On Saturday, Sept. 15 participants of the Arc Nature Coast along with clients of the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind had the opportunity to experience and learn skills needed for various jobs. Approximately fifty young people ages fourteen to twenty-one and more than fifty peer mentors ages sixteen to twenty-four participated in the first annual Job-A-Palooza at the Arc Nature Coast campus in Spring Hill. The event was sponsored by the Arc of Florida and funded by a grant from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

It’s been 34 years since “Ghostbusters” inspired by Dan Aykroyd burst on to our movie screens and it still continues to make a positive impact.

With its catchphrases “Who ya gonna call” and “I ain’t afraid of no ghost,” Ghostbusters centers on a group of eccentric New York City parapsychologists who root out and capture ghosts for a living using all manner of futuristic and weird equipment.

Spring Hill resident, Justin Correa, a longtime fan of the supernatural movie has chosen to turn his passion for Ghostbusters into something for the community and a way to give back.

“I’ve always been a huge fan and fascinated by all the specialized equipment they used in the movie to capture and contain the ghosts,” said Correa.

“So I did some research and discovered how I could create a charitable group and become “Ghostbusters” to go to events and raise money,” he said.

To obtain his Ghostbusters certification, Correa applied to Ghost Corps. Inc., a production company owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment. The franchise is overseen by actor, See GHOSTBUSTERS, Page 20

by SARAH NACHIN HERNANDO SUN WRITER For Migdalia ‘Dali’ Rivera, the newest member of the Hernando Sun family, Spring Hill is a long way from New York City – geographically, as well as personally and professionally.

Dali’s parents migrated from Puerto Rico in the 1950s and raised their family in Spanish Harlem, a neighborhood on the upper east side of New York City.

“During my childhood, my Dad was very involved in the civil rights movement and politics, and was part of a coalition in Spanish Harlem that met with the city Mayor to implement upgrades to Spanish Harlem,” Dali remarks.

As a teenager Dali joined “ASPIRA,” a not-for-profit organization whose mission was to help Latinos pursue higher education and leadership roles in the community.

“ASPIRA” helped me with the admissions process to a State University College after my high school guidance counselor advised I should settle for a two year community college.”

After a year she transferred to the prestigious Pratt Institute and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior/Environmental Design. Dali worked in this field for thirteen years as a corporate interior designer for large architectural, engineering and financial firms.

She moved on and started a business proprietary school to provide a career path for those that could not attend college. During this time Dali also entered into political life by running for City See RIVERA, Page 16

Vote-by-Mail Ballots The Hernando County Supervisor of Elections will be mailing vote-by-mail ballots to absent stateside and overseas uniformed service members and overseas civilians (also known as UOCAVA voters) who have already made requests on Sept. 21. The Division of Elections announced the deadline is Sept. 22.

For all non-UOCAVA voters, the window for Supervisors of Elections to mail ballots is from Oct. 2 to Oct. 9. The Hernando County Supervisor of Elections will be mailing these on Oct. 4.

A request for a vote-by-mail ballot to be mailed to any voter must be received by the Supervisor of Elections before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018.

The last day for Supervisors of Elections to mail vote-by-mail ballots requested after the initial deadlines listed above is Friday, November 2, 2018.

Voters who would like to request a vote-by-mail ballot should contact their county Supervisor of Elections office. The United States Postal Service encourages voters to mail back their voted ballots early to ensure timely receipt by Election Day. A voter may pick up a vote-by-mail ballot from the office of their Supervisor of Elections up to the day before the election or, if an emergency exists, on the day of the election.

Vote-by-mail ballots must be received by the local county supervisor of elections office by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day in order for the ballot to count. A 10-day extension exists for overseas voters. The overseas voter’s vote-by-mail ballot must be postmarked or dated by Election Day and received within 10 days of the election in order to be counted.

Techy new interactive playground equipment at Tom Varn Park

Driving by Tom Varn Park you may have noticed a colorful round metal structure and scratched your head in bewilderment. Well the mystery is now solved- that techy piece of equipment is the new addition to the Tom Varn Park playground- complete with a selection of fast paced music and flashing lights to get the little ones excited and ready to move. It’s actually a musical game, the object of which is to tag a light that switches on and off before it goes out. Players earn points with each successful tag.

It’s called Neos 360.

The Florida Department of Health in Hernando County, The Junior Service League of Brooksville Inc, and The City of Brooksville proudly announced the official opening of the Neos 360 Interactive Playground at Tom Varn Park in Brooksville, FL. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on September 10, 2018 at Tom Varn Park Playground where The City of Brooksville Parks and Recreation Director Mike Walker cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Many families from the community were present for the ceremony as well as several city officials including Mayor Betty Erhard, Vice Mayor Robert “Butch” Battista , Council Members Bill Kemerer, Brent Young, and Joe Bernardini, and City Manager Mark Kutney. Park and Recreation Advisory Board member Ashley Thomas was also in attendance representing the board.

The Neos 360 is a $30,000 interactive playground that provides a way to encompass the best physical endurance through full-body gaming and helps to develop agility, coordination, strength, and stamina. The Department of Health in Hernando County provided $15,000 towards the equipment. The Department of Health was represented during the event by Robin Napier. Napier spoke about how childhood obesity is a great concern for our children, and how the new NEOS 360 Interactive Playground promotes healthy growth and weight, balance, coordination, endurance and use of fine motor skills. Children can improve their social skills while they make friends through play. Napier stated that The City of Brooksville is “putting

residents on a path to better physical and mental health.”

The Junior Service League, represented by Alicia Smith and several members of the NSL group, provided $3000 towards the NEOS 360 project. Smith spoke as a representative for The Junior Service League of Brooksville about the JSL’s involvement in several Tom Varn Park projects since the

early 1990s, and how the group has provided funding and talents during construction of those projects.

Merritt Funeral Home sponsored the commemorative stone to recognize the day and the sponsors who made this project a reality for the community. During the ceremony, Brooksville Recreation Leader Jennifer Rafieli was also in attendance and provided

décor and refreshments for the event.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony, the children in attendance enjoyed playing with the new NEOS 360 equipment and many said they would be returning very soon to play on the equipment with their friends.

BROWN, MATTHEW RYAN YOB: 1986 CHARGES: ROBBERY SUDDEN SNATCHING, BATTERY ON LEO/OTHER OFFICER, RESIST OFFICER WITH VIOLENCE, BURGLARY-CONVEYANCE (x4), RESIST/OBSTR OFFICER W/O VIOL Arrested at: 09/14/2018 10:11 10554 SPRING HILL DR, SPRING HILL, FL, 34608 Arrest Summary: On 09/14/2018 at approximately 0959 hours, I responded to NAMI Hernando located at 10554 Spring Hill Drive in reference to a report of a vehicle burglary.

Information was received from Sheriff’s Office dispatch that the suspect, later identified as Matthew Ryan Brown, the defendant, was “in the vehicle” and was “trying to steal it”. Sheriff’s Office dispatch advised that the defendant was wearing a blue shirt, black shorts, and one shoe.

Upon arrival in the area of the aforementioned address, I observed the defendant running across Spring Hill Drive near the intersection of Spring Hill Drive and Mariner, travelling south. While attempting to maneuver through traffic, I observed the defendant attempt to open the doors of occupied vehicles at a standstill, due to traffic.

I then exited my Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle, advising the defendant to stop. The defendant then proceeded to run north back across Spring Hill Drive, attempting to open the car door handle of another vehicle at a standstill in traffic.

My agency-issued Sheriff’s Office taser was utilized and deployed, striking the defendant successfully.

Deputies on scene with me, including myself, handcuffed the defendant. In the process in attempting to handcuff the defendant, the defendant began physically resisting, moving his body and arms erratically.

The defendant then managed to remove one wrist out of a locked handcuff, whereupon the struggle with the defendant ensued again; he continued to move his body and arms erratically to avoid being handcuffed. The defendant was then successfully handcuffed again.

Once handcuffed, the defendant bit me in the leg and kicked me with his feet multiple times as I was attempting to keep the defendant from rolling into oncoming traffic.

The defendant was then transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

I then returned to the area of NAMI Hernando, where the report of vehicle burglary was initially made.

