A Message from the President I should like to welcome all members and guests to Leverstock Green Cricket Club during the 2009 season.

Last season, our Centenary, was truly memorable. The First XI secured back-toback Championships and has now reached the dizzy height of Division One in the Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League.

Many congratulations go to the skipper, David Tyson, and the First Team.

The Seconds return to Division 6 where, it is to be hoped, we shall be successful and enjoy the new season. The Third Eleven also completed back-to-back promotions and again congratulations and best wishes go to Mike Parkes and his team. The Fourths also had a highly satisfactory season establishing a stable foundation and some encouraging victories in Division Twelve. For good measure, the Sunday Firsts also gained another well-deserved promotion.

The Centenary Cricket Match on 25 May was marred by monsoonal weather. How we played a 20 over game was quite miraculous! However, it was wonderful to meet again so many ex-players and members, who came along to honour the Club.

Cricket Week was the highlight of the season. It was by far the warmest and sunniest week of the Summer and how we enjoyed and celebrated the gorgeous weather! Good matches were played and large crowds turned up to watch. It was a privilege to be able to welcome the MCC to Leverstock Green as well as a former England captain, Mike Gatting.

The rest of the Year went well with valuable contributions from our social members, who supported the club strongly and also raised substantial sums of money for charity.

One of the highlights of the Centenary Year was the Annual Dinner Dance. It was great to be able to celebrate the distinctive and highly successful year of 2008 and to look forward to the next one hundred years. The Club paid its respects to Ian Lloyd, a long-term member, who passed away during the year

and we also caught up again with other former legends of the Club, such as John Carson, Frank Howard, John Ilott, Garth Hill and may more. It was also fitting that an excellent Centenary DVD was produced by Nick Taylor and Pamela, which was a wonderful record of a never-to-be-forgotten year.

A Message from the Club Captain Welcome all to the first season of our second centenary of cricket in Leverstock Green. We can all be proud of our club and of what it achieved in 2008.

To me the highlight of last year was The Centenary Day in May along with Cricket week. I am sure that these days will go down in Club history and will long be remembered by all who were there.

The first team had an excellent season winning the Division 2 title with captain David Tyson winning the league bowling award.

The Sunday and midweek side under Dayle Littlejohn also saw success winning the Watford Observer plate and the Sunday League. I would like to wish new captain Brad Klosterman and the team all the best for 2009 and hopefully we can achieve a third consecutive promotion.

Once again despite the good work of Keith Glasscoe and all the players, the second team struggled in Division 5. Unfortunately their best endeavours could not avert relegation. I am sure however that under new captain Richard Walker the future looks good and I am hopeful that they will soon be back where they belong.

The third team also secured promotion under the excellent stewardship of Mike Parkes. The settled side only lost one game all season, a record that they can be proud of. Mike and the team can hopefully repeat this performance in 2009.

The fourth team under a selection of skippers had a mixed year. The overall benefits to the club however with new talent coming through, far outways their league position. I hope this development will continue during 2009 and we will see a future so bright the shades may have to come on.

The junior section under the leadership of Brad Klosterman, along with the assistance of Neil Fleming and Dave Tyson, is also something this club should be proud of. The Ashes day and junior presentation day were once again a great success.

I would also like to thank all those involved outside of actually

playing - the scorers, the umpires, the tea ladies and not forgetting the forgiving partners. In addition the support from the non-playing members is immeasurable and goes a long way to achieving the success of the club.

With the continual growth of the club and the commitment put in by many, I am convinced that this great game and the social aspects of the club will continue to grow throughout the next 100 years.

On a personal note can I say how proud I am to be your Club Captain and how much I am looking forward to the year ahead.

LGCC 1st XI - Division Two Champions 2008

The Centenary Year When any organisation or individual reaches a 100 year birthday, it is of course a cause for celebration – and often serious reflection. 2008 was the year that Leverstock Green Cricket Club reached that landmark, and it is fair to say both celebration and reflection were much in evidence.

