I overheard a group of members recently who were contemplating the most important attributes of a true fraternalist. One thought it was dedication to the lodge (attending meetings, volunteering and such) while another thought it was longevity in membership.

While these are wonderful attributes and definitely admirable characteristics, my thoughts on this subject were recently swayed by a young member.

Not long ago, I listened to Marla Beam (daughter of past Vice President Mary Beam and Director Mike Beam) speak about the tradition of Hermann Sons being passed from generation to generation. You could tell by the crack-

ing in her voice and the tears welling in her eyes that it was a topic of immense pride. She expressed how the fraternal pride passed on by her parents and her grandparents was life changing.

Her words propelled me back

to my youth and my grandfather’s desire to share his Hermann Sons pride with me. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it was one of those life-defining moments.

Of course, he was proud when I came to work for the Grand Lodge as Youth Activities Coordinator in 1982 and he would have been equally proud to see me today. But I think he was most proud that I shared his views of Hermann Sons – an organization with a history of caring and a tradition of giving.

These are the stories that compel me to share the Hermann Sons Life story with my children and my grandchildren. I am proud of my children’s and my

Wine tasting event set for Nov. 18 SAN ANTONIO – The Hermann Sons San Antonio Home Association is hosting a 3-Glass Riedel Tasting featuring Bending Branch Wines on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m. in the Home Association Ballroom. Cost is $60 per ticket and tickets are available at Eventbrite.com.

According to event organizers, proceeds from the event will be used to restore the historic Home Association building including stained glass windows in an effort to preserve the history of Hermann Sons Life in San Antonio.

While enjoying their wine and hors d’oeuvres, everyone will take part in an educational seminar about wine. An auction also will be part of the evening’s activities.

Lela Mae Fields passes away at the age of 85

Lela Mae Fields

Past Grand Vice President-Secretary/Treasurer Lela Mae Kuhn Fields passed away Oct . 14 at the age of 85 .

Lela Mae was first appointed Grand Secretary-Treasurer in July 1987 when then Grand Secretary-Treasurer Louis Hoog Jr . passed away . She had been serving as his secretary for 14 years and he recommended her for the position before he passed away . She was the first woman ever to serve in that office and on the Grand Committee .

In all she worked 31 years at the Home Office, starting on June 1, 1966, when she took a

position in the Membership Department for $275 a month . Later that year she was named head cashier (a position that no longer exists) and she served there until November 1968 when she was named secretary to then Grand Secretary-Treasurer William V .

Dielmann III .

At the 1997 Grand Lodge Convention, the officer structure was changed and she became the first Grand Vice President-Secretary/Treasurer . At the end of the year she decided to retire . Mary Beam was named to replace her .

At the time of her passing she was a member of Seguin Lodge .

She was active in other organizations as well . She was a Past Matron of Bexar County Chapter No . 616, Order of the Eastern Star, and was a member of Seguin Chapter No . 555 at the time of her death . While daughter Sherrie was involved, she served as Mother Advisor to the Seguin Assembly of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls .

After her retirement, she worked tirelessly as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, driving patients to treatments and coordinating other drivers .

Very much a “people person,” she enjoyed bowling, danc-

ing and traveling, and anything where she could laugh and have a good time .

She was preceded in death by her son, Gary Lee Albert, and husband, Charlie F . Fields . She is survived by her daughter, Sherrie Reimers, cousin Mary Guenther and sisters-in-law Catherine Bearden of Valley Mills and Dora Brooks of Austin .

Visitation was held Oct . 18 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in San Antonio . At her request, no service was held and burial services were private .

Agents attend continuing education workshop

By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Marketing COMFORT – Agents met at the Hermann Sons Life Hilltop Camp Oct. 5-7 to attend the annual Continuing Education Seminar. Hermann Sons Life Marketing Department sponsors this training event during which 12 hours of continuing education credits are offered.

The weekend started on Thursday evening with a social reception and meal. This year we had barbecue brisket and sausage with all the trimmings.

Afterwards, agents gathered in the training area for a session on client and member confidentiality issues, which complimented the recent identity protection training that was part of the Home Office Employee Summit. Afterwards, there was a movie and popcorn in the counselors’ dining room.

The movie was “The Alamo” (2004) starring Dennis Quaid, Emilio Echerravia, Jason Patric and Billy Bob Thornton. Yours truly was the head popcorn popper for the evening.

Others played cards, dominos or just socialized and caught up with friends they hadn’t seen since last year’s training.

