Opiate effects on the ones you love BY CHEYENNE GEER SPECIAL TO HERNANDO SUN

We all hear about the opiate epidemic that affects our beloved country and towns. The news never mentions the “behind the scenes” affects to the family and friends and many times, it goes unspoken. Drugs tend to leave a trail of emotional and mental tolls on the friends and family, and even though I don’t know how to begin to prevent the addictions, I personally have found myself, too, reminiscing on the memories that I buried for so long. Often, it begins as simple as distancing themselves from others. When I was a child, I bleakly recall very few occasions where I could look out into the audience of ceremonies and see my mother’s face. Everyone else would have both of their parents, despite many broken households, for support and I would have to try and excuse my mother for neglecting to come. It started with excuses as simple as; “I don’t feel well,” or, “prior arrangements” interfered, but eventually they were just that, excuses. Many times, I would

FACT CHECK: Florida House Republicans blocked debate on banning assault rifles

t is being widely reported that the Republicans in the Florida house blocked debate on banning weapons. This is a very misleading claim that we rate mostly false. The legislators voted to not debate then vote on a bill that they had not read. The legislature was working

on their normal business and Rep. Kionne McGhee a Democratic Representative from Miami and an attorney used a procedural rule that allows any member to make a motion to bring House Bill 219 (HB-219) out of committee and bring it to the floor. This motion is rarely used, members could only recall it being used twice in the last 12 years. Rep. McGhee said

“While this is an extraordinary procedural move, the shooting in Parkland demands extraordinary action.” Some students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High

School in Parkland, Florida were in the gallery when this happened and their agony has been widely shown. The students were unaware that what was going on See HB219, page 4

The climate and scenery of the “Sunshine State” has made Florida a very desirable place to live and attracts an enormous number of tourists each year. Most of Florida’s nearly 20 million residents live close to its 1,800 miles of coastline and another 100 million tour-

Her mission is to conserve the coastal and marine resources and enhance economic opportunities in the county. One of Scharf’s many remits has been to train residents in Hernando County to sample and test the waters along our coastline through a new See SEA GRANT, Page 13

ists are drawn here every year because of its bountiful ocean resources …and the numbers are still rising. Florida Sea Grant, a coastal and marine extension program within the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, (UF/ IFAS) conducts science-based outreach programs designed to conserve and sustain Florida’s precious coastal and ocean resources. “Healthy oceans and coastlines provide essential nursery grounds for fish, and homes for manatees, wading birds, and other wildlife,” said Brittany HallScharf, a Florida Sea Grant Extension
