According to the U.S. census in 2010, the population in Hernando County was estimated at 172,000 and seven years later that number rose to 186,000.

The rise of the population means more land development which in turn means more wildlife habitat lost especially for one particular species that holds an extremely valuable place in our ecosystem: The Florida Gopher Tortoise.

The rest of the group of about 20 special needs individuals who are part of The Arc Nature Coast program and 6 volunteers remained inside Global Jetcare headquarters and watched through the window as Kathleen was carefully strapped in, hoisted up and brought through the small doorway of the plane- an engineering feat in itself.

It was an exciting day for Kathleen and her friends at the Arc Nature Coast. Kathleen was near tears as she exclaimed, “That is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life!”

It was her idea to let the crew at Global Jetcare load her into their Learjet on a gurney as if she was one of their patients. Global Jetcare flies all over the world in order to transport the ill or wounded for medical treatment.

My husband Jay, of 47 years, and I have resided in this beautiful community for 35 years. Both our children, son Jay II and daughter Dayna, graduated from the Hernando County school system. Additionally, both attended and graduated from Florida colleges. This firsthand experience gives me greater insight to the needs of our schools and a more amiable perspective when making decisions to provide the best educational opportunities available to our Hernando County students.

I had a very successful career with Delta Airlines, retiring after 32 years, in 2002. In 1990 I was elected to the Hernando County School Board. I fought hard for the students, teachers, non-instructional employees and parents, while battling an out of control budget. I was elected to the Hernando County Board of County Commission and served the public for 12 years as a county commissioner.

My community involve-

ment goes well beyond government. I am presently an active volunteer for NAMI Hernando (National Alliance on Mental Illness).

I hope this helps you to understand just how important this community is to me and the time and effort I have put in to helping Hernando County remain a great place to live. This goes to the core of my personality and comes from the bottom of my heart. BY CANDIDATE: Jimmy has been heavily involved with the School District for several years. As Chairman of the Steering Committee, he most recently spearheaded the campaign to revive the half cent, which will generate $120 million over ten years for school capital improvements. The initiative passed by a 60.5% majority. During the campaign, Jimmy visited all Hernando county schools and met with teachers, students and school employees who shared the needs of the District with him. He saw the needs are great and decided to run for School Board.

Jimmy Lodato was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, where he graduated from Jefferson High School and attended the University of Tampa. After a successful career as Vice President with a national company, Jimmy founded three businesses specializing in statewide sales, service, marketing and advertising of non-food products in the food and drug trade. He and his wife, Tammy, have been married over 37 years

1. Expand vocational training. Last year 1,500 students graduated and over 500 will not attend college. Vocational training will provide these students with the skills to get a job right out of high school that will lead to a successful career path.

2. Reduce busing for elementary schools to one mile (from two miles) and add sidewalks to all schools. Our young children are at risk every day walking to school alone, in inclement weather, and in the street.

3. Increase teacher pay and benefits. Teachers, in my opinion, are under appreciated. Everyone who has attended school always remembers the teachers who had the greatest influence on their lives. I want teachers to have the respect and appreciation they deserve. Dedicated happy teachers create happy students, which leads to a positive learning environment. Happy students make happy parents, which will lead to a strong bond within our community.

The Hernando County School Board consists of five members. Each of these members are required to reside within the district from which he or she is elected.

Sergeant B.C. then made contact with a white male traveling on foot at the intersection of Cobblestone Drive and Holiday Drive. At first the subject, later identified as Doyle Steven Loetscher, Jr., denied knowing anything about the situation, but upon further investigation Doyle admitted to the crimes post Miranda to Detective J.M. Doyle completed a sworn written statement admitting to stealing the two vehicles (second vehicle documented under HCSO 2018-23964).

LOETSCHER, DOYLE STEVEN Jr YOB: 1975 CHARGES: GRAND THEFT-AUTO Arrested at: 08/01/2018 23:37 COBBLESTONE DR & HOLIDAY DR, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 08/01/2018 at approximately 2202 hours I arrived to the Speedway Gas Station located at 3495 Deltona Boulevard in reference to a stolen vehicle.

Upon my arrival contact was made with Carlos P., who advised that someone had stolen his beige in color 2001 Chevy Tahoe bearing FL tag *****. Carlos advised that he left his vehicle running while he ran inside to buy some items from the gas station, and that no one had permission to take his vehicle. Carlos advised that as he exited the store he observed his vehicle being driven away southbound on Deltona Boulevard.

Carlos advised he was unable to provide a suspect description, but stated that his vehicle has front end damage. Carlos then signed a stolen vehicle affidavit.

Patrol deputies and detectives began to be on lookout for the Chevy Tahoe in the area of the last known direction of travel. A vehicle matching the description was found abandoned at the intersection of Pinehurst Drive and Cobblestone Drive. Patrol deputies and detectives then began to be on lookout for a white male traveling on foot in the area.

Doyle was then placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail where he was then turned over to detention deputies without incident. Doyle was given a court date of 08/31/2018 at 0830 hours in Courtroom E of the Hernando County Courthouse. Doyle was given a bond amount of $2,000 in accordance with the bond schedule.

Doyle was given citation# A9ZZB9E and citation# A9ZZBAE (2018-23964), both for theft of a motor vehicle.

Information was received from Sheriff’s Office dispatch that a black female, later identified as Maria Feliciano, the defendant, had entered multiple vehicles stating that she has a gun in her back pocket.

WASHINGTON, CHRISTINA JEANETTE YOB: 1996 CHARGES: CHILD NEGLECT Arrested at: 08/03/2018 03:43 BOXWOOD ST, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34602 Arrest Summary: On 8/3/2018, at approximately 0235 hours, I was dispatched to Boxwood St., in reference to allegations of Child Neglect.

Christina Washington, the defendant, left her one year old daughter, and her 3 year old son home alone without any adult care or supervision between the hours of 0130 hours to 0300 hours on 8/3/2018.

Initial contact on scene was made with Jacqueline, who advised she arrived at the residence, located on Boxwood St to check on the well-being of the children after discovering the defendant in Bushnell, FL with her (Jacqueline’s) husband at his place of work. Jacqueline advised she arrived at the address and began knocking on the front door to see if an adult was present with the children. Jacqueline heard the children crying inside, and due to the exigent circumstances, used the key the defendant left in her car and opened the home to find the children home alone.

