The Florida Press Association is the preeminent newspaper organization in the state.

Meet Sarah Nachin, one busy Hernando Sun features writer and author of several published books.

Sarah is a freelance writer and writes articles for our newspaper, the Hernando Sun. She also writes for a weekly newspaper in upstate New York and various magazines.

But her real passion in life is writing books and traveling. Her latest book is “The Odyssey of Clyde the Camel,” that she describes as a humorous travelogue as well as including a few fantasy elements.

“It's based on a trip I took to Europe in 2014,” said Sarah, “and it's told through the eyes of a stuffed camel that I acquired along the way.”

nlike those who braved the rain to watch the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs last Saturday, folks who attended NAMI Hernando's Derby Day event at Chinsegut Hill were blessed with beautiful weather. The purpose was to raise money for the various goals and programs of this grassroots organization.

Sharks survive brutal 3rd inning en route to another title

In the last three seasons of high school baseball in Hernando County, two teams have stood out: The Nature Coast Sharks and the Hernando High Leopards.

The two schools have managed to scratch and claw their way to meeting up in district play the last two seasons, facing off for the district championship.

Without the yellow tape, no one would suspect that a fire ravaged the inside of the popular Little Lady Cafe in Downtown Brooksville on Saturday May 5, 2018. The electrical fire occured after closing time and began behind a cooler. The fire did serious damage and owner Rory Steele will need to rebuild.

Steele has been operating the restaurant for over two years now.

On social media, Steele thanked the numerous community members who have reached out to her and remarked, “...the cafe has severe damage and we will need sometime to rebuild, but we will rebuild.

Right now my head is just spinning and my heart is in awe. Brooksville is an amazingly strong and supportive community, I am beyond blessed to be a part of this and call it home. I haven't yet the chance to answer or reply to everyone, but I am not ignoring anyone either, again just wrapping my head around it all. Again, thank you to each and everyone of you. Little Lady Cafe will rebuild, we are Brooksville strong.”

She also thanked the first responders, “Thank you to all the first responders who answered the call and fearlessly entered the building, not knowing what was inside. Your bravery, strength, professionalism is greatly appreciated.”

On May 8, 2018 the Hernando County Board of County Commissioners recognized prominent local doctor, Pariksith Singh M.D. with a resolution which reads in part: “WHEREAS, PARIKSITH SINGH, M.D., is board certified in Internal Medicine.

He received his medical education in India and completed his residency in New York. Upon completion of his residency, DR. PARIKSITH SINGH relocated with his family to Florida and worked for several years before establishing Access Health Care, LLC, in 2001; and WHEREAS, Access Health Care has more than 850 employees, thus contributing a positive economic impact on our community; and WHEREAS, in 2017, Oak Hill Hospital recognized DR. PARIKSITH SINGH as its Frist Humanitarian Physician, an award which honors outstanding individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities, as well as recognizing individuals whose daily dedication and caregiving epitomize the highest standards of quality and

about sound gardening practices, nutrition and caring for the environment; and WHEREAS, DR. PARIKSITH SINGH established the Access Enrichment Center for the benefit of his patients.

The Access Enrichment Center not only provides educational material, but also recreational activities, support groups, lectures and presentations; and WHEREAS, DR. PARIKSITH SINGH supports various local non-profit organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project, People Helping People, Disabled American Veterans, Crescent Community Clinic, neighborhood schools and many indigents in the community...”

In response to the resolution Dr. Singh commented, “I came here 22 years ago and was allowed to grow and thrive. This is something beautiful about our country. It allows

people to move from other countries and succeed. I don’t know of any other country, any other community that will allow this…”

Dr. Singh thanked and recognized his wife and partner Dr. Scunziano remarking, “Without her this would not have happened.”

He continued, “What we have tried to do over the last few years is do things locally. Developed our own software, created our own HMO, created our own ACO, patient centered medical homes. All this can be done here. We don’t need to go to Silicon Valley. We don’t have to run to New York. All this talent development, skill development we can do here. We have the smarts… we just have to believe in ourselves. Each community can have its own resources...”

Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of educating our children through agricultural pursuits.

“We need things for our children to educate them- to have them feel the soil again. Go to the gardens- go and grow plants- not spend time on the x boxes and the Wiis.

This is something we have to develop for our own community,” he said.

HCSO ARREST SUMMARIES Refused to return her Hertz Rental

EVERHART, NANCY ELIZABETH YOB: 1966 ALIAS: GOD CHARGES: FAIL TO REDELIVER HIRED VEH Arrested at 05/04/2018 13:25 7048 OBERON AVE, SPRING HILL Arrest Summary: "On 05/04/2018, at approximately 1150 hours, I responded to 7200 Broad Street in reference to a stolen vehicle.

I made contact with Scott Leddy, the sales manager for Hertz Rental Car. Scott advised that on 02/15/2018 the defendant, Nancy Everhart, rented (rental # 374621855) a gray in color 2017 Nissan Versa, bearing Florida tag #005YUK (VIN 3N1CN7AP4HL892211). Scott advised the date due of the rental return was 03/20/2018 originally, however, the vehicle was not returned.

Scott advised that numerous attempts were made to contact the defendant in reference to the vehicle, in which during the month of March, she continuously advised that she would be returning the vehicle shortly. Scott further advised after the vehicle was not returned a certified letter, dated as 04/20/2018 (Certified USPS Mail # 9214890136280200490169), was sent to the defendant's

listed address of 7048 Oberon Avenue, Spring Hill, Florida, on a company letterhead, demanding the above mentioned rental vehicle be immediately returned to the address of 7200 Broad Street or the nearest Hertz Rental car company. Scott advised that a repossession service was hired in order to retrieve the vehicle, which also yielded negative results for locating the vehicle. Scott informed me that due to exhausting all available resources, Hertz Rental Car now wished to report the vehicle as stolen.

Scott completed an Affidavit of Stolen Vehicle.

At that time, Deputy Barreto responded to the defendant’s last known address of 7048 Oberon Avenue, at which time he located the gray Nissan Versa bearing Florida tag 005YUK to be sitting in the driveway. Deputy Barreto then made contact with the defendant, who was detained.

Upon making contact with the defendant, she spontaneously stated, “I was going to bring it back eventually.” Upon reading the defendant her Miranda rights, she elected not to speak with me in reference to the incident.

The defendant was then placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident.

