Marketing Department launches new campaign SAN ANTONIO – “Get the most out of life – insurance” is the slogan for a new advertising campaign launched in September by the Marketing Department. The campaign is designed to increase awareness of Hermann Sons Life. The ultimate goal is to increase membership by educating people about Hermann Sons Life and the added value it offers. “We are more than a life insurance company – much more,” Marketing Manager Letricia Rodriguez said. “We believe that when people get to know us and learn more about our unique programs and benefits they will want to do business with us.” The campaign includes radio commercials
that are airing on San Antonio radio stations including KONO (classic hits), KONO-
AM (oldies), KTKX (classic rock), KJXK (adult hits), KSMG (today’s hits), KQXT (80s and 90s), KXXM (pop) and the Pandora and iHeart Radio apps. The campaign will also include ads on Facebook and the mySA.com website as well as an email campaign. The “Get the most out of life – insurance” slogan fits well with the rebranding that was conducted in 2016 that lead to the adoption of Hermann Sons Life as the official name. If you live in the San Antonio area, be listening for the radio commercial and be watching for the ads on Facebook and elsewhere. The focus of this campaign is the San Antonio area. Based on its success, other major metropolitan areas will be added.
Dance registration deadline extended to Oct. 16 SAN ANTONIO – Registration has been extended for the 2020-2021 dance year. The deadline has been extended from Oct. 1 to Oct. 16. The application deadline for new members who want to dance is now Oct. 12. Classes are under way in most of the locations. Parents will be contacted by their instructor and/or parent liaisons about the time and location of dance classes. In the September issue of the newspaper, parents were informed about the safety protocols that have been put in place with regard to COVID-19. “We want to reassure parents that we are taking all of the necessary precautions,” Vice
President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly said. “We believe it is important for our young dancers to get back to class. Dance is an excellent way of expressing themselves and giving them back some sense of normalcy. We will, of course, respect the decision made by our parents and wish our students nothing but the best whether they return to class or not.” Anyone needing assistance with registration is asked to call the Member Benefits Department at the Home Office. New single premium plan added SAN ANTONIO – The Sales Department has announced a new life insurance plan that has been added to the Hermann Sons Life product portfolio. It is called the Single Premium Life Plan and is available to juniors (ages 0-17) and adults (ages 18-70). This is a traditional whole life plan that
is available in amounts starting at $10,000 for adults and $15,000 for juniors. The maximum amount is $1 million. If you are interested in learning more about this new plan, contact an agent or call the Home Office at 877-437-6266 and someone will put you in touch with an agent.

A Message from the Board By SANDRA JONES Chair of the Board The world is a different place and we have had to make adjustments in our daily lives to deal with it . We now have to wear masks and social distance when we leave home . With these precautions in place we hope to overcome this pandemic and return to a normal life . The Board of Directors met Aug . 3 at the Home Office . Our meeting in May was postponed due to the pandemic so this was a day filled with reports and decisions . We began the day by meeting with the vice presidents and marketing manager . Marketing Manager Letricia Rodriguez gave an update on the Hermann Sons Life App, merchandise purchases, the merchandise store and plans for the future on social media platforms . Vice President of Sales Tim Kolbe reported on sales and the regional sales managers and the territory for which they are each responsible . Due to COVID-19, sales were down for the second quarter . With the new regional sales managers in place he hopes to recruit more agents and reach out to current agents to help them write more business . He and his team were still working to get the new single premium product approved . Since the meeting, that product has been approved by the state and it is already being sold by agents . He reported it was a tough decision to cancel Agents’ Awards Weekend and the Con-
tinuing Education Workshop . He hopes for a brighter future in applications, premium income and new agents . Vice President of Information Technology Matt Walker presented his outline and said several projects have been completed . The policy administration system conversion is still on track for late 2021 if all lights stay green . Vice President of Operations Samantha Schulmeier discussed the coronavirus and how it is impacting Hermann Sons Life operations . She and her staff have been working with situations that have presented themselves when working with companies that we do business with that also have been impacted . She also spoke on the CARES ACT RMD waiver information she was going to be sending out to IRA holders . This has since been done . Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly went over events that have been cancelled and plans for 2021 . Cancelling Camp, Family Fun Day and Statewide Rally was a hard decision . The Retirement Home is still closed to visitors . Dance registration is under way and new COVID-19 regulations are in place . The septic system work at Riverside is complete and Camp merchandise is available online for purchase . Vice President of Finance Mary Pruitt gave an update on the financials and a brief summary of new employees in her department and their duties . She is also working on various conversion projects for 2020 .
