Week 2 of Middle School Football
On September 13, 2019 the University of Florida/ IFAS Extension at Hernando County offered a training program for participation in the Horseshoe Crab Watch Citizen Science Program. Volunteers had the opportunity to learn about the program and especially about horseshoe crabs, which are not crabs. They are closely related to spiders and other arachnids. We all reacted the same way. See what you can learn when you volunteer! Horseshoe crabs play a significant role in nature as a food source for many marine life species. As their habitat decreases, the population begins to decline. This program helps document information for marine biologists who have some area of involvement, whether it may be researching for conservation or other agencies. An exhibit celebrating hometown sports ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH NACHIN
Saturday, September 28 saw the unveiling of an interesting interactive exhibit put together by the Historic Hernando Preservation Society. On loan from the Smithsonian Institution, it is part of its Museum on Main Street Exhibits. The theme of this one is “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America.” In addition to the items from the Smithsonian, there is local sports memorabilia that members of the community lent for the duration of the exhibit. The display will be in Brooksville for six weeks and is open to the public. There is something of interest to children as well as adults and, best of all, admission is free. The opening day kickoff began with a cheerleading demonstration by the Parrott Middle School Leopards cheerleaders under the direction of Ms. Crystal Whitehouse. Jon Yeager, Secretary and Project Director for the Historic Hernando Preservation Society, welcomed everyone to the event. Brooksville Vice-Mayor Joe Bernardini cut the ribbon to officially open the exhibition. There are seven sections to the exhibit demonstrating the importance of sports to our communities. It covers traditional sports such as football and baseball, along with See SPORTS HISTORY, Page 20
The regular season for prep football in Hernando County heads into Week 6 action and last week’s Week 5 was a wild one for the county. Nature Coast rebounded with a resounding victory while undefeated Springstead was able to fend off an upset by Dade City Pasco group. All five of Hernando County’s squads will be back in action this week and teams will be that much closer to completing the season after this Friday. We take a closer look at all of the Week 6 regular season matchups on tap for Friday night.

Hernando (3-3) at Springstead (5-0): One of Hernando County’s oldest rivalries takes place Friday night at Booster Stadium, as the undefeated Eagles host the Leopards. Springstead is coming off a narrow 10-3 victory over Dade City Pasco last Friday and the offense looked all out of sorts facing an athletic Pirates’ bunch. Nonetheless, the