The defendant was charged with 1 count of failure to redeliver hired vehicle. The defendant was issued a bond amount of $5,000.00 and given a court date of 05/29/2018 at 1315 hours in Courtroom D of the Hernando County Courthouse."

She asked her roommate, Michael Cohen, the Defendant, if he kicked in her door. Defendant admitted to her he did kick it in and told her to get her “stuff” out. Defendant began yelling at Tonya Patterson telling her he will kill her. Victim fixed her door and the Defendant kicked it in again.

At approximately 20:00 hrs., Defendant threatened the victim, Tonya Patterson, with a long walking stick (approximately 3 ft. long, 3⁄4” round), which he was waving and swinging it at her while he told her he would kill her. The Defendant threatened to kill Tonya Patterson if she did not leave the house Defendant told her, “You better not go to sleep”.

Defendant was taken into custody and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center without incident.

Defendant was assigned a court date to appear before the Honorable Daniel Merritt Jr. in Courtroom “D” on May 29, 2018 at 1:15 p.m."

ROGERS-WOLSKY, CALEB SCOTT YOB: 1992 CHARGES: POSSESSION OF OXYCODONE, POSS OF MARIJUANA Arrested at 05/04/2018 22:28 DELTONA BLVD & HARTLEY RD, SPRING HILL Arrest Summary: "On 5/4/18, contact was made with the defendant, Caleb Rogers-Wolsky, through a traffic stop conducted at the intersection of Deltona Blvd and Hartley Rd in Spring Hill.

Upon speaking with the defendant, Michael Barnes, and David Pepe (David and Michael were passengers in the defendant’s vehicle), this affiant was able to detect a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Due to the defendant’s vehicle emitting the smell of marijuana, this affiant conducted a search of the defendant, Michael, David, and the defendant’s vehicle. A search of the defendant’s vehicle revealed a small bag of a green, leafy substance (that field tested positive for THC) behind the center console.

The defendant stated that the “weed” belonged to him.

Through a secondary search of the defendant, a small, white pill with “512” imbedded on it was discovered in the defendant’s right pocket. When asking the defendant what it was, he stated, “I don’t know,” and “I can’t believe this is happening!” A search through drugs.com identified the pill as Oxycodone (classified as a schedule two controlled substance).

The green, leafy substance was weighed at the jail and weighed a total amount of 3.5 grams. The green, leafy substance was weighed on an Ohaus scale (model #: C305-S, serial #: 47871).

The defendant was charged for the above offenses and issued a court date for 5/29/18, in Room D, of the Hernando County Courthouse. The defendant was issued a total bond of $3,000."

“I want to quit drugs but I took them to see if I still wanted to do it.”

EVON, MANDY MARIE YOB: 1983 CHARGES: POSS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSESSION DRUG PARAPHERNALIA Arrested at 05/05/2018 09:34 4091 MONONA AVE, SPRING HILL Arrest Summary: "On 5/4/18, at 1605 hours, I responded to the residence at 4091 Monona Avenue and made contact with Janet Batson in reference to the narcotics call.

Contact was made with Janet Batson who stated that she found the defendant, Mandy Evon, passed out in the garage holding a “small bag of meth”. Janet took photographs of the defendant before she removed the clear plastic baggy containing a white crystal like substance to “see what it was” out of the defendant's hands. Photographs were placed into evidence. Janet completed a sworn written statement.

Contact was made with Fire Rescue Technician, Scott Burd, who advised me that the clear plastic baggy with the crystal like substance was lying next to the defendant when they arrived on scene.

After an on scene medical evaluation, another Fire Rescue Technician, Kenny Easton, removed a syringe, containing a clear liquid, from the left portion of the defendant’s bra. Scott Burd completed a sworn written statement.

I utilized the Narco test kit 7623 and field tested the crystal like substance and the syringe containing the unknown clear liquid which showed a positive indication for the presence of methamphetamine. The crystal like substance weighed a total of .4 grams in the clear plastic baggie. No arrest was made due to the defendant being admitted to Oak Hill Hospital.

On 5/5/18, at 0923 hours, I responded to the residence at 4091 Monona Avenue and made contact with the defendant. When I asked the defendant about the incident that took place on 5/4/18, the defendant replied, “I want to quit drugs but I took them to see if I still wanted to do it.” When I asked where the defendant got the meth she replied, “I got it from an acquaintance of mine.” When I asked the defendant if she injected the meth she replied, “In my left arm, maybe my right arm, actually I don’t know.”

The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident. A court date was given of 5/29/2018 at 1315 hours in Courtroom D, and a bond of $3,000.00."

EVON, MANDY MARIE YOB: 1983 CHARGES: BATTERY Arrested at 05/05/2018 19:30 16425 SPRING HILL DR, BROOKSVILLE Arrest Summary: "On 05/04/2018, I responded to the residence located at 4091 Monona Avenue, Spring Hill, Florida in reference to a battery.

Upon arrival, I made contact with Janet Batson who advised that the defendant, Mandy Evon, had battered her after a verbal argument. Janet advised that the defendant had also thrown a green porcelain plate at her husband, Bobby Batson, which hit his right arm. Janet had a 4 inch red in color scratch on the right side of her collarbone which was consistent with her statement.

Contact was made with Bobby who corroborated Janet’s statement.

Contact was made with Annette Rodriguez who witnessed the incident and corroborated Janet’s statement.

Contact was also made with Angelina Cintron who witnessed the incident and corroborated Janet’s statement.

Contact was later made with the defendant at the Hernando County Jail, post Miranda, who advised that everything was normal when a verbal altercation ensued which became physical. The defendant advised that she was attacked

by Janet first and denied ever attempting to take or break Janet's telephone. The defendant did advise that she could have possibly thrown something but could not recall all that had happened during the incident.

The defendant was placed under arrest and given the court date of 06/01/2018, at 0900 hours, in Courtroom "C." The defendant is currently being held on a total bond of $2,000.00 ($1,000.00 per count.)"

ST CLAIR, TIMOTHY DEAN YOB: 1960 CHARGES: BATTERY DETENTION COMMIT STAFF Arrested at 05/05/2018 23:00 16425 SPRING HILL DR, BROOKSVILLE Arrest Summary: "On

St. Clair 05/05/2018 at approximately 22:20 hours, I responded to the Hernando County Jail in reference to a battery that already occurred. Upon arrival, contact was made Sergeant Mike Paolella who advised at approximately 04:30 hours this morning, Deputy Robert Zasimovitch was battered by inmate/defendant Timothy St Clair while he was instructing all inmates to come out of their cells for their morning meal. The defendant refused verbal orders by Deputy R. Zasimovitch to get off his bunk bed, and became verbally abusive by telling Deputy R.Zasmovitch to “Get the f*ck out of his face.”

