The lost forts of Hernando County

BY ROCCO MAGLIO HERNANDO SUN Hernando County is the home of several forgotten forts: Fort Cross, Fort Annutteliga, and Fort De Soto. The purpose of these forts was to protect the early settlers from Indian attacks and to provide a base from which the army could operate.

Fort Cross Fort Cross was established around 1839 and closed in 1840. It was reopened a short while later to provide supplies to the settlers. The fort was said to be made of logs laid on an earthen embankment. The fort was maintained by a detachment of soldiers from "Company F, 4th Infantry."

There does not appear to be an agreed upon location of where the fort resided.

Different historians have suggested locations for the fort along State Road 50. Roger Landers suggested it was located near the present day Bayfront Hospital. Other historians place its location near the Suncoast Expressway or a couple miles to east of the Suncoast Expressway.

The first man-made oyster reef was built with the help of numerous volunteers and boat captains on April 14, 2018 in Centipede Bay off the coast of Hernando County. Throughout the day a total of 98 volunteers and 12 boat captains helped to build the reef. Eighty percent of the reef was built with over 2400 bags of oyster shell placed. Hernando County, Aquatic Services Manager, Keith Kolosa, reports they are in the process of scheduling when the remainder of the work will be completed.

The mesh bags will help to create a substrate for the oysters to grow on. The spat (oyster larvae) settle on the shells and will grow into full-size oysters if conditions are right (salinity, temperature, depth). The timing of the reef deployment coincided with April oyster spawning. A preliminary project using recruitment tiles led by Brittany HallScharf, Hernando County Sea Grant agent indicated that natural oyster spawning would be a sufficient method to populate the oyster shell substrate. Hall-Scharf explained that if natural recruitment isn’t as effective as hoped, then they will look into other methods of populating the reef such as hatchery-reared spat, or oyster larvae, to seed the site.

County Commissioners mull their options in removing Nicholson from office

County Commissioner Nick Nicholson was absent from the April 24, 2018 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) regular meeting. He was arrested on April 19, 2018 on counts relating to owning, maintaining or operating an establishment of prostitution and “purchasing the services of any person engaged in prostitution.”

Nicholson has not yet given a statement, and has not resigned.

Nicholson, an engineer and owner of Nicholson Engineering Associates Inc. was elected to the Hernando County Board of County Commissioners in 2012 and re-elected in 2016. He has served as Chairman and Second Vice Chairman. Having been in the community since 1986, he has served on a number of local boards.

Chairman Steve Champion began the meeting by addressing the resulting public controversy, and the perception that the BOCC has jurisdiction in deciding if Nicholson should remain on the Board. “We don’t have a say in what happens to Commissioner Nicholson,” Champion said. Legally, only Governor Rick Scott has the authority to remove Nicholson from the BOCC or allow him to remain.

Commissioner Jeff Holcomb was a member of the board in 2015 when a similar incident involving Nicholson became public.

was Chairman at the time, to step down. “When you’re chairman of this board, you’re the face of this county… you represent this Board of County Commissioners.” Since Nicholson was the current Vice Chairman at the April 24, 2018 meeting, Holcomb motioned to appoint Commissioner John Allocco as Vice Chairman and Commissioner Wayne Dukes as Second Vice Chairman. The board agreed unanimously.

Holcomb also asked the board as a whole to send an official letter to the Governor expressing the collective desire to have Nicholson removed.

Each commissioner spoke about their communications with the public and media over the past days. Chairman Dukes described the relationships among the commissioners, to explain why he could not answer direct questions about Nicholson’s lifestyle. “(The commissioners) are not friends, we don’t go fishing together. I don’t know how anyone lives in their house.” He went on to say that he hopes Commissioner Nicholson finds the help that he needs.

County Administrator Len Sossamon has also

received angry communications from citizens who believe he has neglected to hold all of the commissioners accountable. Champion defended Sossamon, and said the reality is that “(Sossamon) works for us, we don’t work for the administrator. We work for the people.” County Attorney Garth Coller was also the recipient of such communications, and reiterated that decision is solely that of the governor.

Jimmy Lodato, who was Nicholson’s Democratic opponent during the 2016 election, spoke directly to Nicholson during Citizen’s Comments, in the event he was watching the locally televised meeting. “If you’re listening, Nick, please resign. Don’t let the Governor remove you from office. It would be too embarrassing.”

Because the story broke midweek last week- Commissioner Nicholson’s arrest was not carried in last Friday’s print edition.

Here is a recap of his arrest: The arrest stems from an investigation in relation to domestic disturbance arrests that occurred at Nicholson’s Spring Hill residence on Feb. 20, 2018.

The following information is provided by the Hernan-

do County Sheriff’s Office: “Upon arrival, deputies met with the female victim, Valerie Surette, in the doorway of the residence.

The victim told deputies she had been involved in a heated verbal altercation with her husband, Kendel Surette, and he threw a screwdriver at her, hitting her in the face.

Deputies noted that both of the Surettes had red, glassy eyes and slurred speech, indicating they were under the influence of an unknown substance.

Physical evidence (injury to Valerie's face) of domestic violence was present; therefore, Kendel was placed under arrest for Domestic Battery.

During the investigation, information was obtained regarding allegations of additional criminal activity occurring within the residence and/or involving persons living in the residence. As a result of said allegations, the case was turned over to Hernando County Vice and Narcotics Unit.

A complete and thorough investigation was conducted by detectives in the Vice and Narcotics Unit, working in conjunction with Special Agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). The law enforcement investigators also maintained continuous communication and coordination with the State Attorney's Office of the Fifth Judicial Circuit (SAO).

Community mourns the loss of 16 year old Seth Leathers HERNANDO SUN STAFF

Seth Leathers, 16, was a Junior at Weeki Wachee High School.

He was killed in a car wreck on US 19 and Osceola Drive on April 18, 2018 when a pickup truck hit the 2001 Mustang he was riding in around 3:30PM. Leathers and his friend Garret Herman, 17 (the driver) were on their way to church to play basketball. Herman is still in critical condition.

According to reports, the two friends, traveling southbound, were making a left hand turn onto Country Road just south of Osceola and were hit by an oncoming northbound pickup truck traveling in the outside lane.

