Swan recalls years of service, activities Home Office Member Services Representative Carol Swan has retired after more than 20 years of employment. A retirement luncheon was held in her honor on July 31.

As a member of the Member Services Department, Carol answered phones, handled certificate loans, collections, payment posting, bank drafts and returns, backup death claims, reinstatements and more.

An active member of Mission-Alamo Lodge, Carol has been a Hermann Sons Life member since 1949. Both of her parents were members. They lived in Blanco and were members of Twin Sisters Lodge. When she was around 11 years old, she said the family moved to San Antonio and joined Mission Lodge (now Mission-Alamo).

Carol has been married to husband Terry for 60 years. They have two children, Shannon and Kevin, both members for more than 50 years, daughter-in-law Amy and granddaughter Kaylee, a life-long member. She is 21 and is a college student.

Carol said when Shannon was just three years old, she enrolled her in the San Antonio School of Dance. Carol became active not only in the lodge but in the Junior

Over the years, Carol said she has served Mission-Alamo Lodge as president, vice president and currently is serving as financial secretary/treasurer.

“I have participated in all lodge events, and volunteered for many, many activities,” Carol said. “I have also attended several HSL conventions and served on several committees.”

Carol fondly remembers volunteering at Hermann’s Happiness, an annual Fiesta event held at the San Antonio Home Association

years ago.

“We ran the hamburger booth,” she said. “That was a lot of fun. Many still ask about it today.”

She said she also has good memories of all the big Hermann Sons Christmas parties, picnics and Statewide rallies.

“They were always a lot of fun, and you met lots and lots of friends.”

Carol has been a San Antonio Livestock Exposition volunteer for more than 30 years, is a member of the Daughters of the Republic, Daughters of the American Revolution and the San Antonio Conserva-

tion Society.

She bowled for more than 40 years in leagues at the local, state and national levels and bowled for Hermann Sons Life during those 40 years. She was recognized this July at the HSL State Tournament for all her help through the years and received a bouquet of flowers.

She enjoys collecting snowmen and going to casinos.

Carol said she will miss working at the Home Office but will still be active in Mission-Alamo Lodge.

“I am planning a trip to Vegas in December, and I like going to Coushatta,” she said about her retirement plans.

Carol looks most forward to spending more time with her “furbabies.” She has two Chiweenies, a doodle mix and several cats. “They like having me home.”

“I have enjoyed working here. I have met lots of friends. We have been through good times and bad times, but we made it through. I do plan to keep in touch.”

Howie and Beau also got to spend some time with their cousins, Krypto and Oakley, and it was chaos as usual. Poor Oakley has been having some unexplained seizures off and on lately, so we’ve been especially worried about him. We are praying that the seizures stop and Oakley will not continue to experience them as they take a lot out of him.

Howie and Beau would like you to meet their new friend, Bailee.

This precious girl was rescued by a volunteer while they were assisting victims after the flooding in July. She ran right out in front of the volunteer’s car and while she had some minor injuries, she was thrilled to be rescued. No owners ever came forward, so the volunteer asked if HOTK9 could step in to help.

With that sweet face, who could say

no?!

Bailee is super playful with other dogs, walks nicely on a leash, and loves her toys. She’d make a wonderful addition to an active family or an active individual looking for a loyal companion.

Howie’s Happenings

By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO Howie and Beau kept up their usual rounds this month, making their regular stops at Whataburger, Wendy’s, and Freddy’s for their beloved hamburger patties. These boys do have their priorities.

While Howie tends to be more of a couch potato most of the time (as he is often described by those that get to know and love him) he will really get excited about a few things…those being food, especially watermelon, chicken and hamburger patties, and car rides.

He has started a habit of inserting his head in my lap whenever I eat.

He doesn’t seem to understand personal space or boundaries a whole lot, but he is always a good boy and never tries to steal food.

He seems to want to be as close as possible so that I don’t forget about him. One of our camp

counselors, Spooky, suggested that we try a local vendor in Comfort for watermelon for Howie, so we had to try them. Howie appreciated the suggestion greatly and has enjoyed an abundance of watermelon this summer.

