Picnic fun for everyone! Hermann Sons Life members from all generations gathered at Hilltop Camp on Sept. 18 for the first Membership Appreciation Picnic. Bill Woody, left, and wife Mary Ann braved the zip line. The 85-year-old member of Spring Branch Lodge was all smiles as he went zipping down the line. Several people also tried their hand at archery including new Regional Sales Manager Gearard LeFore Jr. and his son, below. Other outdoor activities included swimming and GaGa. Inside the Dining Hall, there was a chance to win a prize at the Sales Department booth and play dominoes and do arts and crafts. The meal included grilled hamburgers right off the pit with smores and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. More than $1,200 was raised in a raffle benefitting the Comfort Volunteer Fire Department with more donations still coming in at presstime. More photos on Page 5.

Always working to grow membership By EUGENE ZOLLINGER President and CEO On Sept . 18 we held our Member Appreciation Picnic at Hilltop Camp in Comfort . It was a great day to showcase our Camp facilities and visit with members and prospective new members in a relaxed setting . Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly and her staff and Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett and his staff went above and beyond to make sure that our members and their guests had a great time . Ian is the perfect host . He manned the grill to make the hamburgers while John Kelly (Cecily’s husband) cooked the hot dogs . After lunch, he went in the kitchen and made s’mores and chocolate chip cookies and then delivered them in person . Everyone seemed to really enjoy the activities they had lined up including the pool, GaGa pit, archery, dominoes, arts and crafts and the zip line . Kudos to all the people who were brave enough to try out the zip line . That includes Mary Ann and Bill Woody from Spring Branch Lodge who are in their 80s . They were braver than me . Our two new Regional Sales
Managers were in attendance . This was their very first Hermann Sons Life event . I can't think of a better way to introduce them to the family . Anytime Hermann Sons Life members get together we are looking for a way to raise some money . At this event, we held a raffle to benefit the Comfort Volunteer Fire Department . This organization serves a vital role in the community and we are proud to support them just as they support us . The grand total for the donation hasn’t been calculated yet because donations are still coming in but we know that the raffle itself raised more than $1,200 . When you witness Hermann Sons Life members in this type of environment – having fun, eating good food, networking with friends and raising money for a good cause – it can be easy to forget that all of this is possible because we sell life insurance . It is those life insurance policies and annuities that bind us together as a fraternal family . That’s why we put so much emphasis on growing our membership in all that we do here at the Home Office . We spend
hours and hours of staff time and set money aside in the budget just to market our organization to non-members . The 2021 marketing campaign is well under way and we are excited to announce that it includes television commercials . The commercials can be viewed on our Facebook page and our YouTube page . I encourage you to view them and be watching for them to appear on your TV screen . The majority of the spots will air on Spectrum News Channel (Spectrum customers only) and all other spots will air on the San Antonio-wide network which includes Spectrum, AT&T U-verse, Direct TV and Grande Communication cable subscribers . Other channels will include Fox News, ESPN2, Freeform, Hallmark, FYI, HGTV, OWN, Oxygen, TBS and TV Land . The campaign also includes three interview segments during which I will be on air explaining about Hermann Sons Life and the unique business model we use that includes more than financial protection . As of today’s date, the air times for those segments are Oct . 8 on KABB, Oct . 21 on KSAT and Nov . 15 on KENS .

Schulmeier, Kelley marry in July Vice President of Operations Samantha Schulmeier and Jonathan Kelley were married in an immediatefamily only ceremony on July 22 at Chapel Dulcinea near Driftwood. Samantha has worked in the Home Office for more than 15 years. She was promoted to Vice President of Operations and COO in 2017. Samantha is a fourth-generation member of Hermann Sons Life. With Samantha’s influence, Jonathan joined more than two years ago. They belong to Kirby Lodge. Samantha is the daughter of Judith and Irvin Schulmeier Jr. Jonathan is the son of Christopher and Lauren Kelley. She holds a bachelor of science degree in mathematics with a minor in statistics from the University of Texas at San Antonio, an associate of arts degree in mathematics from San Antonio College and an associate of arts degree in business administration from San Antonio College.