Contact was made with the victim inside the residence, who on initial contact advised that the defendant, her husband Ricky Hicks: “beat me up good this time.” The victim advised she returned home from work around 18:00 hours and shortly after, she advised the defendant she was headed to bed. The victim stated while in her bedroom, the defendant began yelling at her through the bedroom door. The victim advised upon opening her bedroom door and telling the defendant that she would contact Law Enforcement if he continued to cause a disturbance, the defendant placed his silver handgun against her forehead and told her: “I will shoot and kill you if I see blue lights.”

The defendant advised this placed her in fear for her life and she decided she would attempt to flee the residence, due to his actions being against her will.

The victim advised the defendant walked back towards the kitchen counter when she fled for the front door. The victim stated the defendant ran and caught her by the front door and drug her by her hair out through the front door, throwing her to the ground.

The victim advised at this time, the defendant began striking her with a closed fist and attempted to put dirt into her mouth. The victim advised these actions were unwanted and against the victim’s will.

Writer observed injuries on the victims face consistent with her statement and further observed dirt and yard debris in the victim’s hair. Writer took photographs of the defendant and the front yard where a light had been knocked over from the altercation.

Writer located on the living room couch an empty blue in color pouch that the victim advised the defendant carries his gun in. Writer located, on a bar stool by the kitchen counter, a silver Smith and Wesson revolver which was fully loaded.

The defendant arrived on scene after law enforcement arrival, at approximately 0300 hours. The defendant advised she had been on the phone with her boyfriend (Jacqueline’s husband) and he came and picked her up and brought her to his work.

The defendant was asked if she left anyone in charge of the children while she was away. The defendant advised, “No, but I wasn’t gone for very long.” When advised that her children were one and three years of age and not capable of caring for themselves the defendant responded, “They were sleeping.”

Writer re-established contact with the defendant. The defendant was arrested and read his Miranda rights via agency issued Miranda card.

Writer asked defendant about putting his silver Smith and Wesson revolver against the victims head, at which time the defendant advised he did not wish to speak with writer.

The defendant was found to have actively and willfully failed to provide proper care and supervision for her children and was arrested on two counts of Child Neglect; each count carries a bond amount of $2000.00, for a total bond amount of $4000.00. The defendant was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center without incident.

Writer checked the Hernando County Clerk of Court records and observed that on 01/03/2018 the defendant was adjudicated Guilty for battery against the victim as well.

The defendant was given the felony court date of 8/31/2018 in Courtroom E, at 0830 hours.

LOWERS, BRANDON SCOTT YOB: 1986 CHARGES: DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE Arrested at: 08/04/2018 12:51 CORTEZ BLVD & TWIN DOLPHIN DR, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34609 Arrest Summary: On 08/03/2018, Law enforcement was dispatched to the area of Cortez Boulevard and Twin dolphin Road located in Hernando County FL, in reference to a single vehicle accident. Upon law enforcement arrival contact was made with the witness, Sergeant D.M. with Florida Highway Patrol, who advised he had seen the defendant (Brandon Lowers) run the red light at the intersection of sunshine grove road and Cortez Boulevard and proceeded to traveled east bound on Twin Dolphin Drive at a high rate of speed. Sergeant D. Middlers then further observed the same vehicle to be crashed on the south shoulder of Cortez Boulevard with the defendant in the driver’s seat, as the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Contact was also made with the second witness Joshua Lutz. Joshua advised while driving west on SR50 he observed a white vehicle smoking and upright that just

wrecked. Josh advised he then pulled over and got out of his truck then proceeded to the defendant’s vehicle to assist with helping the defendant exit the vehicle.

I arrived on scene to conduct the traffic crash investigation.

While speaking to the defendant, I detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. While talking to the defendant I also noted slurred speech, as well as the defendant to become very excited, by large outbursts of laughter, the Defendant also had bloodshot and watery eyes.

Upon talking to the defendant again he advised he was coming from Tidal brewery, and was just trying to get home, and that he went off the road and crashed, which also matched the witnesses statements. I also observed the defendant to sway while standing still.

Upon completing the traffic crash investigation, I advised the defendant that I was now conducting a DUI investigation.

I then asked him to submit to Field Sobriety Exercises in which he refused to comply. At this time The defendant then uttered I’m wasted and can’t say my alphabet backwards or count to “7”, the defendant then refused to perform Field sobriety exercises because of being, “too drunk.”

I then advised the defendant I would have to make a decision based off the observations I already have observed he then replied, “Just take me to jail.”

The defendant was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Hernando County Jail. During transport the defendant advised he seen getting arrested coming, due to him driving under the influence approximately 3-4 times a week. Once arrived at the Hernando County Jail he provided two breath samples which showed his breath alcohol content to be .148 and .146 after the twenty minute observational period. While in the breath test room the defendant admitted post Miranda to have been driving, having 4-5 beers at the Tidal Brewery and further stated, “I’m f***** up, and if the machine doesn’t read it, it’s broken” followed by a large outburst of laughter.

The defendant then stated, “I’m going to guess I’m a 1.2.

County considers ‘bang for their buck’ in reducing Weeki Wachee Springshed Nitrogen levels

Hernando County Utilities Director Gordon Onderdonk asked Board of County Commissioners on July 24, 2018 for approval to withdraw current funding applications for proposed septic-to-sewer conversions. The current applications total approximately $50-million, co-funded with Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), however also required a $4200 portion funded by each respective property owner, or other county funding. The board approved unanimously.

Onderdonk reviewed data showing that 30% of nitrogen introduced into the Weeki Wachee spring comes directly from septic systems.

Part of the Basin Management Action Plan (BMAP) includes a twenty year plan to reduce the amount of nitrogen, which is measured in poundsper-year (lb-N/yr). The initial reduction goal is 58,560 lb-N/yr within the first five years, and 195,200 lb-N/yr total within 20 years.

One state-funded application will remain in place; the decommissioning of the Spring Hill Wastewater Facility will bring the county very close to its fiveyear goal, by eliminating an estimated 46,171 lb-N/yr. “Bang for the buck, it’s like four times better than to do the septic-to-sewer conversion,” Onderdonk said.

At the BOCC workshop on June 5, 2018, the Board expressed a consensus not to pursue the additional funding by instituting an Municipal Service Benefit Unit (MSBU) on homeowners. Onderdonk expressed optimism that the decommissioning of the wastewater facility, in addition to other funding applications, including a $10,000,000 application for Airport Water Reclamation Facility Expansion will have the same effect on

nitrogen reduction.