The defendant then got up from his bunk and Deputy R.Zasimovitch escorted him out of the cell. While escorting him out of his cell, the defendant tried to turn away from Deputy R.Zasimovitch and then the defendant turned and swung his right hand, with a closed fist, making contact with Deputy R. Zasimovitch’s left arm on the inside of his elbow.

The incident was witnessed

by Deputy Mark Cervone who assisted Deputy R. Zasimovitch. Deputy M. Cervone witnessed Deputy R. Zasimovitch enter the defendant's cell and instruct him to exit the cell for his morning meal; however, the defendant became argumentative. When the defendant was walking out of his cell being escorted

by Deputy R. Zasimovitch, he then quickly spun around swinging his arm and striking Deputy R. Zasimovitch’s left arm between his forearm and bicep.

Video surveillance footage of the incident did reveal the defendant turning around while being escorted out of his cell and striking Deputy R. Zasimovitch in the left arm.

The defendant was already in custody at the Hernando County Jail and scheduled a court date to appear in courtroom D of the Hernando County Court House in Brooksville, Florida on 05/29/2018 at 13:15 hours."

BROWN, NICHOLAS AARON YOB: 1995 CHARGES: POSSES OF FIREARM BY FELON Arrested at 05/06/2018 06:41 1950 E JEFFERSON ST, BROOKSVILLE Arrest Summary: "On 05/06/18 the Sheriff’s Office responded to 26487 Soult Road, Brooksville, after the defendant and his fiancée, Amber Murwin, engaged in an argument. The defendant left the residence before law enforcement arrived. When speaking with Amber, she stated her Ruger LC .380 was missing from the bedroom closet after the argument and the defendant had told her he moved it to the shed that is located outside on the same property. Deputies found the firearm in the shed inside of a box. Contact was later made with the defendant at the Speedway gas station located at 1950 E Jefferson Street,

Brooksville, in Hernando County. The defendant, post Miranda, admitted to moving the firearm from the bedroom closet to the outdoor shed, but could not remember where he placed it inside the shed. The defendant stated he was in fear of Amber and advised he moved it because his Amber was acting “differently” and had threatened to retrieve it from the closet if he did not leave the residence. The defendant described the firearm he moved as a Ruger LC .380, the same firearm found inside the shed that Amber usually keeps in the bedroom closet.

The defendant is a convicted felon who has not had his firearm rights restored. On 11122014 the defendant was adjudicated guilty for Burglary and Grand Theft in Palm Beach County. While speaking with the defendant, he stated he quickly moved the firearm knowing he was not allowed to have it in his procession.

The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident and held on a $10,000 bond.

During that time, there were several items of brand new clothing with tags and several broken anti-theft devices inside the vehicle, giving the impression they were probably stolen during retail thefts.

Jamie was eventually arrested for drug possession charges under case # 2018-13849.

There was a women's shoe, tan in color inside the vehicle. Post Miranda, Jamie confessed to stealing the shoe in question from Payless on 05/03/2018.

I made contact with the assistant manager at the Payless located at 1533 Commercial Way, located within Hernando County, who confirmed the shoe in question was stolen from that store on 05/03/2018.

The value of the stolen pair of shoes is $39.99.

A check of Jamie’s criminal history revealed she has prior theft convictions on 05/30/2017, 05/09/2016, 06/23/2016, 06/29/2016, and 05/06/2014, making this case a felony.

On 05/06/2018, I responded to the Hernando County Detention Center, where Jamie was still in-custody for the aforementioned charges, and charged her with Felony Petit Theft. Bond was set at $2,000.00."

Funding approved for Bayport Pier, Pine Island observation deck and Weeki Wachee River kayak pullout LISA MACNEIL STAFF WRITER

At the May 8, 2018 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting, the board voted unanimously to approve funding from the Quality Of Life fund to replace the Bayport Pier, fix the Pine Island Observation Deck and construct a service road for a kayak pull-out area two miles from the headspring, where Flohana and Boating in Florida conduct commercial kayak-rental businesses.

Parks and Recreation Manager Harry Johnson presented to the board the three projects, with the kayak pull-out point being a topic of heavy discussion lately due to overcrowding on the Weeki Wachee River. Currently, the ride from the headspring to Rogers Park is 5.5 miles, and with the state limitation of 70 kayakers leaving the headspring per hour, there are still hundreds of kayaks on the river making their way to Roger’s Park. The pull-out point two miles downriver is expected to alleviate the congestion.

The Bayport Pier was damaged by Hurricane Hermine in 2016 and needs to be replaced. According to Johnson, the difference after using Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds will be $109,825.44. Deputy County Administrator Jeff Rogers explained that FEMA is expected to reimburse this amount at a later date, however there is a possibility that FEMA may not approve all expenses, and that Parks and Recreation is requesting that the Quality of Life Fund absorb any overage.

The commission voted in Jan. of 2017 to re-construct the Bayport Pier with funding from the ESL fund.

Chairman Steve Champion recognized the pier as being another long-running and often discussed topic, and asked how long the replacement project is expected to take after funding is in place. Rogers briefly explained the process leading to the incoming bids, and expects the pier to be open to the public this fall.

The Pine Island Observation Deck was also damaged during Hurricane Hermine, and following the same process for bids and obtaining funds from FEMA, Johnson requested $16,044.19. FEMA’s engineers appraised the repair

At the regular Brooksville City Council meeting on May 7, 2018, the council voted 3-2 to approve amendments to the future land use map, and elements of the city’s Comprehensive Plan regarding a 440 acre property to be zoned Planned Development Project (PDP), designated as the MilkA-Way Farms Mixed Use Development District (MFMUDD).

The sprawling property with scattered live oaks, was once a dairy farm.

The now dilapidated structure off of 41 was where they sold animal feed to the public.

The amendment would allow for 999 dwelling units and 50,000 square feet of non-residential floor space, to consist of multi-use trails and recreational areas.

The property’s southwest corner is east of Broad Street and north of Croom Road. Its current designation is

When Johnson questioned the large discrepancy, he was told by FEMA to collect more bids, which came in with higher estimates.

First to comment on the FEMA estimate, Commissioner John Allocco said, “It’s amazing that FEMA would think you could do it for eight grand… you can’t even buy a shed from Home Depot for eight grand.”