Friday morning agents arose to enjoy a hearty full breakfast with fruit, coffee and juices. Did I mention that we eat well when we are at Hilltop? There’s something about that pure, clear Hill Country air that stirs the appetite.

We began at 8 a.m. sharp Friday with the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our great country. Our guest instructor was Mr. Danny McNaughten, a well-known insurance industry continuing education speaker. His fast-paced style and interesting facts engaged students concerning concepts related to Annuity Suitability, Senior Market Risks and the History of IRAs. At the end of Friday’s session, we welcomed Hermann Sons Life President and CEO Buddy Preuss for an address to those assembled.

President Preuss spoke about the brand identity of Hermann Sons Life, the great benefits we are

known for and how people want to be part of the great things we do for communities across Texas.

He encouraged agents to emphasize those points to everyone they speak to about our great products.

After the introduction of dignitaries, we enjoyed a happy hour complemented by a steak dinner with sides. Fellowship and camaraderie was the order of the evening. Thanks go to board members David Wolf, Sandra Jones, Mike Beam and David Noak and vice presidents Harry Werland and Samantha Schulmeier for attending the dinner and visiting with agents.

The Saturday session topics included Life Insurance Basics and Ethics and Laws.

Mr. McNaughten submits the training hours, so Marketing Analyst Ana Vasquez caught a respite this year from course curriculum

and reporting. She was very busy earlier in the year with name, law and policy change filings with the Texas Department of Insurance. Also attending were Member Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek, Underwriter Amy Heinsohn, Member Services staff members Debbie Payne and Beth Williams, all of whom hold a life insurance license.

We ended with the issuance of new agent manuals and bags before heading home to promote and gain members for the best fraternal in Texas!

Carley is new Special Representative Robinette joins staff SAN ANTONIO – Becki Carley of New Braunfels is the new fulltime Special Representative for Hermann Sons Life.

She is taking the spot previously held by Marilyn Vogt of Boerne who has retired as a fulltime member of the Marketing Team. Marilyn remains a parttime field agent.

Becki’s coverage area includes New Braunfels, Boerne, Spring Branch, Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Hondo, Del Rio, Lubbock, Abilene and El Paso as well as other West and Northwest areas.

“I am excited to welcome Becki to our team of full-time agents,” Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe said. “Becki is a strong advocate of the fraternal way of doing business and I know she

will continue to do great things for our organization.”

Becki has been a Hermann Sons Life member since 1975 and sold life insurance for Hermann Sons Life on a part-time basis from 2011 until her assignment as a Special Representative.

Becki was born and raised in Cuero. She attended Texas State University where she earned a bachelor of science degree in health information management and obtained her credentials as a registered health information administrator.

SAN ANTONIO – Donald Robinette has joined the Hermann Sons Life Marketing Team as a sales agent for the East Texas Area. Donald is a member of Piney Woods Lodge. He joined Hermann Sons Life in 2001.

A licensed agent, he will work part-time for Hermann Sons Life. He has worked as a machinist operator in Marshall since 1980.

He was born and raised in Louisiana but says he “got to Texas as soon as I could.”

He has been active in churches in his area either as a pianist, song leader or supply pastor.

Lodges reach out to those impacted by storm SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life lodges do their best to strengthen their communities all year long but their response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey has provided further evidence of the spirit of giving that prevails throughout the organization.

A total of exactly $20,000 was donated to the Home Office’s Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund.

Lodges that have donated since the last issue of the newspaper was published are: Cibolo, Shive, Boerne, Orange Grove, San Marcos, Vineta, Dunlay, Bernardo, Jackson County, Needville, Deanville, Nagel, Castroville, Lockhart, Stern, Roscoe, Hondo, Twin Sisters, Seguin, Fredericksburg, Weesatche, Kerrville, Spring Branch, Comfort, Nixon-Smiley, Hondo Victory, Hochheim-Prairie, Old Glory, Flatonia, Schwertner, Albert Kypfer, Shelby, Spring Branch, Brunhilde and the Dallas Home Association.

Individuals who have donated since the last issue of the newspaper was published are: Harvey and Marilyn Vogt, Buddy and Elizabeth Preuss, Glenford and Denise Boehme, Robert and Betty Frisby, Randall and Irene Schwertner, Rebecca Maddox and Michael and Diana Hovatter.

• Louise Schuetze Lodge made two donations. One went to the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department. The other went to Donald O’Connor, a friend of the lodge, whose Rockport home was damaged.

• Corpus Christi Lodge made a donation to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bayside. The small

‘Tee It Up for a Cause’ raises funds for camp, families SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge hosted a successful Tee It Up for Cause Golf Tournament Sept. 30 at The Republic Golf Course.

