Hermann Sons Life raising funds for VA Fisher House SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life members and lodges are being asked to help the Home Office “make a difference” in the lives of veterans and their families by making a donation to the VA Fisher House in San Antonio..

Each year on the fourth Saturday in October, fraternal organizations such as Hermann Sons Life take part in Make a Difference Day, a national day of volunteering.

Because this year’s annual statewide event is scheduled on Make a Difference Day, the Home Office staff thought it was only appropriate to ask lodges and members to join them in a project that would benefit a worthy organization.

The VA Fisher House was chosen specifically because of a special presentation that will be made at the gathering of lodge leaders and agents in Seguin. That day, donations left over from the Hugs from Home program will be distributed to several veterans’ organizations.

“When we made the decision to stop sending care package overseas, we wanted to make sure the money donated to Hugs from Home was spent the way it was meant to be spent – helping military personnel,” Vice President of Members Benefits Cecily

Kelly said. “That is why we choose to donate the money to organizations serving veterans.”

She further explained, “And since our event falls on Make a Difference Day, we wanted a project that we could ask everyone to get behind and what better project than helping veterans and their families.”

The V.A. Fisher House is a “home away from home” for families and patients receiving medical care within the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. Veterans or active duty military personnel receiving treatment may stay at the Fisher House completely free of charge.

The South Texas VA Fisher House features a common, fully stocked kitchen, dining room, living room and laundry facilities.

Each room has a private bathroom with a shower and all rooms are equipped with a television.

Hermann Sons Life has supported the Fisher Houses in the past, specifically the Fisher House located at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (formerly Brooke Army Medical Center).

Lodges have been asked to help in one of two ways. Donations of items needed by the Fisher House can be collected and

brought to the event. Or, monetary donations can be made directly to the Fisher House. A representative of the Fisher House will be at the event to accept the donations.

Items most needed include paper towels, cups and plasticware, hygiene items, laundry detergent and Walmart or H-E-B gift cards. Other items on the wish list include kitchen staples, cleaning supplies, bathroom supplies, linens, First Aid kits, stamps, holiday decorations, greeting cards, new washable toys for children, DVDs and games. Checks should be made payable to General Post Fund 7053 (Fisher House).

Members who will not be attending the statewide event can still help. You can bring your donations to the Home Office or send a donation to Hermann Sons Life, c/o Jacqueline Klein, P.O. Box 1941, San Antonio, TX 78297.

The theme for this year’s statewide event is “Moving Forward to a Brighter Future.”

It will be held at the Seguin Coliseum and will include lunch, a program and a dance with music by the Hwy. 87 South Band. Invitations have been mailed to the top four officers in each lodge along with committee members, agents and the Home Office staff.

Funds will help flood victims in Beaumont SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life is responding to the disaster in Southeast Texas caused by Tropical Depression Imelda.

Lodges and individuals can make monetary donations that will be sent to the Southeast Texas Food Bank. This food bank is located in Beaumont and serves eight counties in the area where much of the flooding occurred. The Home Office will

also make a donation.

Tropical Depression Imelda struck Southeast Texas over several days during the week of Sept. 16 and dumped more than 43 inches of rain in some areas, leaving more 800 people in shelters throughout the region.

President's Message

Committees serve a valuable role I have had the privilege to meet with members of two of our standing committees - Member Benefits and Business Operations - over the past six weeks and I will be meeting with another of them - the Community Engagement Committee - in about two weeks .

These groups are important to Hermann Sons Life and I appreciate the feedback, ideas, questions and concerns of the committee members . I also appreciate their sacrifice of time to serve and give back to our organization; they are a valuable resource and provide great insight as a voice for members .

I am always interested in hearing from our members and hearing their ideas on how we can improve and grow!

I have also had the opportunity to attend quite a few lodge

meetings and pin presentations over the past month and there will be several more in the next few months to close out the year . My intention is to try and visit all of the lodges once before I return again so it will take quite a while to get around to all of them . So, if you haven’t seen me yet at one of your lodge meetings or events, please understand that I will get there as soon as I can .

I am excited about a couple of events coming up in October .

First up is the Continuing Education Weekend for agents that will be held Oct . 4-5 in the Hilltop Camp Dining Hall . Any time I get to spend with our agents is well spent and I really enjoy visiting with them and hearing about their success and ways we can better support them .

Continuing education is a great

benefit that we provide them on an annual basis so they can stay current and maintain their license .

Second will be the annual statewide event . The theme this year is “Moving Forward to a Brighter Future .” It is a perfect theme because we are working hard every day to move forward to a brighter future . I am excited about that and I look forward to seeing everyone on Oct . 26 in Seguin .

