Hermann Sons Life takes action to assist hurricane victims SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life and its members are doing their part to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Immediately after the storm struck the Texas Gulf Coast, the Home Office was on the scene in Rockport, one of the hardest hit towns. Using money set aside in the Disaster Relief Fund, the Home Office bought eight generators and eight chain saws and various other supplies including extension cords, gas and oil for the chain-
saws, bug spray, sunscreen, wipes and bottled water. Those were delivered to the City of Rockport where Scott Hamilton, the father of Underwriting Director Amy Heinsohn, was able to set up a borrow and return program for residents. The deadline to make a donation is Oct. 15. Vice President of Member Benefits Kim Krueger has announced that those donations will be distributed in communities along the Gulf Coast where the need is greatest. “I want to extend my personal gratitude to everyone who has made a donation,” Vice President Krueger said. “Our friends and neighbors on the coast are going to need lots of support. And I want you to know that we will make sure these donations go where they can do the most good.”

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. A traditional German dinner will be served and there will be live music from 6:30-8 p.m. by The Frohsinn Band, a 20-piece polka orchestra. Savoy Swing will also play.

SAN ANTONIO – Registration for five schools of dance has been extended because of Hurricane Harvey . Normally, registration for dance classes ends on Oct . 1 . However, due to circumstances in some areas affected by the storm, registration has been extended until Oct . 16 in Corpus, Cuero, Ganado (Jackson County), Goliad and Schulenburg . The deadline for new life insurance applications for dancers also has been extended until Oct . 5 .

Is your life insurance coverage adequate? By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Marketing Are your family’s life insurance needs being adequately met? Webster’s defines adequate as that which is “satisfactory or acceptable in quality or quantity.” I think that definition sets the tone for a discussion as to the right type and how much life insurance each person requires for adequate protection. Who decides if the protection is adequate is left to each person’s perception and knowledge of the topic. So I would ask anyone reading this article, “Do you think your life insurance protection is adequate for your needs?” I want to present a few stories for illustration. I remember calling upon a couple to write some juvenile insurance for their children. At the completion of the application process, I asked them if they would like to discuss completing a needs analysis to determine if they themselves were adequately covered. The husband replied with pride that he was working in the oil business, and had several million dollars worth of term coverage for him and his wife. He had no other life coverage other than through his employer. This was during the Eagle Ford oil run, and the future looked rosy and bright for those working in the oil patch. Alas, all booms eventually become a bust, and this gentleman was one of those more than 10,000 folks
laid off when the bottom fell out of the oil business. The life insurance coverage he had was not portable and he found himself with no coverage at all. Group term life through your employer is a perk and if provided free of charge is a great benefit. Americans usually change professions or employers three to five times in their lives. Most group term products are contingent upon employment with that company, and is either not portable when you leave, or if portable, the premiums are much higher. Always consider having a life insurance product that you own yourself that is not subject to the whims of company benefits. Many companies do not offer life insurance because of cutbacks in employee benefits. How will you provide for your family’s future if you should die prematurely and leave your loved ones in financial crisis? One of my agents wrote some juvenile insurance for a single mother who wished to put her daughter in one of our awesome dance programs. The agent discussed individual coverage for the mother during the application process, at policy delivery, and later. The mother was working several jobs and kept putting the agent off. Not long after, the mother was killed in an auto/pedestrian accident. She had no life insurance coverage. The agent attended the funeral of this mother, where she expressed her condolences to the grandmother of the child and mother
