As you drive through Spring Lake you pass Old Trilby Road. The road is named for a town in present day Pasco.

We started on this journey after the Hernando Today closed in November 2014. We were concerned that without a local newspaper, Hernando County residents would read about all the interesting things going on in Tampa and spend their time in Tampa. Hernando County would become a suburb of Tampa.

We created a corporate structure, found a printer, figured out the layout program Indesign and developed a rough business plan.

We printed our first newspaper in March 2015. The newspaper was 8 pages and had no paid ads. The first issue was a free sample, after that we charged 75 cents for the paper.

Some of our first subscribers to the paper were Jan Knowles, Elsa Lampron, Frasier Mountain, Vince Vanni and Lisa MacNeil. Lisa is now a writer for the paper. We are incredibly grateful to those first brave souls who took a chance on our one year subscription at a cost of $6.60. (The paper was printed monthly at the time, so the $6.60 was for only 12 issues.)

We mailed our newspaper first class and it cost over double to mail it than we received for the subscription. We joked we would make it up on volume. Eventually though, we were able to meet the post office’s requirements for periodical mail and this greatly reduced our mailing costs.

The first local store to sell the newspaper was the Local Roots coffee shop in Brooksville, which is now closed.

The first chain store we got the newspaper into was Speedway.

We called the corporate office and Ms. Wolgemuth expressed her support of local newspapers and helped us to not only get into Speedway, but a number See FIRSTS, Page 5

Citizen’s Comments Please not that this is an abbreviated list of citizens comments Riverside Restaurant Kathy McKeen, who owns the Riverside Restaurant in Nobleton spoke to the commission about changing the current noise ordinance to require a decibel reading in order for law enforcement to issue a noise citation, rather than only receiving a complaint of “loud noise.” “We have one person in our tiny neighborhood who calls (Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO)) every time we have a band. We have received so far, three tickets totalling over $400.”

McKeen explained that since there is only one person calling in a complaint when the establishment is hosting a live band, that she believes it’s a “personal vendetta.”

McKeen told the BOCC that the band at a neighboring restaurant, River Ratz, was still able to be heard after Riverside was shut down on the weekend of October 27 due to another noise violation. McKeen said, “We could sit on our patio, and listen to (River Ratz’s) music all the way down the street.”

She also stated that the live band at Riverside plays from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Rex McKeen spoke after his wife, and offered to leave a decibel meter with the board to examine.

BOCC Chairman Steve Champion disclosed to the board that he’d spoken with the McKeens and the owners of River Ratz. Champion stated that there are two separate ordinances that tie-in to the noise ordinance, but that enacting a decibel-level as a determination would remove any subjectivity from the deputy issuing a citation.

Explanation for Tax Increase Gerald Barda asked the board to explain the recent tax increase on his property.

Supporting Comments by Riverside Cafe Owners Hernando county resident Ronald Ray identified himself as a musician who has witnessed Riverside’s early closure. Ray said, “When we were setting up … we could clearly hear the band over at River Ratz. It’s about equidistant from this man’s house who keeps making the (noise) complaint. He never calls to complain about (River Ratz), it’s only (Riverside).

It’s affected the workers that work there … We got put out of work. I also feel that without a more clearcut and defined way to address the noise ordinance, i.e. the decibel meter, it’s just too open-ended. Every time this guy calls, it’s a waste of resources.”

Flooding Reimbursement?

Joe Bruno of Spring Hill sought answers during the comments segment. Bruno reported that in In March of 2014, he experienced flooding in his home, due to an alleged county issue.

He was told by then supervisor Darrell Ross that “The county will take care of it.” He told the BOCC on this date that he has not received reimbursement for the $26,816.78 he spent to repair his home.

Bruno also stated that he filed a lawsuit, however proper procedures were not followed, and the suit could not continue.

Another RIverside Comment Charles Greenwell spoke about the Riverside issue. Greenwell, who is an attorney said he was surprised that tickets were allowed to be issued to the establishment, since the enforcement of the law without an objective standard would be deemed unconstitutional.

County Administrator Len Sossamon reported that county staff will need to be brought into the discussion. Since they were told that a mobile home is not considered a single-family home, Sossamon said, “I’m not sure if that’s the correct interpretation or not.”

Deputy County Attorney Jon Jouben added that there is a process in place that addresses challenges to interpretation of the county code. The family representatives were referred to Chris Linsbeck with Zoning and Code Enforcement, who was in the audience, indicating he could provide assistance.

Regarding Riverside: Commissioner Wayne Dukes began the response session by addressing the noise ordinances affecting the McKeen’s Riverside restaurant. Duke’s said the issue has come up several times over many years.

“I’m not going to name names because they’ve all retired. The county’s decibel machine didn’t work. And nobody had funding to fix it, and there was one in a couple of different departments. So, I think we’ve failed.” Dukes added that he agreed with Greenwell, “If we didn’t follow procedures, I think we should reimburse them, I really do.”

BOCC Chairman Steve Champion and Commissioner John Allocco did not specify the exact language, but both said that there are two opposing ordinances; one that pertains to noise level only, which is to be based on an decibel reading, and another that specifically deals with noise levels at establishments that serve alcohol. It is that ordinance that leaves it up to the discretion of the deputy responding to a complaint.

Allocco said, “Subjectivity is nice at some level, but when you’re fining people, and you’re talking about impairing people’s business, and frankly, someone in their home. Why should it make a difference if it’s an establishment that’s serving alcohol? … This ordinance is singling out a specific genre of business, and it should be consistent.” Allocco stated that he’s personally dealt with noise issues along Cortez Road that have been dealt with differently, and a decibel meter was used, and the outcomes were different.

All commissioners expressed agreement with streamlining the ordinances and removing any subjectivity.

Commissioner John Mitten added that there are applications (“apps”) that can be installed on a modern smartphone, which can measure decibel levels.

The commission agreed to defer to the legal department to sort through the language and propose any new ordinances at a future meeting. Also to be con-

Davis spoke to the board about common grass problems and management.

A traffic stop was conducted at the aforementioned address at which time contact was made with the driver Dylan Sigler and the defendant Brittany Juanis, who was sitting in the front right passenger seat. The Warrant was confirmed by operator 14 who placed a locate to Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

The defendant was taken to the Hernando County Center and placed into the custody of jail taff. I was advised by jail staff that the defendant was concealing 1 clear bag of white powdery substance weighing 1.3 grams, 1 clear bag of white powdery substance weighing .7 grams which tested positive for Cocaine, inside of her bra.

YARBROUGH, JACOB RYAN YOB: 1997 CHARGES: POSS OF MARIJUANA, POSS OF HASHISH, POSSESSION DRUG PARAPHERNALIA Arrested at: 11/07/2018 21:13 WATERFALL DR & GIBRALTER ST, SPRING HILL, FL, 34608 Arrest Summary: On 11/07/2018 at 2035 hours, I was traveling northbound on Waterfall Drive, just south of Valiant Avenue. Upon approaching the intersection of Waterfall Drive and Bern Lane, I observed a blue Ford Taurus bearing Florida tag HGYP28 approach said intersection and make a right hand turn onto Waterfall Drive without coming to a complete stop at the posted stop sign.