Commissioner Champion questioned the necessity of the observation deck, which Johnson acknowledged does subtract “beach space” from an already small beach. However, Johnson reported that the deck had been used frequently for sunset viewing, weddings, and promoted local tourism. Commissioner Wayne Dukes added that the unseen portion of the photo shown was “nothing but rocks,” and that the sand on the side of the walkway to the deck was placed by the county. Dukes suggested that perhaps the county reach out to local firms to sponsor the observation deck in return for placing the firm’s signage on the finished deck.

The service road planned for the Weeki Wachee River take-out point is an estimated 0.66 mile stretch which is estimated to cost $55,620. The county has been working with state Sensitive Lands groups and the Department of Public Works (DPW) to facilitate the project which Champion called “a huge win for everyone involved.”

According to Johnson, the early take-out will result in a 40% reduction in kayaks in the river beyond that point, and landing at Roger’s Park.

She continued, “Why can’t the Board save the $55,000 and at the next vendor contract renewal (this year) simply limit the numbers of commercial activity at Rogers Park?

You have the authority to control the amount of commercial activity at your parks without costing your tax payers. If you do decide to go ahead and fund this, would there be a cap implemented at Rogers Park on commercial activity so you can be ensured your residents and visitors can once again use the public kayak ramp at the county park? Currently, up to 70 commercial rental vessels per hour are authorized to be taken out from the one and only public kayak ramp. Why agree to this unless an immediate contract addendum with Guest Services can take place specifying that a maximum of 42 kayaks per hour will be retrieved from Rogers Park (that is 40% of 70)?”

Deputy Administrator Jeff Rogers replied, “For the upstream Kayak removal location on the Weeki Wachee River this is intended to remove the numbers of Kayakers that travel down the entire length of the river, thus shortening the amount of time the kayakers are using the resource. As you are aware, the 4-5 hour trip currently is too long for many users to stay in their kayaks. Upon getting out of the kayaks damage is done to the vegetation in the river and on the surrounding properties. I be-

lieve more damage is done to the resource from the users that exit their kayaks than just more kayakers traveling down the river.

However, the carrying capacity study that the BOCC and SWFWMD approved for funding will provide us factual data in the future on the best practices.

I will suggest to the BOCC tomorrow the following Policy numbers be considered for use of the funding: 4. Funds will be used to improve resource based recreation. Kayaking is a Passive Recreation as listed in the Hernando County Management Plan for Linda Pederson Preserve.

While I agree the addition of a kayak removal location is a structural enhancement to the river and not the desire along the river, the goal of limiting the degradation of the river by decreasing the amount of time kayakers are on the river and leaving their kayaks hopefully will result in a net gain for the river.

6. The Quality of Life fund may be considered for use to further state and federal projects or programs, designated under the ESL program, that are designated to protect, conserve, and enhance environmental resources.

I believe FDEP is working to conserve the resource of the Weeki Wachee River, and our partnership will help achieve this goal.

You have concern that we might spend this funding and the kayakers will still only use Rogers Park. While, I agree that is a possibility, I think it is a minimal risk to try and improve the quality of life for our citizens and visitors that want to enjoy Rogers Park and the Weeki Wachee river. We can’t succeed or fail if we do not try.”

Commercial, Residential, Rural and Conservation (Hernando County). The irregularly-shaped footprint spans as far east as Javelin Road, and north to unincorporated areas near Jacobsen Road.

The stated 999 dwelling units was decided upon to avoid the designation of Development Regional Impact (DRI). A DRI designation would come with additional changes to the Comprehensive Plan, and a more in-depth rezoning process required by the state. A conceptual map showing the intended area of homes, parks and other planned areas was not shown during the May 7th meeting, but is expected in future meetings. The residential and other building areas are planned for the northwest section of the property.

City Planner Steve Gouldman began the presentation to the council, describing the area and intended

changes. Before development begins, area roadways and traffic will be studied, at the developer’s expense.

A variety of city and county parks are near the property, and parks are to be built into the plan as well. Problems exist with the property being within an A / E flood zone. To remedy this, the developer will need to meet Southwest Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requirements.

The Hernando County School Board calculates that the new plan will generate 412 students, though an age and grade breakdown wasn’t available, Brooksville Elementary would be over capacity, and the developer would need to resolve the overage.

$1.2 million for Hernando Beach Fire Station

The Hernando Beach Fire Rescue Station #6 will be receiving a $1.2 million construction grant from the state for a renovation project.

The grant is a result of appropriations made by the Florida Legislature during the 2018 session to support local fire departments. It must be distributed during the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

The grant period begins July 1, 2018 and will be allocated through reimbursement.

Station #6 in Hernando Beach is the former volunteer fire department station. After the county terminated the contract with the volunteer department in February 2017 for mismanagement, county Fire Rescue took over the facility. In August 2017, the county department unveiled renovations they completed at Station #6, with the help of local businesses and community members. Chief Scott Hechler remarked at the time, “The community came together not only to donate the supplies, but also donate their time and show their pride in the community. The outpouring of … support from the community has been amazing…”

With the large influx of funding for their firehouse, Hernando Beach will have a state of the art facility. Currently the station consists of two 2500 square foot bays- one built in 1981 and the other in 2011. The 1981 structure is valued at $62,936 by the property appraiser, while the 2011 structure is valued at $108,490.

Extra commercial grade features are valued at $31,600.

According to Don Lacey, Senior Vice President with Coastal Engineering, the city can install crosswalks on the property side, adjacent to the state road, as well as install markings and crosswalks.

The area, which Lacey describes as an “interesting and challenging piece of property,” includes wetlands, as well as a large area of floodplain.

Council Member Joe Bernardini was most concerned about the prudence of building homes in such an area, when the city has already seen problems with areas such as Candlelight and Cloverleaf -- the latter requiring Humvees to reach residents in distress after hurricane flooding.

Bernardini also cited several areas of congestion which would worsen with added traffic.

Lacey responded that the flood-prone areas can be improved with development, and the traffic problems can also be addressed.

The Planning and Zoning Board voted unanimously to go forward with the amendment, and the City Council passed the ordinance 3-2, with Council Member Joe Bernardini and Mayor Betty Erhard voting nay.

Oak Hill Hospital Holds Organ Donor Flag Raising Ceremony and Prayer Memorial Service Oak Hill Hospital held an organ donor flag raising ceremony and prayer memorial service at the South Tower main entrance flag pole.

