Young environmental advocate leads local awareness and cleanup efforts

Ricou Browning is an icon of Florida films and a Florida Artists Hall of Famer. He is a pioneer in underwater filming. He is tied to the area through Weeki Wachee Springs.

In 1930 Ricou Browning was a student at Florida State University and a lifeguard at Wakulla Springs. A friend of his, Newton Perry, convinced him to show around a group of location scouts from Universal Studios who were looking at locations to film Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The Universal Studios group not only chose to film the movie at Wakulla Springs, but Ricou was chosen to play the underwater version of the Gill-man in Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Ricou continued to play the underwater version of the Gill-man in the sequels Revenge of the Creature and the Creature Walks Among Us. Newton (Newt) Perry had an idea to start an attraction at a spring a little north of Tampa.

Ricou and Newt headed to Weeki Wachee Springs.

It was the dominating fashion his team was able to do it in when the Leopards traveled down to Hudson to face off against a much improved Fivay team, that has been bolstered by the additions of players from the now closed down Ridgewood High School. Hernando was able to give Kazmier win No. 1 last week on Friday night and the Leopards rolled to an easy 40-7 victory over the Falcons.

voted to do so. While Commissioner Dukes is set against an Aviation Advisory Committee, Commissioner Holcomb is in favor.

“I am supporting this because in my mind we’re adding a layer of expertise,” Holcomb remarked.

When the Aviation Authority was disbanded in 2014, an ordinance was established for creating an Airport Advisory Committee, but no action has been taken on forming a committee until recently.

Commissioners are now discussing what role the committee would play and how often they would meet- the 2014 ordinance would be amended to meet the requirements the commissioners agree upon.

It is clear that they do not wish for the Airport Advisory Committee to hear real estate matters such as consents to mortgage and lease agreements as it would prolong the time frame of such business dealings. County Administrator Len Sossamon explained that they would consider high level items such as the airport master plan and layout plan.

Sossamon also stated that the committee would be comprised of seven members. Each of the five commissioners would appoint a member and the county administrator would choose two. There would be no alternates

and they would serve 4 year terms. Meetings would be publicized in advanced and recorded. There was some discussion on whether members could reside outside of the county, but seemed to agree for the most part that members must be residents of the county.

Commissioners would like to see consistent meetings- six mandatory meetings per year with meetings the option of requesting additional meetings if needed. The ordinance forming the committee was modeled after the Planning and Zoning Committee and it would function in a similar capacity. The BOCC would have final say on airport advisory committee recommendations.

Commissioner Mitten suggested there be a sunset clause, where the board must evaluate the committee’s performance in six years and decide on whether to keep the committee in place. However, the Board does have authority to pass an ordinance at any point dissolving the committee.

In a 4-1 vote, commissioners approved making the suggested changes to the ordinance and it will be brought back to the board Sept. 11 or the meeting thereafter for a final vote. Commissioner Dukes voted nay.

SWFWMD engineer: Withlacoochee gauges dropping upstream, but rainfall deciding factor on flood levels

Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) Senior Professional Engineer Mark Fulkerson, Ph.D., P.E presented to the Board of County Commissioners at the regular meeting on August 28, 2018 the current condition of the Withlacoochee River, and gave some insight on its history, impacts of seasonal rainfall, and flooding considerations for the future.

The third-largest river in the state, behind the St. John’s and Suwanee rivers, the Withlacoochee is 160 miles long, with associated streams, lakes and wetlands. Its watershed, the land that the river interacts with, consists of over 2000 square miles and covers all or part of eight counties.

Fulkerson describes it as a “large ... complicated river. There’s a lot of dynamics that drive how it flows, but rainfall’s really the key.” Summarizing studies, he added, “We don’t have as much control as we think we do.”

According to Fulkerson, awareness of the river began in the 1830s-40s, when steamboats were transporting soldiers and supplies during the Seminole Wars. In the late 1800s, burgeoning industries of citrus, timber and phosphate relied on the river as well. Today, the river’s purpose is recreation.

The first recorded flooding of the Withlacoochee was recorded in Trilby in 1833. Fulkerson reported that the Trilby flooding was the highest

ever recorded, seconded by the flooding on US Hwy 50 during hurricane Irma. Using photos for contrast, Fulkerson also showed photos of extreme drought conditions, where the Withlacoochee was reduced to little or no flow in 2000 in Nobleton, and in 2007 in the Croom area. He reports that more recently in 2012 and early 2017, there were areas of “little to no flow.”

Fulkerson explained that fluctuations in the Withlacoochee are primarily due to rainfall, however, rises in water level are not immediately apparent after a heavy rain. He gave the example of how different areas of the river peaked at different times, up to ten days following Irma. Calling it a “living, breathing system,” he further explained why the river doesn’t rise or flood uniformly, “if (the

entire river) was the same geometry, and level all the way down, and uniform,” water levels would be the same for all points of the river. Since the landscape varies along the river, water will be forced to flood stage at different times in different places.

Rainfall so far in 2018 has not only surpassed 2017, but also the average rainfall in a given month.

As a result, the Withlacoochee level began the year at a higher level, and continues to rise in accordance with rainfall.

As of this writing the level at US Hwy 50 in Ridge Manor is roughly 3 feet higher than 2017.

BOCC Chairman Steve Champion asked Fulkerson about potential flooding mentioned in recent local news reports. Fulkerson advised that “gauges upstream are going down.”

He believes that the

Withlacoochee will peak over the next day or so, but the amount of rainfall will be the deciding factor.

Fulkerson concluded his presentation with mentioning that he and his team are in communication with Hernando County Emergency Management and Public Works. He added, “I’m committed to keep learning. I don’t know it all,” and encouraged continuing cooperation between relevant agencies and departments.

Chester Bradshaw, an environmental conservationist from Sumter County addressed the board to refute Fulkerson’s findings. Bradshaw stated that in 1996 he submitted documents to the Withlacoochee Regional Planning Council and to the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, reSee RIVER, Page 4

Probable cause was established for the arrest of the defendant, Heather Perez, regarding grand theft auto of a 2002 green Ford Ranger.

Upon searching the vehicle, I observed 4 backpack style bags in the rear seat. Upon searching a black and gray backpack, which was located behind the driver’s seat within arm’s reach, I recovered a small black case containing a syringe with residue and a clear plastic cap with residue. These items tested positive for methamphetamine using NarcoTest 7623.

In another small pocket within the same backpack, I recovered a large yellow medicine bottle with 2 types of pills in it. According to Drugs.com, the 2 types of pills, (242) round yellow “2632” and (10) round orange “563 PILVA”, both were Cyclobenzaprine Hydrochloride.

