Just east of Ridge Manor towards Richloam is a very unique farm. There are no cows, but what it does have is a nice selection of Florida grown Christmas trees. Omar Ergle, tried to establish an orange grove in Dade City, FL back in the 70’s. As a border along the property line, he planted red cedars. For two years in a row, his orange grove froze but the red cedar trees continued to flourish. A concept for a u-cut Christmas tree farm was born that eventually developed into a family business.

“Back in the day my father owned a farm in Dade City, we kind of piggy back off that and started this farm,” said Ergle’s daughter Debbie Harris. Debbie and Tony Harris are the owners of the 24 acre Ergle Christmas Tree farm located 3325 Treiman Blvd. (US 301), Dade City. They planted the first tree in 1982. The couple has presented both Gov. Lawton Chiles and Gov. Jeb Bush with the Governor’s Christmas Tree on behalf of the Florida Christmas Tree Association.

Sharks season ends on last-second field goal attempt

Going into Friday night’s FHSAA Class 5A, Region II final, the Nature Coast Sharks were already enjoying an incredible season.

The Sharks, after falling to Ridgeview High in the opener, railed off 11 straight wins en route to usurping the Zephyrhills Bulldogs and North Marion Colts of the top seed in the region.

Unfortunately, though, NCT would have to face off against one of those two squads, welcoming in the Colts to the Shark Tank, with the winner facing off against either Trinity Christian or Bolles in Sharks Cai Teague, wide receiver, attempts a catch during the 5A Region 2 Final See SHARKS, Page 12

The history of this area has many references to the Wahoo Indians. The Istachatta New Hope Church/ Blockhouse was built to protect against the Wahoo Indians. The Wahoo Indians were from the Wahoo Swamp area. Wahoo Swamp was a major Indian settlement and it was located near present day Wahoo, Florida.

Several battles of the Second Seminole War were fought around the Wahoo Swamp. In the largest of these battles General Richard K. Call, who was also governor of the territory of Florida, led the 2500 Tennessee Volunteers, regular army artillery, Florida militiamen, and hundreds of Creek Indians against the Seminole stronghold.

The soldiers advanced across the swamp (south of where the battle’s historic marker is now located) driving the Indians before them. In the battle, Creek Indian Major David Moniac, the first Native American to graduate from West Point, was killed as he led the men across the swamp (on Nov. 21, 1836). The battle See WAHOO Page 15

Budget Analyst Bob Sorg gave his first presentation to the commission.

Sorg explained Capital Improvements as those that cost over $50,000 and have a minimum useful life of over ten years. He further explained that projects completed in 2018 would not be a part of this presentation.

The Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Five Year plan shows positive growth through 2023. Sorg reported the budget for FY 2019 to be $67,162,449 and the five year budget to be $198,432,858. There are 120 projects scheduled for FY 2019, and 208 over the five year period.

Sorg further broke down the projects by department: Department of Public Works (DPW): 78, Hernando County Utilities Department (HCUD): 18, Airport Operations: 4, Hernando County Fire/ Rescue: 2, Parks and Recreation: 2, Planning and Transit: 2, Solid Waste and Recycling: 8, Facilities Maintenance: 3, Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO): 1, Building Division: 1, Court Improvement Fund: 1 The Technology Drive / Telcom Drive expansion is listed in the FY 2019 Airport Projects list. Also notable is the Anderson Snow Splash Park, shown in the Parks and Recreation list. Deputy County Administrator Jeff Rogers added that the redesign of Fire Stations 5 and 6 will be a part of the FY 2019 plan.

November 27, 2018 NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA Staff Florida-grown romaine lettuce has been cleared in the recent E. coli outbreak, state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam said Tuesday. “While the federal investigation is ongoing, I’m encouraged that Florida-grown romaine lettuce is not linked to the outbreak and has been cleared to re-enter the marketplace,” Putnam said in a prepared statement. Late Monday, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention narrowed an earlier warning about the outbreak to romaine lettuce harvested in coastal areas of northern and central California. A Nov. 20 advisory from the CDC recommended that people should not eat any romaine lettuce, with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requesting all romaine lettuce be removed from store shelves. The outbreak has been linked to 43 people in 12 states getting sick, along with 22 people in Canada, according to the Food and Drug Administration. None of the people who became ill were in Florida. Putnam in a news release said he spoke last Wednesday with Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb to urge immediate inspections of Florida fields to speed the reintroduction of Florida romaine into the market. In a follow-up letter the same day to Gottlieb, Putnam said Florida’s harvest was just beginning and “therefore, is not associated with this outbreak.”

The defendant was taken into custody for violating the conditions of pre-trial release and resisting arrest. He was issued a “no bond” for violating the no contact order and issued a $1000 bond for resisting a law enforcement officer. Ha was given a misdemeanor court date of 12/19/2018 at 0900 hours In courtroom “B” at the Hernando County Courthouse.

A search of Iha vehicle was conducted, I than located an opened black pouch on the middle seat located in the front row of the vehicle.

The black pouch contained a digital scale which Is commonly used to weigh Illegal narcotics, multiple clear bags, a glass smoking pipe and a clear bag of a crystal like substance which through my training and experience was consistent with methamphetamine. I then used Narco test kit 7623 and the crystal like substance tested positive for methamphetamine.

Using Ohaus Scala Iha clear bag containing Iha methamphetamine weighed 3.4 grams.

Through the amount of bags which appeared to ba new/unused and along with Iha digital scale, it is evident that the defendant has the intent distribute and package methamphetamine.

Post Miranda Iha defendant refused to talk to Law Enforcement.

Utilizing DAVID it was confirmed that the defendant’s currant driver’s license was suspended. The defendant was issued a criminal traffic citation for driving while license Is suspended with knowledge #AAOENLE. The defendant was arrested and transported to the Hernando County Jail.

The defendant received a court data of 12121/2018 at 0830 hours in courtroom E. The defendant is being held on a $14,000.00 bond.

While speaking with the victim I observed her injuries to be consistent with her statement to include a small laceration on her lip which appeared to be swollen. I also observed the area under her left eye to be swollen, which the victim advised was from the defendant punching her.

I eventually made contact with the defendant after he was located walking on Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. After identifying him via his name, date of birth, and social security number, the defendant was read his Miranda Rights via my agency issued card. Post Miranda, the defendant advised that he wished to waive his rights and speak with me. The defendant first advised that ha only left the residence due to being In an argument with the victim, and that she most likely punched herself to cause her Injuries. The defendant than changed his statement, advising that he only slapped the victim in the face after she kicked him in the stomach.

A criminal history check was conducted on Bruce which revealed that he was convicted of Domestic Battery on 08-24-1999 In Citrus County, court case number 9902217MM01, which he received a guilty conviction for. Bruce was also found to have a guilty conviction for Domestic Battery on 05-032001 in Hernando County, court case number 01000035MMMA, which he also received a guilty conviction for.

At that time the defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center where they were charged Domestic Battery (second offense) and held on a no bond status. The defendant was given a court date of 12-21-2018 at 0830 hours, in Courtroom E of the Hernando County Courthouse.

