About a year ago our own Julie Maglio interviewed astronaut Shane Kimbrough on his return form the International Space Station. Shane Kimbrough has a

lot of family in the area. James Walt Kimbrough came to Hernando County in the early 1900’s and was a cattle and citrus farmer in Spring Lake. The family grew and became prominent in Hernando County. Our sports pages often list the accomplishments of Shane’s cousins. Most recently, Karli Kimbrough was featured as the 2018 Salutatorian of Hernando High School.

Patriotism on display county-wide for July 4 celebrations

There were a number of great events happening locally to commemorate our nation’s Independence Day. We were very impressed with the turnout at the county’s Red, White and Brews celebration on July 3 at the Lake House, which featured several great bands, food trucks, fireworks and of course brews. Walking through the event it was easy to tell what was most popular with festival goers. The longest lines formed for the brews and the beef jerky (there were long lines to use the port o john as well, but I won’t mention that outside of the parentheses). The lawn behind the Lake House was packed with people listening to the bands rocking on stage. Cars were parked at least a quarter mile down Applegate Drive towards Commercial Way. Many people set up their blankets along Applegate near the shopping center parking lot to watch the fireworks.

Florida’s Constitution and Florida Statutes provide a basic framework for filling a vacant City Council seat.

Depending on the length of time before an election (more than 90 days but less than six months), the City Council can select a replacement. If the seat is vacant more than six months, a special election must be called.

Kahler’s vacancy falls inside the six-month guideline, which means the City Council has discretion in the method used to choose the next council member. City Manager Mark Kutney offered the suggestion from a previous vacant seat: letters of interest, received over a period of one week, would be presented to the remaining council members.

They would then vote on Kahler’s replacement.

Kutney explained that in 2015 the City Council adopted a resolution to break a tie, but it was

specific to the vacancy of Council seat #3. Kutney suggested adopting a new resolution to allow the same method to be used to break a tie for any open seat.

Vice Mayor Robert Battista agreed that the letters could be received and a vote taken at the July 16, 2018 meeting. The selected individual would be expected to become familiar with the published online agenda so that he or she could participate in the remainder of the meeting on that night.

With Kahler’s seat vacant, and Council Member Kemmerer absent, the Council voted 3-0 to amend the 2015 resolution so that it is applicable for all open council seats.

They also voted 3-0 to advertise the open position with a submission deadline of July 13, 2018.

The letters of interest will be delivered to council members before the close of business that day.

Mosquito Control Director requests contract extension with Dept. of Agriculture

Mosquitos are not merely annoying, but they can carry some potentially life-threatening diseases. Residents or their pets who spend any time outside or the tourists who come to the Adventure Coast are impacted by mosquitoes.

Last year, Hernando County’s Mosquito Control department was awarded a $75,000 grant from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) to purchase equipment for real-time testing of mosquitoes for diseases. This would eliminate the weeks of waiting for the virus to incubate in chickens or for mosquitoes to be sent to labs for testing.

The County provided $22,500 in matching funds.

Since her department was frugal with the funds, Mosquito Control Director Sandra Fisher-Grainger advised the BOCC that she would like to purchase new, rather than used, equipment. To do this, the contract deadline needed to be extended from June 30, 2018 to August 15, 2018. The BOCC voted unanimously to approve the contract extension and the purchase of the new equipment.

Fisher-Grainger followed this request with a presentation of what the Mosquito Control department does. Enhancing quality of life for Hernando County residents comes from Integrated Pest Management, a four-pronged approach to the reduction of mosquitoes.

Surveillance. Finding out just how many of the 40+ species of mosquitoes are in different areas of the county can come from such low-tech methods as counting the number of mosquitoes that land on someone’s arm in a minute, to testing chickens on a weekly basis or attracting mosquitoes with some dry ice to simulate an animal or person exhaling.

West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) are two of the

more common diseases found in this area.

Fisher-Grainger said that both Marion and Orange Counties are currently experiencing an outbreak of EEE, concerning for the large horse population in Marion County.

Hernando County has not registered any positive findings for either of those diseases this year.

Control. Fisher-Grainger explained the two types of methods for controlling the mosquito population: biological (mosquito-eating fish that are introduced into drainage ditches and ponds) and chemical (which target either mosquito larvae to prevent them from reaching adulthood, or sprays to kill adults).

Barrier spraying is

designed to keep mosquitoes from leaving an area by attaching to leaves and repelling the mosquitoes.

The department can no longer just schedule the truck to make the rounds of neighborhoods. It must meet specific guidelines set out in Florida Statutes and in the Administrative Code before they can send a truck to spray chemicals.

The month of May was filled with many rainy days, preventing any spraying. According to Fisher-Grainger, if the spraying had occurred in the rain, the chemicals would have just fallen to the ground with the rain.

Source Reduction.

Fisher-Grainger stated that “home-grown” mosquitoes are the most

plentiful and come from sources that are easily preventable: turning over containers, recycling used tires, and eliminating stagnant water around a home.

The Tire Amnesty program was determined to be successful due to the number of tires brought in.

Education/Outreach.

Increasing public awareness happens through various events and activities is the fourth way that Mosquito Control fights large populations of mosquitoes. These events can be found on the department’s Facebook page and on their website.

They were observing him on video as he selected a pair of LG Bluetooth headphones (valued at $55.00) from a shelf.

He then entered the sporting goods department and opened the packaging, placing the headphones in his left front shorts pocket. He also selected a 20 ounce Pepsi (valued at $1.78) and consumed it while in the store. He then exited out of the Garden Department passing all points of sale without attempting to pay for the items. Loss prevention then detained him until the arrival of law enforcement.

Upon my contact with the defendant and post Miranda warning, he openly admitted to the offense and advised the he “was being stupid”.

I then conducted a traffic stop on the said vehicle at the intersection of Toucan Blvd and Commercial Way for the traffic violation.

