The interesting story of how Trilby got its name by ROCCO MAGLIO HERNANDO SUN WRITER

As you drive through Spring Lake you pass Old Trilby Road. The road is named for a town in present day Pasco. How Trilby got its name is an interesting story. Jeff Miller, historian and retired Pasco County teacher, mentioned this fascinating story of Trilby at a recent West Pasco Historical Society See TRILBY, Page 14

Atlantic Coast Line Railroad: Florida and the South, c. 1906; Circled is where the two railroad lines (in red) intersect at Trilby. Also visible is the spur to Brooksville which the town constructed for $20,000 in bonds. If the spur was not built, then the town may have ceased to exist like so many others. We started on this journey after the Hernando Today closed in November 2014. We were concerned that without a local newspaper, Hernando County residents would read about all the interesting things going on in Tampa and spend their time in Tampa. Hernando County would become a suburb of Tampa. We created a corporate structure, found a printer, figured out the layout program Indesign and developed a rough business plan. We printed our first newspaper in March 2015. The newspaper was 8 pages and had no paid ads. The first issue was a free sample, after that we charged 75 cents for the paper. Some of our first subscribers to the paper were Jan Knowles, Elsa Lampron, Frasier Mountain, Vince Vanni and Lisa MacNeil. Lisa is now a writer for the paper. We are incredibly grateful to those first brave souls who took a chance on our one year subscription at a cost of $6.60. (The paper was printed monthly at the time, so the $6.60 was for only 12 issues.) We mailed our newspaper first class and it cost over double to mail it than we received for the subscription. We joked we would make it up on volume. Eventually though, we were able to meet the post office’s requirements for periodical mail and this greatly reduced our mailing costs. The first local store to sell the newspaper was the Local Roots coffee shop in Brooksville, which is now closed. The first chain store we got the newspaper into was Speedway. We called the corporate office and Ms. Wolgemuth expressed her support of local newspapers and helped us to not only get into Speedway, but a number See FIRSTS, Page 5
