For a long time Flamingos have been considered exotic in Florida. This had real world consequences since many of Florida former roadside attractions have become part of the Florida State Parks. The Florida State Parks are only allowed to have native animals to Florida.

The requirement for the state parks to only display native animals led to the Governor declaring the hippopotamus (Lucifer “Lue”) at the Homosassa Springs State Park as a

Hernando County commissioners approved sending the comprehensive plan amendment for Spring Center to state agencies for review on April 10, 2018. The county received the last of the responses from those agencies on June 22. The proposed Spring Center Planned Development District (PDD) is located on a 450 acre parcel of property in Spring Hill, just south of Northcliffe Blvd, with Greynolds Avenue to the east, Dunkirk Road to the south, and River Road to the west. The development is to include up to 3000 residential units, up to 750,000 square feet of commercial space, 250,000 square feet of office space and up to 100,000 square feet of government/institutional space. There is also to be a community park, expansion of Explorer K-8 and a Hernando County Utilities Department wellfield.

None of the agencies had objections to the comprehensive plan amendment, but several came back with comments.

While the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) had a comment related to a technicality. “...we have identified one comment related to approval of development-of-regional-impact sized developments and have included a recommendation regarding measures that can be taken to address the comment. The comment will not form the basis of an objection to the amendment after adoption...”

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) remarked : “While, facilities of state importance are almost two (2) miles away from the site, there may be increased future project traffic volumes at certain intersections such as US 19 & Northcliff Boulevard and SR 50 & Deltona Boulevard impacting those intersections...”

Their comment was in reference to the amendment not “expressly” approving the Spring Center Planned Development District (PDD) as required by statute. They recommended the county modify policy 1.07(2) of the proposed Future Land Use Element to explicitly state approval for the Spring Center PDD. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission provided comment and advisory information on the Florida Black Bear situation near the proposed development, west of the Suncoast Parkway.

FWC advised, “FWC has received 39 reports of human-bear conflicts within roughly a 5-mile radius of the project site since 1983. Florida black bears are abundant in this area, which is within the Big Bend Bear Management Unit identified in the 2012 Bear Management Plan.

Please review the attached document for important information related to potential measures that can be taken to avoid or minimize negative wildlife interactions during the planning, construction, and operation phases of this project.”

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) had a few comments. First they pointed out that the map amendment does not include a statutorily required analyses for potable water availability and included resources for additional information on how to remedy this.

SWFWMD listed information for residents on water conservation measures and commended the applicants for including language for reducing the nutrient load in the Weeki Wachee Spring Shed.

They also commented on some small flood prone areas on the property and stated that the implemen-

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and The Office of lntergovernmental Programs of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection both reviewed the comprehensive plan amendment and gave little comment.

The county commission may now either adopt, adopt with changes or not adopt the proposed amendment in a second public hearing. If the second public hearing is not held within 180 days, then the amendment will be deemed withdrawn (unless it is extended by agreement).

Bayport Pier reconstruction begins with archaeological assessment Submitted by Hernando County Government (Brooksville, FL) At the Tuesday, July 10, 2018 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) awarded Midcoast Construction Enterprises, LLC out of Largo, FL the contract to complete the reconstruction of the Bayport Pier in the amount of $657,060.50.

The reconstruction of the pier will begin after an archaeological assessment is completed in coordination with the Division of Historical Resources to comply with permitting requirements. A previously recorded shipwreck is located within the vicinity of the pier and two additional overlapping archaeological sites are also recorded in the project area. The goal of the assessment is to test and evaluate the sites,

and ultimately protect the integrity of the sites during the pier’s reconstruction. If there are federal permits, land or funding involved in the project, it may be subject to compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Cardno, a global environmental firm that is overseeing the entire project, was issued a

notice to proceed with the work on July 9, 2018, and has 90 days to obtain a permit for the underwater study, to complete the archaeological assessment and submit the final report.

Once completed, the pier’s reconstruction plan and timeline will be established.

The total cost of the Bayport Pier reconstruction will be

$828,339.70: • $28,880 = Damage Assessment by Cardno (completed) • $65,291.20 = Engineering and Construction Oversight by Cardno (ongoing) • $77,108 = Archaeological Assessment by Cardno (ongoing) • $657,060.50 = Construction of Pier by Midcoast Construction Enterprises (approved)

Court to move forward with ‘Jane Doe’ issue in gun case

TALLAHASSEE --- A federal appeals court Monday cleared the way for considering a dispute about whether two teens can remain anonymous in a challenge to a new Florida law that raised the minimum age to buy rifles and other long guns.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a two-page document that said it “appears that this court has jurisdiction to consider this appeal,” though it said a final determination on that jurisdiction will be made later by a panel of judges who will hear the anonymity issue.

The appeal stems from a ruling in May by U.S. District Judge Mark Walker that a 19-year-old Alachua County woman, identified as “Jane Doe,” could not remain anonymous as a plaintiff in a National Rifle Association challenge to the gun law.

The NRA also sought to add to the case a 19-year-old man, identified as “John Doe,” who could be affected by the law.

After Walker’s ruling, the NRA went to the Atlanta-based appeals court seeking to allow the teens to remain anonymous. The appeals court, however, raised a question about whether it should consider the anonymity matter and said that if “it is determined that this court is

without jurisdiction, this appeal will be dismissed.”

The NRA contended the appeals court has jurisdiction over the anonymity issue. Also, Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office, which has objected to the teens remaining anonymous, agreed that the appeals court could take up the dispute.

The anonymity issue is rooted in a federal lawsuit that the NRA filed March 9 after Gov. Rick Scott signed into law a sweeping school-safety measure that included new gun-related restrictions.