Due to the traffic infraction, I activated my emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop in the area of Waterfall Drive and Gibralter Street. Upon exiting my patrol vehicle to approach said vehicle, I began to smell the odor of marijuana. As I began to get closer to the vehicle, the odor of marijuana grew stronger. I then made contact with the driver, Jeffery Alan Duprie, and passenger/ defendant, Jacob Yarbrough.

I then asked Jeffery to exit the vehicle due to the smell of marijuana. Jeffery was placed into handcuffs and seated in the rear of my agency vehicle. I then approached the passenger side door and made contact with the defendant. Upon asking the defendant if there is anything in the vehicle that I should know about, the defendant stated, "I have some weed in my backpack.

It's all mine bro." I then asked the defendant to exit the vehicle and he was also placed into handcuffs and seated in the rear of my agency vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed a green and black backpack to hold a black case located on the floorboard of the front passenger seat. Inside said case was a clear plastic baggie that contained a green leafy substance, consistent with marijuana. The leafy substance was then field tested using NARCO test kit 7608, testing positive for marijuana (THC). Also found in the black case was a vape pen. The vape pen housed a cartridge that contained a yellow oily substance, consistent with Hashish Oil. There was also an additional cartridge containing what appeared to be the same oily substance. The oily substance in each cartridge was field tested using NARCO

test kit 7608, testing positive for Hashish Oil (concentrated THC).

Lastly, there was a silver metal "grinder" that contained a green leafy substance and a cigarette shaped smoking pipe (commonly used to smoke marijuana).

The aforementioned pieces of paraphernalia were swabbed and field tested using NARCO test kit 7608, testing positive for marijuana (THC).

I then made contact with the defendant in my agency vehicle and he was read his Miranda Rights from my agency issued Miranda card. The defendant advised that he understood his rights and wished to speak with me. Post Miranda, the defendant claimed ownership of the narcotics and paraphernalia. The defendant explained that the yellow oily substance is "hash oil" and the green leafy substance is "about an ounce of marijuana".

The defendant reiterated that the narcotics solely belonged to him.

Contact was made with Jeffery, who was also read his Miranda Rights. Jeffery denied ownership of the narcotics and paraphernalia. Jeffrey stated he did not know the narcotics were in the vehicle.

Due to the defendant claiming ownership of the narcotics and paraphernalia, Jeffery was released on scene. The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident.

The green leafy substance was weighted at the Hernando County Jail using a certified OHAUS scale (Serial# 47871). The green leafy substance weighed a total of 24.1 grams. The two cartridges of Hashish Oil weighed a total 16.9 grams.

The defendant was issued a court date set for 12/07/2018 at 0830 hours in Courtroom "E" at the Hernando County Courthouse. The defendant was issued a total bond of $5,000.

over the defendant leaving the residence. The victim advised that he was collecting several of the defendants items in order to assist him in leaving, it was at this point the victim advised that the defendant pulled out a black and red hammer out from his bag and told him to back up or he would stab him with claw end of the hammer. The victim advised the defendant did have the hammer raised up and towards his head. The defendant was calling 911 and hung up. The victim was in well founded fear that the defendant was going to strike him and cause serious injury to him. All the actions taken by the defendant were unwanted by the victim.

This incident was witnessed by Clayton B who was in the house with the victim at the time. Clayton's statement did collaborate with what the victim stated.

The defendant was asked about the incident and he advised only a verbal ensued when the victim began to use racial slurs towards the defendant as he was leaving.

The defendant did spontaneously utter he had a hammer in his bag which he was holding with his hand telling the victim to get back from him. The defendant did give consent to search his bag where the black and red hammer was recovered.

The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the jail without incident. It should be noted while in transport, the defendant kept advising he didn't hurt anyone and just wanted to go home. The defendant was given a court date of 12-17-18 at 0830 hours in Courtroom E of the Hernando County Court House. Per the bond schedule the defendant was issued a $2,000 bond.

GULLEY, DURRELL DONTE Jr YOB: 1998 CHARGES: AGG ASSAULT Arrested at: 11/09/2018 01:27 965 CANDLELIGHT BLVD, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34601 Arrest Summary: On 11-9-18 I responded to 965 Candlelight Apartments in regards to a 911 hang up. Upon my arrival I was flagged down by Clayton B, the witness in this case, who advised that there was trouble at apartment 54. I responded to apartment 54 where I observed a black male wearing a gray hoodie, blue pants and carrying a military style back pack, which appeared full to be, who walking away from the area of the apartment. I called out to the subject who identified himself as Durrell Gulley, the defendant, via Florida Identification card.

At this time I also observed a white male walking to me who identified himself as Cody C, the victim in this case. The victim advised that he and the defendant got into a verbal altercation

RUST, BRIAN ALLAN YOB: 1961 CHARGES: ASSAULT/BATT ON PER 65 OR OLDE Arrested at: 11/09/2018 11:26 GLASGOW RD, WEEKI WACHEE, FL, 34613 Arrest Summary: The defendant became engaged in a verbal altercation with the victim, his mother, who he lives with concerning the location of her cell phone. The argument turned physical when the defendant grabbed the victim by her right wrist with both of his hands and twisted her wrist in an opposite direction. The victim had a contusion on her right wrist, which I observed, which was consistent with her statement. The victim stated that the defendant

pushed her out of the house, by opening the front door, grabbing her by the neck and shoving out the front door. The shove and the grab of the neck was witnessed by a neighbor, Brandon Arigoni.

It should be noted that the victim is 78 years of age, and the defendant and victim are mother and son, who reside together as a family unit.

Both the witness and victim advised that the defendant made statements that he would kill the victim's dog.

While the defendant was being placed under arrest and escorted to my patrol vehicle, told the victim "you'll regret this," in a threatening tone of voice.

The defendant was then transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident.

The defendant a court date of 12/07/2018 at 0830 hours in Courtroom E. He was placed under a no bond status, due to the domestic nature of this offense.

GREER, BRIAN RAY YOB: 1987 CHARGES: POSS OF MARIJUANA Arrested at: 11/12/2018 22:24 7137 HOLIDAY DR, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 11/12/2018 I conducted a consensual encounter with the defendant who was sitting in front of the residence at 7137 Holiday Drive located in Hernando County.

While talking to the defendant I smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the area where the defendant was sitting.

The defendant was holding onto a red pack of Marlboro cigarettes when he opened the pack and grabbed a cigarette out of it. I then asked the defendant if he had any marijuana on him, the defendant stated, "No. Search me, I just smoked."

I then asked the defendant if there was anything inside of his pack of cigarettes. The defendant then stated, "No, look," then opened up the cigarettes pack and presented it towards my face and began to quickly shuffle around the cigarettes.