His family and

friends, students and staff at Weeki Wachee High are mourning the young man whose nickname was “Big Boi.” His memorial service

took place on Sunday April 22, 2018. His obituary reads in part, “He was a kind, intelligent, gentle soul…”

The writer describes

him as a “video game all nighter, group enforcer, and group comedian.” And continues, “The powers that be must've saw something great because he leaves us WAY TOO early…”

County considers a trap-neuter-vaccinate-return program to control feral feline population

At the April 24, 2018 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting, Hernando County Animal Services Manager James Terry proposed a “Trap Neuter Vaccinate Return (TNVR)” program for homeless and “community cats” in Hernando County.

The program is designed to control the population growth of cats, which will ultimately cuts costs for veterinary care of cats taken to shelters and reduce cases of euthanasia. The BOCC voted unanimously to move forward with the plan, placing it on future agendas to consider ordi-

nance changes.

Terry stressed that the goal of the program, while reducing the number of cats potentially euthanized, is to control population, and is not about increasing the number of cats. Volunteers with the program will trap strays, transport them to the PetLuv clinic where they will be vaccinated, spayed or neutered, have their ears “tipped”, and be returned to the location where they were collected. “Tipping” of the ears is the removal of the top quarter-inch of an ear to signal that the animal has already been vaccinated and spayed or neutered, should it be trapped again.

According to Terry,

TNVR is steadily becoming the standard for feline population control. Cities that have implemented the program have seen dramatic reductions in feline populations. Jacksonville is one such city that has seen the number stray feline intakes reduced from 12,093 to 6,740 in ten years. Addressing euthanasia as a form of population control, Terry said, “(Hernando) county did that for fifty years. Ninety percent euthanasia of cats, and it did nothing.”

Responding to Commissioner John Allocco’s request to elaborate on how removing homeless cats from the county altogether will not solve the problem, Terry said, “From

the business perspective, whenever a food source is offered, cats are going to congregate.” The people who feed these cat populations will not turn them over to authorities if they believe the cat will be immediately euthanized.

Furthermore, simply euthanizing the animals only makes room for more cats to move in and increase the population.

According to Terry’s research, it costs $20,447 per year just to euthanize cats. Hernando County keeps cats up to three days, which costs more due to those extra days feeding and providing care. Under the TNVR program, cats will typicalSee CATS, Page 6

On 04062018 a search warrant was conducted on 16173 Fruitville Street in reference to the GPS location on the stolen cell phone. Upon the execution of this search warrant the HTC Desire cell phone was located and recovered. This phone was in possession of Steven Morgan who advised he obtained the phone from his next door neighbor who is the defendant. He advised he obtained it a few days prior to the search warrant from the defendant and he traded it for a few pairs of old shoes.

Contact was then made with the defendant who was standing outside of his residence.

Upon speaking to him he advised that he did in fact trade the HTC phone to Steven. He advised that he located the phone in the garbage in front of xxxx California Street which is the victim’s residence.

Contact was made with the victim who confirmed that the cell was last within his kitchen along with the other items stolen from his residence.

It should be noted that the phone was in good condition when it was stolen and believed to be valued at about $100.00 dollars.

Based upon the aforementioned information probable cause was established for the defendants arrest and he was arrest accordingly."

Florida school board order 34 new officers after shooting OCALA, Fla. (AP) — Four days after a student was injured by a shooting at a Florida high school officials have ordered 34 new officers to be placed in the county's schools for the remainder of the school year.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports that the Marion County School Board on Monday approved $224,000 to pay for the officers to protect elementary and charter schools for the four weeks remaining the school year.

Police say 19-year-old Sky Bouche opened fire at Forest High School in Ocala on Friday, a day of national classroom walkouts to protest gun violence.

Bouche faces terrorism, aggravated assault with a firearm and other charges.

The shooting occurred about two months after a gunman killed 17 people and wounded 17 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The defendant gave verbal consent to search the vehicle.

As the defendant was stepping out of the vehicle, the defendant spontaneously uttered, “I want to be honest and give you this”. The defendant handed me two clear plastic baggies containing a green leafy substance.

The defendant was then detained and placed in the back of my agency issued patrol vehicle. Located in the vehicle that the defendant exited, were 7.3 grams total of a green leafy substance, a digital scale, 5.9 grams of hashish oil (weighed in container), a marijuana grinder and a marijuana water pipe.

The green leafy substance, hashish oil and the paraphernalia were field tested and showed a positive indication for the presence of THC. The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail.

The defendant was issued a court date of 05/15/18 at 0900 hours in Courtroom D of the Hernando County Courthouse.

The defendant is currently being held on a total bond of of $4,000.00."

04/21/2018 I observed a blue 2003 Ford F-150 bearing Florida tag IGKM07 to be travelling northbound on Cobblestone Drive approaching Spring Hill Drive in Spring Hill, Hernando County, Florida. I then observed the same vehicle fail to stop at the stop sign located at that intersection. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle at the intersection of Spring Hill Drive and Port Court in Spring Hill, Hernando County, Florida.

Contact was made with the defendant and driver Stephen Colwell. The defendant’s identity was confirmed via his Florida Identification Card.

When asked for his driver’s license, the defendant stated “she should be driving” and pointed to his passenger, Sarah M. When asked why, the defendant stated “my license is suspended.” A check of the defendant’s license was conducted via the ELVIS system which showed the defendant to hold a revoked Class “E” driver’s license, with a revocation date of 06/27/2017. A check of the DAVID system showed the defendant to have been convicted of DWLSR two (2) prior times on 11/07/2007 as well as 03/12/2008.

The defendant was then placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident, where he is being held on a $2,000 bond per the bond schedule.

For the green leafy substance, I used NarcoTest 7609 which turned ‘red’, indicating the substance to be positive for THC. All substances were weighed using OHAUS scale C305-S, serial number 47871. The Cocaine weighed out to 6.3 grams total, the MDMA weighed out to 3.7 grams total, and the Marijuana weighed out to .3 grams total.

The defendant was then placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident where he is being held on a $31,000 bond per the bond schedule.

A traffic stop was conducted and the defendant received a verbal warning for the traffic violation.

I then asked the defendant if I could search both of his black pouches attached to his bicycle, the defendant then stated, “Go ahead, there’s nothing in either of them”. I then searched a small black pouch attached to the bicycle seat, inside of the pouch was a single clear bag with a white crystal substance that appeared consistent with methamphetamine through my training and experience.