Beau had a moment recently where he simply couldn’t stand it any longer and he had to go for a ride…apparently boredom had set in. He let us know by gently pushing

on Dave’s arm and chattering away in a fun little way he talks to us when he wants something. We couldn’t resist, so we loaded up and took the boys and drove through Landa Park and around New Braunfels, which did the trick.

The boys were able to visit their favorite vet while we were on an overnight trip to attend Corpus Christi Lodge’s Hooks game event.

Bowlers gather in San Antonio for annual tourney

By SANDRA JONES Tournament Secretary SAN ANTONIO – Looks like it is time to put another tournament to bed, but not without some thanks to the people who made it possible and to the bowlers for their participation.

Thanks to Communications Director Elaine Soto for all the wonderful publicity she did for the tournament and for coming out to take pictures and to Fraternal and Youth Foundation Director Tammi Sutherland for coming out and checking in bowlers and selling 50/50 tickets.

Thank you also to President and CEO Robin Czarnek and the Home Office for its support and contribution to the prize fund. You will never know how much the bowlers appreciate this gift.

The 61st Hermann Sons Life Bowling Tournament was held July 25-26 at Bowlero Thousand Oaks in San Antonio. This year we had 27 teams, up two from last year. There were 16 men’s teams and 11 women’s teams, which means we need to get out there and recruit more ladies.

There were bowlers from Boerne,

Oklahoma, Comfort, Fredericksburg, San Antonio, San Marcos, Fort Worth, Houston, Rockdale, Giddings, Dallas, La Grange and San Angelo.

Now to the bowling. We had a first this year. Tina Herzog and daughter Katlyn Dean won the women’s doubles, while James Schmidt and son Kevin Schmidt won the men’s doubles. So proud to see families bowling together and winning events together.

There were lots of high scores and way too many to list, but here are the highlights. Dance class registration deadline set for Oct. 1 The registration deadline for the HSL Youth Foundation Inc. Schools of Dance 2026-2027 seasons is Thursday, Oct. 1.

Dance classes are available to members and non-members who will be 3 to 17 years of age as of Sept. 1, 2026. Most classes begin in September.

Students may attend any of the schools of dance. The dance schools include Castroville, Cibolo, Corpus Christi, Devine, Hill Country, Hondo, Karnes City, La Vernia, Lone Oak, New Braunfels, North West Bexar, Seguin and Stockdale.

Classes are designed to teach the art of dance in a wholesome atmosphere of fun, work, physical exercise and fellowship. Each school of dance teaches varying degrees of tap, ballet and jazz. A recital is held at the end of the season.

Dance class tuition is $40 per month for nine months or you may choose to pay the full amount of $360 at registration. A $200 registration fee is due at the time of enrollment.

Active Hermann Sons Life members (policyholders) receive a waiver for the registration fee.

Tuition fees are charged to accounts provided the first of every month, unless that falls on a weekend and then it would be charged the following Monday. Tuition and registration fees pay expenses during the year and the Home Office cost for teacher salaries and any other expenses that are incurred.

Each teacher is an employee of HSL Youth Foundation Inc. The teacher(s) and at least two parent volunteers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school.

There will be several opportunities for parents to volunteer throughout the year. All parent volunteers are required to pass a yearly background check.

Help HSL sponsor a Boysville children’s birthday party Hermann Sons Life invites members, lodges and businesses to help sponsor a birthday party on Friday, Oct. 9, at Boysville, A Texas Home for Boys and Girls.

The party will be in honor of children and teens celebrating in October. There are several ways to help – volunteer during the party, contribute toward the meal, birthday cakes or gifts.

Rowdie started dancing with the HSL dance program at the age of 13 and became an assistant dance teacher at 14. She has trained in ballet, pointe, contemporary, jazz and tap with world renowned instructors and apprenticed under ballet master Keith Duncan.