The Board thanks them for their reports and keeping the directors updated on projects . The Board will meet again in October . The Home Office is still closed to visitors, but hopefully in the future it can be reopened to members . We as Board members look to the future when we can visit lodges and have gatherings for our members . During these trying times let us not forget our forefathers founded Hermann Sons Life as a fraternal benefit society with a motto of Friendship, Love and Loyalty . The organization was built on helping our fellow members and helping when our community needs help . At this time in our lives, maybe an elderly neighbor needs groceries and does not do online ordering . Why not help them out by ordering for them? Maybe there is a blood drive in your community and you feel safe going and giving blood . All of these things are who we are and who we will continue to be . Lodges have been doing monetary donations and these are going to help out and it makes us proud of each and every one of you . Thanks for all you do and know that no matter how small or how large, you are giving back and doing what those who came before us had in mind when they organized Hermann Sons Life . Reflections on 2020 Vision - Focus on Growth By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Sales The title of this article is the Hermann Sons Life theme for the year. I began the January submission for Sales by talking about taking stock of where we are, and where we need to be for our organization to grow. Things were going reasonably well in the first quarter, until the middle of March, when everything came to a screeching halt! I could list the Hermann Sons Life events which were postponed or cancelled, but it is too depressing to repeat. Let’s just say we all hope that 2021 will not bring more of the same. Even though insurance sales
were down considerably, we redirected our attention and efforts towards implementing procedures and processes which will help agents succeed in this “new normal” of remote sales. The Marketing Department has launched a multi-faceted initiative to push the Hermann Sons Life brand into the public domain. We have restructured our Sales Department to provide enhanced agent recruitment, training and mentoring capabilities. New sales regions were created and regional managers are being sought. Working with Operations,
we have discontinued the use of mouth swab kits, instead employing digital medical database information in a more efficient manner to shorten underwriting time. We contracted with DocuSign to provide agents with a digital signature capability for completing insurance applications. This will allow remote sales, and cut down on mailing for signatures, as there could be as many as three different signatories per application. Coordinating mail between signers is costly, tedious and time consuming. All agents will be assigned a Hermann Sons Life encrypted email, enabling the transmis-
sion of communications on a secure platform. This will save time and mailing expense, allowing agents to better serve their clients, effectively enhancing communications between agents, clients and the Home Office. Recruitment of field agents has begun in different areas of the state. We continue to seek producers who can help Hermann Sons Life increase sales and bring in more members. Remember we offer to pay a recommender fee of $250 to the person who refers a new producing agent. If you know of someone who you feel would be an awesome agent, please let us know.