Using Narco test kit 7623 the substance tested positive for methamphetamine.

I then asked Kristina for permission to search the vehicle. Kristina provided verbal consent and allowed me to search the said vehicle.

The defendant then asked to retrieve his drink before I searched the vehicle. I then told the defendant he can, at which time I observed the defendant reach into the vehicle and retrieve a white clear bag with a crystal substance from the floor of the vehicle and place it inside of his left front pocket. Through my training and experience the substance inside of the bag was consistent with methamphetamine.

I then asked the defendant to empty his left pocket and he complied and he pulled out a white clear bag with a crystal like substance.

SCOTT, CHAD COLE YOB: 1984 TATTOO: LOCK AND CHAIN CHARGES: POSS OF COCAINE, POSSESS AND OR SALE OF CONTROLLED SUB, POSS OF MARIJUANA Arrested at 04/21/2018 03:57 SPRING HILL DR & KASS CIR, SPRING HILL Arrest Summary: "On 04/21/2018 I observed a maroon 2003 Saturn bearing Florida tag GQJN04 travelling northbound on Cobblestone Drive approaching Spring Hill Drive in Spring Hill, Hernando County, Florida. I then observed the same vehicle fail to stop at the stop sign at the intersection. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle at the intersection of Spring Hill Drive and Kass Circle in Spring Hill, Hernando County, Florida.

Contact was made with the defendant and driver Chad Scott, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Upon speaking with the defendant, I immediately detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted.

While searching, I located multiple empty black plastic baggies with white skulls on them, commonly used for storing narcotics. I also located four (4) clear plastic baggies which were located in between the driver’s seat and the center console. The four (4) baggies were inside of one other plastic bag. Inside three (3) of the baggies I observed a white powder like substance which appeared consistent with Cocaine. Inside one (1) other baggie, I observed a light brown in color substance which appeared to be a crushed up pill of some sort.

Also in between the passenger seat and center console, I located two small pieces of a green leafy substance which appeared consistent with Marijuana. Also while searching, I located a black portable scale which was in the floorboard of the front passenger seat.

DEHESA, WILLIAM YOB: 1961 CHARGES: DISORDERLY INTOXICATION Arrested at 04/21/2018 21:45 2113 MARINER BLVD, SPRING HILL Arrest Summary: "On 4/21/18, I was dispatched to Seven Deuce’s Bar located at 2113 Mariner Blvd. in reference to disorderly conduct.

Upon arrival, I made contact with Joseph whom stated the defendant, William Dehesa, was intoxicated and acting disorderly. Joseph advised that William was saying racial slurs such as “I hate n*ggers,” and when asked to leave the premises, he proceeded to urinate in the front of the business. Joseph advised he informed William Dehesa that he needed to leave the premises and was no longer welcome, at which point William tried to get him to engage him in a physical altercation.

Contact was then made with William Dehesa whom was slurring his speech, using profanity and trying to get a negative reaction from law enforcement while making racial slurs. William advised he has a lot of beers and refused to stop causing a disturbance.

William was then placed under arrest and while being transported to jail, William spontaneously stated, “ I curse at cops because no one likes them”, “dumb b*tch”, “I hate n*ggers, do you?”, “Let me catch you out of work, I will get off this charge anyway”.

A witness called and reported seeing a white female batter a white male in the parking lot. The witness reported the white female slapped the male in the face, then the male tried walking away, but as the male was walking away, the female slapped him in the face again.

The male pushed the female away, but the female slapped him in the face a third time.

Contact was made with the male subject, Cody, who advised he and his girlfriend with whom he resides together as a family, Tiffany Wade, grabbed him in the face during an argument. Cody denied that Tiffany hit him.

Contact was made with Tiffany, who also advised she was in an argument with Cody and admitted grabbing him in the face during the argument. Tiffany also denied hitting Cody.

Based on the witness’ statement that Tiffany hit Cody several times while Cody was walking away, and Cody and Tiffany’s statements that Tiffany grabbed Cody in the face during an argument, Tiffany was determined to be the primary aggressor in the altercation, and probable cause was established for her arrest.

Tiffany was taken into custody and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center where she was charged with Domestic Battery and held without bond."

Man trespasses at Explorer K-8 and delivers a strange message (STAFF) A man by the name of Danial David Lee Dombkowski, 26, was arrested on April 23, 2018 for trespassing on the grounds of the Hernando County School Explorer K-8.

The arrest report states that the defendant, “made entry to a secure area of the school structure through an unsecured door

without permission. He remained in the ‘mall area’ of the school and when approached by staff, he advised, ‘There is a black cloud over the school and God told me to come in and pray over the kids.’ He was then escorted out of the building where he was taken into custody.”

Dombkowski was given a $5000 bond. His court date is scheduled for May

16, 2018 at 9AM in Courtroom B. Given the recent school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas this was traumatic for the students. We heard from the father of an Explorer K-8 teacher. He said that the children were scared, but his son was able to calm them down and take them to a place of safety.

Hernando High School Bus overturns (STAFF)

On Wednesday April 18, a school bus carrying Hernando High students was traveling westbound on SR-50 when a tractor trailer hauling toilet paper exiting State Road 75 failed to fully stop at a red light and collided with the Bus. The impact of the collision caused the school bus to overturn on its side.

The School bus was transporting 18 high school students at the time of the accident.

Six of the 18 students were treated for minor injuries. None of the students were transported for their injuries by EMS. The driver of the tractor trailer was cited for violation of the traffic signal.

Nicholson W/M… was placed under arrest today [April 18, 2018] and charged as follows: • Own, Establish, Maintain, or Operate any Place, Structure, Building, or Conveyance for the Purpose of Lewdness, Assignation, or Prostitution - 1 count; Bond - $1,000 • Purchase the Services of any Person Engaged in Prostitution - 2 counts; Bond - $2,000 ($1,000 each charge) • Total Bond - $3,000.

The case remains under investigation.”

Commissioner Nicholson’s relationship with a stripper was investigated in 2012. Kimberly Losurdo who was employed at Calendar Girls strip club in Pasco County was arrested in 2012 for child abuse after a child she was caring for ingested crack cocaine. A state law enforcement investigation turned up her relationship with Nicholson during his 2012 campaign. No charges were brought against Nicholson as officials said, "the investigation lacked sufficient evidence."