The expected timeframe for the decommissioning of the Spring Hill wastewater facility is five years.

The BMAP area consists of 200,474 acres located in southern Hernando County, including a portion of the City of Brooksville, and northern Pasco County. The BMAP area contains the Weeki Wachee Spring Group which is composed of a single, large main spring and numerous smaller springs spread over an area of nearly five square miles.

Weeki Wachee Spring is the primary source of the Weeki Wachee River and the largest spring in the group. The BMAP area also contains Magnolia-Aripeka Springs Group; Mud Spring, Salt Spring, Wilderness Spring and Jenkins Creek Spring.

Residents should be aware that July 1, 2018 signaled the enactment of new regulations on septic systems within “Priority Focus Areas” of “Outstanding Springs.” In correspondence from The Florida Department of Health, which is the permitting authority for “On Site Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems” (aka septic tanks), the new regulations are outlined.

“DEP is mandated by statute to develop the OSTDS remediation plans by July 1, 2018.

Under these plans, an area resident applying for a new construction permit in the PFAs on lots with a size of less than one acre has the following options: • connect to available sewers or, • install a conventional non-nitrogen-reducing OSTDS if the utility has identified the property as being within a BMAP-listed septic-to-sewer project or, • install a nitrogen-reducing OSTDS such as, “In-ground, passive nitrogen-reducing systems” that use additional

soil and media layers to reduce nitrogen flow into the aquifer, or nitrogenreducing Aerobic Treatment Units (ATUs) and Performance-Based Treatment Systems (PBTS)... ” To determine if your lot is within a Priority Focus Area (PFA) go to: https://floridadep.gov/ PFAmap.

The DOH letter continues: “New OSTDS permitted on July 1, 2018 or later, that will be constructed on lots less than one acre, located in a PFA, will be required to have a nitrogen-reducing OSTDS. Conditions that would invoke “New” OSTDS construction in Chapter 64E-6, Florida Administrative Code are: • Installation of a system where a system has never been installed.

• Installation of a system where the previous system was abandoned when use of the property was discontinued.

• Installation of a system when the previous DEP-regulated treatment facility is being decommissioned.

• Installation of a system to serve a house

addition rather than modifying the existing system.

• Installation of a system to serve an additional structure on the property.

• Installation of a complete system to replace a system where the existing structure is being expanded into the location of the existing system, or where the placement of a pool, outbuilding or other structure is impacting the location of the existing system.

• An increase in the existing domestic sewage flow of over 20% at a non-residential establishment.

• Any increase in commercial sewage flow (e.g., restaurant, nail salon, commercial laundromat).”

DOH explains that the owners of existing septic systems are encouraged to get an upgrade, but will not be required until “indicated in DEP’s remediation plan and the system is in need of repair or modification.”

Grant programs are underway for homeowners in order to replace existing systems.

The letter states, “DEP will administer the grant program to help homeowners cover the difference in costs for upgrading their existing septic system to enhanced nitrogen treatment systems to nutrient impacts to springs.”

HCSO Alert: Deputy injured in traffic stop On 08-07-18 at approximately 3:27 p.m., Deputy Tonya Shutt conducted a Traffic Stop on a silver GMC Sierra pickup truck at McKethan Road, near Rowntree Drive, for various traffic violations, including violation of right of way, reckless driving, speeding, and failure to obey a traffic control device.

As Deputy Shutt approached the driver’s side of the GMC, she recognized the driver, Melissa Elaine Lloyd, from previous law enforcement contacts. Deputy Shutt had knowledge that Lloyd’s Florida driver’s license was suspended and that Lloyd knew of the suspension.

Deputy Shutt advised Lloyd to step out of the vehicle as she was going to be placed under arrest for driving on a suspended license. Lloyd ignored the lawful command. As Deputy Shutt attempted to open the driver’s door, she observed that the exterior door handle was broken off.

Deputy Shutt then reached into the vehicle, through the open driver’s

With the deputy’s right arm inside the vehicle, Lloyd put the vehicle in drive and began to accelerate, driving off with Deputy Shutt’s arm still inside the vehicle. Deputy Shutt continued to give verbal commands for Lloyd to stop, which were ignored. Deputy Shutt fell off the side of the truck, landing in the roadway where she sustained minor injuries to her leg.

Lloyd fled south toward Pasco County.

As this was happening, a retired law enforcement officer (Kentucky and Tennessee) of 17 years was passing by. He observed the traffic stop and the fact that the deputy’s arm was inside the truck. After he passed, the gentleman observed in his rearview mirror, the driver flee from the scene, dragging the deputy. He then saw the deputy fall off and the driver accelerate even faster.

The driver of the GMC then

passed the witness on the right, in the grass - leaving the area at a high rate of speed. She continued to drive in a reckless manner, passing numerous vehicles.

The witness called 9-1-1, advising Pasco County operators of the events that were unfolding. Eventually, the suspect driver pulled into the parking lot of PK’s Discount Beverage and Cigarettes located at 38141 Trilby Road in Pasco County.

The witness provided this information to Pasco County operators and Melissa Lloyd was taken into custody by a Pasco County deputy.

Inside the GMC, Pasco deputies located marijuana and methamphetamine. Lloyd, who was on Felony Probation, was charged accordingly by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Shutt was treated at Bayfront Health Brooksville for her injuries. She is recovering at home and has been referred to a specialist.

Lloyd remains in jail in Pasco County.

The HSCD was recently awarded a $40,000 grant from FDACS (Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services) for a new nutrition-rich program in Hernando Schools. The program will bring products straight from the farms in Hernando County, to our schools.

The Food and Nutrition staff is working hard at expanding current partnerships and establishing new relationships with local farmers to bring as many locally placed fruits and vegetables to students.

The district’s agriculture plan also includes produce from school gardens so the students have an opportunity to learn about the goodness in eating and growing fresh fruits

many of our nation’s native plants and wildlife were in danger of becoming extinct.

The gopher tortoise thrives in longleaf pine, oak sand hill habitats as well as pastures, prairies, scrub and coastal grasslands. The gopher tortoise is given its name because of the 10 to 40 foot underground tunnel they dig called a burrow.

These burrows can retain a consistent temperature and humidity levels year-round which provides protection during the Florida’s summer heat, droughts and fire.

