“I guess it was a pair of expensive designer shoes that helped forge my career in wine,” said Joseph Sparacia of the Sparacia Witherell Family Winery & Vineyards just north of Chinsegut Hill.

Joseph had just graduated in architecture and went to interview with a prestigious New York firm.

“I presented my portfolio which they liked and offered me a position at $150 a week,” he said. “But, in that moment, I looked down at my beautiful shoes and thought I’d have to work weeks to be able to buy another pair of these and so I politely declined.”

Centuries-old boat racing tradition, popular sport for all ages ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

An old Chinese tradition is becoming a prominent activity on the waters of the Nature Coast and is drawing participants of all ages. It is called dragon boat racing and combines the physical and rhythmic demands of synchronized rowing in a long canoe type boat.

The sport has come a long way since 550 AD, when there is evidence of boat racing being used as an exhibition sport in the form of a staged mock battle called Jingdu (jeeng-DOO), which means “competitive crossing.” An event that was part race Members of the Nature Coast Dragon Boat Racing Club.

Most people found the results of the election mixed. People on both ends of the political spectrum have wins and losses in this election.

The Hernando County area and the state of Florida trended to the Republican side of the aisle for the 2018 general election. Voters approved 11 out of the 12 constitutional amendments on the ballot. The approval of Amendment 4, restoring felons voting rights, could possibly sway future elections in favor of Democrats. It also makes the process for restoring rights to felons who have served their time less opaque.

Very tight governor and US senate races in Florida kept voters on the edge of their seats Tuesday night. As of 7AM Wednesday morning, the US Senate race between Rick Scott and Bill Nelson had not been declared. With 100% of precincts reporting, Scott led Nelson by 34,537 votes with over 8 million ballots cast. Desantis narrowly defeated Gillum to take the role of Florida Governor. He received roughly 55,000 votes over his democratic opponent Andrew Gillum as of 7 AM Wednesday morning with 99% of precincts reporting. Republicans are no doubt relieved as 4 Florida Supreme Court Justice picks will go to DeSantis after he is sworn in.

Locally, Hernando County had a considerable voter turnout for a midterm general election at 60.78%. For the previous midterm general in 2014, there was only a 52% voter turnout in Hernando County. The Orlando Sentinel reported that in every Central Florida county, voter turnout exceeded the 2014 midterms.

Local incumbent candidates kept their jobs. Re-elected local officials include Hernando County Commissioners Wayne Dukes (REP) and Jeff Holcomb (REP). Deborah Salvesen (DEM) fell to Dukes by 13,988 votes, while Nancy Makar (DEM) lost to Holcomb by 18,780 votes.

Incumbent Daniel Webster defeated Spring Hill local Dana Cottrell to keep his job as US Representative in Congress for District 11. State Rep Blaise Ingoglia (District 35), State Rep Ralph Massullo (District 34), State Senator Wilton Simpson (District 10) will remain in office for another term.

In the City of Brooksville, two former council members sparred for seat 5. Pat Brayton was elected with 215 votes over his opponent Frankie Burnett.

a blue 2016 Chevrolet in the 7/ Eleven parking lot due to the vehicle being reported as stolen.

Contact was then made with the driver, Carrie Kearns, who was later arrested for being in possession of the stolen vehicle.

Search incident to arrest the following items were discovered in the defendant's purse; a vile containing white powder like substance, a clear baggie containing a brown rock like substance, a clear baggie containing five round yellow pills, a clear baggie containing a green leafy like substance, and a clear mason jar. Within the Mason jar was two larger baggies which also contained a green leafy like substance and several other smaller empty unused baggies.

The white powder like substance later field tested positive for methamphetamine using Narco test kit 7623. The rock like substance field tested positive for heroin using Narco test kit 7624.

The round pills were later discovered to be MDMA 22.6 mg each.

The green leafy like substances tested positive for marijuana using Narco test kit 7608.

The Mason jar which contained the green leafy like substances also contained 25 unused smaller baggies. Also located in the defendant's purse was a small digital scale.

The defendant was then transported to the Hernando County Jail. Once at the jail all narcotics were weighed on a certified scale. The white powder like substance weighed 1.2 grams without packaging. The brown rock like substance weighed 0.9 grams with packing. The five round pills weighed 1.0 grams without packaging. The green leafy like substance total weight was 6.5 grams without packaging.

Upon being booked the defendant was found to be in possession of a cut straw which was in her bra. Said straw had a white powder like substance which also tested positive for methamphetamine.

The defendant was then issued a bond of $13,000 and given a court date of 11/27/2018.

"No I will fail. Can't you just let me park my car?"

by Hernando County Fire Rescue Engine 8 slumped over in his vehicle while behind the steering approximately fifty feet before the traffic light missing numerous light cycles.

Upon arrival, I observed a 2018 black Ford F-150, bearing Georgia tag CIM4788, and the defendant outside of his vehicle occupied by three fire rescue personnel. The three fire rescue personnel were driving eastbound on Cortez Boulevard, when they observed said vehicle to be parked in the turning lane approximately fifty feet before the traffic signal. They stated they walked up to the vehicle and the defendant was sleeping in the driver's seat with the keys in the ignition with the vehicle turned on. They had the defendant exit the vehicle, due to the possibility of any medical episode that may have occurred.

Contact was made with the driver (defendant), John Herring.

The defendant was observed to have bloodshot watery eyes, the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting his breath, and unsteady on his feet, causing him to sway from side to side when speaking to affiant. I further observed him to continuously use the vehicle in attempt to help with his balance. The defendant turned towards the affiant to which I observed a large moist mark running down the right side of the defendant's leg. He then stated to speak to affiant saying, "I am under the" and attempted the word influence numerous times; however, he was unable to say it properly.

Affiant asked the defendant if he would participle in field sobriety exercise, which he refused.

It should be noted that affiant asked the defendant numerous times, if he would perform a series of field sobriety exercises, in order to dispel suspicion of his impairment, in which he still refused, and stated, "No I will fail. Can't you just let me park my car?"

The defendant continued to refuse to perform all standardized field sobriety exercises and was then taken into custody, due to my observations of him being impaired. I then transported him to the Hernando County Detention Center. Let it be known during the booking process, the defendant was unable to remove a necklace that was around his neck, the defendant needed assistance from a detention deputy after approximately three minutes.

Upon entering the Breath test room, detention deputies requested the defendant to have a seat in the chair by the desk.

However, he walked to the red biohazard bin and sat down, and was requested again to sit in the seat located by the desk.

During the twenty-minute observational period, deputies had to continuously ask the defendant to wake up due to him falling asleep. After the twenty-minute observational period, the defendant refused to provide a sample of breath, and was given multiple opportunities to do so.