Carlos Cardona, BSN, RN, CCRN, Director of Clinical Excellence and Project Management welcomed the group. Mr. Cardona, as the leader of the organ donation program at Oak Hill Hospital, explained the organ donation process and the impact organ donation has on our community. In addition to the raising of the flag, Rev. Emory Ailes, a LifeLink of Florida volunteer, spoke about his experience as a kidney recipient from a living donor in 2010.

The gopher tortoise is seen as a keystone species because it digs burrows that provide shelter for at least 360 other animal species.

They are threatened by predation and habitat destruction. The gopher tortoise is a representative of the genus Gopherus, which contains the only tortoises native to North America. Gopher tortoises are a federally protected species. Current Florida state regulations clearly indicate that it is illegal to handle or disturb gopher tortoises or to bother their burrows.

White cake mix (prepare as directions) ¼ cup Sugar 1 Tub whipped cream (size your choice) Med size strawberries (whole) 1 ½ cups strawberries (finely diced)

Directions

Use shot glasses or any glass cup depending on what size you would like.

Cut cake in ½ , you could wrap other half and freeze for later use or use all depending size of glass.

MUD ENDEAVOUR 10 SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2018 AT 9 AM TO 1 PM WILDLIFE LANE, BROOKSVILLE The birth place of Mud Endeavor, this unique location in the Central Florida area gives us extreme terrain that is taboo to Florida’s topography. With 100 foot elevation changes, this run brings a whole new aspect to mud obstacle course racing. It started in 2012 when Mud Endeavor launched our very first mud run here at this location. Since then, things have just taken off. In 2018, we are returning to our favorite place with an entirely new course layout. It will be as if we have never been here before.

This location has access to lots of water, so therefore we can make lots of mud, so much mud, in fact, that often shoes become victim to the unforgiving suction. And the best part is that friends and family can watch you trudge through all this mud! Because this property is an old dirt mine, the spectator viewing area is second to none with more than 75 percent of the course totally visible.

Spectators are able to stand on the sidelines, look down onto the course, and cheer on their favorite runner while he or she tests their limits on the challenging hill climbs, 100 foot water slides and various other demanding obstacles.

It's May 1, 2018, a great day to play ball here at Nature Coast High School. The sun is shining and the breeze feels just right. But, it might be a problem for the batters, they will have to hit right into the wind. There is a moment of silence for the shooting victims and families of the Stoneman Douglas High School February 14, 2018 shooting. Hats off for the National Anthem and now they are ready to play ball!!

Central High Schools take on Hudson High School today for a neutral playoff game. The Bears will take the field first, pitcher warms up as the Cobra batter waits on deck. Alright here we go, batter up!!

The scoring started early for both teams. In the top of the first inning, senior Anthony Urso laced a single and then scored on a double by sophomore third baseman Connor Morgan. Not wanting to be outdone, following an opening walk by Duphily to senior center fielder Zach Funkhouser, the undisputed team MVP for the Sharks, J.P. Gates, rocketed the third offering to him out to dead center for a two-run homer. When asked later about what he saw, Gates replied “The pitch was a fastball, low and away, but the way I swung the bat resulted in the point of contact being right on the barrel.”

Springstead Spring Football Close Up

With prep spring football in its third week into practices throughout the state of Florida, we take a closer look at each of Hernando County’s five programs in the weeks leading into the spring games. The next team we take a look at is Springstead, which heads into its sixth season under the watch of head coach Mike Garofano. The Eagles finished 6-3 last season with Garofano at the helm and just narrowly missed out on reaching the postseason. The Eagles head into the spring under Garofano hoping to fine tune one of the top rushing attacks around and solidifying an already impressive stable of running backs. We now take a closer look at

Take your pick Is it a little crowded in Springstead's backfield?

Not a bad problem to have for Garofano and his staff, with backs like Nathan Sims and Adrian Fribley lining up against opposing defenses. Both were key components to the Eagles' offense in the fall and should see their respective workloads increase.

Max O'Rourke should see plenty of time at the quarterback position, even though Sims showed signs of being able to play the position on an every down basis. Though Randy Morgan graduated, best believe Springstead still has one of the better backfields around.

Motivation heavy this spring No team felt the impact

of the FHSAA’s new playoff format like Springstead did in 2017. After finishing as the runner-up to New Port Richey Mitchell in Class 6A, District 6, the Eagles were left out in the cold of not qualifying for the Class 6A postseason. The importance of winning the district is now more important than ever, with that being the only way to guarantee a berth in the postseason.

It should be no surprise that the Eagles will have a chip on their shoulders all throughout the spring and heading into summer workouts. If there’s one thing not lacking, motivation should be it.

Cabrera controlling the middle Springstead linebacker Adrian Cabrera came onto the prep football scene in 2017 as a sophomore on a mission. Cabrera was one of the top linebackers in Hernando County, racking up 114 tackles playing in the middle and he will be counted on once again to make sure runners think twice before running up the middle. At 6-foot, 200-plus pounds, Cabrera has the ideal size at his position along with good speed and tackling ability. He’ll head up a defensive unit that compiled 17 sacks and seven interceptions last fall. The Eagles found themselves a bonafide three-year varsity starter in Cabrera.

Weeki Wachee finished 3-7 in Gray’s first season at the helm and introduced a fast style of play from the spread offense. The Hornets go into their second spring under Gray and the team has higher goals and expectations this spring heading into the summer and beyond. We take a closer look at Weeki Wachee.

Offense on the rise Weeki Wachee's offense was one of the top yard gaining units in all of Hernando County, averaging around 350 yards per game. Much of that was surrounded around the talents of quarterback Vaughn Sykora, who heads into his junior campaign. Sykora had a solid 2017 season throwing the football, completing 53 of 122 pass attempts for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He'll need to cut down on his interceptions (17) if the Hornets look to take the next step as a unit.

Sykora will need to find a new favorite target in the passing game, with Shaun Young graduating.

Lean on Class If there's anyone just as important as Sykora is to the offense, its running back Sebastian Class. The quick running back totaled just over 1,400 yards of offense in 2017 and proved he can take on the workload. The Hornets lose Diante Thomas on offense, whom served as a switch back to Class, but the senior should have no problems carrying more of the load offensively on his shoulders. by SUE QUIGLEY People all around the world, including America, have enjoyed a long-lasting fascination, or perhaps obsession with the British royal family. And it shows no sign of fading.