More importantly perhaps, the club also saw its Centenary as a stepping stone to the continued growth and development of the club. Whilst the theme of the Centenary recognised the history and past membership and friends, there was also the satisfaction in involving the full junior talent within the club in those celebrations.

So it is reasonable to suggest the club has an encouraging future, building on the successes of 2007 and 2008 and bringing through the next generation. This is what has happened over the last 25 years. A substantial number of high quality cricketers in the senior teams began life in the colts and junior sides.

Other factors will help the club maintain its quality and grow in strength. Good playing conditions and a clubhouse to be proud of, offer the environment and social surroundings for that growth. A strong and vibrant social membership, the envy of many bigger clubs, is a major element in the financial stability so necessary to ensure a stable base upon which to develop.

For the Centenary itself, the English club cricketers’ indomitable spirit shone through, as the Centenary Match in late May was close to being flooded out. But, by 4pm, following sterling efforts from everyone, a shortened match took place. Contested by playing members representing Past and Present and watched by a truly wonderful turnout of ex-members, stretching back to the 1950s, the weather was irrelevant and the camaraderie and club spirit was a joy to behold.

The club’s efforts that day were rewarded with wall to wall sunshine for the Centenary cricket week in late July. This was a different celebration, with old adversaries but good friends, with whom we have been engaged in competition for so many years – and a Friday match graced by Mike Gatting and Mark Ilott.

The week had begun with the Junior Ashes Day against our good friends from St Albans. The earlier reference to the next generation of LGCC was dramatically demonstrated with the quality of talent on display. The legacy of those so heavily involved in the development of junior cricket looks assured.

It is probably accepted that Leverstock Green will never hold pole position in Hemel Hempstead – that will doubtless always be the prerogative of the “Town” side. Nevertheless this apparent secondary role is in no way derogatory and indeed, the club’s perceived village status and atmosphere is in many ways a bonus. It has created a distinct identity in the area, a sense of belonging, which can and often is commented upon.

So there it is…….Leverstock Green Cricket Club can look back on their 100 year history with pride and thanks to those stalwarts of yesteryear who “had the dream”. It is surely not too extreme to suggest that they might be looking down from that great pavilion in the sky and nodding their approval.

As LGCC begins the long road to its bicentenary(!) in 2108, those playing now and those to come have been charged with continuing that successful legacy…...there should be no doubt they will.

Major Planned Events for 2009 After a successful centenary year it is time to welcome in 2009.

We have planned some exciting social events for the year and hope to raise interest from all members of the club.

LGCC Ashes 2009 The 2008 LGCC Ashes kicked off cricket week in our centennial year and was a great success. St Albans finished up winning the event 3-2 so we hope to reverse the result this year.

This year’s event will be held on Sunday 12th July and will again see 5 matches deciding the trophy. We will also see some new activities this year replacing the double wicket competition. We will still see the children team up with their parent/relative for the title of best in their age group. The new events will be sure to entertain throughout the day. St Albans will again be returning to continue the battle for the trophy. I would like to thank all those that help make it a successful day but special thanks must go to Len and Jan who work tirelessly feeding us all from breakfast through to after the final match.

Leverstock Green Junior Cricket 2008 was another successful year for Leverstock Green in both Junior and Senior cricket. In the juniors, the Under 11s led the way, finishing runners-up in the North West League. The remaining 5 teams can also be proud of their efforts with 4 of these finishing in third position of their respective leagues.

The improvement in our juniors shone through last year as many of our past colts helped in the promotion of our Third and Fourth teams. I look forward to seeing them progress even further and into our First and Second XI in the coming years.

As a club we can be proud of what we have achieved in the development of our junior cricketers. In the 13 and over age groups most of our juniors have been with us from their initial playing days. This can be accredited to the way we coach and run our teams. It is pleasing to see that the majority carry on playing in their teenage years and beyond when there are so many other sports and distractions to take them on a different path. In saying this, we are seeing a slight deficiency in numbers in the 12 and under age groups, so this is an area in which we will be looking to recruit and then develop over the coming year.