Since Nicholson’s arrest, Valerie Surette was granted a temporary injunction for protection against sexual violence from Mr. Nicholson.

Although her name was redacted in the injunction, the petitioner indicates their place of residence to be Nicholson’s home on Tiburon Ave. in Spring Hill and she has spoken to news agencies in regards to a restraining order that she obtained against Nicholson.

Allegations by the petitioner graphically describe a sexually abusive relationship between herself and Mr. Nicholson in which he coerced her into having sex with him in exchange for money or other necessities.

Awaiting a hearing on May 3, 2018 in front of Judge Thomas R. Eineman, Mr. Nicholson cannot go within 500 feet of his home on Tiburon Ave among other restrictions.

Judge Kristie Ruppe is presiding over the criminal case for the second degree misdemeanor prostitution related charges against Mr. Nicholson.

He has entered a plea of not guilty and a demand for jury trial. Mr. Nicholson is represented by the law firm Hyslop and Pila, PA. A Notice to Appear on May 31, 2018 before Judge Ruppe was

addressed to Mr. Nicholson, his attorney and bail bondsmen.

While Mr. Nicholson has not been convicted of a crime, it may be difficult to remove or suspend him from office since his wrongful actions did not affect the performance of his duties and were unrelated to his position as an elected official. He also has not yet been convicted. According to Florida Statutes 112.51, “(1) By executive order stating the grounds for the suspension and filed with the Secretary of State, the Governor may suspend from office any elected or appointed municipal official for malfeasance, misfeasance, neglect of duty, habitual drunkenness, incompetence, or permanent inability to perform official duties.

(2) Whenever any elected or appointed municipal official is arrested for a felony or for a misdemeanor related to the duties of office or is indicted or informed against for the commission of a federal felony or misdemeanor or state felony or misdemeanor, the Governor has the power to suspend such municipal official from office.”

OYSTER REEF from front page

different divisions are leading this project (UF/ IFAS, Florida Sea Grant, and School of Forest Resource Conservation) and are partnered with Hernando County.

Some of the funding will be used to plant seagrass in the vicinity of the oyster reef with the help of a new ‘Grasses in Classes’ program at the Gulf Coast Academy of Science and Technology in Spring Hill.

Keith Kolosa stated, “It’s truly a great example of collaboration and partnerships and could not have been accomplished without community support and volunteers.”

Students from James Madison University in Virginia were in Centipede Bay on April 13th to use drones to study and photograph oyster reefs. Although Hernando County has few natural oyster reefs there are some clusters of natural reef in Centipede Bay. One, in particular, is approximately 6’ by 2-3’ and is fairly healthy. The lead student in the project is graduate student Ballie Lavan who is researching, via drone photography, a way to create a digital model for the future creation of a more natural artificial reef. The photographs will be used to develop computer models and eventually molds for creating cement starter reefs. This was in collaboration with Joshua Patterson, an assistant professor in fisheries and aquatic sciences at the University of Florida. Multiple photographs were required as Ms. Lavan feels that the spacing between the shells in the oyster reefs are essential to their formation and health. By creating artificial reefs with more realistic spacing between the shells, the team hopes

to improve the rate at which oyster larvae strike, or cling, to the artificial reefs, thus improving the prospects of increasing oyster populations.

The feasibility of 3D technology is growing and can hopefully, be produced on a mass scale. Lower costs and increased capabilities of 3D printing technologies allows for revolutionary opportunities in the world of oceanography research.

Currently, some examples of 3D technology in ocean research are 3D printed replicas of marine organisms and 3D printed coral reef replicas to restore damaged reefs.

Of interest, to note is how the oyster reef is formed. The oyster larvae can use a number of “cues” to help them in the house-hunting process.

First, they can detect calcium carbonate, one of the materials that make up oyster shells and they can detect the sounds of an oyster reef, then swim in that direction and increase the potential of greater oyster populations.

Oysters are an important part of marine ecology as they are filter feeders, removing algae, sediments, and chemical contaminants. One oyster can filter

with the help of over 100 volunteers over the course of seven different events that Hernando County Sea Grant agent Brittany Hall-Sharf coordinated.

The project would not have been possible without a $29,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, through the Coastal Partnership Initiative. more than 50 gallons of water per day. The oyster reefs also provide habitat for a large number of species, they stabilize bottom areas and influence water circulation within estuaries.

This guarantees increased water clarity, which means improved aquatic vegetation and overall health of the bay.

The students from JMU also helped on the 14th of April with the deployment of mesh oyster bags in Centipede Bay. Keith Kolosa, aquatic services manager for Hernando County stated there is an additional section of oyster reef permitted but the mesh bag supply has been exhausted.

Hernando County environmental habitat and need for citizen volunteers we will continue to keep the citizens of the county aware of any continued plans for deployment of oyster bags or artificial reefs.

Florida Statute 823.15 already exists to require veterinary clinics to spay or neuter animals that are to be returned to the outdoors, which states, in part, “... every feasible means be used to reduce the incidence of birth of unneeded and unwanted puppies and kittens.

Determining which programs result in improved adoption rates and in reduced euthanasia rates for animals in shelters and animal control agencies is crucial to this effort.”

The program will also ensure that cats that are obvious pets, or otherwise determined to be adoptable, are returned to its owner when possible, or routed to an adoption pathway.

Terry and his team of associates at Alley Cat Allies, PetLuv and the Hernando County Humane Society are making strides to organize the effort county-wide. Presently, Animal Services, which is part of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), will not return animals to the places they were picked up. “Hopefully, those are bridges we can build going forward,” said Terry, who used Brevard County Sheriff’s Office’s change of heart as an example. They received an outpouring of community praise after joining that part of the effort. For now, Humane Society volunteers will return the felines to their “homes.”

Additionally, the program will result in better behaved community cats, since spaying and neutering will diminish mating behaviors, such as loud vocalizing and fighting.

Hernando County Animal Services has already received a commitment from an unnamed non-profit to match up to $50,000 for the program.

PetLuv has agreed to flat $20.00 per cat spay or neuter fee for the TNVR program. The Hernando County Humane Society will pursue grants to add additional funding, and act as a partner for cats on the adoption pathway.

