County mourns loss of Tony Castro PAGE 12
During the October 22, 2019 Hernando County School District (HCSD) meeting several community members presented their opinions on the health insurance premium increase for the 2020 policy renewal. In addition to the community input, Lisa Becker, Executive Director of Business Services, spoke on behalf of the item. The agenda item in question is the renewal of health insurance through Florida Blue with a ten percent premium increase. Several affected individuals, including teachers,

paraprofessional staff and the leader of the Hernando County Teachers Assn. (HCTA) spoke at the Tuesday meeting. The first commenter was Laura Santiago, a teacher of 16 years who expressed concern over the increase in health insurance costs. Santiago stated, “...basically it’s $100 a month for me, so that’s $50 a paycheck, and it’s a hardship, so I don’t know how else to say that… I’m just hoping that you’ve exhausted all options possible, before we as the teachers have to eat that amount

Sept. 23 was the first official day of fall, but here in Florida, fall doesn’t feel like fall until late October. Cool-weather, pleasant breezes that whisper throughout the forest and the colors of fall begin to appear, fade and reappear during the next couple of months. Vince Morris, Resource Administrator, and Colleen Werner, Biologist II from the Florida Forest Service, took me on a long-awaited trip to their favorite spots to see the fall colors blooming in the Withlacoochee State Forest. “We have about 200 species of plants that produce wildflowers in the sandhills,” Vince said. “Of course, they all bloom at different times, but in general, most of them bloom in the fall.” The yellow colors of Goldenrods, Hairy Hawkweeds, Narrowleaf Sunflowers, Partridge Peas, and Coastal Plain Honeycomb heads create a scenic view to separate the forest’s green color palette. CLERMONT- Two schools were looking to make history in last Friday’s Class 6A, District 5 championship between Lake Minneola and Springstead. For Lake Minneola, they were looking to do something the football program has never done before and that was to win a district championship. The Hawks at home knew the pressure was on to win the football program’s first ever district crown against an 8-0 Eagles’ team. See LOSS, Page 12

I will always be grateful to Donna. It was nearly a year after we started the Hernando Sun and we didn’t have many ads in our 20 page monthly community paper. We sat down for coffee at what was Local Roots in Brooksville at the Horse Lake Rd plaza. We got to talking and I learned she was from the south Florida area too. She mentioned that she had worked for the Sun Sentinel with clients in the Las Olas area. This was back when newspaper advertising was big business. I was quick to accept her offer to help us out with ad sales. Donna She was a no definitely knew a nonsense lot more sales womabout an with a selling huge heart ads than for her I did and I was community excited to have someone experienced to help our new little paper grow. The ads she sold began appearing in our November 2015 issue which was Hernando Sun’s ninth edition. Donna was a no nonsense sales woman with a huge heart for her community. She quickly brought on advertisers, many of whom still advertise with us today. She was also a talented writer. She often See SNAPP, Page 17
