Hermann Sons Life and its lodges will observe Make a Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 27. Some lodges have already conducted their projects. For example, Corpus Christi Lodge, see photo above, donated 30 backpacks full of school supplies to the children at George Evans Elementary School. Other great projects have been planned. You are encouraged to read about these projects in this issue of the newspaper. But really Hermann Sons Life lodges make a difference in their communities all year long. For example, each year Deanville Lodge hosts a Matching Funds plate sale, see photo at left, that benefits the Brazos Valley Hospice organization. This also serves as an excellent example of a project that not only benefits the community, it directly benefits a grief support organization and grief support is the focused service cause for Hermann Sons Life. Make a Difference Day was created in 1992 by USA Weekend magazine and joined by Points of Light. This is the largest single day of community service in the nation. If your lodge hasn’t already planned a Make a Difference Day project, it’s not too late. Watch for more photos in the November issue.

The Member Benefits Department handles all Member Benefits offered by Hermann Sons Life . They currently include: • Dance • Camp • Retirement Home • Lodges • Community Service Member Benefits duties include, but are not limited to the following: • Plan, assist, attend and work all Home
Office community service and fund-raising projects • Plan and assist with annual Flag Day ceremony • Work directly with the Vice President of Member Benefits on planning and executing annual statewide event and/or convention . • Collect, compile and evaluate all Lodge reporting • Collect donations for multiple projects • Prepare correspondence for Home Office and Lodge events as needed • Collect and process Camp and Dance registrations • Assist members with questions about all of the Member Benefits • Set up appointments with Retirement Home applicants, Home Office physician and Vice President of Member Benefits for interviews • Compile and monitor Dance Class financials • Prepare annual Lodge and Dance Pro-
gram binders • Visit Schools of Dance as needed • Assist with merchandise orders and inventory • Prepare purchase orders and bills for processing for all of the Member Benefits . Retirement Home Two new residents move into Retirement Home COMFORT – Recent guests at the Home were Crystal and Alan Merchant, Abilene; Ron Keyser, Fredericksburg, Columbia Lodge; and Julie Sheldon, Seguin. Two new residents – Alvin Johnson and Mark Draker – have moved in. Birthday cake and ice cream were served at the noon meal
on Aug. 27 in honor of John Pirtle, Pat Fleming, Cheryl Collier and Rosie Franklin. Anglican Priest David Guthrie conducted monthly chapel service with Holy Communion on Aug. 27. ‘Should I stay or should I go?’ - The answer is stay By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Marketing In the 1981 song by the British punk rock band, The Clash (*), the two opening lines of the lyrics are: “Darling you got to let me know, Should I stay or should I go?” When it comes to your or your child’s life insurance certificate, many of you are asking that same question. Unfortunately, some decide to go. But is that really the right decision? Let’s discuss two of the common reasons that people use to leave that simply do not make solid financial sense. I have a new job, with group term life benefits, so I do not need this policy any longer. Group term life insurance is a common benefit of working for many employers so why not take advantage of the perk. What many do not realize is that most coverages only amount to one or one-and-a-half times your annual salary. For the worker who makes $40,000 a year, that amounts to at most $60,000 in coverage. For a family with two children and both spouses working, what are the needs for future financial protection? If the spouse making $40,000 dies, the surviving spouse will lose $3,333 in monthly income and will be left to cover more than $1 million in future family financial living and educational needs for the children. Now how far has that $60,000 gone? Plus: • Group term insurance is in most cases not portable, which means it will not follow you if you should change jobs. • Given that most Americans do not realize how much life insurance they actually need, group term gives a false sense of security. • Hence, the coverage of group term is usually grossly inadequate for most family needs. • How will your spouse carry on and raise a family without the adequate income replacement provided by the appropriate life insurance coverage? Grieving is hard enough with out the bills piling up. • If you should find yourself
unable to work or become disabled, life insurance from work may be lost, and due to disease or disability, you may find yourself uninsurable. • Privately-owned life insurance allows you that control, providing the peace of mind knowing that you will always be covered. Plus, not all employers offer group term life coverage. • Parents who bought life insurance for their child should not be complacent in their welfare as an adult beginning a new stage in life. If your adult child has a new job or is starting a career, how do you know if they are adequately insured? Only a serious needs analysis inquiry can adequately determine if current coverage is adequate for their situation, which can change periodically (marriage, children, mortgage, etc.). I want to cash this policy in to pay for college expenses or a car or wedding expenses. Life insurance is designed to cover a person for a lifetime, and then provide financial assistance for their survivors for a substantial period of time. I have seen too many decide to cancel or surrender the only coverage they have, with no idea of how their family is to survive financially in their absence. Still single…. what about
the future? Cash value whole life plans are meant to carry an accumulation value to sustain certificate values and keep the cost low to the insured. This cash value savings component is required as an integral part of the certificate, and should be thought of as the silent partner in your life insurance plan. Think of it as a forced savings program that helps keep premiums level, and has opportunities for growth, which can increase the face value in time. Plus: • The cash value of a product in force for 10 to 15 years is too small to consider using for college, a car or a wedding. It will, however, grow in time to ensure the protection initially applied for. • If surrendered for cash value, the funds would possibly buy books or a meal plan for one semester. Those of you who are paying for a student in college know what I mean! • Cash value and face value are different things. The certificate face value is what the beneficiaries receive upon the death of the insured. Do not confuse the two. • Parents who surrender their now adult child’s policy need to consider the total costs of college and whether or not they cosigned for college

