Local clinic healing with love Americans have struggled for decades to afford health care and it's not uncommon for many of us who can't afford health care or insurance to end up in hospital emergency rooms — particularly as their health problems deteriorate and become more difficult to treat. In Hernando County, residents are fortunate to have the Crescent Community Clinic. Founded in 2008 in Brooksville by physicians from the county’s Muslim community, its mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of the underserved, indigent and uninsured and to provide the best

ernando County is usually threatened by at least one storm forecast during the hurricane season. Often the storms are steered elsewhere, although it has been only two years since a weakened Irma directly hit this area. Last year the community came together to deliver supplies to Mexico Beach, Florida and surrounding communities impacted by Hurricane Michael. There were many local businesses and organizations that delivered needed supplies. The constant threat of being hit by a hurricane, leads residents of this area to feel a kinship with the victims of a hurricane. Hurricane Dorian directly hit the Bahamas as an intense category 5 hurricane. Once again the community is coming together to support the victims of the latest hurricane. See DORIAN, Page 20

Camaraderie: more important than the score

BY: JESSICA WILLIAMS jessica@hernandosun.com

No way. At 15 years old, my friends had better things to do. Such as driving behind the wheel with their freshly printed driver’s license permit. Now that was a good time. Their idea of fun certainly wasn’t staring into the abyss of a sewing machine, listening to the helicopter noise it blurted out as my grandmother pushed down on her foot pedal, underneath her toes. No ma’am. That was torture for my teenage friends. They’d rather watch paint dry. But me, for some unknown reason, I found it fascinating. Mesmerized by the electronic needle dancing into the fabric pieces as it scooted underneath the powerful machine. Turning scraps of old fabric into beautiful works of art and clothing. Blouses. Pants. Blankets. Anything could be created. If I could dream it, that machine could make it. See SEW, Page 7

It was more than just another volleyball game on Wednesday Sept. 4. During set three NCT Senior setter Karla Cantero-Garcia sustained an ankle injury. The entire Weeki Wachee team came over to her bench console her. “An act like this displays that a camaraderie exists in the volleyball world between the girls regardless of who or where they play, even more important than the win or loss column,” said Martin Colleran, who was in attendance. A photo by Eileen Colleran of the Weeki Wachee team surrounding and consoling Cantero-Garcia went viral after the game. See VOLLEYBALL, Page 13
