Lodges ‘make a difference’ in their communities SAN ANTONIO – As the holiday season approaches, Hermann Sons Life lodges are working hard to strengthen their communities with donations to various worthy causes.

Some lodges made those donations in observance of Make a Difference Day which is observed in October each year.

Here is a recap of the projects that have been reported to the Home Office in recent weeks.

COMFORT Comfort is donating a total of $3,500 to the Comfort community.

The lodge is donating $1,500 to the Golden

Age Home and another $1,500 to the Comfort Table/Food Pantry. A $500 donation will be made to the Comfort School of Dance to help offset the cost of costumes.

DALLAS Dallas Lodge made a monetary donation to the CitySquare food pantry in observance of Make a Difference Day. GAY HILL Gay Hill donated $500 to Stars of Joy, a program that buys Christmas presents for children in foster or state care.

GIDDINGS Giddings will make a $300 donation to the

Blue Santa Project sponsored by Lee County law enforcement officers. The annual program provides Christmas presents to children in the county.

In observance of Make a Difference Day, the lodge is donating $500 to the Faith Lutheran School in Warda. The money will help with tuition costs.

The school opened in August 2017 with four students. Now there are 14 and nine of those students are from Lee County. Four will be graduating.

President's Message 2021 Convention postponed until 2022

I want to use this space to share some important news about the next Grand Lodge Convention that was scheduled for May of 2021 .

Before I do that though I want to take a minute to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving . Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the other tough situations we have faced this year, we still have much for which we are grateful . I hope you are able to share the holiday gathered around the table with family .

Now to the important news . Vice President of Operations Samantha Schulmeier and Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly are the co-chairmen of the Grand Lodge Convention .

The letter that follows was mailed to lodge presidents and financial secretaries a couple of weeks ago .

"Dear Lodges, Employees, Agents and Standing Committee Members: "As most of you know, the 48th Grand

Lodge Convention of Hermann Sons Life is due to be held in 2021 . We have received many calls from concerned members asking how their lodge can vote on delegates to the convention when they do not feel comfortable meeting given the COVID-19 situation affecting the world . Many have also voiced uncertainty about the safety and logistics of even having such a large, three-day event within the next few months .

"We have been diligent in researching various options regarding ways to conduct our event with the health and best interest of our members in mind . Mail-in and virtual options have been explored and we have found many setbacks, including the lack of adequate Internet or computer accessibility of many of our active members .

"Our Board of Directors has discussed at length the unprecedented COVID-19 environment we are in, the uncertainty of its impacts and restrictions over the next several months and the issues that hinder us from

fairly holding a virtual or mail-in Convention option .

"They have decided that, for the health, safety and best interest of the members involved, we postpone the regularly scheduled convention from May of 2021 to May of 2022, thereby shifting all corresponding dates and deadlines by one year .

"Although this decision has been difficult to make, and comes with a heavy heart, we know it is the right decision for our members .

Former Grand Lodge Trustee passes at age of 89

Herby Schramm

Herbert "Herby" Schramm, a former Grand Lodge Trustee, has passed away at the age of 89 . Herby had been a member for 68 years and belonged to Pershing Lodge at the time of his death .

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Schramm; his children, Brian Fisher

and wife Maria, Milton Brown and wife Shirley and Linda Brown; grandchildren and great-children; and a brother, Otto "Sonny" Schramm .

Herby devoted his life to family and friends and found joy in bringing a smile to all he met .

He loved music and played the

Term life features now offer better value

By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Sales As I write this, we are approaching Halloween, with a national election and Thanksgiving not far behind. Please go out and vote this year, because every vote does count. This seemingly long year will soon be over, and for many not soon enough.

At the beginning of this year, all insurers had a mandate to apply new mortality tables to all products. While we prepared for this, we made some adjustments to some products. One of those products is the 10-year renewable term life plan.

The primary purpose of term life is to cover a need for a specific period of time.

Some features of term life are: A lower initial premium (than whole life) for the coverage selected. Term life is

considered to be pure insurance, as there is no cash value. This leaves more funds for other needs.

Because of a lower premium outlay, a person can purchase a large amount of coverage. This is especially significant for young families who require protection for spouse, children, mortgage, education, a business, etc.

Although premiums increase with age, term life is a viable option with a special provision called convertibility. Convertibility allows the insured to “convert” their coverage to a permanent whole life product, without evidence of insurability.

A term life product through Hermann Sons Life incurs membership for the insured, with the associated member benefits which we are nationally known for.

In addition to the features above, we

worked with our actuaries to increase the features of the Hermann Sons Life 10year term product.

First, we instituted premium banding.