I immediately noticed what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette inside of the pack. The marijuana cigarette was noticeably shorter and didn't have a brown filter as the rest of the cigarettes did inside of the pack.

I then utilized narco test kit 7608 and confirmed that the marijuana cigarette tested positive for marijuana (THC).

The defendant then began to yell, "I didn't know it was in there!

I thought there was only one. I smoked the other one before you got here."

Using the Ohaus Scale located at the Hernando County Detention Center, the marijuana weighed 0.6 grams.

I then arrested the defendant and he was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center. The defendant is being held on a $1,000 bond. The defendant received a court date of 12/12/2018 in Courtroom C at 0900 hours.

The run down of Oct. 23, 2018 Regular School Board Meeting Notes from the first half of the Oct. 23, 2018 meeting.

by KATHRYN DENTATO HERNANDO SUN WRITER The meeting opened honoring Mark Johnson and Beth Narverud for their service on the school board. It was the final meeting of their elected terms.

Students from Deltona Elementary School led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced themselves to the school board afterward. Superintendent John Stratton thanked the students and told them to wave during his visit planned for Nov. 7, 2018.

School Board Chair Mark Johnson announced the topics discussed during the workshop held earlier in the day: the legislative platform and priorities, tentative approval of the control choice plan for 2019-2020, the first quarter budget update, and information on the comprehensive reading plan. Prior to the Consent Agenda approval, attorney Denis Alfonso clarified one item from the Consent Agenda: #3364 from the 10/09 regular Board meeting was really an award of a new bid. He also explained several items that were either pulled from the Consent Agenda for discussion or should have been included in the general counsel section: # 3397 (Approval of Personnel Recommendations), #3365 (Approve Renewing a bid to Central Poly Corporation for the purchase of trash can and compact liners), #3497 (which was actually #3407).

Ms. Narverud made the motion to accept the changes to the consent agenda and Ms. Prescott seconded the motion. Board Member Gus Guadagnino was absent, but the remaining members all voted yes to approve the changes.

Ryan Bradley, the Student Representative to the School Board, was absent. Riley Wilson and Sharlee Suarez, Junior Delegates from Springstead High School shared the following: • A suggestion box will be placed in central locations at every school to allow students to share suggestions with Ryan.

• There will be a poster contest to promote awareness of bullying. Delegates also plan to expand the anti-bullying program already in effect at Hernando High School.

• Committees will meet to discuss ways to make the transition to middle and high school easier for 5th and 8th grade students. Results will be shared at the next Board meeting.

Presentations Two presentations were made.

1. Jill Kolasa, Supervisor of Exceptional Student Support Services introduced Bullying Prevention Week/Acts of Kindness Week – November 12-16, 2018. Ms. Duval made the motion and Ms. Narverud seconded the motion. The motion carried with four “yes” votes. (Additionally, School Superintendent Mr. Stratton clarified that the district did not proclaim a separate awareness week for Dyslexia as the State of Florida dedicated the entire month of October to all disabilities. Mr. Johnson stated that Dyslexia was also discussed that afternoon during explanation of the comprehensive reading plan.)

2. Tammy Brinker, Executive Director of the Hernando County Education Foundation, shared donations requiring Board approval. Honoring our World War II Veterans

On Oct. 20, 2018, VFW Post 10209 in Spring Hill was brought back to the 1940’s by their very talented Auxiliary members.

From the moment you entered the building, the presence of the WWII era was felt. Guests were seen in era clothing. Vintage posters, photos, newspaper articles, WWII uniforms, right down to the Victrola playing records of the time.

Patriotic banners framed the canteen and stage. It was a step back in time to an era of history that witnessed the greatest heroes of our time.

The event served two purposes: fundraiser and dedication to local WWII veterans. The fundraiser was to raise money and awareness for the Honor Flight of West Central Florida and the Adopt a Unit, 1-185th AHB Family Readiness Program.

WWII veterans, Ralph Acquavivia, Mick KBoccia, Salvatore Fetecioni, Theodore Smith, and Jack Puleo were the honored guests of the evening. A special table was set for them displaying photos of each in their uniforms from WWII. The Bomber Girls, Bella and Brooke, added sparkle to the event, as they mingled with the guests, served the guests of honor and attendees, participated in photo ops, and cut a rug on the dance floor. They

brought much joy to all the veterans!

The event gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on our heroes of the past, and offer support and honor of those who walk amongst us that represent the courage and sacrifice of past wars and conflicts to the present, from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq, and all those in between. Theirs’ is a legacy that shapes our future, and we are thankful for their service.

On April 1, 2016 our first weekly issue was published. In May, we met all the requirements to carry public notices. This provided us another income stream and was further evidence of our growth as a newspaper.

In March of this year we adopted twin orange tabbies: William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. You could say we are only 11 Pulitizers behind the Times. Although that would be a lot of cats.

In August 2018, we received our first awards in photography- having entered the 2017 Florida Press Association Weekly newspaper contest.

Over the past four years the Hernando Sun Newspaper has grown and matured. We have gone from two people on a mission to twenty plus contributors. We have columnists, reporters, photographers, advertising representatives and many others who work behind the scenes to get the paper out.

Much of our success is due to the growing support of the community.

No State Mandate for Tablets in Schools

by Hernando Sun Staff In recent months we have heard a lot about a 2015 state technology mandate of tablets for each student. There is no such mandate from the state.

This is a big deal, because the tablet for each student was budgeted to cost $62,395,000 over the next ten years.

When the half cent sales tax for the school board was up for renewal by the voters, Barbara Behrendt of the Tampa Bay Times wrote, “The tax would be used to get tablet computers into the hands of every Hernando County student within the next three years, a needed boost because of a state mandate that students use technology.”

As recently as January 13, Chairman Nicholson of the Hernando Board of County Commissioners asked of Assistant County Administrator Ronald Pianta during a discussion of school impact fees, “For the state to mandate that they have tablets in the schools would not be a growth item then.” Mr. Pianta replied,

“I’m sure they will get up and correct me if I am wrong, the majority of that cost was included in the local option sales tax referendum. The plan was to pay for that through the local option sales tax.”

This was cited as a major reason for the need for penny for projects sales tax referendum on the November 2014 ballot. Just over 62 million dollars of the moneys earned through the half cent sales tax would go towards the one to one tablet initiative. Included in the penny for projects promotional flier was “The district’s one-to-one [tablet] initiative will also help meet state requirements for digital instructional materials.”

After the tax did not pass, Behrendt wrote, “The school district hoped the tax would pay for computer tablets for students to meet state mandated technology goals.”

Dan Dewitt of the Tampa Bay Times wrote, “Actually they [refering to tablets] will be the textbooks of the future.

Other entertainment included Cheyenne singer/songwriter Shelley Morningsong, Little Big Mountain & the Big Mountain Dancers, and Zuni performer/storyteller Fabian Fontinelle. The event took place at Florida Classic Park on Lockhart.