Contact was made with the defendant who was the only person in the vehicle, the defendant identified himself with a Florida Driver’s license. Immediately while talking to the defendant, I smelt the odor of marijuana omitting from the vehicle. I asked the defendant why his vehicle smelt like marijuana and he replied “I just got done smoking”. I then asked the defendant if there was anything illegal or any more marijuana inside of his vehicle and he stated “no”.

I then searched the inside of the vehicle and located a clear bag containing a green leafy substance that through my training and experience was consistent with marijuana. I then notified the defendant that I found a clear bag containing marijuana and he stated “I had like five people in the car someone must have slipped it in there”.

Using Narco test kit 7608 the green leafy substance tested positive for Marijuana. Using OHAUS scale model no. C305-S SN. 47871 the marijuana weighed 35.5 grams without the clear bag.

The defendant was arrested and transported to the Hernando County Jail.

The defendant received a court date of 07/24/2018 room D at 0900 hours. The defendant received a bond of $2,000.

17:43, 7305 BROAD ST, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34601 Arrest Summary: On 6/28/18 I responded to the Walmart located at 7305 Broad Street in reference to a theft.

Upon arrival contact was made with Walmart Loss Prevention agent who advised that he observed the defendant Kehli Fleenor taking a battery charger out of the packaging and later disposing the packaging inside the store. The defendant then finished walking through the store carrying on her arm two hammocks. Once the defendant was finished she exited the store passing all points of sale making no attempt to pay for the two hammocks or the battery charger.

The defendant was detained and brought back into Walmart loss prevention office where all three items totaling $138.80 where recovered and returned to the store.

A criminal history check of the defendant revealed that she had been charged with two prior thefts on 11/27/02 under Hernando County court case number 272002MM002517MMAXMX and on 12/31/03 under Hernando County court case number 272009MM003334MMAXMX. The defendant was then arrested and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident where she is being held on a $2,000 bond with a court date of 7/24/18 at 0900 hours in court room D. GARDIN, TARA CHRISTINA YOB: 1984 CHARGES: GRAND THEFT Arrested at: 06/26/2018, 20:17, 7917 CRYSTAL BROOK CIR, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34601 Arrest Summary: On 0626-2018, I was dispatched to the residence located at 7917 Crystal Brook Circle, Brooksville, Florida 34601, in reference to a theft.

Upon my arrival, contact was made with the victim, Bernice Haderthauer.

Bernice stated that she had recently been having various issues with her granddaughter/defendant, Tara Gardin, to include drug use, verbal abuse, and theft. Bernice advised that the defendant had been living with her for several months, in which sometime during the beginning of February 2018, she discovered two of her rings missing out of her jewelry box, that was located in her bedroom. Bernice stated that she then questioned the defendant in reference to the missing rings, at which time she admitted to stealing them and pawning them at two pawn stores located in Brooksville, Florida. Bernice described the

both rings as having a gold band in which contained a diamond ($120.00 value) and the other contained various blue and pink stones ($100.00 value).

Bernice advised that the defendant never had permission to take the rings or pawn them, and that she was never able to retrieve the rings due to not being able to afford to buy them back.

A computer check was completed via ACISS for the defendant, which revealed two pawn transaction on 02-10-2018 and 02-11-2018 in which two rings women’s rings were pawned by the defendant at “Jewels N Time” and “American Gun & Pawn”.

The defendant was then interviewed in reference to the rings in which post Miranda, she admitted two stealing both rings from Bernice’s jewelry box and then pawning them, so that she would be able to purchase a “dime” of marijuana. The defendant further advised that she had to pawn the rings at two separate locations due to the first pawn store advising that they could only accept one piece of jewelry at a time. The defendant stated that she knew she did not have permission to take the rings and that she did in fact admit to doing so to Bernice.

At that time the defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident and charged with one count of grand theft.

The defendant was issued a bond of $2,000.00 and given a court date of 0724-2018 at 0900 hours in courtroom D.

The defendant was arrested and transported to the Hernando County Jail.

The defendant received a court date of 07/24/2018 in Courtroom D at 0900 hours. The defendant received a bond of $5,000.

SOUSA, MARCO ANTONIO YOB: 1982 CHARGES: TRESPASS IN STRUCTURE/CONVEY Arrested at: 07/01/2018, 00:59, 4305 COMMERCIAL WAY, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 07/1/2018 I was dispatched to Steak and Shake located at 4305 Commercial Way located in Spring Hill. Upon arrival contact was made with Steak and Shake manager Dustin Rossbach and employee Justiana Mathew. Both stated that the defendant attempted to purchase 27.47 worth of food in the drive through.

The defendant then handed Justiana a $50.00 bill.

Justiana notified Dustin who both believed that the defendant passed a counterfeit bill.

I observed the $50.00 bill to have a serial number of MF442551191 the bill was also a 2013 series, the bill was cut unevenly and was immediately recognizable as a counter fit bill. The bill didn’t have a security strip and there was also discoloration in the bill.

I made contact with the defendant outside of the Steak and Shake post Miranda the defendant admitted that he knew the bill was counterfeit and he still attempted to pass the bill to make a purchase at Steak and Shake.

The defendant was arrested and transported to the Hernando County Jail.

The defendant received a $2,000 bail and a court date of 07/24/2018 courtroom D at 09000 hours.

Body of Croom Park Ranger found in Georgia, ranger’s boyfriend confesses

The Hernando County Sheriff ’s Office honors the memory of Deputy John Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office honored the memory Deputy John Mecklenburg on July 3, 2018. Mecklenburg was killed in the line of duty, in the early morning hours, on July 3, 2011.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard stood guard at the Fallen Deputies Memorial located in front of the Sheriff’s Office headquarters on July 3, 2018 from 0700 to 0900.

Deputy Mecklenburg and several other law enforcement officers were in vehicle pursuit of a fleeing felon. For causes unknown, Deputy Mecklenburg’s vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree in Pasco County.

Deputy Mecklenburg, a two-year veteran of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, was transported by helicopter to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Doctors and surgeons fought to save Deputy Mecklenburg’s life, unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries.