Banding is a way to discount the cost of coverage in higher amounts. Depending on the coverage selected, the buyer can receive a discount per unit of insurance purchased. Our goal is to be competitive in the term market, by offering better pricing value for the higher amounts needed by today’s families and individuals.

Second, we instituted a renewal discount for those members who maintain good health. This is achieved on renewal every 10 years. The member has the option of accepting the set renewal premium, or requalifying for a discounted entry rate. It does require medical underwrit-

ing, but the savings can be significant. We continue to adapt and streamline our underwriting practices to provide quicker and less intrusive methods of ascertaining health status.

In essence, we are providing a better pricing value for higher amounts of coverage, and rewarding good health with lower premium opportunity! We recognize that our younger members will grow up and eventually raise families, and wish to offer products which provide future financial protection.

Help Wanted RETIREMENT HOME

Hermann Sons Life operates a Retirement Home in Comfort. This is an independent living facility. Nursing and medical care are not provided.

There are currently three positions open: Night Shift, Dining Room/Cook’s Helper and Housekeeper.

Qualifications (for all three positions): • Must be at least 18 years old • High school diploma or equivalent • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds • Must be able to pass a background check Employment benefits include (for all three positions): • Paid vacation, sick leave and funeral leave • Family and medical leave • A 401(k) retirement plan • Group medical insurance • Life insurance

Night Shift

Night Shift employees are to observe and monitor the Home overnight. Night Shift employees report directly to the Retirement Home Manager or Assistant Manager if the Manager is unavailable.

Essential job functions include but are not limited to: • Walk around building every 1½ to 2 hours • Check car port and front yard hourly • Close gate at night, open in the

morning. Open gate when called for residents returning late.

• Call 911 if a resident should need assistance and open both gates for EMS to access.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager or Assistant Manager.

Dining Room/Cook’s Helper

The Dining Room/Cook’s Helper’s responsibility is to keep the dining room clean and assist the cooks as needed. This includes but is not limited to keeping the dining room stocked, preparing drinks to be served at meals, cleaning toasters, microwaes and areas they occupy and washing all containers, dishes and cabinets as needed. The Dining Room/ Cook’s Helper reports directly to the Retirement Home Manager or Assistant Manager if the Manager is unavailable.

Housekeeper

Housekeeping is responsible for cleaning all common areas of the Retirement Home.

This includes but is not limited to mopping and sanitizing all floors, sanitizing public restrooms, cleaning guest rooms, washing linens and dust mops and washing windows. Housekeeping employees report directly to the Retirement Home Manager or Assistant Manager if the Manager is unavailable.

REGIONAL SALES MANAGER Hermann Sons Life is accepting applications for the job title of Regional Sales Manager in the North Texas (DFW) and the East Texas (Houston) regions.

This is a full-time, salaried position, with benefits such as health insurance, retirement plan, sick leave and vacation.

Applicants should possess knowledge and/or management experience in life insurance and annuity sales.

The primary job assignment is to recruit, train and mentor new and existing field agents for Hermann Sons Life. The position requires travel within the region.

Fraternal organization experience is preferred, but not required.

Honoring our top producers from 2019 One of the events cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic was the annual Agents' Awards Banquet Each year the banquet is held to honor the top producing agents from the previous year.

Even though this year's banquet could not be held, the Sales Department would still like to honor the top producers from 2019.

The agents shown above qualified for either the Executive Club or the Million Dollar Club.

We Strengthen Community In observance of Make a Difference Day, Poth Lodge members brought donations for the Poth Food Pantry to the October meeting.

Prinz Solms made a $1,000 donation to the Provisions Food Pantry in Bulverde. President Cliff Klabunde presented the donation to Weslea Miller.

Paul Vogt Lodge officers planned a breakfast in October for Van Raub Elementary school teachers and staff as their way of Making a Difference.

The lodge is also making donations to a veterans’ group, the Retirement Home Christmas Fund and the Grief Support Camp.

Jourdanton Lodge held a drawing for the quilt pictured here. Sheila Merrill was the lucky winner of the quilt. The proceeds benefitted the St. Matthew Soup Kitchen. The lodge raised $160 and the Home Office matched it for a total donation of $320.

Lockhart Lodge members Ray Pfefferkorn, left, and Darrell Hess built a shield for the Lockhart Golden Age Home. The shield makes it possible for family and friends to visit with residents in a COVIDfriendly way. This was the lodge’s Make a Difference Day project.

The lodge will be donating $400 in gift cards. Members can assist by donating either gift cards in $10 increments or money so the lodge can buy additional gift cards. Harmonia officers are making

plans for two fund raising events in 2021. The first will be a Skeet or Trap Shoot in March. The second will be the traditional Tee It Up for A Cause Golf Tournament in September. KIRBY Kirby donated $500 to St. Jude’s Children’s Ranch in observance of Join Hands Day and $250 to Boysville in observance of Make a Difference Day. host a games party at the Westview Manor Nursing Home in October like it usually does so the lodge made a monetary donation to the home instead.