New Single Premium Product Now Available On Sept. 4, the Texas Department of Insurance approved our new single premium whole life product. We know it as SPL or Single Premium Life for adults and JSPL or Junior Single Premium Life for juniors. It is available to anyone ages 0-70. Coverage for adults begins at $10,000 and $15,000 for juniors. Maximum coverage caps at $1 million. The single premium product has traditionally been a very popular plan, and we are happy to be able to offer it again in our portfolio of protection. Paid See SINGLE, Pg. 4
Information Technology IT announces changes in Home Office staff By MATT WALKER Vice President of Information Technology Information Technology at Hermann Sons Life is growing and changing faster than ever. New strategic objectives are calling for technology improvement in many areas, most importantly in our sales infrastructure and customer service. To effectively implement these strategies, we also are making strides within the IT staff. First, we are very happy to announce Jon Thompson is transitioning from Systems/Network/Security Administrator to the newly created position of Associate Vice President of IT. Jon has been with us for more than 15 years and continues to deliver excellence in every aspect of his work. In his new position, Jon will assist in the execution of strategic initiatives. It is our good fortune to see Jon advance to Associate Vice President. Second, we are also very pleased to have hired a new Systems/Network/ Security Administrator, Tyson Wilber. Tyson has been working in the technology sector for the last 10 years, including three years as a Systems/Network Administrator. He currently holds a CompTIA Security+ Certification and

New Braunfels agents complete sales training SAN ANTONIO – The New Braunfels area has two new agents writing insurance for Hermann Sons Life. They are Celeste Salge and Krystale Timmons-Schaale. Celeste is a member of Kypfer-Salge Lodge where she is currently serving as financial secretary. She has been a member for 42 years. Her late husband, Tim Salge, was an agent for 25 years and served as lodge president. Her father-in-law, the late Raymond Salge, was an agent for more than 50 years. Son Josh also was an agent for several years. Celeste has been a dental hygienist for 42 Celeste Salge years. She has been with Toothtime Family Dentistry for the past 17 years and has been the office manager for the past five years. Celeste has three grown sons. Josh and wife Katie have a daughter named Bellamy. Chad and wife Meredith have twins named Hayden and Harper. Ross is married to Megan. Krystale is a member of New Braunfels Lodge. She holds a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice and a juris doctor degree in law. She is licensed to practice law in Michigan. She is currently an independent business owner who hires customer service agents to work from home. Krystale is married to Gavin and they have a Krystale large adoptive family with six active children at Timmons-Schaale home and just as many well-loved fur babies. Honoring 2019's top producers One of the events cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic was the annual Agents' Awards Banquet Each year the banquet is held to honor the top producing agents from the previous year. Even though this year's banquet could not be held, the Sales Department would still like to honor the top producers from 2019. The three agents pictures above earned their way into the President's Club. These agents are not new to this club - the highest club for which agents may qualify based on premium income
generated and number of applications written. This is the 18th time for Gary Falkenberg, the 13th time for Teresa Saathoff and the second time for Eulla Krueger. Teresa and Eulla have been named regional sales manager and are now sharing their knowledge of selling life insurance with other Hermann Sons Life agents. Gary serves the Houston area and is a member of Brenham Lodge. In the November issue, the agents who earned their way into the Executive Club and Million Dollar Club will be rec-

Hiring for Camp 2021 staff begins NOW! By IAN BRASSETT Executive Camp Director The 2021 summer Camp preparations have begun in earnest! I’m super excited that within three days of emailing our staff I have 25 interviews scheduled for September. WOW! This is awesome. What this tells me is that the staff cannot wait for next summer! We know the campers and staff really missed Camp this summer. No one could see 2020 turning out the way it has. We were so excited for the improvements we made and that we were planning for 2020. We are also very excited for these improvements and changes to be implemented for 2021. We all know that you cannot have a great Camp without having a great staff. At Hermann Sons Life we love the fact that a very high percentage of our staff members come from the camper ranks. These former campers have worked their way through both the Counselor-in-Training and Junior Staff Program. We are excited to announce that the CIT program for 2021 begins NOW! The first step for both the CIT-1s and CIT-2s is to complete an online application. This application can be found at hermannsonslife. org/counselor-training-application. HOW TO BECOME A CIT-1 • The FIRST STEP on the road to becoming a CIT is to complete the application. The application is for past Hermann Sons Life campers ages 15 (as of Sept. 1, 2021) who wish to be considered for the first level of the CIT Program. Please check the CIT-1 box on the application. THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS DEC. 15, 2020. • The SECOND STEP will be an interview with the Executive Camp Director. Approximately 150 candidates are expected to interview for the limited spots that are available Be sure to request an interview time slot as soon as possible since so many interviews must be coordinated to occur in a short amount of time.