Finally, I have been thinking about those members and fellow Texans in the Houston and Beaumont areas affected by the recent flooding . I want to encourage the local lodges and members to help one another and their communities in the cleanup and recovery . We are a service-oriented organization and this is a fantastic opportu-

I remember a conversation with the adult child of a long-time member, who was being forced to surrender her certificate in order to qualify for Medicaid benefits. The child asked the case representative how she was going to pay for a funeral when her mother died. The answer was to go to a crowdsourcing site and ask for funds, like everyone else!

as an isolated situation. But today, a quick search of GoFundMe delivers a difficult reality check. Simply type “funerals” into the search field, and behold – 799,182 results (on this particular day). Almost 800,000 tales of the sudden loss of a loved one, compounded by an acute financial crisis.

Scrolling through the many names and faces of tragedy can be tough. And yet it allows us to see the cost of putting off buying life insurance in a whole new way.

The truth is, life can be breathtakingly uncertain, but the financial impact of a sudden, unexpected loss doesn’t have to be. With life insurance, you can know – without the shadow of a doubt – that if you or your spouse or partner died unexpectedly, your family would be financially secure. And you can know that for less than a

The Pros and Cons of Crowdsourcing GoFundMe and other crowdfunding sites are fabulous for stretch goals, for helping people get back on their feet after a setback, and for inspirational charity projects. But assuming you’ll rely on a crowdfunding site if tragedy befalls? And don’t let cost – or actually perceived cost – stop you from getting coverage. Did you know that 80 percent of people overestimate how much life insurance costs? And those under 25 think it’s four times more expensive than it actually is.

Review your life insurance beneficiaries Do you want your ex-spouse to get your life insurance proceeds if something were to happen to you because you forgot to change the beneficiary on your policy? Home Office welcomes Sanchez as new Underwriting Director SAN ANTONIO – The Home Office welcomes Tiffany Sanchez as the new Hermann Sons Life Underwriting Director. Her first day on the job was Sept. 3.

Tiffany is a licensed life and property and casualty agent with experience in sales, underwriting and training. In her 22-year career she worked for USAA, Nationwide and The Hartford. Her husband Louis is employed by The Hartford.

Born and raised in San Antonio, Tiffany said she had heard of Hermann Sons Life before and is excited to become part of the organization.

“It has been very welcoming here,” she said. “I’m excited to learn all about Hermann Sons Life. I know I have just touched on all there is to learn.”

Tiffany and Louis have been married 21 years and have four children. Their oldest, Xavier, 23, is a December 2018 graduate of Texas A&M and currently teaches eighth grade math and is a football coach for Stephen F. Austin

Southeast Texas Food Bank feeds those storm refugees Cont’d. from Pg. 1 The Southeast Texas Food Bank began its relief effort by supporting a shelter at the Beaumont Civic Center with food and water totaling more than 9,000 pounds.

Since then, the food bank has been supporting affected communities by bringing products to a centralized location and having residents drive through to receive food. To date more than 50,000 pounds of food and water have been distributed throughout Southeast Texas.

Donations are needed to replenish supplies so that the food bank and the food pantries and meal sites it works with can continue to meet everyday needs and respond to future disasters.

CITs should apply NOW for summer of 2020

By IAN BRASSETT Executive Camp Director For past Hermann Sons Life campers, the Counselor-inTraining Program is the first step on the path to becoming a counselor at Hermann Sons Life Camp. It is so important for us to “grow” our own staff and this program was developed specifically with that goal in mind.

The CIT-1 Program for 2020 is for past Hermann Sons Life campers who will be ages 15 and 16 (as of Sept.1, 2020) who wish to be considered for the first level of the CIT Program.

The application can be found at https://www.hermannsonslife. org/counselor-training-application.

Being a CIT is a combination of summer camp and work.

The CIT Program will focus on leadership training and give participants the opportunity to demonstrate those skills. We will be teaching you about camper behavior and group management skills. We will discuss the importance of being there for a homesick camper and giving you some tips and tricks to help a camper get the most out of their stay.

We will also be showing you what it means to be a staff member. Just like all staff members, as a potential staff member you will be peaking behind the scenes of what makes the Camp tick. You will be helping in the Dining Hall and you will be helping with the preparation of the evening activities.

HOW TO BECOME A CIT This year and moving forward there will be NO CITIcamp weekend. Potential CIT-1s will be interviewed by the Executive Camp Director (that’s me).

There are three steps for the potential CIT to take.

The FIRST STEP is to complete an application. Reminder: The application can be found at https://www.hermannsonslife. org/counselor-training-application The SECOND STEP will be an interview with the Executive Camp Director. Approximately 150 candidates are expected to interview for a limited number

of spots. Be sure to request an interview time slot as soon as possible since so many interviews must occur in a short amount of time. Go to https://calendly. com/ianbrassett/hermann-sonslife-interview?month=2019-08 to schedule your interview.