The Hernando County Greek Festival was a big success with a line of festival goers out the door, eager to sample the delicious greek specialty foods. Activities included a Toga Fun Run and a charity drive called to Opa Challenge to help feed hungry children in Hernando County.

The event was put on by Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church.

School Board Considers $300K to get half cent Sales Tax on the Ballot- Again.

by Hernando Sun Staff Hernando County School Board will be moving forward in their efforts to put a half cent sales tax on the ballot either jointly with another referendum or through a special election. Back in November 2014 the School Board joined with the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) in the Penny for Projects Sales Tax Referendum which voters rejected.

The school board thinks if the issue is presented to voters in a different way as a continuation of the current tax rate (6.5%) then the voters may

be more agreeable towards it. School Board Chairman Gus Guadagnino said that “I truly believe that if we were by ourselves...we were going to go out there and tell the citizens of Hernando County don’t change anything just leave everything in place, and

by Julie Maglio The Arc Nature Coast now has a new computer lab thanks to the Kiwanis of Spring Hill and Kiwanis Florida Foundation. Godfrey Eason of Kiwanis Spring Hill applied and was approved for a matching grant from the Kiwanis Florida Foundation. Each of the two organizations contributed $5,000.00 for the purchase of computer equipment. They now have a state of the art

media room, complete with 12 computer stations, 3 lap tops, an integrated printer and a large screen computer with a wireless keyboard. Walter Butler, owner of Computer Butler worked diligently to locate and install the most up to date equipment possible.

Mr. Eason is also working to acquire a grant for an additional 20 laptops.

That is an entirely different campaign than to go out there and say if you want your school to get the money that they need, you need to give us the money for the roads that we want to build.” He continued, “I know the importance of infrastructure but building streets and roads on the back of our students was entirely wrong to do.”

After the School Board adopts a resolution to hold an election, they forward it to the Department of Revenues for them to approve. Then they would coordinate with the Board of County Commissioners in how they bring the matter to the voters, either in a special election or with other items. Then they pass it on to the Supervisor of Elections.

It would take about 5 to 6 months for the matter to get on the ballot after a resolution is passed by the school board.

It’s interesting to note that at the January 20th workshop, a discussion arose about possible litigation if the County Commission did not work with the school board to set the election. Board member Matt Foreman cited a 1998 situation in which the Attorney General said the Board of County Commissioners has an obligation to work with the School Board to set an election within a mutually agreeable time frame. Circle B Bar Reserve where wildlife has right-of-way

There is a video of a 13 to 15 foot American alligator crossing a path at Circle B Bar Reserve.

The locals have named the large reptile ‘Mr. Humpback.’

From Brooksville, it’s just an hour and a half to Lakeland to visit the 1,267 acre preserve that provides nature enthusiasts a wonderful retreat.

Birders to nature photographers from all over the state visit Circle B Bar Reserve frequently. If you decide to go, hopefully you won’t run into Mr. Humpback.

The diversity of ecosystems showcase some of the best habitats natural Florida has to offer. The preserve hugs Banana Creek Marsh surrounded by freshwater marshlands to upland pines that host a variety of wildlife.

What you may see during your visit: Birds: Osprey, Hawks, Great Blue Herons, Eagles, Ibis, Limpkin, Anhinga and many more!

Reptiles:

Yellow Rat Snakes, Banded Water Snakes and lots of Alligators!

There are many species of butterflies and insects for you to find as you explore the trails surrounded by century old cypress and oak trees.

Visitors can also check out the Polk’s Nature Discovery Center located within the Circle B Bar Reserve. Learn about the habitats and wildlife of Circle B Bar Reserve as well as surrounding areas.

Juicy Roasted Turkey made with Mayonnaise Along the Eagles Roost trail at Circle B Bar Reserve. Look for the Eagles along the tree line.

Ingredients Whole Turkey 13-15lbs (thawed total) 2 tablespoon oregano 1 tablespoon rosemary 2 teaspoon sage 2 teaspoon rosemary Salt & Pepper as desired 1 large onion minced roughly 1 stick butter 2 cups mayonnaise Hint: adjust seasoning to size of your turkey Turkey will not taste like

mayonnaise, and this could also be done with chicken.

Directions Preheat your oven to 450 Rinse and pat dry your turkey. Put turkey in roasting pan, in large bowl mix mayonnaise with all seasonings.

Mix Well.

Rub mixture inside and outside of turkey, make sure you stick mixture in all cavities of your turkey. Place turkey into oven for about 20 minutes,

then turn down to 350.

Insert a meat thermometer, make sure it's in a thick part of your turkey. Read directions for the correct internal temp or it may pop up. Once your turkey is done completely, remove and cover and let set for about 15/20 minutes. (wait time helps with carving your turkey) Hint: Everyone has done it, but make sure you remove neck and gibbets before baking.

Christmas Collection for Guardian Ad Litem Children The Betty Lykes Stringer chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy is in the process of collecting Christmas toys for Children in the Guardian ad Litem program. These are children who have been removed from their homes for their own protection and who had to leave most of their belongings behind. The chapter is also collecting non-perishable food items to donate to local food banks. We are an organization that is concerned about preserving history and honoring our ancestors as well as all veterans. The celebration honors the memory of Mark Swiconek.

Mark was a long time Special Olympics athlete and leader whose life was devoted to serving. He was employed at Oak Hill Hospital and he was an active member of St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church and Toastmasters International.

Dec. 12th features Cameron Jaggard on “From the Coast to the Deep: Protecting Florida’s Marine Ecosystems” Join us for the Sierra Club Adventure Coast Meet Up Wednesday, December 12th with Cameron Jaggard as we discover Florida’s forage fish, ancient corals, and seagrass savannas during a talk entitled “From the Coast to the Deep: Protecting Florida’s Marine Ecosystems.”

Cameron Jaggard is a principal Associate for U.S. Oceans, Southeast for The Pew Charitable Trusts. He will provide an overview of Pew, the importance of healthy marine and coastal ecosystems to Florida, and highlight two recent initiatives to protect ancient, deep-sea corals in the Gulf of Mexico and support new research on small, but important and mysterious forage fish and their relationship to predators, habitat, and environmental disturbances in Florida.

Cameron is outreach coordinator for Pew’s efforts to conserve Florida’s ocean resources, including forage fish, based in North Palm Beach. Before joining Pew, Cameron worked as an environmental consultant in Florida and with the Institute for Fisheries Resources in San Francisco, supporting protection and restoration efforts for salmon and their river habitat along the U.S. West Coast from California to Alaska.

Pasco County Parks brings extended hours and improvements to waterfront park~~ SunWest Park is officially under new management.

Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources assumed day-to-day operations as of October 1, 2018.

The Pasco Board of County Commissioners approved an amended lease agreement with the previous operator, The Lift Adventure Park.