CREWS, RICKY DANIEL Jr YOB: 1991 CHARGES: AGG ASSAULT Arrested at: 07/13/2018 21:49, 1090 EDGEHILL AVE, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 7/13/2018 at approximately 2055 hours, I responded to a weapons disturbance at the residence located at 1090 Edgehill Avenue, Spring Hill, Florida and made contact with the defendant, Ricky Daniel Crews Jr. I observed the defendant walking down the front yard steps of the residence with his arms raised with a desert tan and black handgun, in a holster, located on the front portion of the defendant’s belt.

then pointed the handgun at his chest and stated, “Get out now”. Domenic did advise that he was in fear for his life.

I reviewed a video recording on a witness’s cell phone of the incident and observed the defendant to have the same handgun in question, in his hands, at a low ready.

I observed the defendant arguing with Domenic as Domenic was speaking with the 9-1-1 dispatcher via cell phone. It should be known the video was recorded after the defendant allegedly pointed the firearm at Domenic. There were three witnesses to the incident and their sworn written statements were submitted.

I then placed the defendant under arrest and transported him to the Hernando County Jail without incident. The defendant was given a court date of 8/13/2018 at 1315 hours, at the Hernando County Courthouse in Courtroom D. The defendant was given a bond of $2,000.00.

The weapons were secured and the defendant was temporarily detained in the back of my patrol vehicle.

I then made contact with the victim, Domenic Frank Luci, who stated that he lives at this residence and when he came back to the residence, after leaving earlier, the defendant was standing in the doorway with a firearm in his waistband. Domenic advised that he came back to the residence to retrieve a few of his things when the defendant attempted to prevent him from entering the residence by intimidation.

Domenic stated that he then went inside the residence to retrieve a backpack and that was when the defendant stepped back, removed the handgun from his holster,

JERICHO, JACOB BRIAN YOB: 1990 CHARGES: THREATENING LEO, ASSAULT ON LEO/ OTH OFFICER SIMPLE Arrested at: 07/06/2018 14:44, 2005 BROAD ST, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34604 Arrest Summary: On July 14, 2018 this writer along with several other Deputies of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 24293 Malvern Street, in reference to Jacob Jericho threatening suicide by cop.

Jacob was later taken in to protective custody and was transported to Springbrook Hospital under the Baker Act by Deputy O. Loydgren.

Due to Jacob’s aggressive behavior I followed Deputy L. to Springbrook for her safety.

Upon our arrival Deputy L. advised me that Jacob was making statements that he would not exit the vehicle once they arrived and would head butt anyone who tried to remove him. Deputy L. then opened her patrol vehicle door and told Jacob to exit the vehicle. Jacob hesitated for a bit and then slowly exited the back seat.

Jacob looked at me while I was standing at the door and began to taunt me by stating, “Oh, it’s mister tough mother f*****” and stated, “Next time I’m gonna shoot you and make you kill me.”

I did not respond to Jacob and continued to escort him into the facility.

Once in the facility Jacob began state, “What do I got to do to get you to take me to jail?” Jacob stated, “If I buck up to you will you take me?” I continued to stand

by Jacob a keep a hold of Jacob’s right arm with my left hand due to him continually tensing up and making violent statements. Jacob remained in cuffs during this time.

Deputy L. then exited the admission hallway to complete the Baker Act paperwork, during which time another patient then exited their room at the nurses request and sat in a chair in the hall way. Jacob then looked at me and stated, “Hold on to everything you

love dear, cause when I see you again I’m gonna shoot you and make you kill me”, he then smiled.

The patient commented, “You want suicide by cop?

You’re a b****.” Jacob then became extremely agitated and began to yell and cuss at the patient. Jacob began to yell, “He kills niggers all day cause he wears green.

F*** HIM”.

In an attempt to stop Jacob’s communication with the other patient until nursing staff could put her into her room I then faced Jacob towards the door frame of the office away from the other patient and told him to stop yelling. Jacob then began to tense up and lock his arms down. I then told Jacob several times not to tense up at which time he tensed up tighter.

Jacob then began to get closer to my person and was within several inches of me. Jacob was still handcuffed and began to yell, “WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT BIIII! WHAT MOTHER F*****!” Jacob then pulled his head back and in a swift and forceful manner lunged it at my face. In fear that Jacob was going to strike me in the face with his forehead I then raised my right hand and caught his chin with an open palm.

I did not strike Jacob; however, I did prevented him from striking me by placing the palm of my hand along the front of his chin at the bottom of his lower lip stopping the head butt.

I then escorted Jacob to the ground and placed him on his stomach until further directed by nursing staff where to take him. Nursing staff advised that they remember him from the last time he was Baker Acted and had to take him down during that time as well.

While walking Jacob to his room he then told me several times, “I’m coming after you when I’m released from here and I have a bullet waiting for you.” Jacob continuously repeated, “I’m coming for you when I’m released and I have a bullet for you. You better kiss your loved ones goodbye cause when I’m released I’m coming for you.”

Aggravated Assault on a Pregnant Person

SAPP, MARTY RAY YOB: 1992 CHARGES: AGG/ ASSAULT/BATTERY PREGNANT PERSON, FALSE IMPRISONMENT, TAMPER/HARASS WITNESS-VICTIM Arrested at: 07/14/2018 22:28, TARRYTOWN DR, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 7/14/2018, at approximately 2135 hours, I responded to the residence at Tarrytown Drive and made contact with the victim in reference to a verbal disturbance call. As I approached the front door of the residence, I overheard the defendant yelling very aggressively at victim, but was unable to observe the defendant committing any battery on the victim. After interviewing the victim and the defendant, it was confirmed that the voices I overheard were them.