For your convenience, the interviews will be scheduled predominantly via Skype and FaceTime or Google Hangout.

The THIRD STEP is to get three professional (not family member) references. This can be teachers, coaches, clergy, etc.

You can simply have them go to https://www.hermannsonslife. org/camp-staff-applicant-reference. Please make sure they list you as the applicant! Letters of recommendation can also be mailed to Camp. your first “interview.” To assist you in your preparation for the interview, I have listed below some of the questions you may be asked.

• I will be asking you questions on your experiences as a Hermann Sons Life Camper.

• I will be asking you why you would like to be a CIT? • I will be asking you about your favorite counselor and why he/she was your favorite?

• I will be asking you about what skills you are bringing to the table?

• I will be asking you how you would go about helping a homesick camper?

While I will have other questions, remember the purpose of an interview is for me to get to know you… and for you to know me and what it is you will be doing at Camp next summer.

Please do not be afraid to ask questions.

While I do expect your parents to be aware of the process, I do hope the CIT applicants will be the ones who complete the application, send for the references and set up the interview.

While I fully expect the parents to help their child, I’m looking for responsible individuals for this program.

Successful applicants will be invited to enroll in the CIT Program in late December/early January. Spaces for successful CIT-1s will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis. The cost of the CIT program is $190 for the week.

CIT-2s Successful CIT-1 candidates in 2019 will be receiving an invite in late December/early January to enroll in our CIT-2 program.

We are excited about the prospect of having you continue the process of becoming a counselor. CIT-2s will be eligible to become, at no charge, certified

lifeguards. The cost of the program is $180 (same as last summer) for the first week.

CIT-2s, if they become certified lifeguards, will be eligible for an additional two weeks in Camp (paid).

CIT-2s are also eligible to work at Camp in the kitchen for an additional two weeks (paid).

JUNIOR STAFF Successful CIT-2 candidates in 2019 are invited to apply to become Junior Staff members in 2020. We have raised the salary for our Junior Staff members in 2020. It is possible for our Junior Staff to make even more money by becoming certified lifeguards (we’ll pay for the certification) or work in the kitchen. Junior Staff members were exemplary last summer and we certainly look forward to having more Hermann Sons Life campers grow into productive staff members in 2020.

BAY CITY – Margaret/Punk Otelia (Kelley) Hinton, a longtime resident at the Retirement Home, passed away Aug. 16 at the age of 98. Margaret had been living at the Matagorda House Healthcare Center in Bay City since 2018.

Margaret was born in Hochheim and graduated from Gonzales High School. In 1960 she moved to Baytown where she worked as a frameman for the General Telephone Company until retirement.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde Blair Kelley and Annie Belle Steen Kelley, step-mother Agnes Rice Kelley, husband Douglas Lee Hinton and siblings Bart Kelley, Clyde Kelley, Bonnie Etie and Sam Kelley.

She is survived by brothers Karl Kelley, Rex Kelley, Ray/Bub Kelley and sisters Kay Manning, Suzanne Benes and Priscilla Gibson. She will be forever remembered by her four children, Clyde Lee Hinton, Tommie Lou (Joe) Herzik, Connie (Bill) Conover and Tina (John)

Margaret Hinton Arlitt; grandchildren Mark (Shelly) Hinton, Tom (Dena) Hinton, Daryl (Zoe) Roper, Lori (Wayne) Doyle, Lance (Lesley) Thrower, Logan (Michelle) Thrower, Douglas (Leigh) Arlitt and Clayton (Emily) Arlitt as well as many great-grandchildren.

Margaret was best known for her love of competition and her success as a senior athlete.

She played softball throughout her adult years. She was the only woman on a co-ed all-star softball team and won several championship games in the Houston Astrodome.

She spent her golden years competing in the Senior Olympics at the state, national and world levels. She traveled to Mexico, Canada, Australia and England to compete. Along with winning more than 700 gold medals, she set senior world records in the high jump, long jump and triple jump as well as pole vault. She was inducted into the Texas Senior Games Hall of Fame and the USA Masters Track and Field Hall of Fame as well as being featured in Life Magazine and on Channel 2 NBC/KPRC. Always open to new challenges, Margaret was awarded with first place showmanship honors in a week-long Houston Rodeo Trail Ride. She was first runner-up in the Ms. Texas Senior America Pageant.

Merz/Bentley family has roots in Seguin Lodge Editor’s Note: Hermann Sons Life is celebrating “Generations of Service and Protection” in 2019 by sharing the stories of our members and their generations of family membership in our organization.