BELL, KYLIE MARIE YOB: 1999 CHARGES: LEAVE SCENE OF ACC W/DAMAGE (x2), DUI-DAMAGE TO PERSON/PROPERTY(x2) Arrested at: 11/2412018 06:29 ROYAL PALM WAY & COUNTY LINE RD, SPRING HILL, FL, 34609 Arrest Summary: On November 24, 2018 at approximately 0601 hours, I responded to the area of Royal Palm Way and County Line Road in reference to a hit and run and DUI Investigation.

Dispatch advised that there was a black SUV driving eastbound In the westbound lanes on Spring Hill Drive. In front of 11055 Spring Hill Drive the vehicle entered the median and struck several street signs, knocking them down. The vehicle failed to stop and continued eastbound on Spring Hill Drive, before turning southbound on Mariner Boulevard. The vehicle proceeded to travel southbound in the northbound lanes. The vehicle then turned east on Quality Drive and began to drive through the business parking lots.

The vehicle ended up traveling southbound on Medical Lane and at the intersection of County Line Road, the vehicle struck the stop sign, knocking it partially down.

The vehicle failed to stop again and turned westbound on County Line Road and proceeded to run the rad light at Iha intersection of County Line Road and Mariner Boulevard, which was witnessed by Deputy S. McDonough, who Initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle.

I observed a black Ford Escape bearing Florida license plate #CVHB65, which had extensive front end damage, consistent with hitting and running over street signs.

I made contact with the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, Kylie Marie Bell, who was sitting in the grass in front of her vehicle upon my arrival. Kylie was having difficulty keeping her head up. She was slurring her words and mumbling while talking. She had difficulty understanding ma, when I spoke with her.

I informed Kylie that I was conducting a criminal DUI investigation. I had to explain it to her numerous times before she was able to comprehend what I was telling her. I asked her to participate In voluntary Standardized Field Sobriety Exercises (SFSEs), which she agreed to participate in.

When Kylie stood up, she almost fell over on her left side. Once she was on her feet, she was very unsteady and was swaying and staggering as she walked to the area where I was going to administer SFSEs. The first exercise was Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), Kylie was wavering while I explained the exercise to her and was also wavering during the exercise. Kylie had distinct Nystagmus in both eyes at maximum deviation and onset of Nystagmus in her right aye, prior to 45 degrees.

The next exercise was the walk and tum. Kylie was unable to maintain her balance during the instructional phase of this exercise. She was unable to maintain the starting position

GARRISON, DONALD BART YOB: 1961 CHARGES: VIOLATION OF PRE-TRIAL RELEASE, RESIST/ OBSTR OFFICER W/O VIOL Arrested at: 11/23/2018 00:39 ALADDIN RD, SPRING HILL, FL, 34609 Arrest Summary: On 11/2212018, at approximately 2329 hours, I was dispatched to Aladdin Road In reference to a trespass. The occupant reported her ex-boyfriend Donald Garrison (the defendant), arrived at this residence intoxicated and was being verbally aggressive. She advised the defendant was recently arrested for Domestic Battery (201833219) against her on 10/20/2018 and there is an active “No Contact” order In place.

Upon arrival, I made contact with the victim, who advised that she believed the defendant had left. She advised he was screaming at her aggressively, therefore she locked herself in the master bedroom. She advised he was not supposed to be here, and she was scared of him. A system records check of the Comprehensive Case information System (CCIS), revealed the defendant was issued a “No Contact Order’’ on 10/20/2018 by the Honorable Judge P. Miiiteiio In First Appearance, and the case Is still active pending trial (18MM3428).

The defendant was located in the backyard of the residence, inside a camper, which was locked. The defendant was severely Intoxicated and refused to exit the camper. He was making statements such as, “You guys are going to take me straight to jail, I’m not f****** coming out” I made contact with the defendant via cell phone and spoke with him for approximately 17 minutes, with no avail. The defendant was ordered numerous times to exit the camper, to which ha refused.

He barricaded himself inside of the camper for approximately 45 minutes. Ultimately, the victim provided a key to the camper and while attempting to open the door, the defendant exited willingly.

EDWARDS, SCOTT RYAN YOB: 1982 CHARGES: POSS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, POSSESSION DRUG PARAPHERNALIA, KNOWINGLY DRIVE WHILE LIC SUSPENDED/ REVOKED Arrested at: 11/26/2018 21:56 7031 HOLIDAY DR, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 11/2612018 I observed a 1997 red Dodge pickup truck bearing Florida tag BVRM14 fail to stop at a stop sign at Iha intersection of Tarrytown Drive and Holiday Drive located in Hernando County.

I then conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at 7031 Holiday Drive.

Upon making contact with the driver of the vehicle who was the sole occupant (the defendant), I asked for a driver’s license. The defendant replied “I must have left my wallet at home”, a few seconds later the defendant stated “I’m not even gonna lie, it’s suspended I found out last week when I was pulled over off Northcllffe” Upon asking Iha defendant if there was anything in Iha car for officer safety that I need to know about, Iha defendant replied “maybe some weed”.

I then asked Iha defendant to step out of the vehicle, while Iha defendant was stepping out of Iha vehicle under his right lag I observed a syringe with a purple like substance liquid which through my training and experience is constant with amphetamines. I then recovered Iha needle and used Narco test kit A1603. The substance inside Iha needle tested positive for amphetamines.

Kylie had extreme difficulty paying attention and comprehending the Instructions. I had to explain them to her numerous times. Once the exercise began Kylie took 10 steps missing heel to toe on every step.

Kylie used her arms for balance during the entire exercise. Once Kylie finished the first 10 steps, she completed the turn incorrectly and then took 19 steps back, missing heel to toe on every step.

The next exercise was the one leg stand. Kylie had difficulty maintaining her balance during the instructional phase of this exercise. Kylie utilized her arms for balance during this entire exercise. Once the exercise began, she chose to lift her right foot, which she lifted and put down 8 times without counting. Kylie lost her balance twice during this evaluation.

The next exercise was the finger to nose exercise. Kylie had difficulty maintaining her balance during the instructional phase of this exercise.

Once the exercise began, Kylie failed to keep her head tilted back and touched her finger to her eye on every move.

Based on my observations of Kylie and her poor performance of SFSEs, coupled with eyewitness testimony of witness Eddie V. of Kylie leaving both scenes of a traffic crash, Kylie was placed under arrest for leaving the scene of a traffic crash and DUI and read implied consent. Kylie agreed to provide a breath sample and was transported to the Hernando County Jail, where after a 20 minute observation period she provided 2 breath samples that resulted In a 0.000.

Kylie was read implied consent for urine. Kylie agreed to provide a urine sample, but failed to do so. Kylie was booked into the jail for count 1 - leaving the scene of a traffic crash with property damage - bond $500.00, count 2 - leaving the scene of a traffic crash with property damage - bond $500.00, DUI property damage - bond $1,000.00 and count 4 - , DUI property damage - bond $1,000.00.

HOLLEY, AMANDA JADE later, the Defendant walked out of the residence. While attempting to speak to the Defendant, she began screaming and would not answer any questions. The Defendant was then placed into custody pending further investigation. A search of the residence for anyone else within was met with negative results.