What causes atrial fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is an irregular and often accelerated heart rhythm. According to the Mayo Clinic, left untreated, AFib can lead to blood clots in the heart, which increases the risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications.

How does AFib originate?

AFib most often is caused by changes to the heart’s tissue or the electrical signaling that helps the heart to beat. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says the electrical signals that make the heart pump start in a special area of the upper right chamber of the heart (right atrium) called the sinoatrial node. The signal makes both the right atrium and the left atrium

contract, which pumps blood to the lower heart chambers, or ventricles.

When a person has AFib, unusual electrical signals interrupt this process, causing the upper chambers of the heart to contract irregularly.

This compromises the ability of the upper and lower chambers of the

heart to work together to effectively pump blood.

What changes lead to AFib? Changes in the heart that can lead to AFib may include factors such as aging, heart disease, infection, or genetics. Also, tissue changes that affect the heart’s ability to contract

in rhythm may include fibrosis, inflammation, thinning or thickening of the heart walls, reduced blood flow to the heart, or a buildup of protein, cells or minerals in heart tissue.

Symptoms of AFib Symptoms of AFib may include any of the following.

• A fast, fluttering or pounding heartbeat • Chest pain • Dizziness • Fatigue • Lightheadedness • Shortness of breath • Weakness • Reduced ability to exercise The Mayo Clinic notes some people with AFib may not notice any symptoms at all, or symptoms may

come and go.

What raises risk of AFib? Some lifestyle choices or experiences can raise a person’s risk for AFib. • Alcohol consumption in large amounts.

• Use of illegal drugs.

• Participation in endurance sports or vigorous workouts.

• Smoking increases the risk of atrial fibrillation, according to many studies.

• Stressful situations, panic disorders and other types of emotional stress.

AFib will need to be diagnosed by a health care professional. Medicines may be needed to control the heart rate and prevent blood clots.

Warnings signs of social isolation

Human beings are wired for social connection, but millions of people confront isolation every day. Many of those people are seniors who lose contact with loved ones as time goes by. While temporary loneliness can be tolerated, prolonged isolation can be very harmful.

Research by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine found roughly one-quarter of American adults age 65 and older live in isolation. Identifying the early warning signs of isolation may help to prevent the physiological and psychological toll isolation can take.

Here are some signs of social isolation to watch for.

• Withdrawal from events: An early indicator of social isolation, according to Healthline, is a pattern of canceling plans, not answering phone calls, and withdrawing from established social circles or hobbies.

• Self-care is not prioritized: Another sign of social isolation is personal hygiene and other self-care habits like eating nutritious meals becomes neglected. It can signal that a person’s routine has changed due to a lack of social accountability.

• Home upkeep falters: A person who is withdrawing from social connections may feel it’s no longer necessary to keep a home

clean and tidy since they don’t anticipate visitors.

• Irritability and low mood: Persistent isolation can trigger a sense of hopelessness.

Individuals may become defensive or experience dramatic shifts in mood and sleep patterns, according to Healthline.

• Reliance on social media or television: Socially isolated individuals may turn to television or non-interactive social media scrolling as a proxy for human interaction, offers HealthDirect.

Social isolation can take its toll on anyone, particularly seniors. Individuals are urged to check in with friends, family or neighbors they suspect may be isolating to provide the companionship and help they may need.

Time outdoors positively affects mood, mental health Increasing time spent outdoors enjoying nature can positively affect mood and mental health. Generally speaking, outdoor enthusiasts tend to be happier overall. The American Psychological Association says spending time in nature is linked to both cognitive benefits and improvements in mood, mental health and emotional well-being. Both green spaces and blue (aquatic) spaces benefit overall well-being. Several years ago, the University of Derby in the United Kingdom conducted a study titled, “The 30 Days Wild.” The study encouraged people to do something wild once a day for 30 days. Participants shared that their connection to nature and doing things in nature created a significant increase in happiness and health.