The victim stated that the defendant, Marty Ray Sapp, grabbed both of her wrists and pulled her, against her will and without

permission, back into the residence as she was trying to leave due to an argument. The victim also stated that the defendant had her against the wall and was “In her face”, screaming at her while physically preventing her from trying to get off of the wall. It should be known that the victim is the defendant’s girlfriend who is also nine month pregnant with the defendant’s child. I did not observe any physical injuries on the victim.

The victim advised that she wanted to call 9-1-1 but the defendant prevented her from doing so by taking her cell phone, keeping the cell phone in his jean pocket and taking her car keys to prevent the victim from leaving the residence.

It should be known that I recovered the victim’s cell phone and car keys from the defendant’s front pockets of his pants. The victim ultimately had to have two of the defendant’s family members call 9-1-1 to receive help.

Two family members of the defendant were witnesses to the incident and corroborated the victim’s statement. Sworn statements were completed and submitted.

The defendant was then placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident. The defendant was given a court of 8/13/2018 at 1315 hours at the Hernando County Courthouse in Courtroom D. The defendant was given no bond due to the offense being domestic in nature.

Joseph was reminded he could not go to Karma Spirit & Cafe again due to being trespassed from the property.

Joseph had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person.

Joseph had slurred speech, glassy eyes, was stumbling and was aggressive towards law enforcement.

Joseph was given a court date of 08/10/18 in Courtroom C at 0900 hours.

Joseph is being held on a $1,000.00 bond.

“Man, you need to get out of my house.”

“Go ahead and arrest me.”

BURGESS, JOSEPH ALBERT YOB: 1981 CHARGES: TRESPASS OTHER THAN STRUCTURE OR CONVEYANCE Arrested at: 07/15/2018 02:36, 10511 SPRING HILL DR, SPRING HILL, FL, 34608 Arrest Summary: On 07/15/18 I responded to Karma Spirit & Cafe in reference to a trespass.

Upon arrival I made contact with Deputy J. M., who advised that a Joseph Burgess, the defendant, was asked to leave Karma and the property by the owner, Rob Starz, for causing a disturbance inside the bar.

Joseph walked outside and stood by the entrance and would not leave. Deputy J. M. advised Joseph to leave or he would be subjected to being arrested. Joseph continued to argue with Deputy J. M., and Deputy J. M. asked for a backup unit due to Joseph becoming aggressive. Upon making contact with Joseph, who was still on the property, in my presence, I asked Joseph to leave the premise or he would be subjected to being arrested. Joseph stated, “Who the f*** are you go ahead and arrest me.” I asked Joseph to leave to premise and he stated, “I don’t need to leave I’m a tax paying citizen.”

Joseph was taken into custody and transported to Hernando County Jail.

STRAUSBACH, JUSTEN DAVID YOB: 1983 CHARGES: BURGLARY DWELLING Arrested at: 07/16/2018 05:22, 8036 JAYSON DR, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34613 Arrest Summary: On 7/16/18 at 0501 hours, I was dispatched to the residence of Alfred Weeks at 8036 Jayson Drive.

Upon arrival I observed a white male with no shirt exit the front door of the residence and fall on the front porch. The subject was later identified as Justen Strausbach, who provided his name.

At that time Mr. Weeks advised that he heard the defendant yelling in his backyard about “his children dying and Jesus”. Mr. Weeks stated he was getting ready to leave for work when he walked outside he saw the defendant on the side of his residence trying to get into his locked side door. Mr. Weeks told the defendant “get out of my yard”, the defendant yelled at him “this ain’t your f****** yard”. Mr. Weeks then called 911.

Just after Mr. Weeks called 911 and disconnected, the defendant went onto Mr. Weeks front porch and opened the front door and made entry into the residence at 8036 Jayson Drive.

Mr. Weeks did not give permission for the defendant to go into the residence.

Mr. Weeks went into the residence and found the defendant sitting in his reclining chair. He told the defendant at that time, “man you need to get out of my house”.

The defendant jumped up at Mr. Weeks and put his finger into Mr. Week’s chest and continually pushed his chest over and over with his finger while yelling “this ain’t your house”.

Mr. Weeks stated “I did not want him touching me and I was in fear for my life, I didn’t know what this guy was going to do to me or my family sleeping in the other room”.

At that time deputies arrived on scene.

Based on the aforementioned information, probable cause did exist for the arrest of the defendant for Burglary of a Dwelling with Battery, $25,000.00 Bond.

The defendant was issued a Felony court date of 08/13/2018 at 1315 hours in Courtroom D.

HCSO Alert: Arrests made in Powell Middle School Burglary

JULY 16, 2018- During the early morning hours of 07-07-2018, a Commercial Burglary occurred at Powell Middle School, located at 4100 Barclay Avenue in Spring Hill. During the burglary, a total of 19 laptop computers, which had a value of $9500, were stolen from various classrooms. On the same morning just hours after the burglary, citizens traveling along the Suncoast Parkway bike trail located 14 of the stolen laptops along the wood line of the trail. Patrol deputies and Forensics specialists responded to the school and began the burglary investigation.

District Two detectives assigned to the investigation retrieved surveillance video from the school. The video indicated that there

MORGAN, STEVEN ANTHONY YOB: 1980 CHARGES: POSS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSESSION DRUG PARAPHERNALIA Arrested at: 07/16/2018 00:55, CALIFORNIA ST & FRUITVILLE ST, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34604 Arrest Summary: On 07-162018 at 0038 hours, while on routine proactive patrol in the area of Tangerine Estates, I observed a white male riding a bike on California Street near the intersection of Fruitville Street. Upon approaching the defendant, who I later identified as being Steven Morgan, I observed him to be pulling a small make shift trailer which had a large flat screen TV tied to it.

