Welcome back to all the students of FIA. Also, for the new students, welcome to the family and we wish you an amazing college life.

Since it is the beginning of new semester, HERO is back with another fun contents. We all know that Malang is called a tourism city for its beautiful nature and many tourist attractions that thrill us to visit this beautiful city. So in this August edition of HERO, we will give you information about tourist attractions in Malang and places you can visit with your partner, friends, or family.

Colleges can be stressful sometimes-or even always LOL. Taking a day off maybe can restore your energy, but traveling can refresh your soul, plus it gives you amazing memories. We study to make a better future for our world, but through traveling you can also discover that our earth needs aid from all of the global warming and environmental problems that happen, and it is in addition to our responsibility to preserve our earth, our future.

1. Mount Bromo Mount Bromo is the most popular and most visited tourist attraction in East Java. The visitors of Mount Bromo not only come from East Java, but also from many faraway places such as Jakarta. Mount Bromo is an active volcano located in four regions, namely Malang, Pasuruan, Probolinggo and Lumajang. The most desirable activities at Mount Bromo are enjoying the view of sunrise, mountain climbing, horse riding, and walking through the desert of Mount Bromo.

3. Balekambang Beach Located on the south side of East Java province, Balekambang Beach is one of the tourist attractions in East Java, which is famous for its beautiful beach and temple located on an rocky Island in the seashore of Balekambang.

Balekambang beach is only about 45 KM from the city of Malang. Because of that, Balekambang Beach has become a favorite tourist spot for residents from Malang City and its surroundings. 4. Waterfall of Coban Rondo Coban Rondo is a waterfall located in Pujon which has 84 meters height and located circa 1135 meters above the sea level.

Coban Rondo is about 25 KM from the city of Malang, hence this attraction is one of the most popular natural attractions for residents of Malang City and its surroundings area. The entrance ticket to this place is only IDR 10.000 each.

6. Sendang Biru Beach and Sempu Island Sendang Biru is a beach located 30 KM to thesouth of Malang City.

Sendang BiruBeach is a beautiful beach which hasregularwaves and rather calmcurrents than other beaches on the southern coast of Java Island. The waves and currents in this beachare not as big as other beaches because there is an island near the coast, namely Sempu Island. You can go to the Sempu Iland using fisherman’s boat from Sendang BiruBeach.But now, Sempu Island has been closed for tourism and used as a sanctuary.

Culture

Beauty of Malang’s Art Mask of Malang Mask (topeng) as a product of fine arts is not only used as decoration, but also as the equipment of dance and theatre in some performances. In Malang, to be exact in the Kedung Monggo village, Pakisaji sub-district and in the Jabung village, Tumpang subdistrict, lots of masks are made to be used for the performance of an opera or “wayang topeng”.

Topeng Malang (Traditional Mask of Malang) has special characteristics, such as its thick material from randu wood (capok tree) or “cangkring”, which is rather dark in colour, with a carving on its bulging forehead and styled with a square chin and high cheek-bones. Some kind of masks need some rituals to make the carved mask has a supranatural power.

Decoratively, Topeng Malang is unique. They are different from any other mask art found in Java.

There are five typical colours that is used to decorate the mask. The red colour symbolizes courage, the black colour symbolizes determined ambitions, the yellow colour symbolizes wisdom, the white colour indicates purified character and the green colour indicates peace.

Malang Mask Dance Malang is famous for its dances.

The topeng performance has a strong dramatic value and great performance pattern while the music has special characteristics.

The carved mask usually made to be used in an opera or “wayang topeng”. What is interesting about the mask dance is that all the dancers are representing some characters by wearing masks.

The art of Mask Dance from Malang, East Java, is a result of culture combination, including culture from Central Java, West Java and East Java (Balambangan and Osing). Because of that, the roots of the dance movement contain dynamic wealth ellements and ethnic music from Java, Madura and Bali. Nevertheless, the mask dance is estimated to have appeared in the early 20‘s and evolved during the war for independence. This dance is a representation of human feelings or conditions such as crying, laughing, sad, confused, and so on. This dance is usually

displayed in the fragmentation of local folk tales and stories about different things, especially stories about banner.

Walikan Language Walikan language is created

by Indonesian Patriot called Gerilya Rakyat Kota (GRK). This special language is considered as important language in warfare to ensure the confidentiality, effectiveness of communication among militants as well as identification for comrades or adversaries.

In the colonial era, there are so many Dutch militants who become spies in Malang area. These spies are able to communicate using local language so that they can get the information easily from GRK. At that time, a patriot called Suyudi Raharno had an idea for making a new language between Malang

militants. Then, that language became their identities. Not only that, it maintans the information security. This language only had one characteristic in pronunciation and writing, it is reversing the words’ alphabet sequences.

