June 1, 2018: the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office will now oversee law enforcement within the city of Brooksville and several former Brooksville Police Officers will be sworn in to serve as Sheriff’s Deputies.

SPRING HILLOn Monday, May 28, 2018, VFW Post 10209, of Spring Hill, held its annual Memorial Day Observance.

It was a wonderful turnout with over 100 attendees.

Prayer and Benediction was given by Lou Palermo. The Guest Speaker was Commissioner Steve Champion who gave an eloquent speech citing the United States casualties in the various conflicts throughout the history of our country. The Placing of the Wreath was done by Auxiliary President, Dawn White, and VFW Junior Vice Commander, Ron McCombs. Lowering of the Colors was performed by Bob Ross and Paul Welch.

The solemn homage of Taps was given by Commander Dan Lynch.

Following the conclusion of the Observance, the post held its Induction of Officers for the year 2018-2019.

The post and guests then enjoyed a barbeque and afternoon of entertainment

n May 28, 2018 thousands gathered together at Florida National Cemetery located 6502 SW 102nd Ave. in Bushnell to salute and honor our veterans and our fallen veterans. The National Cemetery Administration hosted Memorial Day ceremonies at VA national cemeteries across the country. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. Service Members who died while on active duty. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

The procession of vehicles entering The Florida National Cemetery were directed smoothly through the streets lined with approximately 400 American Flags of the Fallen which were donated by families of deceased veterans.

Springstead football players sign with colleges; Hernando’s Austin Legg signs with Missouri

SPRING HILL — With the school year complete, graduating athletes around Hernando County are still in search of where they’ll play on the collegiate level and a few have found their new homes.

In the days leading up to the end of the school year, two of Springstead’s top athletes are now signing with universities and they signed letters of intent.

Randy Morgan and Kyle Manuel signed with Advanced Prep Academy and Southeastern University, respectively. Both Morgan and Manuel played on Springtead’s football team this past 2017 campaign.

BOCC approves agreement with SWFWMD for Weeki Wachee carrying capacity study

The Weeki Wachee River has been a frequent subject of discussion in recent years, primarily due to its popularity. The number of people visiting the river, usually on watercraft has raised concerns of safety, damage to the riverbanks, litter, and harm to wildlife.

Based on these discussions, a Carrying Capacity Study agreement was signed between Hernando County and the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), each paying $125,000 to conduct the study, which is to begin on June 1, 2018 and conclude in December 2019. During this time, data will be collected about the amount and types of vessels on the river, and their effects on the natural landscape, sedimentation, The study aims to determine the rec-

reational carrying capacity of the main headspring and river that would allow the maximum level of public access and recreational enjoyment while preventing damage to the river bottom and shoreline, impacts to wildlife or hindrances to wildlife access.

At the regular meeting on May 22, 2018, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted unanimously to approve the agreement. Although the money marked for the study from the Quality of Life and Sensitive Land funds were moved into

county reserves that morning, the board expressed their confidence in paying for the study.

Commissioner John Allocco emphasized the importance of the research.

“We’re going to have to figure out how to pay for it. If we don’t, we’re putting the county at risk for losing the funds to address the river,” Allocco said the stall could ultimately decrease tourism dollars and people coming to Hernando County.

This project will be broken into two phases.

The first phase entails the development of the methodology for the capacity including estimated cost.

SWFWMD is funding this phase. Phase 2 is the actual study, which includes an ecologically based carrying capacity study to evaluate the effects on the natural systems of the Weeki Wachee River.

County to proceed in Barclay widening project

On May 22, 2018, the Board of the County Commissioners met to approve the Barclay Avenue Widening Project. They are planning on widening the road from two lanes to four lanes. This project had been a part of Hernando County’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan since around the year 2005.

The Board was allowed to obtain property from Samir and Samar Shakfeh, residents of Barclay Avenue. The cost to acquire the Shakfeh properties which includes attorney’s fees, damages, and extra costs for additional rightof-way along Barclay Avenue is $325,000.

The initial completion of the Barclay Avenue Widening Project is reliant on the removal of the Shakfeh properties, according to the decision of the Board and the Department of Public Works.

“This was a high one,” admitted Randy Griffith, Assistant County Attorney. However, Griffith continued to stress the importance of how “it is not as much the value of land as it is damage expenses.”

The Chairman of the Board, Steve Champion, brought up the idea of obtaining the land by eminent domain, but all decided against it as it would cost far more and the Shakfehs were willing to give over the land voluntarily.

Chairman Champion stated further in favor of the Barclay Widening

Project, “It’s dangerous out on that road. Coming out by the fire station, there. There’s a lot of traffic.”

“If we get these two properties, we are in phase two. The new Public Works Director says he is ready to redo the intersection at Elgin and realign the San Antonio-Barclay Intersection,” Randy Griffith explained. “The other side of Barclay is just empty land. There is nothing on them and the land can be valued later on.”

The estimated amount of time before the project

can begin is three to four months to allow time for everything to finalize and for the vacated land to be cleared out.

“There are three North-South ways to get to Spring Hill: Mariner, California, and Barclay.

Maybe we will even expand California way down the line, due to the amount of people. There are more travelers on Barclay, now, than the Sunshine Turnpike,” Randy Griffith stated, referring to the high amount of traffic volume that our community has been receiving.

Chairman Steve Champion stated,“There is a need for this [the widening project] in the community. There’s no doubt about it.”

