If you’ve visited Barbie Cue, the food truck that resides next to Marker 48 on Cortez Blvd, you have probably been in search of ribs or brisket. In her four years in business, Laurie-Ann Wilkens has never had a patron approach her window asking what the iconic doll with the same first name is doing these days. We checked. Mattel’s Barbie has been working in marine biology, beekeeping and even photojournalism, but she’s not been creating spice rubs or perfecting her “Hot and Fast” method of smoking meat. Wilkens, however has been. Wilkens applied for a trademark in February of this year (2019). Her logo and slogan, “It’s Smokin’ Hot” were approved for publication by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Upon approval, the request becomes public record, and other companies are able to review it and oppose if they feel the trademark infringes upon their own. “Mattel opposed it because ‘Barbie’ is in the name, but they have nothing in the rubs and sauces or food truck realm,” Wilkens said. “So they would have to show that they were intending on opening food trucks or had the See BARBIE CUE, Page 17

'The Chain Gang' By ROCCO MAGLIO HERNANDO SUN

When you attend a high school football game, you see some amazing athletes, but many more people work behind the scenes to allow the football game to take place. There is the stadium ground crew, the volunteers manning the ticket booth and concession stands. The chain gang is another group that receives little recognition. The chain gang is the group that is responsible for holding the first down markers on the sidelines, so the teams know where they have to reach to receive a first down. They also keep track of which down it is for the

teams. In some areas they request volunteers from the stands to man the chains, but Hernando High has had consistency on the chain gangs. The current chain gang Bill Blair, Doug Chorvat, Mike Steele, Mikey Steele Jr manning the sideline for Hernando High has been at it since the 2004 season. Mikey joined the gang a little later when he was around 5 years old. The chain gang works hard to avoid mistakes because they take personal pride in the job that they do.