New operations under Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources will include expanded hours from sunrise to sunset, as well as new parking pay stations and a commitment to improved maintenance onsite at the popular, recreational waterfront facility.

The Lift Adventure Park will continue to provide a variety of amenities at SunWest, including the world-class wakeboarding cable system, paddle sports and an updated and expanded aqua park.

Two dozen beach volleyball courts, space for sand soccer, and the ability to host water ski teams and more makes SunWest a key sports tourism asset for the County.

SunWest Park is located at 17362 Old Dixie Highway in Hudson. It’s developed around a former limestone mine, known locally as “SunWest Mines.” Gracing the shores of the 70 acre spring-fed lake, visitors can enjoy nearly a mile of waterfront, white sand beach, spectacular sunsets and watersports activities for all ages.

Bucks 'n Ducks It’s been a great time to be out in the woods and on the hunt. Cooler weather has been a blessing and keeps the critters up and on their feet. I have been fortunate to put another young buck in my freezer and my inbox has become flooded with stories of success from all across our county. And it only gets better from here!

If you haven’t put any fresh meat in your freezer yet, this weekend is your best bet!

Beginning tomorrow, November 16, through Monday, November 19, it’s either sex days on private land throughout our county. I encourage you all to take advantage of the opportunity. It’s not only a great chance to put fresh, organic protein into your family’s diet, but it benefits the overall health of the herd.

How so?

Well, in various ways I’m afraid my limited space for this column won’t allow me to explain, but for anyone interested, I can share more with you via email.

Bear in mind now, that the moon is finishing up its first quarter this weekend, growing to a full moon on the 23rd of the month.

What that means to us hunters is that the best time to be in the woods will be early morning.

I recommend getting into your stands at least a half of an hour prior to daybreak and take note…. Just because the season allows for either sex harvest, please be wary. I’ve lately seen does with fawns still in tow.

Now, not only is the antlerless deer season upon us, but the regular duck season is set to open up this Saturday, Nov. 17. And as I’ve long maintained, if you can’t find a place to duck hunt in Hernando County, you’re simply not trying. Duck hunting here is legal on most bodies of water with public access. The Chassahowitzka River and our Gulf Coast provides an almost-endless opportunity to set up for a hunt. As well, there is the Withlacoochee River systems and various WMA’s throughout the county are here to be explored.

Having said that, though, Florida duck hunting is no slamdunk. It can be fairly inconsistent from year to year. For one, vagaries of the migration due mostly to weather patterns, affect the quality of hunting.

The Nature Coast Sharks entered the FHSAA Class 5A, Region II quarterfinal as the best team in their district (5A7) and the region, which enabled the squad to ensure home field advantage throughout the first three rounds of the playoffs.

Their first opponent: the Gainesville-Eastside Rams, a squad who, despite their 7-3 record and #8 seed, was a very formidable foe.

And, despite some early self-inflicted errors which put the Sharks behind the 8-ball early, they were able to rebound and then some, scoring a season-high 57 points in a 57-26 victory over the Rams to advance to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four seasons.

For total stats, the Sharks outgained the Rams (449-213), had more first downs gained (16-7), and had less penalties than the visitors (EHS:16 for 87; NCT:7 for 45). Both teams were perfect in the red area too, as every trip for both sides resulted in a touchdown (Rams 2/2, Sharks 4/4). And in the most important area for a team, the Sharks won the turnover battle 3 to 0 (two fumbles, one INT).

Nature Coast was led once again by senior tailback Michael “MikeMike” Weston (38 carries for 240 yards and four touchdowns), who impressed 3rd year Rams skipper Cedderick Daniels, even garnering a very interesting compliment: “I’ve coached against (former Alabama and current Tennessee Titans) back Derrick Henry, but he’s special.

I didn’t think he was as fast as he was. He’s definitely very strong."

The self-inflicted errors came on special teams for Nature Coast. On their first offensive possession, the punt by junior

tight end Cai Teague was shanked and only had a net of ten yards. Two plays later, junior quarterback Anthony Richardson (a UF commit), demonstrated his incredible arm talent, finding tailback Deion Jenkins on the far side of the field for a 20-yard score.

On the next possession, also ending in a punt, the snap sailed over Teague’s head, forcing him to improvise. One rush by Darnell Greenwood after, and it was 12-0 Eastside.

“This was probably the first game all season we’ve had big mistakes on special teams that cost us,” explained Sharks head coach Cory Johns afterwards. “Defensively, we only gave up two touchdowns, and I put that credit up to my defensive coaches (Charles and Chase Liggett) for coming up with schemes to counter what this group brought to the table.”

Following this situation, Weston singlehandedly decided that was enough, and personally made it his mission to bring the Sharks back, scoring two touchdowns himself to give the home team a 14-12 advantage after the first quarter.

Eastside wouldn’t give up, however, taking the lead just after the second quarter began, with Richardson finding Tim Johnson behind the Sharks secondary for a 67-yard bomb.

The theme of Eastside’s offense appeared to be attack the secondary, and most passes succeeded in that regard; they just were dropped consistently, forcing the Rams to play catch-up most of the second half.

On the Sharks’ ensuing possession following the lead change, Weston aligned with his signal caller, junior quarterback Fabian “2Fabe” Burnett to bring NCT down the field, and Burnett would finish it off by finding “Baby Moss” Teague on a diving 15-yard catch to regain the lead.

third score of the contest just before the intermission, and it was 28-18.

From there, Johnson fielded the kick for Eastside and dashed through the Sharks’ kicking unit for a 90-yard touchdown, and after a successful Richardson two-point conversion, that would make the closest the Rams had to take the lead back.

From there, Weston added his final touchdown of the game, a 43-yard scamper up the middle, and was then aided by sophomore athlete Kinyatah Morgan, who scored on a 65-yarder and a 16-yard run.

Burnett would add a beautiful arching pass over the Rams secondary to Brian Morgan, and that would prove to be the final margin.

For Nature Coast, their win means for Hernando County high school football, they’re the last team standing. They now must prepare for a home game against the Baker County Wildcats, who defeated the Hernando Leopards in the first round 28-14.

This game is a rematch of last year’s first round, in which the Wildcats defeated NCT 34-7 en route to a state runner-up finish. Despite the looming rematch, Johns isn’t

looking ahead: “Their offensive line isn’t the same because (Riley) Cooper graduated. It was him who made a real difference up in the trenches. Regardless, they’re a good team, but they’re not who they were last season.”

Knowing that, it can be of benefit to you to stay mobile, scout on the fly and take full advantage of all of the great knowledge found from other hunters.

Seek them out on social media, engage them at the boat ramps and glean as much information as you can to get an advantage on your next outing.

Personally, I’m not afraid to admit it, I’m one of the worst duck hunters out there. My problem isn’t finding the ducks, nor is it getting close enough for consistent shooting.

Nope, my problem is hitting the darn things!