These burrows provide refuge for over 300 animal species that include the eastern indigo snake (eastern indigo snake was listed as a threatened species in 1978), pine snake, gopher frog, burrowing owl and many other species.

On July 19, 2018 Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee (FWC) held a Local Government Workshop in Land O’ Lakes.

The workshop was to provide resource and incentive information for local governments and private landowners as well as to encourage participation of conservation actions that have been set forth by the Gopher Tortoise Management Plan which increases or improves existing habitat for the species.

“I always had a special concern with gopher tortoises,” said Alex Kalfin Local Government Coordinator for the Gopher Tortoise Conservation Program. “I gained an appreciation for them not only through my personal experiences but also through learning about them at a young age- that they were an important keystone species and so many other species rely on them for their survival.”

A keystone species helps define an entire ecosystem and without them, the ecosystem would be dramatically different or cease to exist altogether.

velopment not only in Hernando County but the entire state of Florida, wildlife may seem to get pushed aside and that is why there are organizations, such as FWC, to ensure the protection of both wildlife and the Florida ecosystems.

“Any form of development that impacts a gopher tortoise burrow within 25 feet or anything that causes soil disturbance, which includes mining, requires that the person or entity conducting activity needs to apply for a gopher tortoise relocation permit. Through that permit, since 2007, all gopher tortoises that are in the path of development or that will be impacted are required by state law to be relocated,” Kalfin said.

For all gopher tortoise relocation permits, the obligation is on the Applicant/ developer/property owner to apply for the proper permits in accordance with Florida Statute and Florida Administrative Code.

Withlacoochee River in ‘Action Stage’

While the Withlacoochee River is many feet away from what the area experienced following Hurricane Irma last year, early this week the county urged residents to pay attention to the rising waters of the Withlacoochee River. The Hernando County Emergency Operations center advised, “The Withlacoochee River has been steadily rising in association with heavy rainfall over the past several weeks. Currently, the river is in action stage at both the Croom and Trilby gauge locations.

Additional rainfall over the next few days may have an impact on the potential for minor flooding; however, the total amount that the river will rise remains somewhat uncertain.

It is imperative that residents living near the river stay informed of current conditions and be prepared to act to

protect personal property.”

Director of Safe Schools Selected BROOKSVILLE – Starting August 13th, Jill Renihan will be the Director of Safe Schools for the Hernando County School District. Renihan brings over 25 years of experience in both school leadership and mental health educational services to this new position. The position is one component of Senate Bill #7026 that was signed into law as part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act passed this Spring.

“This position brings a unique opportunity. Not only will we satisfy the spirit of the law, but we can empower principals and give them ownership over school safety. Southwest Florida feels the burn of red tide

Although, it is normal for red tide to be found off Florida’s southwest coast, the intensity, size and duration of the current bloom is notable. Red tide effects on humans

by ROCCO MAGLIO is usually burning eyes, a dry cough, and difficulty breathing.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission reports that red tide was responsible for killing fish found in Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, Collier and Monroe counties. Some of the species of fish being killed are assorted baitfish, grouper, trout, eel, snook, and tarpon.

In addition to a large fish kill, the red tide has also killed dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, and even a whale shark which washed up on Sanibel Island. This week a manatee injured by exposure to red tide was rescued and taken to SeaWorld Orlando for rehabilitation.

This year’s red tide algae bloom effects have been reported as far north as Pinellas, although high red tide algae counts are currently only being reported as far north as the Manatee/Sarasota border.

The FWC reports that current bloom has been observed since November. This is not the first time there has been an intense red tide according to Tracy Fanara, a staff scientist and program manager at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota, from 2004 to 2006 there was an 18 month red tide bloom.

We moved often when I was young.

It was so common then for companies to transfer employees frequently.

When we said goodbye to one house in Santa Rosa, California, and hello to another in San Francisco, it didn’t seem out of the ordinary to be on the move.

While Taino is able to ply his trade around the state and abroad, wrestling up in Alabama as well as the prestigious WWC in Puerto Rico, he keeps coming back to BrawlUSA due to his connections to owner James Legend.

That relationship is fraying though, as shown through Taino’s actions throughout the night. After commentator Josh Johnson was “awarded” the first ever BrawlUSA social media championship by Director of Fun Pastor Wayne Cordova, Taino confronted the men about being ignored.

“I have been screwed over by the company and management, so it’s time for me to take my place and stop waiting in line, I’m going to take what I want,” Taino said.

Taino’s victory in a fatal-four-way was controversial due to Pastor Cordova being accidentally hit by Sam C, allowing Taino to take advantage of the distraction to get a roll up for the pinfall.

We then got to see the first ever women’s match between Katalina Perez of the Dynasty and Aspyn Rose. These two women put on an exceptional bout, with Perez coming

Teaching our next generation

Toby Benoit is a best selling novelist and professional outdoorsman with thirty-five years of experience guiding and outfitting for big game all across America. Toby is a renowned archer and turkey hunting expert who manufactures custom game calls and is a regular judge at NWTF sanctioned turkey calling events across the Southeast.

I recently exchanged emails with an old friend, Mister HR Ross of the Ross Hammock Ranch, coincidentally, the best hunting ranch I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. We covered a few topics, but one in particularly sobering to both of us, is the decline in hunters. He cited a statistic he’d recently encountered that in the last five years (2013-2017) hunter numbers have fallen by 20 percent, a sure sign of an aging demographic. Is this the beginning of the end of our hunting heritage?

For years, I’ve read and written about the, “Take a kid hunting” movement and I’m a huge advocate of that. But, introducing children to the outdoors, although a wonderful thing, surely isn’t all that we can do. It’s my opinion that we need to invite the millennials to join us. No, not the

tide pod eating, safe-space seeking, snowflakes. They only makeup an honestly small percentage, but the rest of them which technology and the internet has distracted from the natural beauty of the outdoors.