Richard Salvani, Director of the nonprofit PetLuv Spay and Neuter clinic in Brooksville said while it’s not possible to estimate the cost savings to the county at this stage, it will not cost the county anything.

gram. Burton, a former Animal Control Officer in Arlington, VA was once an opponent of the TNVR framework. When it was passed in her area, Burton said, “I basically sat in my office and pouted the whole time.” She changed her mind six months later when she saw the benefits.

Burton said there’s also a lot of concern about simply releasing the animals back into the wild. “In (an opponent’s mind), they think every cat should be in a home, sitting on a couch, and that it’s inhumane for them to be outside.”

However, according to Burton, cats have been around for 10,000 years, and didn’t regularly reside in homes until cat litter was invented in the midto-late forties. Molly Armus, Attorney with Alley Cat Allies reported that opponents who agree that the outdoor cats are doing just fine also think they’re doing too well, and killing birds and wildlife.

Hernando County resident Shirley Miketinac, who is in favor of the program, posed the question of the viability of the rabies vaccine beyond one year, and the county’s responsibility for maintaining rabies immunity. Julie Rosenberger, Veterinarian with Hernando County Animal Services answered by stating that there is new research that shows a single rabies vaccine in cats can produce an immune response up to ten years.

Brian Hawkins, President of Bingham's Professional Pest Management supports the suggested TNVR framework, however expressed concerns for owners of businesses such as his, as well as landscapers, and others who deal in chemicals that could be toxic to animals. Hawkins recounted a colleague’s “nightmare” in St. Petersburg, where they found a cat had been trapped under a mobile home during structural fumigation, and was given a citation for animal cruelty. Deputy County Attorney Jon Jouben explained that the current Hernando County Ordinance states there must be intent in order to charge an individual with animal cruelty. Jouben is confident that language can be included in any subsequent ordinances that protect businesses in these situations.

At the conclusion of the discussion, Brooksville Mayor Betty Erhard read from a letter on behalf of the City Council. The letter that was presented to Alley Cat Allies, describes the City Council as “very excited” and urges the BOCC to support the program and adopt the changes to ordinances that will implement it.

Fort Clinch

Historical Fort Clinch State Park

A well-preserved Civil War fort with colorful re-enactors, beaches, miles of hiking trails and lots of wildlife.

Located on a peninsula near the northernmost point of Amelia Island, along the Amelia River, is the 1,400-acre Fort Clinch State Park and a 19th-century brick fortress. Begun in 1847 after the end of the Second Seminole War, the fortress was named in honor of General Duncan Lamont Clinch, an important figure in the First and Second Seminole Wars.

The only battle to occur at Clinch was when Union troops recaptured the fort in 1862 after Confederate forces seized control the previous year. Fort Clinch served as the base of Union operations in the area throughout the Civil War. The fort is one of the best preserved CivilWar-era forts nationwide, thanks to work in the 1930s by the State of Florida and the Civilian

Conservation Corps. Even today, it still has a very active corps of volunteers who serve as Civil War re-enactors. Every first weekend of month, the Park hosts a garrison of soldiers who demonstrate skills such as carpentry, masonry, cooking, blacksmithing, small arms demonstrations and cannon firing as well as interpreting the use of many of the buildings such as the quartermaster, infirmary and jailhouse. Visitors can explore the many rooms, galleries and grounds of the fort and learn how the soldiers worked and lived each day.

The state park provides refuge to a wide variety of wildlife including gopher tortoises, deer, raccoons, bobcats and numerous species of birds and reptiles including American alligator and painted buntings which are frequently seen at the park.

Egan’s Creek Marsh borders the west boundary of the park, providing a saltwater estuary for an abundance of marine life. The salt marsh offers scenic vistas and views of many species of wading birds while the beaches provide a critical foraging and nesting habitat for colonial shorebirds and sea turtles. Please respect posted areas and share the shore with our wildlife!

Additional activities include pier fishing, sunbathing, hiking, surfcasting, camping, birding, and shelling. There’s also picnicking, swimming, bicycling, beachcombing, Vultures at Fort Clinch State Park. and wildlife viewing.

Barnaby (10314874) is an American Bulldog mix, almost 3 years old. He came to the shelter with his brother Caprio (10314875). These handsome guys have been sitting in their kennels patiently looking at everyone walking by and wondering why they have to be at the shelter. Their owner did not show up for them, so they are now up for adoption. They can be adopted separately, and are not currently sharing a kennel at the shelter. Barnaby is black with white, friendly and good on the leash. Even after having spent several days locked up in his kennel he preferred sitting with the volunteers to running around and playing. Please take a look at Barnaby’s photos, they do speak for themselves. Barnaby has been good with other dogs at Animal Services, he just wanted to play and walked nicely side by side on the leash with another dog. We would like to find loving forever homes for Caprio and Barnaby.

LeeLee is a very confident, compact, 3-4 lb., 2-yr-old chi-terrier mix.

She is a true companion pet and is happiest in her foster mom's arms for as long as possible. This little girl sleeps with her foster mom and doesn't move at all. She is an absolute sweetie. Lee is particular with which dogs she likes.

She prefers the toy breeds, but would be happiest if she was the only pet in the home. Because of her diminutive size, she will not be adopted to families with young children.

Hernando County District prep baseball preview

With the regular season coming to a close for prep baseball teams throughout Hernando County, many of the teams have real aspirations towards winning a district championship and clinching state postseason berths. Hernando, Nature Coast and Springstead have all been steady contenders in their respective districts, with Central and Weeki Wachee remaining competitive against district opponents. As district tournaments will be underway next week, we take a closer look at each district with projections on who’ll come out on top in the land of prep baseball.

Class 6A, District 6 (Springstead, Weeki Wachee, Crystal River, Dunnellon, Citrus, Lecanto) hosted by the highest seed: The Eagles have been the most consistent team in Class 6A, District 6 this season and boasts a record of 9-1 playing within the division. Springstead’s lone district loss came back on March 27 in a 4-1 loss to last place Crystal River.

Outside of that loss to the Pirates, the Eagles remain the favorite to come away with the district title. Springstead has plenty of solid bats throughout its lineup, including seniors Nick Collins (five home runs) and Jiovel Lantigua (three home runs).

