STORY BY JESSICA WILLIAMS, PHOTOS COURTESY OF ARROYO FAMILY

On May 11, 1992, Robert Moore was born in a Tampa hospital. After giving birth, his mother wanted nothing to do with him. The boy’s father had abandoned him as well. Because he was left alone, Children and Family services were called and began frantically looking around to find someone to care for him. As the

nurses fed him and changed his tiny diapers, the clock started ticking on who would care for him. The maternal grandparents were found and contacted. They didn’t want the baby either. Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Deputy Jeff McDougal was on routine patrol around 2:30 AM in Ridge Manor on May 3, 2019. Unusual for the late hour, he stopped to ask the couple if they had any knowledge of a problem or disturbance nearby. They did not. He then noticed one home with lights on. “It was a well-manicured yard, the lights are on, and it’s 2:30 in the morning,” McDougal explained. He parked, and made his way toward the home. As he approached the residence, an elderly woman suddenly appeared from the doorway in a frantic manner telling McDougal that her son needed help, and that he would not wake up. Playoffs start in softball this week for Hernando High BY ANDY VILLAMARZO PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALICE MARY HERDEN

The postseason for prep softball begins this week and only one team from Hernando County qualifies for the playoffs: the Hernando Leopards. The Leopards won’t be in a usual spot to begin the postseason, as Hernando begins the Class 5A playoffs on the road to face Orlando Bishop Moore. Reason being for Hernando starting off on the road was a collapse in the Class 5A, District 7 championship game against Wesley Chapel Cypress Creek, in which the Leopards let a 5-0 lead evaporate into a 7-5 loss. Now the Leopards must bounce back and try to setup a posSee SOFTBALL, Page 11