The defendant acknowledged implied consent; however, refused to sign.

The defendant was given a bond of $1,000.00 and a court date of 12/05/2018 in Courtroom B at 0900AM.

CHARGES: POSS OF MARIJUANA, DRIVERS LICENSE Arrested at: 11/01/2018 18:11 W JEFFERSON ST & VETERANS AVE, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34601 Arrest Summary: On 11/01/2018 I responded to an accident at W. Jefferson and Veterans Avenue.

Contact was made with the at fault driver, and defendant Antonio Pasqualetti whose identity was verified by his Florida Identification card.

Prior to any questioning, Antonio advised he just left his residence after smoking some weed, and has knowledge that his license was suspended. Antonio had a dark colored backpack with him at the time. A strong odor of marijuana was observed emitting from Antonio and his property.

The traffic crash was completed at which time Antonio was advised that I was now working a criminal investigation. A records check of DAVID revealed Antonio's license to be suspended as of 10/23/2017.

Antonio did make mention "All the weed is mine, both bags".

Antonio further stated the weed was in the second compartment of his backpack. I did ask Antonio, if he minded that I open the bag, to which he stated "No, go ahead, its in there". Antonio stated, "I use it for my medical condition since I cant afford the monthly payment for the prescription medicine."

A total of two clear plastic bags containing a green leafy substance were collected which Antonio advised were his. Antonio stated " I think both together is going to be a felony amount".

A field test utilizing NARCO Test kit 7608 revealed the green leafy substance to display a positive result for THC. Antonio was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail where he and his property were turned over to jail staff. Antonio is being held on a bond totaling $3,000.00.

OHAUS scale Model # C305-S Serial # 47871 revealed the green leafy substance which tested positive for THC to weigh 21.9 grams.

Antonio was issued a criminal traffic citation (AAOE1ZE) for driving without a license. Antonio was issued a uniform traffic citation (AAOE1YE) for not stopping at stop sign. A traffic transmittal form was completed and turned over to jail staff along with these citations.

A court date of 11/27/2018 was issued in court room "D".

It should be noted that a records check revealed Antonio to have an active warrant out of Citrus County. A hold will be placed on Antonio.

Upon arrival I made contact with the victim, who was standing outside in her socks at the end of her driveway. The victim appeared visually scared and upset. Victim kept saying, "I can't believe he hit me. I can't believe he hit me with his fist."

Victim advised that she and her husband, the defendant, had several friends over for drinks. Victim advised that after several of their friends left she allowed one of the defendant's friend and his girlfriend sleep in their bed while they slept in a guest bedroom.

The victim advised that the defendant then got mad, called her a w**** and punched her on the right side of her face with a closed fist against her will. The Victim advised that the defendant then kept calling her a "w****" and a "piece of s***".

While speaking with the victim I observed her right ear to be a reddish color and the side of face to have a reddish tint. The victim advised that she and the defendant have been married since February and he has never struck her before.

While speaking with the victim, I could detect a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her person. The victim admitted that they have been drinking; however, when the defendant drinks he get aggressive.

While speaking with the victim, the defendant exited the residence and began yelling in a slurred manner, "I'm right here officer!" then stumbled to the front of truck parked in the yard.

It should be noted that though I could detect the smell of alcohol from the victim, her speech was clear and she could walk and stand steady.

I then made contact with the defendant who was leaned up against the front of the truck.

I then asked the defendant what was happening tonight at which time he responded, "I don't know." I then asked the defendant how the side of Faith's face got red at which time the defendant then became more aggressive with his speech and yelling.

The defendant answered my question with, "Sangrias". I then asked what he meant at which time the defendant kept stating, "She f****** up on Sangrias that's what's happening". I then asked the defendant if had struck the victim, at which time he became angry and kept yelling, "I never touched her".

I then asked the defendant again how her face got red at which time he then began to say, "Your just going to take me to jail aren't you, just go ahead and take me to jail. I'm not answering any questions, go ahead and take me to jail".

I then took the defendant into custody and transported him to the Hernando County Detention Center. While at the jail an inquiry of the defendant's criminal history revealed a prior battery conviction on 09/02/2009. The defendant is currently being held on a no bond status and was given a felony arraignment date of 11/27/2018.

Actions to be taken on school district’s weapons policy

On October 4, 2018, Ronald Ralph, a Central High School paraprofessional was arrested for possessing a firearm on school property. Ralph’s arrest record cites a violation of Florida Statute 790.115, which states in part that one exception is “In a vehicle pursuant to s. 790.25(5); except that school districts may adopt written and published policies that waive the exception in this subparagraph for purposes of student and campus parking privileges.”

The Hernando County School Board discussed the matter at an Informal Meeting held on October 9, 2018. Chairman Mark Johnson brought the matter to the board, stating that after a conversation with the School Board’s attorney Dennis Alfonso, the board’s current policies are found to be “at odds with each other,” and the board agreed that the matter should be brought to a Workshop so that the policies can be revised to eliminate confusing language. A county record search listed Ralph’s case as “Prosecutor: Dropped / Abandoned” on October

Alfonso described the inconsistencies in the school board policies as “complicated and subtle.”

Current statutes evolved over several years from a Federal statute that required school properties to be gun-free zones, which proved to be difficult to maintain, and ultimately left the policy-making up to the school boards.

“We have a policy for students with guns… in parking lots, and we have a different policy for employees. Then we have a third concept of policies … that deal with general members of the

public.” Alfonso also said the board has limited authority with regard to policies that can apply to students and school faculty and employees, but they cannot set policies for the public. The board will investigate appropriate signage to alert parents and campus visitors to policies.

According to the minutes of the meeting, the district will also reach out to the Florida School Board Association and NEOLA, an advisory organization to the district. The board gave consensus to workshop the item as well.

The board deliberated on the administrative process that should follow, during which Gus Guadagnino said, “Let’s forget about the process … let’s talk about the human aspect of all this. … We’ve got someone to step up into leadership, and we’re not giving him the proper amount of time to justify whether he is a good leader or not. It’s not that everything is crumbling and we need to act fast.

This is almost bizarre.”

Guadagnino expressed his concern about the optics from the perspective of a new applicant.

“How can anyone apply for this job knowing that we had someone in the

position who hit all the deliverables, but we got rid them, then we got someone to step in … and now we’re thinking of getting rid of them? How crazy are we going to look?”

Recognizing and appreciating someone’s efforts, whether in a paid or volunteer position, is important. Kemmerer acknowledged that internal issues (replacing the City Manager, Attorney and the Fire Chief) have been the council’s concern for the last 12-18 months, but city development needs to become a priority again.