This month’s Hermann Sons Life family story was written by Cynthia Merz Bentley.

Hermann Sons. Those words have been such an integral part of my life for so many years. From lodge meetings to picnics and Christmas parties and dance recitals and Camp to tagging along with my mom as she wrote insurance policies, Hermann Sons has impacted my life in so many ways.

I was first introduced to Hermann Sons as a child. My parents were already members of Seguin Lodge and soon after I was born, I too became a member.

After many years of being active members, my mom (Laura Merz) became a Hermann Sons agent.

She absolutely loved going out and “selling” what Hermann Sons was about and letting her clients know what a great fraternal organization Hermann Sons was.

In fact, my mom made sure my husband and stepson became members shortly after we were married, as well as my daughter when she was only 1 day old.

My son has also been a member since he was 1 month old.

Both of my parents were very active in Seguin Lodge. Up until my mom’s illness, she was an active agent and lodge officer. She also served as a dance class officer for many years when I was in the Dance Program. During my mom’s illness and after her death last year, my dad (Roy Merz) still played an active role in the Seguin Lodge. He is the current past president and has served in several other offices and positions over the years.

At the age of 3, I became a Hermann Sons dancer and danced for 15 years. My years of Dance instilled in me a love of dance

Cynthia Merz Bentley is pictured with her mothe, Laura Merz. so much so that I became a Hermann Sons Dance teacher for three years with Seguin Dance from 2003-2006. Sharing my love of dance with our junior members was such a rewarding experience. I have passed that passion on to my daughter who just completed her 10th year in the Dance Program.

Attending Camp was always the highlight of my summer. I attended Camp for two years and returned as a counselor for two summers. Those summers spent at Camp are memories I will cherish forever. And driving up to Camp to drop off my daughter the past five summers has always made me smile because I know she is creating her own lifelong friendships and memories. Camp has also provided her with wonderful opportunities to grow and have fun in a safe and caring environment. I am so excited she gets to go back for her sixth summer next year! She too wants to become a counselor.

My 6-year-old son enjoys lodge meetings, Christmas parties, food truck festivals and playing games at various lodge events. He is looking forward to Camp in three years!

I am so fortunate to carry on my family’s membership in Hermann Sons. And my children are

General Bee Lodge donates to Home BEEVILLE – General Bee Lodge met Sept. 1 at the Dairy Queen in Beeville.

Members expressed concerns for several members of the community who have had ill-

ness or surgery over the last few months.

Bernardo Lodge to meet Oct. 16 BERNARDO – Bernardo Lodge will meet Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department meeting room.

A new member, Emma Louise Henneke, was welcomed at the Aug. 21 meeting. Emma Louise is the daughter of James and Vicky Henneke and the granddaughter of Ruby Belle Henneke.

Robin Maertz reported that

she and Terrel Maertz rode the Hermann Sons Life float when it appeared in the Schulenburg Festival Parade on Aug. 4.

She also reported the news that campers will be able to attend Camp for six years – until the age of 14 – in the future.

Fort Worth hosts special guests FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge hosted some special guests at the Sunday, Sept. 8, meeting, Wilfred Emshoff, a member of Brenham Lodge, and his son. Wilfred has moved to Fort Worth and wanted to meet the members.

The lodge looks forward to seeing him at future meetings.

Thank you again to all the parents who furnished pictures and Camp stories. Hope each one of the lodge’s campers returns next year and those who are eligible will consider the counselor-intraining program.

The lodge is close to its new member goal for 2019. There are still people out there who need insurance plus youth who want to go to Camp next year. Giddings will serve students at center GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge, in observance of Make a Difference Day, will serve sandwiches and snacks to students at the new home of the Lee County Youth Center on Oct. 24.

The lodge welcomed Katelyn Nunes and her mother, Vicky Nunes, at the latest meeting.

Katelyn was awarded a $4,000 scholarship, one of six the lodge awarded this year.

Students applying for scholarships are asked to make sure addresses on file at the Home Office are correct and up to date so they do not miss out on scholarship opportunities.

Birthday cards were sent to Kathleen Urban, Ginger Ebner and Ricky Ebner.

Get-well cards were sent to Mike Maass and Frances Roeber.

Vineta Lodge holds anniversary celebration SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge would like to thank everyone who attended its 118th anniversary celebration in September.

Special thanks go to President and CEO Eugene Zollinger and his wife Allison for being there.

Thanks go to President Debbie Jordan for baking two German Chocolate cakes for the celebration. Everyone enjoyed them.

What a treat!

Past presidents were recognized and presented with a gift.

A regular meeting will be held Oct 3. A covered dish meal will be served and members are encouraged to share a new recipe.