Contact was established with the complainant, an employee at NAMI Hernando. Complainant indicated that she observed a white male, later identified as the defendant via video surveillance footage, enter her vehicle, a silver Nissan Altima.

Complainant indicated that the defendant was “ransacking” the vehicle. Complainant provided a Sworn Written Statement.

Contact was made with the first witness and a victim. She indicated that she discovered that her black Jeep SUV was rummaged through.

pocket, which was later determined to be over 4 inches in length.

Deputy H. stated he was unable to see the knife while the defendant was inside of the vehicle due to a shirt balled up in the defendants lap covering the handle of the knife.

Deputy H. then removed the knife from the defendants pocket and placed it on the roof of the vehicle out of reach of the defendant. The defendant stated that he found the knife and was just going to put a new handle on it.

The defendant was arrested and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident where he was charged with carrying a concealed weapon. The defendant was given a misdemeanor court date of 10/12/2018 in court room B at 9:00 am. The defendant was also given a bond of $500.00.

She indicated that she then witnessed the defendant enter the Nissan Altima, running away from the vehicle.

The witness advised that, shortly after this, she witnessed the defendant attempt to open the car door of a white Nissan Altima, later discovered to be owned by S.A..

According to the witness, she then witnessed a male, later identified as S.A., chasing the defendant, who was holding a lanyard in his hand. She advised that she witnessed S.A. take the lanyard out of the defendant’s hand, whereupon the defendant left the scene on foot.

Contact was established with S.A., a victim. S.A. indicated that he was standing outside of a nearby business. S.A. advised that a white male, later identified as the defendant via surveillance footage, approached him and “snatched keys from my pocket.” S.A. indicated that the defendant removed his lanyard from his pocket, which had his car keys for a white Nissan Altima attached to it.

It was later discovered, with the first witness’ statement, that the defendant attempted to open the car door handle of S.A. vehicle, the white Nissan Altima.

Contact was made with E.C., a witness. E.C.indicated that he witnessed the defendant remove S.A’s lanyard with his keys attached and subsequently attempt to enter S.A’s vehicle.

Contact was established with W.B., who advised that, while parked in traffic, the defendant attempted to open his pickup truck’s door by pulling the car door handle.

Video surveillance camera footage was subsequently reviewed, which displayed the defendant enter the first witness’ Jeep SUV and S.A’s silver Nissan Altima. The defendant was then observed running away from S.A., with S.A’s lanyard and keys in his hand. The defendant was then observed attempting to enter S.A’s vehicle by attempting to pull the car handle.

HARRIS, DAVID WAYNE Sr YOB: 1964 CHARGES: UNREGISTERED MOTOR VEHICLE, RESIST/OBSTR OFFICER W/O VIOL Arrested at: 09/15/2018 21:18 LAKEFRONT RD & SOUTHVIEW CT, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34613 Arrest Summary: On 09/15/2018 a white Ford F150, bearing a novelty non state issued license plate, was observed traveling east on Country Road by Deputy J.A. Said tag read “PRIVATE” and in smaller letters above the word private, the tag read “NO DRIVERS LICENSE OR INSURANCE REQUIRED” and under the word private read “NOT FOR COMMERCE USE - PRIVATE MODE OF TRAVEL”. Based on the vehicle not having a proper tag attached to the vehicle, Deputy J.A. conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Country Road and Southview Court utilizing his marked patrol vehicle and emergency lights. The vehicle, however, continued north on Southview Court, and drove around Deputy W. at the intersection of Southview Court and Lakefront Road, ultimately coming to a stop in the grass area to the north of said intersection.

As Deputy W. approached the vehicle and the defendant, commanding him to show his hands and exit the vehicle, the defendant in turn began rolling the window of the vehicle up, concealing himself behind the dark tint.

The defendant was ultimately removed from the vehicle and detained.

A check of the DHSMV’s website revealed that the vehicle does in-fact belong to the defendant, however, it is not registered.

The defendant was placed under arrest; however, he made allegations of his shoulder being hurt on the way to the jail and was medically cleared at Bayfront Health Brooksville. After being cleared, the defendant was transported to the jail without further incident, where he is being held on a $2,000.00 bond.

The defendant was given a court date of 10/12/2018 at 0900hrs in Courtroom B of the Hernando County Courthouse. The defendant was also issued a criminal citation (AA00DME) for the unregistered motor vehicle.

SHADE, ROBERT EUGENE YOB: 1981 CHARGES: CARRYING CONCEALED WEAPON Arrested at: 09/15/2018 21:09 COBB RD & FORT DADE AVE, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34601 Arrest Summary: On 09/15/2018 after completing a traffic stop near the intersection of Cobb Road and Fort Dade Avenue; the defendant, Robert Shade, was asked to exit the vehicle by Deputy H. in order to conduct the vehicle search that the driver gave consent to do. After the defendant exited the vehicle before placing his hands on the roof, the defendant told Deputy H. that he did have a knife in his pocket.

THIEL, MICHELLE ROSE YOB: 1999 CHARGES: DOMESTIC BATTERY Arrested at: 09/16/2018 11:05 CATALINA ST, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 9/16/2018 I was dispatched to 6509 Catalina Street in reference to a battery.

Upon arrival to the residence contact was made with Lisa Smith.

Lisa advised a verbal argument ensued between the defendant (who is her granddaughter and lives in the same residence) and the defendant’s boyfriend. Lisa called 911 in regards to the argument, Lisa advised the defendant then began to attack her.

Contact was made with the defendant who openly stated she grabbed Lisa’s hair and dragged her to the ground out of anger that Lisa called Law Enforcement.

The defendant also stated she kicked her.

I did observe injuries on Lisa to appear to be from the altercation.

I observed scratches and a red substance, that appeared to be the consistency of blood, on the top of Lisa’s right hand.

Lisa also advised this occurred against her will and was unwanted.

The defendant was taken into custody and transported to the Hernando County Jail where she is being held on a No bond status due to the charges being domestic in nature.

The defendant was issued a court date of 10/12/2018 at 0900 hours in Courtroom B. No explanation

HASKELL, MELINDA ANN YOB: 1985 CHARGES: BURGLARY DWELLING Arrested at: 09/16/2018 13:54 8089 WYSOCKI CT, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 09162018, between 0900 and 1250 hours, the defendant gained entry into the screen back porch of the residence and once inside while standing on the back porch the defendant cut two screens on the north side of the residence that lead into the living room then also removing one of the cut screens damaging the frame. The defendant then was not able to enter the residence however, remained on the back porch sitting on the pool furniture after going swimming in the pool.

The victim who returned home at 1250 hours, did observe the defendant sitting on her back porch smoking a cigarette and drinking an unknown beverage. The victim

stated that after seeing the defendant who she does not know contacted the Sheriff’s Office. The victim stated the defendant saw her on the phone then exited the screened enclosure where she was later located and detained in front of 8039 Spanish Oak Lane.

The victim was called to identify the defendant at which time she arrived and was able to make positive identification. Once identified the defendant was driven back to the residence.

Post Miranda stated that she did not know the victim and could not explain why she was at her residence. The defendant was then taken into custody for burglary to an unoccupied dwelling and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident.

HARTWELL, MARK ANDREW YOB: 1971 CHARGES: TAMPER/HARASS WITNESS-VICTIM Arrested at: 09/17/2018 19:51 16425 SPRING HILL DR, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34604 Arrest Summary: On September 17, 2018 I was dispatched to 12217 Peaceful Ave in reference to multiple phone calls and a post card being sent by the defendant in an attempt to stop Lisa Wentworth pursuing charges for grand theft auto (case #2018-24294).

Upon arrival I made contact with Lisa who advised that on today’s date she received a post card sent from the Hernando County Detention Center from the defendant stating he wanted to see her and wanted to see his daughter.

Lisa advised that she had also received multiple phone calls from the defendant telling her to drop all charges and sign a waiver of prosecution.

An inquiry of the booking call logs matched revealed 78 phone calls made to Lisa’s cell phone. Lisa advised that most of the calls she did not answer; however, some of the calls mark would use a different name and his calls would show up as different numbers.

Lisa showed me a list of approximately 75 calls made to her phone that she states the defendant was attempting to get money from her and have her drop the charges against. Lisa completed a sworn statement which was later placed into records.