The millennial generation, also known as Generation Y are those born in the 1980s to the early 2000s. They currently total more than 80 million and are the largest group of Americans alive today, and also said to be the largest cohort or group in history. What’s downright disturbing, is that hunting participation remains relatively low within this massive population, only about 5 percent, according to a study published by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

There is hope, however, as we in the conservation business work to recruit the next generation of hunters, we must not forget about targeting food-conscious millennials who want to know where the steak they’re grilling originated. Many of these millennials didn’t grow up in a traditional hunting or fishing household or didn’t have the time to devote to hunting, but the idea of eating meat they harvested themselves now appeals to them. In fact, survey research shows that American hunters in the millennial age bracket most often name the meat as their most important reason for hunting, and that the percentage of those hunters who hunt mainly for the meat continues to grow.

doubled. In no small measure, this new interest in hunting can be tied to what I’ve read on the internet to be called the, “locavore” movement. These new hunters, from urban and suburban backgrounds, want their food to be locally sourced. They want it to be tied to the land, have more of a direct hand in acquiring it, and they want it to be free of chemicals and human-made hormones. In the case of meat, they also want the animals to be free ranging.

Even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg revealed his love for hunting, the outdoors and BBQs in a viral Facebook Live video from his own backyard. He said meat tastes, “doubly better when you’ve hunted the animal yourself.

Whether you’re fishing for salmon or going hunting

for a boar, that’s a big part of it. You feel more connected to what you’re doing and what you’re eating. You cook it yourself and it’s this whole new experience.”

That’s where we need to place our focus; not on taxidermy, antler scores, and the old hairy-chested, smell like leather, bwana image of manly ruggedness…. they’re simply not interested. But, if a diet of free-range, organic meats, self-procured and delicious is their desire, then why not invite them along and teach them what they need to know?

Springstead High School just narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season in Class 6A after finishing the season with seven wins.

In past years, the Eagles would’ve been a qualifier for postseason play based on being the runner-up squad in the district.

Because Springstead finished in second place behind Mitchell in Class 6A, District 6, the Eagles fell just short. We asked Springstead coach Mike Garofano five burning questions heading into the season.

AV: You guys just missed out on the postseason last year because of the new FHSAA format. How much is it driving you guys this year to win the district?

MG: We’re definitely motivated that’s for sure.

I’m not a fan of the new system. You don’t know if you made the playoffs until the Sunday after the last week of the season.

It takes away some of the excitement of your in season district games if you’re not a district cham-

pion. We have to win the district to assure ourselves a spot so that’s our goal.

AV: With Sims and Fribley back, is this your best backfield you ve had yet?

MG: We have a lot of weapons in the backfield this year in addition to Sims who was almost a 1,000 yard rusher in 8 games last year, we have Junior returning started Anthony Alexis and four guys that can run fullback for us without missing a beat. Damian Giles, Toby Rahman, Adrian Cabrera, and Albert Rodriguez.

This is probably the deepest backfield we’ve had since I’ve been here.

One of the potential up and coming teams in Hernando County resides out of Weeki Wachee under the watch of Jacob Gray, who was formerly a special

teams coordinator at the legendary Jacksonville Bolles program. Gray is tasked with turning around the Hornets and he’s already got the program heading in the right direction, especially with returning a couple of studs in quarterback Victor Sykora and running

back Sebastian Class. We asked Gray a few burning questions heading into their first preseason game.

AV: What are the goals and expectations you’ve set upon this squad?

JG: When our best 11 are lined up with anyone else’s best 11 on this schedule, we should have a shot. The expectation is to have the first winning team in school history and the goals are to compete for a district title.

How much better did he get during the summer?

Billy Dean is a Grammy winning country artist. He started his career winning Best Male Vocalist on Star Search hosted by Ed McMahon in 1988. In 2017, Billy Dean was inducted into the Florida Artist Hall of Fame.

Billy is filming music videos locally. He is filming videos in the area because he has friends here (Wilton Simpson, the Bellamy Brothers, among others) and Hernando has picturesque farms. We ran into him at Operation Backpack at the Towne Square Mall. He was there with Wilton Simpson helping to provide the students with school supplies. Billy Dean spent decades in Nashville before moving back to Florida. He returned to Quincy, Florida near Tallahassee where he was born.

HOPE for Kids ALS Camp returns to Florida in September Non-profit supports the children and young adults who have family members affected by ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) with free weekend CAMP.

Children and young adults who have or have had family members battling ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), are invited, at no charge, to attend Camp HLC in September at Circle F Dude Ranch in Lake Wales, Florida.

Hope Loves Company (HLC) is a 501 (c)3 non-profit dedicated to supporting children and young adults who have family members living with ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It is the only non-profit with this specific mission. Jodi O’Donnell-Ames, President and Founder of Hope Loves Company, and her team have hosted seventeen Camp HLCs across the nation.

Camp HLC will take place September 14 – 16, 2018 at Circle F Dude Ranch in Lake Wales, Florida. The camp program is free to 40 plus children and grandchildren of families affected by ALS in the area and beyond. It is a sleepover weekend retreat.

Mrs. O’Donnell-Ames has three children – now all young adults – who have lost a parent to ALS before turning 12, so she knew from personal experience how ALS affects a family, especially children.

Camp HLC offers many fun experiences – including archery, fishing, and improvisational acting instruction. Even more

important, children and young adults in attendance will all have something in common and can build new friendships and feel less alone in their challenges.

According to one ten year old camper, Camp HLC “helps you get the hard times out and the good times in.” A mother of four campers shared that it was “so wonderful to rub shoulders with such caring people and feel that warm, safe embrace of empathetic people” at Camp HLC Indiana, which took place in June.

Call for Art & Art Opening “On, In and By the Water”

On August 11, 2018 the UPTOWN Gallery would be honored to have you submit 3-5 pieces of your artwork depicting WATER. Fun pieces, serious pieces, or your favorite type of work. You may have created a fun cartoon or a serious portrait or you may love Landscapes.

You may be an impressionist or pour your colors onto the canvas.

But, it has to have water as the subject matter.

Examples: Swimming, Sailing, Boating, a Landscape, River, Stream, Waterfall, Ocean, Lake or simply a water faucet dripping water.

The artwork must be submitted on August 11, 2018, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Be creative and have fun.

All mediums are welcome, including 3-D art if you have any. We do have new display cases to lock smaller items up in (for security).

All artwork should be gallery ready to hang, with a wire securely attach to the back of the work. A card should be attached to the back or bottom of your work with your name, the medium you used, and the price you want for your work.

This exciting new exhibit “On, In & By the Water” will be on display August 13, thru October 6, 2018 at the Uptown Art Gallery located in City Hall. We will be holding an opening reception on August 17, 2018 from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. to honor the artists and poets showcasing their works.

The Nature Coast Art League will be displaying their artwork and wonderful photography from the Spring Hill Camera Club. We also have pottery, sculpture, jewelry and woodworking in our display cases.