The latest wave of excitement is about Prince Harry's upcoming wedding on May 19 to actress Meghan Markle.

Of course, she's not the first American to marry into the British royal family.

Who can forget Queen Elizabeth II's uncle, King Edward VIII who abdicated the throne in December 1936 so he could marry American twice-divorced Wallis Simpson — something totally unacceptable at the time.

It's not as if Markle is breaking new ground. Like Simpson, Markle is American and a divorcée (only once) but this many years on, it hasn’t stopped her being accepted as a suitable partner for Harry.

What was it the Queen said? “I’m delighted.”

Part of America’s attraction of the Royals is the pageantry and centuries-old traditions, unlike anything in the US unless one counts the Kennedy family as the closest thing to royalty.

This was the Hernando Sun's first entry into the Weekly Newspaper Contest. As a three year old newspaper we decided to give it a try. We submitted several entries and were recognized with awards in two categories.

The Hernando Sun weekly newspaper placed for the Portfolio Photography Robert J. Ellison Memorial Award Division C for Cheryl Clanton's portfolio entry. We also placed for the Best Reader-Generated Photograph Division C. Cheryl Clanton’s photography of Firefighter/Paramedic Steven Terry’s Funeral Procession was exceptional, but one photo stood out in particular: Firefighter/EMT Tim Lair carrying Terry’s helmet during the procession. The date was 10-24 which in firefighter parlance means 'Assignment Complete.' The photo of Tim Lair along with four other quality photographs were submitted for Cheryl's portfolio.

Our entry for the best reader generated photograph was a photo of Ryan Bodiford rescuing a heifer calf from his flooded property in Brooksville after Hurricane Irma came through. His brother Bert Bodiford photographed the rescue and the photo was included on the front page of the issue immediately following Irma, Sept. 15, 2017. The hurricane had a significant impact on our area passing directly over the county and the resulting damage to the electrical grid that left many without power for more than a week.

It also resulted in major flooding- especially along the Withlacoochee River with the river rising well past flood stage and remaining so for several weeks.

Our new website allows us to showcase our now award winning photography. We added an image slideshow to the top of articles to give us a place to display the excellent photography in a large format. There is also a feature on the homepage that displays 'the news in images.'

We are proud to showcase the stories that make up Hernando County and to have talented staff members who help us do that.

We are also grateful for readers sharing their stories with us and their impactful photography. Sarah added that about 90 percent in the book is true but added a little “poetic license” about Clyde who is naïve in the ways of the world but gains deep insights into human nature while accompanying a group of travelers.

The book conveys Nachin’s philosophy that one should try and find the humor in every challenging situation and she hopes that people of all ages will find Clyde’s story entertaining, as well as informative.

Sarah explained she wrote it for people who enjoy traveling and also enjoy a smidgen of humor and that her central message is that we should all maintain a positive attitude when faced with challenging situations and always have a sense of humor.

“Adults and young adults will enjoy the humor and the interesting information about the places that Clyde and his human companions visited,” she said. “And children will definitely enjoy the illustrations and the fantasy elements.”

She also said, “it’s an ideal tool for teachers to instruct their students in geography and history in a fun way.”

Sarah has published two other books — “Ordinary Heroes” in 2001 which is a collection of true stories told to her

by U.S. military veterans from the World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm eras.

“I wanted to write for a contest on “Chicken Soup for the Veterans Soul,” she said. “So my sister encouraged me to go to my dad’s reunion and speak to some of the Vets there.”

book to be really special, so I went and talked to various Vets organizations in Spring Hill and Brooksville and talked to so many Veterans that it blossomed into 30 something, amazing real-life stories,” she said.

“My story didn't make it into Chicken Soup for the Soul, but I met so many wonderful people that I've started writing a sequel.”

“I also co-authored “The Long Journey” with Felicia McCranie — published in 2012,” she said.

“It tells about Felicia growing up in the Philippines and then coming to the United States and facing new challenges in her life.”

We asked her, based on her experience as a writer, what one recommendation would she make to hopeful authors just starting out?

“Don't procrastinate, like I did for far too long; if you want to write, then just start writing and learn as much as you can about the craft,” said Sarah.

“Don't be satisfied with your first draft — edit and proofread obsessively.

Network with other writers and get their opinions and take advantage of their experiences.”

Sarah explained that the most challenging part for her about writing was maintaining momentum and not getting sidetracked with other pursuits.

“Also living up to my own high standards that I have for myself. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist,” she said.

“There are several local writers groups in Hernando County that aspiring writers can tap into. One meets at the library on Spring Hill Drive on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month at 1 p.m. The other is one I started with another writer. We meet every Saturday at 2 p.m.”

“I encourage you to write,” said Sarah. The most rewarding things about being a writer are expressing my feelings and ideas. Seeing an idea that I had in my head come to life as I write it down and develop it into a story.”

Asked what the most important idea she is sharing in her books to add value to the reader’s life, Sarah said, “To keep an open mind about life and enjoy the journey.”

New books that Sarah is working on include a selfhelp book to be published by the end of the year.

Another is an historical novel set in the 1950's and 1960's.

“I also have an outline of a science fiction novella and hope to start on a sequel to “Ordinary Heroes” soon.”

In that book, Sarah will be interviewing the younger generation of Veterans, as well as more of the Korea and Vietnam-era Vets.

In any leisure time that is left, Sarah enjoys photography, videography, traveling, going to museums and cultural events, such as plays and concerts.

A few suggestions for off-road adventure

More and more over the last couple years, our Wildlife Management Areas have become a huge draw for off-roading enthusiasts.

Now, I’m not an off-roader, so to speak, myself. When I take to the woods, I have a purpose for being there which goes far beyond trying to tear up the trails and a vehicle. I’m usually either hunting or scouting new hunting spots and am out in the forests very often and lately, I’m having many opportunities to meet folks because they keep getting stuck or broken down and need me to pull them out.

I find them walking out onto the main grade and always offer to give them a ride back to whichever mud or sand pit they’re hung up on before pulling them free with my old Chevy. So, I thought I’d put a bit of advice here for anyone who may be con-

templating a bit of off-road driving.

Get a shovel: This can be any kind of shovel that won’t break when you need to dig out mud, sand, snow, or rocks from around your truck. You’d be surprised just how much work a good shovel will save you.