At that time, I had a reasonable suspicion that the subject had committed, was committing, or was about to commit a crime due to him carrying around what appeared to be a newer large screen TV during very early hours in what can be considered a high crime area, therefore, a Terry Stop was conducted on the subject at the area of California Street and Fruitville Street.

Upon making contact with the defendant, I asked him what he was doing riding around with a large flat screen TV, to which he replied, “I found it.” Upon asking the defendant where he found it, he advised that he wasn’t sure, but somewhere near the Suncoast Parkway.

While speaking with the defendant, I observed that he appeared very nervous in which his hands were visibly shaking and he was talking in a very fast manner. The defendant also continued to place his hand in his left pocket, at which time I asked him if he was in possession of any weapons, to which he replied, “I don’t really know, maybe a knife.” I then informed the defendant that I was going to pat him down in order to only verify that he was not armed with any weapons, however, he immediately began walking away from me, stating that he really didn’t want me to.

I again informed the subject that I was only verifying that he was not armed with any weapons under the “Stop and Frisk Law,” at which time he turned around and stuck his hands up.

Upon attempting to pat the subject down, I made contact with the outside of his front left pocket, causing the defendant to immediately reach down and grab my hand. Due to the defendant doing so, I then took control of his left arm, leaning his body forward. While doing so I was able to visibly look into the defendant’s front left pocket, at which time I observed a small clear plastic zip lock bag that contained a white crystal like substance inside. It should be noted the small plastic bag was sitting at the very top of the defendant’s pocket, leaving it in plain view. Based on my training and experience, I recognized the crystal like substance as being Methamphetamine. The defendant was then detained and placed in my patrol car.

The crystal like substance was then field tested utilizing Narco Test Kit #7623, which yielded a positive result for Methamphetamine.

The baggie containing the crystal substance weighed a total amount of 0.9 grams.

The item was weighed on an OHAUS scale model C305-P with a serial number of 23392 at the jail.

The defendant was taken into custody and transported to the Hernando County jail without incident. The defendant was charged with 1 count of Possession of Methamphetamine and 1 count of Possession of Paraphernalia. The defendant was issued a total bond amount of $3,000.00 and given a court date of 08-1318 at 1315 hours, in room D of the Hernando County Courthouse.

Brooksville City Council appoints Brent Young to seat 5

The City Council’s first order of business on July 16, 2018 was to appoint a new council member for seat 5, left vacant by Natalie Kahler’s resignation in order to run for county commissioner.

The council voted 4-0 to appoint Brooksville resident and former employee of the Hernando County Planning Department, Brent Young. Prior to the meeting, the council received one other letter from John Basarab, a Brooksville business owner. Since only two candidates were to be considered, a three-minute presentation from each and question and answer

session was held by the members of the City Council before the voting began.

John Basarab, a former technology teacher at Nature Coast Technical High School fell in love with Brooksville after moving from Seattle ten years ago.

“I like knowing my mailman,” Basarab said, before he spoke about educating himself on issues that he might vote on that evening.

Brent Young, a lifelong Hernando County resident, formerly worked with the Hernando County planning department, as well as several other county departments due to demands for his skills in creating GIS (Geographic Information Systems) maps.

Young spoke about several instances where his skills

saved money, and added, “That’s what I’m good at … saving people money.”

Young is currently employed with a company owned by Pike Engineering. Council Member Joe Bernardini reminded Young that if he were chosen for Seat 5, that he would be unable to be employed by the City of Brooksville for one year after his appointment ends.

Young assured Bernardini and the council that this was not of concern, as he has no plans to leave his current employer.

Young’s wife is the current City and Finance Manager for Bushnell in Sumter County. Young credits his wife with the inspiration to run for the city council seat.

The council members remarked that both were high-quality candidates.

Young was given the Oath of Office and sworn in by Judge Kurt Hitzemann.

Later in the meeting, council recognized Natalie Kahler for her service to the city.

Council Member Joe Bernardini remarked that it was an “honor and a privilege” to read the resolution that recognized Natalie Kahler’s three years serving the city of Brooksville.

Kahler began her tenure as a city council member in 2014, and Mayor during 2015-2016. She recently resigned her city council seat to run for County Commission District 4.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a man suffered a “possible gator bite” after he entered the water at a Florida park.

The Orlando Sentinel reports the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the possible attack Thursday night. The man’s name has not been released.

Orange County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Ashley Gipson says the man was retrieving something from the water at Barnett Park in Orlando when he was injured. Snap! Alligator tempted by frog captured in Indiana pond PLYMOUTH, Ind. (AP) — An alligator that was hanging out in a northern Indiana retention pond has been captured after being lured to shore with a frog.

Brandon Crawford of Goshen tells WSBT-TV that he and a friend captured the reptile about 3 a.m. Wednesday and turned it over to police in Plymouth, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of South Bend. Crawford says he’s from Texas, where gator hunting isn’t unusual.

WNDU-TV reports the alligator is 2-3 feet (0.60.9 meters) long, and may have been a pet. The reptiles are usually found in the wild in southeastern states and can grow to 13 feet (4 meters).

Tim Tebow to be inducted into Florida’s ring of honor GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Two-time national champion and 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow will be inducted into Florida’s ring of honor, becoming the sixth player to receive the honor.

The school announced Wednesday that Tebow will be recognized during the LSU-Florida game on Oct. 6. His name will be unveiled on a wall inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The display will now feature Tebow and the other five members of the program’s ring of honor: linebacker Wilber Marshall, running back Emmitt Smith, 1966 Heisman winner and famed coach Steve Spurrier, 1996 Heisman winner Danny Wuerffel and defensive end Jack Youngblood.

Tebow went 35-6 in four seasons (2006-09) at Florida, finishing with a Southeastern Conference-record 170.8 career pass efficiency rating. He left college with 28 school records, 14 conference marks and five NCAA records.