of the deceased. During the conversation the grandmother told the agent, “I wish you would have sold my daughter a life insurance policy.” This affected the agent greatly, but she had done all she could to persuade the child’s mother to consider adequate life coverage. Now the grandmother had to pay for a funeral, and the child would have to be raised by family members, with no financial support. No life insurance protection is much worse than inadequate protection, and costs less than many believe. A $100,000 term policy for a 28-year-old female costs only $11 a month, and would have gone a long way in providing financial support for this child. Hermann Sons Life, like many life insurance companies, experiences clients surrendering or allowing policies to lapse. The reasons for such are varied, but I want to highlight a few. There’s the parent who calls in to surrender their adult child’s coverage, saying that they are “grown up now and have their own coverage,” and don’t need this policy. Most have no idea what kind of coverage their children have or how much. Remember the prior discussion about group term life through work? Now that their child is indeed “grown up,” this policy with Hermann Sons Life should be, and is actually, part of their total insurance coverage portfolio. These whole life products were taken out when children were
young and healthy, with premiums locked in for a lifetime of coverage at a very low rate, which if surrendered can never be replicated again. These policies will be there all through the insured’s life into retirement to provide for final expenses. Many provide for cash growth that may increase the face value available upon death to the beneficiaries tax-free. Let me repeat that, taxfree payout to the beneficiaries of the policyholder. The last, and most baffling, excuse for surrendering that I hear is the policyholder who wants to surrender because they need the cash to pay for a parent’s funeral. The parent died with inadequate or no insurance coverage. So the current generation is giving up life insurance coverage to pay for the previous generation’s neglect to acquire adequate coverage, but is unwittingly passing on the same scenario to their children. Remember, life insurance is not for you. It’s for those you leave behind. Buy and keep life insurance coverage for those you love, based upon your needs. She was honored the morning of Aug. 29 with a reception in the Marketing Department at the Home Office. She is pictured with President and CEO Buddy Preuss, left, and Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe. Marilyn has no plans to slow down - she will continue as a field agent for Hermann Sons Life, and she and husband Harvey will continue to stay busy with their cattle. Taking her place as a Special Representative will be Becki Carley of New Braunfels. Look for a profile of Becki in the November issue.

Mary could not attend the annual Agents’ Awards Banquet held in May so Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe went to Yoakum to present Mary with her awards at a Hochheim-Prairie Lodge meeting. Mary qualified for the Executive Club and received the Last Agent Standing Award.

Bowl-a-thon raises $4,650 for scholarships The Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship Fund Bowl-A-Thon was held at Oak Hills Lanes in San Antonio on Aug. 5. A total of $4,650 was raised for the scholarship fund. Shannon’s parents, Mike and Cathy, her brothers, Martin and Michael, along with other family members, friends, Hermann Sons Life members, Home Office
staff and Camp staff took part in the event. All of the bowlers, volunteers, guests, auction items and donations made for a fun and successful event. There were 24 teams entered in the event and the entire bowling alley was full of supporters. Several awards were given out to individuals and teams. The scholarship fund was cre-
ated in memory of Shannon Leigh Gaffney who was a camper and a counselor at Hermann Sons Youth Camp. Shannon is remembered through the Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship Fund. Winners named in bowling tourney
Jack Earle of San Antonio was the big winner among the men who participated in this year’s Hermann Sons Life Statewide Bowling Tournament. Jack placed first in men’s all events, singles and doubles and was a member of the winning men’s team.
Ramona Arnold is receiving two trophies from the Hermann Sons Life Statewide Bowling Tournament. She was a member of the first place ladies team and finished in first place in the all events competition. She is from Houston.

If a friend or loved one has visible bones under the skin; loose den-
tures; loose rings on fingers; has dropped clothing sizes; or is leaving food on his or her plate, they may be suffering from malnourishment. Concerned loved ones can take several steps to determine if their friend or family member is malnourished. • Observe loved ones’ eating habits at home to see how they are eating. In a nursing home setting, check with a nursing administrator to see how mealtimes are going. • Speak with doctors to see if weight loss is a side effect of medications or another health concern.
• Provide finger food or easyto-manage foods for seniors who have lost dexterity so they’re still able to feed themselves. • Encourage foods that are fortified with nutrients. • Mild or moderate exercise can stir up one’s appetite. Walking or chair-based exercises can help make people more interested in food. • Introduce new foods that can whet the appetite. Weight loss can benefit some people. But among the elderly, weight loss may be a byproduct of malnutrition.