The lodge will furnish the meat.

It is time to elect Home Association representatives and to honor deceased members with a memorial service.

Members are planning to go to St. Francis Nursing Home on Oct. 16 in observance of Make a Difference Day. They will meet at Luby’s on Main Avenue at 12:30 p.m. for a Dutch treat lunch.

Dallas Lodge will elect officers Nov. 17 DALLAS – Dallas Lodge will meet Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Hall. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Officer elections will follow.

At the most recent meeting, Steve Schellenberg reported that Carolyn M. Vella has received her 70-year membership pin. She joined Sept. 8, 1949. She resides in Brandon, Penn.

Steve also reported on the

passing of Jackson L Connell of Ackerman, Miss., age 72 and a member since 1959, on April 26; and Frances E. Young of Dallas, age 100 and a member since 1959, on June 30.

The lodge will make a donation to the Retirement Home in their memory.

Members of Columbia and Dallas lodges are scheduled to participate in the opening of the Texas State Fair on Sept 27.

They will ride on the Hermann Sons Life float.

All Dallas area members are invited to Columbia Lodge’s Oktoberfest celebration at the hall on Saturday, Oct. 5. German food, drinks, music and fun will be available. This is a fundraiser for Columbia Lodge.

Prinz Solms Lodge to host local historian Oct. 13 BULVERDE – Prinz Solms Lodge will meet Sunday, Oct. 13, at 5 p.m. at the Bulverde Community Center.

Membership Coordinator Doug Klabunde has contacted Brenda Lindemann, local Bulverde historian, about giving a presentation at the meeting on the history of the area schools and notable property in Bulverde.

Eleven members are scheduled to receive their membership pins at the meeting. An officer from the Home Office will be there to make the presentations.

Pizza, watermelon, strawberries and German chocolate cake were served at the Sept. 8 meeting.

Community Coordinator Jack-

ie Oldfield updated the members on two upcoming events in the community. The next play presented by S.T.A.G.E. is “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” The production opens Oct. 3-5 and runs for three weekends. Members were asked to sign up for their preference of dates to attend a performance.

The Air Force Band of the West will be performing Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the New Braunfels Civic Center.

Jackie also asked for ideas for a Make a Difference Day project in October. Several suggestions were made for helping neighbors in need or helping at one of the local churches.

DaCosta Lodge to elect officers at Oct. 8 meeting DACOSTA – DaCosta Lodge will meet Oct. 8 at the lodge hall beginning at 6 p.m. The 2020 officers will be elected.

The lodge held its annual Summer Family Social on Aug. 18.

Kathy Leland and Pam Dornak received their 50-year pins.

They have been members since June 27, 1969.

Claudia Schoener received her 60-year pin. She joined on Sept. 1, 1959.

James Goebel and Judith Wood received their 70-year pins. James has been a member since Aug. 1, 1949. Judith joined on Jan. 5, 1949.

Cibolo will celebrate Halloween Oct. 3 CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge held a memorial service honoring Patricia Dietz and Brenda Fey on Thursday, Sept. 5. Friends of Brenda Fey paid tribute and shared memories of their time with Brenda and Judy Brashear sang “I Have Been Changed for the Better” in Brenda’s memory.

Members were reminded that the next meeting is set for Oct. 3.

Pizza will be provided and everyone is asked to bring a favorite side dish or desert. Everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite costume and bring candy for the children. Prizes will be awarded for best adult and junior costumes.

Members are also reminded that the lodge will host a rummage sale on Oct. 12 in the parking lot of Christ the King Lutheran Church. Items to sell are needed.

President Jack Manchack reported that Vernell Foyt passed away on Friday, Aug. 9, at the age of 87. She had been a member since Sept. 14, 1949.

Gary Falkenberg reported he was working on eight applications.

The meal for the Nov. 11 meeting will be catered by either Cracker Barrel or Luby’s.

James Ellison has confirmed the Christmas dinner will be held at Logan’s Roadhouse on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m.

The Jan. 13 meal will be barbecue sandwiches with all the trimmings. The meeting will be held at Sokol Hall.

Jackie Bushman and Kathy Anderson finished in third place in ladies’ doubles at the Statewide Bowling Tournament.

Columbia Lodge will elect officers at Nov. 3 meeting

DALLAS – Columbia Lodge officer elections for 2020 will be held at the regular meeting on Nov. 3, beginning at 3 p.m.

As requested previously, members seeking election must have declared their intentions at the September meeting.

Current officers President Bobby Wilbanks, Secretary/Treasurer Stanley Whitehead and Home Association trustees Amanda Hobbs, Lou Simmons and Lynn Bossange have all announced they will seek re-election. Ean Howe has declared his intention to run for vice sresident.