“The man has proven his worth to us a number of times. I don’t think the title hurts us in any way or dissuades anyone else from trying to bring business into town,” Kemmerer said.

Erhard responded,

“How many volunteers do you give titles to?”

There are many individuals who volunteer their time and efforts for the city, and they go unnoticed, receiving no (or not enough) accolades for the work they do, Erhard said. She voiced the opinion that having a designated person with the title of Ambassador of Commerce and Employment dissuades others from promoting the city.

Kemmerer and Erhard agreed that it appears that no one has reached out to Dr. Wilfong recently. Kemmerer suggested a meeting with him to discuss plans to make his activities more visible. “There could be things he’s doing that we don’t know about.”

Reinstating music programs discussed during informal meeting

At the Oct. 9, 2018 informal Hernando County school board meeting, Linda Prescott reported that six elementary schools do not have music programs.

She also cited recent research into the benefits of music education for young students. Mentioning also that there is still a noticeable skills gap in Hernando County students, Prescott asked about the possibility of reinstating music education in schools without it.

Over the years, music programs have been eliminated due to budget cuts.

Board Member Beth Narverud mentioned the possibility of cutting elsewhere to bring the music programs back.

Interim Superintendent John Stratton cautioned the board about cutting services, “That becomes the difficult part…

We’re pretty lean. The last few years have been better, we’ve been able to do things… it’s been a few years since we’ve had to make (budget) cuts. I don’t know if the public knows how far we’ve had to cut over those lean years.”

Another funding opportunity exists in possible grants. Though not a full time grant-writer, Tresa Watson, the executive director of the Hernando Community Coalition, has written grants for the school board and is currently working on a $400,000 grant to improve mental health services, according to board member Mark Johnson.

Adding 'actual cost' information to the budget sheet

Another item addressed during the Oct. 9 informal Hernando County school board meeting was placing actual cost information on the school district’s budget sheet.

Specifically, Susan Duval raised the discussion of including the amount of money that was budgeted for an item in previous years and what the item actually cost. Duval said the information can currently be looked up, but

is time-consuming. She also noted that for anyone tracking expenses, having the additional information available will make that job easier.

“Sometimes we budget $500,000 for something ... maybe its (actual cost) is $350,000. I think it would help the board members put things in perspective.” Duval stressed that the request isn’t due to a problem, but to have information more readily available.

Mark Johnson said that adding information to the

Executive Summary as to why a bid vendor was chosen would also add to the quality of information.

Presently, this information may or may not be included in attachments. Beth Narverud added that also including reasons why a vendor was not chosen would be valuable as well.

The board discussed a using a bid document check off list, which will offer another facet of transparency for the school board budget.

Adoption2Action — Keeping families together

Adoption is a life-changing decision, not just for the child who is adopted but also for the parents and other siblings, if there are any.

Unfortunately, not all adoptions have a ‘happily-ever-after’ ending.

In the fiscal year 2015/2016 there were seventy-one dissolved or “abandoned” adoptions.

What this means is that seventy-one children were returned to the foster care system by adoptive parents who could not handle their adopted children. This could be due to severe psychological problems, drug abuse or violence on the part of the child or even just normal teenage rebellion. In any case, the parents decided that they can no longer handle the child.

Melissa Merritt founded Adoption2Action (A2A) in 2015 because she and her husband, Brandon, were facing a crisis with their adopted son, Camron. He was five years old when they adopted him and had already been in twenty-three foster homes since the age of two. The Merritts knew they were adopting a troubled child, but they wanted to give him a stable home.

When Melissa started getting calls from his teachers about his behavior, she looked for help.

It was challenging to find the help she needed and she was not aware of the resources available to her. This was why she founded the 501c3 notfor-profit corporation.

have access to quality post-adoptive services, such as Case Management and Mental Health Services.”

They help the adoptive parents navigate the social services system and provide them with the support they need to help ensure that their adoption remains a success.

The organization receives some of its funds from state legislature appropriations and grants. They are also able to bill Medicaid for some of the services that they provide to their clients.

Many of their members are volunteers and they also do fundraising. For example, currently they are holding a raffle with such prizes as a cruise, a trip to Las Vegas and a trip to New York City and a Broadway show.

Adoption2Action serves families in Florida's Fifth Judicial Circuit which includes Lake, Sumter, Citrus, Marion, and Hernando Counties.

In the past year, the organization has served 118 adults and 145 children.

These services include a 24-hour support phone line, a follow-up phone call to families within twenty-four hours and a face- to-face visit within seventy-two hours of the time initial contact is made. Among the specific services A2A offers are an Adoptive Parent Advocacy Network; family meeting facilitation; short-term and long-term needs evaluation; and an online database of agencies, physicians, psychologists and social workers.

There is even a list of books about adoption.

Adoptive parents, like any parents, will have challenges when raising their children, but agencies such as A2A make the job a little easier.

Adoption2Action also helps prevent children from going back into an already overburdened foster care system.

Council member Brent Young, who admitted he did not know Dr. Wilfong’s position or his accomplishments, expected him to at least write a response to the council about the change.

Battista stated that as a giving person, Dr. Wilfong did not need the title. He would have promoted the city without all of that. Several years ago, an economic development program was started, including the Main Street project, and Duane Chichester was hired. It couldn’t be maintained financially. Chichester was let go, and the City Manager’s contract was not renewed. Dr. Wilfong continued to quietly work on the

The motion passed with a vote of 3-2. It is possible that this will be revisited in an upcoming council meeting.

Watson described elements to be built into the proposed program that will allow students exploratory time without committing to a particular subject. Since the program development is still in it’s very early planning stages, changes in approach along the way are expected.

Funding remains a concern. Beth Narverud proposed that if the program becomes popular in the community, perhaps funding will be easier to obtain.

Calling it an “out of the box” idea in education, Narverud speculated that the plan could actually “excite the community.”

Like Duval, Gus Guadagnino also expressed his concerns about the program fostering a lack of free-form exploration for students.

More planning and development is expected for future meetings.

Explore the Great Florida Birding Trail ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALICE MARY HERDEN

The cool Florida weather is upon us… it’s the perfect time to get outdoors and discover nature.

The Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, established in 1997, is a program created by FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) and supported in part by the Florida Department of Transportation and the Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida in hopes to encourage conservation of Florida’s native habitats and species.

There are over 500 viewing and trail sites listed for the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail (GFBWT) within state of Florida and in Hernando County there are eight premiere locations to view a variety of birds as well as wildlife.