Under 7’s were added to our list of squads in 2008 and this was a pleasing success. To keep our club amongst the leaders in junior cricket, we require coaches, assistants and scorers as well as our players. We are currently down to three so if you would like to get involved please email me juniors@lgcc.org.uk.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Congratulations to all those who won individual awards last season. Players that didn’t walk away with an award can be equally proud of their efforts in helping their respective teams be competitive throughout the season. Who knows, there is always this year!

2009 will again see the Club field 6 teams and break new ground with a team in an Under 16 League. This season will see us running teams in Under 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 and Under 16.

We have seen an unprecedented number of colts making it through to the district and area training squads. Leverstock Green is represented in Under 11’s – Daniel Lake (Area), Lewis Glasscoe and Jamie Revell (District) – Under 12’s - Johnny Pitts (Area) - Under 13’s – Rory Fleming, George McCausland and Sam Revell (District) and Under 15 – Tom Callingham, Haris Khan, Matthew Lake, Chris Pearson, Luke Tyson, Joe Watkins and Luke Weston (District). A number of these have been selected in the final squads to compete in the May festival.

We will be hosting a number of District and Area matches this year so come along and support your mates or just come and enjoy some quality cricket.

The Under 7’s format was introduced last year and this will be extended to include Under 8’s in 2009. This will help the 8 year olds prepare for the transition to Under 10 league cricket in 2010. Due to the varying abilities within the group these numbers will again be limited to 16.

Finally, I would like to thank Dave Tyson and Neil Fleming along with all the parents that are there supporting every game.

Without these people the juniors wouldn’t be where they are today.

Short History of Leverstock Green Cricket Club The game of cricket was first played on a regular basis in Leverstock Green during the 1920’s, though its formation can be traced back to 1908. Matches were played on farmland off Pancake Lane for some years, then, when the land was needed, the Club moved a short distance to Cherry Tree Lane.

The team, consisting mainly of members of LGCC on tour in 1988 the village, played regular Saturday matches until the end of the 1939 season, when, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, it was reluctantly forced to disband.

It was not until 1958, almost twenty years later, that several players from those early days, together with local residents both old and new, managed to persuade the authorities to allow the ground as we know it today to be used as a cricket pitch. This then became the new home of Leverstock Green Cricket Club.

Only one eleven played at this time, with a fixture list for both Saturday and Sunday games.

In 1964 a second eleven was formed and over the years increasing membership enabled the club to field three regular elevens within the Hertfordshire Cricket League.

A regular fourth XI was formed in 2005 and joined Division Thirteen of the Herts League two years later.

The Club can also boast successful junior sides. As the club moved into the new millennium, juniors as young as seven were encouraged to join in. Through the dedication and hard work of a number of senior members and players, the Club currently runs six junior sides across five age groups.

Having enjoyed a wonderfully successful Centenary Year both on and off the field the whole Club can be proud of what we have achieved. With a thriving social membership and excellent facilities we have come a long way from the early days in Pancake Lane!

Leverstock Green Cycling Team 2009 Land's End to John O'Groats (LeJog) . . . We did It . . . 1001 miles . . . 14 days . . . and thanks to all of your generosity we raised ÂŁ7,069.15 for the Hospice of St Francis, Berkhamsted.

Myself, Kim Darker, Kevin Seggery, Steve Wright, Noel Mahon, Richard Stevens and Ian Threlfall undertook the challenge and Gavin Smith, who joined us on route in Edinburgh, did extremely well, as, due to other commitments, he could not put in a massive amount of training. Keeping up with seven guys who had been cycling on average 70 miles a day for the last 11 days was a tough call as you can imagine.

