful newspaper – having an actual paper to read is much preferable to the digital form.
In regards to the subject line, having a permanent disability, a friend of mine who lives at River Heads came to Urangan to take me to her local Markets.
I was impressed with the variety of stalls, and the only downside to it was the access to the site.
The ground is uneven, with
rocks, pebbles and gravel scattered everywhere, making navigation around the stalls a challenge for me.
If it wasn’t for my friend’s assistance, I wouldn’t have been able to cope on my own.
I am wondering if the Council has plans to make the markets site disabledfriendly?
Kind regards,
Mrs Colleen Crabb URANGANI have always believed (silly
me), that local, state and federal governments heed the needs of the people.
But do they? Our country, we are told, has people sleeping rough; reason, a lack of accommodation.
Why is this so? Sadly, I have already covered that.
But I read in our local paper (Advertiser), that a property on the Esplanade with the ability to house somewhere between 50 and 100 persons is on the market for $ 2.9 million.
It is there ready to go, maybe a little TLC, but nothing more.
Coast region, despite its position as one the fastest growing regions in the country.
The draft plan purports to have a strong focus on attracting and retaining people in the region, promoting workforce opportunities, enhancing the region’s existing economic strengths while growing emerging industries, and reinforcing the region’s positive reputation for liveability and community.
It strives to achieve this by providing a strengthened economic strategy for the region and identifying integrated land use and infrastructure planning responses, including actions to be delivered over the short, medium and long term.
Our brightest local minds disagree.
The reason this is important to all of us, is this strategic outlook plan stretches decades into the future.
We the ratepayers, via our council, could buy this and use it for emergency housing. Limit the time of stay (that gives everyone a go) and set rents at cost coverage only, no profit.
Let’s see if we are really a caring community and if our councillors really give a dam.

FCRC is firmly on the front foot, rejecting the plan with a belief that the draft Regional Plan does not represent an accurate or complete vision for the Wide Bay Burnett region and does not contain the foundations to address the region’s challenges or unlock the region’s significant opportunities.
They equally believe the current draft plan creates more problems than it solves, it is a net negative for the Fraser Coast region and it should not be endorsed or adopted by the State Government.
I’ve been in the local media here for a very long time and it’s a very rare occasion that you see all industry bodies on the same page with the same view.
Read more about the issue on page 11 of this week’s Advertiser to get yourself informed about the draft plan; the draft is an interesting read.
1,600 or more, mortgage holders changing from a low interest rate to over 6% and having mortgage payments increased by a thousand or more per month.
Many will have maxed out their loan borrowing to buy the dream home.
If they are not able to pay their mortgage, what choices do they have?
(sic) Firstly, they could sell the home and end up owing the bank and rent a place.
Secondly, they could rent their house and rent another place cheaper hopefully and cut their living costs.
Thirdly get some housemates in to share the mortgage costs and there may be other options.
If there was an option to rent their house and live in a caravan at the parent’s house, while not ideal, it is a temporary solution to their needs.
What parent would turn their children down if they really need help and not have them living in a car?
The rental crisis in Australia is to quote our treasurer’s words “It is bad now but will get a lot worse before it gets better”.
The influx of 200,000 new immigrants and the 20,000-boat people will all be looking for a rental and the capacity is not there so for the mortgage crisis people the caravan may well be the best option.

I want to congratulate your Publishers Point column in the Hervey Bay Advertiser February 23rd edition.
The last couple of years has seen property prices increase by more than any other time in the history of the region and has added Billions of dollars in equity to this region.
This will become a major driver for our local economy that many industries can benefit.
The reality is many home owners will use this equity in many ways to finance new investments such as properties, cars, home improvements, etc.
Yes, they will have to deal with higher interest rates and deal with the risk, but ultimately there is a massive
injection of funds that will benefit many organisations which creates more jobs.
Yes, the affordability of housing has become an issue again but that is the facts of being a region that people have confidence in to invest.
Let’s not be critical and discourage a town that is partly driven by confidence levels.
The only risk I see is council leveraging this growth with much higher council rates which I would suggest is not going to happen with a local election 12 months away.
The Fraser Coast Property Industry Association now have a very important role with working with the local council to plan ahead to develop this potential and support home owners and investors.
We have more younger families coming to this region than ever before. Lets plan for their future.