“The whole concept behind the trail was to try to accomplish a couple of different things. One: share with the public, places that they could go to have great wildlife viewing experiences and secondly to communicate with local communities that they have an economic value, that the tourism associated with that is an important asset in their community and hopefully people… take conservation action on the behalf of wildlife,” said Jerrie Lindsey, Director of Public Access and Wildlife Viewing Services with FWC. Not only does the Great Florida Birding trail focus on providing the public with great viewing locations for those birding enthusiasts, it also has created opportunity to visit areas to view an extensive variety of wildlife species within their own natural

habitats.

“The original trail really focused on birds, birding. We expanded it be a birding and wildlife trail a number of years ago, because we wanted to acknowledge and have people come out and experience other wildlife that they might see, like butterflies,” Lindsey said. “Generally if the sites are good for birding they are oftentimes good for other species as well.”

The Wings over Florida program is open for all those interested in learning more about what species of birds are year long residents and those that may migrate to Florida and of course, those that visit your own backyard.

“We have such wide variety of habitat and ecosystems and a huge diversity of species,” said Savanna Christy, Wildlife Viewing Program Specialist and coordinator for the Wings over Florida.

“The Wings over Florida program is an incentive to encourage people to participate and hopefully have them become stewards of wildlife and conservation and to really push that message forward,” Savanna said.

The incentive is not just the getting a certification from the Wings over Florida program but becoming educated on the importance of birds as well as wildlife and their habitats. It's also a great way to visit these areas around Hernando County by viewing these places differently and having a fun goal-oriented purpose to do so.

“We would like everyone to come away going.. ‘That as amazing!’ and wanting to know more and learn more,” Jerrie added.

This is great project and experience for all ages and maybe an inspiration for the younger generation to become more conscience about the importance of conservation.

•••• Listed below are the Hernando County locations within the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail: Alfred A. McKethan/Pine Island Park (Hernando County Parks and Recreation) Pine Island is loaded with a variety of common coastal birds like and a variety of gulls species to pelicans.

Bayport Park (Hernando County Parks and Recreation) At Bayport more gulls perched on the pier and markers as well as a common place for Ospreys, Little Blue Herons. Bald Eagles are common in the marsh areas and of course otters, manatees and dolphins!

A Road Between Bayou Drive is between Pine Island Park and Bayport Park and it’s a great spot to add to your list of bird sighting areas.

Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Tricolored Herons, Anhingas, Double Crested Cormorants, Eagles, Little Blue Herons, Hawks and the Belted Kingfishers have been seen at this location.

Linda Pedersen Park (Hernando County Parks and Recreation) Inlets provides White Egrets, Wood Storks, Belted Kingfishers and more wading birds as well as owls, woodpeckers towards the back part of the park. Across the street keep a look out for Ospreys and Eagles.

Barred Owls are common at Chassahowitzka WMA

Weekiwachee Preserve (SouthWest Florida Water Management District) This preserve is a place where the winter migrating sparrows can be found. Cardinals and warblers are plenty in this area.

Chassahowitzka WMA (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) With over 20,000 acres of nature, this is a great area to see a variety of birds and birds of prey live in their natural habitats.

Barred Owls, Eagles, Swallow-tailed Kites, Kestrels, Red-shouldered Hawks are common as well as Red-bellied and Pileated Woodpeckers.

Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Areas (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) Chinsegut Conservation Center is the place to relax and just enjoy the outdoor scenery from the back patio of the center.

Bird feeders are filled for Chickadees, Woodpeckers, Warblers and other small birds.

Take a hike around on the Nature trail to get glimpse of the Pileated Woodpeckers, Red-shouldered Hawks and Sandhill Cranes.

Road on the left heading north from Brooksville, Snow Memorial Hwy turns into South Pleasant Grove Road just past the Hernando | Citrus county line. Follow the paved/ limestone road till you reach the Holder Mine Camp Site.

The trail begins just past the trail 9 access road on the left. It’s a beautiful hike in the depths of the Withlacoochee Forest and lots of areas to seek out new adventures. The endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker is the main focus and a healthy force of longleaf pines within the Withlacoochee State Forest creates an opportunity for this woodpecker of making an incredible comeback.

You will notice a white band painted around selected longleaf pines, these pines have an artificial cavity insert embedded within the truck about 20 to 30 feet up, these are designed to overall help this particu-

lar species of woodpecker.

Be on the lookout for the those endangered woodpeckers as well as Downy Woodpeckers, Pine Warblers and Hawks can be seen and heard throughout the trail.

Please be aware of daily fees that may apply at some these locations as well as seasonal hunting dates within wildlife management areas.

McKethan Lake Park (Florida Forest Service) This peaceful park is centered around a beautiful lake, with Yellow-throated Warblers, Blue Jays, Eastern Phoebes, Red-bellied and Pileated woodpeckers, White Ibis and Anhingas.

Withlacoochee State Forest: Citrus Tract (Florida Forest Service) The Citrus Tract is just over the Hernando | Citrus county line, and worth the 7 miles to its location.

Cranberry Granola Cookies (No Bake) Ingredients 1 cup pistachio nuts (semicrushed) ¾ cup packed brown sugar ½ cup corn syrup 1 tablespoon vanilla 1 bag oats and dark chocolate granola 11oz 1 cup sweet dried cranberries (chopped) ¼ cup creamy peanut butter Directions

Use a large bowl to mix granola, chopped cranberries, semi-crushed pistachio nuts.

In a saucepan mix your brown sugar, creamy peanut butter and corn syrup, heat over medium high, stir constantly. Bring to boil for 1 minute, keep stirring constantly. (be safe).

Remove from heat and add your vanilla.

Now you are going to pour your mixture over mixture, stir until evenly coated.

Use a cookie sheet layered with waxed paper. With spoon drop the size of cookies desired onto paper and let cool for about 45 minutes.

Be careful if you taste when still warm.

Hernando Prep Football Playoff Capsules

by ANDY VILLAMARZO HERNANDO SUN SPORTS WRITER PHOTOGRAPHY CHERYL CLANTON The regular season for prep football in Hernando County came to a close last week and two teams were able to come away qualifying for spots in the postseason, as Hernando and Nature Coast are back in the Class 5A playoffs. Both clubs will be looking to advance against out of area opponents, with Hernando going on the road and Nature Coast hosting. We take a closer look at both of the matchups on tap for Friday night.

Hernando (7-3) at Baker County (6-4): It’s not quite the scenario that played out last season for Hernando, as they were able to host a playoff game at Tom Fisher Stadium. This time around, however, the Leopards will take their act on the road and head north to take on the Baker County Wildcats.

The Wildcats fell to Dunnellon 15-14 in the regular season finale, but they did knock off Hernando’s postseason opponent from last year, Clay, 27-24 during the season. The Leopards must lean on their defense and controlling the clock with their run game. Firstyear coach Rob Kazmier will need running backs Isreal Fields and David Hale Bronson to come up huge if Hernando has any chance of picking up the road victory.

