The benefit is available to policyholders who will be 3 to 17 years of age as of Sept. 1, 2022, and whose life insurance premiums and dues are current. This member benefit is designed to teach the art of dance in a wholesome atmo sphere of fun, work, physical exercise and fellowship. Each school of dance teaches varying degrees of tap, ballet and jazz. Because dance classes are a member ben efit, there is no monthly tuition. However, there is a one-time registration fee. This fee is determined by the school to help pay for facilities and cover day-to-day operational costs. The amount of the fee varies from school to school. That fee will be paid at the time of registration. This fee is only refund able prior to the start of dance classes. The Home Office also collects an assessment fee at the time of registration that helps offset operational costs the Home Office covers for all schools. This fee is nonrefundable. Each teacher is an employee of Hermann Sons Life. The teacher(s) are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school. Par ents can volunteer in various capacities, in cluding serving as class monitors, working on fund-raising projects and helping with recital. A background check is required for all volunteers. The background check form is available through the school of dance teacher. Deadline to register is Oct. 1. Most classes begin after Sept. 1. Tammi can be reached at the Home Office at 800-234-4124, ext. 239 or 210-226-9261, ext.For239.policy and membership information, call 877-437-6266.

As you may know, Hermann Sons Life was founded by Ger man immigrants. In the early years of Hermann Sons Life’s history, you had to be of Ger man descent to become a member. Over the years, we have recognized the need to be more inclusive and open mem bership to everyone. Does this mean we’ve aban doned our German roots? Abso lutely not! What it does mean is that we’re sharing those German roots with the rest of Texas and advancing the fraternal move ment at the same time. With most of us being an amalgama tion of many ancestries anyway, it’s a lovely opportunity to share German traditions and history while honoring the varying tra ditions of all our members.

Speaking of German roots… if you haven’t had a chance to attend Beethoven Mannerchor in downtown San Antonio, it’s a great time to do so. Beethoven Mannerchor is a community devoted to preserving German heritage and culture and is a wonderful ambassador for Her mann Sons Life and our mem bers as well. If you haven’t had a chance to connect with your lodge mem bers recently, I encourage you to do so. It’s a special blessing to be able to break bread with your fellow members. We have so much fun together… picnics, convention, bingo, community service and most recently our annual bowling tournament just to name a few. Now that I have had the opportunity to get to know the members of my own lodge, when we attend, it feels like we’re visiting our fam ily.I am so filled with gratitude to be a member and to be able to serve you. Hermann Sons Life is such an amazing organization made up of the best people on the planet! I am thrilled that we are able to share Hermann Sons Life with all of Texas and from all walks of life. Hermann Sons Life is where friendship love and loy alty abound, but so do faith, pa triotism and community service. You, our members, are what makes Hermann Sons Life spe cial. Here’s to many, many more years of our Hermann Sons Life community! Prost!

We all need community and what a wonderful community we have here at Hermann Sons Life! What started out as an idea from our founding fathers is now a part of communities through out Texas. One need only visit a lodge meeting, take a tour of the Camp or go to a dance re cital to see the number of lives Hermann Sons Life impacts. Whether you are celebrating an event with your fellow mem bers, helping serve a member in their time of need or gathering in fellowship, it’s all needed and certainly never more so than in our post-pandemic world. Recently, I had a member in quire about the change in the German heritage requirement at Hermann Sons Life. Upon an swering this question, I realized that many of our members may have the same question.

How many of you have ever been pulled over for speeding, having a broken taillight or you have been in a minor fender bender? The first thing the police officer will ask is to see your driv er’s license and proof of insur ance. You can actually get a ticket for not having proof of insurance. A lot of us know the feeling of re lief after the police officer takes your insurance card and license and then returns to your car and hands you a warning ticket. Life insurance is not required by law but think of the relief you would feel when you lost a loved one and find out they had the where withal to have purchased life in surance.Itisa fact that we are all go ing to pass away at some point (hopefully after a long, healthy and happy life) – if there is life insurance to pay for your final ex penses and to protect your fam ily financially, wouldn’t you think that life insurance would be re quired like auto insurance?

I have sold insurance for 16 of the last 18 years that I have worked for Hermann Sons Life. I always thought it was easy to sell life insurance because once I explained the benefit of a life insurance policy, along with the protection and peace of mind from having coverage, my cli ents understood its importance. Some people would say they were going to think about it, but the ones that really understood the importance would apply for a policy during our meeting or get back with me very soon after.

Amanda F. Hobbs, R. Juarez, Bailey J. Jupe,

It is great that September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, but in my mind, life insurance is something you need and should be aware of every month. Life insurance is meant to pro tect your family when you pass away. It can replace your lost income, help your family stay in their home, cover funeral ex penses, pay off debt and most of all, life insurance can be afford able.We all hear on the news talk of Go Fund Me accounts to help with someone’s funeral and it seems someone is always hav ing a barbecue plate sale to raise funds for a family who has lost a loved one. You can make sure your family has protection with life insurance in case the unex pected happens.