Springstead has one of the better pitching staffs in Hernando County and they’ll rely upon the arms of Kevin Tomas (1.97 ERA, 7-2) and junior Jack Jasiak (1.75 ERA, 5-2). Both Tomas and Jasiak form the top duo on the mound of any team in the county and should be able to push the Eagles through to the Class 6A postseason. The Hornets will have a tough time vying for one of the top two spots come the district championship, though Weeki Wachee is currently seeded No. 3 and is 9-12 overall and 5-5 in district play.

Class 5A, District 7 (Central, Hernando, Nature Coast, Cypress Creek, Gulf, Hudson, Fivay, Ridgewood) at Nature Coast Technical: Nature Coast Technical and Hernando, like in softball, lead this district but the road to potentially meeting in the district championship game will be a little tougher. Hudson Fivay has been more than formidable when they send out senior Gunnar Hoglund to the mound and for good reason.

The Ole Miss signee has struckout 99 batters this season and boasts an earned run average of 0.30.

The Falcons will be a tough out for either Hernando or Nature Coast. The Sharks’ batting lineup is one of the tops around and it features senior Jonathan Gates, whom is batting .426 and has hit seven home runs and drove in

Dunking For a Purpose: Challenged Athletes Foundation Basketball Tournament

Destiny Barnes and five of her classmates at Nature Coast Technical High School are organizing a project for their English 2 Class, with the goal of bettering society.

Barnes describes the project, “My group and I are holding a basketball tournament at the Nature Coast Technical High School gym on May 18th from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m.

There will be 8 teams of 5-8 players and they will compete in a scrimmage type tournament. There can be coed teams and anyone under the age of 21 can join. We will have a $5 fee for those who want to watch and a $8 fee for those who want to play. We plan to sell

concession, as well. All of the money we raise will be donated to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which provides an opportunity to those with physical challenges to live a healthy lifestyle.”

The students are looking for business sponsors for the tournament supplies such as food for the concession and t-shirts.

Barnes explains, “Our main goal is to raise at least $1000 for the Challenged Athletes

Foundation. We would be extremely grateful for any kind of donation. If a company donates $100 or less, we will place their logo on all of our flyers. If you donate $200 we will put their logo on both the flyers and the t-shirts. Hernando and Nature Coast on a crash course in Class 5A, District 7 softball

No matter how many times you look at things and how they may shake up in Class 5A, District 7, many come back to the same potential scenario occurring: Hernando and Nature Coast meeting in the district championship.

Though that may be counting the eggs before they hatch, the Leopards and Sharks have been the top two teams in 5A-7 and all roads seem to be leading towards a third matchup between the two clubs come district championship time.

Hernando made sure to start off the 5A-7 district tournament with a bang, as the Leopards routed Hudson Fivay by a score of 18-0. Nature Coast on the other hand wasn’t too shabby themselves when they blew by New Port Richey Ridgewood 15-0 in the Rams’ final ever softball game as a high school softball program.

Though many label Hernando and Nature Coast a

rivalry, the Leopards for the most part remained in full control of the series between the two clubs this season. The Leopards barely got by the Sharks 1-0 in the first go around, but soundly defeated their adversaries 11-2. Hernando’s recent dominance in the series dates back to last season, as the Leopards won three out of the four meetings between the clubs. One of those wins was an 8-4 region semifinal victory that sent Hernando to the region final.

Fast forward to this season and the Leopards have won five straight and are aiming for a potential sixth. Both squads are now seemingly on a crash course for an all Hernando County final and each team features some of the best hitting and pitching around.

Hernando’s power at the plate can not be denied, with the Leopards recording 19 home runs as a team. Senior Janea Mobley (36 runs batted in) and sophomore Taliyah Dowdell (20 runs batted in) are tied for the team lead with four home runs

Sharks are led by the bats of senior Chayse Skinner, who is currently batting a team-high .473, and Alanis Berrios’ .425 average is second for players who have played 22 or more games. Nature Coast doesn’t have one dominant pitcher, but uses a couple in rotation and is led by Alyssa Kelly (13-4, 2.97 ERA), with Berrios and Skinner both stepping into pitch when needed.

HUNTING

Transitions Spring Gobbler season has come to an end and it’s kind of a blue time around the old farm. I wait all year for that chance to go out on opening morning and sit beneath the oaks for a talk with the turkeys.

After several weeks of doing just that, it’s mighty sad to see it come to an end. I enjoyed another great season with many success stories, made a few new friends along the way and learned a lesson two from some of the trickier toms that got away.

Now, all of my Spring Gobbler gear has been carefully cleaned, sorted and put away. My beloved old Winchester, model 12 has been stripped, thoroughly cleaned and placed back into the safe and I’ve lots of photographs and notes from the field I have cataloged and saved. It’s over…. But, only ten and a half short months from now, we get to start all over again!

Now, it’s transition time, as there are still great opportunities to get outside and procure some fresh organic meat for your tables.

I’ll be doing a bit of fishing throughout the summer, keeping my family well-stocked with catfish and bream, but more often than not, I’ll be taking to the woods in search of wild hogs. Sus Scrufa the Florida Piney Wood Rooter, is pretty well populated

in all parts of Florida and are an absolute joy to hunt. They’re that perfect blend of intelligence to make the hunt challenging, yet dumb enough to make you not have to work too hard. Afterall, it gets hot this time of year.

A small handful of public lands will be opening each month for special opportunity hog hunts, the first beginning in the Richloam Wildlife Management Area in Lake and Sumter Counties.

I’ll be there with a good friend and his black mouth cur to try and put a hog or two on our tailgate. As well, I have opportunities becoming available to me through locally guided hunts. Most guides can accommodate a wide range of hog hunting experiences, depending on the method of hunting and weapon of choice.

As I meet each of the local guides and discover all there is to know about their operation, I’ll be passing that info along to you.

I get asked very often about where to go for hog hunting opportunities, so I’ll be compiling a list of not only the guides, but their services, so that you might be motivated to get up off of the couch and take to the woods to bring home a fine mess of fresh pork for your own family.

The Marine Corps League, Detachment 708 located on Sunshine Grove Road in Brooksville is a group of men and women dedicated to serving fellow veterans and the community at large. They do this in a number of ways.

Most people are familiar with the Toys for Tots campaign that is sponsored by the Marine Corps League nationwide. Our local detachment works hard each holiday season to make sure that hundreds of children get presents – sometimes the only ones they will receive. Collection boxes are set up in local businesses and anyone can place new toys in the box. Marine Corps League members pick up the gifts periodically and take them to a central sorting and distribution location.