Dieting is a way of life for many people. The Boston Medical Center says an estimated 45 million Americans go on a diet each year, spending $33 billion annually on weight loss products. However, for one segment of the population – the elderly – weight loss can be a sign of something wrong. The Mayo Clinic says that malnutrition is a serious health concern among seniors. Inadequate nutrition can result in weight loss that has far-reaching health effects. These include a compromised immune system, which increases
the risk of infections, poor wound healing and muscle weakness that can result in falls and fractures. Malnutrition also can lead to further disinterest in eating, which only compounds a weight loss problem. Weight loss and loss of appetite are common among seniors, particularly those with dementia. Learning to recognize weight loss signs in the elderly can help others act promptly to correct the problem. According to senior care advocate and placement center A Place for Mom, the senior population is at risk of malnourishment for sev-

Wayne and Sherry Merchant, the son and daughter-in-law of Cleo and Jean Merchant, have sold their home and downsized to an RV. Sherry was kind enough
to remember the Home’s Our Scholarship Fund Store. She donated a large portion of her former jewelry-making projects for the residents to sell. Plans are to display her beautiful creations for sale before Christmas. Thanks go to Sherry and everyone else who generously provide items to raise money for the scholarship fund. Resident Vernell Homilius conducted a school supply drive for Comfort Elementary School from Aug. 2-17. Justin Tinney and his family collected the contributions on
Aug. 17. Birthday cake and ice cream were served at the noon meal on Aug. 28 to celebrate the special days for Bob Anderson, Margaret Hinton, John Pirtle, Pat Fleming, Cheryl Collier and Rosie Franklin. Spring Branch honors pioneers, welcomes juniors SPRING BRANCH – Spring Branch Lodge will meet Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the Bulverde Community Center. The lodge honored its pioneer members at the Aug. 20 meeting held at the Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch. Chair of the Board Sandra Jones and husband Sam were special guests. Sandra talked about the success of the Grief Support Camp. Members agreed to make a $100 donation to help with next year’s Grief Support Session. A total of 18 new junior members and one new adult member were welcomed. Members agreed to make a $100 donation to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund. Roy Bruemmer, Gloria Gass, Phyllis Havens, Susie Kuebel, Eddie Poindexter, Fred Coopwood, Clifton Klabunde, Helen Weidner, Carol Criswell and Mary Wunderlich won door prizes. San Marcos to celebrate German Heritage Month
SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge will celebrate German Heritage Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Members are encouraged to wear pink to the meeting that will be held at the La Vista Club House. Larry Moreau volunteered to prepare sausage for the German meal and everyone is asked to bring a German vegetable dish and German dessert. The lodge welcomed two new members at the Sept. 11 meeting. They are Owen Cooper Waechter, son of Michal E. Moore Waechter, and Sutton Harper Doane, daughter of Ashley McDonald Doane.
Celebrating birthdays at the San Marcos Lodge meeting were Leola Gourley in August and Peggy Meiners in September. Members were informed of the passing of three members, Norma B. Roberts of Austin, Bob Dobie of Blanco and Adeline Laechelin of San Marcos. The Cheer Committee re-
ported get-well cards were sent to Erin Preuss McAskill, Esther Schmidt, Benhard Faske and Connor Manning. Sympathy cards were sent to the family of Janet Boehring following the passing of her son, Robert Tunnel, and the family of Adeline Laechelin. Agent Janice Kuhen reminded members that there are only a few months left for the lodge to meet its new member goal for 2017. Insurance policies are a great gift to give family members, she said. All members are asked to help the lodge grow by referring a friend, neighbor or relative. Members voted to make a
$100 donation to the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund. Evelyn Moreau was selected to receive the Humanitarian Award for 2017. In observance of Make a Difference Day, the lodge will make a $75 donation to the Adopta-Family Program at the Hays/ Caldwell Women’s Center. After some discussion, members voted to accept a bid from Eleil’s for the Dec. 10 Christmas party meal. Reservations are now being accepted at a cost of $5 for adult members and $3 for children who are members. Non-member guests will pay $12. Serving on the 2018 Calendar
Committee will be Vice President Peggy Meiners, who will chair the committee, along with Janet Magin, Shirley Faske and Janice Kuhen. Fort Worth to elect officers on Dec. 3 FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge had a busy meeting in September. Thanks go to everyone who attended and came up with some great ideas for future projects. The next meeting will be held Dec. 3 at Sammy’s in Burleson. Officers will be elected. After the business meeting, the lodge will furnish dinner for everyone. Members donated canned food items that will be delivered to the Harvest House in Burleson. That organization has been donating to the Hurricane Harvey relief effort and is in need of food to restock the shelves. Members also voted to send a donation to the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund established by the Home Office. Welcomed as new members were Jonathan Burditt and Anna Burditt. Preston and Madison Lewallen were both at Hermann Sons Life Camp this summer. This was Preston’s fifth year to attend as a camper. He plans to apply to be a Counselor-in-Training in two years. This was the second year for Madison to work as a counselor and lifeguard. Both are members of Fort Worth Lodge.