Upon speaking with the complainant, Christopher F., he was able to provide the victims’ contact information. Upon speaking to one of the victims, Tiffany P., she advised that her, her friend, Colleen M., and the Defendant went out for the evening on 11/23/2018. Tiffany stated that when they returned at approximately 0500 hours to 0600 hours to the residence, the Defendant was intoxicated and passed out. Tiffany stated that she and Colleen left the Defendant to sleep by herself inside of the residence. Tiffany further stated that they would be returning shortly after.

Tiffany stated while she was out with Colleen, she received a phone call in reference to the Defendant being at her residence, destroying the interior to include televisions, clothing, food, furniture, female products, and other household Items as well as breaking windows at the residence.

Tiffany stated she would immediately return to see the damages caused by the Defendant. Upon Tiffany’s arrival, she reviewed the damages to the residence as Indicated above.

Tiffany advised the Defendant was only given permission to stay at the residence and not given permission to damage any items within. Tiffany advised that there was approximately $5,000.00 in damages to the property belonging to her, her other, Christine P., and Colleen.

After viewing the damages at the residence, Tiffany and Colleen advised that they wanted to prosecute the Defendant. Tiffany stated that she was also speaking on her mother’s behalf due to her mother being out of town during this incident.

Tiffany advised her mother was not answering her cell phone.

Contact was later made with the Defendant at the Hernando County Jail. Post Miranda, the Defendant declined to make any statements.

The Defendant was charged with 3 counts of felony criminal mischief and the bond was sat at $6,000.00 per the bond schedule.

The Nov. 19 Brooksville City Council meeting run down Notes & Articles from the Nov. 19, 2018 meeting. By Kathryn Dentato Mayor Erhard opened the meeting by introducing Father Paul Pecchie of St. Anthony the Abbot Catholic Church in Brooksville. Father Pecchie gave the invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL/MODIFICATIONS OF THE AGENDA Mayor Erhard then asked for any modifications of the agenda. City Manager Mark Kutney advised that the lobbying team requested that they be allowed to make their presentation earlier in the meeting due to having to return to Tallahassee the same evening. Council member Joe Bernardini recommended moving their presentation to Section F where other presentations were scheduled. Bernardini made the motion and council member Bill Kemerer seconded. The motion passed 4-0, as Brent Young was not present.

Erhard asked to move the code enforcement update so that it occurred before the last citizen input section, in the agenda location where the lobbying team was originally scheduled. Bernardini made the motion and Vice-Mayor Robert Battista seconded. The motion passed 4-0.

Bernardini made the motion to approve the amended agenda, seconded by Kemerer, and it was passed 4-0.

America Recycles Day Accepted by City Staff Jon Dowler, Project Manager for the City Public Works Department.

America Recycles Day 2018 – 11/15/18 – Bernardini read the proclamation, explaining the benefits of recycling and the positive impacts on the City of Brooksville including creating jobs and helping the city’s economy. The proclamation described several ways to recycle, and suggested that while some recycling is in progress, it’s up to the city council and others to continue to lead the way. Brooksville’s citizens should become even more involved, continue to learn about recycling and use recycled products.

The proclamation was accepted by Jon Dowler, Project Manager, from Brooksville’s Department of Public Works (DPW), who provided handouts to the council members and discussed Thanksgiving week changes for recycling pickups. He advised that the #6 is not included in the recycling sticker/icon because that is Styrofoam.

Comparing the number of recycling subscribers (800+ for October 2017) with those who actually participated (230), he stated this equates to approximately 27%. By March 2018 the number of subscribers was reduced (through “cleaning up” the list) to 538 enrollees, which equates to around 43% participation rate.

New residents of Brooksville can obtain a sticker from DPW and enroll in the program. Pickups are the first and third Wednesdays of the month.

Giving Tuesday – 11/27/18 – Erhard read the proclamation. Giving Tuesday is designed to show thankfulness by selfless giving and volunteering in the community wherever and however they are able. “Giving Tuesday is a day where citizens work together to share commitments, rally for favorite causes, build a stronger community reminding people there is more to the holidays than consumerism and commercialization,” she read.

Sandra Knox, from We Care of Brooksville, accepted the proclamation. We Care of Brooksville accepts donations that they share all year to help provide batteries and tires for needy families, school uniforms, etc.

Knox gave credit to the community members, saying, “I can’t do what I do without them.”

CITIZEN INPUT Road issues Steve Allman stated he thinks the root cause of the road issues on his street are the water lines that frequently break. He was thankful for the work that DPW has done on the road and in cutting the trees. Allman believes that good infrastructure will benefit the city as more people move here, particularly millennials.

Beautifying the city is a good thing, but it won’t matter if the roads and sidewalks are bad.

Locked Gates at the Quarry Ivy Cordell, the owner of Wild Ivy’s Salon, objected to the gates at the Quarry being locked on certain days.

This causes a problem as she is there almost daily with her workout partners, gear, and dogs. She does not see any consistency, as the gates seem to be locked on some holidays and not others. Emergency personnel could have difficulty getting to citizens in need of assistance. Cordell said there is a lack of signage showing the hours of operation. She would like to volunteer on the Quarry Love Trail but wants to be able to park closer due to the amount of gear she has to carry.

Donna Morran agreed with Ivy about the access to the Quarry. She also noted that the bathrooms are unlocked 24 hrs/day and expressed concern for crime and liability. The Sheriff’s Office does not appear to be patrolling as often as the city was told, Morran said.

The conditions of the bathroom were “nasty filthy dirty” with some toilet paper, but no paper towels. According to what the website indicated the city is paying, she said, she would have expected adequate supplies and cleanliness. She suggested paying for private security to have a 24-hour presence at city parks though she acknowledged it could be expensive. Additionally, she was concerned about the weeds growing around the monuments. This would not give a good impression at the bike event scheduled for the spring.

Appreciation for Council’s approval of medical marijuana dispensaries, comment on locked gate George Schellinger thanked the council, stating he wanted to give credit where credit was due. He noted the lawsuit against CVS Pharmacy due to the opioid epidemic and applauded the council’s approval of medical marijuana dispensaries. He also discussed the locked park gates, asking for possible reasons why they might be closed (for example, a lack of staff) and echoed the concerns about the park bathrooms.

Easement changes in preparation for underground power lines This article reviews the Duke Energy – Presentation of Targeted Underground Project on the Nov. 19 Brooksville City Council Agenda.

At the Nov. 19 Brooksville Council Meeting, Ginger Broslat, Duke Senior Public Engagement Specialist for the Targeted Undergrounding Program, explained that Duke Energy will be investing more than $25 billion over the next ten years to move power lines from overhead to underground. Following a ten-year study, Duke Energy has identified areas where they will begin the energy grid improvements.

The purpose for the presentation was to request new easements to be signed so the work can be scheduled and begun.

Ron Kennedy, a technical consultant for Duke Energy, stated that the two properties proposed as the initial locations, did not have easements already.

Kemerer noted that there were other lots owned by private citizens and asked if easements were needed for each one. Kennedy stated that obtaining those easements were in progress but could not guarantee that each property owner would agree. The width of the easement is suggested at ten feet, with five feet on each side of where Duke would place the underground lines, but Kennedy

stated that surveys would be conducted prior to the project beginning.