People who spend more time outside can experience greater self-esteem, less stress, increased memory retention, and more positive body image. Natural environments also lower activity in the rumination area of the brain, decreasing negative, repetitive thoughts. Also, those who are outside more tend to be engaging in physical activities, and exercise directly correlates to better mental health.

Kitchen Korner Scalloped Potatoes 2 1/2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 3 tbsp butter 3 tbsp all-purpose flour 2 cups whole milk 1 cup heavy cream 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional) 1 small onion, very thinly sliced (optional) 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for au gratin style) Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.

Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.

Gradually whisk in the milk and cream until smooth.

Simmer for 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened.

Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Arrange one-third of the potato slices in the baking dish.

Add some onion slices if using.

Pour over one-third of the sauce.

Repeat the layers twice more.

Sprinkle cheese (optional) over the top layer for a richer, au gratin-style dish.

Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake another 25–30 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden.

Rest and serve: Let stand for 10–15 minutes before serving. This helps the sauce set.

Lemon Fluff 6 ounces lemon Jello 2 cups boiling water 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 20 ounces crushed pineapple with juice 16 ounces Cool Whip, 12 ounces for the fluff and reserve 4 ounces for topping and garnishing In a medium bowl, add the Jello and carefully pour in the boiling water. Whisk until fully dissolved, then set aside to cool for about 20 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and crushed pineapple. Using a hand mixer, start on low speed and gradually increase to medium-high, mixing for about 1 minute until combined.

Small bits of cream cheese are okay.

Pour the cooled Jello into the cream cheese and pineapple mixture.

Using a hand mixer, begin on low speed to prevent splashing, then increase to medium speed and mix until fully incorporated.

Add the Cool Whip to the bowl. Start mixing on low speed, then increase to medium-high and continue for about 2 minutes until everything is combined. The mixture will still be liquid, but it will set as it chills.

Transfer the mixture to a large glass serving bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until set. You can also use a 9x13 baking dish if preferred.

Serve with a dollop of Cool Whip and fresh berries or other fruit for garnish, if desired.

How to commit to service this Sept. 11 The terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, were tragic. But the resolve shown in the aftermath of the attacks, and the efforts of countless individuals who did whatever they could to help the victims of the attacks, showcased the best of humanity during some of the darkest days in world history.

Both the United States and Canada honor the efforts of those who sought to assist victims on 9/11 with national days of service.

The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is officially recognized in the United States. Residents are encouraged to honor first responders during these days of service, and also encouraged to engage in charitable work and good deeds. As the world prepares for the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, those who want to honor the legacy of the countless individuals who served in the aftermath of the attacks can do so in numerous ways.

• Become a volunteer first responder. First responders embodied the resolve and heroism that marked the response to the terror attacks of September 11. Volunteering as a local first responder in your community is a great way to honor the legacy of those who perished on 9/11 and the efforts of others who continued to serve in the aftermath of the attacks.

serve as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and firefighters, and joining such organizations is a great way to make an impact this September 11 and beyond.

• Donate to local first responder organizations. If you can’t volunteer with a local first responder organization, then offering financial support to such groups might be the next best way to express your appreciation for their efforts.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emergency medical services are rarely classified as “essential services.” Though that varies by community, EMS groups that rely on volunteers are likely underfunded, and the same may be true of local fire services. By supporting such groups with financial donations, donors can ensure the selfless men and women who volunteer in their communities have the equipment they need to stay safe and save lives.

• Work with 9/11 Meal Packs. On September 11, 2026, companies across the United States are uniting for the largest single-day meal pack in history.

Efforts in more than 50 cities across the U.S. are aspiring to pack 20 million meals for families in need. Roughly 50,000 volunteers are needed to meet that goal, and individuals can learn more at 911day.org/meal-packs/.

• Volunteer to help educate young people. As many as 100 million Americans were not alive on September 11, 2001. As communities commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, adults who were alive on that day can help to educate young people about the events of September 11, the aftermath of the attacks, and other notable details that people who were not alive on 9/11 may not know.

