Brooksville to disband police department Will sign agreement with HCSO for law enforcement services

BY LISA MACNEIL HERNANDO SUN STAFF WRITER

After months of debate, Brooksville City Council voted 4-1 at a special meeting on April 30,2018 to delegate law enforcement duties to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO). The potential for disbanding the Brooksville Police Department (BPD) was realized last summer, when the city’s budget revealed a large deficit. Council Member Natalie Kahler

was the dissenting vote. As in the previous meetings, citizens of Brooksville opened the meeting with their pleas to the council to keep BPD, and some spoke in support of HCSO providing the law enforcement. Brooksville resident Ramona Whitaker opened her comments by stating she has a “small town mentality.” Whitaker, who spoke of her respect for both agencies, said, “If (Brooksville) closes its police department, it’s going to lose a lot of its individuality and its

personality.” The fear of Brooksville losing its identity has been an issue with numerous city residents since discussions first began. Interim BPD Chief Paul Sireci presented organization revisions within BPD that could possibly save the department. Without going too deeply into each, Sireci concentrated on three scenarios for streamlining personnel, with one organizational chart showing 16 full-time officers, See BPD, Page 4