Now, that language is known as walikan language. For example: Ayo arek malang kabeh (javanese) becomes Ayo kera ngalam hebak (walikan language)

Innovation “Water Banking Movement”, Transforming Glintung Go Green from Flood Risk Area

Housing improvement by reducing slum areas and creating a sustainable environment are one of the main issues and missions in the Medium Term City Development Planning (Regional Regulation of Malang Municipal No. 7 Year 2014). Also, part of the main policy framework referred to by this program is Ministry of Environmental Regulation Number 19/2012 about the Climate Kampong Program.

Parties and Partners to the Initia tive

This socio-ecology project involved many stakeholders. The most important part of a movement, surely, is the residents of Glintung Go Green. Other parties and partners including Malang City Government who helped direct the initial idea of Glintung Go Green to be integrated with the pilot project of the Water Banking Movement. Also playing important parts are the Faculty of Engineering of Brawijaya University who helped Glintung with some initial research, implementation of applicable and unique catchment technology and scientific evaluation to measure project progress. Later on, as the project grew, support came from local businesses like restaurants who buy organic food produced from the kampong, local and national communities, such as the National Kampong Network, and Earth Hour which helped promote green initiatives and attract green tourism. Support also came from communities which see value and prospects in Glintung Go Green as a pilot project in integrating ecology, economics and social cultural empowerment as an example of sustainable area development.

Resources Used for Implementation

The majority of resources during the initial process came independently from residents who donated money, goods, food and time to the community fund. Malang City Government also contributes in the form of a stimulus fund awarded via Green Campong Competitions of Malang City which was won by Glintung Go Green.

After the project started to become economically successful, raising funds become much easier with money raised from organic waste collected by the community and bought by Malang Waste Bank, also funds were collected via green tourism (homestays, organic farming and foods) and events organized by the community.

Other important non-cash resources for the Water Banking Movement in Glintung Go Green came in the form of knowledge and science which are supported by strategic partners from major universities in Malang which provided a well-injection and water catchment expert, hydroponic expert, horticulture expert, empowerment expert, communications expert, economic development expert, and sociopreneur expert. All contribute voluntarily.

Innovation has been applied in

It is integral that social and economic benefits are also gained through the development of this environmentally-based project. The Water Banking Movement is implemented in Glintung Go Green Neighborhood of 300 households in every aspect. From the strategy perspective it is a cultural shift, from the usual “wait for help” to “create from within and attract”. This cultural shift also impact-

ed on project structures entirely designed by the community, using local resources before offering proposals to government and universities to facilitate some aspects yet to be covered.

Innovation then also brought in the implementation aspect, where to solve the budget problem, the local leader created a neighborhood rule which stated that every member of a community, in order to be able to process their public related administration, such as ID or marriage letters, they must provide evidence that they have planted one tree and one catchment hole in their house.

Innovation also applied in tools and technology, with help from university research, the Water Banking Movement in Glintung Go Green not only implemented the common type of catchment hole but also an injection well and integrated drainage system, which prevents flooding and is able to absorb more rainwater for groundwater reserve.

Obstacles and Solutions for Innovation

At the beginning, the greening and water banking movement was resisted by the community, because, in their mind, the project will cost a lot in funding which they don’t have. Hence, Mr. Bambang, the leader offered a creative way to convince people that this project is first and foremost about change. The tools can be gained by using any materials available, even trash like old bottles and old pipes. A simple way to start the project and overcome the mindset challenge.

Over time, with patience and diligence, one can bring about the condition of ecofriendly and positive results, and this event began to be demanded by people who want the region to improve. In this case, this competition was very useful for the

community to change its mindset and to show greater concern for their own environment.

Outcomes and Assessments

The Water Banking Movement in Glintung Go Green has succeeded in overcoming yearly flooding in the neighborhood through greening projects, improving the water catchment capacity for every house and road inside the area linked with redesigned drainage.

This innovation, which includes massive greening also succeeded in reducing – by two degrees celsius – the local temperature, thus making the area much more comfortable to reside in.

Groundwater reserves are also improving by around two meters, so reducing the depth needed when people dig for building wells.

From a social and economic perspective, it already creates better awareness, gender participation and a green economy through things such as green tourism, homestays, organic food and education which can be accessed nationally.

Also, money in the Neighborhood reserve fund has risen from just five million rupiahs to 100 million rupiahs, with much of the funds coming from reusing an-organic waste and selling it to a Malang waste bank