• Death benefits are paid tax-free to beneficiaries (Convert those bank CDs to a tax-free payout life insurance plan)
• Single premium. Pay once and you’re done. (Except for annual lodge membership dues)

College loan balances in excess of $100,000 are common. • Parents would be better served to buy additional term coverage on their adult child in college, while keeping the whole life certificate they previously bought. These rates, bought when the child was young and healthy, will never again be available to the insured. • Parents and grandparents should encourage the insured to keep this coverage. They will grow into the coverage when they marry, have children, buy a home, etc. Why pay more when you realize you need more? • Think of this existing coverage as leaving a gift for your child, a head start, given because of your forward thinking. A lega-
cy gift of love from you to your child or grandchild! They will not only need it, but will already have it, all thanks to you! Another verse of the song says: “If I go, there will be trouble, And if I stay it will be double, So come on and let me know.” Do yourself and your family a favor, buy life insurance with the intent of keeping it. It really is a means to your end… a means for those you leave behind to carry on. What an awesome gift that would be. Good scores posted during bowling tournament AUSTIN – Hermann Sons Life State Bowling Tournament No. 54 is over and plans are under way for No. 55. The tournament was held at Dart Bowl in Austin. Officers and delegates had a great meeting and new ideas were discussed. Thanks go to the Home Office
for again supporting the tournament with a donation that makes it possible to add extra money to the prize fund. Also, thanks go to Board Vice Chair Mike Beam for throwing out the first ball and to Interim President and CEO Samantha Schulmeier for her words of encouragement
to the bowlers and guests. Scores for both weekends were good. Congratulations to Patty Thielepape for her really nice 288 game and 657 series, which got her the singles title this year. The complete list of the winners can be found on Pg. 10.
There were lots of new bowlers this year as well as some bowlers who have been missing for a couple of years, but returned this year. Jean Dueitt bowled the first weekend of the tournament and now is the only member who has bowled all 54 tournaments.
Can’t wait to see her in No. 55 next year. Hats off to Hermann Sons Life Austin Lodge members for their support and hard work. Without these people the tournament could not happen. Some of

Thanks also to Robert Lawrence from Strike Force Bowling for donating one of the bags that was given away. Buster Schaeffer was inducted into the Hermann Sons Life State Bowling Hall of Fame. Buster has worked hard for this tournament and never failed to answer a cry for help when bowlers were needed or a change needed to be made. Thanks also go to Kathie Ninneman and Elaine Soto for the wonderful publicity on Facebook and for posting the scores on the website. There was also a mention in The Insider and the entry form was included in the newspaper. The bowlers deserve a pat on the back for the $460 they donated to the Grief Support Camp. This will cover the cost of one child’s attendance. The officers and delegates agreed to continue to allow non-members to bowl. The saying is a non-member bowling this year may just be a member bowling next year. The 55th tournament will be held next year in Austin at Dart Bowl. A special thank you goes to the bowlers who agreed to bowl with people they did not know. Now they are not strangers, they are friends. This year’s tournament had three more teams than last year’s. So, start working now on a team for next year and getting a second team to bowl so the tournament can grow again in 2019. Photos from this year will be included in the November issue. – Sandra Jones