When is action going to be taken around e-scooters?
The amount of times I have nearly been run down by a
rider not abiding by the rules is crazy!
They fly up and down the esplanade, through crossings and public pathways with zero concern for anyone else. Still seeing many riders with no helmets or using a bell upon approaching the public.
I have seen riders fly across driveways with a couple of near misses but did see one young girl hit the side of a car, luckily no one was injured.
One day someone is going to be in a serious accident. What are we doing about it?
Marie Brown, Torquay
Hervey Bay is booming and growing at a rate never seen before.
I love seeing all the new and young families take residence here.
I hope that local council start to see us as a large town and no longer sleepy Hervey Bay.
We need more facilities and attractions, especially medical and policing to help with our growing population.

THE DRAFT Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan requires more collaboration with Councils as it does not properly address the region’s challenges or unlock new opportunities, Fraser Coast Regional Council said today.
Cr David Lewis said the Regional Plan was meant to set the direction for managing population growth and regional development over the next 25 years, and more work needed to be done to get it right.
“Council believes that the draft Regional Plan does not represent an accurate or complete vision for the Wide Bay Burnett region and does not contain the foundations to address the region’s challenges or unlock the region’s significant opportunities,” he said.
“If adopted in its current form, the plan will cause significant additional financial cost to Council given it would increase conflicts rather than reduce them.”
Cr Lewis said that important actions and priorities relating to the Fraser Coast region were inaccurately reflected or not considered at all in the draft plan.
“A concerning outcome of the lack of collaboration with Council is the failure of the draft Plan to recognise many key infrastructure priorities and opportunities,” he said.
Cr Darren Everard said consultation to prepare the draft had been limited and disjointed due to COVID-19 disruptions and multiple changes in the Queensland Government staff managing the project.
“The State Government did not request any relevant information or data and Council was not meaningfully engaged in the preparation
of the draft Plan which has resulted in extensive inaccuracies and policy conflicts,” he said.
“For example, from 2016 to 2021, the Wide Bay Burnett region grew by 18,619 people. The Fraser Coast region accounted for 49% of the growth, a trend predicted to continue.
“This is not reflected in the drafting of the content and mapping of the various centres and their existing and future functions.”
Cr Lewis said he hoped the Queensland Government would consider Council’s request not to adopt the draft Regional Plan in its current form and to instead consult Councils on the development of a new draft.
“The current draft plan creates more problems than it solves, and it is a net negative for the Fraser Coast region. It should not be endorsed or adopted by the State Government,” he said.

A PREMIER field surrounded by a stadium and earth banks that could seat thousands of spectators is among features proposed in the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct Master Plan 2022.
“The draft master plan which was endorsed by Council on Wednesday February 22 is the strategic vision for the future staged development of the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct,” Cr Darren Everard said.
“It identifies what the site should look like and how it should function and takes into consideration community needs and aspirations, existing and potential future users as well as emerging trends in sport and recreation.”
It is envisaged that the field would have permanent spectator seating for 3,500 and grass spectator embankments surrounding the field, creating an amphitheatre effect which could accommodate 20,000 additional spectators.
Key facilities will include a premier AFL oval, capable of supporting a rectangular field, lighting, scoreboard, covered seating and embankments,
amenities and support facilities for players, coaches and officials, kitchen and kiosk, storage facilities and a gymnasium.
The master plan outlines three ovals, clubhouse, and amenities, eight additional netball courts and an athletics precinct featuring a grass athletics track.
The precinct has already hosted the Brisbane Roar football team on multiple occasions for training camps and exhibition games attended by thousands of people, while the Queensland Reds rugby union squad recently held a pre-season training camp there.
“The completion of stage one was a significant milestone, but it’s also the first step in a long journey. This precinct will grow as
our community grows,” Cr Everard said.
“It’s an investment for now and it’s an investment for the future of Fraser Coast sport, leisure and entertainment.”
Facilities in the leisure centre could include:
• an indoor courts zone with five multi-purpose indoor courts and one show court with retractable seating;
• a health and fitness centre;
• a wellness/ allied health centre with dedicated consultation rooms;
• indoor and outdoor climbing;
• a café and retail zone;
• an aquatics zone featuring a warm water program pool;
• an outdoor zone featuring beach volleyball courts; and
• future potential outdoor multi-purpose hard courts, and future expansion areas.