I can take a limit of doves with way less than

a whole box of shells. I can clean up a trap range without too much consideration. But, when those watertight cruise missiles come winging and flaring over a decoy set, all I can manage is to make a lot of noise and never even touch a feather. Reckon I’ll try again soon, but there will definitely be a trip to the gun club in store for me to try to plumb up my aim.

When you hear the word beard you may think of Abraham Lincoln, Vikings, Lumberjacks or even ZZ Top, but the beard is becoming increasingly popular for today’s young men.

Two friends from Hernando County intend to cash in on this popularity and are jumping into the beard care marketplace.

Best friends since their school days at West Hernando Middle, Shan McQuown and Garrett Homan, now 24, have remained close since graduating from Central High School in 2013. It’s not surprising, since they realized in middle school that their mothers had been best friends in school as well and the two mothers even took photos of their baby boys together.

“His (Shan’s) aunt and my mom were best friends at Hernando High,” Garrett said. “We have baby pictures [of us].”

“Yeah, I thought it was just some baby and it ended up being Garrett,” Shan said.

Shan, a systems analyst for Pasco County School District moved to Tampa after high school while Garrett, currently in the process opening his own car lot, moved to Land O’ Lakes.

However years later things changed when Shan moved back to Spring Hill as well as Garrett, just the next street over.

One night playing video games, neither of them thought that three years later life would take a unique turn.

“I was a few months in of growing my beard and I want to see how long I could grow it, at that point Garrett started growing his.” Shan said.

Growing a beard means a demand for beard caring products, and learning about keeping a well-kept beard, not only for personal appearance but also for the workplace.

Finding that the need of specific products designed just for beards were slim pickin’s in over the counter selections as well as the products to ensure a higher quality for maintaining style, conditioning and a variety of attractive scents.

“You have to find a nice balance, because most of those products you put in your beards will be greasy, that’s not what you want,” Garrett said. “You want it to be absorbant, you want to make your beard soft and healthy.”

At first it was just a hobby and experimenting with kitchen chemistry that began the road to developing their own product line.

“We realized the ingredients in these products are very basic.”

Shan said. “There’s tons carrier oils to take advantage of that you can (use) for your beard and skin and really help make a good quality product. That’s when we started doing something on our own.”

For months Shan and Garrett would test out combinations of oils to create their own unique scents.

“For example, we have a one called Crusaders Coast, and it’s pineapple and coconut, well they don’t make a pineapple essential oil, so you have to mix the essential oils to figure out what’s going to make that scent, that’s the hard part.” Garrett said.

While creating these scents, you’ve got to have testers right, so what better way to test your products than having friends as test subjects.

“I think we hit something right, because all of them have beards now.” Shan laughed.

Creating a variety of unique scents also had one important factor... it had to pass another test... would it be “female approved”.

“We do get a lot of feedback from my girlfriend,” Shan said.

“There are some she doesn’t like but there are some she is able to give a whole new perspective on.”

According to a post-mortem research study in the PLoS ONE, a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal published by the Public Library of Science, 2014 November issue, women have almost 50% more neurons in their olfactory centers (the part dedicated to smelling and odors) than male brains.

“I enjoy the scents more than anything,” Crystal Anderson said.

“They’ll smell one certain thing about it, and when I smell it, I smell it something different and they realize that make sense.”

credible, and a great fit for any man, any style of beard and for wherever you are heading either a night on the town or rugging it out in the woods and as Garrett explained, producing high quality products is the utmost of importance.

Including in the Royal Beardsmen brotherhood is another longtime friend, Thomas Maynard, a software technician for Pasco County Schools. Maynard, 23, is acting as the brand ambassador for the company and one way to expand business in the county is to build a true relationship with local-owned barber shops.

“We don’t really have a brick and mortar establishment yet, so we thought it would be a great idea to see if we could branch into that atmosphere first.”

Maynard said. “Our main goal, is trying to get out there.”

These twenty-four year old men from Hernando County have marked their future to take bearded men out of an shaded appearance and into an accepted form of personal expression.

“This day and age where it (beards) has changed a lot and

has become more acceptable, but there is still that bad stigma where if you got a beard you look like a homeless man or you’re not well-kept, that was the overall mission to provide tools to end that stigma.” Shan said. “So with these products you have the ability to give yourself a clean appearance and keep your beard well-groomed, nice and styled.

That is what we are all about.”

With just developing their business in January of this year from an idea three years ago and launching their brand in July, everything seems to be on the right path for both of them and their future.

“It's just surreal.” Shan said. “I never thought we would be doing this together and where we are right now.”

“Definitely over the moon.”

Garrett added.

Beards: Love 'em or Hate 'em One of many studies carried out throughout the years, results concluded that 92 percent of women and 79 percent of men would rather not work with people who have facial hair. It also said that senior managers thought that men with beards looked old, unattractive and shifty.

Another study found that “bearded men were considered better-looking, not to mention more masculine, mature, dominant, self-confident, courageous, liberal, nonconforming, industrious, and older.”

And in yet another online survey, hundreds of women consistently rated bearded men as much more sexually attractive than their smooth-chinned counterparts.

Why am I not surprised?

We live in a society that’s obsessed with physical appearance — especially that of women. But, in reality, men are just as obsessed and mentally affected by their appearance.

Men don’t wear make up; …well, most men.

That means they can’t change their facial appearance like women can with the use of cosmetics.

What they can do is grow the hair on their heads, bodies and faces.

Growing a beard or a mustache certainly makes a statement and can have a dramatic effect on how the wearer is viewed by others.

Why do so many men who have gone bald wear mustaches and beards?

Do they need a certain amount of hair to make them feel manly but don’t consider it important where that hair is located? Is it a question of balance? I mean what they’re lacking on their heads is made up in their nostrils, ears, chest and back?

Does extra hair make him feel more attractive, macho? Or maybe they’re just lazy and don’t want to shave every morning.

With the amount of work there is to do in this busy world, sometimes it’s hard to justify spending two hours of the day going to see a play. The following article will assist with this conundrum, as going to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat over the weekend was more beneficial for me than completing any of the menial work related tasks that constantly loom overhead.

The effort and energy put forth by the Live Oak team was inspiring and surprisingly contagious. I walked in thinking about all those dreadful things like laundry and dishes and articles to write and emails to send. However, within moments of the first number, all of those thoughts floated away and I was transfixed by the vibrant actors and actresses singing the tale of Joseph and his dreamcoat.

Joseph, played by the very talented Kaiden Rossiter in this particular performance (Live Oak always has two casts for each play) has a tremendous presence on stage through his versatile sing-

ing and charm. We saw some of this talent in his last Live Oak performance of ReUnKnighted, but the role of Joseph allowed him to really show the audience his shockingly exceptional singing skills. The narrator Caitlyn George simply rocked every note she sung and transitioned between numbers flawlessly. It’s a fast paced show, so surely it’s not an easy feat to be on target every time.

Director Randi Olsen remarked during intermission that Ely Walters is also a superb Joseph and he brings tons of energy to the performance. She finds herself dancing to the beat when Ely is on stage.