Jonathan has been the Project Manager and Draftsman at Setien and Associates Structural Detailers for more than 11 years. He holds an associate of applied science degree in computer-aided drafting and design from ITT Technical Institute. Jonathan has already attended numerous Hermann Sons Life events and meetings with Samantha in the past few years and they look forward to making many more visits in the future. Samantha would like to note that she is not related to Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly. They do spell their last names differently and like to argue about who spells it correctly. Members may continue to see Samantha Schulmeier on official documents for a while as she makes the transition to using Samantha Schulmeier Kelley as her legal name.

By ROBIN CZARNEK Vice President of Sales In the September issue, I introduced you to the Estate Planning Organizer that we are developing for our members to use when putting their personal affairs in order. In the first part we dealt with documentation. Our next step is recording your assets. This can feel like a monumental task, but it’s an important one. It’s easy to overlook items present in our everyday life, but without this step, your loved ones can be left trying to sort your belongings during the grieving process. Most of us think of our assets just in terms of real estate, investments and vehicles, but jewelry, firearms, antiques, collectibles and sentimental items also need to be taken into account. For most of us, belongings with special memories attached are often the most valuable and cherished. The Estate Planning Organizer is a project I have a personal connection to. When my father passed away suddenly, it was challenging to have only a few notes to guide us in carrying out his last wishes. Throughout my insurance career, I have walked so many families through the process of losing a loved one. I have seen the difference planning can make and this organizer is designed to make the process less painful. My hope is that you’ll share the organizer with a friend and perhaps invite them to a lodge meeting. Share what the Hermann Sons Life fraternal spirit is all about. As we all continue to navigate the difficulties
posed by COVID and our ever-changing world, it’s important for us to reconnect as members and to grow our Hermann Sons Life family. Let’s keep Hermann Sons Life growing and thriving for generations to come so that we may strengthen our community and get the most out of life. Retired Fredericksburg agent passes FREDERICKSBURG – Retired agent Dennis R. Henke of Fredericksburg passed away Aug. 30, 2021, at the age of 73. He was a life-long resident of Fredericksburg and a member of Fredericksburg Lodge. He is survived by wife Dennis Henke Donna; his mother, Mildred Henke; two daughters and their husbands, Brett and Todd John of
Irving and Brooke and Scott Kasper of Fredericksburg; three brothers, two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins; and one aunt. Dennis spent two years in the Air Force including a year in Okinawa. In 2013, he retired after 40 years in the telecommunications field. A celebration of life was held Sept. 9 at the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. The family asks that memorial donations be made to the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, Junior Golf Foundation of Fredericksburg, Turner Hall Rebuild or to the charity of your choice.

Brenham welcomes new members BRENHAM –Brenham Lodge welcomed transfer member Lauran Smith at the August meeting as well as new juniors, Waylon Cass Fields, Kaci C. Kegan, Kelly G. Kegan and Katie Ann Hetzel. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Evelyn Haack. Agent Gary Falkenberg announced the lodge still needs five new members to reach its membership goal for the year. The Christmas party was discussed. Karl Goessler has replaced bulbs outside the hall with LED bulbs. It was reported game night is going well and there were 122 players on a recent night. Vice President Falkenberg thanked Kenneth and Nora Kettler for providing the spaghetti and Shirley Rowan for providing the garlic bread. Twin Sisters plans sausage meal for Oktoberfest TWIN SISTERS – Twin Sisters Lodge will observe Oktoberfest at the Oct. 3 meeting. A sausage meal is planned. The Knolls will provide the sausage; Steven Hartmann, sauerkraut; Marilyn Weidman, potato salad; Georgia Hartmann, bread; and Karen Steiger and Jan Gass will provide desserts. At the August meeting, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Meryl Ottmers, sister of Vice President Marilyn Weidman, who passed away May 28. Paul Vogt awards camperships VAN RAUB – Paul Vogt Lodge has awarded camperships to two of its junior members, brothers Regan and Ethan Munn. Regan Munn was a first-year camper. Regan said all the summer camp activities were
the best, especially swimming, games inside the cabin and cabin fun. Regan’s older brothers were campers so he had first-hand knowledge of what to expect. This was Ethan Munn’s last year as a camper. He is looking
forward to following his older brother Evan Munn as a counselor-in-training next year. Ethan’s favorite part of Camp was the choice of activities that were available throughout the day. – Pamela Poulk