La Coste Lodge members enjoy indoor summer picnic Pioneers receive membership pins LA COSTE – La Coste Lodge members and guests enjoyed a summer picnic indoors in August. Financial Secretary Ronnie Lindig welcomed Vice President of Finance Harry Werland from the Home Office along with Special Representative Eulla Krueger, Agent Glenford Boehme and Agent Richard Muennink. Guests came from Castroville, D’Hanis, Dunlay, Hondo and Macdona to attend. A barbecue chicken meal with desserts was served. – Reporter

Columbia Lodge will host Oktoberfest Oct. 6 DALLAS – Columbia Lodge will be hosting Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 6, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Hall. The Froshein band will entertain at dinner and later Monte Warden and the Wagoneers will entertain upstairs. Everyone is encouraged to come and enjoy the food and fellowship. You can even pur-
chase a Sons of Hermann beer stein. This is the lodge’s largest fundraiser of the year. The lodge’s October meeting will be held the next day – Sunday, Oct. 7 – beginning at 3 p.m. at the Hall. But before those two events in October, members are proud to announce that the Hermann
Sons Life float will appear in the State Fair of Texas Parade on Saturday, Sept. 28, at noon in downtown Dallas. Glenn Marvin is spearheading the project. The lodge hosted a guest speaker at the September meeting. Bruce Webb from the Webb Gallery in Waxahachie spoke about fraternal traditions and customs.
He presented Columbia Lodge with a book of Sons of Hermann rules that was embossed with a Columbia Lodge emblem. Members were reminded that the 2019 officers will be elected at the November meeting. Candidates should declare their intention to run at the October meeting. – Dave Moynihan

Schulenburg to donate to food pantry
D’Hanis Lodge earns certificate D’Hanis Lodge President Larry Huesser displays the Certificate of Achievement the lodge received for reaching its new member goal in 2017. Larry attended the Leading With Heart event held in Seguin to accept the award. He shared it with lodge members at the July meeting held at the Seco Secret location.
SCHULENBURG – Schulenburg Lodge meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Schulenburg Community Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and 7 p.m. for dinner and the meeting. Hamburgers, chips and cakes are on the menu for the October gathering. The lodge will make a donation to the Schulenburg Food Pantry in observance of Make a Difference Day. New members welcomed at the September meeting were Emma Louise Marie Simons and Lukas Charles Bartos.
Agent Mary K. Seifert reported 77 dancers are registered. A fund-raiser dinner is scheduled for Oct. 7. Mary K. has tickets for the event. Grace Baylor reported a sympathy card was sent to Jessica Kaase and family following the passing of Sheryl Kaase Young. Curtis Baca thanked the lodge for his get-well card. New Braunfels has fish supper NEW BRAUNFELS – Sixty new members were welcomed into New Braunfels Lodge at the Sept. 2 meeting. Another member was welcomed by way of transfer. The lodge did not meet in August because the water was shut off in the building because of a leak in the water main in the area. Youth Coordinator and Agent Shirley Huebinger reported that as of that date there were 202
students registered for dance classes. Classes began Monday, Sept. 10. An expression of condolence was read in memory of Willie Mae Schneider. A fish supper, hosted by Tommy Daum, was served after games and refreshments. Michael and Shirley Huebinger will host the October meeting. – Reporter