The Fraser Branch of Wildlife Queensland has invited Don and Lesley Bradley, of the Queensland Wader Study Group, to speak on shorebirds at the Hervey Bay Library on Friday March 17 and at the Maryborough Library on Friday March 31. Their story shows how climate change, habitat destruction, and coastal development are pushing threatened migratory shorebirds towards extinction; some species experiencing a decline of 80% in the last three decades.
It is a story of their survival - up to 13,000 kms - along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway on their epic annual flights. When they finally reach Australia, starving and exhausted, they need a safe place to rest and feed.
To become aware of these tenacious shorebirds, book for the talks by phoning the library on 4197 4220 or going online by booking on Eventbrite. The talks begin at 1.00pm.

CARTER Cooper Realty has won ‘Agency of the Year’ and Principal Kim Carter has been awarded ‘Agent of the Year’, for the seventh year running in the recent ‘Rate My Agent’ National Awards.
Rate My Agent provides recommendations, ranking and reviews for real estate agents in Australia and USA.
“Rate My Agent has a goal to assist homeowners in selecting the best real estate agent for their property sale by offering an impartial comparison service,” Kim said.
“The platform uniquely leverages verified customer reviews, linked to the property transaction and provides valuable insights into a potential agent's performance
and working style.”
“We have an amazing team here at Carter Cooper and it is a privilege for us to be awarded in this way for a seventh straight year.”
“Having happy customers who are pleased to talk about their experience with us, is something that really drives us. Word of mouth is such a powerful tool when it comes to selecting goods and services. Reviews are something that everyone pays a lot of close attention to.”
“I fell in love with the real estate game over 20 years ago and I still have a passion for it. It’s important to keep learning, to stay fiercely client focussed and to make every customer feel vitally important.”
Kim is also the Zone Chair for the REIQ in the Hervey Bay region and despite her busy workload, she continues to have a goal of being at the top of the game.
“The Hervey Bay marketplace is still going very strong. We haven’t really seen any drop off, despite a lot of talk about a softening in the housing market.”
“You only have to take a look around at all of the exciting development happening in our city, to know that Hervey Bay has a very bright and prosperous future.”
“There is a tremendous amount of investment and infrastructure pouring into our region. We are still very much a destination for buyers.”
FRASER Coast residents are being encouraged to take part in the Love Food Hate Waste Challenge to stop wasting food and start saving money.
Cr Darren Everard said Fraser Coast Regional Council had joined the international Love Food Hate Waste movement to help residents tackle food waste.
“Most of the food waste in Australia comes from our homes - Australian households waste 2.5 million tonnes of food each year, or more than four kilograms per household per week,” he said.
“Avoiding food waste can reduce costs for households by between $2,000 and $2,500 a year, while it is also good for the environment by reducing
what ends up in landfill.”
Cr Jade Wellings said the Love Food Hate Waste Challenge started on March 6 as part of International Food Waste Action Week.
“The challenge is a free, three-week program to help you understand your food waste habits while providing helpful tips and tricks for planning meals, shopping, food storage, recipes to use up leftovers and more,” she said.
“The first 100 residents to sign up to the challenge will receive a free gift to get them started, and there are also three great prizes to be won that will help you fight food waste, so visit the Fraser Coast Council website to sign up now.
To be a part of the fun, go to https://www.frasercoast. qld.gov.au/love-food-hatewaste to find out more and to register.
Prizes for those who sign up include a FoodSaver vacuum sealer kit to help keep your food fresh for longer (valued at $100); a Sistema leakproof food container set (valued at $50), and The Food Saver’s A-Z recipe book (valued $35).
Cr Everard said local businesses supporting the program on the Fraser Coast included Odyssey Bistro, Portside Café and Restaurant, Tres Salsa Mexican Restaurant Cantina, Alowishus Delicious Cafe and the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre.

