Welcome Welcome to the winter edition of

It has been a busy summer and autumn with lots of news about exciting projects across Hertsmere. We celebrated the centenary of Elstree Studios (see pages 14 & 15), which marked a proud moment for our borough’s world famous tv and film industry. We also welcomed the announcement of a new data centre for the area (see page 29). This major investment will provide job opportunities for years ahead, and boost our local economy. Both businesses were at our Generation Hertsmere event (see page 24), alongside over 60 organisations to meet with school children from across Hertsmere to discuss their future career opportunities in the borough.

On page 17 you will read about our new electric vehicle charging points, and having listened to your views, the plans to update Newberries Car Park (see page 29) so it is accessible for everyone and stays as a car park in the heart of Radlett. We also held a two minute silence at the Civic Offices to commemorate Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day (see pages 22 & 23). Finally, below we have given an update on the latest Local Government Reaorganisation as it approaches an important stage for our borough.

Festive fun is on the cards! Our annual seasonal card competition for youngsters aged 11 or below resulted in some fantastic designs, which made judging very difficult for the Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Alpha Bird Collins.

He picked three winning designs. In first place (gold certificate) was Minuthi Subasinghe Mudiyanselage (pictured below left with the Mayor), aged seven from St. Teresa Catholic Primary School, Borehamwood. Joint runners-up (silver certificates) were awarded to Sara Haczelska-Zub, aged ten, and Swasthi Menon, aged five (pictured below), both from Ladbrooke JMI School in Potters Bar. All three designs were reproduced by our graphic designer, replicated on our website and social media

channels. The winners each received 25 printed copies of their cards, a certificate and All4One gift cards. Minuthi’s winning design will be used as a printed card by the Mayor to send to our local partners, and as an e-card for staff and councillors. Winter wellbeing With the colder weather now upon us, what better time to focus on getting a bit more active to boost your health and wellbeing? Come and get involved in Back2Bowls and badminton Bowls and badminton are a perfect way to get moving and meet new people and they’re free to take part. Get yourself down to Aberford Community Centre in Borehamwood – includes free refreshments available at both sessions. With Back2Bowls there’s an outdoor bowling green and indoor mats. You can also take part in a variety of board games and arts and crafts. Everyone is welcome and there is no need to book – come and join us every Wednesday between 1pm and 3pm. We Move, She Moves Our award-winning activity programme for women and girls aged 16+ has classes including dance, aerobics, pilates, zumba, aqua zumba, golden dance, yoga and pound. wemoveshemoves.me.uk

Friday Night Project Taking place on a Friday evening from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at Hertswood Academy in Borehamwood, this free project is for young people aged 11 to 19 years. Swimming lessons for all ages with InspireAll InspireAll is a local charitable trust providing leisure facilities across Hertsmere. At three centres across Bushey, Potters Bar and Borehamwood, InspireAll follow the Swim England ‘Learn to Swim’ scheme, providing all aspects of swimming lessons, for children aged four months to adults. A range of lessons are provided including weekly lessons available during daytime, early evening or weekends. For those looking for lessons during school holidays, a range of crash courses are available, perfect for those wanting to improve their swimming skills.

The team also work in partnership with local schools to provide school swimming lessons during term time. Interested in weekly swimming lessons? Beryl bikes have travelled twice around the world! Since launching in 2022, Beryl has generated more than 40,000 sustainable journeys across nearly 83,190km. This has prevented three tonnes of harmful carbon emissions and led to over 10,000 hours of exercise for people. The scheme currently offers 45 bikes and 40 e-bikes, available to rent from 32 Beryl bays across Borehamwood and Bushey. Grab a bike today: • Pay As You Ride is best for single journeys or occasional rides and will cost users £1 unlocking fee and 5p per minute on pedal bikes or £1.50 unlocking fee and 14p per minute on e-bikes;

• Minute Bundles enable regular users to buy upfront and save money, starting at 100 minutes for £5; • Day Passes are suitable for people on long days out and offer unlimited riding over a 24-hour-period for £12 for pedal bikes only or £16 to include e-bikes. Check your collection calendar Bin collections take place every two weeks, and schedules vary across the borough. Please make sure you’re checking the correct calendar for your property. Our parks: a fresh look Our parks and open spaces are where families gather, children play, and neighbours connect. We’re committed to making them vibrant, welcoming, and full of life – and we’ve been busy delivering exciting improvements across the borough.

Composers Park The newly transformed Composers Park playground has officially reopened, unveiling a vibrant, inclusive, and adventure-packed play space designed with the community, for the community – thanks to your feedback! Here’s what’s waiting to be explored: • Wildlife-themed play panels, swings and springers • Revamped sports zone with new goals, rebound walls, basketball hoop, cricket wicket and fresh surfacing • Hideaway tree multi-play unit • Accessible spinner and trampoline • Agility trail and cableway

Aberford Park Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on improving Aberford Park, from

play areas and skate park facilities, to options for enhancing Tykes Water, known locally as ‘The Brook’. We’re currently going through over 12,000 individual responses and are now shaping an improvement plan based on your feedback. We’ll keep you updated!

Meadow Park Earlier this year, we asked how you’d like to complete the million pound investment in Meadow Park. Plans have been submitted for formal planning permission and include: • A new café • A tree-lined pedestrian avenue connecting Meadow Park to Brook Road • Additional trees throughout the car park • A dedicated entrance for football fans to ease match-day congestion

Plug in and power up New EV charging points at nine key sites across Borehamwood, Bushey, and Potters Bar, give drivers a quick and convenient way to top up on the go.