I spoke with the defendant, who was in custody seated in the rear seat of my patrol vehicle. She was advised her rights via an agency issued Miranda Warning Card, at which time she understood and stated she was driving the vehicle.

She advised she had bags in the vehicle, however she denied ownership of the narcotics. The defendant was the last subject in the vehicle according to her and being that she advised she had belongings in the vehicle, she was charged with possession of paraphernalia and possession of a new legend drug without a prescription.

The defendant was transported the Hernando County Detention Center. She was given a total bond of $2000 and a misdemeanor court date of 9/19/18 at 0900 hours, in Courtroom B at the Hernando County Courthouse.

RUIZ, JORGE ENRIQUE YOB: 1972 CHARGES: DOMESTIC BATTERY Arrested at: 08/21/2018 17:32 LANDOVER BLVD, SPRING HILL, FL, 34608 Arrest Summary: On 08/21/2018, I was dispatched to Landover Blvd located in Spring Hill, Florida, in reference to a battery.

Upon arrival contact was made with the victim, who is 18 years of age, who advised that she was slapped with an open hand from her father on the left side of her face and on her legs after getting into an argument with him. The victim advised that recently came to Florida last week (Wednesday) for vacation and that she lives in New York and is planning on returning soon. She advised that the argument was over issues that she had with her father’s wife. The victim was able to show me some marks on her face and legs that were consistent with being struck as she described.

Contact was then made with her father, the defendant, Jorge Enirque Ruiz, who only spoke Spanish. I am lightly fluent in Spanish and was able to discuss what had happened.

The defendant advised that his daughter was disrespecting him and his wife and he didn’t tolerate disrespect in his house, so he did strike the victim by slapping her in her head then on her legs. Before I asked any further questions I read and had the defendant read his Miranda warning in Spanish through agency issued card. The defendant advised he understood his rights. I asked the defendant if his daughter had struck him and he advised no and that she was just yelling profanities toward him and his wife. The defendant was very upset and once again advised that he doesn’t tolerate that level of disrespect in his house.

Based on the victim’s statement, visible evidence of marks on the victim, and defendant’s admission probable cause was established for domestic battery.

I then placed the defendant in my marked patrol vehicle and transported him to the Hernando County Jail without incident, where he was arrested for domestic battery.

The defendant was given a court date of 09/14/2018 at 0900 hours in court room C and was given no bond status due to this being domestic in nature.

This affiant then conducted numerous field testing on the substances, but yielded negative results.

As this defendant was field testing the substances, the defendant then spontaneously uttered again, “It’s just turkey gravy seasoning.

I’m just trying to bond out my boyfriend, it’s not heroin, I swear!”

The defendant was placed under arrest for the above offense and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center without incident. The defendant was issued a court date for 9/18/18, in Room D, of the Hernando County Courthouse at 0900 hours. The defendant was issued a total bond for $5,000.

Those are drugs, but not hers.

BILLIPS, CAROLYN ANN YOB: 1988 CHARGES: POSSESSION DRUG PARAPHERNALIA Arrested at: 08/24/2018 16:14 1222 SYLVIA AVE, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 8/24/18, contact was made with the K. Radacky, who informed myself that “nobody” should be inside of her residence. After making entry, contact was made with the defendant, Carolyn Billips, who had locked herself in a bedroom.

Inside the bedroom, was a loaded needle, with a dark substance inside.

After field testing the substance inside the needle, the field test came back positive for heroin.

The defendant stated that she “doesn’t shoot up.” The needle was located in the bedroom where the defendant was had locked herself inside. Also located directly next to said needle was mail addressed to the defendant.

The defendant denied the needle being hers and stated that she “didn’t know” who it belonged to.

The defendant was placed under arrest for the above offense and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center. The defendant was issued a court date for 9/19/18, in Room B, at 0900 hours. The defendant was issued a total bond for $1,000.

HAVENS, CHRISTOPHER LESTER YOB: 1975 CHARGES: BURGLARY DWELLING Arrested at: 08/26/2018 08:01 615 W FORT DADE AVE, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34601 Arrest Summary: On 08/26/18 at approximately 0755 hours, Douglas Folsom called the Sheriff’s Office and advised he had just arrived home after being away overnight and he discovered the defendant, who he did not know and had never seen before, inside his home.

Douglas advised the defendant did not have permission to be inside the residence. Douglas noticed the defendant was wearing his personal clothes that were stored in a dresser inside the residence.

Upon my arrival, Douglas was outside and advised the defendant was still inside. I opened the front door, announced myself, and then saw the defendant walk into the living room and bend over to go through a white plastic bag containing clothes, which investigation determined were the defendant’s. The defendant was then detained.

Post Miranda, the defendant advised he did not know what was going on or where he was.

The defendant stated he did not know whose house he was in and he had never been there before. The defendant advised he checked the victim’s front door and said it was locked. The defendant stated he then went to the side of the house and “took apart” the fence leading to the back yard. He then went around to the back of the house and stated he entered the residence through an unlocked laundry room door. Once inside, he put on socks he found in the laundry room and put on a shirt and shorts he got from the victim’s dresser in the bedroom.

The defendant advised he also took a shower and laid in the victim’s bed.

The shower appeared to have recently been used as it was wet and the curtain was pulled back. Douglas advised the bed was neatly made before he left yesterday and the top sheet was now pulled away and it appeared someone had recently laid on it.

The defendant was arrested for burglary of a dwelling and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident.

BEAGLE, MELVIN RAY YOB: 1974 CHARGES: AGG ASSAULT Arrested at: 08/23/2018 02:45 5025 TREIMAN BLVD, DADE CITY, FL, 33525 Arrest Summary: On 08/23/2018 I was dispatched to the bar located at 5025 Treiman Blvd in Hernando County, Florida in reference to an assault.

Upon my arrival I made contact with the victim, the victim advised he and the defendant were involved in a heated argument at the bar over “politics”, at which time the defendant became angry and reached in his pants pocket for a camouflage pocket knife.

The victim further advised the defendant made threats of killing

him as he swung at him using a camouflage pocket knife as the knife was in the fixed open blade position. The victim stated he was in well-founded fear due to the defendant’s apparent ability to carry out said threats.

Contact was made with an independent eye witness, the witness advised he witnessed the verbal argument which escalated to the defendant reaching for his pocket knife and making verbal statement of killing the victim.

Probable cause established the defendant was determined to be the primary aggressor in this case.

The defendant was placed into custody and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident where he is being held on a $2,000 bond per the bond schedule.

area of Lodge Circle and Acorn Circle in Spring Hill, Hernando County, Florida, I observed a white male leave the front door of the residence located at 1311 Lodge Circle, which is a known narcotics house. The white male then climbed onto a black bicycle, and proceeded westbound on Lodge Circle, towards Pinehurst Drive. While going onto the road, the male did not have any lights activated on his bicycle, and was travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes of traffic. A traffic stop was then conducted on the male at the intersection of Pinehurst Drive and Lodge Circle (south intersection).