MARCH ON IN & GRAB OUR
IN A FIRST for the Hervey Bay region, 150 senior school students from Hervey Bay High are wearing jumpers with a difference this year. Each jumper is made from 38 recycled plastic bottles.
This ground-breaking initiative continues the school’s quest for a focus on the environment.
Samantha White, Student and Event Support at Hervey Bay State High School, was excited by the ambitious project.
“Our values around environmentally sustainable and socially responsible practices align with our commitment to a greener future.”
“Plastics are one of the most versatile materials that we make use of. They are all around us, whether at home, at work, when we go shopping or even when we’re on holiday. However, the prevalence of plastics also means that we have large amounts to dispose of.”
“The new jumpers have been a big hit with the senior cohort. The students must reach certain eligibility criteria to qualify for a jumper.”
“We pride ourselves on working with students
and families to establish productive partnerships that better place our students to transition into further education or training, or directly into the workforce.”
“The plastic bottles are recycled and then broken down into pellets. The manufacturer converts this into high quality yarn and then it is woven into a highperformance garment.”
Importantly, the jumpers work in the same way that sunblock works, when you apply it to the skin. The SPF50 fabric blocks 98% of the sun’s harmful rays.
The production goes even further than that.
Compared to traditional
jumper manufacturing, the Ecotek jumper uses 62% less energy and 99% less water in the production process.
There is also up to 35% less waste and upwards of 20% less C02 emitted into the atmosphere.
Due to its unique location and resources, Hervey Bay High School is able to offer a wide curriculum including marine studies, information and communication technologies, agricultural science, vocational education programs, traineeships and apprenticeships, first year university subjects through the University of the Sunshine Coast, as well as the full traditional range of subjects.
NIKITA Falconer is one brave lady, looking to make a difference for other local cancer sufferers.
In May of 2022, the local 32-year-old mother of two young girls was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer.
“After receiving my diagnosis, I was sent to Brisbane for surgery to remove the cancer that had spread in my body. I didn’t have the easiest time of things, that is for sure,” Nikita said.
“Four more operations, thirty days in hospital, including five of them in ICU, prolonged my initial cancer treatment from starting by approximately ten weeks.”
“Once I started my chemotherapy treatment, because of the previous operations I wasn’t able to initially receive my full doses of chemotherapy. I was however lucky enough to be one of two people that were able to use the only cold cap machine in the Wide Bay region for those twelve rounds of weekly chemotherapy.”
A cold cap lowers the temperature of the scalp by a few degrees. As a result, a much smaller amount of chemotherapy drugs is carried to the hair follicles.
“Cold caps are tightly fitting,
helmet-like hats filled with a cold gel or liquid that you wear during chemotherapy infusions. These devices have helped many people keep some or quite a bit of their hair during chemotherapy that can cause hair loss.”
“This can provide ladies with an enormous psychological boost and in many cases, assist them to feel like cancer has not taken their dignity or identity away.”
“Sadly, there are just two cold caps in the entire Wide Bay region. We are very lucky that they are both in Hervey Bay, but we need more.”
Last year Nikita held a pink ribbon morning tea in her front yard and raised $8,000. Now
she has her sights set even bigger.
Nikita is organising a fundraiser on May 20th, to purchase a new Cold Cap machine for the Forbes Cancer Centre at St Stephens Hospital. Each new machine cost $40,000.
“Another cold cap machine would allow two more people the same opportunity that I was fortunate to have. It would give them the hope that they need to get through this chaotic time in their lives.”
If you would like to support the event, it is being held at The Beach House on May 20th.