He left behind a wife, two small children, and several other family members and friends.

Mitzi Marie Babb, a Croom park ranger was last seen on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at 5 pm as she left work. On June 20, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office asked for help finding her on Facebook.

Over the next few days law enforcement officers spent hours searching for her in Croom including sending divers into the water. During the search enforcement named a person of interest in her disappearance: her boyfriend Jeffrey Michael Morrison. Mr. Morrison reportedly entered the the White Springs Agricultural Weigh Station on Interstate 75 and confessed to being wanted for killing his girlfriend. He said he “had dumped her body over a bridge.” He was then taken into custody by law enforcement.

TALLAHASSEE --- Florida teachers and unions filed a lawsuit Monday challenging the constitutionality of a new law that requires local unions to represent 50 percent or more of instructional personnel.

The law, which passed during this year’s legislative session and took effect Sunday, enacted a series of major changes in the public-school system.

Known as House Bill 7055, the measure created a new “Hope” scholarship program that will allow students who are bullied to transfer to private schools. It expanded financial support for Gardiner scholarships, which provide aid to disabled students. And it raised evidentiary standards for school boards trying to terminate charter schools.

But the lawsuit, which was filed by the Florida Education Association, nine local teachers’ unions, eight teachers and eight local union representatives, is aimed at a specific provision in the law that would result in local unions losing their certification if membership falls below 50 percent of the employees they represent in the collective-bargaining process.

Loss of certification would force the local unions to go through the costly, time-consuming process of holding elections to renew their right to represent teachers. If certification is lost, the local unions could not represent the instructional personnel in negotiations with local school boards on issues such as teacher pay, leave policies and

The lawsuit, filed in Leon County circuit court, alleges the new law is the result of a legislative “train” bill that contained multiple topics and violated a provision in the state Constitution that requires each law to “embrace but one subject and matter properly connected therewith.”

The new law “contains multiple subjects that have little relationship to one another and absolutely no relationship to the recertification requirement contained” in the measure, the lawsuit said.

“There is no natural or logical connection between education and union density or requiring a public employee union to recertify its status as the exclusive bargaining unit for members of the instructional staff of a school district,” the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit also alleges the union certification provision violates the “equal protection” clause in the state Constitution because it treats teachers’ unions differently from other public-employee unions, including those that represent law enforcement members.

The constitutional right for public employees to participate in a collective-bargaining process is also “impaired” by the new law, as well as the right of non-union members to benefit from the negotiations, the lawsuit said.

Melissa Rudd, a high school English teacher and president of the Wakulla Classroom Teachers Association who is a plaintiff in the lawsuit, said the new law is the latest in a series of policies undermining public school teachers, including “high-stakes” testing and the elimination

of annual contracts for new teachers.

“This really is like the last straw,” Rudd said.

“We’re not feeling defeated. We’re feeling angry. … We are tired of being the target of legislators.

We want to get back to focusing on our kids and improving everything that we can.”

Ron Meyer, a lawyer representing the teachers, said the lawsuit is specifically aimed at eliminating the union certification provision. But he said if the courts find the law violated the Constitution’s “one-subject” provision, it could invalidate the entire new law, including provisions like the Hope scholarships.

Joanne McCall, president of the Florida Education Association, which has about 140,000 members, said 13 local unions are below the 50 percent certification threshold, but that the bargaining units are working to increase membership and meet the requirement.

The lawsuit was filed against the three-member Florida Public Employees Relations Commission, the agency responsible for overseeing the collective-bargaining process.

In interviews Friday, incoming Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, and incoming House Speaker Jose Oliva, R-Miami Lakes, defended the new law, arguing it was part of the Legislature’s effort to expand school “choice” programs, providing more educational options for students and their families.

Galvano said he supports the public school system, noting he holds an annual golf tournament that raises money for the

Manatee County schools.

But he also said the recent legislative initiatives are aimed at focusing more on the students rather than the existing institutions.

“If you focus on the student, then all forms of education are important,” he said. “They have to back away from that institutional view and start looking at the student view. And I don’t think the suit will be successful.”

At the June 26, 2018 meeting, Aquatic Services Manager Keith Kolasa presented a progress report to the BOCC on the year-long tussock removal project at Hunters Lake and the essential role that Pasco Hernando State College (PHSC) played.

The tussocks are an invasive species, reducing the oxygen supply to the fish in some areas and creating hazards for boaters.

In addition to the 1.5 acres of tussocks removed

by Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC), the County successfully removed 14 acres of tussocks from the lake. FWC originally planned to remove as much as five acres, but funding issues prevented that.

Kolasa stated that having access to the northwestern section of the lake via the PHSC property had several benefits: deep water access for the harvesters even when the level of the lake dropped, cost reduction with direct access, and elimination of noise/traffic to local neighborhoods. PHSC also provided additional security.

placed in the water using a crane, so the Department of Public Works (DPW) stabilized a section of ground that would handle the weight of the heavy equipment. Each harvester could carry up to 30 cubic yards of tussocks per trip. A video gave perspective of the size of the harvester compared to the area of tussocks to be removed.

Once the harvester was full, the tussocks were offloaded by DPW and placed in piles to dry, making them lighter and easier to transport. Kolasa showed pictures of the process and estimated that 3,000 cubic yards of tussocks were removed from the lake. Once dry, the tussocks were transported off site and are currently being turned into nitrogen-rich compost.

DPW repaired the PHSC property at the end of the project by filling in ruts, smoothing the ground, and planting grass.

Before and after photos show a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the lake and in the accessibility for residents.

BOCC Chairman Steve Champion asked about natural ways to limit tussock growth. Boat traffic on the lake could help in the maintenance, Kolasa said. Frequent use of the lake prevents the tussocks from forming large clumps. The boat ramp is open and accessible to the

Kolasa remarked that the project’s actual cost was $121,010. Texas Aquatics, the company contracted to harvest the tussocks, was paid $68,250. The remainder went to DPW for the various tasks they had to prepare the site, work with Texas Aquatics, and to return the land to PHSC in good condition.