Sonny Vergara retires as Hernando County Fine Art Council Chair Emilio “Sonny” Vergara officially retired from the Hernando County Fine Arts Council Thursday, July 12, 2018. A gifted professional photographer, Sonny was appointed to the Council February 25, 2014, and served as chair since December 2014. Through his passion for the arts, his success at recruiting Council members, and his clear goal of making Hernando County a vibrant art hub, he has made a lasting impact on the Council and on the arts in Hernando County. Open House for HCSO District One office in city of Brooksville The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office would like to invite the public to an Open House at its new District One office (formerly the Brooksville Police Department) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 26.

HCSO Alert: Tree trimming Scam Sheriff Al Nienhuis is warning residents of a tree-trimming scam plaguing Hernando County.

Detectives have recently received reports regarding persons being hired to preform treetrimming who are not completing the work once they have been paid.

Once paid in full for

the job, the individuals perform little to no work and then offer an excuse to leave. They never return to complete the work.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear the story of William H. Cox II, “BILLY THE KID.” He recounts his adventure of 30 years ago when he experienced a life-changing event that found him literally living in the footsteps of the legendary figure of the wild wild West, William H. Bonney, known infamously as “Billy the Kid.” Billy has written an autobiography about his life and adventures ent Aitled: “The Adventures & Times of William H. Cox II, Billy the Kid.” Thirty years ago, Billy took a road trip to Roswell, New Mexico to learn about the land and history of that place after seeing the movie “Young Guns.”

Little did he know he was headed for an experience that would change his personal history and had everybody in the SouthWest saying that New Mexico’s notorious son was back.

As Billy recounts, he was twenty two years old and full of energy. Arriving in Roswell, New Mexico, he stepped off the bus, not knowing where to go. He just went with the direction of the wind. It led him to the Roswell Museum. As he walked into the museum, the historian immediately approached him and said he looked just like “Billy the Kid.” “What is your name?” asked the historian. “Billy,” he replied.

The museum historian’s mouth dropped! “We need to get you to Lincoln,” he said, which was about sixty miles from Roswell.

So began his adventure as “Billy the Kid” in Lincoln, New Mexico. Billy the Kid had returned in the person of William H. Cox II, who bore an uncanny likeness to the Kid. Let the Kid tell you the rest of the story in person where he will make his book available and answer questions.

As I’m writing this article, I have a couple of wild hog backstraps in the slow cooker ready for pulled pork barbecue tonight. Mandi Mohr, the 2017-2018 Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High Valedictorian is also a talented soccer player.

During the 2017-2018 season, she racked up 39 goals, 75 shots on goal, 22 assists. She scored an average of 1.7 goals per game and took about 4.7 shots per game. She scored 54% of the total number of Bishop McLaughlin’s goals.

Her outstanding performance in the classroom and on the soccer field earned her a spot on the United Soccer Coaches’ 2017-2018 Scholar All-American Soccer Team for boys and girls. Eighty-three students nationwide received the honor: 28 boys and 55 girls. Of them, Mohr is the only student from Florida.

already teaming up with Harris to receive training from the tailback that made stops with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars.

One of the most recent prep players to workout with Harris is Central running RJ Harrington, who will be heading into his senior season with the Bears. Harrington rushed for 122 yards on 23 carries for Central last season and figures to see a lot more time in the backfield for the Bears after a few graduations among other backs.

In 38 games played in the NFL, Harris has rushed for 590 yards on 145 carries and scored two touchdowns. He’s currently a free agent and could be picked up sometime during training camp or during the NFL 2018 campaign. Harris’ best season the NFL was

in 2012 when he was with the Packers and rushed for 157 yards on 34 carries and had a solid 4.6 yards per carry average.

He scored both of his touchdowns that season as well.

Harris, who in 2006 rushed for 363 yards in a game for the Bears, has been very active throughout the Brooksville community and has visited Central High School several times to speak with players, students and teachers. He had his uniform number retired at halftime of Central’s homecoming game against Lecanto last season.

Not everyone likes to talk about taxes before tax time, but if you wait until January 2019, all of your information will be historical and it will be too late to make changes. One of the most effective ways to reduce your current tax bill is by planning.

That’s why we recommend midyear and yearend tax planning in July and October which will allow opportunities to make adjustments before the end of the year.

Life Changes: If you have any life changes this year such as retiring, marriage, divorce, change jobs, sale of your business, and increase in your pay, baby or child going starting college, it is wise to evaluate the impact that will have on your taxes. The change can affect your filing status, income tax bracket, deductions or tax credits, all of which will change your bottom line tax due.

Capital Gains & Medicare Premiums: How are your taxable investment accounts doing this year? You may have realized capital gains which will change your tax due for the current year but also may impact your Medicare premiums for 2019.

Your Medicare premiums are determined from your modified adjusted gross income as reported on your tax return 2 years ago. So you pay the standard premium amount and an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) is an example, if you are single and your adjusted gross income (AGI) exceeds $85,000, your Medicare premiums will increase from $134.00 to $187.50, per month. If your income has gone down, there are possible exclusions to the monthly increase.

So, make sure to consider planning and possible tax loss harvesting to offset the gains before December 31st not only for the current year but for the future Medicare premium costs as well.

The tomato, pronounced tom-MAY-to in America; in English-speaking Europe tomMAH-to.

Whatever your speech or culinary predilection, we all love freshly grown tomatoes. The tomato is the common denominator from street vendor to upscale restaurant; sliced and sprinkled with a little salt and presented with a few basil leaves.

Worldwide, there are more than 3,000 varieties of tomatoes in active cultivation and more than 15,000 known varieties, according to Wikipedia.