Dalton Stanley and Preston Lewallen attended Hermann Sons Life Camp together. The two have attended Camp together for the past four years. Preston also received his five-year camper bead. Dalton is a member of Spring Branch Lodge. Preston is a member of Fort Worth Lodge.

DaCosta Lodge will elect officers at Oct. 10 meeting DACOSTA – DaCosta Lodge will meet Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at the lodge hall. The 2018 officers will be elected. The lodge held its Summer Family Social on Sunday, Aug. 13. Schwertner honors graduating high school seniors SCHWERTNER – Schwertner Lodge honored its graduating high school seniors at the August meeting. The center was decorated in the school colors of the graduating seniors who were in attendance. COMFORT – Mission-Alamo Lodge members enjoyed a picnic at Hilltop Camp in August. The 50 members and guests enjoyed a barbecue meal with all the trimmings along with snacks and desserts. Samuel Biesenbach and Jackson Wilder talked about their Hermann Sons Life Camp experiences. They talked about making
friends, swimming and the games they played. They raved about the food and said they never even considered having the second choice peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This was Samuel’s second summer. He stayed in Coyote cabin. Jackson has attended four years. He stayed in White Tail cabin. Each camper received a cash gift.
Anton Wenzel plans celebration SAN ANTONIO – Anton Wenzel Lodge will celebrate its 120th anniversary at the October meeting. A brisket dinner is planned. Vineta to elect officers, hold memorial service Oct. 5 SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will meet Oct. 5. During the meeting, Home Association representatives will be elected and the lodge will honor deceased members during a memorial service. A covered dish supper will be served so members are encouraged to share a new recipe. The lodge will furnish the meat. Members are planning to visit St. Francis Nursing Home on Oct 18 in observance of Make a Difference Day. They will meet at Luby’s on Main Avenue at 12:30 p.m. for a Dutch treat lunch. Columbia ready for fall activities
Bandera County hosts appreciation dinner Bandera County Lodge hosted a member appreciation dinner at Maggiano’s Italian Restaurant on Aug 20. The next meeting is set for Nov. 12. At that time, plans will be finalized for the Dec. 3 Christmas party to be held at the Pipe Creek Volunteer Fire Station. There are currently 45 students enrolled in the Bandera County School of Dance.
DALLAS – Fall greetings from Columbia Lodge. Summer is wrapped up, the sun is warm but not too hot and yard and outdoor activities are once again being undertaken. Something is always going on at the Dallas Hall, with new fire protection equipment being installed and a POS system finally in place. It takes a lot to keep this old building operating. Many thanks go to those who volunteer to keep the place shining and like new. Fall brings the State Fair. There is still a contingent of Hermann Sons Life people who volunteer at the Fair including Kim Blake, Melody Ostman, Cecilia Philips and a few others who walk the parade route every night, sharing Friendship, Love and Loyalty with the community. Other volunteers are always welcome. The annual Fall Festival is coming up on Oct. 7. The Double Shots and Savoy Swing are playing in the upstairs ballroom that night. Fun is guaran-
teed for all ages. Columbia Lodge will hold elections during the Sunday, Nov. 5, meeting that begins at 3 p.m. That is also the same day that Daylight Savings Time ends so mark your calendar and be there on time. Columbia Lodge wants those who are considering a run to declare their intentions before the election this year, although it is not required in the bylaws. This way folks will know who intends to run for office, and who is interested in serving the lodge, the Hall and Hermann Sons Life. Columbia Lodge will hold its next meeting on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 3 p.m. at the Hall. Word is that some fund-raisers are being planned to raise money to help the Hall through some tough times. Details will be forthcoming soon. The Home Office is accepting donations to help the hurricane victims. Members of Columbia Lodge participated at a benefit at Poor David’s Pub