I then made contact with the defendant at the Hernando County Detention Center at which time he admitted to making phone calls and attempting to get her to pay for an injury to his hand. During the interview the defendant became agitated as I spoke with him about a possible no contact order that he signed during his first appearance at which time he ended the conversation.

While still in custody at the Hernando County Detention Center the defendant was then charged with witness tampering during a third degree felony proceeding.

The defendant was given a felony arraignment date of 10/16/2018 and is being held on a $5,000.00 bond.

Deputies resolve barricaded subject situation peacefully

On 09-14-18 at just before 8 p.m., Hernando County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of Long Hill Court in Spring Hill regarding a disturbance.

Upon arrival, deputies spoke to the victim, Joshua Swisher, who advised that he was assisting his brother Joseph, in delivering medication. Joseph works for a pharmacy in New Port Richey, and the brothers were delivering medication to patient’s homes.

When the pair arrived at an address on Long Hill Court in Spring Hill with a delivery, Joshua waited in the vehicle while Joseph went to the door with the medication.

Moments later, a male, later identified as James Richard Newcome, approached the driver’s side of Joshua’s vehicle asking Joshua what he was doing and why he was there.

Newcome then reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a handgun.

While Newcome did not point the handgun at Joshua, he did say that he was licensed to carry it and was protecting the neighbor’s property. Newcome then reached into Joshua’s vehicle and took Joshua’s cell phone that was sitting in his lap.

Newcome put the gun back in his pocket then walked to the front door

of the residence where the medication delivery was being made. Newcome spoke to his neighbor briefly and gave him Joshua’s cell phone, so he could return it to Joshua.

Newcome then went back to Joshua’s vehicle, again producing the handgun, again asking why he was there. Newcome then returned to his own residence.

Fearful of the gentleman brandishing a weapon, when Joseph returned to the vehicle with the cell phone, Joshua contacted the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived on scene, Newsome was very uncooperative and retreated into his residence, refusing to exit.

Newsome’s wife, Umaima Newcome was also inside the residence. Umaima Newcome was also uncooperative with law enforcement, and refused to exit the residence.

During the investigation, James Newcome continually called 9-1-1, advising operators that he would “take care of this in the morning” and insisted that deputies leave his property.

James Newcome continually stated that he was not going to come out of the residence and that he and his wife were tired of people looking into their windows.

Brooksville City Council approves FY 2019 budget

Brooksville City Council held its final public hearing to present the FY 2019 budget on September 12, 2018. Without citizen comments, and little discussion at the dais, Resolution 2018-14, the balancing of the budget at the 6.2000 millage rate was approved unanimously. The new millage rate is an 11.14% decrease from the prior year’s rollback rate of 6.9775 mills.

The entire budget for FY 2019, officially Ordinance No. 896, passed 3-2 with Council Member Joe Bernardini and Mayor Betty Erhard as the no-votes.

Bernardini and Erhard voted against the budget as presented, since they favored a lower rate for

salary increases for city employees. The budget for FY 2019 is to take effect October 1, 2018.

During the first budget hearing on Sept. 5, Finance Director Jim Delach presented the changes to the general fund budget respective to recent meetings. He reported a reduction in general fund revenues by $68,410.

Delach explained the decrease is partially due to revenue from the sale of a $50,000 fire truck winding up on this year’s budget. Another truck that was planned to be sold for $20,000 will be retained as a reserve for the fire department. This sale increased the carryover from 2018 by $82,908.

Exceptional students deserve the very best education available to them.

To ensure that Hernando County students are receiving all they require, the Hernando County School District wanted an independent consulting firm to perform an audit of the services currently being provided to exceptional students.

In April, the District sent an open invitation with specific guidelines, called a Request for Proposal. The deadline for providing the completed packet, or proposal, was May 30, 2018. There were seven proposals received, and after a committee reviewed and scored each, there were three firms that were invited to make a presentation on July 25, 2018.

The committee members selected Evergreen Solutions, LLC and made a recommendation to the School Board to approve the firm and award the contract, which would end on June 30, 2019. At the Sept. 11, 2018 School Board workshop, Director of Exceptional Student Support Services Cathy Dofka introduced Dr. Linda Recio, President of Evergreen Solutions, to the school board. Dr. Recio’s associate, Dr. Kim Cavanah, will be the Assistant Project Director and directly under Dr. Recio. Evergreen Solutions would provide audits on the district’s ESE program and evaluate areas for improvement.

Dr. Recio and Dr. Cavanah marily due to the 5% city employee wage increase that was approved by the council at the August 27, 2018 special meeting.

Also included in this budget is money slated for merit increases for managerial and executive staff.

Delach also factored in a $10,000 decrease in special revenues in Council’s budget.

Other departments expenses show anticipated increases with reductions in reserves, largely due to salary increases.

Interim Fire Chief Ron Snowberger recommended that the non-ad valorem fire assessment will remain the same as the FY 2018 budget, which is actually a reduction from what was put in the Truth In Millage (TRIM) notices. The council approved this resolution 3-2, with Council Member Joe Bernardini and Mayor Betty Erhard opposing.

Shooting at Lucky Fish Games on Northcliffe The Hernando County Sheriff Office has released the name of the man responsible for a shooting Saturday evening at Lucky Fish Games in Spring Hill.

The incident involving Roger Vazquez, H/M DOB/11-12-1962, started around 5 p.m. inside the gaming center located at 10470 Northcliffe Boulevard.

Witnesses told detectives that Vazquez, who is a manager at the business, had been acting erratically and waving a gun around inside the business.

Another manager, Laau Paselio, who was present during the incident, called the owner, Jose Santana, to report Vazquez’s erratic behavior.

Santana in turn called Vazquez’s nephew, Raymond Correa, H/M

DOB/07-18-1974, who witnesses said is usually able to calm Vazquez down.

When Correa arrived, he and Paselio were able to speak with Vazquez.

Eventually Vazquez was convinced to unload the gun and place it on the counter.

A short time later Vazquez pulled out a second gun that had been concealed and pointed it at Correa.

After a period of time Vazquez shot Correa twice.

As Correa laid on the ground, Vazquez continued to shoot him. Correa died as a result of his injuries.

Upon hearing the shots, witnesses inside the establishment fled to a nearby business to call authorities.

One individual, Michael Midolo, upon learning of

the shooting, entered the business where he confronted Vazquez.

When Midolo asked Vazquez what had occurred, Vazquez pointed a gun at Midolo and told him it didn’t concern him.

Midolo exited the business to call 911, and then waited outside for law enforcement to arrive.

When deputies arrived, Vazquez surrendered to law enforcement without incident.

Following questioning, Vazquez was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center where he’s being held on charges of Homicide and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Vazquez bond was set at $70,000 during First Appearance earlier this morning.

gave a thorough review of their services at the school board workshop on Tuesday Sept. 11, but when it came time to vote on the $161,000 contract during the regular school board meeting later that day, approval was not granted.

Evergreen has provided consulting services to more than 200 schools across 45 states in its 12- year history, Recio said during the afternoon workshop. In Florida, several counties have utilized Evergreen’s services. Martin and Lee Counties have had recent performance audits through Evergreen also.

Recio stated the team will consist of Recio, Cavanah, and four others, including a CPA who will evaluate the district’s finances. Cavanah and another colleague worked with the Department of Education specifically in Special Education compliance and IEPs. According to Riccio, the comprehensive audit will not be the same as in other counties but will be tailored to Hernando County’s specific population and needs, beginning with a review of the services that the County is currently providing or seeking to provide. Information will be gathered from district employees as well as parents and others in the community.

Federal and state requirements will be reviewed for compliance. The school district’s current practices and resource utilization will be “benchmarked” or measured against the standard or model of best practices. And this may

include things the district is providing or doing that are already good, or a best practice, Recio said. An implementation plan will be created for the district to follow.

The first stage, Cavanah said, is to ask questions that will direct the activities that will follow.

Cavanah said that of the 12 areas they will review, there are areas where there is “overlap” because special education does impact the whole school culture.

Communication with school staff is important so that the team can speak to and assess the right people and processes. The location of these students and with whom they interact is important also. “It’s the whole school experience,” Cavanah said. They will be looking at the “array of services,” compile the information, and report back to the district in a more manageable form.