To sum it all up, since having life insurance is not required by law, hopefully it isn’t one of those things on your to-do-list that you have been meaning to get around to. If you have been too busy, think it will be too expen sive or think there is no way you can qualify, please call Hermann Sons Life today. We will answer your questions and help you fig ure out a type of policy and cov erage amount that will work for you and your family. You have nothing to lose and the peace of mind you will have knowing your family is protected will be price less.

There are different types of life insurance, and a Hermann Sons Life agent can help you figure out the type of coverage and amount of coverage that will fit into your family’s budget.

Hermann Sons Life participates annually in Life Insurance Awareness Month. It is a national awareness campaign that the nonprofit Life Happens created and coordinates every September.

Wow! As I sit here in my quiet office at Hilltop Camp, I have a little time to look back and evaluate the summer. What did we do well? Where did we come short of our own and our parents extremely high expectations? This evaluation process is critical in the continuous mission to provide our junior members the best possible sum mer camp experience. The evaluation process is never done in a vacuum. I evaluate the summer based on review ing the Camp from four perspectives:

• The parents’ perspective (using the Survey Monkey surveys)

• Operating a coed session of camp?

By IAN BRASSETT Executive Camp Director

CAMP, Pg. 9

Page 8 – Hermann Sons Life – September 2022

• Adding an additional mini-camp ses sion?No changes have been made or planned. These are just questions we plan to ask parents about in a survey. How can Hermann Sons Life Camp bet ter serve our campers and parents?

Executive director reviews 2022 CampsurveyCampseason2022results

• The camper’s perspective (using the camper surveys)

• Operating a two-week camp session (campers stay for 13 days)?

• Operating a teen camp at Riverside and a junior camp at Hilltop for one of the sessions?

• My perspective through the summer at camp and working with the staff

• The staff’s perspective (using the Survey Monkey surveys, evaluations, etc.) and I look at all four sources of feedback to come up with my overall evaluation of the Camp and look for ways and areas we need to improve upon as we move into summer 2023. The facility has benefitted from a lot of TLC over the past four years. Improve ments at both Riverside and Hilltop are clear for all to see. We are not finished improving the facilities. Everything is possible with time and money, both of which are typically in short supply. High on everyone’s list are the bathrooms on Riverside.Looking at the big picture, Camp was a huge success this summer. Overall, the campers enjoyed their summer in Comfort and loved their counselors. Our counselors scored extremely well this summer in both the parental and camper surveys. Most pleasing was the kind words used to describe our coun selors. Who were our campers’ favorite counselors? See results on right. Camp is not a perfect science. There will always be ups and downs in a camper’s stay with us. Our counsel ors are critical in helping our campers through those lows. What I’m most pleased with is the bal ance of overseas and American staff on this list. It is a wonderful balance at both the Hilltop and Riverside camps. It did not take long for our staff to gel as a cohesive team. Credit here must go to Ding and Smudge, directors, who, while working with limited senior staff (due to COVID) were able to create a great bond between the new staff and the returning staff who had risen through the ranks from camper to the CIT pro gram and eventually the junior staff program.Basedoff the numbers alone, campers and parents were also very pleased with the summer camp. A total of 96 percent indicated the camp was responsive to their child’s needs with only three sur veys indicating we were not responsive.

See

Back to this summer’s surveys. Food is always a wonderful topic of debate. We tried a few new items for the menu this summer. Some worked, some did not. It is not always possible to please all our campers. Clearly when three of our meals appear on both the campers’ favorite and least favorite list! That is why we always had peanut butter and jelly, cereal and fresh fruit available for our campers at each meal. The salad bar was also full of options at lunch and dinner. Striking a balance is important.

After my vacation, in late August/Sep tember, I will be reaching out to all par ents that completed their surveys and asked to speak to the director. I’m delighted that when asked would they consider Hermann Sons Life Camp again for their child, the response was amazing. While we’d all like the sur veys to be a 100 percent they’d return, there’s a lot to unwrap when discussing summer camp. Surveys really help me look at the program we are operating and they help myself, Vice President of Members Benefits Cecily Kelly and the board of directors make decisions about the programs, activities and ses sions we offer. Our job is to provide a camp that ser vices our junior members and their par ent’s needs. What do you, the parents and campers think about:

Camp director reports a successful 2022 season

September 2022 – Hermann Sons Life – Page 9

Having options is also very im portant. The board and Cecily have been wonderful in allowing me to provide our campers with a menu that suits most palettes and provides options for some of our pickier campers. The evening activities were af fected by the weather and COV ID this summer, but that did not stop the campers from enjoying their nighttime activities. When we were not able to transport the boys to Riverside for the dance, it did not stop the girls from hav ing a great time! Many seasoned Riverside campers during that session indicated they preferred the dance without the boys!