Last year Diamond Real Estate on north U.S. 19 was the sorting and distribution center. The response from the community, as well as the requests for presents was record-breaking.

“They use our facility for a lot of their training and do overnight camp outs here. We send them on regular trips. For example, we sent them to Camp Lejeune for a threeday event. We also utilize the Young Marines for a lot of our projects, such as Toys for Tots,” Bennett remarked.

Fort Annutteliga Fort Annutteliga was situated near Stafford Lake according to maps of the time. Stafford Lake is located Northwest of the intersection of US 98 and Lake Lindsey Rd. The Fort Annutteliga is mentioned in a letter to Major Belknap in Camp McCall on March 1st 1842 near the end of the Second Seminole War: "Major: The Setlers [sic] who are to take post at the Annutaliga have reached there in safety and the troops are assisting them in the erection of two block houses, about forty of their numbers carry arms. This is an important move and will answer a better purpose towards closing the war than the quartering of two companies at Fort Cross."

This area isn’t marked with any historical site plaque, and there aren’t any remains of settlement to visit, but it did exist all the same. Fort De Soto was located in the North East corner of present day Brooksville, on Croom Road about one-half mile east of U.S. Highway 41. The property is currently owned by Edwin House.

Historian Frasier Mountain recalls a wood sign over the entrance to the House property marked Desoto.The approximate coordinates of the old De Soto stage stop are 28.56795,-82.3863694.

Mr. Mountain also mentioned that the stage stop was rumored to have been a place that Hernando De Soto camped as he explored Florida.

Jesus Came to Heal the Brokenhearted

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted…”

(Luke 4:18 KJV) How do you heal a broken heart?

Most people don’t know what to say to someone who is grieving. Some think silence is best so that they don’t say the wrong thing. Others say things that they are taught to say, such as “I’m sorry to hear that”, or “I send my condolences.”

But how does one’s heart truly get healed? It only comes by the Word of the Lord.

God quickens and renews us by the Living Word, through and by Jesus himself, who came to heal the brokenhearted through His payment of His own blood on the Cross.

Our lives would totally be broken if Jesus had not put His own life on the line and took our own place for our sins. Our lives would never be good if Jesus had not done that.

He was crucified so that we could have a better life. So that we ultimately could be free of any brokenness in our lives.

What is broke in your life?

Your marriage? Your job? Your relationships with your kids or a family member?

What about your finances? Are you broke?

What about a broken dream that you once had as kid that you have long buried many years ago?

What about your desire to live? Is that broke?

The list goes on…

Jesus came to heal all types of brokenness.

It is endless what could be broken in people’s lives. But the good news is that Jesus came to heal that broken heart, so that it doesn’t have to stay broken.

By faith, receive God’s promise that your heart and life will be healed. Whatever the case may be in your life, God is the Ultimate Great Healer and Physician. He can fix anything in your life and make it new again so that it is better than it ever was before.

Today, choose to believe and trust that God will do exactly that. You don’t have to figure it all out how He will do that. Let God do His job and let Him be the one to figure it all out. Not you.

Your job is to just believe God, to trust Him that He will do what He promised in His Word and by His Word.

Believe God to heal your broken heart.

Lots and lots of pineapples

A perfectly ripe, sweet, ready to eat pineapple will be a rich yellow color on the outside, not the green typically found at your local grocery store. The green exterior means it is not perfectly ripe and therefore is by far more acidic in taste.

As a parting gift they gave me a small pineapple plant to take home. I will be able to teach my boys about the process and how to grow their own pineapple. One of our local readers invited the Hernando Sun to come by and check out his pineapple plants.

Acy Holly, who is 89 of Brooksville has over 100 pineapple plants. He started growing them about 5 or 6 years ago. He said he found a pot with a plant in it one day, not knowing what type of plant it was, continued to water it. One day a pineapple started to grow, and he’s been growing them ever since.

In the beginning his wife obtained a few tops that Publix saved for her, and over time the plants have doubled and tripled in number.

What does he do with all that pineapple? The Holly’s usually sell them to friends and have never ended up with more pineapple than anyone wants.

Mrs. Holly even told me a story about a pineapple they sold at their family reunion auction for $25.

Perversely: Good citizens are punished, not criminals The entire “gun control movement” does not seem to comprehend that guns are not the issue. The real problem is that mental health and criminal background restrictions are not being enforced effectively. The lack of follow up of law breakers who falsify information and professional personnel who do not do the due diligence reporting dangerous mental health patients and dangerous criminals is the culprit. These so called professionals should be held accountable through appropriate punishment.

Almost all of the mass shootings have been committed by people with known psychological or criminal history but have fallen off the radar screen.

In 2013 Brevard county schools introduced the Promise Program. This program emphasized positive reinforcement intervention rather than punitive and criminal consequences for violent student behavior. Serious violence by students went purposely unreported to higher school authorities to receive more federal funds by falsely lowering violence statistics in our public schools. Now Brevard County schools have the unenviable distinction of having the most profoundly violent and chronic juvenile offenders in Florida.

Disregarding violence and law breaking promotes it, while restricting law abiding citizen’s rights to protect themselves will increase the likelihood for it to occur.

We as a society are going down an absolutely wrong path.

In certain locales we are allowing illegal immigrants not to be deported. The corrupt elite politicians in our federal government are self righteously throwing the book at less powerful rivals for minor transgressions.

The objective is to tarnish their reputation while protecting their cronies. Without justice administrated equally and fairly, justice will cease to exist and injustice will flourish.

No fault auto insurance and no fault divorce were passed to streamline and unclutter court dockets. It has made it too easy to rationalize bad choices and behavior. Auto accidents and divorce have sky rocketed. The stigma and shame for reckless driving and easy divorce has practically disappeared. This has tarnished the reputation of our court system.

In the current Florida legislation there are state laws being proposed to supposedly improve the quality of education that impact private schools. Some politicians want the department of education to inspect non public schools to increase compliance with county and state laws.

The goal is to raise such basic and easily prevented standards as hiring teachers with criminal records, falsifying fire and safety inspection records or hiring teachers without a four year degree. They also want owners not paying the rent or who have had recent bankruptcy kept from administrating a private school.