Box 629, Comfort, TX 78013 The FOURTH STEP is where successful applicants will be invited to enroll in the CIT Program in late January. Spaces for successful CIT-1s will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of the CIT program is $190 for the week. The weeks allocated for the CIT1 Program in 2021 are: Week 1: June 13-June 19, 2021 Week 3: June 27-July 3, 2021 Week 5: July 18-July 24, 2021 Week 7: Aug. 1-Aug. 7, 2021 HOW TO BECOME A CIT-2 Last summer, you were of age to become a CIT-1 at Hermann Sons Life Camp. Obviously with the cancellation of Camp, you were unable to participate in the summer Camp program. The CIT1 week at Camp lays the foundation for our CIT-2s to become more involved and hands-on with our campers in the dorms and at the activities. The FIRST STEP on the road to becoming a CIT-2 is to complete the online application. The application is for past Hermann Sons Life campers aged 16 (as of Sept.1, 2021). Please complete the application and check CIT-2 if you wish to be considered for the CIT-2 program. To make up for the loss of your
CIT week this past summer, we are scheduling an ACCELERATED LEARNING WEEKEND Jan. 16-18, 2021, for eligible CIT-2s in the 2021 summer Camp season. If you cannot attend the Accelerated Learning Weekend, you must attend the Staff Development Week before Camp which is scheduled June 6-9, 2021, in order to attend the CIT-2 week. This weekend is free of charge and we’d love for you to attend. It will help you as you prepare for your role as a CIT-2! In addition to the CIT-2 week that you can attend, CIT-2s are permitted to attend an additional week at Camp. This additional week you will be scheduled to work in the kitchen or as a lifeguard (if certified) for half the day, and permitted to attend and participate in activities for the other half of the day. The additional week can be scheduled with the Executive Camp Director after the camper’s scheduled CIT-2 week. All CIT-2s are eligible to sign up for the lifeguard training classes held in the spring for the staff. The weeks in 2021 in which CIT2s can enroll are: Week 2: June 20-June 26, 2021 Week 4: July 11-July 17, 2021 Week 6: July 25-July 31, 2021 The SECOND STEP on the road to becoming a CIT-2 is to complete the enrollment form for the Accelerated Learning Weekend and email it to ianb@hermannsonslife.org. The deadline for the form is Dec. 16, 2021. The form is available at hermannsonslife.org/files/ CIT_Weekend.pdf.
The THIRD STEP will be to attend the Accelerated Learning Weekend on Jan. 16-18, 2021. Enrollment into the CIT-2 Program will begin on Jan. 19, 2021. Campers unable to attend the Accelerated Learning Weekend can sign up for Camp after March 15, 2021 – however, you must attend the Staff Development Week (June 6-9). Spaces for successful CIT-2s will be allocated on a first-come, firstserved basis. The cost of the CIT program is $190 per week. JUNIOR COUNSELORS Potential 2021 JUNIOR COUNSELORS, our 2020 CIT-2s (staff aged 17) were also affected by the cancelation of Camp. We have made the decision that the CIT-2 campers in 2020 are automatically graduated into eligibility for the Junior Counselor program. Much of our Staff Development covers many of the classes that the Junior Staff missed in their second year of the CIT program. All CIT-2s from the 2020 class, must complete and submit an application at hermannsonslife. org/returning-junior-staff-application-2020. While we have a limited number of spots for Junior Staff, they are able to attend as many weeks as their schedule permits. In order to run a successful and SAFE summer Camp program, we need to operate two full kitchens, a maintenance and housekeeping staff and two clinics with nurses and EMTs. In March we were blessed to be fully staffed. The hiring process begins now for the summer of 2021. Ful-time counselors and staff members (18 years +) do not need to have attended Hermann Sons Life Camp nor participated in our CIT Program. While returning campers and staff are always given preference over the hiring of new staff, we are always on the lookout for TOP QUALITY individuals to work with our campers. Shelby Lodge members observed Make a Difference Day by assisting with a benefit held to raise money for Lois Albright, an ALS patient. A drive-thru pork steak plate sale was held at Harmonie Hall on July 25. Approximately 1,200 plates prepared by member Gary Goebel were sold. Silent and live auctions also were held. Retirement Home Floors get facelift COMFORT – Visitors are still not allowed inside the Home. Hopefully the pandemic will end soon. Poth welcomes five new members POTH – Poth Lodge welcomed five new members at the Sept. 5 meeting. They are Kyndall Guevara, Alana Guevara, Regan Elsie Tackitt, Reagan Marie Braudaway and Layton James Braudaway. President Cutsinger reported on the work days that were conducted. The toilet in the women’s restroom was tested and proved to be working, the hot water tank was removed, the gas lines were