Many thanks to Jon Brown for driving the "Magnificent 7" support RV for the first 4 days but unfortunately Jon had a slight mishap and could not support us when we moved further up the country, but we also had Ed "Sherpa" Bates' support throughout the duration of the ride and Ed's support was called upon a few times, especially on one extremely wet day in Cumbria, when a change of clothes was required and a good supply of wine gums was at hand!

This year it's back to normality as we are riding from London to Brighton in June and once again look forward to your continued sponsorship for the ride.

We have raised over ÂŁ35,000 for the British Heart Foundation over the last 14 years and we hope to push that to over ÂŁ37,000 in 2009.

Training started in March and will continue up to the ride on June 21st.

Club Rules 1. Name - The Club shall be called Leverstock Green Cricket Club and its Headquarters shall be the Club Pavilion, Leverstock Green, Hemel Hempstead, Herts. HP3 8LJ. 2. Objects - The object of the Club shall be to provide for its members the facilities necessary to participate in, foster and promote the amateur game of cricket. The Management Committee may provide such other sports, social and recreational pursuits which it considers to be in the best interests of the Club.

3. Membership – Membership of the Club shall be open to all persons, irrespective of age, sex or disability except as a necessary consequence of the requirements of cricket as a particular sport and irrespective of ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion or beliefs.

The Club aims to be a child-friendly club and to provide a safe and effective environment for young players. To this end the Club has adopted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Policy "Safe Hands - Welfare of Young People in Cricket."

Application for membership of the Club is subject to the completion of an application form and the prospective member (whether for playing or non-playing membership) must be proposed and seconded by other Club members in accordance with clauses 3a(iii) or 3a(iv) below. The membership secretary shall present the completed application form at a meeting of the management committee for its approval. The management committee will accept the new member on the basis of a simple majority.

Persons may not be admitted to membership, without an interval of at least two days between the nomination, or application for membership and their admission, nor may persons becoming members without prior nomination or application be admitted to the privileges of membership without an interval of at least two days between their becoming members and their admission.

Until the approval process is complete, the prospective new member will remain as a guest subject to the conditions of clause 13.

The Club may refuse membership or expel from membership only for good and sufficient cause, such as conduct or character likely to bring the Club or sport into disrepute. Appeal against such a decision may be made to the Club’s members and decided by a majority vote at an Extraordinary General Meeting in accordance with clause 9. Such an appeal can only be lodged after the procedures set out in clause 6(c) have been completed.

Membership of the club shall consist of the following categories:a) FULL MEMBERS Full Members shall have the right to vote at General Meetings and be nominated for election to the Management Committee. The category is divided into the following classes:i) Life Vice-Presidents shall be nominated by the Management Committee in recognition of exemplary or exceptional service to the Club and elected by a two-thirds majority at a General Meeting. Elections shall be for life. ii) Vice-Presidents shall be nominated by the Management Committee in recognition of the hard-work they have done for the Club and elected at a General Meeting by a twothirds majority. The term of office will be for 3 years in the first instance. iii) Playing Members shall be those members who make themselves available for selection in the Club senior teams. They shall be proposed by a Playing Member and seconded by a member of the Cricket Committee. iv) Non-Playing Members shall be proposed by a full member and seconded by a member of the Management Committee. v) Family Membership is available to those members who have one or more children playing for junior teams within the Club. Adult members of this category will have the same rights as non-playing members, but family membership ceases when the junior member no longer plays for the Club or becomes ineligible through age. b) JUNIOR PLAYING MEMBERS shall be playing members who are eligible to play junior cricket.

c) ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP is available for those members who have a current or past connection with the club and who currently live further than 50 miles from the club. d) PARTNER MEMBERS shall be anyone who belongs to a Full Member's family and is nominated to and accepted by the Management Committee. e) Members of visiting teams and their supporters will be Temporary Members from their arrival on the day of the match until close of business.

