“Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society”

LEGENDARY TRAIN JOURNEYS OF THE WORLD

PAGE 14

On May 1, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed Law Day to be celebrated on May 1 of each year. The American Bar Association chooses a theme to highlight an important issue in our legal system. This year’s Law Day theme is Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society. Co-Founder of the Hernando Sun, Rocco Maglio was asked to be the keynote speaker of the Law Day Dinner at the Hernando

County Bar Association. Some of the ideas that he spoke about are discussed in the following paragraphs.

What does a Free Press mean? Definitions are hard. Is the press free to slant their coverage, however they want or should they be required to fairly cover the news? Who decides what is fair coverage? Is a Free Press required to cover the full story or is it acceptable to only cover a portion of a story that supports the narrative about the larger picture of what is happening? Who decides what constitutes full coverage of a story? The answer to the question of who decides See FREE PRESS, Page 6

In a packed auditorium at Hernando High School, Senior Malia Williams gave a very personal account of her sixteen year old sister’s frightening experience while experimenting with others using an eCigarette, or ‘vape.’ Shortly after puffing on the device, her sister’s heart rate soared

to a dangerously high rate. Doctors would later report that the fluid within contained arsenic. “That’s rat poison!” Williams told the audience. Williams, who organized the assembly, invited the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and Tobacco Free Florida to help send this important message. Williams did not dwell on the action that led to her sister’s hospitalization, but rather concentrated on the subject

Pretrial hearing in high profile first degree murder case set for May 6 by GINA GOMEZ Hernando Sun Reporter

A

pretrial conference in a decades old first degree murder case is set for Monday, May 6, 2019. The conference will determine where the case is at this point. A retrial of Paul Hildwin for the 1985 murder of Vronzettie Cox is pending. Honorable Judge Stephen Toner in Hernando County presides over the case which has garnered attention from national media outlets such as Slate and the New York Times. Hildwin was charged with first degree murder in 1985 and faced the death penalty (until 1995). In 2003, the re-evaluation of DNA evidence excluded Hildwin as a source of the DNA found at the crime scene. The Florida Supreme Court overturned Hildwin’s conviction in 2014. The Florida Supreme Court also granted a new trial for Hildwin. Paul Hildwin battled cancer multiple times while serving his prison sentence. While on death row, he beat blood cancer and went into remission. Now, he has tonsil cancer which has caused more delay in his legal case. In recent months Hildwin’s present lawyer, Lyann Goudie, filed a motion to dismiss the indictment and it was denied by Judge Toner. The Beginning In 1985, a 25-year old Paul Hildwin had moved from New York

Former Weeki Wachee OL signs with NFL’s Baltimore Ravens

BY ANDY VILLAMARZO HERNANDO SUN SPORTS WRITER

Getting signed onto an NFL roster is something that less than one percent of high school players end up doing. For former Weeki Wachee offensive lineman Marcus Applefield, signing with an NFL team became a reality last weekend. Applefield signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. The University of Virginia had two players selected during the draft’s seven rounds, but Applefield and a few other Cavaliers received calls immediately after it concluded on Saturday. The former Hornet becomes the second area football player in the last two years to sign with the Ravens, as former Dade City Pasco wide receiver Janarion Grant signed with Baltimore last See APPLEFIELD, Page 11