THE HERVEY Bay Men's Shed will be conducting its annual garage sale on Saturday March 18th and Sunday March 19th from 8.00am till 4.00pm.
“The HBMA is a community-based organisation that is accessible to all men,” Leon Baldwin, the local President said.
“Our mission is to advance the general health and wellbeing of men,”
“We achieve this objective by providing a safe, friendly and welcoming environment where members are able to work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time and in the company of other men.”
“Or you can just come along, have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all you’re looking for.”
“This focus encourages social inclusion which helps us play a role in addressing depression and male suicide which are major issues for men in today’s society.”
“We have a strong community focus and we are always ready to help the members of our community who are disadvantaged in some way.”
“Like all not-for-profit organisations that are run entirely by volunteers, we rely on our members to help raise the funds we need to remain financially viable so we can
continue to play an important role in our community.”
“That’s why we are encouraging everyone to come along to our annual garage sale and support the Hervey Bay Men’s Shed.”
The sale will be held at the Men's Shed, located at 28 Aalborg Road, Nikenbah 4655, near the council tip.
Items for sale will include, hand and electrical tools, furniture, white goods, toys and items made by shed members.
A Sausage Sizzle, cold drinks and EFTPOS will be available on the day.
“If anyone would like to know more about how they can get involved in the Hervey Bay Men’s Shed, they can contact us on 4325 3471, during shed hours 8.00am till 12.00pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.”

NETTIE’S real name is Annette, but no one calls her that except her mother when she is in trouble. Nettie has an unruly mop of fiery red, curly hair that is hard to tame, a huge heart and a great sense of humour.
At fifty-three years old, Nettie has much to be thankful for.
Nettie was born in Brisbane into a strict catholic household and grew up in Redcliffe. She has four sisters and is the second youngest. With a house full of five girls, Nettie says her dad was always grey.
“Dad had a hard hand if you didn’t do as you were told. That was how kids were brought up then. It was how we learned about boundaries,
discipline, and respect. It was a different era. I love my parents dearly for all that they instilled in me.
“But sometimes I think our religions are very limiting. Being open to experience doesn’t make you a bad person. It makes you human”.
As a child, Nettie liked to read and often found herself carried away on some adventure or another through the pages of whichever novel she was reading at the time. She also learnt to roller skate from a young age.
“I had the grooviest pair of black suede skates with orange and yellow detailing. They were a much-loved birthday gift”.
Being Catholic, most private
schools were all-girls, so things were awkward when Nettie got to grades eleven and twelve, which were co-ed.
“I came from a house of girls and had not had much contact with boys. I dreaded those first few weeks back at school as I didn’t know how to talk to them. I soon figured it out, though”.
Upon leaving school, Nettie recalls that she worked in a bakery in Margate owned by Mr Tucker, who was also the baker. He made the best caramel slices.
She also worked for a clothing manufacturer and had big dreams of going into fashion and design. Nettie was a finisher the first time around,

URANGAN State High School teacher, Steve Muir, is one of the very few selected from across the nation to become an Apple Learning Coach.
Steve will commence the very first Australian offering of this program in March of this year, making him one of the first in the country to assume the title of Apple Learning Coach. This professional learning program is designed for educators who coach teachers on how to get the most out of Apple technology in the classroom.
“I am just excited for the challenge that this program will bring. It will mean that I can collaborate with other experts across Australia to develop successful coaching practices to assist teachers embarking on their own digital capabilities and bring fresh, new ideas not only to my digital pedagogical practice but to my colleagues at USHS (Urangan State High School) and the wider school community,” said Mr Muir. Steve is a Digital Pedagogy Leader at Urangan State High School and is already a Certified Apple Teacher. He presents his colleagues at the school with a range of training and some of his most interesting work has been
around augmented reality, taking students through virtual tours of historic landmarks such as the Colosseum.
“Urangan State High has long had a reputation for innovation, and supporting students to excel through creating new ideas, new processes, and new skills” said Tony McCormack, Principal of Urangan State High School. “Over the past couple of years, our 1:1 iPad program has been a logical evolution of this with a wide array of creative and innovative learning opportunities being enabled by technology and the skill of our staff.”
The school introduced the 1:1
BYO iPad program in an effort to increase student engagement and learning through the use of digital pedagogy. The school has also invested in upskilling and training a group of teachers across all faculty areas on how to best use iPads as a teaching and learning tool in the classroom.
“To have one of our teachers recognised as a leader not only at Urangan, or on the Fraser Coast, but as one of the leading practitioners in the country is testament to the high quality opportunities that our students experience every minute of every day,” said Mr McCormack.