Bring along a Hi-Lift jack: No matter what type of rig you have, it is too heavy for you to move when you get it stuck. A Hi-Lift will give you the mechanical advantage you need to push, pull, or lift your truck back onto the trail. No other single tool is as versatile and valuable as a Hi-Lift Jack and I won’t leave the pavement without it.

And surely, you’ll want a tow strap: These things are like jumper cables as you’ll need someone else’s vehicle to make them work. But, you stand

a much better chance of getting someone to help you if you offer to supply your own. Don’t waste your money on cheap noname straps, and don’t take chances with old frayed ones either. Go ahead and spend the extra few dollars for quality.

Obviously, it’s best not to get stuck to begin with, so try to avoid driving through ruts made by someone with taller tires or risk getting your frame bedded nicely and you’ll be in for a good long dig. Don’t stop forward progress once committed, as driving through mud is part traction and part propulsion, so keep wheel speeds high.

“The event was laid out well and the food was out of this world. The weather was great and the location even better,” commented M.J. Stack, who was attending for the first time.

“It wasn’t the typical fundraiser that we attend and sneak out early,” stated another attendee.

Tina Kinney, Executive Director of the National Association on Mental Illness (NAMI) Hernando remarked, “We were all very pleased. This was our third one and although we changed the venue this year everything went smooth as ice. Attendance has increased every year.”

Some of these goals include educating the public about mental illness, eliminating the stigma of mental illness and advocating for increased funding for research into the causes and treatment of mental illness. NAMI does this through several programs and projects.

They have peer support groups for those who have a mental health condition and also support groups for relatives and friends of people who are suffering from mental illness. The organization also offers social activities and skills training.

Vincent Academy – Adventure Coast is NAMI's most recent project, partnering with Vincent House out of Pinellas Park. Its mission is to assist, promote and celebrate individuals living with a mental illness or other disability, in their effort to improve social and vocational skills and become employed in the community. The Vincent Academy groundbreaking is scheduled for June 15, 2018 at 10AM. The state recently allocated $1 million in funding for the construction of Vincent Academy.

Last year, NAMI received a grant from the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation and partnered with the school district to begin the ‘Ending the Silence’ program. Ending the Silence brings awareness to high school and middle school students experiencing signs of mental illness and teaches them how to seek help in order to continue to function well in school and life.

Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative (WREC) donated tents for the event and a wide assortment of hors d’oeuvres, as well as barbecue chicken, pork tenderloin and sides. David Lambert of WREC showed off his culinary skills by preparing Deep-fried everything - onion rings, corn and Oreos. Marker 48 provided complimentary beer on tap. There was also free sangria. And, for folks wanting to get in the real “spirit” of the day – mint juleps (for a donation).

People attending the event were encouraged to dress in their best Derby Day finery. Ladies donned creative hats from the beautiful to the wacky to vie for winner of the Best Hat competition. Men competed for Best Attired.

The success of NAMI's fundraising event would not have been possible without the support of many individuals and businesses in the community.

Mothers have changed, so has their holiday

Dsensitizing your child through teasing Almost everyone likes to be complemented although there are some who never learn to accept complements with grace. More commonly most of us do not like to be “put down” by anyone. It can become a serious issue especially if one shows others that teasing greatly aggravates them. A negative reaction to being kidded or verbally attacked is like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Many instigators enjoy getting an offended reaction from another person as a form of superior verbal fencing with each other.

The greater one’s reaction is to being teased; the more others will note the person’s vulnerability to this game. One after the other will jump into this negative interaction possibly to be befriended by the dominant personality or to ward off attacks by the perpetrator. The offended person will be unmercifully attacked by most of the others although occasionally a youngster might act as a good knight protecting the weaker child.

From the beginning of time these types of annoying incidents have happened in every culture all over the world. It is part of human nature to spar to dominate over others by verbal and physical means. This is also seen in young animals hissing and knocking each other down in a playful way. It is a necessary stage of developing the skills to survive in the wild. Learning how to unemotionally handle personally perceived offensive comments is an important skill in a civilized society.

Several generations ago many mothers took a more proactive approach to assist their child in dealing with put-downs by giving them instruction through riddles, “sticks and stones can break your bones but names can never harm you.” The child understood after these talks, if someone called him a pink elephant, it did not make the child one. Another phrase to protect a child is “I am rubber and you are glue, everything you say bounces off me and sticks to you.” These tactics help some children stand up to others without breaking down in anger or tears.

Currently too many mothers believe their child cannot defend himself. They see their child as a perennial victim who needs to be protected by the parents. This lack of faith in the child’s ability to stand up for himself can be reversed by parental preparation. Parents are key in training their children to appropriately respond in these types of verbal exchanges and desensitize them to ludicrous and insensitive remarks.

In the past most men were less than PC with their children in order to toughen them up. High self-esteem was a non-issue but a child being able to handle himself reasonably with insensitive children was. These fathers often assessed when the child did not do his best and said, “It is horrible, do it over. “ ”You are an embarrassment to our family,” and other insensitive but common statements. Fathers understood that sensitivity toward peer remarks was a self-defeating tactic. These fathers trained their children to develop a “thick skin” to deflect the nastiness of others.

At that time both parents knew people had two different types of sensitivity. How they feel about a statement directed at them and more importantly how others are feeling.

The first sensitivity to the negative remarks about oneself should be desensitized while the sensitivity to other’s feelings is the great gift of empathy that should be enhanced.

This distinction has been muddled.

Parents need to emphasize the different reasons for these opposite responses. Sensitivity to the feelings of the less fortunate should be encouraged while being sensitive to every nasty remark directed at them should be ignored or played-down.

Today too many modern adults are trying to short circuit the growing up trials and tribulations by intervening in the process supposedly to protect the child from unnecessary pain.

These parents unfortunately are misguided and certainly unwise. Goofy Stuff by Vincent Cardegin In my early days at Exwork, a customer handed me a plant and wanted to know all about it. I told her I didn’t know anything except what the little card stuck in the dirt there said.

She asked, “Why don’t you know this?”

I told her, “Because I didn’t go to gardening school.”

And that’s true. Oh, I tried to memorize a bunch of the stuff when I first started, but soon gave it up. I only accepted the job in Garden to get off of night shift.

But I did develop a kind of routine with customers concerning such questions. For a while I had a perennial answer to that perennial question, “Is this plant an annual?”

Me: “No, ma’am, that’s a perennial.”

Cus: “Oh. But it says annual on the little card.”

Then why did you ask?

I wondered; and said, “It’s an annual up north, but down here it’s a perennial.”