4. Subscription a) The annual subscription payable to the Club by each class of member shall be fixed each year at the Annual General Meeting or at an Extraordinary General Meeting called for the purpose. b) The subscription rates thus approved shall be published each year in the Club handbook. c) The subscription year shall be from 1 May to 30 April. d) Any member whose subscription remains unpaid at 31 May will forfeit his/her privileges of membership i.e. a Playing Member may not be selected to play cricket nor use the Clubhouse; a Non-Playing Member may not use the Clubhouse. Before having these privileges restored the member must pay an increased subscription to be decided under paragraph 4(a) If by 30 June this increased subscription is not paid then the Committee may terminate membership. e) The Management Committee shall have discretion to reduce the initial subscription for part of a year where they consider circumstances warrant it. f) Full Members who are still in full-time education will pay a reduced subscription. g) Life Vice-Presidents will not be required to pay a subscription but will be expected to pay a suitable annual donation. Vice-Presidents will pay a normal full-member's subscription.

5. Management of the Club a) Management of the Club shall be through elected officers and co-opted members who shall be formed into the structure defined below:i) Management Committee Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Club Captain, Bar Chairman, Events Co-ordinator, Pavilion Services Manager, Marketing and Income Development Officer, plus as many members of the Cricket Committee as necessary to ensure that more than 50% of the Management Committee are currently fully paid-up playing members (at the discretion of the Cricket Committee). Five members will constitute a quorum. ii) Sub-Committees a) CRICKET - Club Captain, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th XI Captains (or their nominees), Junior Section Manager (or nominee), and Fixture Secretary. b) BAR - Bar Chairman, Treasurer and co-opted members as required. c) SOCIAL - Events Co-ordinator and co-opted members as required. d) The Management Committee may establish temporary sub-committees, at its discretion, to carry out specific tasks. e) Trustees - minimum two preferably three officers of the Club. They shall be legally considered to represent the Club in cases of: i) Claims for indemnity from Club members. ii) Action against the Club in cases of law contravention. f) Only full playing members may vote in the election of the Club Captain, Captains and Vice Captains, the Fixture Secretary and Team Secretary. All retiring members of the Management Committee and sub-Committees shall be eligible for re-election. g) The President shall be elected for a three year period. The outgoing President shall be eligible for re-election. h) The officers to be elected at the Annual General Meeting are as follows:- Chairman, Secretary, Bar Chairman, Membership Secretary, Pavilion Services Manager, Events Coordinator, Treasurer, Marketing and Income Development Officer, Club Captain, Team Captains and Vice-Captains, Fixture Secretary and Team Secretary.

i) If any election should end in a tie, a second ballot will be held. If there is still a tie, the election will be decided by the drawing of lots.

6. Duties and Responsibilities of the Management Committee a) The property and assets of the Club shall be vested in the Management Committee. b) The power to admit new members duly proposed and seconded shall be vested in the Management Committee whose decision shall be final. c) The Management Committee shall have the power to discipline any member whose conduct is deemed to be contrary to the best interests of the Club. Following the receipt of a written report of such conduct, the Club Chairman shall appoint a sub-committee made up of himself and two other Full Members; this sub-committee shall investigate the matter and decide upon its disposal. The sub-committee's decision shall be final except that, in the case of a suspension or expulsion, the member shall have the right of appeal to the full Management Committee. d) The Management Committee shall have the power to fill such vacancies as may arise in its own constitution between Annual General Meetings. It shall also have the power to declare a vacancy should a member of the Committee be absent from three consecutive meetings without explanation deemed to be satisfactory. e) The Management Committee shall meet at least nine times per year and shall cause a record to be kept of all proceedings. f) The Management Committee shall ensure that a current register of all members is kept and made available within the Clubhouse. g) The Management Committee shall take whatever measures it sees fit to restrict entry to the pavilion on any occasion when there is a danger of overcrowding.