Based on shape and size, they include beefsteak, plum and pear, cherry, grape, Campari and a host more. Behind potatoes, lettuce and onions, tomatoes are the fourth most popular fruit.

Beefsteak tomatoes are large and are great sliced in burgers and sandwiches.

Plum and pear tomatoes have lower water content and generally saved for canning or for sauces. Cherry and grape are tiny and round and sweet and Campari tomatoes have lower acidity and good for those of us with sensitive digestion.

But many of us prefer the flavor of those old-fashioned tomatoes that have been grown and their seeds passed down from generation to generation. Called heirloom tomatoes, their seeds saved and carefully dried each year to cherish next season.

Heirlooms offer exceptional flavor and unique qualities. To be called an heirloom variety, it must be reproduced by seed, cultivated for more than 50 years and have its own folklore history.

Heirlooms are enjoying a rebirth in popularity and have some very unusual names and shapes, depending where you are in the nation. Known for their singular taste, shape, and color, some heirloom names include purple, orange, and yellow, in addition to the common red tomatoes. Recently a group of scientists, Tony Pernas, a botanist for the Big Cypress National Preserve, Zoo Miami’s Steve Whitfield and Frank Ridgely, Audubon Florida’s Pete Frezza and Jerry Lorenz, biologists Anne Mauro and Judd Patterson, set about to reexamine the whether Flamingos were native to Florida after seeing flocks in the wild.

They published their results in the American Ornithological Society’s journal ‘The Condor.’

Their conclusion was that flamingos are most likely native to Florida.

There were significant

historical sightings of flamingos. There are reports of large flocks which ranged into the hundreds and even thousands. These flocks were decimated by plume hunters. By the mid 1900s there were few to none wild flamingo sightings. During that time Audubon Florida’s lead biologist ruled that there was no evidence that the flamingos had nested here despite the historical accounts.

Longtime musicians Lucy Basta and Jack Waldron have produced a CD entitled “Railroads We Have Known” as a fundraiser for the Hernando Historical Museum Assoc. in Brooksville. Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to the museum association. Frank and Lucy have been performing around the county for many years. Both remark that making music makes them happy. One particular song on the CD is about the ghost town of Centralia (1910 - 1922) which was built up around the sawmill.

Normal abnormalities in palm trees

Palm trees are without a doubt one of the most popular landscape plants used in Florida. After all, what is a Florida garden without a palm tree? The famous Carl Linnaeus, The Father of Modern Taxonomy, regarded palms as “Princes in The Landscape.”

Here in Hernando County, UF/IFAS Extension Hernando County Master Gardeners receive many questions on palms. One common question we get in plant clinics is “Why are roots coming out of my palm tree?” “Is this normal?” The answer is yes.

Palms are monocotyledons that have an adventitious root system. The roots evolve primarily from the stem tissue, as opposed to a larger root system. In seedlings, palm roots emerge in an area of the base called the root initiation zone. As the palm seed grows, the root initiation zone extends upward and outward. Roots that are exposed to soil or any other moist environment, continue to grow outward and downward in the soil where they function as roots. Roots that arise above the root initiation zone and are exposed to a drier environment, cease growing. If the environment becomes moist, then the roots will resume growing. The root initiation zone usually arises no more than 6 to 12 inches up the palm. However, certain palm species such as date palms (Phoenix spp.), the root initiation zone can occur several feet up the trunk. Examples of palms that demonstrate this condition are Canary Island Date Palms, Pygmy

Date Palms, Sylvester Palms, Wild Date Palms, Cabbage Palms and Washingtonia Palms. We usually see this condition after the palm has been established. This condition is a normal abnormality, meaning that this will not harm the palm at all.

If you see this is on your palm, then do not worry. Do not try to cut the exposed roots off or pile dirt around the roots.

This also does not mean your palm was planted too high. Do not be tempted to dig up the palm and plant

it deeper within the soil.

This may lead to a more serious problem. Another normal abnormality is trunk flare. This is most always seen along with the root initiation zone.

Palm roots extend upward causing the bark to flare up, sometimes peeling off the trunk. Again, this is a normal part of the palms development.

As we walk we notice that there is over a mile of covered walkways, called Esplanades, to enjoy. These were designed by Wright in 1940 to connect in a geometric pattern the buildings on this west campus. The Esplanades are trimmed near the top in copper, taking on a patina to the appearance against the ivory colored block. They are pretty to walk under and certainly provided some welcome shade on this warm afternoon.

center to later a student lounge. At one end of the building is a theater-inthe-round, the only one designed by Wright. It is presently being restored.

Our final stop is the Three Seminar Buildings.

They were done in 1941 using student labor. These three buildings are now connected by walkways and make use of Wright’s trademark skylights, colored glass insets, and “textile” block system. The tour ends near the Water Dome and it’s just a short walk back to the tourism center and our parking lot.

In all Frank Lloyd Wright envisioned 20 buildings for the college including a theater, music building and art studio.

When Wright died his protegee, Nils Schweizer, supervised construction of four additional buildings on campus as well as the Pearce Centennial Tower.

With his unique methods and materials Wright left his timeless imprint on the campus. That legacy is both a blessing and a challenge. Many of his

buildings and the walkway are now 60-70 years old.

They need constant repair and upkeep in special ways to stand the test of time and stay true to his architectural design.

We ended our afternoon with a drive around Lake Hollingsworth, just south of the college. The lake is a showpiece in Lakeland with a 2.8 mile walking path around it. Again I can remember delivering papers near daybreak (my mid 1990 year) and getting a beautiful view of the lake and the morning sun.

In cooler weather I’d like to walk all the way around it. Maybe another time this fall. We’ve stopped at Lake Hollingsworth and watched the ducks, herons, and other various waterbirds. There are a few benches but it’s good to bring a lawn chair. We’ve also stopped at Lake Morton and seen more shorebirds, ducks, wood storks, and the famous Lakeland swans. Hope you will take an afternoon to enjoy Lakeland.