Kemerer asked about the clearance, or distance from other utilities in the same property. Kennedy noted that Duke puts their lines three feet below the surface and 12 inches from other utility lines. Prior to digging, they would survey and coordinate with other utilities to confirm that Duke’s lines would not interfere with previously established lines. Kennedy stated their first priority was to avoid breaking any other utility lines. Kemerer said he was more concerned with utilities that were yet to be installed.

DPW Project Manager Dowler said the sanitation/ sewer line was 5-7 feet below the surface. For Duke to bury their line on the vacant lots, they will have to plan ahead to future construction needs. Kennedy and Dowler discussed line placement and whether a future homeowner would need a lift station installed if there was little/no gravity flow. Kennedy did not want to get into specifics, as each homeowner’s needs could be different. The lines could be moved laterally so that the sewer

line was not impacted.

DPW’s response was to be cautious about the vacant lots. While Kemerer agreed with the idea, he needed more information on the potential solutions.

City Attorney Becky Vose stated she did look over the easement agreement and was uncomfortable with the wording as the burden is placed on the homeowner to pay for any adjustments in line placement. She suggested adding a statement in the easement agreement that if the lines must be moved due to a problem, the utility would pay the cost to move it. As utilities are generally installed in the right of way, they have room to make the adjustment. Kennedy stated that the utilities are placed in the front (street side) of the property versus the back of the property due to ease of access and safety. Kemerer asked Vose to work out the details with Duke’s legal team to protect homeowners, otherwise he had no issues with the easement.

Erhard agreed.

Bernardini recalled working for AT&T and having observed that on ACL Street phone lines are already buried, but on Rail-

road Place, the lines are on poles owned by Duke.

Kennedy stated they were still working out details with other utilities/users in the area. Bernardini asked for clarification on the $1.00 payment from Duke for the easement, wondering if that was all they would get…just $1.00.

Vice-Mayor Robert Battista followed up on Kemerer’s comments relating to the need to work out the details legally, and to Bernardini’s knowledge of other utilities that will need to be considered. “I think this is premature,” Battista said.

Broslat stated they encourage, but do not require, other utilities to partner with them. Previously, homeowners had to bear the cost of having the lines placed underground, but Duke is offering this to promote better reliability of their product and faster resolution if there is a problem.

Kemerer made a motion to direct the city attorney to work with Duke Energy to adjust the wording of the easement agreement. Battista seconded the motion.

Rock Ridge Phosphate Trail: a promotional opportunity for Brooksville This article reviews the Rock Ridge Phosphate Trail presentation item on the Nov. 19, 2018 Brooksville City Council Agenda.

A promotional website has been created, http:// visitrockridgetrail.com, which features nearby areas with a historical link to phosphate mining, accessible by bike through the Withlacoochee State Trail and Good Neighbor Trail.

Historic places, activities and natural areas of Brooksville, Dunnellon, Inverness and Floral City are featured in an online map. A blog to showcase local businesses is planned. Representatives from the City of Inverness spoke to the Brooksville City Council on the possibilities for joint marketing.

Inverness City Manager Frank DiGiovanni stated that the goal is to create interest in bringing together communities with a common marketing theme. He mentioned the Good Neighbor Trail and the Withlacoochee Trail and the excitement that is evident in Brooksville.

DiGiovanni stated this idea began in 2013 with the goal of making Inverness more than a destination for day-trip visitors, to make it a multi-day event for families and cyclists who enjoy nature, good food and history.

“It (phosphate mining) came and went quickly, but we were able to preserve where we are and who we are because it was a railroad track.”

The track was removed and paved, and now there is the 46-milelong nature trail. Other drawing points include antique shops, family owned (not chain) restaurants and places of interest in each town from Brooksville up to Dunnellon. DiGiovanni maintains that if there is a way to market the area to encourage people to stay for several days up and down the line, it can “generate a pulse…some excitement.” While this is not the only way, it is one way to pull people into the community, he said. This will be a benefit to small business which relies on the

influx of new and repeat customers.

Elizabeth (Liz) Fernley, Inverness City Marketing Director, stated her involvement in the project began in 2016 with discussions with the cities of Brooksville, Floral City and Dunnellon to describe what made each city unique and their synergy with one another. A Visit Florida grant allowed them to design a website and brochure. They noticed that there were many more things that connected the four cities than they realized.

The project has reached the second phase, where they will revise and refine the maps and points of interest. Bloggers on the website use social media to highlight businesses to be featured. The web-

site is ready to launch, DiGiovanni said, and Brooksville businesses have been interviewed and are excited.

Since Brooksville is relatively new to the Withlacoochee trail, the city can expect to continue to see a steady increase in the downtown area. Cyclists will ride 30-40 miles a day as a warmup, he said, and with Brooksville only a few miles off the trail, the city is close enough to draw even more visitors. Showcasing Brooksville’s architecture, history and businesses will bring repeat visitors especially as they are connected to the other cities along the trail. And not just cyclists, but families who will come back again and again. “It becomes a tourism market,” Di-

Giovanni said.

After sharing a portion of a video blog about a new restaurant in Inverness, DiGiovanni recommended that the council review the information and consider working with Ferney and her office to showcase Brooksville and which events, activities and businesses to market.

Inverness has matched the $5,000 grant from Visit Florida to provide staff and manage the website. If Brooksville decides to participate, the cost would be less than $5,000, DiGiovanni said.

seriously and the trail links both Brooksville and Inverness. The idea is to link the cities into a community that would benefit all of them.

Battista spoke highly of DiGiovanni and his vision for Inverness. As the City Manager for nearly 30 years, DiGiovanni has helped Inverness grow and prosper. Battista recalled a meeting in 2016 in which DiGiovanni laid out a plan for Inverness to

make them a destination that visitors will want to return to multiple times.

Now, demolition has begun on the next phase.

“We’ve got a gem,” DiGiovanni said. “Let’s work together and prosper.” Acknowledging that a city council meeting was not the place to discuss the details, he suggested that the council direct staff to work with Inverness staff. To finalize the brochure and website, DiGiovanni requested that Brooksville provide input as they would like to begin distribution in about 12 months.

Kemerer made a motion to direct staff to begin aggressively working with DiGiovanni’s staff.

Bernardini seconded the motion, and it passed 4-0.

The goal of Skipper’s online fundraiser was to raise $1700 and a total of $2020 was raised.

The new address for Hernando High will be 111 Ernie Chatman Run. Officially, the street name changes to Ernie Chatman Run on Dec. 6 at 12:01am, but it is unclear when the new Hernando High School address will take effect.

Skipper says that they are working on a dedication for the new sign plates to take place Dec. 8 before the Christmas parade.

Funding for sewer projects needed in Brooksville This article reviews the Regular agenda item, Legislative Initiatives Nov. 19, 2018 Brooksville City Council Agenda.

Consent Agenda The council discussed the consent agenda and Bernardini requested to pull item #2 (Budget Amendments).