Cus: “Ohhh...”

I also made fun of the word “variegated.” It seemed every version of a plant with a streak of new color not green had that word in its name.

Cus: “Excuse me, what’s the name of this plant?”

Me: “That’s a Variegat-

If the patio floor was especially dirty with potting mixes and plant remains, one of us would ask, “Is the floor variegated?”

“Yep, it’s an entirely new species of floor.”

“I guess we need to sweep.”

“Yep.” One day in the Yard we discovered patches of mold growing inside the bags of play sand.

“When did we get variegated play sand?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” my fellow worker replied.

“Well, the black really sets off the sand color,” I said.

“Yeah?” she frowned.

“Ohhh.... Well, I don’t like it.”

“Yes, and I won’t do it again.”

My point is that hired hands are not experts in what the store sells. The vast number of products, even those in one department, is so many and so ever changing that any pretense to expertise is laughable. Each worker knows something about something, but none of them can master the specifications on every label.

Like most of our holidays, Mother’s Day began with a major religious connotation that has been largely overtaken by commercialism.

Today’s celebrations also have been affected by such facts as: * Throughout the world, women are having fewer children. Fertility rates have dropped in the past 50 years from 4.5 births per woman to 2.5 per woman. * In the U.S, men and women are marrying at later ages — from the average age of 20 to 27 for brides over the past 50 years and from almost 23 to just over 29 for grooms. * Consequently, birth rates have dropped for women under age 30 and have risen among women aged 30-44.

But births out-of-wedlock have risen to more than half (53 percent) for women under 30. * Even more striking is the fact that today, only 46 percent of families with children under 18 years of age include two parents in a first marriage.

Some 15 percent of families have two parents in a remarriage situation. In seven percent of two parent situations, it is a cohabiting arrangement. In 26 percent of the cases, there is a single parent. Five percent of children have no parent in their life.

All of those developments have affected family relationships and attitudes toward a celebration of the role of mothers which some historians have suggested stem from the ancient Greek spring festivals honoring the maternal goddess Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities in Greek mythology.

Romans later notoriously celebrated the spring festival Hilaria dedicated to the mother goddess, Cybele.

Through later centuries, Catholic Christians have observed feast days honoring Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The principal ones are the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in December, the Feast for Mary, Mother of God in January, and the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in August.

The modern observance probably took root in the 1870s when Julia Ward Howe, famed author of the words to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” advocated for a June date to honor mothers especially as supporters of peace.

But the woman who brought the celebration to fruition was herself single.

Anna Marie Jarvis was the ninth of 11 children of Ann Maria (Reeves) and Granville E. Jarvis on May 1, 1864, in Webster, West Virginia. t was her mother’s church and community life that inspired the daughter to have careers in public education, banking, insurance and a taxi business as well as a strong faith of her own.

After her mother’s death three years earlier, Anna Marie organized a memorial service in the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church where they both had been active. The May 10th, 1908, event was a service honoring not only her mother but all mothers.

Miss Jarvis said it was in response to a prayer by her mother at the end of a Sunday School class many years earlier: “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mothers day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it.”

Encouraged by the response to the service which featured white carnations, her mother’s favorite flower, and its symbolism of a mother’s pure love, Miss Jarvis and her supporters began writing to people of influence around the country and by 1911 nearly every state was holding Mother’s Day ceremonies.

It was on May 8, 1914, that President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution of Congress officially designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Before her death in 1948, she sought to rescind the holiday designation because she felt the nursery, confection and greeting card industries had commercialized it to such an extent that much of the significance and real sentiment had been lost.

Outside the home, it still is the church where the day is most celebrated. Even there, much of the observance has become routine and somewhat trite with recognition of the oldest mother and the one with the most children.

Yet God’s word, as it comes to us in the Bible, says it should be otherwise.

In the 31st chapter of Proverbs the good woman who is a wife and mother is described as “worth far more than diamonds.”

She is called trust worthy, “always faces tomorrow with a smile,” speaks kindly and when she does “has something worthwhile to say,” a skillful and diligent worker, “quick to help anyone in need.” She “keeps an eye on everyone in her household and keeps them all busy and productive.”

“Her children respect and bless her, her husband joins in with words of praise…(because) the woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the fear of God. Give her everything she deserves!” [“The Message” version of the Bible.]

tured rabbit, poultry, swine and steer competitions.

The ‘Cloverbuds Competition’ for children ages 5 - 7, is neither judged or scored, but aims to introduce the concept of recognition for animal husbandry, awarding participation ribbons only.

For the older children, the competition process is rigorous and thorough.

Scores are based on a number of standards. In the rabbit and poultry competitions, standards are set by the The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) and the American Poultry Association (APA).

“It has to do with size, weight, length of ears, color, body type, head size, and so much more. The animals are given ribbons based not only on these standards but the general care, condition, and grooming of the animal. Once the ribbons are declared by the judge, s/he chooses class winners (classes are by age and gender) and then from those, a grand and a reserve grand for the show. These are the animals that are the closest to the ideal standards, are well presented in condition and grooming, and show the most promise for continuing the characteristics of the breed,” explained Nancy A. Moores, 4-H Youth Development Agent III. Questions are asked of each competitor relating to health of the animal, determining gender and if it's fit to breed. Based on their answers, points are awarded.

Steer are judged on body condition and finish.

Moores explained, “This is a market animal going directly to slaughter and will be a food product in someone’s home. Therefore, the judge is making sure it is “finished out” and ready for consumption. While we do not have the ability to see inside, the judge uses his hands to feel for

things such as the rib area (rib eye) and such. They are very experienced in the skills of judging an animal while still on the hoof.” In the showmanship category, judges look for how well the competitor handles the steer, maintaining the correct posture to show off the animal’s assets.

While Moores says it’s much more difficult to show swine, they are judged similar to steer. For both steer and swine, questions are asked in relation to the meat industry, cuts of meat and values of certain cuts.

Judges expect competitors to show their swine in a specified manner.

Moores explains that it’s, “about keeping the animal moving, the head up and out of the dirt to show off the length of loin, shoulder and butt, as well as the framing of the animal.

You are supposed to keep it moving in front of the judge but far enough away that s/he can see the entire pig in one view. Never put yourself between the pig and the judge and use your equipment to settle the animal and keep it moving but never strike the animal hard.”

As you can see, there are lot of concepts and techniques for these kids to master in order to successfully raise livestock and compete in youth livestock shows.