Gainesville Eastside (7-3) at Nature Coast (9-1): The only common opponent for Gainesville Eastside and Nature Coast on both schedules is Central, whom the Rams traveled down to Brooksville and defeated 64-0. The Sharks also had their way with the Bears, defeating the winless Central club 55-0. The Rams are led by quarterback Anthony Richardson, who has thrown for over 1,400 yards and 15 touchdowns through the air through 10 games.

No. 4 Weeki Wachee (4-6, 2-4): Four wins is the most by Jacob Gray in his brief tenure so far at Weeki Wachee. Though the Hornets missed out on the playoffs, the building blocks are there for a successful 2019 season. Quarterback Vaughn Sykora threw for over 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns, setting a Hernando County record.

A 50-14 win over New Port Richey Gulf helped cap the 2018 season.

No. 5 Central (0-10, 0-6): The Bears’ season ended a couple of weeks ago, as they did not have a game this past Friday night. Central went winless during the 2018 campaign and now shift their focus towards the off-season and how to turn things around under John Warren.

Public Land Strategies I know that there are a lot of you, who like myself don’t have the deep pockets for private lease fees or to travel to hunt. Instead, we're left to hunt the public Wildlife Management Areas, which while offering some great opportunities, they do see a lot of pressure and offer unique challenges.

So, I decided to share here some pointers that can help you battle the crowds and skittish deer, and set you on the path to success.

Go in Deep The number one most important factor in finding success on our WMA’s is to get away from the crowd. Public land hunters have a tendency to hunt within a few hundred yards of the roads or trails. Putting in a little legwork can bring you into areas with a more relaxed population of deer.

And consider crossing the obstacles that will stop others, such as creeks, ponds, or swamps; over the years, the older deer have come to expect hunters won’t be back there. Utilize waders, canoes, or kayaks if you have to; they can get you in to spots that are often as good as some private lands. It’s all about going the extra mile and using their own expectations of safety to catch them unaware.

Scout early and often After you have worked hard to get to spots on public land, you should continue to do your scouting.

Pay attention to the sign as you come and go from your stand and if you sit day in and day out watching deer travelling out of range.

Don’t keep coming back, hoping that they will alter their patterns, move your stand. It’s much easier to kill a deer where they are, not where you want them to be.

Choose Your Days Public land is often best during the week as most hunters typically, for one reason or another, are restricted to hunting the weekends.

If you can manage to hunt during the week you stand a much better chance of walking in on another hunter trying to hunt, or having them inadvertently do the same to you.

Poor weather days are often a great time to hunt public land as well, not many of us are fond of hunting

Coming into the regular season finale against the IMG Academy White Ascenders, the Nature Coast Sharks had a chance at clinching the #1 seed in the FHSAA Class 5A, Region II playoffs. To obtain this privilege, they would need two things to transpire: a win over IMG and for the Weeki Wachee Hornets to defeat the Gulf Buccaneers.

By the time the game concluded, both outcomes went in favor of the Sharks.

Riding behind their tandem running game of senior back Michael Weston and junior quarterback Fabian “2Fabe” Burnett, the Sharks (9-1, 6-0) overcame a plethora of penalty yards attained to defeat the Ascenders, 34-10, and by the Hornets beating the Buccaneers, Nature Coast would earn just enough points to edge Zephyrhills for the #1 seed.

“I guess it feels good, earning the #1 seed,” explained Sharks head coach Cory Johns following the contest. “We just have a lot of work to do, and I know what’s in front of us. We’re going to get back to work shortly in preparation for a good Eastside squad.”

In terms of team stats, the Sharks outgained the Ascenders in yards (443128), first downs (19-6), and were a perfect 3-3 from the RedZone (IMG never made it inside the Sharks 20). Penalties did mar a bunch of possessions for both sides, as NCT was flagged 12 times for 95 yards, while IMG had 6 for 35 yards.

PHSC won against South Florida to advance to the District Championship with set scores of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-20.

On Sunday, Nov. 4, the ladies matched up with Lake Sumter and it was an intense 5 match fight for the district championship.

There were moments of long vollies, killer spikes and incredible saves, the stadium was filled with cheers of encouragement and inspired reactions, however Lake Sumter took the Championship title.

The contest began with Burnett taking the first play of the game to the IMG 15-yard line for a 34-yard gain. However, one false start penalty and two bobbled handoffs later, and the Sharks turned the ball over on downs. IMG attempted to test the Sharks passing defense, but quarterback Jackson Zager couldn’t complete a pass until late in the second quarter.

The first score came with 1:56 left in the first quarter, when Weston took a handoff up the left side for an 8-yard touchdown.

Not long after, Weston would score again, this time from 13 yards out with just under 11 minutes

in the second quarter.

IMG would attempt to match the Sharks’ dynamic ground game, but couldn’t get anything going offensively, and had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Cameron Gillis that could have been good from 45 yards out.

The second half would start out quietly, with both teams being forced to punt their first possessions away. However, Weston would add his third score of the contest on a fourth down conversion from the Ascenders’ 1. The extra point was missed, giving the Ascenders a little hope. And they responded in turn, taking the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Nature Coast 32. One play later, IMG would finally hit paydirt, with Jack Codwell capitalizing on a Sharks blitz which was successfully picked up on.

At this point, Burnett decided he wanted to get in on the scoring, and he did so in a big way to essentially put the game out of reach. With just

As hunters filter in to get themselves situated, they can push deer your way. And late morning and early afternoon, as the other guys head back and forth at lunchtime, again, they can bump deer your direction.

And pay close attention to the forecasted feeding times while you’re out there. I

know it’s not easy sitting on stand all day long, so during the lulls between the feeding periods, climb down, stretch your legs, enjoy your lunch and generally take a break. Above all, be diligent and smart, and you'll be able to use public land to your advantage.

Jingdu was a military recruitment training exercise for naval forces in the 800s after the imperial Tang dynasty collapsed. This practice was adopted by the new northern-based Song empire.

Throughout several centuries, this particular style of boat racing became a competitive sport in which the winners were promoted into the imperial navy. The boats were decorated like dragons, which symbolized imperial authority; as a result, other decorations such as birds, tigers, and other animals and designs were no longer being used and the competition took on the title of "dragon boat jingdu" or just "dragon boat competitions."

To encourage tourism, the British-controlled government of Hong Kong began to develop dragon boat racing as a sport in the late 1970’s and over the next several years, other locations around the world began holding festival races.