The agreement with PHSC for use of the property was for a single use, but the success of the project and the cooperation between the college Southeast Basin, Eastpoint Ct before tussock removal and the County led Kolasa to propose a five-year land use agreement between the County and PHSC. The improvements the County made to the site benefit the college as well.

PHSC’s Board of Trustees and the County’s attorney reviewed and approved the new agreement.

Commissioner Wayne Dukes recommended a resolution that the BOCC could present to PHSC to thank them for their cooperation. “We couldn’t have done what we did without their help,” he said.

The BOCC voted unanimously to approve the five-year land use Southeast Basin, Eastpoint Ct after tussock removal agreement, and Dukes was given consensus to draft a resolution honoring PHSC.

Baby Boomers, Millennials and other generations gathered at The Farm on Lake Lindsey Road for Hippie Fest 2018, on June 15, 16 and 17. Tie-dye, fringe, flowers and bell bottom jeans were in vogue here.

For a $5 admission, visitors could tour the campground and visit tents for tie-dye making, glass-blowing, clothes, jewelry and more. They could join the Drum Circle, Hippie Yoga and Meditation. Dozens of musicians played songs from the 60s on the Main Stage, the Live Oak Stage and the Jam Tent.

Billy the Kid to visit the 1885 Train Depot Museum in Brooksville Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear the story of William H. Cox II, “BILLY THE KID.” He recounts his adventure of 30 years ago when he experienced a life-changing event that found him literally living in the footsteps of the legendary figure of the wild wild West, William H. Bonney, known infamously as “Billy the Kid.” Billy has written an autobiography about his life and adventures entitled: “The Adventures & Times of William H. Cox II, Billy the Kid.” Thirty years ago, Billy took a road trip to Roswell, New Mexico to learn about the land and history of that place after seeing the movie “Young Guns.” Little did he know he was headed for an experience that would change his personal history and had everybody in the SouthWest saying that New Mexico’s notorious son was back.

As Billy recounts, he was twenty two years old and full of energy.

Arriving in Roswell, New Mexico, he stepped off the bus, not knowing where to go. He just went with the direction of the wind. It led him to the Roswell Museum. As he walked into the museum, the historian immediately approached him and said he looked just like “Billy the Kid.” “What is your name?” asked the historian. “Billy,” he replied.

The museum historian’s mouth dropped! “We need to get you to Lincoln,” he said, which was about sixty miles from Roswell.

So began his adventure as “Billy the Kid” in Lincoln, New Mexico.

Billy the Kid had returned in the person of William H. Cox II, who bore an uncanny likeness to the Kid. Let the Kid tell you the rest of the story in person where he will make his book available and answer questions. You will learn not just about Billy the Kid, you will learn that life is full of adventures and you don’t have to be ordinary, you can be original!

The word was out from the fire marshal in California’s Santa Cruz mountains to remove dry brush, firewood and debris close to cabins and homes, to help protect them from possible wildfires.

My summer neighbor, Stephanie Timmerman, and her three granddaughters heeded the call and worked together to move logs from a downed tree near their cabin porch.

“When we woke up, we were going to go to play at a nearby park,” said 9-yearold Mercedes Lopez. “But we first wanted to help Grandma with the big chore, before she went home to San Francisco.”

All morning long, they hoisted split wood onto a wagon, and rolled larger loads down the hill to the edge of the property.

“Sharing chores is essential to family life,” said Stephanie. “The home is a little community, and there are basic things that need to be done to maintain it. I tell my grandkids that we have to cook and eat, so we need clean pots and pans and dishes and silverware to do that.

Neatness and order are important, too, as we complete daily chores, including today’s task of stacking wood. Plus, we have a good time together getting a job done. Maybe you heard us laughing as we attempted to roll those big logs that take a lot of muscle,” she said to me.

Indeed, I had, which made me think about chores and how they are important to building healthy families.

Here are my tips as your family approaches a new spring season.

Everyone can share in tasks and celebrate the satisfaction of jobs well done.

Preschoolers: For the under-5’s, work and play are essentially the same.

Hanging out with you, whether doing kitchen chores, cleaning the house or tackling yard work is fun. Give them tasks in small doses, and cheer them on with praise.

Don’t be too picky. They’ll develop standards later. For now, let them be proud to be making a contribution.

School age: As they develop skills, emphasize giving them tasks doing things they like to do. Don’t just hand off drudgery chores, especially those you don’t like. Match their passions with a chore. If your preteen likes cooking, teach him how to use a good knife, and let him do the slicing and dicing for your next ratatouille.

Teens: Give them responsibility, not just tasks. Let her make the basic plans for your next vacation. Putting the hunt back into bowhunting

Last week’s article about the slain hunting dogs surely struck a nerve with many of you.

My inbox was packed with responses, which I forwarded to Mister Strong and his stepson Hunter. And to each of you who took a moment to write in and express your sympathies for the Strong family, we thank you.

This week, I’ve no new information to share about their case, but as developments arise, I promise to keep you all posted.

For now, I think I’d like to talk about one of my real passions; archery and bowhunting.

You see, I began learning to shoot a bow when I was only about five or six years old. It was a tiny fiberglass thing made by Bear Archery called a Sun Bear. It had been a gift to my father, for me, from Fred Bear himself. Forty-plus years later, I’d give anything to have that tiny bow back.

I learned to shoot with that tiny bow, but I also learned stalking and hunting techniques I still employ today. I stalked up on countless squirrels, robins, doves and rabbits and sometimes I’d get lucky and get a shot off. And on rare occasions, I’d even

Last season was the first bow season in which I hunted entirely in the old ways. I would like to encourage all of you to try it as well. It forces greater patience and closer encounters by bringing you well under twenty yards to your quarry. The up close and personal aspect is what mostly appeals to me. It takes every bit of skill as a woodsman and hunter to bring you to within spitting distance of wild game.