All were in favor of proceeding with the project, and agreed that the Shakfeh property is necessary in order to begin and finish widening Barclay Avenue as soon as possible.

NRA Foundation awards $4800 in equipment to UF/IFAS Extension 4-H (Brooksville, FL) -The NRA Foundation has awarded UF/IFAS Extension Hernando County 4-H a grant totaling just under $4800 to expand their award winning shooting sports program. "We are very excited about attracting more youth by adding an Air Rifle discipline to what we offer, "said 4-H Youth Development Agent Nancy A. Moores, "and pleased that the NRA is making an investment in our community."

Hernando County 4-H is home to the Hernando Sportsman’s 4-H Club which has been offering hands on educational and safety programs in both rifle and shotgun. Air rifle will allow the program to not only expand in numbers served but offer a discipline more suited for youth ages 8-10. The focus of all 4-H programs is the development of youth as individuals and as responsible and productive citizens. The National 4-H Shooting Sports Program stands out as an example. Youth learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms, the principles of hunting and archery, and much more. The activities of the program and the

support of caring adult leaders provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, selfworth, and conservation ethics.

“Our shooting sports program is very family oriented and has been sponsored in part by the Hernando Sportsman’s Club, LLC for many years. Together, youth and adults work to learn respect and control of the firearm, marksmanship and sportsmanship, as well as self-discipline, responsibility, and teamwork,” said Agent Moores. “I’ve been serving UF/IFAS Extension Hernando County for almost 20 years and we have always had a thriving shooting sports program. We are committed to teaching young peo-

ple how to safely handle a firearm and to removing the curiosity that often leads to tragedies.”

The 4-H Youth Development program in Hernando County offers a variety of community clubs, day camps, residential camps, short term programs, and specialty events. I then asked her how she intended to pay for an outfit to which she stated she did not know. Once contact was made with this subject, it appeared she was the sole occupant of her 2012 silver in color, Honda Accord bearing Florida tag: JFAB36. The defendant refused all medical attention and remained on scene with law enforcement.

While interviewing the defendant , she consented to a search of the vehicle she was in control of.

During the vehicle search I located an orange RX pill bottle in the rear driver side of the vehicle behind the defendant’s seat. Within the RX bottle I located 6 small yellow oval pills imprinted “S901” A search via DRUGS.COM revealed the pill to be a schedule 4 controlled substance; Alprazolam.

4 white round pill imprinted “54 733” was also located within the RX bottle. A search via DRUGS.COM revealed the pill to be a schedule 2 controlled substance; Morphine.

Post Miranda, the defendant admitted to the narcotics found in the vehicle pertaining to her and could not provide any prescriptions for said drugs.

Nicholas advised the defendant has done this to several other inmates.

Contact was made with Ricardo S, who also advised the defendant asked him and Inmate John M if they wanted to see a "snack pack" and exposed his penis and testicles to them.

Inmate Randy E also came forward, stating that one morning he woke the defendant up and upon doing so, the defendant flashed his genitalia at him and stated "these nuts."

An interview was conducted with the defendant post-Miranda. During the interview, the defendant did admit to having exposed his genitalia to several people between 04222018 and 05032018 because he thought he was joking around and stated, "I thought it was cool to joke along with him." The defendant stated another inmate was also flashing his genitalia; however, no evidence of this could be found and no other inmates complained of anyone else behaving in this manor.

The defendant was subsequently arrested on four counts of exposure of sex organs with a total bond of $4,000.00. The defendnat was issued a bond of $4,000 and a court date of 6-20-2018 in court room “B” at 0900."

While looking for the vehicle, I came across a 2002

Chevy 1500 pick-up truck with a Florida tag 1274YG, which was stuck in the sand. This vehicle was just north of Cody’s Catfish Park, within the wildlife management area.

I made contact with the driver, identified by his Florida driver’s license as Andrew Meehan, the defendant. A check of the Florida tag revealed the Chevrolet was reported stolen out of this agency.

The defendant then drive slowly towards the victim, striking him with the front of her vehicle. The victim did not sustain any injuries from the vehicle. The defendant did throw an alcoholic beverage onto Paul C while he laid in his bed attempting to sleep.

She did this in anger because he fell asleep while she was speaking to him. I observed the entire length of the bed to be soaked where Paul had been laying, as if a drink was thrown at him. His clothing was also still wet on my arrival.

The defendant gave a different account of the events that took place and said that Paul spilled the drink on himself. The physical evidence proved otherwise due to the entire bed being soaked.

It should be noted that the defendant and Paul both openly admitted to being in a romantic relationship and are living together as boyfriend / girlfriend.

There were no other persons present in the home at the time of the offense.

Dangerous channel could get idle speed, no wake signs soon

Aquatic Service Manager, Keith Kolasa, approached the Board of County Commissioners on May 22, 2018. He presented Ordinance 2018-11 regarding amending boat regulations in Hernando Beach.

Back in 2015 and 2016, the Hernando County Port Authority went through the process to designate a half mile strip of the Hernando Beach Western Perimeter Canal located along the west segment of Gulf Winds Circle an Idle Speed/ No Wake zone due to obstruction of visibility and narrow channel width.

The channel is extremely narrow at less than 75 feet in width and there are two corner blind spots obstructing sight to less than 300 feet. During low tide, the narrow channel is bound by land on both sides.

Currently, it is the only area in Hernando Beach that is not currently an idle speed zone, therefore it is inconsistent with the rest of the area.