that raised more than $4,000 for hurricane relief efforts. Another benefit was held at the Hall but no report yet on how much money was raised. There are always activities going on at the Hall. Swing dancing on Wednesday night is the most popular option with Kathy and Jerry showing everyone the ins and outs of the Lindy Hop, some west coast cool swing, a shuffle move and what not. On Thursdays, anybody with an instrument and a desire to carry a beat can join in the campfire jam. You may not be able to carry a tune, but you can certainly jam with the jammers. If you prefer the shuffling sound of dominos, come on down for First Friday when dominos and dancing are the order of the night. See you at the Hall. Bring your credit card. Paige Lodge plans potluck for Oct. 8 PAIGE – Paige Lodge will meet Oct. 8. A potluck lunch is planned. The lodge has donated an auction item for the Paige Volunteer Fire Department’s 22nd Annual Benefit scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14. The chicken fried steak meal is $10 per plate and available for dine in or to go. Serving begins at 4 p.m. A silent auction will be held from 3-5 p.m. and the live auction begins at 6 p.m. The Loblolly 4-H Club will sell soft drinks to raise funds for its activities. is located one block north of Highway 290 on Spur 186. The lodge will sponsor a Chili Supper on Saturday, Nov. 11, to benefit the Loblolly 4-H Club. This is the lodge’s Matching Funds event. Boerne Lodge will elect 2018 officers at Nov. 3 meeting BOERNE – Boerne Lodge will meet Friday, Nov. 3, at 12 noon at Kronkosky Place. The lodge will not meet Oct. 6 because several lodge officers cannot attend that meeting. The lodge met Sept. 1 and welcomed Vivian Chung as a guest. She discussed long-term care
by explaining that long-term care refers to a variety of services and support that help with health or personal care needs over an extended period of time. A person may need long-term care if they develop a prolonged or chronic illness or sustain a serious injury or disability. Longterm care may also be needed if someone develops a cognitive impairment that causes memory loss or disorientation, such as Alzheimer’s. Sometimes, she said,
someone just needs assistance due to the normal frailties of aging. She pointed out that there is a difference between traditional health care services and longterm care services. Health care services focus on the prevention and treatment of medical conditions. Long-term care services are designed to help someone maintain their current lifestyle as much as possible at a time when a person may not be able
to be fully independent. Wyatt Biggs was welcomed as a new junior member. Marilyn Vogt reported on the Potluck Picnic and Pool Party for new members held on Aug. 12 at Hilltop Camp in Comfort. DALLAS – Dallas Lodge’s next gathering will be Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. Dallas Lodge received a Gold Level Certificate for its Join Hands Day project. Lodge volunteers and others prepared lunches for school children at the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas. The lodge also donated $50 to the NTFB. Plans are being finalized for the Make a Difference Day project. Celebrating 60 years of membership are Ronald L. Graham of Richardson, a member since Aug. 16,1957, and Anneliese Bartling of Dallas, a member since Aug. 18,1957. At the Aug. 27 meeting, Jean Ernst invited members to the Oktoberfest to be held at the Hall on Oct. 7 beginning at 5 p.m. Columbia Lodge is hosting the event that will include a German meal and music by the Froh-
sinn German Band. Brigitte Robinson has joined the lodge. She has been a Join Hands Day volunteer and has attended other events. Eva Day, her sister, encouraged her to become a member. A second reading was conducted of the bylaws change regarding the qualifications for officer candidates. It states that a member who is a felon is not eligible to be an officer of the lodge and cannot be elected or appointed as a director to the Home Association. The exception is if the felony occurred 20 or more years ago. The third reading and vote were scheduled for the Sept. 24 gathering. Cibolo Lodge to host professor at Oct. 5 meeting CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge will welcome Hans Boas, professor for Germanic Linguistics in the Department of Germanic Studies and the Department of Linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin, as the guest speaker at the Oct. 5 meeting. Everyone is invited to come and listen and ask questions especially those who speak native German or know of anyone who still does. Hans is documenting and recording native German so the language is not lost. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, located at 1129 Pat Booker Road, Universal City, across from the Whataburger. The event has been posted on the Cibolo Lodge Facebook page. The meal will feature Costco pizza. Members will visit Autumn Winds Nursing Home on Oct. 27 in observance of Make a Difference Day. Members will meet there at 10 a.m. to pass out gift bags to the residents. Donations of personal care items are still needed including socks, scarves, chapstick, adult coloring books, word search puzzle books, etc. If you care to donate bring the items to the Oct. 5 meeting or contact an officer. The tournament is scheduled for Sept. 30 and representatives of those two organizations will attend the Nov. 9 Thanksgiving meeting to accept the donations. Members also are reminded that the lodge is partnering with the Blue Santa Program sponsored by the San Anto-