The artists will be expressing themselves with stunning, diverse and surprising compositions all depicting views of how we enjoy being near the water. With fluffed up feathers, slicked back combs and wattles, Pixie’s Poultry & Pigs have a lot to crow about.

From professional tennis coach and European premier league football referee to local high school soccer coach and a successful poultry and pig breeder, Jonathan Stone leads a very busy and interesting life.

Jonathan, who hails from England, has a history of chicken breeding. He previously ran a show chicken company in the 90s in Kent, England so when he came to the US in 2011, he decided to make raising show birds his life’s calling and began breeding Silkies, originally in Tennessee.

“But the winters in Tennessee can be really cold, so I decided to move to Florida,” said Jonathan. “And that’s where I met Courtney, my wife, a native Floridian and lifelong animal lover,” he smiled.

Together the couple run Pixie’s Poultry & Pigs LLC located in Brooksville — Pixie being Jonathan’s fond name for Courtney.

Since first meeting, the couple has worked hard to grow their Silkies breeding program — a chicken known for its easygoing temperament and unique look. Silkies come in various colors and have silky feathers, pompom crests and beautiful full tails.

“Show Silkies are particularly beautiful when they have been washed and blown dry,” said Jonathan. “They probably get washed more than I do,” he said jokingly.

“In simple terms, breeding poultry and pigs to pedigree standard is to refine all the required characteristics present in our stock, so that it conforms as closely as possible to breeding society standards,” said Jonathan.

He explained, “we do this by selectively breeding the purest birds from our stock and using them for future breeding some don’t breed to close.”

Now the couple has expanded their farm to include Ameraucanas — a snowy white Call Duck, the female of which can be incredibly noisy, and Berkshire Cross pigs.

Creative lunchbox recipe: Macaroni Muffins Hello readers, it’s been awhile, but Julie’s Child is back for yet another delicious recipe. Since kids are going back to school, here is a special recipe that is a treat for any lunchbox. This week I will be describing to you how to make macaroni muffins. I apologize for the slight delay in sharing my recipe, I have been a tab bit busy lately.

Ingredients 3 cups macaroni 4 eggs 1 1\2 cheese 1\2 cup parsley 1 tbsp italian seasonings Cooking spray 2 muffin pans (may not use all cups) Pinch of salt 2 hot dogs (chopped) Directions Cook macaroni till al dente and then drain macaroni out of pan.

Cook and cut hot dogs. After that, put macaroni in another dish with the eggs, cheese, parsley, Italian seasoning, salt, and hot dogs.

Stir till mixture is incorporated. Spray muffin pans with cooking spray and then dish mixture into muffin pans. Cook for 10 - 15 min. Let the muffins cool, then take out of pan and enjoy!!! There is always something bakin’ in Julie’s Childs kitchen.

12th Annual Stuff the Bus fills local classrooms Community Donates Thousands of pounds in School Supplies to United Way’s Annual Drive

Spring Hill, FL – During the weekend of Friday, July 13th – Sunday, July 14th, United Way staff, school teachers, volunteers, and community members came together for Hernando’s 12th Annual Stuff the Bus. There were 807 hours logged by volunteers, this year- over 100 more hours than last year.

The volunteers helped by collecting school supply donations at all Publix and Walmart locations in Hernando County.

This education initiative brought in over 7,410 lbs of school supplies which stocked over 164 classrooms in 24 schools.

Update

On 08-07-18 at approximately 8:50 a.m., Hernando County deputies responded to 5187 Alliance Avenue in Spring Hill regarding a person shot.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a white male (the victim), who was originally at 5187 Alliance Avenue, went to a neighbor’s house requesting assistance. The male was reportedly “screaming in pain and bloody.” The neighbor called 9-1-1 to summon help from law enforcement and fire rescue.

The victim (identity not available yet) alleges that the incident occurred between 2 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. on this date.

The victim was transported to a local trauma center by Hernando County Fire Rescue with injuries that are considered non-life-threatening.

Deputies and a K-9 team checked the residence at 5187 Alliance Avenue to ensure that no suspect(s) and/or other victims were inside. No other persons were located inside or in the immediate area.

The investigation is still very fluid and active at this time. Additional information will be provided when it becomes available.

Detectives have classified the event as a Home Invasion.

The victim has been identified as Joseph Fairweather W/M DOB/07-17-1984, the resident at 5187 Alliance Avenue.

Fairweather is recovering at a local trauma center.

Again, his injuries are considered non-life-threatening and a full recovery is expected.

The investigation is still active.

SWFWMD donates shoes to Moton Elementary Three hundred and twenty three pairs to be exact.

Southwest Florida Water Management District Employee Committee completes a couple of community outreach projects per year. This year, one project was the “Starting Off on the Right Foot Sneaker Challenge” where employees donated sneakers for students during a three week collection period. The 646 pairs of shoes collected were split between two schools where more than 74 percent of the students come from low-income families- one was Moton Elementary in Brooksville and the other was Gocio Elementary in Sarasota.

“A lot of our staff are born and raised in Brooksville and we wanted to do something for the children in need. These kids are the next scientists. They are the next generation to protect our water resources,” said Michele Sager, Communications Chair of the SWFWMD Employee Committee.

The children waited patiently for the minivan full of sneakers to arrive.

When the van pulled up, they helped to unload all of the shoes which were brought to picnic tables in boxes sorted by size. Then it was time for the students to pick their new footwear.

No more worn out soles, holes and frayed shoelaces for these kids. Girls chose sneakers with sparkling designs and boys found athletic shoes and even light up sneakers complete with a USB charger.

Mom Sandra said, “This is a blessing for our family.” She has two children ages 8 and 10.

Student Aiden said the

last time he received new shoes was “a long time ago.”

After the kids found their new shoes, the only natural thing to do was to try them out with an extemporaneous race down the sidewalk.

Later that day, Principal Gaustad went over to Rookies Bar and Grill to pick up school supplies that the restaurant collected for Moton over an eight week time frame. The amount of One tiny student carries a big box of shoes donated by SWFWMD to the picnic tables. supplies collected, filled a school bus to an extent.

“We know a few of the school teachers from Moton,” said Billy Beetz Owner Operator.

Local businesses also helped out, including Discount Garage Door and Lucas Magazine.