According to dragonboathistory.com, there are a few legends about Dragon Boat Racing, but the most influential legend is the story of Qu Yuan, a beloved poet and advisor to the Chu Emperor. Qu Yuan was exiled by the Emperor after advising against an alliance with the tyrannical power, Qin. The Chu Court was ultimately destroyed by the Qin. The distraught Qu Yuan took his own life by carrying a large rock into Miluo Lake. As the local boatmen saw this, they took to their boats and set out to find Qu Yuan. They beat drums while they were rowing to scare off any fish, however his body was never found. This is said to have happened in 278 B.C. The practice of racing to cross the river to find Qu Yuan became a tradition, for many, representing uncompromising principles, love of country.

The Nature Coast Dragon Boat Racing of Citrus County club currently has over twenty members, ranging in age from the mid twenties to late seventies, and has been actively participating in races since 2010.

On October 31, 2018 13 members of the Nature Coast Dragon Boat Racing club, met up at the Homosassa Riverside Resort in ‘Old Homosassa’ for a two hour practice. The club has been going strong for ten years and for the current president and coach of the club, Andrew Davies, new members become inspired by many aspects of this sport.

“I live on the water here, and I was in the backyard one day and I hear this boom, boom, boom sound. I see this boat going fast and paddling to the beats of the drum, and I said, I have got to do that, so I joined the team,” said Andrew Davies, currently the organizer, president and coach for the club.

That’s the day that began it all for Davies. For many other members, it’s not only finding inspiration but balance, strength and friendship.

“I think dragon boat racing is somewhat unique. When you’re out there you’re racing

that’s the competition, when your off the boat it is really very collegial, everyone helps each other out,” said Davies.

“There are people in their twenties, seventies, it’s a very ecumenical sport,” said Mary McNeece Secretary for the group. She joined after her husband passed away two years ago and has been inspired by the camaraderie of the sport.

“I also find it meditative,” McNeece said. “Worrying about what is on your mind, you have to shut down, think about the moment, the team, the rhythm and for someone that’s busy it’s helpful.”

“The dragon boat community itself … the sportsmanship is second to none and that is what actually drew me to this... it’s a family,” Lou Fay said. Fay, from Hernando, is currently the Vice President for the club.

“I have been doing this for four to five years all together, everytime I go out there’s something new that you learn. Either about yourself, your teammate, the way the boat moves... you learn something every single time,” Fay remarked.

“I love being on the water, when you are on the water, when you are competing.

When you are training, everything else goes out of your mind. You are so focused on what you are doing,” Davies said. “When you are on that boat you forget it all.”

On Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year, the club conducts strenuous practices, going over commands, synchronization of paddling, speed and rhythm all while traveling throughout the scenic surroundings of the Homosassa River. Practices can run up to 2 hours and can be demanding in preparation for upcoming races.

“It’s counterintuitive on everything you do, you have to unlearn what ever your brain has and redo it and turn it to muscle memory,” said Donna Egbert. She has been involved with Dragon Boat Racing for ten years.

“They main thing for any team is synchronization, it’s absolutely essential,” Davies said.

“Everyone has to do the same thing at the same time, if notyou’re bashing into each other, clashing paddles, it’s a mess.”

Depending on the race, there are two boats that participate in competition; ten row or twenty row. Each row has two paddlers; one left and one right. At the back of the boat there is the steersperson, a highly trained crew member whose main position is to steer the boat and call paddling commands. The steersperson is also responsible for the overall safety of the crew. At the front of the boat is the drummer. This crewmember

is the most energetic member on the team as well as the one that has loudest voice. The drummer’s main goal is to keep the beat of the drum to the pace of the strokes and any off set drum beat may confuse the paddlers.

The crew is broken up into three groups, in front are pace setters who set the pace with their long paddling strokes.

The paddlers in the middle are considered the engine. The heaviest and strongest paddlers are in the back. These paddlers have to keep the pace so that the back water flow doesn’t push up to the front.

The placement of the paddlers also are positioned by weight/ experience and strength.

The senior women's dragon boat racing team was organized in 2017 and they have competed in the Seniors Womens racing class for the past 12 months.

“Very, very proud of the team.

They have been tremendously successful,” Davies said. “The women of the club are certainly the strength of the club.”

“If you want to get out with a great group of people and have the best workout that you could possibly ever have, have fun doing it [then] get out in the boat and [you’ll] feel so darn good about yourself.. it’s that much fun,” said Jill Ceriani from Beverly Hills and a member since January 2018.

sassa, which is just 25 minutes north of Weeki Wachee, FL. The club is opened to those that would like to at least see what is involved to become a member.

“Anybody that wants to join, we encourage it,’ Davies said. “We schedule beginners practices, and we do one on one coaching, which is very beneficial for beginners. We provide everything and if you want to try it...it’s free.”

Observing the members work as a unified team, hearing them laugh, seeing them smile, sharing memories and just enjoy being in the company of each other, that in itself would make anyone gravitate to this group, but what was really inspiring and motivating was witnessing people on the dock watching, cheering and seeing that “WOW” expression on their faces.

The Nature Coast Dragon Boat Club competes in festivals all year and will be competing during the Lake Hernando Dragon Boat Festival on November 10. Be sure to watch for my next article and photos from that event.

Technical Certifications

by ROCCO MAGLIO, CISSP For many careers there is a governing body that decides who is allowed to practice in the area and call themselves lawyers, doctors, engineers, etc.

Currently, in technology there is not a governing body. There is no degree required or exam that must be passed to enter into the profession. This may not always be the case, but it is the current setup.

Hiring managers/Employers have to be able to determine that a potential employee can do the job.

One of the ways they can do this is through certifications.

A certification is usually awarded after passing some type of exam.

There are many different types of certifications and they denote different skills.

There are certifications that show that you have a basic knowledge of a product(s) from a company. There are certifications that quantify general knowledge of an area.

These product based certifications are usually sought when a company is purchasing a product and they want to bring on board people familiar with that product. These certifications can get you in the door, but generally have a short shelf life. If you have a certification in Bobsoft 2017 in a couple years everyone will want a certification in Bobsoft 2020. This makes sense, since knowledge of a legacy product may not be very helpful with using the latest version.

The general knowledge technology certification can cover vast areas of knowledge, so the exams can be more difficult to study for.

These certifications can usually be kept with some sort of continuing education.

Some of these require several documented years in the field before you are allowed to become fully certified.

The certification that you should take depends on your plans. If you pass a product based certification and then attend college, by the time you are finished, few employers may be interested in that certification. If you are about to enter the workforce, look at the certification requirements for the jobs you are interested in. You should determine if the material looks interesting to you, since you will have to spend time internalizing the information to at least pass the test.