It is not just the overview from the diagnostic Evergreen will perform, but also the discussions with the teachers and other staff who are directly involved with the students that will help them find what is good about Hernando County’s special education program and where they can improve.

Recio explained that a survey will be part of their comprehensive process as well. The RFP also requested a review of the district’s training and coaching program.

The process will take four to five months, generally, but Recio stated it could be from October to March, with training taking place after March.

Evergreen will provide monthly reports to Dofka, with the final report to be submitted in May 2019.

After the final report, Evergreen will provide technical assistance during the following year.

During the Hernando County School Board meeting later that day, Beth Narverud pulled the approval of the contract with Evergreen Solutions from the consent agenda for discussion.

“This is $161,000 to basically consult with our ESE department. I’m not sure that the money is best spent this way as opposed to putting the money directly into ESE. So I’ve had some serious concerns,” she said.

Dofka remarked, “It is nice to have a neutral set of eyes to look at what’s going on and what we’re doing- to give us information and help make things better for our kids.”

Narverud asked if this would help the ESE department with shortages“Is this going to help you hire people?”

Dofka replied ”No, what helps us hire people is to be given allocations.”

Board Member Gus Guadagnino asked Dofka, “If you had $161,000 is this what you’d do with it?”

She replied honestly, “No, I’d put it into other resources.”

School Board members Susan Duval and Mark Johnson voted to approve the contract with Evergreen Solutions, while Guadagnino, Narverud and Prescott voted against it.

Brooksville City Council to investigate impact of Amend. 1

At the regular Brooksville City Council meeting on September 17, 2018, the council voted 4-0 to approve a resolution brought by the Florida League of Cities (FLC) with modifications.

The resolution will allow the council to look deeper into Amendment 1, and evaluate the impact the amendment may have on property taxes and to urge residents to carefully consider the potential adverse consequences of the amendment before voting in the general election in November.

Amendment 1 will appear on the November ballot including the following language: “Proposing an amendment to the State Constitution to increase the

homestead exemption by exempting the assessed valuation of homestead property greater than $100,000 and up to $125,000 for all levies other than school district levies. The amendment shall take effect January 1, 2019.”

Currently, Florida has available up to $50,000 in Homestead Exemptions: The Florida Department of Revenue states, “When someone owns property and makes it his or her permanent residence or the permanent residence of his or her dependent, the property owner may be eligible to receive a homestead exemption up to $50,000. The first $25,000 applies to all property taxes, including school district taxes. The additional exemption up to $25,000 applies to the assessed value between

$50,000 and $75,000 and only to non-school taxes. (see section 196.031, Florida Statutes)” If Amendment 1 passes then certain homeowners could receive up to $75,000 in Homestead Exemptions. For example, a home valued at $200,000 currently receives a $50,000 Homestead Exemption, Amendment 1 would increase that exemption to $75,000.

Homes that are valued under $100,000 wouldn’t be eligible for the third $25,000 exemption.

With property taxes as the main mechanism to refill general fund coffers, any threat to that is going to worry local governments. Additional exemptions will likely drive millage rates up- so the smaller portion of non-exempt property values will See AMENDMENT 1, Page 6

how to go through life with their visual impairment. It helps them to be independent, so then you don’t have to always have people do things for you,” Sharif stated.

He and his seventeen-year-old mentor, Chloe Naughton had just met that morning. A junior at Hernando High School, she is part of a group called the Pit Crew.

Members of the group are each assigned a student whom they help with his or her school work.

“What I like best about being a peer mentor is getting to know the kid because you kind of think of them as different and not like us, but they are awesome people. I like hanging out with them.

They’re not just somebody with a disability; they’re a human being who is actually maybe better than someone without a disability,” Chloe remarked.

Seth Rider enthusiastically set to work on his job of stuffing envelopes at the Hernando Sun’s table.

He finished a record number in his five minutes and even came back later to do more. However, he confessed that stocking shelves and bagging groceries at the Publix table was his favorite task.

“I want to be a firefighter or EMT in the future, but I’d like to get a job at Publix to pay for school,” Seth stated.

His mentor was Desiree Anello, an 11th grader at Springstead High School.

“This is my first time being a mentor. I also volunteer at Oak Hill Hospital doing paperwork, delivering food to patients and other jobs. I want to go into the medical field when I graduate,” said Desiree.

At the end of the day, Interim School Superintendent John Stratton awarded medals to all the students. On hand to congratulate them were Arc of the Nature Coast board members Mike Prescott and Teri Nichols, as well as school board member Linda Prescott and Supervisor of Exceptional Student Services, Judy Everett.

Job-A-Palooza was a rewarding experience for everyone involved – students, peer mentors and employers. An email sent to Mark Barry, Executive Director of the Arc Nature Coast by one of the participants’ mother stated this very well.

“My son had such a fun, learning experience and his self-esteem has definitely improved as a result of this event. He proudly reviewed his evaluations with his father and me and the way in which he held onto his medal to show off to family and friends was priceless.

The Richloam General Store in Webster has a long and interesting history and has been recognized for that history in the National Register of Historic Places.

Eric Burkes, who is the great nephew of Sidney Brinson who built the Richloam General Store in the 20’s, completed the restoration of the interior of the store in June 2017 to its original 1922 size. It

was portioned off in 1935 for a residence in order to help supplement the family income by renting out the room due to a decline in the economy.

The small space included a bedroom, living room and a concrete floor.

A concrete floor was unusual at that time and added additional comfort to locals that were used to living with no flooring.

In the booming economy of the 1920’s the general store had a railroad depot and inside was the first U.S. Post Office in eastern Hernando County. The

general store was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in October 2017, and is the eighth historic property in Hernando County. In June 2018, at the stores second annual Hoopla, the historic marker was unveiled.

Hoopla, which is an annual event, commemorates the founding of the store.

At this year’s event over a 1000 people attended.

Free BBQ was served, the Judy Family performed and guest speaker Matt Caldwell, who is running for agriculture commissioner, spoke.

The Burkes family applied for and received an additional historic marker in August 2018 for the fire tower at the Richloam Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest. The new historic marker will be placed next to the fire tower on forestry land and near the location where Mr. Burkes’ great uncle Sidney Brinson of Shroeder Land and Timber Company once built a clubhouse in the 20’s for potential Northern real estate buyers.

by JUDY WARNOCK Special to HERNANDO SUN We took another afternoon to travel 25 miles north to the quaint town of DeFuniak Springs. The town has a railroad history and is named for the Vice President of the L & N railroad line, Frederick R. DeFuniak. The railroad depot remains---now used as the Walton County Heritage Museum. Where is the springs?

There is not a spring there like you might think of one.

It is not a long flowing river.

In the center of town you will find the perfectly round spring fed Lake DeFuniak.

It’s beautifully surrounded by a 1 mile walking path.

There are many historic homes along Circle Drive-the drive around the lake.

Turtles, ducks, and geese enjoy the spring fed clear water.

You can visit the Walton-DeFuniak Library right by the lake. It has the distinction of being the oldest Florida-built library building that is still serving as a library. Among the historic homes in the area is one called Sun Bright, a home belonging to Sidney Johnston Catts, the 22nd Governor of Florida. Catts was Governor from 1917 to 1921. His home has been listed on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places since 1979. Even new houses built try to retain the look of the years gone by.

You can also see the Chatuaqua Hall of Brotherhood, an auditorium that seats 4,000. The hall used to hold various seminars, classes, and retreats. In its day DeFuniak Springs was a final destination on the railroad line and a popular resort and retreat.

Later in the week we made a day trip to a totally different kind of town, Seaside FL. It is located a few miles down scenic 30A from our campground. I had read some newspaper articles about Seaside and was curious to see it. The town was designed in the 1980’s and claims to be an ideal upscale community with a small town feel. The houses are done in pastels, with front

porches for visiting your neighbor. Cobblestone lined streets. Decorative planters.

Schools, services, shops, and dining are within easy walking distance. A small home on one of those streets

can cost between $1 and 2 million. And the price goes up from there. Beach front lots even more. Vacation rentals are popular and there is a tourist resort feel as well as a small community. The beaches are moments away.

Around the town square they have a grassy common area used for events. Several food vendors operate out of airstream trailers, selling sandwiches and beverages.