Contact was then made with the male rider, Darwin Duranko. Darwin’s identity was then confirmed via his Florida Identification Card.

A check of Darwin’s identification card was conducted via the Communication’s Center Teletype, who advised that Darwin was negative for wants and warrants; however, was on Florida Inmate Release status for trafficking Methamphetamine.

Due to the defendant’s narcotics background, and him leaving a known narcotics house, Deputy J.J. asked the defendant for consent to search. Darwin consented to a search, and asked if he could empty his pocket, to which we advised he could. At that time, Darwin began emptying his pockets on his own. Darwin pulled out of his right front pocket a silver and black portable scale which had a clear crystal like residue on it which appeared consistent with Methamphetamine. At that time, Darwin was placed into handcuffs for being in possession of drug paraphernalia.

The crystal like substance found on the silver scale was then field tested using NARCO 7623, testing positive for Methamphetamine.

Deputy J. then removed a black in color wallet from the defendant’s back right pocket, at which time I conducted a search of the wallet. Found inside the wallet was two clear plastic baggies.

One of the baggies contained a crystal like substance, consistent with methamphetamine. The other clear plastic baggie contained a light brown powder, consistent with Heroin.

I then read Darwin his Miranda Rights from my agency issued Miranda card. Darwin advised that he understood his rights and wished to answer my questions.

I then asked Darwin if he had anything illegal on him. Darwin advised, “There might be meth in the bags”.

STAFF On Aug. 22, 2018 local doctor Dr. Rashid Ismail Saba was arrested and charged with dating violence. Dr. Saba was employed by Access Healthcare and served as their Chief of Medicine at Oak Hill Hospital.

HCSO says that an investigation began in July revealed that Saba “pushed, grabbed, and shook the victim, against her will, while he was on duty as a physician at Oak Hill Hospital.

During this altercation, the victim sustained bruising to her forearm.”

HCSO detectives determined, “The altercation was a result of Saba allegedly being angry with the victim for being in contact with other men and one of his other paramours.”

The incident was reported immediately and Oak Hill Hospital removed Saba’s privileges to see patients at the hospital. Additionally, Access Healthcare LLC, issued the following statement in regards to Dr. Saba.

“Access Health Care

Physicians, LLC, is deeply saddened to learn of the behavior of one of its physicians. Immediately upon learning of the incident involving Rashid Ismail Saba, MD, Dr. Saba was asked to leave the Access Health Care Physicians’ medical staff. Pariksith Singh, MD, CEO of Access Health Care Physicians, has asked Dr. Saba to resign as his Chief of Medicine position at Oak Hill Hospital.”

“Our focus is respect for patients and healthcare personnel. We do not tolerate non-compliant behavior and will do our best to only follow the best standards of professional behavior,” stated Dr. Singh.

Career criminal sentenced to life in prison Submitted by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office On Aug. 23, 2018, George “Anton” Jackson was sentenced to LIFE IN PRISON for the crimes listed below.

Melinda “Mindy” Eastham-Jackson (George Jackson’s wife) was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the crimes listed below.

“This is a case of a career criminal who has damaged the quality of life here in Hernando County for way too long. Fortunately, due to the hard work of the men and women of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, it is unlikely he will victimize another Hernando County citizen. Furthermore, he will be unable to sell poisonous drugs to our citizens,” said Sheriff Al Nienhuis.

Original information: On 09-09-16 at approximately 9 a.m., the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team executed a narcotics search warrant at 25155 Kibler Lane in Brooksville, which is the residence of George Jackson, also known to his peers in the drug world as “Anton.”

The search warrant was the result of a lengthy investigation into Jackson that was conducted by detectives of the Vice and Narcotics Unit, as well as detectives from District One. Undercover operatives were able to make three separate purchases of methamphetamines and marijuana from Jackson, out of his residence. Two of the drug deals were facilitated by Jackson’s wife, Melinda “Mindy” Eastham-Jackson.

Jackson is no stranger to law enforcement. He is a registered felon with a long rap sheet that includes Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Battery, Possession and Sale of Meth and Cocaine, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Dealing in Stolen Property. His wife Mindy has no known criminal history.

Once the SWAT Team secured the residence, detectives identified four subjects within the large metal, warehouse type structure that was serving as a residence for Jackson. Those subjects were Anton, Mindy, James Golden III, and Jenna Storey.

Pursuant to the search, Vice and Narcotics detectives located over two ounces of crystal methamphetamine, with a street value of approximately $3000.

The quantity of crystal meth that was found carries a punishment of a minimum of seven years in prison and $100,000 in fines, if found guilty. Detectives also located a trafficking amount of hydromorphone pills (29), oxymorphone pills, and morphine pills. The search also revealed almost nine grams of powder cocaine, multiple pieces of crack cocaine, marijuana, and hash oil. Those items were all located in Anton and Mindy’s bedroom.

Detectives found Golden to be in possession of meth and paraphernalia. Storey was also found in possession of meth and paraphernalia.

While narcotics detectives were searching for drugs, detectives from District One and Two were searching the large warehouse and surrounding property for stolen items. They were able to find the frame of an Isuzu SUV that had been reported stolen.

Said vehicle had been “chopped” (dismantled). They also found a stolen motorcycle that had serial numbers removed. Given the items that were recovered, Anton was charged with Operating a Chop Shop and Dealing in Stolen Property.

TreeUmph! Adventure Park closes incentive package from the county included a rent payment of $1 for the first two years. The plan was for TreeUmph! to repay that $650,000 in incentive money via its lease. After they repaid the lease, they would be able to purchase the land, appraised at $306,447 (prior to the project buildout), for $100.

The year-three rent payments of $4,000 per month commenced on March 26, 2017. Sossamon stated that their payments are current through the end of July 2018. Following Hurricane Irma the Coors requested their $4000 payment per month be deferred until the end of September 2018, with 2% interest. County Commissioners did not approve the payment deferral.

The owners of TreeUmph! Adventure Course in Brooksville decided to close the park on Monday Aug. 20, 2018. The closure of TreeUmph! was discussed briefly at the County Commission meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

County Administrator and Economic Development Director Len Sossamon remarked, “I’ve reached out personally to the owners.”

He explained that the county is working with owners, Kathy and Aaron Corr, in order to remedy the situation. The Corrs own a similar adventure course in Bradenton.

They stated that the Bradenton attraction is carrying the Brooksville course and can no longer continue to do so.