SCHULENBURG Schulenburg made a donation to the Schulenburg Food Pantry in observance of Make a Difference Day SPRING BRANCH Members of Spring Branch are asked to donate personal hygiene products during the November and December meetings.

VINETA Vineta made a donation of $350 to the Children’s Shelter for school supplies. The donation came from members, splitthe-pot money collected by the lodge and a donation from the lodge itself.

The lodge also made a donation to St. Francis Nursing Home since it could not visit the home in October to hold the annual games party it usually hosts in observance of Make a Difference Day.

Kirby will meet Nov. 7, Christmas party cancelled KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will meet Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. No meal will be served and masks will be required along with social distancing.

Officer elections will be held and nominations are open if someone would like to run for an office. Contact one of the current officers and be present at the meeting.

The Christmas party has been cancelled but a regular meeting will be held Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.

There will be no meal and at this time masks will be required along with social distancing.

Some kind of celebration may be planned for later in the spring.

The lodge is collecting donations for Boysville for Christmas.

They can be brought to the lodge meetings in November or December or can be left at the lodge hall on dance nights. Tell the adult present during dance class to place the items under the bar area.

At the October meeting, Agent Angela Netherton reported on the Kirby School of Dance. The classes are being held in person.

Masks are being worn and social distancing is practiced.

She also noted that Hermann Sons Life Camp is accepting applications for next summer.

Comfort will donate to two community organizations COMFORT – More than 30 members of Comfort Lodge gathered in Comfort Park on Oct. 12 for their first meeting since February.

Members enjoyed individually pre-packaged meals from Chick-Fil-A. With the large gap in meeting dates due to the pandemic, there were several important discussions and decisions that were made.

Information was shared with those in attendance regarding the Local Lodge Bylaw changes

as well as the postponement of the 2021 Convention.

The decision was made to cancel the annual Christmas party that is traditionally held at Hermann Sons Life Hilltop Camp in December. In lieu of the party, members made the decision to make a donation to two community organizations that was equal to the total typically spent on the Christmas party and the annual member barbecue. A $1,500 donation will be made to both the Golden Age Center and Com-

fort Table/Food Pantry to help support the great work they are doing in the Comfort community.

Other donations will include a $500 donation to the Hermann Sons Life Comfort School of Dance to help offset the cost of costumes for the year. In the past the lodge has offered dancerships to offset the registration cost, but members wanted to do something that would assist all of the dancers for the 2020-2021 dance season.

A donation will also be made to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund in the amount of $100.

All elected and appointed officers will remain the same for 2021.

Those officers are as follows: president, Jennifer Cernosek; vice president, Hunter Miller; financial secretary and communications coordinator, Katie Miller; secretary, Kristen Vineyard; financial trustees, C.B. Chenault, David Spenrath and Brandon Cernosek; member-

The next lodge gathering is tentatively scheduled for Monday, Feb. 8. Postcards will be mailed to members in the coming months with the 2021 meeting dates.

Schulenburg Lodge plans Christmas party for Dec. 9 SCHULENBURG – Schulenburg Lodge will hold its annual Christmas party at Oakridge Restaurant on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 6 p.m. with a buffet dinner and drink.

There will not be a prize drawing or gifts of any kind but there will be a short meeting. Reservations are required.

The Humanitarian of the Year Award will be presented.

The lodge will not meet in November.

The 2021 officers were elected at the October meeting.

Rutersville will serve pizza Nov. 4 RUTERSVILLE – Rutersville Lodge will meet Nov. 4. Pizza is on the menu. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

The Home Office acknowledged the donation the lodge had made in memory of Glen Roy Hartmann. President Sherry Noak announced that the lodge had received a donation from Laura and Chris Brugger in memory of Glen Roy Hartmann.

lodge of changes to the Local Lodge Bylaws regarding how meetings can be conducted during unusual times like the pandemic.

Columbus Lodge plans social for Dec. 14 COLUMBUS – Columbus Lodge will hold its Christmas social at Schobel’s on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m.

The lodge met Oct. 12. Secretary/Treasurer Elena Holub read a letter from the Home Office announcing that the Grand Lodge Convention has been moved from May 2021 to May 2022 because of the pandemic.

Award recipient for the year, Leo Schneider, has passed away.

Members agreed to present the award to him posthumously. Everyone agreed that he is the right person and the award should be presented to celebrate his contributions to Wilson County and the country.

