Donations presented to children’s shelter
MARION – Hermann Sons Life made a sur prise presentation on Thursday, Oct. 20, at TruLight127 Ministries. A check for $7,500 and a load of Christmas toys was presented to the founder and CEO Sondra Ajasin.
The ministry provides a foster/adopt pro gram and shelter for children and teens who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. While located in Guadalupe County, it serves the San Antonio area as well.
“Hermann Sons Life is a fraternal, not-forprofit organization,” President and CEO Robin
Czarnek said. “Proceeds go back to the com munity and what better way than giving to children. We believe in the work Trulight127 is doing and wanted to find a way to help. But it was hard to keep it a secret!”
This fall, the ministry issued a plea for help with funding and even had to reduce the number of beds available to children in crisis. Hermann Sons Life organized a toy and fund drive and together with KENS TV arranged a surprise presentation for a segment of the station’s “Good Things Happen” with Jon Cok er.
Sondra, joined with some of the ministry’s adopted children, was only aware of a TV in terview to discuss the ministry’s needs but
was surprised with the donation and Christ mas gifts.
Robin presented the check and the Member Benefits Department’s “Elf” Tammi Suther land and Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly came in with gifts for all the chil dren in attendance and plenty more for chil dren at the shelter to open at Christmas.
“Oh, that’s just amazing,” Sondra said when surprised with the check. “Thank you!”
Sondra said the funds will go toward elec tric bills that run as much as $5,000 monthly and for the tremendous food costs. She also said with cooler weather on its way, all the
children, currently a total of 28, will need sweaters, jackets and long pants.”
“This will go a long way to help us purchase all those things!” Sondra said.
Robin said she learned from a friend about TruLight127 Ministries and began following Sondra and Trulight127 on social media.
“I felt connected just seeing all the good work they’re doing to positively impact these kids’ lives,” she said. “To see these children in such a loving environment. Every child de serves to feel special and wanted.”

First, our recent segment to air on KENS-5 TV in the San Antonio area was made possible by your generosity. So many HSL staff, members, lodges, organizations that we do business with and even our Amazon delivery man contributed to the success of this outreach project.
With everyone’s support, we were able to donate $7,500 and hundreds of toys to TruLight 127. TruLight 127 is a social services or ganization that helps abused and neglected children by providing
a safe, loving environment for them until a home can be found. TruLight 127 also assists in finding foster and adoptive homes for the children residing at the village. Countless kids have been saved through the great work at TruLight 127.

I can’t thank you enough for helping us impact this organi zation and the children they serve. We have been listening to feedback from our members on how we can better serve you and Medicare was a topic that came up time and again. Medicare can be confusing and a source of frustration and we wanted to do something to help.
So, our final bit of good news this month is the announcement of our partnership with American Benefits Exchange, a division of AmeriLife Group, a leader in Medi care solutions. This partnership enables HSL to gain access to a number of great carriers – Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Humana and
As we ramp up our community outreach efforts, which thanks to COVID was scaled back for a while, it is refreshing to know that so many members are out there doing good not only for HSL but serving in their community as well.
As we continue to move for ward as an organization, our fo cus will always be on you. You are what makes Hermann Sons Life great and it is our privilege to be able to serve you. State sales areas now in two regions
By TERESA SAATHOFF Vice President of Sales
It has taken almost three months, but the Hermann Sons Life Sales Department is now in place. Both regional sales man ager positions have been filled and the state along with the agents have been divided into two regions.
Regional Sales Manager John Pacini was appointed in August and is covering Region 1. Curtis Dishman came on board in Oc tober and is covering Region 2. I think we have a great team in place and the RSMs will support all our existing agents as well as recruit new agents all over the state of Texas.
There are a lot of innovative
things going on in our Sales De partment. We have developed insurance and annuity classes and now offer refresher and new training courses for our new and existing agents online through RegEd. It is a provider of compli ance education, product train ing and annual compliance pro grams.
New agents can choose to re ceive their training in person at the Home Office in San Antonio or the training can be done by Zoom.
All agents can now complete insurance applications elec tronically and with today’s busy families, electronic applications will help us get into more homes near and far as well as speed up
the application process.
I am very excited that for the first time Hermann Sons Life is offering Medicare. Several of our agents have gone through the extensive training and testing to get Medicare certified.
Offering Medicare health care options in addition to life insur ance and annuities helps us bet ter care for our members who are 65 years and older.
We are looking to bring on more agents all over the state. If anyone has their life insurance li cense or is certified to sell Medi care, we would love you to join our team. We offer competitive commissions and quarterly bo nuses. Please call us at 210-5279113 for more details.

Curtis was born and raised in Houston but now makes San
Antonio his home with his wife Lisa and their three children.
He began working in the in surance business in 1989 and has earned the professional des ignations of CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) and FLMI (Fellow, Life Management Insti tute).