7. Finance a) The club is a non-profit making organisation. Any surplus income or gains are reinvested in the Club. Surpluses or assets cannot be distributed to members or third parties. b) The collection and disbursement of all Club funds shall be the responsibility of the Management Committee who shall ensure that proper books of account are kept by the Treasurer. c) The accounts of the Club shall be audited yearly and a report by the Auditor submitted to the Annual General Meeting. d) Official receipts for all monies received shall be signed by the Treasurer who shall report on the Finances of the Club to each meeting of the Management Committee. e) The Management Committee shall authorize cheques to be signed by any two of the Chairman, the Secretary and the Treasurer. f) No member shall, except for services rendered at the request of the Management Committee, receive any payment or emoluments from the funds or transactions of the Club. g) The Club shall not be held responsible for any debts other than those incurred with the prior knowledge and approval of the Management Committee.

8. Annual General Meeting a) The Annual General Meeting shall be held on the first Monday of December in each year. The Secretary shall give not less than twenty-one clear days' notice of such meeting to all members. b) The meeting shall receive a financial statement for the preceding financial year and the report of the Management Committee. c) The meeting shall elect the Management Committee and appoint an Honorary Auditor, or Auditors. d) The newly elected Management Committee shall assume office at the end of the Annual General Meeting. e) Only Full Members may vote at General Meetings. Associate Members, Junior Members and Partner Members may speak at the meetings but may not vote. f) The proceedings of the Annual General Meeting shall be duly minuted.

9. Extraordinary General Meeting a) An extraordinary General Meeting may be convened by the Management Committee or may be convened by the membership upon the written request of not less than 35 members. b) The Secretary shall give seven clear days' notice of such meeting to all members.

The specific purpose of the meeting shall be stated and no other business shall be transacted. c) The provision of sections (e) and (f) of Rule 9 shall apply to an Extraordinary General Meeting.

10. Alteration to Rules a) Alteration to the Rules of the Club shall be made only at an Annual General Meeting, or at an Extraordinary General Meeting called for the purpose, and only if supported by two-thirds of the members present and voting at such meeting.

11. Club Hours The hours during which the Club may remain open shall be decided by the Management Committee.

12. Bar Rules a) The permitted hours for the supply of intoxicating liquor shall be: Monday to Saturday 11am - 11pm Sunday, Christmas Day and Good Friday Noon - 3 00pm and 7 00pm - 10 30pm. b) No person below the age of 18 shall be permitted to purchase or consume intoxicating liquor upon Club premises. c) Gambling and games of chance are not permitted except those played for small stakes and allowed within the General Licensing Laws. d) Persons under the age of 18, who are junior playing members or sons or daughters of a member, will be permitted to enter the Club during licensing hours but may be asked to leave after 9 30 pm if unaccompanied by an adult who will accept responsibility for them.

13. Visitors a) Members may introduce visitors to the Club subject to regulations of the Management Committee which shall be in accordance with the licensing laws. b) Every visitor shall be the guest of, and shall be accompanied by, the member introducing him or her. c) Members will be held responsible for the proper behaviour of their guests. d) A guest may be introduced into the Club on not more than six occasions during the year. This restriction shall not apply to members' partners. A full member shall not be allowed to introduce more than four guests at any one time. e) Persons under 18 are permitted to introduce only one guest.

A signing-in book shall be kept for guests who must be signed in by the accompanying member.

14. Dissolution a) The members may vote to wind up the Club if not less than three quarters of those present and voting support that proposal at a properly convened general meeting. b) The Committee will then be responsible for the orderly winding up of the Club’s affairs. c) After settling all liabilities of the Club, the Committee shall dispose of the net assets remaining to one or more of the following: i) to another Club with similar sports purposes which is a registered charity and/or to another Club with similar sports purposes which is a registered Community Amateur Sports Club and/or ii) to the Club’s governing body for use by them for related community sports.

15. Other Business Any matters not governed by the foregoing Rules shall be dealt with by The Management Committee whose decision shall be final and binding.