That’s something you don’t see everyday. The town is dog friendly with water bowls set below dripping buckets of iced down drinks. Most residents get around by bike or by foot. In the town square you can’t miss the Seaside Post Office. It is a tiny white-washed building right along the main highway. The building is in the process of being moved one block away to a new location. It will be landscaped with rows of palm trees and be more of a focal point away from busier 30A. It will be more as originally planned--- to be a gathering place. It is one of the most photographed Post Offices in the U.S. We visited Seaside on a lazy Sunday afternoon and took several photos of our own. We had a late lunch and walked through some pricey shops. I read later that the Post Office suffered minor damage during a move on the following Monday.

We took a drive to Destin one day but found it too busy for our liking. It reminded us of Orlando and the Disney area. Much traffic, shopping, hotels, and tourist attractions.

Road construction, too. Stop light after stop light. There is a huge shopping area called Sandestin near Destin with all you could imagine. There is a large Bass Pro Shop there, too. Another time

we traveled to Panama City and Panama City Beach and were reminded of Daytona Beach. More high rises are taking over and public beach access is becoming less and less. A few of the smaller beach houses remained. We saw lots of bike and scooter rentals. Quieter area but still enough traffic for a weekday.

I did have a terrific milkshake in Panama City Beach.

We agreed there is much to do in Florida’s Panhandle and a week still wasn’t enough to cover it all.

Seann William Scott joins the cast after the departure of series star Clayne Crawford, who played Martin Riggs alongside Damon Wayans’ Roger Murtaugh. When asked about the casting change during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, FOX Television Group co-chairman Gary Newman shared, “There was really no thought of plastic surgery and bringing back the same character.

[Showrunner] Matt [Miller] developed a complex, layered character for Seann, which we’re excited to show the audience in September.”

We’ll have to wait and see how the series chooses to handle the major cast change.

Life Below Zero National Geographic, 9pm Season Premiere!

This Is Us NBC, 9pm Season Premiere!

The beloved drama returns with new adventures for the Pearson family. Last season’s finale offered glimpses of the family one year in the future, including newlywed Kate (Chrissy Metz) helping her husband, Toby (Chris Sullivan), through a dark period of depression. We spoke to Sullivan, who is excited for fans to see another side of his normally jovial character and shares, “I don’t think you really know anyone until you’ve seen their suffering or their sadness.”

The Mayo Clinic: Faith – Hope – Science PBS, 9pm Though short (by his standards), Ken Burns’ two-hour documentary film, co-directed with Erik Ewers and Christopher Loren Ewers, is nonetheless every bit as fascinating as his previous works as it explores the history of Minnesota’s famed Mayo Clinic. Along with Burns’ familiar approach -- including voice-overs from the likes of Sam Waterston and Tom Hanks placed over historical footage and images -- the film also combines the past with the present as it interweaves those elements with current stories of patients who have come to Mayo looking for answers.

Flipping Out: “A Very Lewis Christmas” Bravo, 10pm The team heads to New York City; it’s Monroe’s first trip, making Jeff and Gage nervous; Jeff charters a private plane and brings along Monroe’s nanny and grandparents; the team searches for real estate for Jeff’s client, Julie Grossi.

Sharks impose their will on Bears in blowout victory

District play is arguably as important to high school athletes and coaches as divisional play in the NFL: you can have wins in the conference which can affect playoff seeding, but those wins against teams in your division is so much sweeter, because these teams see each other frequently, and as such are more familiar

with schemes and play calling tactics. Such is the case between the Nature Coast Sharks and the Central Bears, who came into Friday’s first district game in two completely different areas of the spectrum: NCT riding their usual brand of offensive production, and Central in a rebuilding phase.

It’s unfortunate though that this game was over before it truly got started.

The Sharks won the coin toss, and on the opening kickoff, Hernando transfer Shemar Lawson took a

The victory marked the 10th straight win for the California Street gang after losing the first five games in the history of this in-county rivalry.

The Sharks (3-1) thoroughly dominated in all aspects: total yards (424-86), first downs (114), and red zone efficiency (NCT 5/5, Central 0/1).

Nature Coast was led once again by senior Mike Weston, who carried the ball 22 times for 183 yards and three scores. Weston was complemented by Fabian Burnett (five for 63 yards), Isaac Edwards (45-yard score on his only carry of the game), and JV call-up Anthony Treppon had 50 yards and a score on only three carries. Burnett had a nice run to setup one of Weston’s scores, scrambling for 20 yards like his inspiration, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, usually does to opposing defenses in the NFL. Head coach Cory Johns, who improved to 10-4 overall in regular season contests, wasn’t happy overall with the first half: “We didn’t play our best ball in the first half punting twice, but we got better in the second

half.” When talking about the Bears offensive game, Johns played man throughout the game, adding: “No offense to (RJ Harrington), but he’s not a quarterback, he’s like their Mike-Mike, so there’s really no reason to play anything other than man coverage if there’s no passing attack.”

The Sharks didn’t just beat Central with the run, but also the pass game.

Burnett went 5/10 from the air, gaining 83 yards and a pair of touchdowns to tight end Cai Teague.

A third score was in range for the duo, but the pass was short and bounced off Teague’s hands. Despite this, Burnett wasn’t shaken, but was confident in his ability: “That connection is going to be way better, not just with him, but all the receivers. We’re known for running the ball, but the execution in the passing game will come.”

Both teams have their second game in district play coming this Friday night, with the Sharks going north to face the

Crystal River Pirates, who beat Citrus 20-7. Nature Coast defeated the Pirates last season 19-7, but the Pirates are considered a favorite in the district with NCT and powerhouse Hernando. As for Central, they will host the Weeki Wachee Hornets in the Battle of Hexam. The Hornets are the current defending champions in this rivalry, winning last year’s matchup in a classic 34-33 final. Both games are slated to begin at 7:00.

Lions claim victory over Faith Christian in first game of season

Tracking Dogs This past weekend was the archery season opener for all of us residing here in Zone C, as designated by the Florida Wildlife Commission. I had the great pleasure of enjoying the opening morning hunt with a good friend on property near my home.

We hadn’t seen any deer yet, but by mid-morning, I was getting texts from a friend hunting about twenty minutes away who was. Not only was he seeing deer, he was fortunate enough to get off an arrow at a big doe for his freezer.

The only problem was that she’d fled the scene into a deep, dark tangle of woods and he was having difficulty locating her.

Meghan, my guest for the weekend, decided it best that we should go and help him recover his deer and found the job quite a bit more difficult than we had anticipated. In fact, between the three of us, the tangled thicket of briars and tight underbrush made the job impossible; at times it was necessary to crawl about on your knees as the dense brush made it impossible to stand. In little time, we knew that we were in over our heads and needed some specialized help.

The use of tracking dogs began and was highly developed in Germany and other central European countries many years ago and that tradition has spread to many parts of the South here in our country. Today, the many breeds of dogs used to trail deer include bloodhounds, beagles, curs, labradors and golden retrievers, though the labradors seem to be most popular amongst the trainers I know of.

Tracking dogs are trained to follow the trail of the game animal either by its own scent, or by the smell of the blood and they make short work of a recovery. Usually within minutes, they can follow a scent trail and locate a downed animal in the most extreme conditions, where otherwise it would take a man hours to unravel the trail. Physically, dogs can slip in and out of the smallest trails with ease. Sure enough, once the Labrador arrived and was put on the trail leading into the jungle-like forest, he was off like a shot and guiding our way.

I’ve witnessed trail dogs used in the past to recover game, but until this weekend, I did not know that there is an entire network of handlers offering their services throughout the state, free of charge to any hunters having difficulty locating downed game.

Their properly trained dogs ignore the fresher scent of healthy deer and stick with the main trail you introduce them to and the volunteers of this network regularly recover more than 125 deer per year. Hernando Christian Academy marked their first win as a 6-man football team on their turf against Faith Christian on Sept. 14, 2018.

“We are doing better than I expected,” Coach Raley remarked.

The game had a mixture of interceptions, strong tackles, perfect blocks and showcased some great coordinated game plays from the Lions’ offense and defense.

“It felt good,” said Evan Klukowski, quarterback for the Lions. “We did way better than I expected.”