September 11 is recognized as a day of service in the United States. Giving back is a great way to honor the legacy of those who lost their lives and the millions more who served in the aftermath of the attacks.

Essential components to consider for an effective estate plan Estate planning can help solidify finances and secure a person’s legacy upon their death. Despite that, this crucial and useful step is often delayed and sometimes even avoided entirely. Modern estate planning is a vital component that can preserve assets and shield family members from emotional and financial turmoil during a stressful time, according to Charles Schwab.

An effective estate plan goes far beyond a single legal document.

Attorneys typically advise five essential documents to cover both asset management and health care transitions. Here’s a deep look at the essential components of estate planning.

• A last will and testament: A will outlines how tangible and intangible assets should be distributed A will also is where parents appoint legal guardians for minor children.

• A living will: Also called an advance directive, this explicitly states an individual’s preferences regarding end-of-life medical treatments, such as mechanical ventilation or artificial nutrition, says the National Institute on Aging.

Despite the critical protection these documents offer, a gap remains between the necessity of estate planning and actual follow through by the public. According to data from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority National Financial Capability Study, only 54 percent of surveyed investors have a will in place. Among the greater adult population, that percentage drops significantly, often driven by

the misconception that a person is not old enough or wealthy enough to warrant an estate plan. Without these legal designations, the responsibility to dictate asset distribution will fall to the court, where the deceased’s actual preferences may not be taken into consideration.

Ultimately, estate planning ensures that a person’s final chapters are defined by their own choices, shielding loved ones from administrative chaos and securing a family’s financial future. It’s important that all adults speak with a qualified attorney about an estate plan at their earliest convenience.

Three metrics to help gauge financial health Effective money management can help men and women achieve their short - and long-term goals.

Wise investment strategies and a commitment to saving for retirement are great ways to manage money over the long haul, but it’s important to seek ways to do so in the short-term as well.

Monitoring financial health is a short-term strategy that can keep individuals on a path toward long-term security. While various metrics can be looked to as indicators of financial health, adults can keep these three variables in mind as they look to utilize short-term strategies to ensure their longterm success.

1. Debt-to-income ratio: Debtto-income ratio can be a good indicator of financial health. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau defines debt-to-income ratio (DTI) as all your monthly debt

payments divided by your monthly gross income. Lenders utilize DTI to determine the creditworthiness of loan applicants, but individuals also can use it as a metric to gauge their financial health. Monthly debt payments include mortgages, auto loans, student loans, and other debt payments, including credit cards. Individuals whose debt payments total $2,000 per month and who earn a gross monthly income of $6,000 have a 33 percent DTI. The credit experts at Experian suggest a DTI of 35 percent or less is indicative that debt is being handled well, so that’s a figure to keep in mind.

2. Savings balances: Savings accounts don’t generate as much interest as they did throughout the 1980s and 1990s. According to Nasdaq, savings interest rates climbed as high as 8 percent in the 1980s, but have fallen below 0.25 percent

since the financial crisis of 2008.

That’s led some to devalue savings, but savings balances can be a good indicator of financial health.

A substantial savings account can help individuals avoid taking on debt when costly emergencies and expenses arise unexpectedly, thus helping them keep their DTI in a financially advantageous range.

3. Credit score: Credit score is another strong, and easily accessible, indicator of personal financial health. Individuals can now access their credit scores for free each month through their banks and credit card providers. Experian notes that credit scores range from 300 to 850, and where a score falls in that range can indicate if a person is managing credit in a healthy or unhealthy way. Experian reports scores 740 and above are very good, while scores between 670 and 739 are considered good. Scores

between 300 and 579 are considered poor, while a score between 580 and 669 is considered fair.

Scores below 669 indicate there’s room to use credit more wisely, which involve reducing reliance on consumer credit, making payments

on time and ensuring payments are more than the monthly minimum.

These three metrics and others can be utilized by individuals looking to gauge their financial health in an effort to realize their shortand long-term goals.

