Septic to sewer conversions: who will pay, will it work? In 2016, the Florida Legislature passed the Florida Springs Protection Act. The act called for the creation of Basin Management Action Plans for major springshed systems in the state. Each BMAP is created by the Florida Department of Environmental Protec-
tion with input from local governments. The purpose of the BMAP is to create a roadmap for “Total Maximum Daily Load” or TMDL pollutant reduction. The main pollutant of concern for the Weeki Wachee Springshed is nitrates and one of the major sources they found to contribute to groundwater nitrates is septic systems. See SEWER, page 2

pring is a time for flowers to burst into bloom, trees to tremble with new leaves, showers to scrub the skies until a rainbow shows through — all signs of new life! Fittingly, the joyful religious events of this season in both Judaism and Christianity bear the promise of freedom and a new life for those who will believe. Though some solemn events were part of its past, a light-hearted spirit will mark Judaism’s ritual meal of the Seder this Saturday night launching Passover, a week-long celebration of the freeing of the Jews from slavery in ancient Egypt. hen playing baseball, whether for the first time or later in life, young individuals are taught the basics of the game: how to swing a bat, catch a fly ball, and run the bases. The same goes for historic Tom Varn Park in downtown Brooksville, which has been a staple of our community’s athletics, recreational or competitive at the interscholastic level. And on a crisp Sunday afternoon, the park would write another chapter in its legacy. Led by eight former Major League Baseball players, the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association offered some great lessons to roughly 100 local youth players in the Tampa Bay area. Of the eight legends that participated, nearly half have some form of ties to the area, whether it be local products of Hernando County itself or former greats who spent Hernando High's Bronson Arroyo recently retired from the Cincinnati Reds participated in the parts of their careers in Florida-based Legends for Youth Clinic at Tom Varn Park on Sunday. High Point residents honor military with Veterans Memorial BY SARAH NACHIN HERNANDO SUN STAFF
“A lot of good people kept coming together and everything fell into place.” This was how Raymond Thomas described the success of the Veterans' Memorial project at High Point Golf Community in Brooksville. Thomas, a Vietnam veteran and resident of the community, conceived the idea from a conversation he had with a neighbor one evening last February and

brought the idea before the High Point Board of Directors. “Everyone fell in love with it [the idea of a veterans' memorial] and supported us,” Thomas stated. After that, Ron Keiper and he formed a committee and got members of the Social Club, Art Club and other residents on board with the plan. The next step was getting local businesses to assist in various ways. “We went to Home Depot and See MEMORIAL, Page 14