“I feel great!” HCA’s Deontae Judd said. “I am so surprised with the team, I am so happy right now.”

The Lions conquered the heat and the scoreboard, at half-time HCA was leading 40-6 and after the

end of the third quarter the mutual agreement among coaches and referees was to set the fourth quarter clock for one minute.

Faith Christian did manage to add some points to the board in the third quarter bringing the final score to HCA 56 - Faith Christian 12.

HCA’s Sept. 21 game against Geneva Classical Academy was cancelled, which leaves the Lions with a week of practice before their next game on the Sept 28.

“My entire offensive line has never played football before,” Coach Raley said.

“Every bit of practice we get is very important to us.”

On Sept. 28 Donahue Catholic travels from Ava Maria to the Lions home turf for the most anticipated rival match up of the season.

Game starts at 4pm.

1. Nature Coast (13-1): Can anyone slow down Emily Gore’s Sharks?

Nature Coast is currently on a roll and the team’s only blemish on the season is a 2-0 loss to Lakeland Lake Gibson at the Bishop McLaughlin tournament. The Sharks have a real shot at finishing 21-1 on the season.

2. Weeki Wachee (11-5): It’s another strong season for the Hornets.

Weeki Wachee is currently on pace towards winning 20 matches once again and could be on their way to the district championship and a matchup against county rival Nature Coast. The Hornets’ only loss to an area team was to the Sharks.

3. Springstead (5-4): The 2018 season has been a bag full of questions for Springstead so far, as the Eagles haven’t been quite the same since a season-opening loss to Nature Coast. Since then, the club has gone 5-3, but the four losses have been head scratching for one of Hernando Coun-

We love Joey! He is a really still just a baby with a soft brindle coat, probably not even a year old. He was fearful and timid when he was found wandering the streets in Weeki Wachee. Nobody came to claim him, so he is available for adoption now.

He was afraid but always friendly and since he arrived at the shelter has turned into a real “love bug”. He is a small plot hound mix, weighing probably less than 40 lbs. He was fine with the other dogs in the play yard and although he had just spent several days confined to his kennel, he was sweet, playful, but not hyper. Obviously, hunters should not rely entirely on dogs for trailing deer.

FBTN dog handlers get involved only after a hunter performs a thorough search and has basically given up hope because of no visible sign. That is when these FBTN members will join the search and their success rate is unbelievably high.

One handler I spoke to recently reports a FBTN recovery rate of approximately eight out of ten success ratio of all tracking attempts. This is remarkable since the hunter or hunters have already accounted for many, many hours in the woods.

It’s his belief that the few deer that do go unrecovered were not struck a lethal blow and will recover. I took the time to burn up the phone

At the young age of 2, Austin’s grandfather Charles McKinney bought him a set of clubs and taught him how to play golf.

“I really liked it and he loved the sport,” McKinney said. “He passed away a year ago and I felt like continuing to play through high school would be what he wanted, so that is why I still play.”

As far as improving his game, McKinney says, “Distance control.”

“My drivers are great, my woods are great, my putting is pretty good, but chipping definitely needs work,” he remarked.

“I think they did pretty well, I was happy on some of the things that I saw, and some of the changes they made,” Johnson said. “It’s nice to see their game maturing as they go along.”

Johnson says his team’s ball striking is improving. “... It’s a process that hopefully in the next couple of weeks will really take in and make an effect.” To advance to the playoffs, there is a bit more work ahead. Johnson explained the goal is “to see a team score of under 200.”

“The last match they were at 219, if we can get a couple of the scores down to the 50’s I think we would have a chance,” he said.

Central’s Coach Tyson Ellis: “We did well today, we are getting more consistent the more we play,” Ellis said. “Now we are starting to get more matches in, so things are starting to settle down and we are starting to get better with our averages, so hopefully we just keep going in the right direction.”

Tracking deer and other big game is a major part of the hunting experience and is a skill, which can take many years to develop.

I would highly encourage any hunters taking up a bow and arrow, to spend almost as many hours learning to track and trail as they do shooting their bow. It’s a very important part of the hunt.

Now at 2-2 and heading into its toughest stretch, with games coming up against Lakewood Ranch, Sunlake, Hernando and Land O’ Lakes, the Eagles have to buckle

down.

Springstead ends the 2018 season with winnable games against Wesley Chapel Cypress Creek and Dade City Pasco, but their stretch of games coming up will prove whether the Eagles can overcome Alexis’ injury.

“We just have to get up and take it one game at a time. We’ll get back to work on Monday,” Garofano added.

Fundraiser clay shoot planned for nonprofit pregnancy clinic

New Generation is a Pregnancy Medical Clinic serving women and men in Hernando and surrounding counties since 1999.

They provide evidence-based education and services in a respectful and compassionate environment to those primarily facing pregnancy and relationship issues.

A New Generation also empowers women with the education they need to make informed decisions regarding their pregnancy and relationship issues. Pregnancy testing and ultrasounds read by a M.D. to verify pregnancy and gestational age are available on site.

Parenting, healthy relationships and anger management education are a few of the services offered which strengthen families and equip their clients to effectively face their circumstances in a well-functioning manner.

Prevention is a key part of A New Genera-

tion.

They have been providing Sexual Risk Avoidance Education in the Hernando County schools since 2000.

Having spoken to over 60,000 students, they continue their efforts to speak truth to the students of Hernando County.

A New Generation is strengthening our community by educating women, men and our youth to be confident in who they are. They are often the bridge from brokenness to a future filled with hope, dreams and success.

Their long term vision is to become a fully accredited medical facility that provides reproductive care with dignity.

This will complement their social service programs by addressing the physical needs of their clients, as well as their intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual needs.

A New Generation is a non-profit organization and will be hosting a fundraising event on Saturday, November 3, 2018.

This event will be a Clay Shoot at Tampa Bay Sporting Clays

located at 10514 Ehren Cutoff, Land O’Lakes.

Registration and a light breakfast will take place from 8:00 – 9:00 am and the shoot will

begin soon after at approximately at 9 am.

The award luncheon will follow at 11:30 am.

The registration form is available at anewgenerationclayshoot.org.

Shooters wishing to be on the same team should register on one form. There should be no more than four shooters per form and shooting experience must be included.

There will be 50 targets on the range.

Lunch will be provided as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place team awards and drawing prizes.

The shooter registration cost is $500 total for a team of four.

Individual costs is $150 (to be paired for a team of four at the

event).

These registration fees include ammo, 50 clay targets per shooter, as well as a Golf Cart per foursome.

This event is limited to the first 150 shooters registered.

by DR. WILLIAM LESTER HERNANDO COUNTY UF/IFAS EXTENSION Florida ranks within the top five states in the nation for wildlife diversity. Frogs are one of many species that call Florida home. Native frog species have flourished.

Florida is fortunate to have over 25 species of native frogs. Native frogs such as the green tree frog help keep pests such as mosquitoes at bay. Unfortunately, a non-native frog has invaded Florida. The Cuban tree frog (Osteopilus septentrionalis) has been in Florida since the 1970’s. They arrived from their native homeland of Cuba and other locations such as the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands. The Cuban tree frog has dispersed and now can be found throughout Florida, including Hernando County. Do you have a Cuban tree frog in your area? The first clue that you may have one of these alien invaders is that you may have seen a decrease in native tree frogs, lizards and even toads. Cuban tree frogs have a voracious appetite, outcompeting its competition. Their diet comprises of insects, snakes, lizards and other frogs. Can you identify a Cuban tree frog? Cuban tree frogs are enormous compared to native tree frogs. They are the largest found in the United States, growing up to 5 inches long. Cuban tree frogs have larger than normal toe pads, compared to native tree frogs and have small bumps on its back, very similar to toads.

Cuban tree frogs have a mucus on their skin that can burn your eyes if you handle them. The mucus can cause allergy-like conditions.

Be cautious with your pets as well. The breeding season for the Cuban tree frog is from May to October. Cuban tree frogs can lay thousands of eggs, which can develop into small frogs within 3-4 weeks if temperatures are optimal.

This is what makes them invasive. If you have a Cuban treefrog, take a picture or bring the specimen to our UF/ IFAS Extension Hernando County office for identifica-

tion. Do not confuse them with our native species. Some native species look very similar to Cuban tree frogs.