The old wooden bows with wooden arrows, fletched from the wings of turkeys I hunted and killed last Spring, have a great feel to them.

They connect me back to my ancestors and I’ve always been one to long for the past. I don’t see the need for us to give up our skills in favor of technology. The hunt is more personal to me than that. Hernando Youth League dixie softball team won district championship; now headed to state tourney

The Hernando Youth League Dixie softball team (ponytail division) won the district tournament on June 17, 2018 and is headed to the state tournament to take place in Lake Placid beginning July 13, 2018. Since winning the district final against West Pasco, the team has been raising funds to participate in the state tournament. The team is coached by Tony Laviano and Geoff Cummings.

You may have seen the girls and their coaches at the Red White and Brews event this past fourth of July, selling lemonade and sweet tea. They need to raise enough funds to pay for lodging meals and supplies for 12 girls for 4 days.

heresa Weglarz is an avid hiker and has lived in Hernando County for over 30 years. On Jan. 26,, 2018 she created a social media group called Friends of Weeki Wachee (Weekiwachee) Preserve.

“I heard about the preserve and wanted to hike there,” Weglarz said. With frequent visits she realized how beautiful this preserve is as well as a pristine location in Hernando County.

“This place is incredible,” she remarked.

The social media group is open to anyone that would like to join and for those who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, walking and even fishing at the preserve. This group also shares stories about their visits and photographs taken of the scenic landscapes and the amazing wildlife.

After noticing members posting comments about the trash that was being left behind from previous visitors, Weglarz organized a group cleanup on July 3, 2018.

a need until they posted and I am really glad they did,” Raelene Souza-Wentz said. “It’s the (right) thing to do.”

Paola Vinje, secretary for the Spring Hill Nature Coast Lions Club, brought along her children, Hunter (3) Kymmie (12), to help with the clean-up.

“We have thought of trying to do some environmental community activities, and this (post) showed up to be a big opportunity,” Vinje said. Vinje hopes to coordinate future cleanups with Weglarz and the Spring Hill Nature Coast Lions Club.

The Weekiwachee Preserve offers over 11000 acres for many local residents to enjoy and is also a continual battle to keep “hot spots” clear of litter.

“We can be better at this; if you lead by example then people get the hint,” Weglarz said.

space station, Kimbrough has gone through a lot of routine rehabilitation and debriefings. “For the first two weeks after the flight, it’s pretty much all medical testing and you start your rehabilitation, working out kind of getting your strength back. Now I’m in a month long period of debriefs. I’m continuing my rehabilitation and reconditioning physically, but most of the days I’m in debriefings for all the different systems on the space station.”

Kimbrough explained that this covers anything he did in particular in regards to experiments, spacewalks and robotic arm operations.

“All those people want to know what worked, what didn’t work, how can we make it better for the next crew and all that.

It takes about a month to get through all the debriefings.”

He said he’ll be flying to Russia later this month to do debriefings with the Russian training team.

“Once that’s done, from June to October we hit the PR trail. We go out and speak all around the country, all around the world really, at various events, sharing the experience we had with everybody.”

“Then I have to start working again, about October,” he laughed.

“I don’t know what that job is,” he continued, “ but to answer your question earlier ‘What do you do when you’re not flying,’ most of our time as an astronaut is not flying. We all work technical jobs in our office that in general support everybody else that’s launching. You could be working in the space walking kind of world or working in robotics… management level, running different teams, doing experiments. But in general they all support our colleagues that are launching into space.”

So how does one actually become an astronaut?

Kimbrough explained that it requires hard work, a certain degree of luck and study in a STEM field is a must.

“For folks that want to be astronauts, obviously

you’re education needs to be in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) for your undergraduate as well as a graduate degree. I would highly recommend that just to be competitive with all the other applicants, you need at least a Master’s degree in a STEM field.

There’s plenty of routes to take and plenty of ways to do it. I was an aerospace engineer undergraduate and a systems engineer for my graduate degree. So in general it doesn’t matter what kind of engineering degree or math degree or science degree you get as long as you get one and then you do well at it.”

He explained the astronaut selection that just finished had 18,000 applicants and they will pick about 8 to 10 people out of that group. “If you have the basic requirements, you probably won’t be selected.

You have to be a superstar in everything you do. You have to do well in all the jobs that you do because we’re going to talk to all your former bosses and see how you interact with a team and those kind of things.”

You’re personality may have a bit to do with it as well. “Bottom line is when we’re selecting people we want to know that you’re somebody, that in my case I could be in a very small area with for very long periods of time and survive and get along and not be annoyed the whole time,” he joked.

“Of course education is a huge thing as well as work experience. We have some really really smart people here. Just incredible people with experiences in life that are very unique. Those are things that we look for as well.”

Kimbrough explained that while he had wanted to be an astronaut since childhood, it wasn’t a goal that would break him if never achieved. His career before becoming an astronaut was quite notable.

“I was an army officer for most of my career and it’s an incredible career just being able to serve your country and for me it was a big deal in being able to

do that for many years...

Although I wanted to be an astronaut since I was a little kid, I never kind of made that the end all.”

He explained, “No matter who you are, you could be the best person in the world, the chances of you getting selected as an astronaut are pretty slim.

And so I always had that in the back of my mind. I never planned on getting selected... Towards the end when I was applying in 2004, I knew I was a competitive candidate but still if it didn’t happen it wasn’t going to make or break my career or my life or anything like that.

I would caution folks too that want to be astronauts that it’s a great goal to have but everybody can’t be astronauts. We need people working in Mission Control and in building our spacecraft as well. So if they’re interested in the science field and want to be part of the space program, we need thousands and thousands of people to do that.”

While Kimbrough would love to set foot on the moon, like the astronauts of his childhood, there is no doubt that NASA’s future direction is Mars, with the moon’s orbit providing a sort of gateway between earth and the red planet. NASA is planning to create a space station near the moon, termed a “deep space gateway” and they are in the process of developing the spacecraft to take them beyond it, Orion.