Any private school would lose its accreditation and would be closed down with these types of violations by its accrediting agency. Private schools that have spent years developing a great reputation would unnecessarily be forced to have staff energy diverted to comply with increased paperwork and bureaucratic restrictions. Again the conscientious people are being burdened for the lack of enforcement of existing standards and laws.

To the Editor: National Public Service Recognition Week Across the United States and in cities like Brooksville and Spring Hill, government employees serve and protect us every day. Throughout the year, but especially during Public Service Recognition Week, May 6th-12th, 2018 we should gratefully acknowledge their service. This is personal to me because my Father was a New York City Fireman. He died in 1954 at the age of 41. His

Slow Working My wife and I helped our daughter and her family move into a new house. We loaded and unloaded the same day, and somehow, just like at Exwork when I used to help throw the truck, I wound up inside the trailer, this time a 26-foot U-Haul. I didn’t have a rollie-table, but I hefted and dragged nearly everything to the back, where everybody else carried the boxes and furniture inside. I had the easier job, because the driveway was too steep to back the truck directly in front of the garage and so the “stockers” had to walk all the way up that steep incline.

It was a major flashback for me, sweating in such a big, long box. I don’t know why there aren’t lockable side panels that slide open to let in a bit of breeze. (Hey, we should have rented a hand jack and some pallets.

Or better yet, wrapped their household goods on pallets and rented a forklift. I drove one of those for years at Exwork.)

Mostly I was amused by everyone’s concern over my well-being, asking if I wanted a bottle of water and telling me I should take a break and sit down. True, I have lost muscle and it looks like I’ve gained weight, but it’s only been eleven months since I stopped working, and I still know the physical tricks of lifting and handling large objects. Besides, my gut is a hops-and-barley soda-pop belly, and after five days of no beer it shrinks. I am slower, but that’s something I kept thinking about and trying to do while at Exwork, to move as slow as most everyone else, and only now am I starting to get the hang of it.

I’d live in the Morphtown house that I’ve been looking at for years, designed by Jan Ternald. Despite all the cockeyed windows, the house has only three floors, with each floor having many split levels. The top floor is where we’d store memorabilia and holiday decorations. The middle floor is where my office and the kitchen would be.

The bottom floor is where my wife’s art room and dining room would be. Mixed in the levels would be bathrooms and a visitor’s room, and others rooms as needed, all of them very small.

There may or may not be enough yard room for chickens. But no such house exists, and so we’ll move to one not much different than now. I must warn my wife, though, that I will have mastered the technique of slow working by then.

Giving cheerfully and accepting gratefully

Success is a popular subject and an exciting attitude that fuels the imagination and drives our motivation. The fervent desire to succeed seems to be embedded within our DNA and I see nothing wrong with an honest inspiration to accomplish certain goals. Even the Bible talks about “pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” and refers to winning and being victorious as a spiritual blessing in accordance with God’s perfect will.

Yes, success can be satisfying if our motives are pure but the real objective may be to understand what it really means. It’s not a sin to be proud of our accomplishments, in fact, we pray for our children’s success and encourage them as they pursue their dreams.

However, good fortune even though associated with a healthy and normal progressive lifestyle can be interpreted differently according to whether we are pursuing our desires or following God’s instructions.

Wealth is usually associated with accomplishment but true success is not always dependent on money. Finances are a vehicle that can do amazing things when God is allowed to be in control and since He wants to be the ultimate decider of each individual’s direction, we acknowledge Him as the one who allows success to manifest. For those who claim to yield their will unto God, this obedience also includes all decisions including our business affairs. When Christ is allowed to become Lord of our heart we are also inviting Him to be our financial adviser. His vision is to use us as a vessel to pour through instead of us building huge bank accounts and hoarding earthly treasures. Our heavenly Father manages everything with perfect wisdom and holy truth and His plans are constantly trying to weave the paths of men and women together for the good of all.

Unfortunately, we have a tendency to be selfish and rebellious and are usually so focused on ourselves that we rarely comprehend or care what God is trying to tell us. Some might say they would be generous and help others if they had more resources but this is usually only an excuse for not giving a part of what they already have. Winston Churchill is quoted, “We make a living by what we get – we make a life by what we give.” It has been said that waiting until we are rich to bless others is a smokescreen trying to hide our lack of faith and love. Mother Teresa once said, “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” So, we can conclude that giving has everything to do with an attitude of compassion.

There are reasons why the Lord of heaven might open a door to wealth but there are many others that could explain why He keeps them locked. Whatever the case may be, He has the power and authority to bless us with rooms of gold but thankfully He also has the divine discernment to protect us from being ruined by it. He knows our intentions and what we will do before we are given success and I also believe there are special situations where we are tested to see if we have any inclination whatsoever to seek the bigger picture of why this is happening. God longs for His children to wake up and realize that we are just a spoke in the wheel and having our barns filled with plenty is His plan to use us as a distribution center. One of our Lord’s most notable attributes is giving and everyone who claims to be filled with His nature will recognize and cheerfully follow His promptings. We cannot outgive God as He is pleased when we become a trusted steward.

Collecting and accumulating can be a result of pride and create a false sense of power and security.

An obsession to accumulate could also possibly hinder our spiritual relationship with Christ and distract us from our divine destiny. Maya Angelou said, “when we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.” Instead of thinking that life is a game to see who can accumulate the most, may we realize from His perspective it’s actually about who can give the most away.

Mutton Busting Action at the Hernando County Fair PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHERYL CLANTON

The Hernando County Fair, held April 13- 21, 2018 featured a variety of youth livestock entertainment events including a Mutton Busting competition.

Mutton Busting is a rodeo type activity for children.

The idea is similar to bronc or bull riding. Kids gear up and hold on tight for a bumpy ride. While all the young contestants were brave and tried their best, Hailey Hutchinson was the big Mutton Busting champion this year at the Hernando County Fair.

the Union, Hernando County was deemed a county. Fort De Soto was named the county seat. N.G. Rowe was one of the early settlers and served as postmaster for the fort. Other early settlers included D.F. Thresher, and W.R. Mills.

Camps and Blockhouses In addition to the forts

there were also Camps or Blockhouses for defense in many of the local communities. Often these blockhouses also doubled as a church and community center. According to James Covington "Military camps were established between 1836 and 1837 at Camp Lindsay, Camp Allen, and Camp Broadnax. Civilian forts or blockhouses also were constructed to shelter the pioneer settlers."