Brooksville, FloridaFrancis Richard Swartz 86, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at the Regional Medical Center-Bayonet Point in Hudson, Florida following surgery.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years Georgia (Bowman) Swartz; sister Olive Carrano; his children who adored him; daughters Deborah Vazquez; Pamela Labarr (Jim); Mary Arnold (Dan) sons; Donald Swartz; Frank Swartz (Teresa); Anthony Bowman; several grandchildren; great grandchildren and extended family members.

He was born on March 14, 1932 in Binghamton, NY; the son of Bert and Faletha Swartz. He developed a strong work ethic by helping support his family as a child. He was a master carpenter by trade and built many quality homes in the triple cities including his own.

Mr. Swartz was retired from the Binghamton City School district. He also was a 20 year veteran having served with the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a long time member of the American Legion Post #186 Brooksville, Florida.

Mr. Swartz was an avid reader and loved to play BINGO! He had a kind, gentle nature that people wanted to be around. He had a special quality of making people feel better in his presence.

Accepting government handouts erodes dignity Government assistance was a stigma for the poor in the past.

People would go hungry rather than ask for help. Many immigrants in the early 1900s were against receiving any government assistance since it made them appear inferior to other citizens. Most wanted to prove their worth and prosper on their own. Their dignity was more important than receiving charity from other people or tax money.

They appreciated the economic opportunity of being a free American and did not want to remain on the bottom rung of the economy.

Today too many citizens have bought the false idea that government is god-like entity that bestowed gifts on his followers.

These people believed that they are entitled to these nanny state presents. They have no awareness or concern that there are negative attitude changes in the recipients that weakens their strength of character.

Once people get “something for nothing” by their parents, state or federal government they expect more things and appreciate them less. Anyone who gets sucked into being a parasite rather than a producer is going down a dangerous road. These takers become addicted to searching out any angle to get government handouts and lose their shame in playing the game of beating the system rather than maintaining their pride in order to continue a self reliant life style.

Just like the free Obama phones whetted the appetite for more freebees or other giveaway programs, these programs have escalated from food stamps (now SNAP, Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program), free gasoline, travel vouchers, free insurance, and rent assistance for people who meet the lenient criteria. As the program grows, the benefits decrease but the person is already trapped in the welfare safety net. As the system becomes top heavy with too many participants it becomes harder for government to justify robbing the taxpayers to finance these ever increasing programs. Those outof-control welfare programs result in federal bailouts or government bankruptcy.

Buying votes through government handouts increases the tendency for people to become more reliant on government. They tend to be less willing to work for what they want. Increasing dependency on the government automatically encourages growth of government and a significant decrease in the work ethic. As they become more entitled, people begin to take whatever they can get even if it means deception in order to qualify before others who really need it.

Individual dignity in obtaining something for nothing is sacrificed.

These citizens know they are using others hard earned assets to take care of their selfish wants. This behavior destroys a sense of self worth, while their addiction to government to provide their needs strengthens. The concern for being embarrassed by this despicable behavior vanishes as their appetite for government assistance becomes insatiable.

As government creeps into every aspect of a person’s life there is a corresponding loss of freedom. These welfare traps besides extinguishing freedom and self-initiative, divide the nation into productive and nonproductive citizens. As the productive citizens realize the welfare parasites are granted their tax money that approaches or even surpasses their hard earned income. Not too many years ago the big wigs of Exwork decided that customers needed a way to alert associates of their presence, so they installed a dingdong doorbell at the paint counter, which customers were to push when they needed help, and a buzzer button at the sports counter (I thought it should have been a large horn with a rubber bulb that goes honk when you squeeze it) and a clacker bell in fabrics that shoppers were to shake.

Fortunately not many customers used them, because they didn’t see the devices or the instructions taped next to them. But that’s not unusual. Smokers always walked right past the ‘No Smoking’ signs in the Garden patio with their lit cigarettes and cigars, and grillers often brought their propane tanks all the way inside to the register despite the large posters at the gate that said they should leave their empties there. People don’t notice such things, and I’m guilty of it too.

But now and then some attentive shopper would dingdong and buzz and clang until even other customers complained. (I suggested the buttons play a jingle, something short and musically related to the department, but management simply stared at me with open mouths and glazed eyes until I went away.) One day a guy at the sports counter went buzz buzz buzz, buzzzzz buzzzzz buzzzzz, buzz buzz buzz for ten minutes before someone showed up to help him. (He was pushing

The idea of such sounds is, of course, decades if not centuries and even millennia old. I can easily imagine bronze-age customers picking up a clay mallet and striking a cast bell to get the attention of the proprietor, who is in the back inscribing his inventory on clay tablets with a trimmed reed. Lately, in these modern times, the counter bell is nearly obsolete. Big stores do not have stock rooms three steps behind the counter. And unless the sounds are broadcast over the speaker, no one will know you’re there. It just doesn’t work when one person is scheduled to cover three departments.

You shoppers of discounts please be advised that getting mad at the lone associate does nothing. Even getting mad at the manager has seldom effect. Unless you’re willing to legally pursue grievances against the realm of stockholders, your best bet is to figure it out yourself or stand silent for however long it takes to get noticed by the right worker.

Hopefully a leader, a president and his congressional supporters arise who have sufficient courage to reverse the federal and state giveaway programs. When praying for rain, don’t forget your umbrella

I’ve heard the old saying that “life is not a bed of roses” for as long as I can remember. I understand what it’s trying to convey but I’ve also thought that it would not really be all that great to lay down on a bed of sharp thorns. Nevertheless, it’s safe to say our journey will have its ups and downs and unfortunately, most of us will experience our share of hard times.