Seven members of Columbia Lodge participated in the DFW Kidney Walk on Sept. 7 in honor of longtime member Pat Avery.

They raised almost $1,300 (258 percent of the team’s stated goal) for the National Kidney Foundation.

President Bobby Wilbanks and wife Juliea, Ean and Anni Howe, Mary and Marcel Marvin and their big, friendly dog Romeo, and ad hoc Team Captain Sevilyn Pinson all walked the 5K course from start to finish.

Schulenburg has new member SCHULENBURG – Schulenburg Lodge meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Schulenburg Community Center beginning with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. Dinner and the meeting follow at 7 p.m.

Khloe Malayna Rangel was welcomed as a new member at the September meeting.

The lodge will make a donation to the VA Fisher House in observance of Make a Difference Day. This is the project being sponsored by the Home Office in conjunction with the statewide event being held in Seguin.

Donations to the lodge’s scholarship fund were made by Elmer and Arline Ulrich in memory for Edward Knocke, Billy Strickland and Terry Dieringer.

Agent Mark K. Seifert reported that dance classes have started.

A pork steak dinner fund-raiser is scheduled for Oct. 16. Mark K. has tickets.

Columbia Lodge hosted a Blue Christmas in July party, featuring live music, smoked meats and a Christmas potluck dinner. The hall was decked, the stockings were hung with care and bicycle helmets and locks decorated the tree in the Old Bowling Alley. The almost $900 raised will ultimately benefit children in need at Christmas time.

Sevilyn Pinson was the ad hoc captain for the Columbia Lodge team that took part in the DFW Kidney Walk in September.

Oct. 26 is Make A Difference Day. Members will have two opportunities to join together to make a difference in the community. The Human Rights Initiative will be hosting an annual clothing drive to benefit refugee families in need. Debra Hundley is setting up a donation box at the Hall for those who wish to donate gently used items. Members may volunteer to sort items

at the Doubletree Hotel at Love Field from 4-6 p.m.

Another opportunity to do a Random Act of Kindness for the community will be to show up and serve dinner at the Bridge Homeless Recovery Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m. that same day.

Paige honors pin recipients with German luncheon PAIGE – Members and guests of Paige Lodge honored pin recipients with a German-style lunch Sunday, Sept. 8.

Stan Steiger, a member of the board of directors, presented 70-year membership pins to Milton Ihlo and Otis Marburger. Milton has been a member since March 23, 1949. Otis has been a member since March 13, 1949. Pamela Ihlo Herber received her 50-year membership pin. She has been a member since Sept. 15, 1969.

Unable to be there to accept their pins were Steven Frerich, a 50-year member; Randy Kastner and Ronnie Tschatschula, 60-year members; and Mailien Neidig, a 70-year member.

Guests included Larry and Carol Steiger.

Members were disappointed that Karen Steiger was unable to attend and join the festivities. It was very special to Milton Ihlo to receive his pin from Stan as he has known the Steiger family for about 30 years, including Stan’s father Carl Steiger. Milton even wore a pair of suspenders that previously belonged to Carl Steiger to honor him.

Milton, who is widely known for his love of Hermann Sons, spoke about how his first job as a youth was to sweep the lodge hall and clean the tables for each lodge meeting. He was paid 50 cents.

He then went on to hold various offices including serving

Edelweiss-Magnolia Lodge continues to support Dan’s House of Hope Edelweiss-Magnolia Lodge in Houston is continuing its support of Dan’s House of Hope. The lodge recently made a $1,000 donation to the organization that provides free temporary housing to adolescents and young adults with cancer. The donation was commemorated with a brick in the home’s patio. Pictured are Jerry Ziemnicki, left, from the lodge along with Roger Kenneavy, co-founder and executive director. The home was created in memory of Roger’s son Dan Kenneavy who died in 2009 after battling osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer.

It was his dream to create a place where cancer patients and their families can stay while they are undergoing treatment. The large home is located next to the Texas Medical Center District. Since 2014, the home has served more than 430 youth and their families for more than 3,422 room nights and provided well over 7,000 meals.

Kirby will celebrate anniversary at Oct. 7 meeting KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will meet Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. The meal will be catered in celebration of the lodge’s anniversary.

Members are asked to bring a dessert.

Members are reminded that the lodge will be accepting donations for Boysville in observance of Make a Difference Day. Items donated should be for children and young adults ages 0 to 21.

The donations will be delivered at Christmas and can include toys, towels, small household appliances and other items needed for use in a new living space.

Members will celebrate Thanksgiving at the Nov. 4 meeting that begins at 7 p.m.