Regarding item #3 (People Ready Day Labor), Kemerer asked if competitive bidding was needed, as there was no memo stating a plan to piggyback using an existing contract. Dowler was called to the podium to respond but stated he didn’t have an answer. This item was tabled. With item #1 remaining (minutes from meetings on 10/01/18), Kemerer moved to approve it and Battista seconded. The motion passed 4-0.

Budget Amendments Bernardini stated he asked to pull this item because he needed further explanation about some of the changes, and he did not recall council discussion about them.

He felt more comfortable voting with more information and asked if it could be discussed another time. Council explained that they were at the statutory 60-day time frame for approval. Battista moved to approve the budget and Kemerer seconded. The motion passed 3-1, with Bernardini opposed.

Regular Agenda Resolution 2018-21 – Verifying Election Results City Clerk Jennifer Battista described the three items on the ballot. Certified results were received from the Supervisor of Elections on 11/19/18.

- An election was held to fill the council seat vacated

by Natalie Kahler. Pat Brayton received the most votes and will take the seat on 12/03/18.

- Residents were asked to decide whether to continue adding fluoride to the city’s water, and the voters approved it.

- Residents were asked to approve an amendment regarding how citizens can propose amendments to the City Charter, since the language was confusing.

Voters approved the change.

Bernardini made the motion to approve the certified election results and Battista seconded. By roll call, all council members voted to approve the certified results.

Ordinance 898 – Update to Small Cell Communication Facilities City Attorney Becky Vose stated that the Vose Law Firm and the City Planning Department worked to create an ordinance pertaining to fees and installation of small cell communication towers. Since then, the FCC has made changes to their requirements, limiting the discretion that municipalities have.

The updated ordinance reflects these changes and needs to be approved within 180 days from the date the FCC guidelines were provided. Vose said a resolution to set fees (also determined by the FCC) will be presented to the council. The information was presented to council, but no action was required.

Vose suggested the first reading could be at the next scheduled meeting.

Kemerer asked for clarification relating to a section on red light cameras. Brooksville City Planner Steve Gouldman stated that the regulations for red light cameras will be removed and replaced with small cell communications language.

Based on the fee schedule provided by the FCC, Kemerer expressed concern as to the budget impact. Vose agreed that it was difficult to know if the city would make or lose money at this point, but said the fees were assumed to be “reasonable.” The city cannot pass high consulting fees along to the cell companies, for example.

Gouldman stated that the requests for towers will go through the building permit process, and fees involved with that are not unreasonable and can be used for comparison purposes. The FCC regulation is effective across the board, regardless of the size of the municipality, and cited locations such as New York City or Chicago as having to abide by the same fee structure.

Kutney asked about cost recovery. Vose restated that if the city hires someone with a high fee, the city cannot charge this fee to the communications company. Responding to Kemerer, Gouldman stated that the building department has reviewed the regulations and felt there should be no problem with working within the new fee structure.

Bernardini made the motion to have a first reading at the 12/03/18 meeting. Kemerer seconded the motion, and the motion passed 4-0.

City Manager Mark Kutney introduced Shawn Foster and Sam Wagoner from Sunrise Consulting, the firm that represents the interests/needs of Brooksville and Hernando County to the Florida legislature.

In addition to the information presented in the agenda packet, Kutney stated that council members were provided maps, additional funding costs, etc. The project packet is virtually the same as last year.

“He (Debbie’s father) started planting Christmas trees and at one time he was the largest farm in central Florida,” added Debbie’s husband Tony Harris.

Sand pines and southern red cedar are grown at the Ergle Farm and popular out of state trees like Douglas and Fraser Firs are imported.

“Southern red cedar is the traditional Florida Christmas tree,” Tony Harris said. “When I was growing up that was the only tree I knew as Christmas trees.”

Red cedars fell out of favor in Florida because they are itchy and the Douglas and Fraser Firs have become more readily available.

The red cedar can grow 25 to 45 feet tall, spreading 20 to 30 feet wide.

Rows and rows of them are available for those interested in experiencing a Florida Christmas tree tradition.

Customers can grab a saw, walk acres of beautiful fresh Florida Christmas trees and choose which tree is right for their family holiday.

The farm also offers Christmas trees grown in

containers.

Long time customers from all over the state visit the Ergle Christmas tree farm every year to purchase their tree.

“We build our business on customer service,” Tony said. “We want every customer to be happy, that is the most important thing…. when people come here they leave happy.”

This Weeks Recipe Homemade Peppermint Sugar Cookies Ingredients ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 ½ cups sugar 2 ½ cups all purpose flour 14 table spoons butter (room temp) ½ cup crushed peppermint candies 2 teaspoon peppermint extract 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 2 large eggs

Directions Pre-heat oven to 350. Put oven rack in middle.

Place parchment paper on baking sheets.

Mix flour, baking powder and salt together well in bowl.

Mix in your butter and sugar on med. Speed until fluffy, add your eggs one at a time.

Add vanilla and peppermint extract and mix with blender until combined completely.

If your dough is soft put in your refrigerator for about 1 hour until firmed up.

When dough is ready, place about a ¾ cup sugar in a separate dish.

You could use a cookie scoop or just judge yourself, uniformed size balls and then roll in the sugar. Place balls two inches apart on your baking sheets. Use a drinking glass to flatten you cookie dough balls. Hint: butter bottom of glass. Flatten about ¾ inch, then sprinkle your crushed peppermint candy over each flattened cookie.

Bake until edges beginning to brown, but your centers are still soft. About 10/15 minutes.

Your could serve warm or cool completely.

These are among the more than sixty Christmas Bird Counts being planned in Florida, and the thousands scheduled throughout the United States and other countries. Christmas Bird Counts have occurred annually for 119 years, and are the longest running citizen-science bird project. Every year volunteers count birds within designated areas, providing important data to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation action.

The Brooksville Christmas Bird Count will occur on Saturday, December 15, and will count the quantity and variety of bird species within a circle with a 7.5 mile radius from Bystre Lake. Christmas Collection for Guardian Ad Litem Children The Betty Lykes Stringer chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy is in the process of collecting Christmas toys for Children in the Guardian ad Litem program. Dec. 12th features Cameron Jaggard on “From the Coast to the Deep: Protecting Florida’s Marine Ecosystems” Join us for the Sierra Club Adventure Coast Meet Up Wednesday, December 12th with Cameron Jaggard as we discover Florida’s forage fish, ancient corals, and seagrass savannas during a talk entitled “From the Coast to the Deep: Protecting Florida’s Marine Ecosystems.”

Cameron Jaggard is a principal Associate for U.S. Oceans, Southeast for The Pew Charitable Trusts. He will provide an overview of Pew, the importance of healthy marine and coastal ecosystems to Florida, and highlight two recent initiatives to protect ancient, deep-sea corals in the Gulf of Mexico and support new research on small, but important and mysterious forage fish and their relationship to predators, habitat, and environmental disturbances in Florida.

Cameron is outreach coordinator for Pew’s efforts to conserve Florida’s ocean resources, including forage fish, based in North Palm Beach. Before joining Pew, Cameron worked as an environmental consultant in Florida and with the Institute for Fisheries Resources in San Francisco, supporting protection and restoration efforts for salmon and their river habitat along the U.S. West Coast from California to Alaska.