Medical team throws family feast barbecue for patients

You may recall that last Friday afternoon, some bad weather came through our area. Fortunately, the winds died down and the doctors of Florida Cancer Specialists in Brooksville were able to serve up a special dinner for patients and their family members.

Approximately 500 people attended the Florida Cancer Specialists’ 5th Annual Patient Appreciation BBQ. Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ tight end Alan Cross, two Bucs cheerleaders and ‘Captain Fear,’ the Bucs mascot were also in attendance.

Dr. Malhotra, medical oncologist, explained that they weren’t sure the event was going to happen earlier in the afternoon, when some wind took down part of one tent. Fortunately nobody was hurt, the storm dissipated and they reinforced the tent to be on the safe side.

Dr. Malhotra serves on the Executive Board of Florida Cancer Specialists.

He thanked staff members for all their help organizing the event and working tirelessly on the part of their patients. “I’ve said this before, oncology is a team sport and one person cannot do it. I wish

Dr. Bishay remarked, “Thank you all for coming out tonight despite the bad weather. We love you all.

We love our patients. We love to serve them. We love to spend time with them.”

Dr. Barakat said to the crowd, “We’ll always treat you like our family and we’ll do our best to make you better and we’ll fight with you all the time.”

Dr. Patel stated, “I’m completely humbled every year at this event. It’s really inspirational to see you all here.”

Dr. Malhotra told me a little bit about what this particular celebration signifies.

“It’s a very small gesture on our part, but it means so much to the patients.

I want them to see the human side of everybody.

Inside we’re clinical and methodical, here we can be a little more relaxed and just sit and chat. The community support has been so tremendous.”

They donate the extra food to homeless shelters. The feast is catered by Sonny’s BBQ. In regard to the patients, Dr. Malhotra expressed with gravity, “They go through a life threatening illness and in that moment they are so broken in a way. They are looking for hope and I think we are able to give them thatreal hope, not false hope.

Granted we cannot save every one of our patients, but I’m very proud of our team that they give 100% and the very best that can be done is done. ” "Thankfully our results are improving all the time,” he continued. “This last year has been a phenomenal year with immunotherapy. We have patients here today who most certainly would not be here without immunotherapy.”

He said like with many treatments, immunotherapy doesn’t work with everybody but it’s been a “significant, significant step forward.”

Dr. Malhotra stated that the success they are seeing with immunotherapy is through Florida Cancer Specialists’ participation in clinical trials.

For the Sharks, they are one of two teams in the county who have advanced to the FHSAA Class 5A playoffs, which are slated to begin this Friday night at 7:30PM. The Sharks, being the #1 seed, have home field advantage throughout regional play, and they will host the Gainesville-Eastside Rams. The other team to advance from Hernando County, the #5 seed Hernando Leopards, will travel north to face off against the #4 seeded Baker County Wildcats.

Competitive bike racing off the pavement

Josh Thornton grew up in the New England area and was introduced to cyclocross racing during the winter season in high school where he competed in cycling in his freshman year. New to this type of cycling, it soon became a self-challenge opportunity. Over the years this competitive sport became a professional career.

Wicked Awesome Racing, a husband and wife business, formed in 2013 after Josh decided to stop competing and focus more on coaching and designing courses.

“I noticed there wasn’t much of a big scene here, and I wanted that opportunity to bring what I knew of cyclocross to Florida,” Thornton said.

Wicked Awesome Racing held a two day weekend competition

series that took place at the Quarry Golf Course in Brooksville with a 1.5 mile challenging track of hills so scenic it’s hard to believe this place was previously a limestone mining area.

So what exactly is cyclocross racing?

Thornton describes it as a combination of mountain biking and road biking mixed into one.

This style of racing isn’t really about the speed, it's about endurance both physically and mentally. Course conditions can vary from one location to another and takes the racer to a new level by including a mixture of ground conditions as well as intense elevations throughout the course.

“Typically in Florida we call it our velcro grass, St. Augustine, bahiagrass, it grabs you and sucks the life out of you, so that ends up

being a physical challenge for us,” Thornton said. “Here a lot of times its dry and dusty.”

Elias Posth is from Citrus County, daughter Isabella, 9, is a cross country mountain biker and competed in the Turkey TraCX event.

“I think any form of racing you learn how to overcome obstacles, I think that applies in life,” Posth said. “She is just very resilient because of racing, I love coming out here and supporting her.”

“The coolest thing about cyclocross is when you do the race, some people are serious and some people are out there having fun,” Thornton said.

“That’s kind of the crowd and the scene, they [racers] like the community and it’s such a spectator sport.”

“I have more fun seeing people enjoy what I set up, than certain portions of my career,” Thornton said.

PUBLIC HEARINGS ANNOUNCEMENT S.R. 50 Project Development and Environment Study S.R. 50 from U.S. 301 to C.R. 33 Hernando, Sumter, and Lake counties, Florida Financial Project Identification (FPID) No.: 435859-1 Efficient Transportation Decision Making (ETDM) 14269 The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will hold two public hearings for the State Road (S.R.) 50 Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study. A PD&E study blends engineering evaluations, environmental analysis and public involvement. It is the FDOT’s process to adhere to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and state requirements. The S.R. 50 PD&E Study recommends widening the roadway to four lanes from U.S. 301 in Hernando County to County Road (C.R.) 33 in Lake County, a distance of 20 miles. The project also consists of intersection improvements, and enhanced pedestrian and bicycle features. The need for these improvements includes roadway capacity and safety. Do not protect children by projecting your failures on them Children are amazing in how they can change rapidly and drastically. An introverted, cautious preschooler can mature into an aggressive, extroverted adult. Human beings have genetic predisposition that can be altered through experience, role models and will power. Parents, other children and significant others such as relatives, teachers and coaches can inspire children to believe and do things they never dreamed they could accomplish.

When parents or other adults attempt to protect a child from difficulty or failure by saying “I could not do this or that either when I was your age,” is only giving the child an excuse not to attempt to improve. It does not give the child a message of encouragement to overcome the problem but rather it implies that the child does not have to work to try to improve since the parents succeeded without doing anything to overcome their weaknesses. It probably never occurred to the adult that they might have gone further in their own lives if they better developed their abilities and skills.

Just because a significant person did not overcome a challenge, this should not enable the youngster to follow this lazy and self-defeating path. These people do not think about the consequences of their so-called sympathetic statement to shield the student’s temporary difficulties. Besides, the child may not have the same difficulty as did the parent.

For parents who desire to protect their child from pain and anxiety for not being on par with other children this is a shortsighted approach. All children have to overcome many difficulties. The reality is, no child is perfect. Some have academic, social or physical difficulties.