Corpus Christi Lodge plans games, dinner for Oct. 7 CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi Lodge will meet Oct. 7 at Hilltop Community Center.

Mission-Alamo to celebrate holidays on Nov. 24 SAN ANTONIO – Merry “Christmas in July” is a special treat for Mission-Alamo Lodge members each year. Members enjoyed the excitement after their regular meeting.

The August meeting was also a special one with junior members who attended Camp invited to come and share their experiences. Sam Biesenbach was delightful to talk with and had glowing things to say about his Camp experience. When asked what his favorite food was, he said, “all of it.”

Representing the lodge on the Home Association during the coming year will be Denise Wright and J.R. Kneupper.

New junior members welcomed in July were Marlo Stiles, Jove Stiles, Julian Stiles and Kapri Soto. New members welcomed in August were Jack Morrow, Lauren Brehm-Long and Jael Amelia Castillo.

The lodge’s new member goal for 2019 is 36. Currently the lodge has 33 new members.

Mission-Alamo Lodge mourns the passing of two members.

Dorothy Cowling, age 83, passed away on June 9, 2019. She had been a member for 47 years.

San Marcos to observe German Heritage Month SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge will recognize German Heritage Month and Cancer Awareness Month at the October meeting. Members are encouraged to wear pink. The Preuss family will make a presentation on its family history.

The lodge will furnish the sausage for the German meal.

Members are asked to bring

a German vegetable dish and German dessert.

The meeting will be held in the La Vista Retirement Club House.

The September meeting was held at Mamacita’s Restaurant in San Marcos.

The Cheer Committee reported get-well cards were sent to Florence and Marshall McQuaig

Mary Jane and Marshall Smith were selected as the recipients of the 2019 Humanitarian Award.

The lodge will observe Make a Difference Day with a donation to the Fisher House as part of the Home Office’s support of

the home away from home for military families. Members can make donations by bringing them to the October meeting.

Janet Magin, Teresa Velasquez, Agnes Dreibrodt and Janice Kuhen will serve on the Nominating Committee.

Members voted to make a donation to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund.

Happy anniversary wishes were extended to John and Betty Schawe who are celebrating 56 years of marriage.

Comfort Lodge will hold mini trick-or-treat Oct. 14 COMFORT – Comfort Lodge will meet Monday, Oct. 14, at the VFW Hall in Comfort. The social will begin at 4:30 p.m. and a tamale and chili meal will be provided at 6 p.m.

Siemering Lodge plans turkey dinner, election SIEMERING – Siemering Lodge held its annual memorial service during the August meeting.

Chaplin Katherine Hess lit a candle for each member who passed away during the last year.

Jayden Rehfeld helped blow out the candles. That seemed appropriate since he and several others were also celebrating their birthdays.

The San Antonio Dulcimers and Strings provided music while members enjoyed the potluck meal.

Social member JoAnn Massengale shared information about her granddaughter who is deaf and a swimmer in the Deaf Olympics. Emily Massengale, who is a member of Louise Schuetze Lodge, earned three silver and one bronze medal in Brazil. She wore her shirt with Hermann Sons on the back.

Paul and Katherine Hess will provide the sausage for the October dinner with lots of trimmings. Members will be making further plans for the upcoming months. If you have ideas, be prepared to share them at the meeting.

The San Antonio Dulcimers and Strings provided dinner music for the Siemering Lodge meeting in September.

Members of the Warrior Cry Music Project will join lodge members during the meal in November. The lodge will provide the turkey and dressing and ask that everyone bring their favorite side or dessert.

Elections will follow. Members were asked to consider running for office.

The lodge meets regularly on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. for great fellowship and the good feeling of helping with projects to benefit the community.

Twin Sisters Lodge plans Oktoberfest meal for Oct. 6 TWIN SISTERS – Twin Sisters Lodge will meet Sunday, Oct. 6, with an Oktoberfest theme. The Humanitarian of the Year will be chosen. The menu will include sausage, furnished by Alvin and Helen Knoll.

Providing sides will be Tanja Tomlinson, sauerkraut; Karen Steiger, red cabbage; Marilyn Weidmann, potato salad; Herm Weber, bread; and Georgia Hartmann, a German chocolate cake.

Kerrville to meet Oct. 2 KERRVILLE – Kerrville Lodge will meet Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the Wells Fargo Bank board room, 301 Junction Highway, Kerrville, beginning at 6:30 pm.

A potluck meal will be served. Members will be making final plans for the annual Christmas party.

Etta Blankenship, Sally McGrew and Tony Straube met at Walmart and bought school supplies that were needed by the Ingram and Center Point schools. The supplies were much appreciated by both schools.

The tentative meeting schedule for 2020 is Feb. 5, April 1, June 3, Aug. 5, Oct. 7 and Dec. 4 (Christmas party).