TreeUmph! off of Cedar Lane in Brooksville, got a rough start despite a healthy economic incentive package from the county. They were planning to open last summer, but plans were thwarted by hurricane Irma, which took down many trees on the property that were incorporated into the adventure course.

According to Sossamon TreeUmph! has met with potential investors - some who are local business people. Sossamon mentioned that he found a potential lending institution for an investment loan.

“We’ve got the work in process to help them.

They said they are committed to trying to save it because they love the course here. It’s not just a cookie cutter course. The one down south in Bradenton has more artificial structures whereas this one here uses monstrous trees. We’re working with them,” said Sossamon.

Lake Townsen: A future home for our Gopher Tortoises

The relocation of gopher tortoises and recipient sites were discussed in a previous article published in The Hernando Sun: State of Florida seeks private partnerships for Gopher Tortoise conservation. Plans have been underway to establish a gopher tortoise recipient site in Hernando County at Lake Townsen Preserve, about 15 minutes north of Brooksville.

Lake Townsen Preserve is one of the seven preserves that make up Hernando County’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands program which was established in 1988. One objective listed for Lake Townsen is gopher tortoise management.

The Lake Townsen Preserve Management Plan states, “The gopher tortoise (GT) population has declined in recent decades as forage has diminished in the absence of fire. Regular prescribed burns will be conducted in accordance with the burn plan to reduce fuel accumulations, reduce oak and sand pine densities in sandhills, and increase open space with improved forage for GTs. Machinery may be used to reduce hardwood and sand pine densities where fire is ineffective. The Board of County Commissioners has approved development of a Gopher Tortoise Recipient Site on about 300 acres of suitable soils for receiving GTs that need to be relocated from other County properties. This recipient site will require habitat improvement, permitting, and development of a Gopher Tortoise Management Plan for the preserve.”

The plan also states that prescribed burns will be needed to restore and maintain the habitat at Lake Townsen Preserve.

“This unit is primarily comprised of overgrown sandhills and is in urgent need of habitat restoration, primarily the application of controlled fire.

The objective will be to restore the sandhills to maintenance condition where frequent prescribed burns can be used exclusively to maintain the habitat and support a gopher tortoise recipient site permitted by FWC.” Michael Singer, Hernando County Conservation Lands Specialist, has been preparing to turn

272 acres of Lake Townsen Preserve into a gopher tortoise recipient site, however there are land management criteria that must be in place before this area can be established as a recipient site.

“The way the site was initially... it was overgrown sand hill. All the little oak trees and other hardwoods had grown so thick and dense; it hasn’t been maintained and managed over the years, because it was vacant property,” Singer said. “I don’t think anything started happening until it came into the Sensitive Lands Program.

This property just sat and had become overgrown because things around it were being built,” said Singer.

The majority of the habitat restoration started prior to Singer's position with the ESL program back in August of 2017.

“Most of the mechanical work has been done,” Singer said. “They also did herbicide treatment on (selected) hardwoods.”

To get this particular area of Lake Townsen Preserve ready, the ESL program has plenty of items on the to-do-list to complete, below are just a few.

-Reducing the canopy cover The desirable amount of canopy is 40% or less and in order for area to get to that percentage there would be a need to remove hardwoods and cut the understory to let more light in.

A canopy is the aboveground or upper layer formed by a collection of mature trees crowns.

Having locations with dense canopies tend to blockout sunlight to the ground.

“Prescribed burns will promote new growth, it will actually help a lot of plants, especially in this type ecosystem that need fire for germination,” Singer said. “It will also help to prevent wildfires.”

Removal of the trees that went down during hurricane Irma is also needed in order to create open space for the desired gopher tortoise habitat.

“When Hurricane Irma came through it hit this area really hard,” Singer said. “We might need to come in and do some chopping and mulching so it will burn. The only thing that might happen with

the excess debris- it might burn a little too hot and damage some of the trees that we want to keep.”

-Increase ground cover of herbaceous vegetation The ground cover should sustain 30% or more herbaceous plants for the gopher tortoises, such as a variety of grasses and wildflowers.

-Soft Release Area This is a designated area within the site. This area will require silt fencing that is buried partially underground to help protect the gopher tortoise from traveling outside the recipient site.

“Tortoises have a strong homing instinct, they want to go back to where they came from,” Singer said. “You hold them in that area for about six months and eventually they will dig a new burrow.”

Man reunited with dog lost in Gulf of Mexico storm ENGLEWOOD, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man says he’s been reunited with his dog after the animal fell off his sailboat during a storm.

News outlets report that Shane Hale and his small dog, Harley, set sail for the Florida Keys on Saturday but got caught in a bad storm that night about 3 miles (5 kilometers) off Englewood, which is north of Fort Myers.

Hale says Harley was wearing a life jacket and attached to the boat with a tether, but the dog apparently slipped out of the jacket after falling in the water.

Hale posted about the lost dog on social media and learned the next day that Harley had made it to a nearby beach.

He says the dog caught a mild case of pneumonia but was otherwise fine.

Embracing Photography Lauren Anzalone indulges her second passion and begins a spare time adventure Lauren Anzalone

“It all began when I was in middle school,” she said. “I’d always loved drawing and painting at school and then my parents bought me a camera — that was the moment when I fell in love with photography.”

Meet Lauren Anzalone, 25, a teacher at Fox Chapel Middle School in Spring Hill.

All through middle school, Anzalone recalled capturing everything she could with her newly acquired camera.

“I carried it with me all the time,” she said. “And I began to take photography very seriously. Photography is so much more than just clicking a button.”

In her last year of high school, she joined the Photography Club led by Trevor Barlow, a multiple subjects teacher at Nature Coast Technical High School in Brooksville.

Barlow remembers Anzalone as being incredibly enthusiastic to learn as much as she could about photography.

“She’s someone who has vision and a keen eye,” he said.

He explained that photography is a talent, “you either have a good eye or you don’t.”

“Lauren certainly has talent and a great work ethic,” said Barlow. “And, she’s a wonderful per-

son to boot. When you see someone like Lauren pursuing photography, it’s rewarding for me.”

“He’s my mentor and joining his club just cemented my love of photography and all the techniques needed to be a good photographer, she said.”

Though in love with photography and the creative space it gave, Anzalone started college and earned her degree in Education at St. Leo University so she could start a career in teaching.

“I always wanted to be a teacher,” she said. “It’s a very rewarding profession.

Although, I’ve always had a passion for photography, teaching is also my love.”

Anzalone explained that choosing a career in teaching was “my ‘realistic’ dream job — it’s a lifelong career, challenging and so inspiring to engage students in learning.”