“It was great team effort with contributions from our customers, staff, local business owners including Discount Garage Door, Lucus Magazine, and Rookie’s,” said Beetz. Rookie’s donated 10% of their sales Volunteers and students help unload the donated shoes. Out with the old (right), in with the new (left). on Saturday, July 28th to Moton Elementary.

Accuform, a local manufacturer of signs, is providing new signs to Moton. Advance Auto Parts is dropping off school supplies.

The community has really come out to support Moton Elementary. This support will help to inspire and motivate the teachers and students of Moton Elementary for the 2018-2019 school year.

Carolyn R. McCoy, 87 Carolyn R. McCoy, 87 of Lake City, Florida died July 15, 2018. She was born January 4, 1931 in Bauxite, Arkansas to parents Edward and Ruth Ricketts.

Carolyn graduated from Bauxite High School with Honors and from Hendrix College, Conway, Arkansas as an organ major and, she earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Florida State University.

Carolyn had been a resident of Florida for forty-four years and had lived in Gainesville for the past twenty-five years.

Carolyn is survived by a son Steven McCoy in Lake City, daughter Susan Christie of Gainesville, her sister Dorothy Chandler Sarasota, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her devotion to family and social work, Carolyn worked tirelessly in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s, marching with Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma Alabama.

Live Oak Theatre wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Carol and Frank Morsani of Brooksville for their unwavering encouragement and support during Live Oak Theatre’s initial capital campaign to acquire the Hernando County Utilities Department building which is now temporarily referred to as the Live Oak Center for the Arts.

At their request Mr. & Mrs. Morsani were referred to as “our anonymous benefactors” during the initial capital campaign. Now that the campaign is concluded, the couple has given permission to reveal their names. Mr. & Mrs. Morsani made an initial donation of $100,000 to kick start the campaign and then awarded an additional matching grant of $100,000 after the theatre group successfully raised $100,000 on their own.

Live Oak Theatre to Hold Orientation and How To Audition Class Live Oak Theatre company announces that it will conduct an orientation to Live Oak Theatre and “How to Audition” program. The program consists of two, one and a half hour classes held from 6:30 to 8 pm on August 14 and August 16. The orientation program will be held at its new Center for the Performing Arts, located at 21030 Cortez Boulevard, Brooksville, FL 34601.

Completion of this program is a requirement to audition for children, young adults, and parents of children who wish to audition for Live Oak Theatre. Children who attended LOT summer camps do not need to attend orientation.

Kids used to imitate parents, now parents act like kids In these modern times there are many new electronic devices introduced almost daily. The pace of change has shifted into fast gear on all levels of our culture. This change happened so rapidly, that it seemed like it was allowing little time to evaluate the consequences of these devices.

They have altered the way we interact with others. Presently we have the ability to communicate with people directly in any part of the world. Parents and their children are no longer involved in intimate exchanges where parents can instill necessary skills, attitudes and moral lessons of our culture and civil society.

Both are interacting mostly with their “friends” and not enough with each other. The adults and children’s differences are melting into each other. Our traditional moral values of following the Ten Commandments in the family and community have been swept away replaced by selfish ones.

Accumulating and spending wealth has superseded doing what is right to others to create a wholesome environment.

Exploiting of others to increase advantages by conniving, openly lying or cheating has become common.

As President Jack Kennedy stated during his 1961 inauguration speech, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” Our current motto should be “what our country and others can do for me is all that counts.” These immature and shortsighted ideals are similar to a spoiled child who does not understand the longrange consequences of receiving everything they want without earning it. Too many young adults are shunning their responsibilities to becoming independent. Older adults are regressing to be like teenagers again. The benefits of maturing into an adult are not being demonstrated or taught.

This leaves both children and adults confused about their roles in particular stages of the life cycle.

The youth culture has become the ideal for many Americans.

Parents and even grandparents are doing everything to appear and act younger. Seen from the back the age of females cannot be distinguished by their dress.

These days both the teenagers and older females have little difference in their styles. The child wants to look older and sexier while the supposed adult wants to appear younger and sexier. Young girls go through serious cosmetic surgery to transform their breasts and faces while the older person’s facial and body operations are done to appear more youthful.

Males are no different. Young teenage boys pump iron to build up their bodies to appear older while the older men wear their sports caps backwards, a trend started in prison by young punks, to appear “cool.” The casual dress of both is often indistinguishable along with their hairstyles. The desire for adults to appear youthful is blurring the visual difference of the aging process.

One of the most important changes that have taken place is our reverence for youth and rejection of the wisdom of elders. This drastic distortion of the natural process of maturing in order to be productive and successful is being forgotten.

Adults have forgotten that superficial pleasure seeking; impulsive behavior has to be replaced by establishing a more disciplined lifestyle to meet longrange goals. The important stages of the life cycle are being rejected, as many adults are not willing to grow up. Wisdom has lost its value.

Every day a happy day

For years I marked the end of each day with an X on my calendar. Then for years I didn’t mark it at all, and I sometimes got confused about what day it was. Later I used a diagonal line, from bottom left corner to top right, and sometimes top left corner to bottom right, and then I switched back to Xs during my three years in Germany. Oh, I had a lot fun there, but it wasn’t home. Plus, they are very similar to us— not exotic at all—and they are a lot cleaner, which really annoyed me.

I also had a calendar in my office, a three-year calendar of months that I made, thirty-six squares on typing paper that I drew with ruler and two sizes of markers, and I stuck it to the wall with thumbtacks. On the 15th of the month I drew a diagonal line, and on the COB of the last day of the month I made it an X, both with some ceremony.

I still have that; it’s in my scrapbook because a lot

people asked if they could draw a line, and after doing do so they added their initials. They, too, were annoyed.

Back in the States, I alternated between Xs and diagonal slashes, but I began to wonder why I was so intent on crossing off the days. What was I counting down to? While being stuck overseas is one thing, but for the rest of my life? I decided I no longer wanted to X the days. For a long time I ignored the calendar, and of course I was occasionally confused.

Then I started working at Exwork. I decided that despite my smart phone, which with a touch of a button I could see the date, I still wanted a physical means of tracking time. So I started Xing

This lack of mature role modeling is negatively affecting the natural passing of the baton from one generation to another. Furthermore, it is lowering the standards and expectations of all our institutions since there are very few elders acting like adults. Many older citizens do not want to be seen as cranky, negative people by sharing their knowledge gained through experience.

