Founded in 1996, the SEED Foundation is a non-profit 501c(3) organization. It is volunteer and donation based. Carl J. Pizzo founded the organization on the philosophy that communities can make the world a better place. The idea came to him when he noticed how many people who suffer from illness or personal tragedy didn’t qualify for government support. A few years ago, the organization moved to Hernando County, where it began sowing the SEEDs of love, leadership, and hope. Judy Mastro, the current President, assumed the reins of the organization in 2015. “Not all help is monetary, some help is in the form of gas cards, food, auto repairs, even housing for a night or two,” Ms.
Mastro states. The organization’s goal is to help people who have fallen on hard times and need some assistance. These people may be families or individuals, from single mothers to Senior Citizens to a teenage gunshot victim. Recently, the SEED Foundation helped a disabled senior Armed Forces veteran who had been scammed by a so-called “handyman.” Joe (not his real name) had paid the “handyman” all the money for a flooring job, but the man wound up in jail, leaving the job unfinished. The organization purchased the additional flooring needed to finish the job from Lumber Liquidators and volunteers finished the installation. The SEED Foundation is a rel-

The SEED Foundation helped Brianna Nicole, 19, two years ago when she was tragically shot in the face. She is now part of the SEED Foundation family and operates Bri’s Closet, a “pop-up” women’s clothing thrift store with proceeds going to the foundation’s benevolent account and Brianna’s education account.
While this story is of national significance, there is a strong local connection historically, as many of the Italian immigrants of New Orleans moved to the Tampa area, including Hernando County following the lynching. by ROCCO MAGLIO New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a Certificate of Recognition with an apology to the descendants of those killed and the Italian American community on Friday morning, April 12, 2019, for the “largest mass lynching in United States history.” The lynching was of 11 Italian immigrants on March 14, 1891 by a large mob which contained many of New Orlean’s most prominent citizens. The Italians had been accused of the murder of the New Orleans Police Chief Commissioner David Hennessy. It is said while dying Hennessy identified his attackers See ITALIANS, Page 6

Can anyone beat Hernando softball? By Andy Villamarzo Hernando Sun sports writer

BROOKSVILLE- 21 games into the 2019 season and there’s one thing for certain about Hernando High School’s varsity softball team: they are a tough bunch to defeat. Through 21 games played and four to go in the regular season, the Leopards have only lost once to Tampa Sickles 2-0 in the championship game of the Leopard Slam tournament. Other than that loss? Hernando has not lost to anyone else and as the regular season continues to wind down and every team in the state gears up for district tournaments, the Leopards are the team to beat. Hernando plays in Class 5A, District 7 and has dominated its district play schedule throughout the entire season. The Leopards currently own a record of 11-0 playing opponents in 5A-7. The district rival is Nature Coast Technical, whom is HHS pitcher Ali Shenefield. Photo by Cheryl Clanton.