“What prompted me back on the path doing more photography was a trip I took with friends to a local farm,” she said.

Anzalone related how she and some friends visited Sweetfields Farm in Masaryktown for a photo shoot in the sunflower maze.

“Visiting the farm just fired me up all over again,” she said.

“I’ve graduated from the camera my parents bought me all those years ago and invested in DSLR

equipment,” said Anzalone. “I’ve honed upon digital photography and introduced myself to new techniques and software too,” said Anzalone. “It’s important to learn new trends and techniques as they can provide endless potential for inspiration.”

One myth I’ve heard for many years is that fall turkeys don’t vocalize. Fall turkeys will make every sound they can when they feel the need, but mostly their talk is of a social nature. There’s no urgency to their calling as in the spring with hormones raging. Fall birds are more concerned with finding food, dusting and entertaining as much company as they can.

Take advantage of that with assembly yelps, just remember to imitate a tom, not a hen. Toms have a deeper tone with a slower cadence to the calling. And if on the ground, don’t forget scratching in the leaf litter about you to further sound like a feeding bird.

Another thing to consider is that turkeys in general can be territorial and since fall turkeys are locked onto food sources, they are usually quick to defend their turf. A solo jake decoy positioned where a flock wants to feed usually won’t be tolerated, and they’ll stomp in and throw spurs at the interloper.

For best results, toss out some kee-kee calls from time to time sounding like a lonely and lost young jake.

An older, mature flock of toms may just swing by to either pick him up or run him off. Either way, it will bring them into range.

Speaking of the kee-kee call, it’s a call you really want to familiarize yourself with. Not only is it a call you need to learn to imitate, but to recognize in the woods. If you hear a lost jake out in the woods kee-keeing, crying out to the world that he’s lost and desperate for a friend, you

can call him in with ease by kee-keeing right back.

Callers in the fall are usually a bit less complex than those we use in the Spring. A simple single or double reed diaphragm, slate with mushroom tipped striker or a wingbone call are preferred. In fact, I haven’t missed a fall season

yet when I haven’t gone to the woods with my wingbone caller in tow. It’s the perfect call for me and there are a good many turkey which have graced my table because of it.

The regular season for prep football in the state of Florida began last week and we here at the Hernando Sun want to give you the Hernando County reader all the insight you can get during the 2018 campaign. We will be doing a weekly Top 5 ranking of the five teams within Hernando County.

We now take a look at the Hernando Sun Top 5 Prep Football Poll heading into Week 2 of the regular season.

No. 1 Hernando (1-0, 0-0): It was an overall dominating performance

by Hernando last week when they defeated Fivay 40-7. The Leopards were

able to receive solid performances across the board on offense and defense, with this week’s contest against Dakota Ridge of Littleton, Colorado being one of Hernando’s toughest of the season.

No. 2 Springstead (1-0, 0-0): There was never any real doubt that Springstead was going to have a very good team this fall, but the Eagles made sure to drive home that point last week in their season opening contest. The Eagles drummed Central to the tune of 41-0 and cruised to an easy season opening victory. This week Springstead will face off against a more formidable opponent in Weeki Wachee at home.

No. 3 Nature Coast

(0-1, 0-0): No team out of Hernando County had a tougher season opener than Nature Coast Technical, as they went on the road and faced Ridgeview.

Though the Sharks fell 30-27, Nature Coast was able to get a huge performance out of running back Michael Weston, who rushed for over 200 yards.

The Sharks will now turn their attention to Bushnell South Sumter this week.

No. 4 Weeki Wachee

(0-1, 0-0): The Hornets are still smarting from a season opening 37-20 loss to Lake Weir and have to quickly regroup as they’ll face a Springstead team seemingly operating on all cylinders. Jacob Gray’s group has a tough stretch ahead with Springstead, Hudson Fivay, Central and then Inverness Citrus.

No team in Hernando County was shutout other than Central in the season opener. There was always going to be growing pains to start off for first-year head coach John Warren.

Kazmier was quick to point out that there was plenty of great performances by his players all across the board.

From running back David Hale Bronson to freshman sensation Jordan Williams, who notched his first career varsity interception. It was truly a team effort for the Leopards.

“Fivay is very much improved,” Kazmier said. “Very physical and tough. Huge turnaround for them. They banged us up. David Hale Bronson put on a show.”

Hale Bronson was all over the place for Hernando, as the senior racked up 56 yards on just five carries, nabbed two assisted tackles and returned a kickoff 97 yards. If Week 1 was any preview of the rest of the season, Hale Bronson will be used in a myriad of ways.

Also having a big night for the Leopards was running back Israel Fields, who rushed for 99 yards on 19 carries.

Hernando quarterback Boston Tafelski guided the Leopards’ offense all evening long, throwing for 106 yards and two touchdown passes.

Not to be out done, Hernando’s defense also had a very solid outing against Fivay. Sophomore standout linebacker Koby Winn led the Leopards’ defense with 13 tackles, three went for loss. Fleet-footed safety Shavaris McNair also added 12 tackles from the defensive backfield.

It was a good start for a team breaking in a new head coach in Ka-

zmier. Former Hernando head coach Bill Vonada resigned back in the spring, but the Leopards have rebounded to start off the 2018 campaign 1-0. Hernando (1-0, 0-0)

will now go on the road this week once again and face Dakota Ridge (0-1) of Littleton, Colorado over in Orlando.

aged 65 and over will grow 11.75 percent over the next few years and account for 32.5 percent of Oak Hill’s population compared to the 14.4 percent national rate.

“These expansions will bring a broad and positive economic impact to our community,” said Young. “This new round of capital investment will create jobs in a wide-range of industries, particularly in the higher salaried nursing jobs.”

North Tower Expansion The first major project — a capital investment of approximately $40 million — will again change the skyline of Hernando County with the addition of 48,000 square feet of patient care area to the hospital’s North Tower.

Two new floors will be constructed vertically to the North Tower adding 70 private patient rooms — 34 on the 4th floor and 36 on the 5th floor — and expanding the hospital’s total capacity from 280 to 350 beds.

“We’re excited about this new project because we have chosen to use prefabrication technology in the construction process,” said Young. “Our sister hospital, Medical Center of Trinity in Pasco County, went through a similar transformation recently using the same technology,” he said.

“The adoption of using prefabrication is by far more efficient in building construction.”

Young explained that using prefabrication technology during the North Tower expansion will reduce overall construction time thus speeding up completion and lowering costs at the same time.

The prefabricated modules will include exterior walls, bathrooms, headwalls, nursing stations and more. They will be made offsite while the steel shell for the two new floors is being erected.

“We expect to see some movement on this project to begin in December 2018,” said Young, “and the project is scheduled to be completed within 16 months.”