“The area should clearly be designated as an idle speed,” Keith Kolasa stated.

Instead they had to go through a more rigorous process which required the submission of a detailed application with various evidence documents, figures, photographs, aerial images and a site visit by FWC. The ordinance would need to be amended through FWC's Florida Administrative Code Consult.

County Commissioner John Allocco remarked, “Keith tried to be pro-

“We are going to put signs back up where they were already, where they were told to be removed,” Kolasa stated.

Commissioner Allocco made his frustration clear.

“We try as a Board and this county… to work hard to do the right things for the community… this is just an example of the frustration and why everything takes so long and costs so much.”

Chairman Steve Champion agreed. “This [amending boat regulations] is a long time coming.”

MIAMI (AP) — A Florida man has pleaded guilty to impersonating a member of Saudi Arabia's royal family to orchestrate several fraud schemes involving theft of millions of dollars.

Miami federal prosecutors said in a news release Tuesday that 47-year-old Anthony Gignac admitted using various aliases making it appear he was a Saudi royal and even drove a Ferrari with diplomatic license plates. Prosecutors say he faces a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty last week.

TALLAHASSEE --- As winds and rains let up from Subtropical Storm Alberto, Florida officials Tuesday were quickly spinning ways to draw tourists to areas that may have missed out on Memorial Day crowds.

Graphic arts students use their talent to design patrol vehicle wraps

Spring Hill, FL“...Sometimes we think that kids aren’t going to be able to do the as good a job as adults but I’m happy to report I was wrong,” Sheriff Al Nienhuis admitted in front of Nature Coast Technical High School.

He was referring to the spectacular new designs wrapped on two deputy vehicles, courtesy of NCT’s Graphic Arts class.

The finished product of the designs on the deputy vehicles were revealed to the public last Wednesday morning at 9AM at NCT. Deputy Mike Woodward, a Community Policing Deputy with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, had been brainstorming creative ways to spread crime prevention messages throughout our community.

He had the idea, but lacked a team to actually make the idea a reality. While he was patrolling the halls of the high school, he noticed there was a Graphic Arts Class. Woodward knew that the class was just the avenue he had been looking for to design the

vehicle wraps.

Woodward’s idea was to wrap messages on the deputy vehicles patrolling the county to get exposure for helpful crime prevention phrases. The phrases he decided to place on the vehicles were “Lock it or Lose it” and “If You See Something, Say Something.”

The messages were phrases that had been used in media releases from the Sheriff’s Office, as well as their social media, and other outlets and events. They had remained practically ineffective. The Sheriff’s Office had been noticing an increase in vehicle burglaries over the course of the past few months. They knew it was time to change their crime prevention methods. When Woodward presented the idea to his captain, it was met with hearty approval.

Deputy Woodward was coincidentally working at the school as a temporary replacement for the School Resource Officer, who was away for three weeks due to a special assignment.

“Upon approval we will re-submit the permit application and try to fast track it as fast as possible to get the signs changed,” Kolasa said in regards of what to do next.

After Deputy Woodward had left the designs to the creative energy of the graphic arts class, all he could do was wait and hope for the best.

It was quite the time crunch as the school year was abruptly coming to a close. The students only had two weeks to come up with designs, present it to Deputy Woodword, let him choose, then give the designs to a local company to wrap the deputy vehicles.

BOCC on Kass Circle plan: more focus needed on attracting businesses, less on social issues

On May 8, 2018, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) acting in its Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) capacity, discussed updates to the Kass Circle Community Redevelopment Area plan. Senior Planner Michelle Miller began the presentation with the history and progression of the project. The grant-funded study of the neighborhood began in 2014, and in 2016, a Finding of Necessity was completed, and a resolution was adopted by the BOCC in 2016. The CRA was formed during this time.

Several representatives from key agencies spoke to the board about the benefits of the revitalization project. The board expressed a hesitancy to have the county government involved in the project, which has departed from rebuilding infrastructure to focus on more socially-focused services and outreach, placing emphasis on community identity and engagements, housing and homelessness, community oriented policing and economic development.

After he graduates high school form Nature Coast, Diaz plans to go to PHSC and study Graphic Design, while he works for Illusion. The company was so impressed with his designs and artistic abilities that they had offered the high schooler a job.

C

urious to experience a cemetery after dusk when the gates are locked and closed? Now you can.

Greenwood Cemetery in the City of Orlando holds monthly moonlight walking tours that take you on a historical stroll through the cemetery. The walk is approximately four miles within the 120-acre cemetery and visits about 100 graves of notable individuals in Orlando’s history.

Established in 1880, Greenwood Cemetery offers scenic views during the day and glimpses of historical dignitaries, but exploring it in the dark by the light of the moon is a totally different experience.

From confederate and Union sections to many of Orlando's forefathers, Greenwood Cemetery is filled with history. Resting there are the people who made Orlando the city it is today and headstones will match the names of local streets and businesses everywhere.

An evening visit to Greenwood Cemetery starts as light begins to fade and continues as the moon rises in the sky.

The tours have been led since 2004 by cemetery sexton, Don Price and were originally started as a thank-you to volunteers who volunteered to clean up the cemetery after four hurricanes pounded Florida in a six-week period.

Some of Greenwood’s notable residents include dairyman T.G. Lee; Mayors Bob Carr and Mahlon Gore; Cassius Boone; Mayor Capt.