How reading benefits young brains Reading is a beloved pastime that’s having a moment. A number of variables have helped to renew people’s interest in reading. BookTok, a popular subcommunity on the social media platform TikTok in which users create videos to recommend and discuss books, is one such variable.

The BookTok trend has helped to spark and revive many people’s interest in reading, and that’s paid dividends for the bookseller Barnes & Noble, which plans to open 60 new stores in 2026 after opening 30 new stores in 2023, 61 in 2024 and 67 in 2025.

Reading more also pays considerable dividends for readers, particularly school-aged book lovers. Research has found that reading

has a notable impact on brain development in children.

• Reading can foster critical thinking skills.

Reading fosters critical thinking skills by engaging readers in a story and encouraging them to ask questions about its characters and plot. The tutoring experts at Readability, who specialize in helping a diverse group of readers in making the shift from learning to read to reading to learn, note that reading helps students assess situations logically and form reasoned opinions.

• Reading can help build language skills.

Reading helps children build their vocabularies by enabling them to read new words. Reading aloud to children can be especially beneficial

That can spark interest in other subjects at school, including science, mathematics and art.

• Reading can benefit youngsters’ attention spans. Modern children are inundated with

stimuli that does not necessarily foster longer attention spans. Social media videos and even some children’s television programming may have an adverse effect on kids’ ability to build a strong attention span. Reading helps kids to strengthen their focus by requiring them to concentrate on a narrative and process information as the story unfolds. That requires kids to maintain their attention for far longer than the average social media video.

Reading has a profound impact on the development of young children’s brains. That makes it both an enjoyable and effective pastime.

Once a new school year begins, students soon find themselves back in the hustle and bustle.

Extracurricular activities likely will figure prominently in students’ and parents’ schedules.

Extracurriculars offer many benefits to students, but also come with a considerable commitment of time and even money. The University of Florida notes that a study of more than 13,000 tenth graders found that, on average, the teens participated in two to three extracurriculars and spent about five hours per week on them. While moderate involvement in these extracurriculars was found to improve academic performance, at very high levels of involvement (more than 14 hours a week), teens’ academic well-being declined.

The most obvious benefit of extracurriculars is spending time with like-minded peers who share the same interests. But there are many additional and lesser-known benefits of extracurricular activities.

• Take healthy risks. Extracurriculars enable students to try something out of their comfort zone. This is low-stakes risk-taking where students can try, sometimes fail, and brush themselves off to try again to build confidence.

• Become civically minded. The University of Florida also notes a study of 1,000 teens who were followed from high school into young adulthood as a testament to the potential benefits of extracurriculars. Study participants who were involved in extracurriculars were more likely to vote, volunteer and be psychologically healthy, well-educated adults.

• Strengthen executive functioning skills. Extracurriculars can help students coordinate complex, non-academic tasks, such as organizing a play or musical performance. They also help to rewire the brain to handle stress, collaborate and manage multifaceted projects.

• Motivate kids to exercise. Though not all extracurriculars are physical in nature, many are.

Sports help kids be more active in ways that may not seem like the work of heading to the gym, according to WebMD. Those who regularly exercise are at lower risk for many health conditions, including high cholesterol and obesity.

• Students can reinvent themselves. Extracurriculars offer students a chance to get a break from how they may be seen at home or in school. If a student is dubbed “the science kid” in a different setting, an extracurricular may afford him or her a chance to try on a creative persona.

Similarly, a typically quiet student may be gregarious when participating in the school play. Extracurriculars enable reinvention and can help kids find their real voices.

• Make learning fun. School can be taxing on students, especially by the time they reach high school. Extracurriculars can renew students’ passions, especially when they choose an activity for themselves that they truly enjoy.

Extracurricular activities enable students to adopt new personas, make friends, boost physical and mental health, and realize long-term advantages as they age.

Vineta SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will hold the highly anticipated 125th anniversary celebration on Thursday, Sept. 3, at the San Antonio Home Association Ballroom, 515 S. St. Mary’s St. Volunteers will meet on Sept. 2 at 10:30 a.m. to set up the venue, lay out the scrapbooks for viewing, and enjoy a pizza lunch together.