People Helping People in Hernando County holds fun-filled fundraiser

Dali has one son.

After he was born, she “semi-retired” to raise her son, who had a learning disability and was eventually diagnosed with ADHD. She always advocated for her son. In his formative years, she relocated from New York to New Jersey, to provide the best possible special education and environment.

Today, he is a successful entrepreneur in New Jersey, runway model, and Entertainment MC with a beautiful oneyear-old daughter.

Dali has been a dedicated volunteer with numerous mental health advocacy groups in New York and New Jersey. When she moved to Spring Hill two years ago she reached out to NAMI and eventually got a job as a Rehabilitation Specialist with Vincent Academy.

“I moved to Spring Hill because I wanted to be near my elderly parents and help them. My mother is in a healthcare facility and I visit her every day. My father is still living at home.”

Dali joined the Hernando Sun as a sales and marketing associate in July of this year.

The job allows her the flexibility she needs so that she can spend time with her parents.

It also fulfills her desire to help people.

“I have a passion and commitment towards helping others and that brings me joy.

Hernando Sun provides that vehicle.

I’m meeting so many amazing people. I feel that doors are opening to help community organizations and businesses to flourish.”

Dali enjoys a variety of activities in her spare time. She loves to dance – salsa and ballroom dancing. She also enjoys swimming and yoga, along with arts events, museums and films.

Like many recent transplants to Florida, Dali is finding her niche here. She is contributing her talents to the community and making Spring Hill a better place.

What better way to spend an hour or so than to be amused and amazed by a magician and help a worthy cause at the same time.

On Saturday, Sept. 8, People Helping People (PHP) in Hernando County, Inc. held two magic shows at Springstead High School Theater. The purpose was to raise money for the organizations’ many social service programs.

There was an afternoon performance geared toward children and a family-friendly evening performance featuring more sophisticated magic acts.

Local magician Elliott Smith entertained both groups with amusing antics and mystifying tricks. These acts included tearing a twenty dollar bill in pieces and then magically putting it back together, levitating a young member of the audience and taking pieces of different sized ropes, joining them into one rope and then separating them again.

Smith has been a performing magic for forty-three years across the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean. He has entertained political dignitaries like the Prime Minister of Canada and international ambassadors and has appeared with such well-known celebrities as Liberace and Jay Leno.

Before the show began, Evan Sommerfeld explained PHP’s purpose: “Our mission is to

end hunger in Hernando County by breaking the the cycle of poverty among the people it serves. People Helping People was founded in 2009 and has over 400 volunteers pouring out their hearts to alleviate hunger here,” Sommerfeld stated.

The organization does this through four programs that they call Blessings. The first is Sunday Blessings which serves about 133 meals every week to the needy.

These include homeless people, the elderly on a fixed income and families that are barely scraping by.

Second is Weekend Blessings which is designed to feed school children who qualify for the subsidized school meal program and whose families have limited resources for food on the weekend. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and better attendance at school is often attributed to this program. Approximately 650 children participate every weekend.

Another program is called Seniors Blessings. It serves over 250 senior citizens by delivering groceries twice a month to those living in subsidized housing.

Neighborhood Blessings serves the homeless who may be living in the woods or in their cars. Volunteers deliver easy to open canned goods, toiletries and paper goods.

People Helping People also has a vegetable garden maintained by volunteers. It produces nutritious food such as carrots, kale, beets and onions to serve at the Sunday dinners.

The most ambitious project of People Helping People is the HELP Center located at 1396 Kass Circle in Spring Hill. Open in the Fall, it will be a place where people can obtain food, support and referrals to other agencies. It will include a commercial kitchen, dining room, showers and laundry facilities.

“The HELP Center will be a place where all community collaborators will have a place to meet on scheduled days to meet and seek out the clients biggest needs.

With the opening of our HELP Center, PHP is bringing more help to our clients through more outreach programs that can give them a ‘hand up’ and not merely a ‘hand out,’ ” stated Board of Directors’ Executive Secretary Barbara Nassar.

Like any all-volunteer organization, People Helping People in Hernando County, Inc. requires community support to accomplish its mission and reach even higher goals. If you have time to volunteer or money to donate or

On Saturday October 6 it will hold its HoeDown for the Hungry at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Brooksville.

The country and western-themed event will feature a saloon, dinner, line dance lessons, along with door prizes, as well as drawings for cash and gifts. You’re encouraged

to wear western attire.

So dust off your cowboy boots, put on your jeans and cowboy hats and mosey on down to the Hoe-Down for the Hungry.

Some mothers are being liberated from career brainwashing Stay-at-home mothers were one of the main targets of the 1960s feminist movement.

These mothers were portrayed as victims of the vile patriarchal roots of our nation. According to these dissatisfied and angry females, men controlled all the institutions enslaving females to the home while the men were free to do what they chose.

All men were “living the life of Riley” while all females were imprisoned in the feminist narrative.

The feminist strategy to overthrow and replace the patriarchy with a feminist society was to undermine stayat-home moms by ridiculing the traditional female role. The mass media related story after story of mothers stuck in the home cooking, cleaning, caring for their children and being abused. These housewives were sold a bill of goods that they were missing the excitement of the sexual revolution on college campuses and an affluent and free future as a career woman. This campaign was an overwhelming success.

Large numbers of future housewives bolted from their family home to go to college for their newfound fantasy careers.

The ones who did not leave often suffered depression and anxiety from being left behind while the females became sexually liberated. College was women’s salvation while marriage was “walking into a living hell.”

At this juncture in our culture the tide is beginning to turn.

Mothers with college degrees and careers are realizing that they cannot recapture the wonderful, precious and special moments of being with their children. These successful and educated career women are choosing to stay at home.

Presently more professional women are voluntarily and gladly giving up their careers for the opportunity of being a mother at home. This is happening with the blessings of their husband who would be the primary provider for the family. These ex-career females have had firsthand experience of interacting with older career women who can be exceedingly unhappy and angry. Their career climbing cost many of these women unfulfilled marriages.

Too many females who wanted to have fantastic careers and children at the same time wound up with neither. While they were trying to reach the glass ceiling their fertility biological clock ran out leaving them stunned.

The “celebrated househusband movement” was less satisfying than expected for both the husband and wife. This arrangement was unnatural for both of them. The mother often regretted that she was not able to be in the family loop as much as she would like. She compensated by attempting to be more involved as a sympathetic friend rather than as a directing and nurturing mother.

At times she became upset that the househusband played this role, which he found difficult to relinquish when the mother returned from her business trips.

Often this made them rivals for the children’s attention rather than interdependent parents.

Catch any of that? I remember having to suffer through Roman Numerals in elementary school, a whole chapter in my math textbook, but not in high school. And little by little over the years (it was actually probably pretty quick) I forgot all but the basics; long numbers are now a mystery to me.

Oh, I still see such letters being used, especially for the Super Bowls.

The last one I looked forward to and watched all the way through was XXII. This upcoming one is LIII. Wow, that’s XXXI years ago! I was in Germany at the time, and so we didn’t get to see it until VIII or more hours after it was over—a recording provided by AFN. It was a big deal that anyone in the know about the final score from other sources should keep it to themselves, and rumor was that you could be court-martialed for divulging that information.

Throughout the years the quality of those drawings fluctuated from messy to sloppy, with careful, thoughtful artwork in-between. I was sure the good ones were from the mid-50s, but when I looked up one of those dates on my phone, MCMLXIV, it turned out to be 1964.

I was surprised — and annoyed: Why are such ancient numerals still being used at all?

I think when the government decided that Latin (and Greek) were no longer to be taught in American schools, the old masters exacted their revenge by leaving Roman Numerals on the curriculum.

Apparently there was no mention against that in the new rules. (This is not the same as cursive writing; that’s quick alphabet, not at all like ancient numbers that cannot be easily multiplied or added in a column.)

And how were they pronounced back then?

That’s what annoyed me, having to translate those capitals into English words and numbers (which was kind of like the nightmare later of trying to master the writing and reading of chemical formulas in the XIth grade) and never knowing the spoken version.

I’m sure when an ancient Roman merchant completed a transaction, he didn’t tell his customer, “That’s eyepoint-vee sestertii from eye dupondius, and eye denarius is your change.”