The City of Brooksville Beautification Board’s Annual Contest will be in full-swing again this year. All eyes will be looking at arrangements within our City limits to determine the winner for the holiday’s best decorative display. Three days before Thanksgiving, Springstead held their first Glory Days Preseason Classic.

Central High School tipped off against Hudson, bringing the Bears a win against the Cobras, final score 69 to 53. Palm Bay (near Melbourne) took on Wiregrass (Pasco County) in the second game.

Wiregrass dominated Palm Bay throughout the game.

The final score was Wiregrass 68, Palm Bay 34.

Hosting team Springstead Eagles took on Minneola from Lake County in a close matchup that left the Eagles with a 3 point loss: Minneola 60, Springstead 57.

Central faced Palm Bay with an intense finale to the fourth quarter. Palm Bay made a 3 pointer side court shot on the buzzer ending the game with Central 63, Palm Bay 62.

Minneola took on Hudson with a 16 point win in the highest scoring game of the tournament: Minneola 97, Hudson 81.

In the final game Springstead held strong but loss to Wiregrass who had some quick movements on the court and 3 pointers.

Scrimmage games are essential for any sports team, not only for the coaches to determine how to fine tune their players’ strengths and to balance any weaknesses but for the players to establish an athletic build and to solidify fundamentals both individually and as a team.

Springstead tipped off with Fivay for the first home game on Nov. 26 and Central challenged Pasco on Nov. 28 on the Bears’ home court.

Here at the end of November, deer season has reached its midpoint and a lot of hunters, having venison resting nicely in their freezers, are turning to small game. Now, it’s not a huge secret that when folks think of small game, the first thing to pop into our minds, is squirrel hunting. But, squirrels are number two on the target list during the small game season on many of our local Wildlife Management Areas. Hogs, have taken over the number one spot and there are a ton of them waiting to be invited home for your next barbecue!

Two of the WMAs in our area, which have ended deer hunting for the year and now are open exclusively for small game season, are the Croom Wildlife Management Area and the Homossassa Wildlife Management Area. Both are loaded with wild hogs and can afford you some excellent hunting, just remember there are no centerfire rifles to be on the properties during small game season.

That doesn’t really limit your hunt; shotguns, muzzleloaders, handguns, archery and crossbows are still very much effective.

I’ve taken hogs with each and plan to again, although my personal favorite tool for the big piggies is a 60# draw recurve bow.

Junior quarterback Fabian “2Fabe” Burnett would add roughly 47 yards on the ground and added 60 yards in the air.

The game started off with NCT having to punt the football away, and on their first drive, North Marion quarterback Corey Wilsher found receiver Jyron Gilmore up the near sideline, and despite incredible coverage by the Sharks secondary, was able to score one of the Colts’ three passing

touchdowns on the night.

Weston and the Sharks would answer right back, scoring from 11 yards out, but would miss the ensuing PAT, thus allowing the Colts to keep the lead.

After the Colts would rack off 10 unanswered points, Weston and the Sharks offense would go 74 yards to cap off the half, utilizing the fabled fake spike to catch their opponents off guard.

Wilsher’s third touchdown of the night came on the opening drive of the second half, but it didn’t come without help. On third down from inside the Sharks 25, it appeared as though NCT would come away with a stop and force a field goal attempt, but they were flagged for roughing the passer, giving North Marion a fresh set of downs. Wilsher would find his target on the very next play.

When all seemed like North Marion would cruise to victory, the

Sharks proved once again why their best football this season came in the second half. Using Weston and Burnett, NCT would chew up the clock before Weston would punch in the third score.

And following the onside kick attempt, the Sharks attempted to get down into field goal range, and while they did, it wasn’t without some help.

What appeared to be a game-winning touchdown pass from Burnett to Cai Teague fell incomplete, but the officials ruled pass interference, giving NCT one final chance.

Johns didn’t shy away from pointing out the obvious: “We had the pass interference in the end zone there at the end.

(North Marion) did the right thing with the interference or we would’ve

scored there,” he said.

“All that aside, we had other opportunities during the game. (North Marion) never stopped us. We just stopped ourselves.”

The Sharks season now ends, and despite not reaching the desired result, they performed admirably throughout a tough region, and earned their spot in the final.

This squad faced adversity multiple times, yet somehow came out on the other side, just showing the mentality of this team.

The Sharks will return Burnett and Teague for their senior campaigns, and with Weston finishing his high school career just shy of 3,000 rushing yards, looks like Isaac Edwards will be taking up the mantle.

And, like the Sharks have preached this season, it’s all about the #TechWay.

The Citrus WMA and Chassahowitzka WMA are two of the top choices for whitetails if you haven’t gotten your buck yet. And, Citrus especially, has been producing some fantastic bucks this year. I’m aware of four that will meet or exceed the state’s minimum of one-hundred inches of antler to gain entry into the record book.

I had made such a prediction about the buck herd in the Citrus WMA in an article last month for Woods N Water Magazine and had a gentleman, whom I chanced to meet while he was

checking in a monster eleven point at the check station, upset with me for divulging the info.

I was asked, “Why in the heck would you be telling people this place is full of big bucks?”

Again, this was as he was checking in a book qualifier…. All I could answer, while pointing to his tailgate was, “Did I lie?”

Following a 7-0 start to the season, the South Florida Bulls finished their season losing five straight games and look like a completely different team than before. A team that was once a contender for a January bowl game and recognition in the top 25 polls now will be getting a smaller bowl bid, and it might not even be a game they can win.

Really though, USF has been shaky all season. Three of their wins came after entering the fourth quarter behind and their defense has never really gotten anywhere. Barely escaping Tulsa with a one point victory should have been the wake up call they needed, but then they only beat a one win UCONN by eight, leading to their first loss, a 21 point spanking at Houston.

It was there where the wheels pretty much came off. Following the Houston debacle came a bigger embarrassment, losing by 26 to Tulane at home.

While neither of these teams are bad, a quality USF team should have at the very least made it competitive.

This is a team that has given up 378 points this season, 96 more than last year. Adding to that is

the fact that they have only scored 350 points in total, 109 fewer that 2017’s output. The Bulls have regressed both offensively and defensively, and they are collapsing at the worst time of the season.

This is not how the season was expected to go. Following up their 11 win 2016 with a 10 win 2017, the Bulls were supposed to contend for the American Athletic Conference title and a big game in January with the Power 5 conference teams. A Peach Bowl game on Jan. 1st was the dream. UCF was going to be a tough team to beat but that was supposed to be it. It was going to be a battle of the Florida behemoths in the AAC to end the regular season, the biggest and most important “War on I-4” in recent memory. Instead, USF limped into that game and lost 38-10.

The 7-0 start made USF Bowl eligible, so they will play in a bowl game. This season was the fastest they ever did so, besting last season by a few days. Now though, the Bulls will have to wait and see what bowl they get invited to, and hopefully with the time and practice available to them the team can get it together and look like the USF Bulls they were expected to be.

Plant protection preparations for when the real winter hits

It’s that time of year again.

The long sleeve shirts come out of their boxes. The patio actually seems inviting. The baristas stop assuming you want your drink iced. Yes, the first taste of autumn in Florida is upon us.