Members got a sneak peek at the official anniversary bags, which attendees will get to take home along with extra muffins. The Hermann Sons Brass Quintet plus drum set, will perform at the celebration.

Party volunteer roles are locked in! Genny Kraus will handle the welcome; Beth Byron will lead the invocation and closing prayer; Carol Bielke will manage guest introductions; birthdays, and splitthe-pot; Emily Roberts will handle the membership pin presentations; and Ashlee Belew and Irene Kace will coordinate attendance prizes.

Lodge News Schwertner BARTLETT – Schwertner Lodge will meet on Monday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m.

Speakers at the August meeting were Vice President of Sales Teresa Saathoff and Director of Compliance and Agent Training Shelly Solorzano.

The Annual Schwertner Barbecue will be held on Sunday, Oct. 4.

Lodge members will help with the barbecue and will have a raffle to benefit the Schwertner Community Center and the lodge. All members are encouraged to attend and volunteer.

Lodge News Gulf LEAGUE CITY – Gulf Lodge will meet on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. at Spring Creek Barbecue in League City.

Members had a fun-filled outreach event at Hope Village in which lodge volunteers oversaw bingo games and hosted an ice cream social.

We honor the enthusiasm, volunteerism, and fresh ideas that our young people bring to the lodge! And toward their education, we award scholarships to recipients who meet application criteria and are actively involved in lodge activities.

Congratulations to our nine Gulf Lodge Scholarship recipients who are pursuing higher education or technical certifications. The recipients were Hudson Alworth, Madison Alworth, Mia Baca, Austin Davis, Autumn Davis, Brooke Davis, Maverick Garner, Donovan Guzman and Shelby Smith.

At the June meeting, guest speaker Breana Carter of the Houston SPCA spoke about compassionate care of animals specific to the Houston area chapter. The Lodge presented her with a donation for the organization.

Lodge News Spring Branch BULVERDE – Spring Branch Lodge will meet on Sunday Sept. 13, at the Bulverde Community Center at 1:30 p.m. Doors will open earlier for visiting.

The July meeting was held at the Knibbe Ranch with special guests Vice President of Finance Liz Napier and her husband Mark.

Liz presented membership pins to the following members who were in attendance, Chuck Knibbe, an 80year pin and Robin Armke received her 60-year pin. Mildred Bartles has received her 80-year pin but was not in attendance.

Liz updated the membership on Hermann Sons Life news from the Home Office including current rates on annuity plans and the recent flooding in Comfort and Kerrville.

Camp at the Hilltop site was not affected as it sits approximately 155’ above the Guadalupe River. All campers were safe and enjoyed indoor activities.

Financial Secretary Karen Woody reminded members to contact the Home Office to update addresses and emails so the lodge can get the word out to more members. Forms to make such changes are also available on the HSL website: hermannsonslife.org.

Spring Branch Lodge has a Facebook page, and the Hermann Sons Life News is available on the website. If members prefer a paper copy of the newspaper, reach out to the Home Office to be added to the mailing list.

Lodge News Lockhart LOCKHART – Lockhart Lodge will meet on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 4:30 p.m. at Smitty’s Market, 208 S. Commerce St. The lodge has two new members, Morgan Cora Barnett and Ethan James Barnett.

At the August meeting, a thank you note from graduating senior Bryce Unfried was read thanking the lodge for his graduation gift.

He stated he was looking forward to working at camp this summer.

She thanked the lodge for her graduation gift and said she planned to use it for dorm room essentials. She noted how much meeting attendance has meant to her over the past years.

Ivy Howard was proud to be recognized at the meeting for her performance in the HSL Devine School of Dance “Storybook Songs” recital in May. Margaret, Madeline and Maria Hyland performed in the Corpus Christi school of dance recital, “On Broadway” in June.