COMFORT – Comfort Lodge will meet Monday, Oct. 8, at the VFW Hall in Comfort. Members are asked to bring a dish to share for the potluck meal. During the meeting the tiny trick-or-treat event will be held. Members are encouraged to bring 15 pieces of individually wrapped candies or small treats for the tiny trick-or-treaters. Both children and adults are encouraged to wear a costume to the meeting. The social will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the meal being served at 6 p.m. A business meeting will follow the meal. On Sunday, Sept. 9, the lodge hosted its annual Family Picnic and BBQ at Hilltop Camp. Around 100 members were in attendance including Brad Klein, a member of the Member Benefits Committee, who presented pins to 60- and 70-year members. Fifty-year members also were recognized but they had already been mailed their pins. Vineta Lodge will visit St. Francis Nursing Home Memorial service set for Oct. 4 SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will meet Oct. 4. A covered dish supper will be served and members are encouraged to share a new recipe. The lodge will furnish the meat. Home Association representatives will be elected and deceased members will be remembered with a Memorial Service. Members are planning to go to St. Francis Nursing Home on Oct. 17 to observe Make a Difference Day. They will meet at Luby’s on Main Avenue at 12:30 p.m. for a Dutch treat lunch. Then they will go to the nursing home to play games with the residents. For more information, call Ruth Bailey at 602-5147. Members are encouraged to take part in this program and share an afternoon with the residents of St. Francis and make a difference in their lives. And it will make a difference in your life as well. Cuero Lodge hosts summer community dance
CUERO – Cuero Lodge met in August and September. At the August meeting, plans were finalized for the community dance held Aug. 11. The dance was free and open to the public with DJs Shane and Renee Wilke from Total Entertainment providing the music. The theme was patriotic with tables decorated in red, white and blue. During the evening, the lodge’s 70-year members were presented with their pins. Those present were Carroll Dean Blank and Wayne Carlton Blank, both members since March 16, 1948; Charles Wanjura, a member since March 18, 1948; and Marvin Bade, a member since May 2, 1948. This was a great family event. Children were dancing with their parents, and some parents were teaching their children how to dance. Everyone said they had a good time and is looking forward to it again next year. The dance is paid for with the lodge’s subsidy money. The money collected at the door will be donated to the DeWitt County organization that is sending packages to the military. Ruth Peters celebrated her 96th birthday in August. Condolences are extended to Ruth following the loss of her husband, Elroy. The lodge has been collecting coupons to send to

Twin Sisters to serve Oktoberfest meal on Oct. 7 TWIN SISTERS – Twin Sisters Lodge will serve an Oktoberfest meal at the Oct. 7 meeting. Phil Hartmann will provide the sausage; Tanja Tomlinson, sauerkraut and German mustard; Marilyn Weidman, potato salad; Marcus Ethridge, apple streusel; Karen Steiger, black forest cake; and Herm Weber, bread. At the Aug. 5 meeting, Travis Tomlinson was named the 2018 Humanitarian Award recipient. President Phil Hartmann appointed trustees Kent Weber, Jerry Gass and Steve Hartmann to the Nominating Committee to select a slate of officers for 2019 that will be brought before members at the October meeting. Burton Lodge to hold appreciation dinner BURTON – Burton Lodge will hold its annual member appreciation dinner on Nov. 1 at J.W.’s Restaurant in Carmine at 6:30 p.m. This is the regular meeting date for the lodge. Dallas awards three scholarships DALLAS – Dallas Lodge has announced the names of the three students who will be receiving its scholarships this year. Skylar Lindsey, Kaytlan Meusel and Sloane Stewart will each receive $500 to use as they enter college. Skylar Lindsey graduated from James Martin High School in Arlington. She received an honor award for her 3.0+ grade point average. She was a member of the school orchestra. She plans to pursue a career in nursing at the University of Texas at Arlington.
She is the daughter of Shelby Jones and Robert Lindsey. Kaytlan Meusel graduated from Rockwall High School in Rockwall. She was an athletic trainer for the football and basketball teams. She completed high school medical classes and enrolled in an emergency medical technician class for certification. She also volunteered at the local animal shelter. Kaytlan plans to pursue a career as a physical therapist/athletic trainer in the National Football League. She is attending
Texas A&M at Commerce. She is the daughter of LaDonna Meusel. Sloane Stewart graduated from Lake Norman High School in Mooresville, N.C. She was the color guard captain and a member of the Beta Club. She is attending the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She plans to major in art or computer science with a minor in Spanish. She is the daughter of Debby and Jim Stewart. – Reporter

Dunlay Lodge juniors give presentations The children of Jim and Rachel Cain presented a program at the August Dunlay Lodge meeting. James and Jessica Cain attended Hermann Sons Life Camp in July and reported on the wonderful experiences they had and all of the new friends they made. Emaleen Cain gave a very interesting and informative report on her experience attending The Ranch’s Army five-day camp held at the Warren Ranch, a working ranch where she was able to participate in many of the every day jobs necessary to run a ranch. The Cain family lives in Helotes and are all members of Dunlay Lodge.

Marion Lodge welcomes four new members
MARION – Marion Lodge welcomed four new members at the Aug. 16 meeting held at St. John Lutheran Church in Marion. They were Reid Smith, Annabelle Basha, Zachary Basha and Everly Steubing. Sharon Grimm gave a recap of the June meeting which included the annual summer picnic held at the Marion Bowling Club. Members agreed to hold next year’s summer picnic at the Marion Bowling Club again. Members agreed to help with the annual senior citizen dinner at the library by playing games. Also approved was a $150 donation for the First Responders Appreciation Luncheon to be held Nov. 14. A Hermann Sons Life brochure will be placed in the gift bags for the first responders.