She is really amazed with the amount of talent between the two casts.

I really enjoyed the variety of song in the production which featured a sad cowboy ballad, Elvis Rock n’ Roll jams, Jamaican steel drum calypso all weaved together with finesse.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the first production in their new location. Directors Kyle Marra and Randi Olsen write in the Theatre bill, “This theatre, the seats you’re sitting in, the show you’re about to watch are all evidence of fulfilled dreams and answered prayers. Preparation for this moment was not easy. Not only were we staging an ambitious show that is void of dialogue and driven by music and choreography, we were also reinventing ourselves as a theatre company.”

I’m glad I spent those two hours with the Live Oak family. I came away a happier person with renewed energy for the the week ahead and an

Lake Hernando Dragon Boat Festival

A recent article about the Nature Coast Dragon Boat Club of Citrus County mentioned the club competing in the 2018 Lake Hernando Dragon Boat Festival.

“The whole team performed very well, particularly the women in that final race, I think that’s the the best race they ran all year,” Andrew Davies said.

LifeSouth observes the life-saving act of cord blood donation Every day, mothers around the world make the choice to donate their umbilical cord blood to a cord blood bank after giving birth. LifeSouth Cord Blood Bank (part of LifeSouth Community Blood Centers) is working to raise awareness for this life-saving act in honor of World Cord Blood Day which was on Nov. 15.

Umbilical cord blood is a rich source of stem cells.

To date, more than 40,000 patients have received cord blood transplants since the procedure was first performed in 1988. Cord blood has surpassed bone marrow as a source for stem cells in transplants. Brooksville Beautification Board Member, Ronette Snyder, applies the last planting/ touches to complete the Wee Fairy Village which is in the May-Stringer Museum’s Memories Garden, 601 Museum St. Brooksville. All summer, during the hot afternoons, Volunteers from the Museum’s Docents, Beautification Board, Brooksville Garden Club, Retired Teachers, Library Reading Groups and Hikers would come to my home and in A/C applied natural materials to make roofing and siding for the 25+ small wooden structures.

I am in awe, states Snyder, with each volunteer’s ability to create a totally unique house or village structure. I gratefully accept and give thanks for everyone’s time, efforts and donations of backyard pine cones & needles, tiny stones, shells and money for special glues and other needed materials. Special appreciation to Mary & Wes Waller for donating 12 houses and then to attach each one securely to the lattice base. About 12 other village structures were donations from BGC Artist, Valdora Ward.

These actually started the idea to assist the Museum in their effort to create a Fairy Garden. It took many hands to create this Fairy Village, wonderful manifestation of fun energy and cooperation. FREE & Open to Public Tuesday, Nov. 13th @ 5:50 PM and every DAY after.

Fear of using punishment is weakening our children's character Our modern culture has emphasized that positive reinforcement is the solution to raising healthy children. By eliminating negative reinforcement children will develop a higher self-esteem and more appropriate behavior. There will be no self-doubt and anger that come with any form of punishment. Employing the reinforcement schedule of 8 positives to 2 negatives our children will become successful people of substance. Everyone will find these young people friendly, helpful and cooperative to others. It is the perfect profile of a person for fitting into a materialistic world. It just has not happened.

The reality of giving 8 positives to every 2 negatives is a difficult task for parents and loved ones. The parents and other adults have to be with the child intimately for many hours each day. B.F. Skinner gave a pigeon a food pellet every time it made the right action, which took diligence and continual observation. Reinforcement has to be diligent and often upgraded to remain as an effective tool for the maturing child. It is not happening.

The obvious problem to this method of shaping behavior in our modern culture is that most parents are at work and not at home. The babysitter or preschool teacher usually has more quantity time with the child than does the parent.

Modern parents often have minimal to no time to interact with their child. These parents want to appease their child to decrease their own guilt for being absentee parents.

Many children attempt to gain their parent’s attention by doing inappropriate things.

This is a significant dilemma for the parent who corrects the child’s behavior according to modern psychological tenets.

It can cause feelings of rejection and unnecessary stress for both parents and child.

The most common response of today’s parent is to ignore the child’s inappropriate actions as pleasantly as possible to avoid any unnecessary incidents. This causes frustration and aggravation for both. The parents are constantly reminded that they should spend quality time with their precious child. Quality time should be a contented period when the child and parent are supposed to bond.

The tragedy of this scenario is the child is ultimately the loser. He is never taught what is the appropriate behavior.

The child becomes more prone to do whatever comes into his mind rather than please the parent by doing the right thing. The child learns to “do his own thing” rather than the socially approved thing.

The child starts to believe he has the inherent right to do anything he feels like doing.

Since children are not being taught boundaries of right and wrong they get into the habit of doing and feeling anything they do is acceptable. These children do not develop social skills like manners, appropriate space, kindness, perseverance and conflict resolution. When many modern children enter school they are psychologically labeled for the parent’s lack of appropriately socializing them. Their child’s shortcomings are often amplified when they enter college and the workforce. Crotch on Fire Cars used to come with ashtrays. In my current car, where the tray would have been is now an open compartment for storing stuff. The socket that used to hold a push-and-pop-out lighter, which was often located inside the ashtray, is still included but is now used for charging electronic equipment. Oh, you can buy sandbag and cup holder ashtrays, but they’re not the same as the olden days. I no longer smoke in the car, so it doesn’t bother me. But back when I did, I experienced the perils of smoking while driving, and this is what I know: Besides the hazard of restricting yourself to the full use of only one hand on the steering wheel while holding a cigarette, and the occasional burning and watery hindrance to vision in one or both eyes from stray streams of smoke, and contortionist attempts at trying to retrieve a dropped lighter, the most dreaded and dangerous situation a smoker faces while driving is the emberbetween-the-legs dilemma.

The three ways in which this happens are as follows, listed according to increasing degrees of terror.

Simply dropping the cigarette due to fatigue or clumsiness is the most common method for introducing fire to private parts.

For a seasoned smoker this is little cause for panic.

There’s a fifty percent chance that the cigarette will land at your feet, in which case you just stomp it out on the mat. (This method doesn’t work well if you’re driving barefoot.) If the cigarette does drop on the seat, you need only to pluck it from between your legs, calmly if the filter is pointed toward your crotch, but with a little more panic if the lit end is about to cook your goodies.

Not as common, but able to more quickly rouse all four cranial lobes into full consciousness, is the “dry lip” development. The choreography for this is fascinating. First, a bit of drying spit cements the filter to your lip, usually the bottom one. Second, you reach up to remove the cigarette. Third, unknown to you, your fingers slide down to the lit end.

Fourth, that’s when the filter detaches from you lip. Fifth, your first clue that something is wrong is the curious sight of the cigarette protruding from the wrong side of your hand. Sixth, your second clue, instantly following the first, is pain. Seventh, after a nanosecond of indecision, your hand takes over and flaps bat-like around the cab.