Camp busy hiring, preparing for summer
By IAN BRASSET Executive Camp Director
As we all head into the fall season and begin making plans for the holiday season while drinking way too much pump kin spice everything, I’m ex tremely busy with working on our summer plans. It’s October and I’ve already interviewed 78 returning and junior staff mem bers along with 15 CIT-1 candi dates and 10 new overseas staff members.
In between interviews, we’re bidding out a number of proj ects at the camp sites to im prove the facilities for our campers and counselors. More information will be in the De cember newspaper.
I’ve also been working on find ing new, daily activities for our campers to enjoy at both River side and Hilltop sites. Anyone interested in pickleball (fastest growing sport in the U.S.) or lacrosse? I work for you, please let me know if there’s an activity that you would like to see us in troduce. I will be speaking with both directors Ding and Nessie about ways to make Fridays more fun for everyone.
Although I’ve interviewed 15 CIT candidates already, I’d encourage all 15-year-olds to complete CIT applications. The perk of completing the applica tion and interview process early is that on Nov. 15 an early bird email will be sent to all success ful candidates enabling them to reserve their spot in the session of their choice three months prior to open enrollment.
We’re also in the market for nurses, EMTs or paramedics to staff our clinics this summer. If you know of a medical staff member with an excellent bed side manner, please contact me at ianb@hermannsonslife.org
CIT PROGRAM
At Hermann Sons Life Camp, we really do believe it is very important for us to grow our own staff. There is nothing bet ter than to have a camper move up through the ranks to be come a counselor or even a fu ture camp director! This process begins with the CIT program. CITs are 15 years old.
This program will emphasize leadership and give Hermann Sons Life junior members the opportunity to demonstrate those skills. We will be teaching you about camper behaviors and group management skills. We will discuss the importance of “being there” for a homesick camper and giving you some tips and tricks to help a camper get the most out of their stay.
We will also be showing you what it means to be a staff member. As a CIT camper, and as a potential staff member, you will be peeking behind the scenes of what makes our Camp tick. You will be helping in the dining hall, you will help set up, break down and run evening activities, you will be observing and participating in daily activi ties and you may be helping in the kitchen as well.
If you are interested in joining the team at Hermann Sons Life Camp, the directions are listed below.
HOW TO BECOME A CIT-1
The FIRST STEP on the road to becoming a CIT-1 is to com plete the application. The ap
plication is for past Hermann Sons Life campers ages 15 (as of Sept. 1, 2023) who wish to be considered for the first level of the CIT Program. Check the CIT1 box.
Online application link: https://www.hermannsonslife. org/counselor-training-applica tion
The SECOND STEP will be an interview with the Executive Camp Director. Approximately 150 candidates are expected to interview for the limited avail ability. Once we have received your application, the Executive Camp Director will email you to schedule an online interview.
Be sure to request an inter view time slot as soon as pos sible since so many interviews must be coordinated to occur in a short amount of time. For your convenience, the inter views will be scheduled pre dominantly via Skype, FaceTime or Google Meet/Chat.
Schedule link: https://calen dly.com/ianbrassett/hermannsons-life-interview
Interviews WILL NOT be con ducted after Feb. 1, 2023.
The THIRD STEP is to get three (not family members) ref erences. This can be teachers, coaches, clergy, etc. You can simply have them go to the fol lowing link: https://www.her mannsonslife.org/camp-staffapplicant-reference
The deadline for references is March 1, 2023. Please make sure they list you as the applicant! Letters of recommendation can also be mailed to Camp. Please do not send the same reference in multiple ways. If mailed to Camp, please send to: Hermann Sons Life Camp - CIT Program Admissions, P.O. Box 629, Com fort, TX 78013
In the FOURTH STEP success ful applicants will be invited
to enroll in the CIT Program in early February.
Spaces for successful CIT-1s will be allocated on a firstcome, first-served basis.
PLEASE NOTE: On Dec. 15, 2022, all successful candidates that have completed their ap plication and interview will be able to reserve their spot in the session of their choice two months prior to open enroll ment.
Note: applicants completing this process before Nov. 15 will have an earlier opportunity to reserve spots.
The cost of the CIT program is $200/week.

CIT-2s
The CIT-2 Program is available for invited junior members that completed their CIT-1 program in 2022 and received positive evalu ations at the end of the week. Last summer we implemented a more structured version of our Ju nior Junior Staff Program. This is where CIT-2s can join us at Camp for additional PAID weeks.

“I entered a depression and re ally had a rough time,” she said. “I felt like I didn’t have anyone.”
Once in college, Sondra said it became her goal in life to help children not enter the “dark sea son that I entered.”
She began working in child welfare in 2006 and founded Tru Light127 Ministries in 2015.
“It’s what God called me to do –to be a support to these kids and families.”

One of those guardrails is to en sure that our CIT-2s complete the CIT-2 program before becoming a JJC. Therefore in 2023 we have tentatively allocated for CIT-2s in 2023 to take up the first three weeks of the summer.
• Week 1: June 11 – June 17

“I wish everyone could have been there at the presentation to see these children playing in such a loving environment,” Rob in said. “We were moved to tears.”
In addition to the monetary donation, Hermann Sons Life brought toys for all the children in attendance at the ministry. These children were once residents at TruLight127 Ministries and were adopted. Plenty more toys were provided for children at the shelter to open at Christmas. Below, a happy boy plays with his new toy and Jon Coker of KENS TV takes time to play with one of the children.