James Parramore; Mayor William Beardall; David Lockhart; Samuel Robinson; Principal William R. Boone; pharmacist Maynard Evans; Mayor Braxton Beacham; embalmer and undertaker Carey Hand; Joe Tinker and hardware store owner Joseph Bumby.

Participants of the tour can see the final resting place of July Perry (a prosperous black businessman who was lynched in the Ocoee massacre — a racially motivated attack on African-American residents in northern Ocoee on November 2, 1920.

The race riot started as a result of white attempts to suppress black voting and Perry was lynched because he was registering black voters for the 1920 presidential election. His murderers took his body to Orlando and he was found hanging from a lightpost.

Positioned on the highest point of Greenwood is the Wilmott Mausoleum. On June 1st, 1913, Mrs. J. W. Wilmott (wife of the Orlando business leader) took her grandson Fred Wilmott, Jr. and his friend Frank Pounds, Jr. to Lake Lucerne to swim. Sadly, the water was far too deep for the pair of 5-year-olds and they drowned. The mausoleum is the resting place for little Fred Jr. and his family.

rounding the mausoleum of Fred S. Weeks, a northerner who bought land locally around 1905 but then discovered it was swampy and worthless.

Weeks was so angry he erected a headstone at the entrance to the cemetery which was then also a public park and carved into the stonework a Biblical quote about thieves and the names of the swindlers.

Not liking the negative publicity, the swindlers who happened to be local attorneys, returned his money and the headstone was removed.

Later however, Weeks bought more cemetery plots and built the mausoleum we can see today. Again, he had the Bible quote and the attorneys’ names engraved into the stonework.

Weeks died in 1918 and is buried in the mausoleum. The "thieves" inscription remains clear today — but the three attorney’s names have been removed.

Other resting places of pioneers include Edna Giles Fuller, the first woman elected to Florida's legislature in 1928; Carey Hand, who in 1920 opened the first funeral home in Florida with its own chapel and opened the first crematory to be built south of Washington, D.C. Another permanent

Old Wagon Holds a Portable Garden Beautiful things can emerge when you dig right in. A natural, glorious garden that just happens to be edible is a great place to start.

So find an old wagon at a garage sale, or use one that your kids have outgrown, let the soil run through your fingers, and plant a garden on wheels together.

This is an easy project for the beginning gardeners in your family, and the results are so rewarding. Children can plant, water, weed and tend their own plants without becoming overwhelmed by a big garden plot. And since the garden on wheels is portable, they can move it around the yard or deck for maximum sun exposure throughout the day.

Here’s the stuff you need: —an old wagon, wheelbarrow or wagonlike toy on wheels —drill and 1/4-inch drill bit —wire mesh screen, such as window screen (optional) —potting soil mix —potted edible plants, such as herbs (parsley, basil, tarragon, thyme, etc.), lettuce and kale —kid-size gardening tools —watering can —Tinker Toys and waterproof pens for plant markers (optional) Here’s the fun: 1. An adult should drill several drainage holes in the bottom of the wagon or wheelbarrow about 6 inches apart.

You may wish to lay mesh screen over the bottom to keep soil from falling through the holes. Fill with potting soil mix. Leave at least 3/4 inch to the wagon edge.

2. Plant potted plants, keeping in mind their eventual size: Put taller plants in the middle, small plants along the sides. You also could plant a few lettuce seeds placed in the soil in the shape of the letter of your child’s first name. Or, choose a colorful edible flower or two.

3. Water with a watering can or slow-running hose. It’s a good idea to give it six hours of direct sun each day.

Add plant food throughout the growing season, and you’ll have the loveliest garden on wheels ever.

4. If your child wishes to make small identification markers for planted seeds and plants, simply attach a Tinker Toy wheel to a stick, and draw a picture with a marker on the wheels. Poke into the dirt by the seedlings or plants.

NASP BAI ARCHERY CERTIFICATION COURSE WEDNESDAY, DAY, JUNE 13, 2018 8 AM TO 4:30 PM

Easy Pulled Pork Ingredients

3lbs Boneless pork shoulder (skin / fat removed) Onion (chopped) ½ cup Chicken Broth 2 cups (choice of BBQ sauce) 2 Tablespoons mustard 3 Tablespoons honey 2 Tablespoons soy sauce Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Trim your pork of skin and fat.

Put onions and some broth in bottom

of cooker, place your pork in and pour remainder of broth over pork.

Cover and cook until tender est, 8 hours.

Cook on LOW. Once cooked remove pork, let cool. Shred meat removing all fat and gristle if any. Take off excess fat from your broth in cooker. Put pulled pork back into cooker and mix in your choice of barbecue sauce, honey, soy sauce and mustard. Salt and pepper to taste. Cook for est 1 hour on low.

Note: could serve on buns, with baked beans and veggies.

Scouting the bucks of summer

Toby Benoit is a best selling novelist and professional outdoorsman with thirty-five years of experience guiding and outfitting for big game all across America. Toby is a renowned archer and turkey hunting expert who manufactures custom game calls and is a regular judge at NWTF sanctioned turkey calling events across the Southeast.

I think about deer and turkey hunting during all parts of the year.

Even when I can’t hunt them, you can find me out I the woods studying the herd and learning all that I can. For me, Summer is not the time for beaches and margaritas, it’s the time to begin thinking about early season scouting.

The antlers on this year’s crop of bucks are about ninety percent grown and now is the time to begin inventorying your herd for the upcoming season.

As shadows lengthen and evenings cool, bucks begin their summertime feeding frenzy in anticipation of the fall breeding season.