A student may find reading or math easy but usually not both in the early grades. In later grades a student can persevere and compensate in order to become an excellent student in most areas. Besides it takes initiative and effort to develop solutions and follow through. As the saying goes: no pain, no gain.

The primary issue is the child has to find a personal strategy to develop his own learning style to conquer his learning difficulties.

Students have to determine what works best for them. Some may have to read the material several times, take notes, use flashcards, repeat the words and concepts to themselves. When they tackle the issue head-on independently there is greater opportunity for success.

They have to find the means to compensate for their weaknesses.

These students learn they are in charge of their own future success and have to make necessary changes to reach their objectives.

These are lessons of looking inside of themselves to arrive at answers when beginning to be an independent learner.

Saying the student is ‘just like me because I could not do this or that” results in a mental state of complacency. This discourages a child who is seeking to become an independent learner.

Projecting an adult’s lack of success on a child is an unfair, stupid and destructive act. Students would think, “I do not have to overcome this problem as a significant adult in my life did not do well in this area either.” This thought process leads to mediocrity not excellence. It does not foster the fortitude to strive to reach one’s goals but increases rationalization and a lackadaisical attitude to be less than what one could and should be.

Every different thing My grandson in the Air Force bought a motorcycle. I learned that he’d been wanting one since he was 13. I had one when I was in my twenties, but only for a week. The first time I stopped for gas, an old guy pulled in behind me, got out of his car, and demanded I get out of the way so he could fill his tank. I told him no, that he had to wait his turn, and he honked his horn and glared at me for the entire ninety seconds it took me to finish.

(He was for sure an early Exwork customer, yeah?)

Over the next six days I was cut off and honked at and yelled at with fists waving through open windows, and they cussed at me and pulled alongside me when I was in front of them at stop lights. Well, screw that, I took the thing back.

Within the year, two friends of mine died in motorcycle accidents. The first was the guy who taught me how to cast (molten metal into molds); he ran into a dead animal early in the morning on his way to work. The second was a young kid I worked with part-time at a pizza place; he sped up over a blind hill and ran into a tractor trailer, his bike wedged between two sets of duallies.

I texted my grandson, whom I used to call Maestro, but for now I call Rip (and I might start referring to him as The Illustrated Teenager ”Ref: Bradbury”because he keeps getting tattoos) and told him he needs to outfit himself with body armor, metal or ceramic, a double-hulled helmet, and a rocket backpack that is wi-fied to a sensor in the front tire that will, in a crash, launch him A winner is always eager to improve his performance, not settle to be less than he could be. Competitive performance is a double-edged sword where a person is never satisfied with himself even when he is at the top of his game.

There is always more that can be done. However, when a person makes pathetic self-excuses for procrastinating in completing assignments or doing shoddy work, it could and

What happens after death, I do not know. I hope for reincarnation, and so I could wake up a million years in the future and on a planet in a different galaxy. Makes me wonder when and where I came from before I was born here. I don’t know, and I probably won’t know the next time.

The only thing I do know for sure right now is that I won’t be ripped apart tumbling across asphalt. Thumbs-up, Rip. Personally, I rather drive one of those sandcrawlers like in Star Wars 4, the first movie. And my kids and grandkids should do the same. I t’s slow, but it’ll get you there safely. Of course, we’ll have to raise the stoplights much higher.

It’s a sobering consideration that emphasizes how we only have one existence and one chance to get it right. Once we cross over into the next life, there are no do-overs and no more opportunities.

This reminds me of the next reason why we have a hard time walking close to God and that is we are influenced by a rebellious nature. When we are born, we are blind to spiritual truth and do not have the ability to understand God’s word or the desire to seek after the knowledge and wisdom that we need.

This is why we must be bornagain so that we can be transformed into a new spirit and be renewed in our mind and conscience. We must have the correct receiver and be dialed to the precise channel in order for us to receive God’s signal.

I’m going to be completely honest, the Christian life is hard. With the two powerful forces that I’ve mentioned already, it’s no wonder why we have such a difficult time staying on the straight and narrow. This conflict is commonly referred to as spiritual warfare and I’m sure many of you will agree these battles are fierce and often.

Yes, we can have the victory over sin but the idea of the Christian fighting in a literal war means we are an active soldier that is always on duty.

If we believe our mission after we have accepted the gift of salvation is laying on the couch and eating ice cream, we can clearly see why we are always feeling like a punching bag. I realize it’s not popular but we’ve been called to pray, study, and fast so that we can build courage and discernment. If we are not equipped with our spiritual armor, using our sword and shield, filled with hope, and dedicated to interceding for others, how can we expect to be a successful warrior?

Even more important than all the religious things we say or do is having a personal relationship with the one who gave his life for us.

Most people want just enough of God to save them but not to the point where it becomes uncomfortable or requires something from them. It’s much easier to wade in the water that’s only up to our ankles instead of jumping in over our head with total dedication and commitment to his will.

We are first in line for his help and blessings but not really excited about words like sacrifice, perseverance, and accountability. So, how much of God do we want and how important is it to follow him? I’m reminded how the discipline of participating in sports is similar to the dedication and determination needed to be a serious and effective Christian. Champions work hard and have a vision of who and what they want to achieve which is another reason why most people are simply not interested. A truth seeker is listening, learning and focused on God’s voice and is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish their vision. Come to think of it, what is our spiritual vision?

Joseph left the building and promptly disposed of his portfolio in the nearest trash can to focus on wine instead.

“I’d been interested in wine since I was 14 years old,” he said. “It started when my aunt remarried and went back to our family’s hometown in Sicily for her honeymoon.”

He explained that his aunt discovered our family was part of a big wine cooperative and bought a bunch of their wines back home.

“I started importing some of the family’s wines and that’s how I could afford those shoes,” he smiled.

Joseph, 70, comes from a large Italian family and grew up in Brooklyn, New York.

“Coming from a large Italian family, my brothers and sisters were always joking that we should buy some property and grow grapes, a place where we could all get

hernandosun.com together, relax and enjoy ourselves,” said Joseph.

So Joseph did a lot of research, gathered a lot of information on wine growing in Florida and he and his siblings decided it could work.

That’s when Joseph found the 30-acre property near Chinsegut Hill.

“This property came up and it was perfect,” Joseph said. “It was a lot of money but the view is tremendous.”

Located on one of the highest elevations in Florida, the winery and vineyard is 275 feet above sea level.

In 2016, the family planted around 2,000 Muscadine vines (Vitis rotundifolia) but had to replant a large proportion because of damage by deer and wild boar.

Also planted were blueberries, olive trees, lemon and lime citrus varieties and kumquats.

“We can make other products too like limoncello and blueberry wheat beer,” Joseph added. “And we can