Poth welcomes two new members POTH – Two new members were welcomed at the September meeting of Poth Lodge.

They are Mikayla and McKenzie Martinez.

Lucille Novak was to come home from the Regency on Sunday, Sept. 1, so she was unable to attend the meeting. Everyone looks forward to seeing her next month.

Everyone was amazed at the new water heater system just installed. Albert Holder did a magnificent job.

Elizabeth Cutsinger replaced the lock on the back door and had Mel Polasek enlarge the striker plate to conform to the irregularity of the door. It now works normally so the building

is once again secure.

Discussion was held on repairing the floor in the lodge hall where it curled up when someone put a keg on the floor during a rental. Bids will be obtained on replacing the floor.

Discussion will continue next month.

Pam Cutsinger and Cloe Bostick won the door prizes.

Three names were drawn for the kitty but Robert Billimek, Joe Ibarra and Cassaundra J. Herrera were not there to claim the cash.

Deanville refinishes hall floor, celebrates birthday DEANVILLE – Deanville Lodge members gathered Aug. 25 for a short meeting. The meeting was brief because the floors were being refinished after approximately 90 years of dancing on them.

On Sept. 8, the recently refinished floors were ready for dancing as Heneritta Cunningham, an active lodge member, celebrated her 90th birthday.

A large number of friends and family attended the celebration hosted by her family.

The lodge is grateful to Henrietta for her dedication to the organization and wish her many more happy and healthy years.

Bandera County Lodge will meet Nov. 17 at Reile home BANDERA – Bandera County Lodge hosted an appreciation dinner for members at the Saltgrass Steak House in Helotes.

Round Top Lodge to work with Texas Ramp Project ROUND TOP – William Koenig from the Texas Ramp Project was the guest speaker at the Aug. 22 meeting of Round Top Lodge.

This nonprofit started in Dallas with the Methodist Church about 35 years ago and can now be found in 254 counties in Texas and has spread to New Mexico.

The team of 35 volunteers in La Grange are mostly 70 to 80 years old and have been doing this for the past nine years in Fayette and Lee counties.

This group has built more than 350 ramps at no cost to the client. They build ramps for any person in need as referred by doctors, social workers, hospitals, home health and service agencies, pastors and churches.

All donations stay at the local level.

Volunteers are welcome and you don’t need building experience. Members of the lodge plan to help on Thursday, Oct 24, in observance of Make a Difference Day. A monetary donation also was approved.

A card will be mailed to Burney Keilers following the passing of his son Daniel. Daniel is the nephew of Doris and Gary Falkenberg.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Herman Borchardt.

Special Representative Gary Falkenberg urged members to recruit new members.

Martin, age 89, who passed away July 17 and had been a member since 1993.

Pershing Lodge collecting items for VA Fisher House SAN ANTONIO - Pershing Lodge will meet Oct. 2 in the San Antonio Home Association meeting room at 7 p.m.

The lodge will furnish the sausage and members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

Members are asked to bring items for the VA Fisher House.

Items most needed are paper towels, cups, plasticware, hygiene items, laundry detergent, cleaning items and monetary donations.

These will be donated as part of the Make a Difference Day project sponsored by the Home

Members are reminded that officers will be elected at the November meeting. Positions on the ballot include president, vice president, financial secretary and a financial trustee position.

James Lay won the $35 attendance prize at the September meeting and Beth Warne won the split-the- pot drawing.

Brunhilde Lodge discusses fund-raisers Winners of door prizes at the August meeting of Brunhilde Lodge were, standing from left, Carol Krauss, Maria Pieske, Paul Gottschalk, Josh Platt and, seated, Ruth Lampman. Weesatche Paint Party set for Oct. 13 WEESATCHE – Weesatche Lodge members enjoyed a fun summer of activities with the monthly bunco games, a trip to Palace Bingo and a theater performance in Victoria. The musical, Mama Mia, was excellent, as was dinner out afterwards.

In August members went to the Goliad Nursing Home to visit with residents and participate in the afternoon church service.

This year’s Make a Difference Day project was held Sept. 14 at the Weesatche 4 Warriors Event held annually to honor veterans, active duty military and first responders. Weesatche Lodge members organized and manned a very successful bake sale that netted a substantial donation for the W4W group.

The proceeds will go to help several local organizations for veterans.

The annual lodge membership picnic was held Sept. 22 and included bunco games, fellowship and a home-cooked meal. Special guests were Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly and her family and agents Wayne and Laura Tiffin.

A Paint Party is planned for Oct. 13 and the annual Pancake Breakfast and Bake Sale will be held Nov. 9 at the lodge hall.
