John Lightsey, a first responder in New York during 9/11 still tears up explaining the events of that day and what came afterwards.
Everyone over the age of thirty knows where they were and what they were doing on the morning of September 11, 2001. For three Hernando County citizens, it was more than just an event that they watched unfold on television. John Lightsey, Don Barbee Jr. and Deborah Gray felt it personally. They each told their unique 9/11 story to a group of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at Winding Waters K-8 School this past Tuesday, the seventeenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. None of these students had even been born in 2001. History teacher, Michael Cooper arranged the presentation. Students filed into the gymnasium and talked among themselves while See 9/11, Page 5

hether it’s Binky, Blankie, Blinkie, Lovey or Silky in your home, every child has their favorite baby security blanket. But what happens when it’s lost? Gone? Disappeared? “My grandson, Austin, lost his Spider-Man security blanket, said county resident Debbie Kelley Lee. “He called it “Spidey and he was devastated when it got lost.” “We checked everywhere — every room in the house, kitchen cupboards, the car, the garage and even phoned Walmart Hernandez where we had been shopping, but we couldn’t find it.” Lee’s grandson, Austin, who is autistic and now almost 11 years old, became increasingly upset as the days passed without his “Spidey.” It was “Spidey” that comforted him and helped him go to sleep each night. Austin’s grandparents tried to locate a new blanket or a secondhand blanket on eBay to no avail. Eventually, they placed an ad in the local newspaper to see if anyone had one they would sell.” See SPIDER-MAN Page 20

Meet Ellen Tutko, one of Hernando Sun’s advertising sales executives. She has been with the newspaper for a little over two years and finds it rewarding and challenging, but as she says, “Easy is boring.” Ellen loves her job and it shows in her attitude. “The nicest thing for me is that I’ve been able to meet so many interesting people in the community. I have some great customers and I’m very focused on customer service. I always try to make sure that my customers are happy with their ads and happy with the responses they’re getting. I stay in touch with them and go the extra mile.” A native of Ohio, Ellen went to Capital University in Columbus and majored in English and Business Communications. After a career in the corporate world, like many other people, she decided she wanted to be her own boss. Ellen founded a family-oriented entertainment publication covering events such as concerts, fairs, festivals and sporting events. Her magazine ran for eight years, beating the odds of the average publication that has a life expectancy of eighteen months. During that time she met many famous entertainers like Jerry Lewis, LeeAnn Rimes and Dick Clark. She also had the opportunity to interview celebrities such as Todd Rundgren, Martha Reeves (of the 60’s vocal group Martha Reeves & the Vandellas) and Dan Fogelberg. Ellen employed about twelve people, including a couple of office staff, two photographers and six to eight writers, but she did all the advertising sales. “I was involved on all levels. It was 24/7,” Ellen remarked. After running her own business, Ellen and her husband moved to Hernando County in 2009