Kendra Kappelmann, Brianna Randle and Kendal Zunker. Ty Crawford, son of Lance and Kim Crawford, graduated on May 12 from Texas A&M in College Station. While attending A&M, he was in the Corps of Cadets. On the same day as graduation, Ty was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer and will attend flight school after he reports to Quantico, Va., for training in October. Ty was a platoon leader in the Ross Volunteer Company. He also visited China in May of 2017 on a Corps Excursion and Kenya, South Africa, on a missionary trip in May of 2016. He was a member of the Texas A&M Maroon Coats with the Texas A&M Foundation. He was both a Fish Camp and Impact counselor and a member of the
Brotherhood of Christian Aggies. Ty was a delegate in the 2016 Abbott Family Leadership Conference and has served as an Aggie Master Host. Lauren Koepp graduated from Samuel Clemens High School on June 8. She is the daughter of Carl and Chandee Koepp. During Lauren’s school years her accomplishments were many, but one very rewarding to her was a missionary trip to Kenya, South Africa, where she served the Mattaw Children in the Mattaw Children’s Village. “It truly was a trip of a lifetime,” Lauren said. Lauren is attending Northeast Lakeview College in Universal City where she plans to earn an early childhood teaching degree. – Reporter
Seguin recognizes Humanitarian Award recipient SEGUIN – Seguin Lodge hosted its annual Summer Fest in August. During the celebration, the lodge recognized its Humanitarian Award recipient for 2018, Officer Hope Vasquez from the Seguin Police Department. Hope is in charge of coordinating many of the programs for the children of Seguin. She teaches and coordinates the D.A.R.E. programs for the fifth and sixth graders in the Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD, St. James Catholic School and Southwest Prep School. She also volunteers with the Halloween Safe House, Cinderella Ball in June, Blue Santa
and National Night Out. She is a member of the Guadalupe County United Way and has been named Texas and International D.A.R.E Officer of the Year. The event started at noon with a social hour, food preparation, some door prizes and attendance prizes. A brisket meal was served with the side dishes members provided. Giddings to serve meal at youth center GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge will sponsor a Make A Difference Day project Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Lee County Youth Center. The lodge will provide sandwiches, chips, cookies and drinks to all the children. Also, the workers will be presented awards for their daily dedication to the youth in Lee County. Anyone wanting to help is asked to meet at the Youth Center on East Industry Street at

Kirby to celebrate anniversary Oct. 1 KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will meet Monday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. to celebrate the lodge’s anniversary. A catered meal will be served. Members are asked to bring desserts. Reservations are required to attend this meeting. A memorial table will be set up to honor those members who have passed away in the last year. If you would like your loved one honored, bring a photo for the table. All Fisher House donations are due at this meeting. At the September meeting, members enjoyed hearing from campers and seeing the things they made at Camp. First-year camper Abbigal Netherton told lodge members her favorite part was ceramics and showed members the dragon she painted. Anika Tinney, also a first-year camper, said her favorite thing was playing games after dinner, the talent show and making new friends. Fourth-year camper Hestn Raborn said he liked talking to the counselors, leather craft (he won first place for his leather work), painting ceramics and
rocket building and launching. Hestn brought in his leatherwork, his rocket and the dragon he painted in ceramics. Counselor-in-Training Hayden Raborn said he liked teaching the campers things like swimming, tennis and riflery. Welcomed as new members were Juliet Wascom, Samuel Wascom, London Buckholtz and Devyn Butterworth. Members celebrating September birthdays were Samantha Schulmeier and Kenton Gleitz. Vice President Weldon Hartmann reported he had arranged to have brush at the highway entrance cleared for safety purposes. Harmonia Lodge to hold Oktoberfest on Oct. 11
SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge’s Oktoberfest meeting will be held Oct. 11. The Food Committee will be charge of the meal. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. It is hoped that the German Band will be there to perform. A fried chicken meal with side dishes and desserts was served at the August meeting. Members mourned the passing of several members. Passing away in June were Marion M. Pickett, age 93, a member since 1953; Melvin J. Baumann, age 80, a member since 1956; and John C. Hoyo, age 94, a member since 2008. Passing away in July were Henry William Finck, age 87, a member
since 1954; and Eugene F. Talbert, age 51, a member since 1978. At the Nov. 8 Thanksgiving meeting, the lodge will present the proceeds from the Tee It Up for a Cause Golf Tournament to Camp Discovery, a camp for children with cancer, and The 100 Club of San Antonio, which supports the families of law enforcement and fire department personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Myrtle Witteman, wife of member William, donated artistic paintings for the silent auction that was held at the tournament. The lodge has once again partnered with the Blue Santa
Program of the San Antonio Police Officer’s Association (SAPOA). Members are asked to bring an unwrapped gift or check to the Nov. 8 meeting or the Dec. 13 Christmas meeting. Siemering collecting items for veterans SAN ANTONIO – A surprise dinner was served at the September meeting of Siemering Lodge. Mark and Cherry Lee prepared the gourmet meal featuring German food items. They started with the soup through to the main course (multiple entrees and sides) right on through to the dessert. A few examples include homemade quark with strawberries and blueberries, Grandma Ingrid’s Cucumber Salad, homemade pickles, Lensin Soupe, jagerschniteel and schupfnudeln. The lodge’s newest service
project benefits the Christmas Bash for the American G.I. Forum Center for Homeless Veterans. The lodge is collecting packages of men’s new white socks; packages of new (mostly men’s but some women’s) underwear; gently used jackets; long sleeved shirts; sweaters/sweatshirts; shoes; ties; etc. Members continue to collect “Can Tabs for Zack” which benefits the Ronald McDonald House and the lodge will continue to share its half of the monthly split-the-pot drawing with the Hermann Sons Life Camp Grief