The next Orion mission, Exploration Mission-1 will take place in 2019 and will be uncrewed.

“I just personally would like to do that (go to the moon) since that is what inspired me back when I was a little kid. Just watching the men walk on the moon, that was an amazing accomplishment for our country and for the space program. Of course it would be awesome for me to do that… but currently the plans are not to actually go land on the moon. sometimes our offspring will not always go the way we thought they would.

When children are young, they are subjected to the influences of their parents. As they grow older, they begin to explore and absorb what everyone else has to say about everything. In this process of comparing what they have been told with all of the new information they are gathering, it’s only a matter of time until they start forming their own opinions and worldviews about what is right and wrong. Often, these ideas and belief systems are different from their parents

and of course becomes an agonizing disappointment as they watch their child evolve into someone they never imagined. Proverbs chapter 22 reminds us how important it is to teach and raise a child according to God’s principles and we are grateful for His promise that as they grow older they will remember and embrace these truths.

So, what can parents do that are facing this situation? I’ve been asked this question many times over the years and it seems as time goes on, I am hearing it even more.

We can start with accepting that we cannot change what anyone believes and this includes our precious child. To present this statement in an even more

After an exhaustive exploration, some young adults will accept and approve their parent’s views while others will conclude their parents were either not intellectually able or willing to research the subject thus hindering their understanding. Moms and dads are not intentionally leading their children into error, but we can all make mistakes. Often, the child attempts to explain their newly discovered persuasions, only to encounter intense attitudes of displeasure and rejection. In these cases, it’s common to have both sides praying for each other that God will open eyes and hearts.

Probably not. So, once we understand the guidelines of the situation, we can move forward. We are living in an ever-changing world that is filled with all types of philosophies and ideologies which are being advertised as correct and acceptable alternative truths. Since we are referring to our ideas and opinions, let’s go back and recall our own experiences when we were in our teens and early twenties. As you were developing into an adult, did you agree with the views of your parents?

When we pray we know that trusting God is acknowledging that He is the only one who has the power to transform someone’s thinking. Along with this fervent commitment to intercede, I must include another consideration just as important.

There is a huge difference between asking God to make someone believe like we do and asking Him to open their eyes to the truth. You see, if we are just wanting a “mini-me” we are missing the point.

Having someone who believes exactly like us might make us feel good, but what if we are wrong?

At the end of the day, sometimes the parents are right and sometimes the next generation is right. Nonetheless, it’s important to remember that God’s love is what binds us together far beyond our convictions and interpretations. Yes, what we believe is who we are and learning how to get along with someone when you strongly disagree with

them is challenging to say the least, but if we desire to have a meaningful relationship with them, it is also necessary. Since Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, we will always discover more unity and agreement when we humbly listen and learn from Him. The Hernando County Chamber of Commerce held the official Ribbon Cutting for Marina Rose Enterprises on June 19, 2018. Over a hundred guests assembled at the Hernando Beach Marina to celebrate Hernando County’s newest dinner cruise and party boat, the Island Rose.

told the group about the different cruises available and explained how when taking a booking, they question the guest on preferences like volume of music, what type of music and tailors each cruise to accommodate the guests in every way possible. The Rossi’s also announced their newest boat, the Adventure Rose,

coming soon, to offer different boating experiences.

Guests visited each boat and enjoyed a wide variety of delicious foods and drinks catered by the Cove. The Island Rose is located at Hernando Beach Marina Slip #18.

Segway offers a safe, fun way to visit destinations in Tampa and St.Petersburg

BY SUE QUIGLEY HERNANDO SUN WRITER I’ve been lucky enough to have enjoyed several Segway tours throughout Europe. From Rome to Berlin to Stockholm and now, here at home, in Tampa and St.Petersburg. It’s a whole load of fun once you suss out your equilibrium!

After seeing a great deal for tickets on Groupon, I took my daughter and granddaughter on a Magic Carpet Glide Segway Tour in Tampa.

What is a Segway, you ask?

It’s a two-wheeled, self-balancing motorized personal vehicle with an upright handlebar. There’s a generous platform for your feet and, once powered on, the Segway balances automatically.

(The name Segway is a homophone of the word ‘segue,’ meaning smooth transition.)

It’s equipped with a computer, gyroscopic sensors and fluid-based leveling sensors that detect your weight shift. It’s so intuitive, you just stand on it and the Segway adjusts to you.

To start moving, steer the upright handlebar in whatever direction you want and when you’re ready to go forward, just lean slightly forward with the handlebar and it moves ahead. When you want to stop, just lean back and gently pull the handlebar towards you. Easy as that.

The Tampa Bay tour begins at the Embassy Suites Tampa at the corner of Channelside Drive and South Franklin Street. There is a parking garage inside the Embassy Suites, as well as a parking lot on Channelside Drive across the street. All tour participants meet at this location and receive a lesson before the tour begins — instruction only takes a few minutes and certainly less time than learning to ride a bike. The tour guide gives out helmets and pouches for personal items.

Our guide was great and gave us a lot of information on our Tampa Bay destinations as we toured. We rode through beautiful downtown Tampa stopping at places like Amalie Arena, Bayshore Boulevard, Harbour Island, Tampa Convention Center, Curtis Hixon Park, University of Tampa, and the Tampa Riverwalk.

It’s really a neat way for tourists

or residents alike to experience Tampa. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the city for a few days wanting to learn more about the city and have a little fun along the way. Tampa Bay also offers a night glider tour at $55 per person.

The following week, we went on the St. Petersburg tour and we were not disappointed. We had beautiful weather and another fantastic tour guide.

Tours last about 90 minutes and the tour groups are small. Minimum of two and maximum of eight riders in each group. Smaller groups make it easy for the tour guide to keep an eye on us all and to answer any questions we have.

