About a year ago our own Julie Maglio interviewed astronaut Shane Kimbrough on his return form the International Space Station. Shane Kimbrough has a

lot of family in the area. James Walt Kimbrough came to Hernando County in the early 1900’s and was a cattle and citrus farmer in Spring Lake. The family grew and became prominent in Hernando County. Our sports pages often list the accomplishments of Shane’s cousins. Most recently, Karli Kimbrough was featured as the 2018 Salutatorian of Hernando High School. We recently learned that Shane See SOCCER BALL, Page 14

Patriotism on display county-wide for July 4 celebrations by JULIE B. MAGLIO, ALICE MARY HERDEN STAFF WRITERS

There were a number of great events happening locally to commemorate our nation’s Independence Day. We were very impressed with the turnout at the county’s Red, White and Brews celebration on July 3 at the Lake House, which featured several great bands, food trucks, fireworks and of course brews. Walking through the event it was easy to tell what was most popular with festival goers. The longest lines formed for the brews and the beef jerky (there were long lines to use the port o john as well, but I won’t mention that outside of the parentheses). The lawn behind the Lake House was packed with people listening to the bands rocking on stage. Cars were parked at least a quarter mile down Applegate Drive towards Commercial Way. Many people set up their blankets along Applegate near the shopping center parking lot to watch the fireworks. A parade is an important part See JULY 4, Page 20

Weeki Wachee football takes part in Florida High School Association 7v7 summer tournament The Hornets have been working a lot on their passing game over the off-season with all the passing tournaments they’ve been involved in. They saw much success at the most recent Florida High School 7v7 tournament held a week ago. Weeki Wachee traveled out to Haines City and found plenty of success against schools across the state of Florida. During the tournament, the Hornets faced

host Haines City (20-8 win) and Sandalwood (26-25 win) in the first couple of tournament games. Weeki Wachee followed up the tourney with its own 7v7 tournament, the ‘Sting and Shoot.’ The weather played a factor throughout the tournament, but Weeki Wachee was able to go 3-0 during pool play. The Hornets will have one of the top passers in Hernando County returning under center for them in Vaughn Sykora, who is coming off a solid 2017 campaign for Weeki Wachee. In 2017, Sykora threw for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns. The senior signal caller will look to drop his touchdown-to-interception ratio, as Sykora tossed

to the Hernando Sun and we'll send you a Hernando Sun bumper magnet as a token of our appreciation!