P.S. Our number 16 is written as XVI and pronounced “sedecim,” which I believe is annunciated as SEE-duh-kim. Good to know, but too late.

You keepers of entertainment, please replace that archaic nonsense with the modern, more sophisticated numbers.

Even though the feminist experience continues, there is a growing amount of evidence that this is not the utopian answer to raising healthy functioning children. Just like the Israeli Kibbutz experiments it sounded great on paper but failed to satisfy the participants.

In Israel the communal living, communist Kibbutz experience ended as an unworkable, failed experiment.

The career woman and househusband family configuration has lost its glorious futuristic glow.

Parents are realizing that neither the traditional mother nor father role was without benefits.

These modern parents have learned that raising a family requires an immense amount of time, energy and commitment by both parents.

Being a perennial adolescent while attempting to be an effective parent is impossible. Fathers and mothers have to put their personal desires on the back burner while their children’s needs and wants are placed on the front burner. Once this wisdom occurs the parents change their parenting vision. They realize the more energy devoted to their children when they are young, pays great dividends and satisfaction as they mature.

No longer do the parents look at their family from their individual perspective but as a family one. This maturity forces them to understand that raising children is a rapid, short time interval that has no “replay” button. They comprehend that a short-

term hassle gives you long-term pleasure.

Only by mothers and father doing all they individually can do to help their children become good persons will their offspring blossom. Mothers need to be there to nurture while fathers need to discipline and financially provide for the family while dealing with the pain and hassle of the outside world.

The family is a unit that should not be divided by envy of the necessary roles of the husband or wife. Everyone working together leads to a healthy and satisfied family. There is no simple, magic formula to meet all the obligations of being a parent certainly not by running away to be a career woman.

Decisions are a part of life that we face every day. With everything from what we will wear to purchasing a new washing machine, our choices contribute as key components of our success and failures which are also directly connected to our peace and joy. Sometimes we are strongly influenced with the mesmerizing sparkle and emotional excitement that pulls us into a hypnosis and this crossroad can be a dangerous place to make a long-term commitment. It’s also common to experience regret after making a decision that did not turn out like we thought it would and is a discouraging environment especially if we conclude there is no reasonable way out.

For example, it would be miserable to buy an expensive sports car and then discover its uncomfortable to drive and consistently breaks down with outrageous repair costs. Even more deflating would be to realize no one else wants it and we owe more than it’s worth.We can go down the list and see the many different areas of life where people are disappointed and feel hopelessly trapped. Things like a huge house mortgage that is more like a ball and chain than home sweet home, a boring job they dread every day, or maybe a relationship where they feel like they made a mistake.

Whatever the case, we do not have to search very far to find individuals that have learned how to fake a convincing smile while behind the mask there is much disappointment and agony.

So, if a major part of our happiness and contentment depends on right decisions, how can we improve our selection process from this point forward?

This is an important question because we are talking about our mental, emotional and spiritual state of being and it will take more than a horoscope or a fortune cookie to help us.Some may be thinking that life is similar to rolling the dice and taking random chances as the only option any of us have, which is the old, “you win some and you lose some” philosophy. This haphazard attitude might be the way a non-Christian operates but it’s not the way God intended for His people to function in this life. The Lord is always offering His compassion and power but is sometimes hesitant about fixing our problems until we are ready to follow His instructions.

How many of you have ever stood in a crossroad desperately trying to decide which way to go? You may have ventured out and tried with all of your strength to do something and was left wounded when the doors were slammed in your face. Yes, disillusionment makes us feel sad and sometimes can stagger us like a hard punch in the nose but it certainly does not mean we are finished by any means.Within the two camps of thought between God’s sovereignty that desires to manage our affairs and our freewill that makes us responsible for our own decisions, we can find a perfect balance. I believe we have the freedom to select and make choices but I also feel strongly that God can intervene however and whenever he wants.

Have you ever considered that maybe the Lord did not open a door that you were pushing on because he knew there were dangers on the other side that would harm you? Remember the old saying, “thank God for unanswered prayers?” When things do not work out like we planned, maybe we should stop and at least consider that possibly we are being protected from further heartache and See HOLLAND Page 20

They have all the necessary franchise licenses, have

store has been completed, the Burkes are in the planning stages to rebuild the train depot, cucumber packing house, multiple tool sheds, cane syrup kettle, and original kitchen.

Mr. Burkes has a 40-gallon syrup kettle and is planning a one weekend a month event to set up the cane syrup kettle and cook the sugarcane in old Southern tradition. Making cane syrup is usually a fall tradition when the sugar cane is harvested. The build-out of the residential kitchen that used to be on the back of the general store will be exactly the same size as the original kitchen. Mr. Burkes still has the kitchen sink and has the exact layout of how it once looked.

When the kitchen is rebuilt to original specifications and opened, it will have a one item menu available for purchase to visitors to the general store. Mr. Burkes has also registered the property for a 501c3 to build a nonprofit museum.

Any profits of the museum will go to a scholarship for local children. The museum will be built on the one-acre property the store is on and customers will be able to walk through the store to get to the museum. The family also has plans to put in a petting zoo with goats and an original chicken coop.

The visiting children and those in the nearby area will have somewhere to visit and experience what farm life used to be like.

They are also planning on rebuilding the packing house that would be

large enough to rent out for music venues where, again, profits will be used to raise money for local children’s scholarships.

All these plans will take a while to build-out. Mr. Burkes expects this to be at least a 5-year plan. He states it is not the construction of the buildings as they were made simply with corrugated metal and cypress. But it will be the shifting of the earth in preparation of the expansion, as well as, building the infrastructure, including internet cables and security systems to keep everything hidden, similar to what Disney

Correa, who also has a full-time job, creates most of his outfits and equipment himself. He cuts a fine figure in his ghost busting suit with all its patches, gadgets and gizmos.

He’s spent over $1,000 constructing his exclusive Ghostbusters iconic proton pack, vital in weakening and capturing ghosts.

From its weathered frame, housing, lights, wiring and particle thrower, the backpack weighs about 30 pounds.

And that’s not all.

Correa has also outfitted his personal vehicle with all the bells and whistles too, including the personalized number plate Eckto-1J. His car, the Nissan Ecktomobile, may not be an exact replica of the original 1984 movie but it certainly turns heads in Hernando County. It boasts some considerable roof-rack emergency ghost detection equipment, hoses and emergency flashing lights. It also sports strips of yellow and black along either side.

Justin Correa decked out his Nissan car with lights and the Ghostbusters logo and went as far as changing his license plate to Eckto 1.

“Wherever I go in the county, I’m stopped by all kinds of people and children who want to take a photo,” he laughed.

“I’ve seen lots of different squads around Florida and I love the reaction from the Ghostbusters fan base.

They just get so excited.”

Now, that is exactly what Correa and his team will do. The 6-person squad will dress up in full Ghostbusters regalia — proton

packs and all and participate in events around the county to fundraise for several different charities. All donations will benefit the charity of choice. Check out their Facebook page for birthday parties and other ghost busting services.

“We really want to do something positive to give back to the community,” he said. “Whatever I can do to raise money for sick kids and funds for the ASPCA.

“We’re both very passionate about the care of animals as they can’t communicate for themselves; so it’s really important to me that they get help too.”

Although the couple won’t actually be saving people from ghosts, their plans for charity work deserves support.

Be cautious and remember that when things seem too good to be true, take your time, analyze the details carefully and pray about

it. Yes, God does open doors and can guide us into amazing blessings but it’s usually as a result of us being spiritually prepared and having the right attitude. Life is what we make it and many times we are more unhappy with ourselves than we are with other people and all of our stuff. When we learn to depend on God for everything, He fills us with joy and peace and this will always change our outlook on life.

ANGLER OF THE MONTH At its September meeting, the Weeki Wachee Anglers, a family-oriented fishing and social club, announced that Emily LaMontagne was the Junior Angler of the Month for August. Emily, age 17, caught a 29” Gag Grouper on August 7th at The Tanks, 22 miles out of Bayport.

She was visiting from Orlando, and her uncle, Bob DeBatt, who is a member of the club, took her out on the BATMAN. He accepted a certificate and gift card on her behalf at the club’s meeting.