Emergency Room Expansion The second project, costing a capital investment of $23 million over a two to three year period, will increase the overall Emergency Department square footage by almost 50 percent. The project will add 12,000 square feet to

Patient-specific areas will include a pediatric waiting room that will connect directly to the separate pediatric emergency room. Low acuity, resuscitation and GYN areas will also be added with a high level of service provided by board-certified providers and nurses. The hospital’s emergency medicine residency program, approved to train 18 medical residents during a 3-year program, will also have a private area for emergency room learning.

“We’re also expanding our EMS entrance so that emergency rigs coming in from Hernando County Fire Rescue and EMS and from other counties can park and recharge their vehicles while transferring their patients to our care,” Young said.

is planned for the south portion of Oak Hill Hospital’s campus and will add $13 million to the overall capital investment.

“Although we currently have two medical office complexes on campus, both are fully occupied,” said Young.

“This new build will add 42,000-square feet and allow for growth in our outpatient services and will provide office space for physicians graduating from our internal medicine and family medicine residency programs,” he said.

Completion of the medical office building is expected within a two to three year timeframe.

The hospital also announced plans to make investments in a new technology project next year. Called iMobile, the project will provide physicians and care teams

with secure smartphones to help improve care team communication and collaboration.

“This advancement in the way our physicians, nurses and ancillary staff can communicate securely is going to be unique,” said Young.

The smartphone application will give caregivers the ability to send secure text messages, initiate phone calls, view a list of hospital and provider contacts and send broadcasts within the patient care team.

Other infrastructure improvements and renovations to serve the projected patient growth include a kitchen makeover of $1.1 million,

bringing the total square footage to 3,500. The hospital will also repave and expand the parking lots, invest in a new generator as well as stainless steel housing for cooling towers and new switchgear, and upgrade the chiller systems for operating rooms.

“We are excited about announcing our new plans,” said Young. “It will positively impact our patients and enhance the excellent level of care we provide our community.”

In 2017, Oak Hill Hospital saw 17,851 admissions and 60,375 emergency room visits, including 8,481 pediatric patients.

able to find the Aquabelles, a group from St. Petersburg that performed underwater ballet.

One of the original ideas for the show was people performing normal tasks underwater. Newt and Ricou filmed underwater newsreels in the clear waters of Weeki Wachee Springs. A little while later tails were added and the underwater performers became mermaids.

Ricou wound up working at Silver Springs in Ocala. An encounter with

Ricou Browning and Courtney Brown hold a shark as stunt divers in 1965.

Ivan Tors led to a career at Ivan Tors’ Studio (the only major studio to have originated in Florida).

Ricou rose to become President of Ivan Tors’ Florida Studio.

The iconic film Flipper was Ricou Browning’s original story idea. He co-wrote and co-produced the original 1963 Flipper film. He also worked on the following television series from 1964 to 1967.

Browning directed underwater action in the James Bond film Thunderball in 1965. Thunderball featured massive underwater fight scenes with multiple participants.

Ricou continued to work on underwater action scenes in several other Bond films.

Browning’s work in the 1980’s included the candy bar in the pool scene from Caddyshack. The scene has since been turned into a meme (a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users). This showcased Ricou’s lighter side.

Springstead has made some positive strides.

Under the direction of head coach Kyra Leonard, the only thing that eluded the Eagles last season was clinching the elusive postseason berth.

A step back in time...

PHSC to host opioid crisis seminar in Wesley Chapel

Bebe Campbell of Tampa, sent us a photo of her mother Gladys Chalker (right) who graduated from Hernando High School in 1912. She married Charles Parker and is the mother of Ann Parker Emerson and Bebe Parker Campbell. We found that Gladys Chalker may have been a teacher at Centralia, which was a shortlived logging town located near present day Centralia Rd (476) and US 19. The Hernando Historical Preservation Society notes from a 1962 St. Petersburg Times article describing some of the aspects of Centralia life: “Catholics and Protestants worshiped in the same building; it served also as an entertainment hall. Misses Jennie Gozier and Gladys Chalker taught their kids their three R’s.”

Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) will host an Opioid Crisis Seminar on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at the Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel, 2727 Mansfield Blvd. The event will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in conference center B303.

According to the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than half of young adults who misused prescription opioids got them from a friend or family member. A representative from Pasco County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) will discuss the opioid crisis in Pasco County and the resources available to help eliminate this epidemic. In celebration of National Recovery Month, attendees also will hear from guests who will share their personal stories of recovery and learn about prevention, treatment and recovery support.

Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to attend at no cost. This event is part of a Community Awareness Series that meets a critical need for the community to better understand the availability of social services in Pasco and Hernando counties.

Mason has bottle-fed baby raccoons and squirrels and, unlike most people these days, has a love of spiders of all kinds.

Recently, the twelve year old was given the opportunity to shadow for the Weeki Wachee River Rangers. Doing something like that, as well as continuing to be the founder of his local Wildlife Warriors, helps Mason grow closer to his lifetime goal of becoming an Environmental Engineer. According to enviromentalscience. org, an environmental engineer is “the branch of engineering that focuses on protecting the environment by reducing waste and pollution. Environmental engineers design, plan, and implement measures to prevent, control, or remediate environmental hazards. They may work on waste treatment, wastewater treatment, site remediation, or pollution control technology.”

“He’s very outgoing,” says Jennifer Johnson, of her remarkable son. “If we are out and someone throws something on the ground he won’t hesitate to walk up to them and tell them where the trash can is.”

The other day, Mason and volunteers collected thousands of cigarette butts from St. Pete Beach which amounted to a total of 527 pounds of trash. “It was disgusting.” Said Mason’s mother. “If there is something Mason can’t stand more than anything, it would have to be littering.

It is especially common in our area.”

Mason holds a duckling at Golden Rainbow Ranch.

Twelve year old Mason Johnson, organizer of the Hernando County Wildlife Warriors branch, led Hernando County’s Mason relocates a spider- one of his favorite creatures.

Recently, Wildlife Warriors, led an event named “Hands Along the Water” which took place on Sunday, August 12, 2018. Mason organized the Hernando County portion of the state-wide event held to stand against Red Tide which has swept throughout Florida’s beaches wreaking havoc on our ocean animals and plants.

At 10:15 a.m. everyone that showed up for the event held hands and raised their arms as an expression that everyone is standing together for clean waterways.

Paula Nemet, a resident of Brooksville faces a tough opponent everyday. She has a blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma, but that does not stop her from helping others in their fight against this disease. She is part of a program called Multiple Myeloma MVP that brings awareness to this ailment and the importance of developing an individualized treatment plan with the physician. “MVP” stands for “Most Valuable Plan.”