Cibolo will host games at TruCare Living Centers CIBOLO – Sondra Ajasin from TruLight127 Ministries was the guest speaker at the Sept. 6 meeting of Cibolo Lodge. TruLight127 gets its name from James 1:27 which reminds everyone to look after orphans and widows. Sondra said she founded TruLight three years ago when God let her know she needed to do more for foster children. She had already worked with Child Protective Services for a while and a private agency before forming TruLight127 in June of 2015. The organization initially began by offering support services to families Child Protective Services was placing children with, providing cribs, car seats, diapers, wipes, clothes, etc. since most of the time the children arrive in the homes with nothing except the clothes on their backs. In December 2015 TruLight127 received its license from the state to license foster families. In June of 2016 it received its contract to actually place children in the foster homes. The goal was to help 20 children that first year. By August, they had 11 children. Seven months later, in January 2017, they had 48 children. At the end of 2017 they had 112 children in care and had helped more than 200. Currently they have 149 chil-

They constantly get middle of the night calls, sometimes consisting of sibling groups of eight and nine members. The children have to go somewhere and so they sometimes end up going to other regions if there are no foster homes available in the area. In June the organization started looking for land to build homes so the children don’t get split up. They found 10 acres in Guadalupe County and purchased the land and have already put one home on the property. She is a licensed foster parent with St. Jude Ranch for Children, the lodge’s Matching Funds recipient this year.
On Dec. 15, TruLight127 will host a Christmas party for all of their foster families where every child, foster or biological, will get a present. Currently there are around 300 children who will receive presents this year. They serve lunch and set up arts and craft tables and different activities so the children have fun and the parents can relax. They also make sure there are extra presents so that after the Christmas party any children who come in for foster care will not be left out. And every October they have a fall festival. They also have a project called Foster of Destiny, which is a sixmonth calendar to help support some of the foster families with