Independence Day: America’s exceptionalism the opposite of fascism A world without borders is absurd. This would mean all national governments would concede their powers to a centrally controlled entity like the European Union, which is having significant problems maintaining its cohesiveness. In order to have a one-world government, all the existing nations in the world would have to peacefully give up their national powers and cultural identities or more likely be forced to do so. This scheme is nothing more than a nightmarish fantasy.

There have been nations that have created empires through military conquest. They have expanded their borders to control many other nations. There has never been a period when nations voluntarily denounced their rights to determine who could enter their borders. Small nations have fought to keep their independence not abandon it as other nations attempted to gobble them up.

On our Independence Day, 2018, we should be proud that we fought against the most powerful empire at the time sacrificing our men and treasure to obtain our freedom.

The United States has a short but spectacular history upon the world stage. It is the longest existing nation that established a Constitutional Republic. It created itself as an economic and military powerhouse.

It has given its citizens a Bill of Rights that has protected them from their own government. People from all nations have flocked to its shores.

Currently many of them are placing themselves and their children in peril to enter this great nation. The majority wants to become a part of America, not destroy it. These people want to be Americans.

Currently a small group of political elites from all over the world has attempted to convince unrealistic idealists that a world without borders would create a better one. Without borders people can move where they desire without permission or obligation to the laws of the particular “country.” The prosperity of the citizens of the developed nations would be robbed for the “greater good” of the egalitarian world rule by a miniscule, all-knowing elite. This would bring revolutionary chaos, and then order by imposing rigid limits on the people’s freedom.

Any semi knowledgeable person from any part of the world realizes that this type of government would be an oppressive regime. The citizens of the European Union are living in a governmental system where they lack power and influence, which is diminishing their future. The same can be said of any dictatorial, communist or bureaucratically controlled governments.

With all its defects, the United States is still the most productive and the freest nation in the world.

We now are witnessing a shadow government’s attempt to control our institutions illegally but our constitutional checks and balances are working. Citizen rights have been abused yet we have been provided avenues to correct and limit them. It is our written constitution that has protected us by allowing us to limit our own official’s power. America is an exceptional nation that cannot be denied from factual evidence.

The campaign to equate our allegiance and love of our country to fascism is disgustingly offensive.

In WWII Germany, Italy and Japan used their military power to conquer and impose repressive rule.

They exterminated many citizens to intimidate them into silence.

American soldiers fought and died across the Atlantic to free people from fascism for no gain of their own.

There is no moral or cultural equivalence of the USA with any fascist nation. However, progressives are making the following of our border laws a form of fascism.

Thinking back to when you were little you can probably remember the love and fun times with grandma and grandpa. It was a sweet love, wasn’t it? Now fast forward to you being all grown up a job, a wife, kids of your own and probably even blessed with your own grandbabies now.

Now you are a grandma or grandpa with the love you had when you were just a young one, but now you know family core values and the sense of love and protection for your very own little grandbabies.

You either grew up in Florida or you moved here, maybe to retire. Then your family is faced with the loss of your very own child, which in itself is devastating, but then you find out that you have zero rights in Florida to petition the court for visitation with your grandchild.

You can refer to Florida Law Chapter 752.011 to find out exactly what rights you have as a grandparent. Which are very limited, most likely you won’t qualify to file a petition and

your life is further destroyed when your grandbaby is gone too.

Savanna’s Law is what we need. Just ask yourself what you would do if you lost your child and then your grandchild.

Savanna’s Law also includes sibling visitation. Yes, did you know that grandbabies have zero rights in Florida to file a petition to see their brothers and sisters either.

Savanna’s Law is an amendment to the current statute that grants grandparent/siblings to said child/children in the event of the death of one parent. It makes it legal to file a petition immediately for visitation without fear of being sued, because you want to see and be involved in said child’s life after the loss of a parent. The law supports and promotes family values and structure and would be created to promote child development.

It would also allow families to help the child be a more well rounded productive member of society. The importance of family structure would be seen through this law as family bonding plays a crucial role

in the healthy development of any child. This law would result in keeping more families and children together in the face of tragedy.

Savanna’s Law has the ability to positively impact the community socio-economically, because there are many grandparents/families already supporting children and they find it hard to raise their grandchildren on their limited income. This in turn affects how children are raised and limits the opportunities for these children in these situations.

Savanna’s Law has the ability to affect criminal statistics in your county by changing the way children are raised.

Creating a healthy, nurturing environment for a child lowers the risk of them engaging in risky behavior such as drugs, criminal acts, dropping out of school, etc. Statistics show that children who are raised in a supportive environment flourish. This would then result in this child becoming a productive member of the community both financially and independently.

Waste Flavors I just watched a documentary about alcohol, one specifically about beer. As in all such shows on the methodology of fermentation and blending, how alcohol is actually made was a notable segment. I’ve known about it for a long time, that yeast consumes sugar and makes alcohol as a waste product. But until now I never really considered what the word “waste” meant. Waste?

You mean alcohol is yeast pee? Good lord! I know what yeast looks like, but what kind of digestive system does it have? Do yeast also poop? Is that in my beer? (Come to think of it, the oxygen we breathe is microbial farts from three billion years ago. Try not to think about that!) Well, it’s way too late now.

As long as yeast pee is flavored with hops and barley, I’m fine with it.

In fact, there are many breweries that strive to hide the waste of yeast with many flavors.

By VINCENT CARDEGIN sent me a picture of a brand of lime flavored beer I’d never seen before, though the maker has been around since 1909, according to the label. We then had a lengthy textversation about different flavored beers and what flavors should be tried in the future. Back and forth we suggested different fruits: mango, papaya, star, guava, others, and even breadfruit. I was sure someone had already made apple and strawberry, and I know there’s an orange, and he informed me that there was indeed a grapefruit flavored brew. We agreed kiwi sounded like a potential winner. I insisted that it’s probably best that any fruit that smells like rotting meat should not be used—although I don’t mean to be insensitive to any cultural community that might flavor their

brainwash us. We proud Americans realize that the elites’ attempt to demean the majority of the hard working, patriotic American should be seen as a bizarre attempt to oppress us. Their attempt to make us feel we are the exploiters and oppressors of the poor of the world although the truth is the exact opposite. The USA is the beacon of freedom and opportunity, the guiding light of the world.