Whether it’s a financial worry, a medical situation, family problems, a concern for the world, or just being discouraged from the relentless grind of our job, life can be tough.

However, in the midst of all that is going on, we can always turn to God who is filled with an endless source of strength, hope, and love. We can choose to embrace the encouraging truth that God cares about our problems and how He has the power and the solutions to give us the victory no matter the size of our mountain or how dark the night. “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” II Corinthians 9:8.

Yes, there are bumps in the road that can help us learn about faith and patience but whatever the crisis it was not God’s intention for us to dwell in a state of defeat. In spite of being surrounded by negative forces, we have been given the opportunity through Christ to abide in His presence where there is an abundance of joy, security, and peace. In John chapter ten and verse ten and eleven we find the words of Christ, “The thief comes not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: but I (Jesus) have come that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep.” Whatever the situation, He has promised that He wants to save you and bring you through your trials stronger and more confident than ever.

The concept of God supplying our needs is wonderful but there is also a very important component to receiving His abundant blessings and that is our responsibility to believe. If we do not have faith, it’s not only impossible to please Him but highly unlikely that His miracles can be activated into our life. In Jeremiah chapter 29, we see in verse 11 that we are always on His mind and He has planned very good things for us to enjoy. But continuing in the context, the next two verses mention for us to take the initiative to call upon Him, pray, and seek His presence with all of our heart which of course includes the element of trust and assurance.

I recall a story about a small farming community that had been experiencing a terrible drought. The crops were dying in the fields and everyone was very worried because this is how they made their living.

Jumping for Joy: The Double Dutch Club ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALICE MARY HERDEN When Vivian Kwarren began homeschooling her daughter Angela, (10) she became generally concerned about her social skills and that thought had brought her back to her hometown of Brooklyn in New York.

“I started thinking about me and when I grew up in New York. I used to jump Double Dutch everyday (coming) home from school. It used to be to a whole bunch of kids,” Kwarren said.

Beginning as a street game, Double Dutch was developed by David A. Walker, a New York City Police Community Affairs Detective and his partner Detective Ulysses Williams back in the early 1970’s. Double Dutch has transitioned from a New York children’s street game into an international competitive sport.

This was a popular game among 5th to 8th grade students. The game requires agility and strength for competitions, and with this newly formed group it goes beyond skills and encourages creativity, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Double Dutch has 3 players in which one player must calculate timed jumps between two jump ropes twirling in opposite directions.

The rope for Double Dutch is 12 to 14 feet in length and comes in a variety of materials, cloth and cable as well as beaded. Colors can be changed to match the team's spirit colors.

“I thought that I would do things with her and teach her how to do Double Dutch and when I take her to the public park she could get some of the kids to play with her,” Kwarren explained. “There were a

few people interested but the ones that showed any interest were the older crowd.”

Vivian has always been interested in starting a ministry and creating a Double Dutch jump rope club was a start. She began to seek out locations to start her club and approached the idea to the Pastor at Spring Hill Baptist, the church she and her husband attend.

This introduced her to Jeb Berleth.

Berleth, a retired detective from New York, is a teacher’s aide and provides security for Spring Hill Christian Academy (SHCA). He’s been with the school for the past 11 years and is actively involved in children’s ministries. He currently runs the AWANA (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15)) ministry at Spring Hill Baptist Church.

“I have a heart for the kids,” Berleth said.

Joining up with Berleth, the church provided her access to the Spring Hill Christian Academy gym on Tuesday nights for her Double Dutch club.

“It's still in its beginning stage, but one night we had up to fifteen kids,” Berleth said. Berleth opens the gym for the club as well as providing moral support. “I was getting involved with the swinging of the ropes… I tried jumping, but they kept hitting me in the head. It was a lot of fun.”

Becoming involved in this club or any club helps kids understand more about breaking down barriers of low self-esteem or even background differences to build new friendships. They learn to increase respect for each other, to support their teammates, to face adversities.

“They definitely will make new friends,”

Berleth said. “They will get used to competition eventually because once they get into understanding what they are learning to do, which they are getting better at each and every week, then they start competing against each other and other groups. I think that will help them with life in general, because life is a competition per se.”

As the game requires quick responses, good eye perception as well as a lot of concentration it takes a lot of practice.

“This helps him (Oscar) get along with other people,” Tabitha Villa said.

Her son, Oscar (7) has ADHD (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder). “It helps him with hand and eye coordination a little bit better, it also helps him to be able to learn discipline because if he doesn’t have the discipline to keep his hands at the right speed or his feet at the right speed he won’t be able to coordinate that move.”

not only personally but building stronger relationships between parent and child.

“I wanted to do something important especially for the kids,” Kwarren said.

The Double Dutch club is a Christian based community club that meets every Tuesday at 6:30pm in the Spring Hill Christian Academy gym.

and spend some time agreeing in faith that God would send some rain. Many people arrived and you could sense the seriousness among the crowd. As the pastor was getting ready to begin the meeting, he noticed a young girl standing quietly in the front. Her face was beaming with excitement and then he saw beside her, open and ready for use, was a large colorful umbrella.

As he stared at the umbrella, he was a little ashamed that he did not bring one but also felt a sudden surge of hope and confidence. The little girl’s childlike innocence warmed his heart as he realized how much faith

she possessed. Though the town had come together to pray for rain, it seemed no one else had thought that maybe they should bring an umbrella to keep from getting wet.

A life without a positive expectation and a hopeful anticipation of goodness is an example of the miserable pessimist who abides in the shadows of fear and sadness. The world and even our own human nature is constantly telling us it’s impossible, it’s risky, it’s hopeless, but we will believe that nothing is too difficult for God and all things are possible with Him.