Well, it was. By the time you read this it’ll probably be in the 80’s again, but that won’t last forever.

This year, forecasters are calling for a warmer than average winter across the United States, with a weak El Nino fueling increased rain in the southeast. While “warmer than average” may sound inviting, it can actually be quite dangerous for both commercial farmers and backyard gardeners. When temperatures are warm, plants may not get enough time in cool air to stimulate dormancy.

When a freeze does come – and statistically speaking, it absolutely will – these fully awake plants are much more vulnerable to damage. This pattern of warm winters with strong freezes interspersed has become more frequent over the past few years and was the source of moderate losses in the Florida blueberry crop this year and heavy losses to the Georgia peach crop the year prior.

plants. Potted plants should be brought inside when freezing temperatures are expected. For plants that cannot be brought in, covering plants with a sheet can protect from damage in a light freeze. When using a cover, ensure that the cover reaches all the way to the ground to trap the heat from the soil and allow it to radiate upward to the foliage.

Remember that it is very important that covers be removed in the morning when temperatures rise above freezing as any moisture on the sheet from rain or dew will evaporate in the sun and actually cool the plant below the outside temperature.

also take the opportunity now to test their freeze protection plans. Overhead sprinkler lines should be flushed and clogged or broken nozzles should be repaired or replaced. Growers using row covers should pull their equipment from storage and place it in an easily accessible area. Stored row covers make inviting homes for rodents and damaged covers should be replaced. should make any necessary repairs to torn plastic. Those using heating systems like a kerosene heater should test their devices, ensure that they have enough fuel on hand, and also ensure that they have a venting solution in place as the fumes from heaters can damage crops.

So once the Thanksgiving leftovers are gone, the Christmas decorations come out, and I or my sister-in-law finish wearing a UF or FSU t-shirt for a day (we have an annual bet), take a moment to consider how your foliage friends will fare this holiday season.

lot of companies are using computer algorithms in an attempt to maximize the amount of money they make.

It is important to pay attention to avoid being taken advantage of by these companies.

A low-cost airline in Europe was recently found to have added into their seating algorithm a clause where they identified passengers with the same surname and purposely separated them. The airline was aware that families would pay more to sit together and attempted to exploit this by splitting them up and then charging them more to sit together. This way they could offer a low fare but get you to purchase add-ons. They were purposely making a situation where passengers were less comfortable in a hope that they would spend more money.

Many travel sites will only offer you the best price on your first visit. If you leave the site and come back, they no longer show you the lowest price.

They do this to prevent you from shopping around. If you go and check several sites and come back you will no longer see the best fare, so next time you will be incentivized to book a good fare as soon as you see it and not shop around. A way to work around this is to use different browsers or use your browser’s incognito mode when you are browsing fares online.

Some large retailers use software which identifies the products in which customers pay close attention to the price.

On Saturday night, the little firehouse on Shoal Line Blvd. was a place for Hernando Beach residents to enjoy the annual holiday tradition.

The day began with a creative selection of arts and crafts that showcased local artistic talent and holiday spirit.

As the sun dipped into the horizon, visitors awaited the lighting ceremony, a tradition that Capt. Tim LaRoche enjoyed when he worked for the Spring Hill Fire Rescue.

“We had a really good thing that was going on at Station 2 (Spring Hill). We would do the lighting ceremony, bring in Santa Claus and fun activities for the kids,” Capt. Tim LaRoche said. “It was a good time, the public loved it and looked forward to it every year.”

Firefighters decorated the Hernando Beach Firehouse this year with a wonderful display of holiday lights. When the switch was turned on, faces in the crowd lit up with excitement.

Hot cocoa and cookies were provided and Santa stopped by on a fire truck expressing his holiday cheer.

“It's an opportunity for us to say thank you; thank you for just open arms and letting us come in here and serve them,” Capt. Tim LaRoche said. “The community is awesome, we love being here and we’re happy to be a part of all of this.”

Algorithms are being used to squeeze the most amount of money out of the consumer. It is important to be able recognize when this is happening. Probably the best way to do this is look at the total amount you are spending. If the flight was $99, but you had to pay $50 for a carry on, and $50 to sit next to your kid, it may not have been the cheapest option. The same goes for great deals in a store.

Be aware that other things you purchase may cost more. Often the store is counting on you picking up a few other things that are overpriced while you are there.

Our daughter, Haley, who claims this as her favorite, puts it this way, ‘It’s my childhood in a bowl.’ It is full of nostalgia and memories and-though there is room for personal expression and creativity to some degree...there are very, VERY, specific things that must be present for a Cajun gumbo to pass the test in Cajun country. We knew that with us being from out-of-town that our entry might be viewed with suspicion-even though I am a Louisiana native. We also knew it’d be a long shot that we’d even receive any acknowledgement for our efforts being that we were surrounded by so many excellent cooks/chefs that know what the judges are looking for. We really had no expectations attached to the outcome as we felt it an honor just to participate with so many skilled in the culinary arts and be so warmly welcomed by all the veterans there.”

In the end, all of their hard work paid off and the Rogers family took home several accolades as well as great memories. Their eldest daughter Haley placed first in the 5k Roux Run, while youngest daughter Patyn, 9, and son Brady, 15 took third place in the youth gumbo competition. Southern Harmony also won 2nd place for Best of Show.

The Southern Harmony team then waited with nervous anticipation to hear from the judges about their gumbos. Cindy recounted, “All around us- veteran teams are having delivered to them these signs indicating they had made it to the finals. The signs were met with hoops and hollers as each team celebrated being selected as goodenough to move-up to the next round of judging. We celebrated with them as it was genuinely exciting to see their hard work rewarded! And then we waited some more...”

Eventually, the Southern Harmony team received their very own finalist sign.

“This would have been exciting no matter which gumbo entry it was for, but it was especially so because this Finalist Award was for the chicken and sausage version,” Cindy said.

She further explained, “This is the most traditional (it is nearly a religion in Louisiana). It is the one with the the strictest criteria and the one that would be met with the harshest scrutiny. So, naturally, we followed the example of the locals and did some hoopin’ and hollerin’ of

our own!!! Whoo Hooo!!!”

While Southern Harmony did not place in the top 3 for the chicken and sausage gumbo, Cindy remarked, “We left happy and feeling accomplished. With so many skilled and talented teams, we were honored to be selected as finalists from among them! Time does not slow down for anyone

Thank Goodness: ‘The new normal’ does not have to be permanent The so-called ‘new normal’ was a rationalizing of anything that deteriorated in quantity or quality. It was the opposite of focusing on a specific problem and solving it. Instead it was an approach to accept individual and national lower standards and expectations. It is a lazy man’s way of managing an organization or one’s life.

This uninspired method of leadership in home, school and government is a ‘don’t worry, be happy ‘ life approach.

Your life will go on, just do not think about what was or could be but learn to accommodate yourself to the lowest common denominator of existence. These dismal standards and expectations are often repeated in our school system. The academic grade inflation has made report cards almost meaningless.

Severe violent acts are out rightly ignored or have been assigned such weak consequences that the punishment does not act like a deterrent and often is a joke to acting-out students.