Instead many shortsighted adults are sharing the motto, “You only live once.” This means taking all the pleasure you can

regardless of the long-term negative consequences for establishing a positive future. Adult role models should point out that living only in the present is a selfdestructive strategy Living for today and taking advantage of everybody else is a death sentence for a healthy society. When there are few elders willing to guide and direct our society towards a positive outcome then the nation is on a disastrous course.

There’s something too final about it, like the eyes of dead cartoon characters, and now that I think about it, it’s how many teachers marked wrong answers on my grade school papers.

So I went to my local office store and bought a green bingo dauber. For three weeks I used it, but it was messy and looked too stark with rows of big green dots. I went back and asked for a happy face stamp. They only had one, an odd red version for preschool, a none-copyright version I guess. But I bought it, and I use it, and I like it.

All last year, and so far this year, I make every day a happy face on my calendar.

not by burying one’s head in phony youthful excuses and unjustified arrogance.

Adults need to be leaders again. Guiding our youth with wisdom, which will probably not win any favor with them but eventually will be followed as young people see its worth is a wonderful legacy.

Being labeled as an old fuddy-duddy in the short run is not attractive but eventually will win the appreciation and respect of reasonable people the adult has touched.

We know that atheist and agnostics have been around since the beginning. There is always someone in the crowd who will disagree about the existence of God and sadly this view seems to be growing. I admit that our freewill and independent thinking are beneficial components to establishing what we believe but it never ceases to amaze me that we would argue over the reality of a divine creator. I can understand different worldviews about science, social issues, politics, and even some religious differences, but the subject of whether or not there is a God troubles me deeply. I have also noticed an increased animosity from those who do not believe in the Bible toward those who do. As a Christian minister, I’ve had my share of attacks from individuals who declare I am insane for accepting the God of the Bible as a legitimate source of spiritual truth. My columns are a regular target and in my experiences, non-believers do not usually exhibit their disagreements with civility but instead choose to unleash their perspectives with aggressive hostility. It is Christ within us that can sense their internal misery and this causes us to have compassion as we hope that somehow their eyes will be opened before it’s too late. However, at the same time, we must admit that it’s also tempting to argue and fight back against those who are intentionally trying to insult us. So, what is the right way to handle these offensive and slanderous personal attacks? Jesus Christ as the greatest role model of grace and humility in the history of the world, demonstrated that meekness is not weakness but strength under control.

There are many men and women who have faced incredible persecution and we can admire how they also embraced the attitude of Jesus in their life.

Jackie Robinson is one of those individuals. He was a sports megastar known as the first African American to break the color barrier as a major league baseball player. He won rookie of the year in 1947 and went on to become a baseball legend.

There is not enough room on this page to describe his talents and abilities but what I want to emphasize is the type of person he was. It’s difficult to imagine everything Jackie Robinson endured when he stepped into the spotlight of a world that was filled with prejudice. The horrific name-calling, the nasty and hate-filled insults and people spitting on him were all intended to hurt him and cause him to quit. But instead of railing against them with bitterness and hostility, he displayed a remarkable presence of grace and integrity. An important part of this story that is often not mentioned is that Mr. Robinson and Branch Rickey the man who signed him with the Brooklyn Dodgers were both devout Christians. It was no secret this was a huge step toward desegregating the sports world and they were also fully aware of what a strong resistance they were going to face. Their strategy was to maintain self-control and refuse to retaliate no matter how fierce the persecution. This mindset would eventually become the standard for the civil rights movement and by the way this historic moment in time was also 17 years before the civil rights act of 1964.

Christina Gray and her son Bart have been operating Global Jetcare for nearly 10 years. About a year ago they expanded into a new building at the Brooksville-Tampa Bay Airport and this year they added two Learjets to their fleet. Now they have a total of five jets: 1 Learjet 35 and 4 Learjet 36.

“We’ve been everywhere in the world except for Antarctica,” said Christina Gray. They fly about 400 flights per year and a flight can range between 2 and 40 hours. Global Jetcare has 32 employees consisting of nurses, paramedics, pilots and mechanics. They also have 5 part time doctors on staff. Each flight has a flight nurse, paramedic, a doctor if needed and two pilots.

Christina Gray recently toured the Arc Nature Coast Neff Lake campus with her Kiwanis group. After that tour, she made a donation to The Arc Nature Coast along with a 60” TV for one of their classrooms.

She also arranged for The Arc Nature Coast clients to come out to the Global Jetcare facility and tour the

Nurse Marcy showed them how the heart monitor works. Anyone who wished, was hooked up to the monitor to see their own heart beat. A reading was printed out so they could take it home to show their family.

Marcy, Flight Paramedic George and Pilot Mark shared stories with The Arc clients about some of their travels. Marcy recounted a trip to Bolivia to transport a girl that was bitten by an alligator while swimming.

Her wounds got infected, but she’s fine now.

George recalled a flight to the Ukraine to pickup a teen who fell on a train track.

They took him to Boston for treatment and the trip was 34 hours.

Mark said he enjoys flying a particular client that

regularly needs to travel from New York to Florida for her treatment. He said she can’t move very well so it’s their job to make sure she is okay. She travels with her husband and their golden retriever. Mark said, “I love dogs. It’s pretty unusual to take a dog on the plane. I really enjoy that.”

St.Leo’s First Provost Elected University’s 10th President

ST. LEO, FL – Jeffrey D. Senese officially was elected as president of Saint Leo University on July 26 by the Board of Trustees. Senese is the university’s 10th president. He has served as the acting president of the university since the retirement of William J. Lennox Jr. on April 30.

Previously, Senese was the university’s first provost and senior vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, and provided oversight of all educational programs offered at the main campus, at its 35 education centers, and online.

“Although Jeff was named as acting president just three months ago, his leadership and forward thinking made it clear to the Board of Trustees that we could not find a better fit for our next president,” said Mary O’ Keefe, board chair. “He has spearheaded the reorganization of senior leadership, created plans for campus expansion and transformed the new strategic plan into an action plan that will lead Saint Leo University into the next stage of growth nationally and internationally.”

Prior to coming to Saint Leo University Senese served as provost and vice president of Academic Affairs at Cardinal Stritch University, one of the nation’s largest Franciscan universities, in Milwaukee, WI, with about 4,000 students overall.

He has held similar academic positions throughout his career, including the following: vice provost, vice president of academic affairs, and professor at Johnson & Wales University (Providence, RI); vice president of academic affairs, dean of faculty, and professor