The monthly door prize was won by Marlin and Sharon Tanneberger. The names of three people were randomly drawn for the kitty but Morgan Lyssy, Daniel W. Palitza and Michael Bender were not there to claim the cash.

The prize amount will be raised by $2 for the next meeting.

After the meeting members enjoyed Frito pie and birthday cake. Games followed.

Giddings Lodge makes donations GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge members were happy to be able to gather again for the October meeting at Silos of 77 Hall.

The lodge will donate $300 to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund.

A $300 donation also will be presented to the Blue Santa Project sponsored by Lee

County law enforcement officers. The annual program provides Christmas presents to children in the county.

In observance of Make a Difference Day, the lodge is donating $500 to the Faith Lutheran School in Warda. The monies will help with tuition costs. The school opened in August 2017 with four students. Now there

are 14 and nine of those students are from Lee County.

Four will be graduating.

The five drawing winners were Olivia Mize, Laverne Urban, Cecilia Martinez, Arthur Urban and Pat Abell.

Members enjoyed sandwiches and chips from Reba’s Restaurant.

Sharon and Marlin Tanneberger celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in October. They regularly attend Poth Lodge meetings.

In October, Lucille Novak attended her first Poth Lodge meeting since the pandemic began. She celebrated her 89th birthday in October. She has had health problems that put her at risk.

BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge officers met Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the lodge hall After much discussion they decided to cancel all regular lodge meetings for the remainder of the year. The annual Christmas dance/party scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 5, has been cancelled. The New Year’s Eve dance/party scheduled for Dec. 31 has been can-

celled.

Columbia Lodge to hold November meeting via Zoom DALLAS – Members of both Dallas lodges continue to explore the potential solutions to the issues encountered as they move toward reopening and operating the Hall during the pandemic.

The Home Association has obtained a Food and Beverage Certificate and plans are under way to fulfill the requirements that will allow the bar to reopen according to TABC guidelines. This is very encouraging news, and should be a great relief to everyone who has been worried about the financial considerations of maintaining the building.

In the meantime, Columbia Lodge members David Pippin,

Cecilia Phillips and Bobby and Juliea Wilbanks conducted the first “First Friday” event since March - but not at the Hall!

Texas Ale Project on Riverfront Boulevard hosted the fun in its outdoor biergarten. They have been “caresitting” and utilizing the game equipment for the past six months, which has included an overhaul of the lightup board, bringing it back into full functionality.

This was the first chance to put it into action for lodge members.

Fun and door prizes were had from 7-10 p.m. Columbia Lodge raised $120 to benefit operations.

Plans are already under way

Fort Worth meets Dec. 6 FORT WORTH – It’s time to mark those calendars. The next meeting of Fort Worth Lodge will be held Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. at The BRICK in Burleson. The lodge will furnish the meal.

The 2021 officers will be elected and pioneer members will be honored. There is room for social distancing or you can sit outside the room if you would feel safer. Masks are required to enter the building.

San Marcos Lodge will hold Zoom meeting Nov. 2 SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge will meet Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Members are asked to wear their patriotic attire.

Spring Branch Lodge plans holiday party for Dec. 13 BULVERDE – Spring Branch Lodge will hold its Christmas party Sunday, Dec. 13, at 2:30 p.m. at the Knibbe Ranch.

Membership pins will be presented.

The next meeting will be Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Bulverde Community Center beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Members are asked to donate personal hygiene items in observance of Make a Difference Day. The lodge met Sept. 20 at the Bulverde Community Center and welcomed eight new junior members.

Members voted to donate $100 to the Retirement Home

Christmas Fund.

President Sharon Knibbe reported that the annual lodge trip is on hold due to the uncertainty of traveling caused by COVID-19.

Condolences were sent to the families of Herman Hitzfelder, Roberta Searles, Jerry Don Rowe and Brett Schultz.

The final quarterly meeting of 2020 for Helotes Lodge is Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. A hot meal will be provided. Everyone who attends will have a chance to win a cash door prize. Photo sessions were held to benefit Saving Grace Dog Rescue on Oct. 17 in observance of Make a Difference Day. Hochheim-Prairie will meet Sunday, Nov. 1, at Turner Hall.

The social hour will begin at 5 p.m. followed by a meal and meeting.

Paul Vogt Lodge officers to continue to serve for 2021 VAN RAUB – Paul Vogt Lodge officers met in September to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the lodge.

The decision was made to suspend meetings until further notice and cancel all year-end events such as pin presentations, the 2020 Humanitarian Award presentation and Christmas celebration.

Members are encouraged to watch the Hermann Sons Life newspaper for updates and announcements on a date to return to regular operations sometime in 2021.

Cat Spring recognizes pioneers CAT SPRING – Cat Spring Lodge cancelled its June and September meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