BULVERDE – Prinz Solms Lodge will meet Sunday, Oct. 10, at 5 p.m. at the Bulverde Community Center. At the September meeting, members enjoyed a chicken dinner with sides and homemade cake and Boston cream pie. Jackie Oldfiled announced that S.T.A.G.E., the local dinner theater, will perform “The Miracle Worker” in October and “A Tuna Christmas” in December. Boerne to present award, pins BOERNE – Boerne lodge will not meet in October. The next lodge meeting will be held on Nov. 5. Barbara D’Spain will be presented with the lodge’s 2021 Humanitarian Award. The lodge will also present 60-year pins and Lloyd Markell will receive his 75-year pin. The 2022 lodge officers will be elected. All lodge members are encouraged to attend this important meeting. Jerry and Barbara Eddring-
ton were guests at the Sept. 3 meeting. Jerry entertained the members with his Mountain Dulcimer. A Mountain Dulcimer is a traditional folk instrument found in the southern Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States. It has a narrow fingerboard with three or four strings attached to a larger sound box. It is laid flat on the lap and the strings are plucked or strummed with the right hand while fretted with the other
hand. The Mountain Dulcimer is a member of the zither family and was probably introduced by early German immigrants. Jerry said this instrument is easy to learn to play and he sometimes gathers with friends to play in a group which he really enjoys. SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge will meet Oct. 6 in the San Antonio Home Association meeting room at 7 p.m. Members are required to RSVP for the meal by calling the office at 210-227-3085. An accurate head count is needed. New member welcomed into the lodge at the September meeting was Alexis Celeste Barillet.
Chaplain Tony Valek reported on the passing of Robert J. Fritz III and Joyce M. Royce. A memorial service was held in honor of all members who had passed from May 2019 to June 2021. Dale Wenzel was not present to win the $35 attendance prize. James Lay won the split-the-pot cash. – Dorothy Pawlik
DALLAS – Dallas Lodge will meet Sunday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Hall. Members and guests are asked to wear masks and social distance. Giddings donates to Home GIDDINGS – At the September meeting, Giddings Lodge members agreed to donate $200 to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund. The lodge mourns the loss of member and friend Johnny Herzik. He was a member for 63 years and served as an officer for many years. One of his favorite sayings was, “It’s your world, I am just passing through.” Everyone enjoyed a birthday cake for celebrant Arthur Urban.
Cards were sent to Carmen Ebner, Waldine Ebner, Debbie Beisert, Kenny Pampell and Damien DeLaRosa. There were seven $5 drawing winners, LaVerne Urban, Olivia Mize, Cecilia Martinez, Arthur Urban, Linda Mattocks, Bill Hinkston and Pat Abell. The meeting closed with a prayer and then members enjoyed an enchilada dinner prepared by Cecilia Martinez. – Reporter

Siemering Lodge resumes meetings SAN ANTONIO – After taking a month off, Siemering Lodge resumed its meetings in the Home Association Building with a small crowd. A goal was set to contact as many of Siemering’s members to update contact information to help the lodge stay in better contact and pass information more easily. All members are encouraged

The lodge looks forward to keeping its members informed of meeting dates or changes as well as any special events or gatherings. A tentative year-end gathering
was discussed and decisions will be made at the October meeting. Corpus Christi members enjoy baseball fun day CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi Lodge members met at Whataburger Field for some baseball fun in August. They enjoyed a buffet-style meal and watched the game from the comfort of the balcony of the Cotton Club. Welcomed from Rockport were Scott and Debbie Mazur. The day ended with the junior members running the bases. Thanks go to the members who attended the summer party. The September meeting was held at A-1 Steakhouse. The Christmas party was discussed. Helotes will meet Dec. 15 HELOTES – Helotes Lodge members are mourning the passing of two past presidents. They are Sherry Kiolbassa, a member since 1965, and Lawrence Schenk, a member since 1947. The lodge extends condolences to the Kiolbassa and Schenk families. The final meeting of 2021 is scheduled for Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. A meal will be provided. Bernardo will meet Oct. 20 BERNARDO – Bernardo Lodge will meet Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department meeting room. Members are asked to bring food for the pot luck meal. At the Sept. 15 meeting, President Terrel Maertz read a thankyou note from the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department for the donation the lodge made in July. Terrel announced that he and Robin would be attending the Continuing Education Workshop for agents in Comfort on the first
weekend in October. The lodge will hold its Christmas social on Dec. 8 in the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department meeting room. Turkey, dressing, refreshments and all paper goods will be provided by the lodge. Members are asked to bring two sides. The August meeting was held at Schobel’s Restaurant in Columbus.