Multiple Myeloma is considered to be a rare condition, but even so, affects over 124,000 people in the United States alone. There are many treatment options but this requires the patient to work with the doctor to see which plan suits them best. Myeloma MVP encourages patients to think about their priorities before their next oncology visit.

Nemet has had Multiple Myeloma for eight years and says that discussing treatment options with your physician is critical for managing the condition.

This is the purpose of the Myeloma MVP program.

She said that when she was diagnosed, even though she had worked in the medical field, she’d never heard of this condition. “That is why education is so so important.” She remarked that her life plan changed dramatically when she

received her diagnosis.

She and her husband had recently moved to Florida from Cape Cod Massachusetts. She said, “We were given this curveball of my diagnosis and we had to replan our lives. We needed to make a new plan. I am so thrilled that this plan (Multiple Myeloma MVP) is now available- because planning is so important.”

Last weekend Paula, who happens to be a Red Sox fan, delivered the Rays’ lineup card before they took on the Boston Red Sox at Tropicana Field during a pre-game ceremony. Then between the fifth and sixth innings, 25 Multiple Myeloma patients, their family members and caregivers were recognized.

Paula told The Hernando Sun, “I was just so honored and excited to be part of the festivities to help raise awareness for Multiple Myeloma. It was just amazing, it was an honor to be a part of this program.” She gave special thanks to Major League Baseball, Amgen Oncology and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation for developing the program and joining together to help the patients.

“As patients we’re just so grateful to all of these organizations.”

On how treatment programs should be individualized, Paula noted that before meeting with the physician, a patient should make a list of questions or

concerns, like if you were to go on a vacation- how would that get in the way of your treatment or how to adapt the treatment to your lifestyle.

“I am very proud of my journey with myeloma and I love to share that with other people and it’s great to have a camaraderie with other patients. Patient education is extremely important to me. That is what this program is all about - educating yourself and being able to communicate with your doctor.”

Nemet was fortunate to have a successful bone marrow transplant in 2012 at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa and is currently in remission. She runs a local support group- the Nature Coast Multiple Myeloma Support Group which meets every third Wednesday of the month from 6:00 - 7:30 PM at Florida Cancer Specialists; 7154 Medical Center Dr in Spring Hill.

Captain James C. West, Jr. aka JC the AC, Jimmy Jet, Black Jack Shellac passed away August 8, 2018 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Jim was a tidewater boy, born in Richmond, Virginia and raised in Norfolk, Virginia where he graduated from Norview High School. He went to college at Virginia Military Institute (VMI), entered the ROTC Program and graduated in the class of 1962. He joined the Air Force in 1963 and was assigned to undergraduate pilot training class 64xI, Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, Texas from July 15, 1963May 28,1964. From there, he was assigned to MAC, 17th Squadron, Charleston, S.C. where he flew C124’s (Old Shakey) taking cargo/ supplies all over the world including Vietnam during the war. The world was exposed to his sense of humor…an example comes to mind…when approaching Chateauroux AFB, France, the call to the tower was “Chateauroux, Chateauroux, this is 952. How do you do?”

Jim resigned from the Air Force in February 1969 and immediately joined Delta Airlines, Class of March 1969. He flew Delta for 31 years flying DC-9’s, 727’s, L1O11’s, 757’s, 767’s and was a flight instructor for 5 years Jim was known for his wit, great sense of humor and ready smile. Family and friends will miss him dearly; but he will always be remembered as the man he was.

Antifa is an anarchist threat to freedom In 2017 the Alt Right at Charlottesville, Virginia was led by two disgruntled progressives who wanted the political spotlight. Jason Kissler and Richard Spencer, were co organizers of “Unite the Right.” Both of their backgrounds demonstrate they certainly have never been believers in conservatism.

Jason Kissler voted for president Obama in 2008. He participated in the Occupy Wall Street encampment in Charlottesville in 2011. He was kicked out of this organization.

His job record is spotty from his problems getting along with others and displaying social anxiety. His father condemned him as a loser on YouTube. This is not a profile of a mentally stable person or White supremacists.

Richard Spencer of the University of Florida speech notoriety is also a publicity hound. His belief system is diametrically opposed to conservatism. He has clearly stated that all men are not created equal.

Also he notes that our rights come from a central government and are not endowed by God. He embraced national healthcare as part of the welfare state and does not accept capitalism. He has clearly stated he is a progressive and does not believe in the American way. His ideals conform with the socialistic ones.

In Charlottesville, 2017, there was a 20 to 1 ratio of Antifa and Black Lives Matter members to the Alt Right. In the 2018 Washington, D.C. rally there were thousands of counter protestors to 20 or 40 “Unite the Right” members. The progressive media has hyped the AltRight while the AltLeft ‘s immense violent presence has been practically unreported.

The current organized social unrest is a means of gaining leverage for social change. The U.S. anarchists want to ram down the throats of the people a collective state power that will impose their “justice” upon the people. Antifa social action misfits have adopted “The Black Bloc” tactics of the European anarchists.

They use bats, smoke bombs, bike locks, fists and other weapons to shut down any free speech. These Antifa punks resemble the brown and black shirt fascists of Hitler and Mussolini with their ninja dress and riot tactics.

The YouTube videos show Antifa members happily destroying property in Berkeley, California, cold cocking victims with fists and weapons in Charlottesville, Virginia and Washington D.C. Interestingly, these assaults are sneak attacks and the Antifa members quickly and cowardly run back to the protection of their group. There is a festive atmosphere when they openly and cheerfully chant, “bust a window,” “kill a F- cop,” and “meet me in the streets”. They smile diabolically when they say they want to kill President Trump. Acts of violence especially when there is no criminal prosecution leads to “parties of destruction.”

Antifa has demonstrated by their words and actions they embrace violence as a “means to an end.” This should frighten every citizen including progressives as our stability and greatness is derived from following the law of blind justice established by a majority of the people to create order. When violent fringe groups are allowed by law enforcers to confront each other like in 2017 Charlottesville, a riot will occur.

Psychic Interference (PART ONE OF TWO)

During my years at Exwork I encountered something that still mystifies me. I had noted similar situations before in my other jobs there, but garden is where I mostly experienced the spooky goings on. It usually happened early in the morning or late in the evening, when the store had few customers.

The first time it happened in garden, I still didn’t think much of it; it was a coincidence. One morning a little after seven, while I was loading an L-cart with hoses and hose accessories, I noticed a lone customer walking into garden. She disappeared down one of the aisles.