Now, is a great time to spot bachelor groups of bucks prowling about in the early evening and feeding in out of the way corners of fields.

Fresh mowed hay fields are always a good bet to spot a feeding buck as are powerline right of ways and clear cuts.

Scouting cameras are a great way to keep an eye on what's going on in your hunting area, but they are not the only way. A sharp set of

eyeballs and some good old-fashioned sitting and watching works just as well.

Summertime is also the time of year when big bucks seem less aware that humans mean danger. They are out and about because they haven't been pressured in months and they are feeling the need to feed, but they will shut down to nocturnal feeding patterns if pressured. The key to summertime scouting is to keep your distance and scout low impact.

Observation blinds are a great tool for scouting, the same blinds you hunt from can serve a dual purpose. Or, they can be as simple as a few bales of hay or as sophisticated as a factory-built shooting house. Vehicles, too, can be effective when used correctly especially electric hunting carts, but most of my scouting is done in my truck driving the perimeters of my hunting areas and utilizing a quality set of binoculars.

Here are a few tips for low-impact big buck watching: - Watch from a dis-

tance, 300 to 800 yards is not too far - Get good binoculars or a spotting scope and use them.

- Never set up where deer can force you to expose yourself when leaving - Watch the wind; no different than in season, deer can smell you from six to eight hundred yards away.

- If scouting from a vehicle, park in inconspicuous spots and stay in it.

- If you surprise deer while driving, don't suddenly stop, slow down but keep on moving.

There are no guarantees that the deer you watch now will be there in September, but one thing's for sure, they will be on the feed for the next couple of months, affording you the opportunity to watch them grow and develop into the trophy you’ll wish to target later.

St. Leo has three teams compete for national championships

with the first game of the South Super Regional early Friday morning. The UAH Chargers nabbed the second game of the series to force a deciding game three.

Saint Leo eventually won the series 2-1 to advance to the Division II World Series in Salem, VA and faced Southern Indiana. There however, the Lions as the No. 6 seed would fall in a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Southern Indiana. Auria Mounts was able to pitch just a

little over five innings and took the loss to fall to 16-8. The Lions ended up yielding nine hits and an error in the loss.

Lastly in Saint Leo athletics, the Lions men's golf team competed at the National Championships in Muscle Shoals, AL, on the par-72, 7,407-yard Fighting Joe course on Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals.

The plaque tells the story of two of Orlando’s earliest civic-minded families – the Eppes and Shine families.

Descendants of President Thomas Jefferson, Francis Wayles Eppes VII, Jefferson’s grandson, moved to Orlando in 1869 to spend his final years as a citrus farmer at his home, Pine Hill on Lake Pineloch.

He helped found the First Episcopal Church, now the Cathedral of St Luke’s.

Three of the Shine Brothers married three daughters of Francis Eppes. David Shine became deputy clerk of Orange County and later postmaster. Captain Thomas J. Shine was the director of the First National Bank, a board of trade officer, an alderman and commander of the Orlando Guards, later named Shine Guards.

Thomas Shine built a home on Orange Avenue with the first indoor bathroom in Orlando. He named the cross street Jefferson Street in honor of his wife’s family.

With an increase of 8 students over last year’s 21 graduates, district leaders attribute the increase to strong academic advisement by certified school counselors.

“We know that the cost of sending children to college is a barrier for some families. By working together with our school principals, school counselors, teachers and our partners at PHSC, we implemented a more strategic approach that included a great awareness of academic options and good educational planning to make going to college an affordable option for students,” Supervisor of Secondary Programs for Hernando Schools, Dr. Marcia Austin said.

Dual Enrollment allows high school students to take college courses at the same time they complete requirements for their high school diploma. Hernando County School’s program partner is Pasco-Hernando State College. Each year, staff at PHSC and HCSD articulate detailed agreements to ensure students have a successful academic experience and reach graduation goals.

With 13 students, Weeki Wachee High School (WWHS) had the largest share of students earning their AA. “Even as freshman, we work very purposefully with our students to map out their pathway to earning the college degree. By providing the maximum number of dual enrollment courses along with advanced placement courses, students are able to reach the 60 credits they need for the AA,” WWHS Principal Troy La Barbara said.

Graduates who complete their AA while in high school, save over $6,300.00 in tuition alone and thousands more in textbooks fees.

“Even if students are not certain what they wish to do after high school, by taking advantage of dual enrollment, they have confidence in their ability to tackle college coursework and a college degree to prove it,” Austin said.

Sun Tech Cyber Security Program TECH TALK

A career field with a lot of potential for growth is cyber security. Large corporations are starting to require that their third parties have verifiable cyber security. This makes sense as Target was hacked through their HVAC (Air Conditioning) vendor. Other companies have been hacked via unexpected routes including a casino who was hacked by someone accessing their fish tank software and from there stealing sensitive information.

No matter the size of the company, cyber security is becoming more important.

Suncoast Technical Educational Center offers a certificate program in cyber security.

This program is open to all adults whether or not they have a GED or high school diploma.

er they need remedial classes. Suncoast Technical accepts the former military financial support. Suncoast Technical also works with partner agencies: Career Source, Mid Florida Community Services, Vocational Rehab and in some cases they can help with tuition.