• More seating, bins, and CCTV to improve comfort, cleanliness and safety. These improvements build on recent enhancements including a splash zone opened in 2022, an inclusive toddler play area, activity space for older children, outdoor gym, electronic interactive play, and improved paths and landscaping.

With 74 chargers being installed in council car parks and leisure centres, it’s a major move towards a cleaner, greener Hertsmere. The new chargers cost 45p per kilowatt hour for AC charging and 55p for DC charging, offering a straightforward, pay-as-you-go service, and we have a special offer running until the New Year. DAVE ARMITAGE If you’ve ever visited the Elstree and Borehamwood Museum, you’ve likely been greeted by Dave Armitage, Museum Manager and long-time volunteer, whose passion for local history has helped shape the museum into what it is today.

After I retired in 2004, I A started visiting the old museum on Drayton Road. One day the then curator asked if I’d like to help out behind the desk for a couple of hours, so I did! When the museum later moved to its new home, many volunteers couldn’t continue. I thought, “Am I going to take this on?” and of course, I did. Having lived in Borehamwood most my life, I didn’t want our local history to be lost – so, with the help of Ruth Stratton from the council, we created the new museum.

Most of the work happens in our homes and garages before we bring it all in about 10 days before opening – it’s quite the challenge!

We remember In November, both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day were commemorated across the country and many parts of the world.

We held our own service at the Civic Offices led by the Mayor of Hertsmere Cllr Alpha Bird Collins, which included raising the Armistice Day flag. He was

joined by a number of guests, including members from our local Royal British Legion in Borehamwood. The ceremony gave us the opportunity to show

that we will never forget those who gave up their lives so that we can all enjoy the freedoms that we take for granted today.

We have appointed a nominated representative to the Hertfordshire Armed Forces Covenant Board (HAFCB). Cllr Linda Smith, elected member for Borehamwood Cowley Hill ward, will help to champion causes for the Armed Forces within Hertsmere and beyond.

Hertfordshire Heroes is the name used to promote the HAFCB who work in partnership to deliver the Armed Forces Covenant on a local level. It brings together business, military organisations,

charities, NHS and local authorities in a shared commitment to ensure that those who serve and have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Careers for the next generation! Building on the success of last year’s Generation Hertsmere, the council teamed up once again with the Hertfordshire Careers Hub (Hertfordshire Futures) to host another inspiring event this November. The day shone a spotlight on the many exciting career opportunities available in Hertsmere – both now and in the near future – giving young people the chance to connect directly with local employers. The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Alpha Bird Collins, the Leader of the Council, Cllr Jeremy Newmark, and Gareth Dace, Head of

Programmes and Policy at Hertfordshire Futures, who praised the event’s role in helping young residents take their first steps toward rewarding careers. Set up as a lively careers fair, the event brought together a fantastic mix of employers; 66 in all – ready to share their experiences and discuss the variety of roles on offer. It gave approximately 500 students the chance to have real conversations with local professionals, discover new industries, and explore the many exciting opportunities right on their doorstep.

Bushey’s hidden gem Bushey Museum and Art Gallery has been named a VisitEngland ‘Hidden Gem’. Tucked in the heart of Bushey, the museum has long been a quiet treasure for lovers of art, culture and local history. The VisitEngland assessment, carried out earlier this year, examined every aspect of the visitor experience—from arrival and ambience to exhibitions, facilities, staff engagement and overall atmosphere. Alongside its changing exhibitions, the museum houses a nationally significant

collection dedicated to Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA and his world-renowned Art School, which once drew students from across the globe. Visitors can also explore the Lucy Kemp-Welch Memorial Trust Collection – featuring her acclaimed equine paintings – as well as works from the celebrated Monro Circle of artists. The changing shape of local government in Hertfordshire Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) is all about looking at how councils can work better together to provide the services that matter most to our communities. It’s a once-in-ageneration chance to build a system that’s more connected to local people, financially sustainable, and ready to face future challenges. At the end of November, all 11 councils in our area submitted their final proposals to the government, setting out their ideas for how local

democracy could be shaped in the years ahead. The government will now review these proposals and is expected to announce its decision in summer 2026. You can read our submitted proposal and what LGR means for Hertsmere by visiting hertsmere.gov.uk/LGR

Hertsmere’s first-ever 100% affordable housing development A total of 186 brand-new homes will be built at Lyndhurst Farm in Borehamwood, to provide high-quality housing for local people, with a mix of social rent, affordable rent, and shared ownership. The development also brings fantastic community

benefits, including: • A new community hub for residents and local groups • Modern allotments with improved facilities • A £550,000 boost to local transport, cycleways, and pedestrian links

Thanks to a grant from Homes England, and delivered by Thrive Homes, the project moved from 80% to 100% affordable. Together, we’re building more than homes – we’re building a community.

UK Screen Investment Summit Cllr Jeremy Newmark represented the council at the inaugural UK Screen Investment Summit at BAFTA in November, where industry leaders were discussing the future of the UK film industry. Cllr Newmark highlighted Hertsmere’s role in the national screen industry, bringing together studios, skills and innovation and investment.

Newberries Car Park Newberries Car Park in Radlett will stay and be improved following your feedback, which played a vital role in shaping the council’s decision. We will be looking at better lighting, resurfacing the ground and

changing the layout to make it more accessible and more welcoming for everyone. We are also exploring electric charging points in the car park as part of our commitment to a cleaner, greener Hertsmere.

Data Centre announced Equinix has announced plans for a new data centre to be built in Hertsmere. This is a major investment that will bring hundreds of new job opportunities to the borough, and boost our local economy.

The company are known for building energy efficient and environmentally friendly sites, and we will be updating you as their work gets underway.
