A Southern Affair The Arc Nature Coast holds 'Gone with the Wind' themed Prom
Garbage pickup is very important. When it suddenly stops, it can be frustrating for anybody, but it’s even worse for elderly or disabled residents who have trouble communicating, moving around or have a fragile state of health. Lilyan Vannerson is 86 years old. She speaks in a broken staccato manner, since she has trouble breathing. She lives in a quiet, rural area of Hernando County on the property her parents purchased in 1949. They were dairy farmers that moved up from Clearwater. She happens to be my neighbor. I only met her last Thursday, when she phoned our office out of exasperation. She is a Republic Services customer, but her garbage hadn’t been picked up by the company since June 20. On Tuesday, July 30, the Arc Nature Coast held a Prom for the individuals it serves. The Gone With the Wind themed event kicked off at noon at the center located in Spring Hill. Approximately one hundred Arc customers, along with staff and people from the community attended the dance. Several months of planning

had gone into putting the prom together. Angela Bryant, team leader at the center, stated, "We chose Gone With the Wind as our theme because we wanted to celebrate the South." "We decided to organize the prom because in our Kiwanis Club meeting we had discussed the fact that the Arc customers had never experienced a prom and we thought it would be a wonderful thing for them to experience," Ms. Bryant continued.