Mills (Emelia) Duewall shared her experience at HSL Camp this past summer. She swam and fished on the first sunny day and then along came the rain and more rain. She enjoyed the time they had playing inside and even had a paper snowball fight in the dorm. She said she enjoyed the dance and that overall “it was super-duper fun!”

Deanville DEANVILLE – Deanville Lodge will meet on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the lodge hall. The annual drive through roast beef dinner to benefit Hospice will be held on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A replenishment blood drive for Lynnlee Kocurek is scheduled for Aug. 30 from noon to 4:30 p.m. at the hall.

The lodge provided glue sticks for the annual Burleson County Expo.

Approximately 400 students received school supplies at the event.

YORKTOWN – Yorktown Lodge is gearing up for the annual Family Western Week, it’s largest fundraiser of the year. In addition to the music lineup, the lodge will host a Barbecue Cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 17.

YOAKUM – Hochheim Prairie Lodge will not meet in September. The next meeting is Sunday, Oct. 4, at 5 p.m. at Turner Hall.

In August, President Janet Zabransky and Financial Secretary Carolyn Hoepfl delivered lodge donations of colored markers, Play-Doh and bubbles to the Dewitt Lavaca Special Education Cooperative.

Janet read a note from Yoakum ISD Superintendent Tom Kelley thanking the lodge for supporting the youth of the community through

scholarships. The lodge recipients this year were Aiden Alvarez and Colbie Falcon Roberta Wenzel reported sending a sympathy card to the family of Mark Vaclavik. A moment of silence was observed in his honor.

Anniversary honorees were Charlie and Carolyn Hoepfl, 54 years.

Lodge News Seguin Seguin Lodge held the annual Summerfest on Sunday, Aug. 9. Members from Marion, Stern, Cibolo, Laubach, Pershing, and Kypfer-Salge lodges were in attendance. Everyone enjoyed a catered meal of pork steak with potatoes and green beans, and a variety of desserts shared by members. Guessing games and bingo were played and regular attendance prizes were awarded. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Post 245, 618 E. Kingsburg St. in Seguin.

Weesatche Lodge recently held an appreciation luncheon for local precinct workers. Everyone enjoyed a good visit, a delicious lunch and treat bags to take back to the job. HOUSTON – Houston Lodge will meet Monday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. at Logan’s Roadhouse at 12950 N. W. Fwy. At the July meeting, members were asked to help find a meeting place for October since Don Jose’s Restaurant has permanently closed.

Agent Gary Falkenberg gave his report that included MYGA rates and cemetery plot costs. He reminded members a Hermann Sons Life estate planner is available on the HSL website.

President Patricia Bushman was on the sick list but reported she is doing much better.

Kypfer-Salge NEW BRAUNFELS – Kypfer-Salge Lodge will meet on Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall. The lodge will provide barbecue and sausage from Bill Miller’s, and members are asked to bring sides and/or desserts.

The next Bunco party will be held Friday, Sept. 18. The entry fee is $5 per person and the doors open at 6 p.m. with games starting at 7 p.m. Bring your favorite drink and a snack to share.

At the August meeting, members voted to purchase new stackable chairs for the lodge. The new chairs will be nicer and more comfortable than the folding chairs used now.

An officer’s meeting was recently held. The calendar of events for the remainder of the year was discussed as well as the Make a Difference Day project. The lodge will donate teddy bears and blankets to the Schertz Funeral Home for bereaved parents of infants.

For the Matching Funds event this

year, a raffle with be held and prizes include a handmade windchime, a handmade wreath, a quilt from Quilts of Valor, an air fryer and a $75 gift card to H-E-B. The lodge also has plans to donate nonperishable items and essentials to the Randolph Area Christian Assistance Program (RACAP).

With the upcoming holidays, the lodge has some fun things planned!

LA GRANGE – Rutersville Lodge will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall. The lodge will provide pork ribs for the meal.

At the August meeting, Board Director Theresa Garlin gave an update on the June Board of Directors meeting.

The lodge welcomed new member Evelyn Hartmann.