The good news is that there is only a twenty-percent chance that the cigarette will land between your legs. The bad news is that there is a fifty to seventy-five percent chance that it will land between someone else’s legs.

If this happens, it’s best to pull over while attempting to explain to the individual the proper method for cigarette extraction, as described in the first scenario. (Actually, from my own experience, it’s best to pull over anyway, in case that person, after rescuing herself by whatever means, decides to hit you in the back of the head with a shoe.)

The university environment has become the natural extension of the lenient approach to immature and antisocial behavior. Cry closets, nap stations, and safe spaces have been established to protect student sensibilities and allow greater tolerance for angry outbursts against anyone who possesses different ideas and opinions. By VINCENT CARDEGIN Less common than the first scenario but more so than the second is the “lost ember” incident, in which only the ember itself drops between your legs. This happens due to either striking the cigarette against the steering wheel while reaching down to flick ash in the tray, thus knocking the ember clean off of the cigarette, or from a combination of loose packing and over-zealous flicking, which results in a sort of candle-burning-rope micro-drama, where the ember is hanging by a single strand of tobacco which invariably burns through while your hand is en route over your lap. Whichever the cause, usually you’ll catch onto your predicament immediately from feeling the collision of cigarette against wheel or from seeing sparks, smoke, and ash trailing down to where such things do not belong. But sometimes it’s a short while until your next drag, when you notice a peculiar chill in the smoke, and afterwards that there is no smoke at all. Or you may be alerted, perhaps subconsciously at first, by the discrepancy between the location of the cigarette and where the smoke is actually coming from. And if you completely miss all the visual clues, the sensation of a crotch on fire will quickly get your attention.

But the method of discovery is not what’s important, only your reaction. There are few minor catastrophes in life that can match the gut-gripping feeling that things have gone terribly wrong than the sight of an empty-ended cigarette: What had, a moment before, been tipped with hypnotic layers of white and black ash around glowing orange, there now remains only a thin, ragged rim of singe-brown paper and a hollow space.

And, too, a flaming crotch is something that can easily result in the kind of frantic panic worthy of police attention. So when reacting to

police are trained to overlook abusive and illegal behaviors. These “privileged students” have been increased to placate the parents who are paying outrageous tuition fees. This is exorbitant extortion tuition for dealing with poorly trained youngsters.

Probably the most devastating event of removing punishment for destructive behavior from the lives of our children is the weakening of their character.

this situation, there are two rules you must absolutely follow: First, do not take the time to examine the floor or ashtray. Unless your wide and darting eyes immediately locate the ember somewhere else, always assume it is between your legs.

Second, do not lift your butt. Besides risking sudden acceleration or breaking from using your feet as leverage, butt-lifting can allow the ember to roll further down the seat, providing you with the opportunity for experiencing truly inflamed hemorrhoids.

The one and only time, years ago, I lifted my butt, my wife was in the car with me, fortunately. After realizing why I had suddenly accelerated to eighty miles an hour while trying to stand up in a compact car and yelling “Fire! Fire!” she calmly poured a half can of cola between my legs.

Despite the goose-fleshing of nether-parts, this is the first and best method for quenching a crotch.

The other method of self-rescue, and the more instinctive, is to scoop out the ember with the back of your hand. But you must be willing to sacrifice a spot or two of finger skin and, if you’re like me, a generous amount of knuckle hair.

I see arms hanging out of car windows with fingers holding cigarettes all the time. Because the vehicle doesn’t have an ashtray, those smokers toss their butts out onto the road. Litterbugs! Starting in the early 1970s, a comprehensive commercial campaign began on television against people throwing their fast food debris out the window while driving, and it worked. Our roads are no longer lined with trash and garbage. But I often see countless butts on the grassy dividers when I’m at a stoplight. And not so long ago I ran across piles of ash and butts in the parking lot of Exwork, where evil customers emptied their “smokeless” cup holder ashtrays or emptied the real trays from their olden cars.

Step one to quit smoking is to stop smoking while driving. Step two is to stop smoking in the bathroom. I haven’t mastered that yet, but I’m working on it.

Though I did not serve in the military, I am very appreciative of those who have. I’m very proud of my son who is a marine that spent time in Japan and Thailand.

He has a Masters degree and served with Homeland Security is now working as a police officer at a Veterans hospital. Neither my father or his dad were soldiers but on my mother's side of the family, it is quite a different story.

My maternal grandfather fought in WWI and was in France. He was injured in the war and according to my mom, he was never the same. I can barely remember him as a child but do recall a few details like when we would visit, he would greet us at the door making meow sounds like a cat and then he would always peel and slice apples and set them on the coffee table. I ate the apples and laughed at his meows. His wife, my grandmother passed away when I was even younger.

They had 7 children, 3 boys, 4 girls, and my mother was the baby. Like many families during that time period, all three sons were eventually enlisted in the military. However, I thought it was even more unique how the father and each son was a soldier in a different war. The dad World War I, the oldest son was in Japan during WWII, the second son was killed in Korea, and the youngest son served in the Vietnam era. I vaguely remember two of these uncles and now realize they both suffered terribly from PTSD. My uncle who was killed in action died in 1950 eight years before I was born.

I wish I had been old enough to speak with these family members about their military experiences.

My mother can recall a few memories and recently I contacted the department of military affairs and requested some of their official documents. I received a few things but much of it was difficult to read and some were unfortunately destroyed in a fire at the National Personnel Records Center Archives in 1973. My mom was very close to her brother who never returned and was convinced that he was her mother's favorite child. His nickname was Kenny and he worked a little part-time job before he went to the war and she remembers he would give her ten cents every Saturday to buy some candy which she really looked forward to. He would also buy his mother flowers every week and she would sit them on the kitchen table. She also remembers the day when military representatives knocked on their door and told her mother that they were sorry to inform that her son had been killed. She ran through the house wailing and screaming no please no, over and over. My mother said it was a terrible time and she can recall her mother going to bed and staying there for weeks.

I currently have the privilege to volunteer as a chaplain at a veterans health care facility and its truly an honor to spend quality time with the many fine men and women who have served our nations armed forces. I teach Bible studies and lead worship services with the old hymns which they really enjoy. I’m on call whenever a resident becomes seriously ill and present with the family whenever someone passes away.

I’ve come to accept that many veterans who need constant medical care do not have family or friends to visit them. Many of the older ones have outlived everyone but its still sad to walk into a room and not see any pictures or greeting cards. I’ve asked the staff on numerous occasions if a certain resident has had any visitors and they cannot remember the last time someone was there. I’m also a chaplain for a small honor guard team which presents memorial services for military veterans. I open and close in prayer and have been known to sing the national anthem on occasions. I encourage you to set aside some time and visit a veteran. They would appreciate it very much and I promise you will also be blessed beyond words.

Veterans day not only remembers those who served our country in the past but also recognizes those who continue to serve today. We share a sincere gratitude to all who gave some and to some who gave all to preserve our freedom.