It’s a gift to the fostering families to let them know the community thanks them for what they are doing and to give them a fun family night. The cost runs around $25-$50 a month. BOERNE – Boerne Lodge will meet Friday, Nov. 2, at 12 noon at Kronkosky Place. Lunch reservations must be made in advance by calling the Rainbow Senior Center at 830-249-2114 by 9 a.m. the day of the meeting. This will be a busy meeting. Guest speaker will be Andrew Campien, commander of the Boerne VFW Post 688. Judy Beauford will be presented with the lodge’s Humanitarian Award for 2018. And the lodge will present 60-year pins and elect the 2019 officers.
The lodge will not meet Oct. 5 because several lodge members cannot attend the meeting. Because of that, members brought monetary, food and personal care items to the Sept. 7 meeting that will be donated to the Angels All Around You Ministry benefitting military and first responders. This is the lodge’s Make A Difference Day project. Guests at the Sept. 7 meeting were Bobby Kunz and Chad Clark. Chad is from the Medical Air
Services Association (MASA) Medical Transport Solutions (MTS). He said MASA has been providing critical, lifesaving and costly emergency transport solutions to over 1 million members since 1974. He said because a medical emergency cannot be predicted nor can a person know when, where or the circumstances of a medical emergency, it is important to know that MASA will be there for its members when needed. MASA protects its members and their families from catastrophic fi-
nancial loss and assists with the many related and unforeseen problems that often arise in a medical emergency. Christopher Connolly and Ruby Montalbo were welcomed as new junior members. HOUSTON – Houston Lodge has announced its schedule for the remainder of 2018. On Monday, Oct. 8, the lodge will meet at Tia Maria’s Restaurant, 4618 Dacoma, between N.W. Freeway and Mangum. Social time begins at 6 p.m. with the meal following at 7 p.m. Members will order from the menu with the lodge paying for the first $15 of each member’s meal. There will be a cash bar. The menu is viewable at www. tiamarias.net. No meeting at Sokol Hall in October. On Monday, Nov. 12, the lodge will meet at Sokol Hall. The annual catered Thanksgiving meal will be served. Mission-Alamo presents monetary gifts to campers SAN ANTONIO – Campers were special guests at the August meeting of Mission-Alamo Lodge. Samuel Biesenbach and Jackson Wilder were honored along with Counselor-in-Training Seth Adams. The boys received a monetary gift for sharing their adventures. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Tom Frost Jr.
and Leonard Gohmert. Tom was 90 at the time of his passing and had been a member for 68 years. Leonard was 88 at the time of his passing and had been a member for 68 years. Celebrating birthdays were Seth and Allen Adams, Joyce and J.R. Kneupper, Diane Larned and Stephanie Schoolcraft. Plans are being made for the remaining meetings of 2018.
In October a spooky Halloween meeting will include the election of officers. The meal will include barbecue sandwiches and the potluck additions from members. The lodge’s holiday party is planned for Sunday, Nov. 18, in the Rathskeller. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be celebrated at the gathering which will be held in place of the November/ December meetings. Santa Claus
and Mrs. Claus will arrive to hear gift wishes for children from ages 0 to 13. Turkey, dressing, ham and potatoes will be provided and members are asked to provide a side dish and dessert. Each adult is also asked to provide an unwrapped toy that will donated to the children at St. Peter and Joseph’s Children’s’ Home (St. P.J.’s). Misty Ann Bridges would have won the membership at-
tendance prize of $55 if she had been present at the August meeting. The prize amount goes to $60 for October. Georgia Hall was the split-thepot winner this month. San Marcos plans trip to Buggy Barn Museum SAN MARCOS – On Wednesday, Oct. 17, San Marcos Lodge members will car pool to the Red Bud Café in Blanco where they will have lunch at 11 a.m. After lunch, they will take a tour of the Buggy Barn Museum. Bandera County hosts appreciation dinner On Aug. 18, Bandera County Lodge hosted an appreciation dinner for members who have volunteered during the year. The dinner was held at River City Seafood Grill. Fort Worth will elect officers at Dec. 2 meeting FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge held its quarterly meeting at Westcreek Lanes on Sunday, Sept. 9. The lodge has received an invitation from Dallas Lodge to ride on the Hermann Sons Life float in the State Fair Parade on Sept. 29. Members voted to make a donation to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund. Youth Coordinator Ronnie Jones announced that Isla Bohnert, Alexis Castor, Ty Gibson, Caden Jones, Maci Minter, Cutter
Stephenson, Scott Wagner and Ellie Walters will each receive a $50 check to help cover their expenses from Camp. Campers are reminded to start watching the mail in January for information on next year’s contest. The prize could be Camp shirts, or a refund of the total Camp fee or a refund of a portion of the Camp fee. Fort Worth Lodge was happy to have many of its bowlers place in the annual Hermann Sons Life Bowling Tournament.

Shining Stars
SARA ELIZABETH HARTMANN is a member of Twin Sisters Lodge. She is in second grade. Her favorite food is Ramen soup and her favorite TV shows are “Goosebumps” and “Bunk’d.” Sara has a pet dog, Jade. Her activities include dance, swim team and Brownie Girl Scouts.