The Suncoast Technical cyber security course is a two year program. It uses the TestOut online training courses. There are explanation videos, demonstration videos and tests. The students earn three certificates during the program: PC Pro, Network Pro, and Security Pro. These certificates are not accepted by PHSC. There is the opportunity to earn additional certifi-

cations from CompTIA (a leading tech association): A+, Network+, and Security+. The test out exams get you ready for the CompTIA exams and if you earn the certification, PHSC will award you 8 cert hours towards a degree.

So if you pass all three exams you will have 24 credit hours, if you

choose to get your Associate's Degree.

In addition to online courses to prepare to pass the exams they also cover current cyber security events in class to put the cyber security training into context. This classroom interaction can assist the students in being able to pass the exams.

Are they required to take a course in memory-impairment? Some companies have gone from making their staff take a two-day course to only a one-hour online class. This is most irresponsible.

Learn how they supervise wandering patients; also talk to the activity director to find out what activities he or she has for the memory-impaired.

This is a big one: ask how they feel about the patients having the right to continue using their regular physician. You might have to transport them to their own doctor yourself, but it may be well worth it.

Once patients become residents, they will most likely hit you with a hand-

ful of complaints. Before you go off half-cocked, investigate to see how much truth is behind these accusations. “They haven’t fed me in days,” is a frequent lament. Next you will likely hear them say over and over that their personal property has been stolen. It might be true but remember how suspicious the person with dementia mind has become. If you feel something has to be said to the staff, say it. You are the voice for that person. If you feel the need to speak out--do it!

When visiting your loved ones, please do not keep telling yourself, “What difference does it make if I visit them. They won’t remember anyway.”

Your being there will make a positive difference.

Trust me. You might be all they have left. There will be times when you walk in and they don’t remember you. But the times they do will mean the world to both of you.

Group effort in coastal restoration project

Volunteers flooded the park as torrents of rain came down at Linda Pederson Park on May 22, 2018.

Students and helpers beat the Monday blues as they decided to invest their energy in aiding a worthy cause. Volunteers began working as early as nine, that morning.

They removed the

dead oxeye, lantana, rosary pea, and Brazilian pepper seedlings from the parks. Prepping the sites, as they labored through the downpours of the day, the early volunteers decided to cook hot dogs for the second round of helpers.

The various species of coastal upland plants were grown in the Hernando High School’s greenhouse and tended

by Rick Ahrens (FFA) and his dedicated students. They had grown plants such as Muhly Grass, Goldenrod, Sage, and more.

“What we are trying to do,” explained Dr. William (Bill) Lester from the UF/IFAS Hernando County extension, “Is get rid of the bad invasive plants that were killed and replace them with the good native plants that we have been raising.”

Brittany Hall-Scharf, Florida Sea Grant agent (UF/IFAS), also on-site informed us more about the effort.

“The project started at the beginning of the school year when we (IFAS extension office and Hernando High) were awarded the FFA Living to Serve grant.

Our goal was to grow native coastal species to go in place of the invasive Brazilian pepper and lead tree that per county ordinance was being removed.

"Once Cemex Brooksville learned of the project, they also donated some funds to support project,” said HallScharf.

She went on to explain how the beginning of the

growing process was difficult due to Hurricane Irma eradicating part of the greenhouse. Once the greenhouse was fixed, they bought native plants and seeds from local vendors.

“Rick Ahrens’ students were the stars of the show- caring, propagating, and growing the plants. They worked in the greenhouse weekly and dedicated over 550 hours towards this project,” boasted HallScharf.

Mike Singer, an Environmentally Sensitive Lands Specialist, gave a helping hand and also directed volunteers on-site. He had worked alongside the Florida Sea Grant Agency to select these particular planting sites. Singer and Brittany Hall-Scharf were able to narrow it down to 10 sites within Linda Pederson Park.

Overall, it was an extremely productive day for coastal restoration.

There was a total of 21 large trash bags of dead invasive plants which were removed by the volunteers.

The new species were planted into 11 sites between Bayport and Linda Pederson Park, and 500 out of the 700 plants grown in the greenhouse were successfully given new homes.

Springstead High Senior Kyle Manuel finished off his high school career on a positive note. He recently signed with Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL where he’ll continue his exemplary Track and Field career and study exercise science with plans to become a physical therapist.

Kyle was named Springstead’s 2018 United States Marine Corps-Semper Fidelis – Distinguished Male Athlete Award Winner.

Springstead Athletics lists Manuel’s impressive accomplishments: Football – 4 Years in the program and a 2 year Varsity Letterman Helped lead the team to a 7-3 record this past season and to the playoffs last season.

Died of heart failure at Brooksville Healthcare Center. Born in Waynesboro, PA to the late Joseph Brown Shearer and Mary Bertha Hoffman Shearer, she attended Franklin County Schools where, in 1938, she was the only student in county history to achieve a perfect score on the high school mathematics entrance exam. She was an honor graduate of Greencastle High School where she received distinguished achievement awards in French and math. During WWII she was employed

by Letterkenny Ordinance Depot in Chambersburg, PA. She married Irvin Willis Vaughn and lived for a short time in Tampa and Dade City, FL before moving permanently to Brooksville, FL. She was a member of the Baptist faith, and served the First Baptist Church of Brooksville as Superintendant of Sunday School and Principal of Vacation Bible School.

From 1962-1968 she was Assistant County Librarian at Lykes Memorial County Library. After leaving the library, she worked as a teller at First National Bank of Brooksville retiring as Assistant Cashier from what now is known as Bank of America. She had been a cattle rancher since 1967.