plugged, the ceiling was repaired, paneling was applied to the walls of the closet and it was made into a broom closet, all the chairs now have tips on their legs, the mirror was cleaned where renters had placed tape and did not remove the residue completely, the sign was hung and the ceiling tiles are 80 percent swapped out. In observance of Make a Difference Day, the lodge will supply the Poth Pantry with necessary
supplies for the next month. The monthly door prizes were won by Chris Kotara and Pamela Cutsinger. Three names were drawn for the kitty but Patricia Felkins, Claudia M. Ahrens and Bernadette M. Hadamek were not there to claim the cash so the prize amount increases by $2 for next month. Members enjoyed a meal and games after the meeting. – Reporter

Bandera met in August via Zoom BANDERA – Bandera County Lodge held its Aug. 23 meeting via Zoom. The 2020 officers are President Gary Reile, Vice President Joe Gagliardi, Recording Secretary Bev Gagliardi, Financial Secretary Pam Biering, Finance Committee members Kathleen Reile, Stephanie Brown and Sandy Trenkelbach, Communications Coordinator Susan Hillje, Community Coordinator Paul Heath, Membership Coordinator Leona Field and Youth Coordinator Stephanie Brown.
A total of 8-10 dancers are scheduled to participate in dance class at this time. The lodge made a $1,000 donation to Lake Hills Little League Baseball for uniforms for a team. It is hoped play with begin sometime next year. Due to the COVID pandemic, the lodge’s Senior Fun Day at the Retirement Home and Cedar Creek Nursing Facility visit were cancelled. Plans are being made to take ice cream for self-service at a later date. Gary and Kathleen
Reile gathered several art supply kits and took them to the Cedar Creek Nursing Facility where the activity coordinator will be able to use them with residents. The lodge mourns the passing of Virginia Brient in February. Meetings for the rest of the year are tentative due to COVID. The Nov. 8 meeting will be held at St. Victor’s Church Hall to plan for the annual Christmas Party. At this time, the Christmas party is set for Dec. 6. – Susan Hillje

DaCosta Lodge Hall reopens
Helotes Lodge will meet Dec. 8 Helotes Lodge will hold its final quarterly meeting of the year on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at Braun Hall. A hot meal will be provided. DACOSTA – Thanks to the valiant efforts of Hall Manager Andrea Stehle, DaCosta Hall has been given the green light to open back up. That means Thirsty Thursdays are back from 4-10 p.m. A meal will be available for purchase for dining in or to go. Booth spaces are available on Thursdays for anyone who has a direct sales business, for example, Mary Kay, Avon, Tupperware, Advocare, Rodan & Fields, Monat, Paparazzi and so on. If you would like a booth space you can contact Andrea at 361-578-2039. The spaces will be $25. You can invite your guests to come and hear about your products and the Hall will be available for food and drink purchases. The Hall staff will even do the clean-up. Dallas Lodge to elect officers Nov. 15 DALLAS – Dallas Lodge will meet Nov. 15 at the Hall at 1 p.m. Officers will be elected. Members are asked to wear a mask and stay six feet apart. Members are reminded that there is no meeting planned in October. Congratulations are extended to Ingrid Trevino on her 50 years of membership. She joined Sept. 21, 1970. She resides in Dallas. The Home Association Board
approved the repair of two ballroom windows and some of the wall coverings. The ballroom restrooms were painted along with the “old bowling alley” room. Since most of the Hall events were cancelled or postponed and the bar has been closed, the Board used this time for repairs, painting and cleaning. and cleaning. The Finance Committee of Terri Holmes, Amanda Hobbs and Lou Simmons approved a PPP loan. Treasurer Eva Day was successful in receiving a $15,000 loan with the help of Amber Morchower. Corpus Christi plans social CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi Lodge will hold a social meeting Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Miller’s BBQ, 10305 Leopard St., Corpus. The restaurant has a great space for social distancing. The lodge’s first meeting since March was held at Miller’s BBQ on Sept. 1. The lodge was unable to distribute the hygiene bags to the homeless for Join Hands Day in May. The lodge was pre-