Parents have dumbed down their standards and expectations for their own children. Preschool children are no longer being potty trained at 18 months to two years old. Instead now they are not prepared to complete this milestone until 3 to 5 years old without the parents being seen as less than competent. Today’s parents are less concerned with assisting their child to be independent. Most do not comprehend the small window of opportunity to teach their offspring behaviors, skills, and moral values they need to be full functioning adults.

This lazy interaction with children, students and employees of not being in charge leaves individuals vacant vessels of how to be positive and properly react with others. This poor preparation has negatively affected the workforce on all business levels.

Poorly trained and motivated adults have resulted in inferior customer service and too expensive products. Foreign nations have stepped up to take advantage of economic opportunities worldwide. They have improved their country’s standard of living through cheaper labor costs with more motivated workers. US corporations have outsourced more jobs, which has led to more work going overseas. Employment opportunities have gone to other countries and so have high salaries. Divorce is continuing to rise and while marriage rates continue to fall. Children’s counter productive actions will get more and more outrageous in school and in the job market.

According to the ‘new normal,’ we Americans should accept this new reality. Employment opportunities with high pay will be rare and never return.

College tuition will continue to rise for students so they will have more opportunities for loans that increase debt. Millenials will continue to live in their parent’s basement. Do not worry, it is the ‘new normal.’

The ‘new normal’ is ‘leading from behind.’ President Obama verbalized his foreign policy as leading from behind during his first term in office.

He believed that the US leadership in the world was negative since some nations jealously viewed the US as an arrogant and self-righteous bully.

Whatever happens that is not positive, can be justified by stressing that no one can reverse the negative results especially when one does not expect improvement. Tree Dogs My wife got new furniture the other week, couch, coffee table, and end tables. I only recently felt comfortable enough to remove my thigh, knee, and shin guards while walking around the furniture she bought three years ago, and now I have to suit up again!

Different dimensions, different corners; it’s like the boobytraps in the third Indiana Jones movie. I might have to put a cable box in my office, complete with DVR, so I never, ever have to go in the living room.

Hey, and maybe a little fridge and tabletop stove.

And to make it worse, now we don’t have a dog couch (love seat) which the dogs were allowed by my wife to sit on. In fact, the long couch is where the dog couch used to be, and where the long couch was is now just a window and bare drapes and a weird tall, long, narrow glass-top thing of a table.

I don’t know when or where she got it; it was just suddenly there.

I asked my wife how she was going to train the dogs to stay off the new couch, and she said she didn’t know. I researched canine tasers and doggie prods, but no one makes those, and both would require my presence at all times. Besides,

By VINCENT CARDEGIN I’m pretty sure they won’t get on the couch when I’m there, but I’m equally sure they will when I’m not. So I need a deterrent for then.

There are animal repellents, but I’ve smelled them leaking through their caps at Exwork, and I won’t use that stench on furniture even as a last resort. I thought I might buy a dozen or so little mouse traps, cover the seats and the tops of the back cushions with those, and teach the dogs that way.

But no, I’d forget and sit down. I’ve been snapped on fingers before, but I’ve never had them clamped on my earlobes, eyebrows, nose flaps, and lips, and I don’t want to. And that would be too much trouble setting them up anyway.

While grumbling to myself about change and how I don’t like it, I suddenly envisioned turning my wife’s pets into tree dogs.

I could build them a highrise house in the woods.

It would have a sun room, an enclosed area with a small AC, say a 50 BTU (do they make those?) a food room,

But a tree house isn’t going to happen. So I guess I’ll never sit anywhere in the living room but on my recliner, and I’ll Febreze it every time I come home from a store. (My wife has assured me that she will not tolerate my peeing around the chair to mark my territory.)

But masking the dog odor won’t really work long term. I need to get a handheld upholstery cleaner, a wet scrubber-vacuum and thereby unsoil my chair every time I…no, no, that too is too much trouble. Boy, do I really want her dogs to live in backyard trees.

There is nothing wrong with trying to look young and we agree that dieting and exercise would surely be a healthy and positive lifestyle but the hourglass only contains so much sand. As the days keep ticking away, we are reminded to not put off until tomorrow what we can do today because we are not sure how many tomorrows we will have. If you want a big juicy steak for heaven’s sake go have one. If you have thought about helping someone or have a desire to say or give them something, do not fall into the someday excuse and never do it. If you feel a burden to write a letter, make a call, invite someone to dinner, or ask someone to forgive you for something you did or said, by all means, do it today. Delay is a sure way to miss a golden opportunity.

There are certain aspects that I miss from my youth like being free from worries, along with having boundless energy and vitality.

Now that I’m older, I cannot see as clear, I get winded pretty easy and sometimes I cannot remember names. I love to take naps and when I watch Jeopardy, the answers are given before I can even think. Then there are the mistakes I wish I could forget.

I realize it does no good to live in regret but I cannot help but wonder what could have been. I recall being more occupied with the present than concerned with the future and I can only imagine how much more I could have done if I knew then what I know now. The past is gone and even if I were given a do-over, I would probably make more of a mess than I did the first time. God has always been there for me and all in all, even without winning the lottery, I’m happy with where I am in my journey. Sure, we dream about what we could do with large amounts of money but then we snap back into the real world and realize the most important meaning of life is our personal relationship with God. As the scripture says in Matthew chapter 16, “For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

I am not rich by any means but I am also not poor and there again is the compassionate and amazing grace of our heavenly Father.

As you and I face the prospects of growing older, we will ask ourselves questions like, ‘What should I be doing now to prepare for a time when I cannot take care of myself?’ Along with these practical decisions are also considerations for our spiritual life that speaks bluntly and boldly to the deepest recesses of our heart.

Truth does not intend to be mean or cruel but desires to awaken us to the possibilities of purpose. The fact is, without change, we will be then what we are now. If you are not becoming a person of faith, love, and kindness now, you will not be that type of a person then.

If you are a negative and grumpy person now, you will not suddenly become a positive and generous individual then. If you are not learning, growing, praying and developing an intimate personal relationship with God today, unfortunately, you will not walk with him then. We will change when the agony of conviction to be transformed becomes greater than the apathy and contentment to stay the same. Charles Bancroft wrote this encouraging poem, “God loves the aged.

He gives them greater visions than the young: He puts words of wisdom on their tongue: And keeps His presence ever by their side, from dawn to dusk, and on through eventide.

God helps the aged. Within their home, his spirit dwells: Their mellow hearts are touched like chiming bells: He calms their fears, then worries disappear because they know his help is always near. God keeps the aged.

With hearts of gold, and silver tinted hair: earnestness, and greater faith in prayer: He keeps them as a shepherd guards his sheep, til in his fold they gently fall

The Joyners live in Brooksville but run United Speed World in Tampa. Their son Westin has Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida means “split spine” in Latin. It is a condition where a baby’s neural tube does not fully close. This causes the backbone of the the baby to not fully form.

In the United States, Spina Bifida effects about 1500 to 2000 out of 4 million babies born per year in the United States.

The $26,000 was donated to the Shriners Hospital for Children-Tampa. The Joyners made a great contribution. They had help from Brooksville with Deep South BBQ supplying food for the event.
