Seniors remembered for the holidays ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALICE MARY HERDEN

BASKETBALL Bobcats defense critical to 11 win.

As the holidays are approaching, warm wishes and holiday decorations fill most homes in our community. Yet some need a little help to be merry and bright - like elderly residents who are homebound, or live alone without relatives nearby. In 2012 Maureen Riser,

a franchise owner with Home Instead Senior Care opened the first office in Hernando County and businesses like this are important for many seniors in our community who are living alone or with family members living away. Home Instead Senior Care provides a senior program around the holidays called ‘Be a Santa See SANTA, Page 14

Local business and organizations around Hernando County participate in the Be a Santa to a Senior by displaying Senior Bulb tags with a senior gift wish. Patrons choose a bulb from the tree and purchase the requested gift

‘It’s the future of surgery’

Dr. Nabeel Hamoui of Oak Hill Hospital talks about robotic surgical advances in men’s health by SUE QUIGLEY

HERNANDO SUN WRITER

For the past two decades, November has been celebrated as the month to raise awareness of men’s health issues, particularly prostate and testicular cancers. Here in the US, as well as several other countries including Australia, New Zealand and the UK, men are Dr. Nabeel encouraged Hamoui, MD, MBA to grow mustaches during November as a way to start conversations about the seriousness of what is the most common cancer in men. According to the National Cancer Institute, the estimated number of new cases of prostate cancer in 2018 will reach 164,690 and estimated deaths will reach almost 30,000. “Prostate cancer is a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it,” said Dr. Nabeel Hamoui, MD, MBA. Dr. Hamoui, a recent addition to the medical staff at Oak Hill Hospital, is a specialist in urology and interventional radiology. He is board eligible in urology and board certified in interventional radiology (IR) and diagnostic radiology. He joins his brother, Dr. Omar Hamoui and his father, Dr. Mohammed Nazir Hamoui, who are also urology specialists. “We’re a family of urologists,” he smiled. Dr. Hamoui is one of only two people in the entire country who has dual training in urology and radiology/IR. This training helps him in diagnosing and developing a treatment plan for those with urology issues. Prostate cancer afSee UROLOGY, Page 15

A tough week for the Hernando High School boys soccer team, 2A Mount Dora started out the week coming to Tom Fisher stadium on Monday night. The score line doesn’t reflect the game in full as the Leopards had 56% of the game’s possession but couldn’t make opportunities count as they went down 6-0 to a team widely known to win their District. Wednesday saw the Hornets enter the Leopards cage with Weeki Wachee coming into town for a District encounter. The night was to be a two sided coin for Goalkeeper Jordan Goss who after being left stranded for the Hornets opener came back to save a penalty as the game finished 3-3. Two goals from Leopards’ Jacob Kelly and a leveler from Noah Bedard were cancelled out by Hornets Seth Tarbox, Luis Endara and Rafael Garcia. Luis Endara was on the score sheet again for Weeki Wachee on Friday as they got their weekend off