The vile, violent and destructive protests by the radical progressives should not intimidate us. They are enraged, sick souls who will never be satisfied. There is nothing inherently wrong with

beer that way.

Many text bubbles later, after we diverged into the silliness of pizza beer, and other pepperoni drinks that could be sipped through mozzarella straws—I’d prefer crunchy Monterey Jack— we finally decided the best new flavor should be banana.

I wondered if bananas could be juiced. Apparently not. They can only be pulped. So I proposed that we could make our own by pouring favorite brands through a cheesecloth loaded with banana mash. My brother didn’t like that, and I wasn’t going to try it anyway.

According to him, such beers are best fermented with a fruit’s peel, not simply juice-infused.

Although I have squeezed lime into my High Life, and it tastes just the same as Bud’s, my other attempts at changing the flavor have failed.

The latest was when, a few many months ago, I added sweet and spice to a bottle and let it blend in the fridge for an hour. I

On The Capital Gazette Shooting It is 12:18 a.m. on Friday, June 29 and I cannot sleep.

The day prior, five people, Rob Hiaasen, 59, Wendi Winters, 65, Gerald Fischman, 61, John McNamara, 56 and Rebecca Smith, 34, were shot and killed in the offices of the Capital Gazette, a newspaper based in Annapolis, Maryland.

Two others were injured in the shooting.

The suspect, 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos, has been apprehended. He is accused of using a shotgun and also carried either smoke grenades or flash-bangs grenades. A twitter account matching Ramos’ name has long railed against the Gazette, and he filed suit against the newspaper in July of 2012 for defamation. This was due to the newspaper’s reporting of a 2011 guilty plea Ramos handed in on a misdemeanor charge of harassment of a woman for months, including online harassment and calling her employer attempting to get her fired.

This was a bitter man trying to get “revenge” on an organization that accurately reported facts about a criminal activity he committed. What’s concerning about this act is not who did it, or the reason, but the fact that it escalated so much.

It is concerning that facts and articles of record are viewed as false or misleading because people don’t like what they say. It is concerning that we have a White House that started their term with the idea of “alternative facts.” It is concerning when the President of this country specifically targets news organizations and calls them our country’s biggest enemy. It is concerning when notorious extreme right winger Milo Yiannopoulos sends text messages to journalists saying “I can’t wait for the vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight.”

It’s time for the disclaimer. I am a registered Republican. I like to consider myself a moderate, what some people on the far end of the Republican spectrum would call a RINO, Republican In Name Only.

This is because I don’t fall into their camp, lock, stock and barrel.

This letter is not a call for the removal of guns. It is an indictment of the extreme views that the far end of the spectrum bleats out in opposition of stuff they don’t like to hear. It’s not an issue the political right deals with alone, nor is it something that the majority of Americans – left or right – does.

It is the far ends of the spectrum, those loudest and least willing to listen, that are the problem. Unfortunately, as with the shooting at the Capital Gazette, it only takes one extremist to pull of acts of terrible violence. These acts of violence come when seemingly permitted, especially by people the extremists hold in high esteem, such as Yiannopoulos.

The far-right blowhard backtracked like the cowardly worm he is almost as soon as the first reports of shooting at the newspaper’s office starting coming out. Claiming he wasn’t serious, how it was just him being a troll. The fact is, he texted those words. The fact is, he is someone right wing extremists listen to. Like it or not, the fact is, people report on what he says. He should know better. There’s no doubting his intelligence, most people don’t get to be that influential without it.

of any Independence Day celebration and Hernando County is lucky to have a lovely one hosted by the High Point community in Brooksville.

2018 participants included local candidates and dignitaries, our US Congressman for the 11th District, Dan Webster, our State Representative, Blaise Ingoglia, Sheriff Al Nienhuis and members of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office in squad cars, on bike and on horseback. There were a number of beautiful horse entries, individual and group golf cart entries, motorcycle and vintage car entries. Local community organizations that proudly displayed their patriotism in the parade include the Young Marines, the High Point safety patrol, Sons of Abraham Motorcycle Ministry, Nature Coast English Car Club, Civil Air Patrol, Hernando County Squadron 301, the High Point Quilters, High Point Lions Club and the NYPD Hernando 10-13 Club. One entry that was particularly eye catching was a group of friends: Isabella, Sandy, Ginny, Barbara, Dave and Butch dressed as Flamingos.

(We recently learned that flamingos are native to the state of Florida!) The costumes were created by High Point resident Gwen Roy and Guy Peters was their music man.

The parade’s Grand Marshal was WWII veteran Jack Sumerix, 97, whose goal was to live to the age of 100. Now that seems too easy for him and he’s made it his goal to get to 110! Jack has been a High Point resident for 38 years. He is actually a veteran of the Air Force, Army and Navy. He served in General George Patton’s 3rd Armored Division, seeing action in a number of countries including England, France, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. After returning home from war, he married his sweetheart Marian and the couple raised 3 children. Jack and Marian had 60 wonderful years together until she passed away.

It is the twisting of facts that start people on the path towards the violence that erupted at The Capital Gazette. Extremist loudmouths like Yiannopoulos give seeming permission when they make inflammatory statements and hardworking, honest people are being harmed because of it.

It won’t stop me. As long as I work for a newspaper, I will report the facts. Like them or not, facts will help inform our communities and allow people to make intelligent decisions. All

of the journalists at the Hernando Sun are hardworking people, people of character and integrity. Despite not knowing them, it is safe to assume the journalists at Fox, CNN and MSNBC are the same. It is also clear that the journalists at The Capital Gazette share those characteristics. Journalists report on the news, report on facts. Let’s not let the opinions of the far ends of the spectrums cloud them.
