he Withlacoochee Forest is more than just a forest, it’s filled with nature’s most beautiful timber, Longleaf Pine. Longleaf Pine is Florida’s native pine tree and is highly sought for lumber. It is also home to the red-cockaded woodpecker. Before the 20th century the red-cockaded woodpecker
was abundant throughout Florida. With the expansion of the turpentine and logging industry, a significant amount of longleaf pine was clear cut placing these birds on the edge of extinction. It was on Oct. 13, 1970 that the United States Fish and Wildlife Service listed the red-cockaded woodpecker as an endangered species and in Florida as threatened. “There are only 650 species of birds in North America, and about six have

The first official soccer scholarship signing for a Hernando High School student athlete occurred on March 26, 2019. “Hard work,” Senior Austin Galda said. “That is what everything is based on: hard work and dedication.” Galda signed at Community College of Baltimore County in Maryland to obtain his nursing degree with scholarships for soccer and baseball. He explained that out of the schools he received offers from, Community College of Baltimore County was one of the only schools with a nursing program. Galda’s main sport was baseball until Coach Jonathan Stone introduced him to soccer. “I have to thank Coach Stone. If it weren’t for him, I would never be signing for soccer because I would never have played soccer,” Galda said. Hernando High isn’t known for its soccer program, but Coach Stone has taken great strides in improving the program over the past two seasons as head coach.
When Dr. Brian Roebuck opened his practice in 1987, his sign-in ledger was a simple composition book commonly seen in high school and college writing classes. The first patient signed in on December 9, 1987, and Delia Gagliardi signed the ledger the next day. Also a patient, Delia’s husband lived to be 94. He always greeted Dr. Roebuck as “Friend.” Dr. Roebuck recently found his original signin book while moving, “I was going over items that I didn’t need to keep, and I said, ‘No, I need to keep this first sign-in book.’ Glancing through his 31-yearold book of original patients, he saw two names that are still his patients today. Emil Vogler first came to see Dr. Roebuck on February 24, 1988. Emil, a World War II Veteran serviced planes of the era, of which Dr. Roebuck is a huge fan. Emil and several of his Veteran cohorts have signed Dr. Roebuck’s enormous book of WWII aircraft. Dr. Roebuck looks over the names, and points to one who died recently, “He was in his mid-90s,” Dr. Roebuck recalled. Medicine is more than a business to Dr. Roebuck. “This is a privilege, actually, it’s like living history. My parents are from Europe, so I have a different take on medSee DOC, Page 14