For eighteen years she was a volunteer at Lykes Memorial Hospital where she was a “Pink Lady” and Membership Chairperson of the Hospital Volunteers. In 1975 she was awarded the Service to Mankind Award by the Brooksville Sertoma Club.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Willis Vaughn, by her son, Robert Irvin Vaughn, infant grandchild, Jeffrey Andrew Vaughn, two brothers, Harry Donald Kaufman (Waynesboro, PA) and Richard Ernest Shearer (St. Thomas, PA), two sisters, Betty Louise Fittry (Greencastle, PA) and Margaret Irene Reichard (Greencastle. PA). She is survived by one brother, Joseph Wesley Shearer (Greencastle, PA), by her daughters: Dona D. Vaughn (Ron Raines), New York, NY, Faye Stine (Allen), Gainesville, FL, Linda Knaust (Peter), Bermuda Dunes, CA, Carol Flynn (David), Hudson, FL, Cheryl Elliott, Brooksville, FL, ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-greatgrandchild.

Burial took place at Brooksville Cemetery on May 19.

Preventing school massacres is not primarily about guns People who pull the trigger, stab, set bombs or fires, crash cars into others-kill. The blaming of guns for mass killing is an absurd cover up of a society that is going down a path of evil. God’s word and commandments are being shunned in our schools and media. Being perverted, criminal, illegal, hedonistic or a pathological liar is glorified.

Our public schools are dangerous places of indoctrination that produce too many jaded, hyper sexual, alienated, dull youngsters who are confused, frightened, bullies or predators. Most students are only numbers that are not seen as people who have to be nurtured. Instead they are treated by bureaucratic school personnel as prisoners who need to be controlled. This prison mentality is evident in the design of massive buildings that wall them in rather than provide a welcoming, warm, safe environment.

When these youngsters get home, many spend hours watching violent video games, movies and television programing. Our culture of violence has spread to Facebook and Twitter with vicious put downs and cyber bullying.

Often there is no parent or family member to teach moral values and discuss the child’s school issues that may have arisen. Meals with the entire family are no longer even expected. Whatever adult is there is harried to give the children showers and put them to bed with little to no sharing of experiences.

Thus children spend little time with their parents to learn almost anything from them. The negative behavior of the child is usually rationalized away instead of being solved. The underlying anger and pathetic thinking patterns remain.

The child becomes a potential ticking time bomb who uses whatever destructive weapon he has to get his way.

Texas school shooter, Dimitrius Pozountzes posted on Facebook, “born to kill.” He incessantly pursued a girl who rejected him. He went to school bringing not only a shotgun and pistol but also IED bombs to vent his anger. He killed 10 people and injured 13 others at a Santa Fe school. The weapons are not the cause of the outbursts of this disturbed 17 year-olds explosive anti social behavior but instead were directly related to his mental state.

There are many serious destructive cultural forces that must be reversed to return to a more stable, law abiding, God fearing nation. Our Judaic-Christian value system needs to be revived in our schools, churches, and homes. The American people need to influence the media not be passive absorbers of the media’s trashy immoral anti social values.

The abortion pipeline should be dismantled as it demeans and destroys life. Parents need to return to the home as the ultimate authority figure, teacher of their child’s moral values and spiritual trainer, not sit on the sidelines as a self absorbed, immature adolescent. These parents need to do their duty and sacrifice for their children to be functioning adults.

Finally our education system has to be revamped from top to bottom. Schools need to be decentralized to give back control and power of the schools to local leaders. This would provide better utilization of public money to establish smaller, more personal schools. Remembering those who gave all

Butter Corners

A while ago I discovered that Exwork’s brand of butter is cutting corners. I unwrapped a stick of sweet salted and found that I couldn’t use the wrapper to hold it; I had to get my fingers greasy with turning the stick around to place the fully flat side on the dish.

(Usually when I open a new stick I need butter right then for cooking, and if the cornerless side is down, the whole thing will flip up when I try to cut off a pat.)

So, are they saving pennies by not filling the molds? I’m pretty sure that’s what’s going on.

Pennies add up, you know.

(Remember Superman 3 with Christopher Reeve and Richard Pryor?) Butter used to be perfectly cubic in its rectangular form. Now I wonder: where do I cut through the package to get a full tablespoon? And other brands are even worse!

Minute Rice has infuriated me for a few long-agos, now. It used to be that I could indeed add a cup of rice to a cup of boiling water, cover it and take it off the heat, and in five minutes I had perfect rice.

Now I have to continue cooking for those five minutes or more to get the grains tender; otherwise they’ll stick in my esophagus and hurt like I’m having a heart attack. What manu-

Lately I’ve noticed that my favorite bread has a lot more holes.

Are they using the same amount of yeast but less flour? I buttered a slice of their toast last week and discovered that some of it had drained through and coated the plate with what looked like yellow raindrops.

I think stockholders have too much influence concerning quality.

Peaches taste like pulp cardboard, celery has veins you could twist into rope,

and the edges of poptarts are getting wider with less filling. Thick-cut bacon is actually construction paper thin and shrinks to a brittle bit of dark brown in the

middle of the plate when cooked according to the instructions for the microwave. (Bacon is always best cooked slowly, anyway, in a frying pan with constant attention.) Et al ad nauseam.