Local mother with unbreakable love
CHERYl Virgo is a mother of three and has a career as a Natural Therapist and Life Coach. Her three adult children lived a relatively normal life when her 23 year old daughter realised that her gender choice was to be a male.
“I was watching a TV documentary on transgender and asked my daughter to watch,” said Mrs Virgo. It was at that time when her child related to transgender and the journey to becoming a male became a reality.
Cheryl kept a daily journal over nine months to deal with the many emotions a mother would feel. Journaling helped Cheryl with her grief of losing a daughter but gaining a male in the family.
“I kept the journal for my own purposes, but it was not long after that I realised I was meant to share this experience with others.”
Her book ‘My Transgender Son’ has now been released to help other parents with similar experiences. Her aim is to give other parents hope and that this can be turned into a positive.
“When you first face this, you go into guilt mode; what did I do wrong as a parent?” said
Mrs Virgo. Over the years she has learnt how to let go of the grief and retain her relationship with her son. “Learn to love the spirit, not the body. There is a way through to stay connected.”
Cheryl admits to being a very spiritual person and this has helped her keep her belief.
“I had very little support when dealing with this, no
counselling or other services that had the experience for me to compare and share.”
Her passion is to now help other parents with transgender children and her relationship with her son has created stronger respect for each other.
“Let go of the old picture, create a new vision for the family.”
SWIMMING: Olympian
Isaac Cooper was the main drawcard at the Kick Swim Centre Open Day. He trained with the Fraser Coast Swim Club Senior and Development squads before sitting down for a questionand-answer session with the swimmers.
The former Bundaberg resident drove from the Sunshine Coast early in the morning to meet and chat with the Fraser Coast swimmers.
He had heard plenty of talent was coming out of the squad and wanted to check it out first-hand.
“After spending time here this morning, I can see that
they are true to their word,”
Cooper said.
“I came from a similar backstory to them, and potentially some of these swimmers could swim for Australia too,” he said.
The term Olympian hasn’t registered with Cooper yet, and he believes it hasn’t sunk in.
He is currently focused on training leading into the world championship trials in a few months.
“We have a few racing events in New South Wales and the Nationals to get ourselves race ready before. Hopefully, I will go to Japan for the Worlds,”
Cooper delivered a simple but powerful message to the
local swimmers.
“It is possible to get to the top if you want to be there. There is nothing in your way except for yourself. If you want it, you can do it, you have to commit to it, and that is often the hardest part,”
Fraser Coast Swim Club coach Liz Kopacz believes her swimmer received much from Isaac’s visit.
“They all look up to him as a role model, and for him to come and share his advice and experience is invaluable,” Kopacz said.
Visit their Facebook pages for details on the Fraser Coast Swim Club of the Kick Swim Centre.
HOCKEY: All that is old is new again, with the Bundaberg, Maryborough and Hervey Bay Hockey Associations agreeing to play in a combined hockey season in 2023.
Harking back to years gone by, the three associations will come together for one round of fixtures and a final before returning to their local competitions to finish their seasons.
Eight teams in the men’s
and eight in the women’s will compete, with the first matches scheduled for March 11, with the grand final to be played in June.
The last time the three associations combined was in 2016 for the then-named premier league.
It came about after Bundaberg approached Maryborough and Hervey Bay about combining, as players were getting sick of playing the same teams regularly.
The new competition is yet to be finalised, with a meeting of the three association presidents on Wednesday.
Hervey Bay Hockey president Phil Taylor believes the new competition will be exciting for hockey in the region.
“It will allow the local players to play against other teams and hopefully create some new interest for the sport in the region,” Taylor said.