When I was done stacking as many boxes of hose freight as I could on the cart, I pulled it over to the hose aisle, and there was the customer, standing exactly where I needed to go, right at the shelf. Okay, so I waited. Eventually she left, and I stocked. I then loaded the cart with boxes of birdseed and feeders, and when I got to those shelves, there was another customer, whom I had not seen come in, standing exactly where I needed to stock the top boxes off the L-cart. It still didn’t register with me that something strange was happening. I waited, and when he left, I stocked.

When it happened a third time that morning, I began to suspect a conspiracy. I had plastic pots and cocoa liners on the cart, and sure enough when I got to that aisle there was a customer, slowly and oh so thoroughly examining the cocoa liners. What was going on? Were those customers actually agents sent by management to make stocking miserable?

Were they watching me on camera, and when I was with many progressive values, which the media is attempting to persuade the “deplorables” to adopt. The alliance between both Antifa and the media promote political correctness and suppress free speech. This certainly is anti American.

The progressives should understand what makes our country great is our constitutional law, which produces stability. Once our

Of course not. But then, how was this happening? A few days later, when I worked two to eleven, I found the same thing. I’d see a customer coming into the garden center, from inside the store or from the patio, and find him or her right in my way down the aisle I needed to go. And that happened again and again.

Keep in mind, I’m not talking about when the store is busy, and garden is swamped. During the day such delays are inevitable. Our store does not have overnight people to stock shelves in garden, so whatever is brought out in the evening is left for first and second shift to deal with, and that is a miserable situation for associates and customers. The floor is already crowded with stackbases, dump bins, four-ways, and standing PDQs, and when pallets high with boxes are brought out, plugging all available spaces, there is practically no room to maneuver. The whole floor is a series of bottlenecks and dead ends. Many customers complained to me that this is ridiculous, intolerable! Oh well.

As I mentioned, the encounters happened early in the morning or late at night, when garden was mostly empty. The first time it really struck me that something peculiar was going on was around 9:30 pm. I was coming back from my last break first Amendment is stifled, the rest of the amendments will crumble. Who would have thought? Delighted, I rushed over to the cart, picked that box off the top, and rushed over to the aisle. And there were three people standing right in front of the shelf.

I was stunned!

I started to turn away, but decided no, I was going to put those staples in their place. The customers looked like a family, a grandfather, a father, and a son, the boy being around sixteen. I pardoned myself, stocked that little PDQ, and flattened the cardboard cover as I walked back to the cart. I was in kind of a daze.

I began to wonder if there was some sort of psychic connection happening If there was, it was a most inconvenient one.

I refuse to admit that I ever once actually thought of those odd situations as being supernatural.

Nevertheless, one can deny the existence of ghosts and still be afraid of them. So I entertained the idea. It seemed to me something was going on, and I wasn’t ruling anything out. But to make sure, I tried a few tricks.

Memories can be a wonderful place to visit when they are pleasant and filled with peace and joy. On the other hand, not all of our experiences have been good and can be more like a haunted house on a dark and stormy night. We all have our collections of thoughts and our own task of trying to figure out a way to deal with them. As most of us know, there are positive ways and negative ways to handle our past experiences. We can look around and see that many people are not doing such a good job when it comes to emotional management.

The Lord wants us to give our problems to Him and allow Him to bring true healing as His way is always the best way.

Some will say, “you have not walked in my shoes” and this is very true. However, this does not mean the light of God’s love cannot bring you comfort, forgiveness, and happiness. His promises are true and cannot fail which to say the least is a tremendous offer to consider. His love, mercy, and hope is available to anyone who has the faith to believe that He can transform our disappointments and stumbling blocks into victorious stepping stones. In Psalm fifty seven, we read where David is in great danger and is hiding in a cave to escape the wrath of Saul.

However, even in this dark hour, we notice in verse one he is singing God’s praises, “Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until this difficulty and burden has passed” Psalm 57:1. There are many different types of trials and sorrows, but God’s arms are always open to those who trust Him. Maybe you were the one who was always picked last for games in gym class or in the neighborhood.

Maybe someone spread a hurtful rumor about you that caused you much pain and distress. There are many individuals who for whatever reason have a non-existent relationship with parents or children which is very painful. Some have been betrayed by a person they loved very dearly and are deeply wounded in the depths of their heart. Have you ever felt forgotten, rejected, alone, and unwanted?

Sometimes discouragement punches you in the gut and then slowly dissipates and then there are times when the voices that tell you no one cares seem to hang over your head for weeks or months on end. Whatever the situation, even if you have made huge mistakes and hurt others, God wants you to know today that He cares about you more than you can imagine. Since you were in the womb, He has never taken His eyes off you. He knows every thought, seen every tear and wants a personal relationship with you more than anything.

I remember years ago watching a family member make fun of his nephew who was just a kid. At birthday parties, family dinners, cookouts or whatever, the attacks were meant to be a joke for everyone’s entertainment and laughter – everyone except that young boy. The boy grew up and now does not call or come around at all. I wonder why? I also heard a testimony one time from a young woman who shared about her painful childhood experiences with an uncle. He would always tease her for being so skinny and say derogatory comments about her body. Sadly, these rude and tawdry remarks are the only words she can ever remember him saying to her.

I’m sure it never crossed his mind how this made a self-conscious adolescent girl feel. She went on to say this definitely had a negative impact on her self-esteem and later in life when he passed away she felt distant and numb as he seemed like a total stranger. Within our disappointments we can know that He will never hurt or abandon us and nothing can prevent His love from healing our mind and soul.“No, in ALL these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 8:37-38.

A proposal to enter an agreement with Florida Forestry to manage forest related contracts for the Environmentally Sensitive Land Program was approved on August 14, 2018 by the Hernando County BOCC (Board of County Commissioners).

“What that will do is allow us to have timber harvested,” Singer said.

“We have a couple of sites that this will be useful and this is one.”

County documentation explains, “Timbering activities can be used as an acceptable land management technique on County

Singer stated for clarification in an email, “The agreement itself is for utilizing the expertise of the Florida Forest Service (FFS) for timber management activities. Simply put it gives the county another tool in its tool box to better manage its properties.

In the case of the Lake Townsen Gopher Tortoise Recipient Site, the County can now potentially restore the habitat more quickly.”

The Purple Haired Principal Moton Elementary was rated a D school in 2016 and 2017. If Moton Elementary had received lower than a C in 2018, this would have triggered changes.

The new principal Brent Gaustad used a novel technique to motivate the students. He allowed them to vote on what they would like him to do if Moton improved their grade to a C. They voted overwhelmingly for Mr. Gaustad to dye his hair purple if the school’s grade improved.

Mr. Gaustad made good on his promise six weeks early, dyeing his hair purple. His original idea was to use spray on color, but the students objected, because they did not consider that to be dyeing his hair.

Moton will have a purple haired principal for a while.