Kypfer-Salge will serve sausage meal on Oct. 2 CLEAR SPRINGS – Kypfer-Salge Lodge will meet Oct. 2. The lodge will provide the sausage. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. Columbia uses Zoom meetings to stay in touch DALLAS – The year 2020 has been a challenging one for lodges and lodge members. We are a group of people who thrive on participating in community events. We delight in each other’s company, and we depend upon interaction with our lodge family for emotional support, camaraderie, hugs, mugs, chuga-lugs, advice, reflection and all of the little precious moments that human beings share from being together. This year has left many of us bereft of our customary human contact that we used to take for granted, and that we’re hardwired to depend upon for emotional stability. Some of us are more susceptible to sadness or loneliness than others. Some have a stronger network of support outside the lodge family that they can rely on. Some are left just wondering what to do. On Aug. 26 members of Columbia Lodge received the sad news that a friend had gone
on ahead of them. Will Grant was a regular participant in the Thursday night Electric Campfire Acoustic Jam circles. Will was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was a sweet person, with a gentle and caring spirit who was loved by many. Our circles will not be the same without his presence and he will be missed. Columbia Lodge is trying to stay as connected as possible while keeping the safety and health of members and the general population a high priority. Lodge meetings are being conducted on the Zoom online platform as well as in person at the Hall whenever possible. You can find the Zoom credentials for the meetings on the Sons of Hermann Hall Facebook page. Barbara McMillan is the host. Safety precautions and social distancing are required and we have tracing protocol in place for those who choose to attend in person. President Bobby Wil-
banks has been making the decision to hold the meeting in person or not, on a monthby-month basis, communicated through email just prior to each scheduled date. Home Association meetings are being done entirely through the Zoom online platform, on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Secretary Amanda Hobbs has been hosting and providing credentials prior to each meeting. On the Sons of Hermann Hall Facebook page, members David Pippin and Bob Sullivan, assisted by a capable team of tech savvy performers and enthusiasts, have been live-streaming concert performances on Saturday nights. This online concert hall situation is new to us, and may seem strange at first, but it is a resourceful way for members to feel connected and to enjoy live music without any risk. If you haven’t given it a try yet, what are you waiting for? It’s fun and it’s free.

San Marcos plans Zoom meeting for Oct. 5 SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge met via Zoom on Monday, Sept. 14. Eleven members attended and enjoyed each other’s company since the last meeting was back in March. Jesse-Davis Balboa was welcomed as a new junior member. The Cheer Committee reported sending get-well wishes to B.J. Hageman, Bob Robbins, Evelyn Moreau and Florence McQuaig. Thinking of you cards were sent to Joy Schultz and Clifford Rust. Sympathy cards were sent to Billy and Mary Lou Preuss, Esther Schmidt and Florence and Marshall McQuaig upon the death of brother Gene Preuss. Fredericksburg meets again FREDERICKSBURG – Fredericksburg Lodge met Sept. 1 after a five-month hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Members in attendance voted unanimously to meet each month for the remainder of 2020. The lodge opted for a sandwich supper instead of the annual barbecue and asked the Home Office to mail the 50year, 60-year and 70-year pins to the recipients. President Hans Enderlin honored the 13 members who passed away in 2019 by reading their names. – Donna Henke

Brenham Lodge officers have decided to suspend lodge meetings until further notice. Bingo games also are suspended until further notice. Officers will meet Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall. All elected and appointed officers are encouraged to attend. Members are reminded that they can keep up-to-date by going to hermannsonslife.org/ lodges/brenham. Gay Hill Lodge’s next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at Sealand Restaurant. Harmonia Lodge officers have decided not to schedule meetings until further notice. Many of the members who attend meetings are in the vulnerable age group for coronavirus. Hochheim-Prairie Lodge is not currently meeting because of COVID-19. Members are reminded to watch the local newspaper for information on when the next meeting will be held. Karnes City Lodge has announced that it will not meet for the remainder of the year. The next meeting will be the quarterly meeting in March 2021. Pershing Lodge has announced that no meetings will be held until the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Round Top Lodge has canceled meetings until further notice.