While camp provided our campers with a safe, caring sum mer environment, we always strive to do better. This sum mer we had a very young senior staff with only two returning staff members coming in from leadership positions in previous summers. These staff members excelled in many, if not all of the most important areas includ ing providing close supervision and support to our counselors, conducting activities safely, implementing creative and fun evening activities and most im portantly carefully monitoring our campers’ health and happi ness. The senior staff was great thisAssummer.aCamp, we need to do a better job distributing the mail. Not only the mail that is picked up at the post office, but also the emails through the Camp App and with the mail dropped off on arrival day. We must also do a better job handling the canteen, vouchers and money. Parents also need to do a better job by planning ahead and purchasing vouchers online Communicatingearlier.with par ents about the bunking poli cies, while clearly written, was not repeated enough. There are rules we follow when bunking campers for the betterment of the Camp and all of our campers. Dorms where this was not fol lowed this summer (my mistake) showed a slight dip in the scores of the non-friend group campers compared to the average. What are these policies?

Cont’d from Pg. 8

• We do not guarantee bed nor dorm placements

• We limit the bunk requests to three•Campers must be within two years of each other in age (pref erably one)

• We will split large friend groups up between multiple dorms•We do not bunk campers without a Health Form on file.

The biggest takeaway from the camper surveys and evening ac tivities is that we need to make the dance longer. These com plaints came mainly from the older campers (at both sites). No surprises there! I will get to gether with my senior staff in the spring and we’ll come up with a way to give the older campers more time at the dance. Interest ingly, the dance went from third to second most popular evening activity at the boy’s camp this summer. I’d love to know why. If I guessed the reason, it would be that we played a lot of line dance music and danced at most meals this summer, so many more campers already knew the songs and dances. I love reading what the camp ers’ favorite and least favorite things about Camp are. I love knowing that the campers love their friends and more impor tantly love making new friends. I love knowing they enjoy their counselors and the activities. Of ten with the surveys, it’s difficult to know what direction to take. We have complaints about the rest period for being both too long and not long enough. I agree with everything each camper writes. Their opinion is their reality. Our job is to make sure that we communicate clearly with both the parents and the campers. I look at the surveys and try to establish ways to mitigate the camper’s (and parent’s) angst. While I cannot do much about the heat, we can, as a camp look at bringing more shade into the Camp and open areas. The pop-up tents do not last. Perhaps a project of plant ing more trees (volunteer proj ect?), adding more fans to Rattle snake or having Clay build more shelters in strategic spots might be helpful or a combination of all three. All take money and time, both are limited in today’s tough economy.Theimplementation of the new elective program this sum mer increased the scores for our daily program. I’m happy about this – but certainly not satisfied. It was a new program for both the campers and staff and for the first summer, it was a success. Moving forward, we need to do a better job in giving our campers more diversified activ ity choices. We need to ensure the campers know what activi ties are available to them sooner. We will work on this in the off season.Thetraditional program of ac tivities for half of the day went well. When using the camp ers top five activity choices to schedule their three daily activi ties, 98 percent of the campers received their selections. Eighty percent received their top three and when using their top four choices, this percentage rose to 92Wepercent.willaim to do better next summer. One issue that will need to be solved is getting the activity choices from the parents and their camper earlier. Get ting the activity selection forms early plays a big part in campers getting their preferred choices. We will be evaluating in the fall which activities are not being chosen and which ones are most popular to see if there are ways to increase attendance while not reducing the fun!

PHOTOS: We posted thou sands of photos each week. They are available on the Her mann Sons Life App for you to download and enjoy. Share them with your friends and family. During the summer we post photos when time permits. The campers come first. That is always my staff’s num ber one priority. While I’d like to be more consistent post ing the photos throughout the week/summer, it is not always possible. I’m pleased with the work that was done this sum mer and the amount of photos taken and the quality of some of the photos. Again, next sum mer we will strive to improve. I will note that answering emails and texts regarding the “pho tos on the App” throughout the summer takes valuable time away from working with the campers and takes up time that could be spent posting the photos. I know the impor tance of the photos more than anyone. However, “proof of life” and ‘I’m dying” texts and emails do not help. The next step for me is a short vacation to catch up on some reading. Then we begin the process of preparing for summer 2023 – planning our facility improvements, sum mer scheduling and budget ing. Staffing, believe it or not, begins in September/October along with CIT mailings and CIT-1 interviews and junior staff Interviews from our crop of excellent CIT-2 campers. In September, we will have a Lifeguard Instructor Training Class over Labor Day Week end.