The reason all this comes to mind is because the other day I replaced an outlet in my wife’s art room, and I decided to buy everything new. I cut the old wires, stripped the ends of insulation, wrestled them into the new sockets, removed the link for the split circuit, secured the receptacle with the two screws, and promptly cracked the new cover plate with one too many turns of the screwdriver. (I’m told it’s been that way for years, but I didn’t know, and so I tossed the old plate the day before in preparation.) So besides plastic replacing wood and metal, flimsy plastic is now replacing sturdy plastic?

The most daily example of that is water bottles You can’t grip them anymore.

You have to hold them by letting the weight of the thing hang from your fingerprints, otherwise you’ll squeeze the bottle and squish water up through your nose.

But mainly right now, butter is what really gets my jowls in a grind.

The gun control movement is nothing more than a ridiculous frontal attack on the Second Amendment. Remove all the guns and the same criminals will still find a way to kill innocent people.

The current out-of-control stabbings in London, IEDs and suicide bombers throughout the Middle East, mass murder by vehicle, chemical attacks and many other innovations accomplish mass killings without a gun.

The simplistic and naïve thought process of public school adolescents believing guns are the main

However, when so-called sophisticated, progressive politicians and their media cohorts proclaim this idea, there has to be another reason. They are attempting to persuade the American people that our guns should be confiscated by selecting certain violent incidents to highlight while burying others. The Dimitrios- Texas incident did not fit their narrative as he had many different deadly weapons and no semi-automatic rifle. He was a jilted adolescent who was not on anyone’s radar. His violent explosive behavior could not be easily attributed

to guns. Furthermore he came from a community and state where guns are a necessary and normal part of life for protection and food. There would be little to no community support for the illogical indictment that guns cause these incidents. This story was buried.

The magic pill of abolishing the Second Amendment will do nothing to lower mass killings but will do everything to grease the skids for elevating a dictatorship or a full blown totalitarian nation. Remember what happened in Venezuela 2012 when Chavez banned private gun ownership.

Memorial means to “remember” and every year on the last Monday in May, we honor those who sacrificed their lives in the line of active military service. On Memorial Day we stop and pay our respect to the ones who were willing to stand in the gap between freedom and tyranny! The First Amendment was not only signed into existence with ink but with the blood of over 1.1 million Americans that have died in U.S. wars along with many more that have suffered from physical and mental difficulties. Over the years, numerous families have suffered loss from war including my own and we have a deep appreciation for the men and women that have served to protect our country.

My uncle, Kenny Maye was killed in Korea and I have his tags, casket flag and a rare picture of him. He was only 20 years old in 1950 and his body was never found.

Sadly, his existence is nearly unknown and I often wonder about the life he could have had.

We are only a few miles from Camp Nelson National Cemetery and from the highway you can see many rows of the over twelve thousand perfectly lined white marble tombstones. At times I’ve often driven past without hardly thinking about how each of these individuals at one time or another accepted the call of duty. And what is that call? To defend and protect our liberties - whatever the cost! Each one of those brave soldiers was willing to give their life for their country and many did. It is said - “All gave some and some gave all.” Truly, the cost of freedom is beyond the imagination. In March 1775, Patrick Henry said, “I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death.” I am convinced this is the heart cry of all the heroes that have given their lives for our country.

Here is a story about a World War II hero whose name was Lieutenant Commander Butch O’Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific and on February 20, 1942 his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader gave him a direct order for him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back. As he was returning to the ship he saw something that turned his blood cold. A squadron of Japanese aircraft were speeding their way toward the aircraft carrier which was defenseless. He couldn’t reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet, So, there was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert their attention away from the ship.

Laying aside all thoughts of this probably being his last moments, he aggressively dove into the formation of Japanese planes.

Airborne Cinematographer David Alan Arnold made his start in Hernando County

Hernando County has produced a number of great people who have gone on to do great things.

Airborne Cinematographer David Alan Arnold started out in Hernando County, graduating from Hernando High in 1990.

He went on to become an Airborne Cinematographer for major television events including The Amazing Race, The World Series and Survivor. He even won an Emmy for his work with the Deadliest Catch.

He started his Hollywood career with a broom in his hand. He rose from there to become a 'goto' Airborne Cinematographer. David tells this tale and others in his new book.

On May 22, 2018, David released a book entitled “Help From Above,” which chronicles his fight against organized crime.

He puts his aerial photography skills to use giving back to the community.

Auxiliary Supports K-9 Partners for Patriots American Legion Auxiliary, Charles E. Murray Unit 186 in Brooksville recently presented Mary Peter, founder and CEO of K-9 Partners for Patriots with a check for $250.00, as well as Thank You For Your Service mugs to members of their current training class.

K-9 Partners for Patriots mission is to give veterans and active military a second chance at life by honoring and empowering those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and Military Sexual Trauma through the experience of training and caring for their own service dog.

then another. O’Hare was weaving in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent. However – he did not stop there. He continued the assault, diving at the fighters, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible.

Suddenly, the Japanese squadron headed off in another direction which was nothing less than a miracle. Deeply relieved, Butch O’Hare and his damaged plane somehow made

it back to the carrier.

Upon arrival, the film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale.

It clearly revealed his daring attempt to protect his fleet.

He had in fact destroyed five enemy aircraft. For this heroic act Butch became the Navy’s first Ace of World War II, and the first Naval aviator to win the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Sadly, a year later Mr. O’Hare was killed in another aerial battle at the age of 29.

His hometown would not allow the memory of this war hero to fade, and today the O’Hare International Airport in Chicago is named as an honor to the courage of this brave man.

All proceeds will benefit NAMI Hernando and Vincent Academy Adventure Coast.
