UPHOLSTERY CARE
General guidelines:
- To minimise fading and wear, do not expose upholstered furniture to direct sunlight, heat sources and moisture.
- Vacuum upholstery periodically using the appropriate attachments to remove dust and debris.
- Fabric pilling will naturally occur over time. Use a fabric shaver occasionally to remove pills; this process will slow down as loose fibres are eliminated.
- For deep cleaning, we recommend making use of a professional upholstery cleaning service.
- If you choose to use an upholstery cleaning appliance, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Do not over-saturate the fabric. Always test the product on a hidden area first to check for colourfastness and compatibility.
- When diluting cleaning solutions, use distilled water and apply sparingly to prevent excess moisture.
- For spot cleaning, blot gently with an absorbent, undyed cloth – do not rub. Work from the outer edge of the stain towards the centre to avoid creating rings.
- Avoid hard-bristled brushes and aggressive scrubbing, as these can damage the fibres.
PERFORMANCE FABRICS
High-performance textiles, such as those in the Hertex Carefree range, are designed with protective features that make stain removal easier and, in some cases, offer resistance to fire and bacteria. It is essential to attend to spills promptly.
Cleaning steps:
1. Remove excess dirt or liquid with a piece of paper towel. If the stain has already dried, gently brush off any excess residue.
2. Using a spray bottle, dampen the stain with clean water and rub gently with a soft cloth to remove it.
3. Pat dry with a clean piece of paper towel.
FOR MORE STUBBORN STAINS LIKE TOMATO SAUCE, CHOCOLATE, FRUIT OR INK:
1. Remove excess dirt or liquid with a piece of paper towel. If the stain has already dried, gently brush off any excess residue.
2. Using a spray bottle, dampen the stain with clean water.
3. Apply a small amount of mild soap and rub gently with a soft cloth.
4. Using a spray bottle, apply a small amount of clean water to dilute the foam.
5. Pat dry with a piece of paper towel and air-dry.
CAUTION
Only use mild, colourless detergent and a soft cloth. We recommend using pure glycerine soap and a microfibre cloth.
SPECIALITY MATERIALS
Leather
- Dust leather surfaces with a dry cloth regularly.
- For light cleaning, wipe with an undyed cloth dampened with distilled water to restore moisture.
- For thorough care, use a wax-free leather cleaner and conditioner.
- Blot oil-based spills immediately with a clean, soft cloth.
- For other liquid spills, use mild soap and distilled water, then wipe with a damp cloth and allow to air-dry. Avoid scrubbing.
- Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, ammonia, silicone-based products or solvents.
- Never apply leather cleaners or conditioners to suede, nubuck or napped finishes.
Vinyl
- Clean with mild soap and water, then dry immediately.
- Avoid over-saturating vinyl, and never use solvents or leather care products.
WOOD AND WICKER
Sealed wood
- Clean with mild soap, water and a soft cloth; dry immediately.
- Dust occasionally with a soft cloth and non-wax polish.
- Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners or ammonia-based products.
- Wipe spills promptly to prevent moisture damage.
- Use coasters, trivets and felt pads to protect surfaces. Never place hot items directly on wood.
- Lift furniture when moving it – do not drag it.
- Keep furniture level to prevent warping, and avoid direct exposure to sunlight or heat.
Laminate / veneer
- Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
Raw wood
- Cover when not in use. Do not expose to water or harsh chemicals. Seal if necessary.
Rattan and wicker
- Spot-clean with a damp cloth and dust occasionally with a soft cloth.
- Vacuum to remove loose dirt.
- Do not stand on woven seats.
METAL
- Dust regularly with a soft cloth.
- Wipe spills immediately and avoid excessive moisture.
- Do not use ammonia, siliconebased products or abrasive cleaners.
- Protect surfaces with coasters and trivets; avoid placing hot items directly on metal.
STONE
- Clean with mild soap and water, then dry with a soft cloth.
- Use stone-specific cleaners occasionally, following instructions carefully.
- Avoid acidic products such as vinegar or lemon-based cleaners.
- Protect surfaces with mats and coasters to prevent scratches and stains.