Proceeds from the tournament were to be presented to Camp Discovery and The 100 Club of San Antonio at the lodge’s November meeting.

Tournament Co-chair Brad Dietrich said, “Thank you to our wonderful sponsors, players and volunteers for your participation in this year’s tournament. We had a beautiful day at the Republic Golf Course and because of your participation we are able to assist some wonderful children, who have been diagnosed with cancer, enjoy a week long camp at Camp Discovery, as well as contribute to The 100 Club of San Antonio, which assists families of our community law enforcement and fire department who have lost their loved ones in the line of duty.”

Retirement Home

Home hosts several visitors in September COMFORT - September guests at the Retirement Home included Jim and Linda Mattocks, Carmine, agent for Round Top, Rutersville and Plum lodges; Bud and Lorrie Myers, Baytown, visitors of resident Rosie Franklin; Keith Boring, Bandera, and Robert Boring, Pflugerville, visitors of residents Chief and Trudy Boring; Amy Herrmann, Dickinson; Mary Boxwell, Poteet, visiting her parents, residents Bob and Elsie Anderson; and Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe.

Beverly Anderson’s family, four generations of Hermann Sons members, came to the Home on Sept. 10 to celebrate her Sept.

11 birthday. Beverly reports that Toucan Jim’s in Center Point was the backdrop for a fun afternoon.

Chapel service and Holy Communion were conducted by Anglican Priest David Guthrie on Sept. 25 with residents Al Schroeder assisting with communion and Kathy Bender playing the piano.

Birthday cake was served at the noon meal on Sept. 29 to honor the birthdays of Beverly Anderson, Gerry Peyronel, and Douglas Feuge.

Resident Al Schroeder received a nice surprise when he recently visited his family in Victoria.

They presented him with this car.

Al reports that the Home residents missed him at “jam fest” but he said “...I surely was HAPPY!” He is so proud of his whole family.

New Braunfels Lodge welcomes 26 new juniors NEW BRAUNFELS – New Braunfels Lodge will meet Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall. The meat will be provided and members are asked to bring side dishes or dessert.

At the Oct. 1 meeting, the lodge welcomed 26 new junior members.

Agent Shirley Huebinger reported that she had attended a continuing education workshop in October.

Members voted to make a donation to “Hugs from Home.”

Karen Harborth, Virginia Vetter and Violet Tanneberger conducted a memorial service. A white flower was placed on a cross as each of the 11 deceased members’ names was read.

Louise Schuetze Lodge will Thanksgiving celebration SAN ANTONIO – Louise Schuetze Lodge will celebrate Thanksgiving at the meeting scheduled for Monday, Nov. 13. The turkey will be provided and side dishes and desserts will be furnished by the members. Fall colors will be the theme for this meeting.

Lisa McCorquodale-Robalin won the split-the-pot prize at a recent meeting.

In observance of Make a Difference Day, members voted to make a $250 donation to the Lamar Fire Department in Lamar to help with Hurricane Harvey expenses. Another $250 donation was made to a regular guest and friend of the lodge, Donnie O’Connor, whose home

Poth-Floresville School of Dance places first in parade Above - The dancers from the Poth-Floresville School of Dance took first place with their entry in the Floresville Children’s Peanut Festival.

Seguin School of Dance’s scarecrow wins second place Left - The Seguin School of Dance created a scarecrow display for the Guadalupe County Fair and Rodeo Downtown Scarecrow Contest and won Best Non-Profit Scarecrow Second Place. The display was set up in the window at Keller Williams Realty on the corner of Austin and Donegan streets in downtown Seguin. The scarecrow’s name was Grace.

La Vernia will meet Nov. 19 LA VERNIA – La Vernia Lodge held a workday on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the lodge property.

A total of nine members and friends donned work gloves and mowed and trimmed trees.

Afterwards all met for lunch at a local restaurant.

Lodge officers are working on replacing the lodge hall air conditioning unit. The current unit is old and repair is not cost effective.

Bids from air conditioning companies are being requested and will be reviewed.

The lodge’s annual picnic originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21 was cancelled.

The next business meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m. at the lodge hall. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend. If you plan to attend, please call Sharon Tanneberger at 830-779-4641 or 210-827-0526 with the number of attendees no later than Nov. 13.

Richland Lodge holds annual membership event RICHLAND – Richland Lodge held its annual membership event in October.

President and CEO Buddy Preuss was on hand to present Gilbert Weiss and Ruth Jean Pfennig with their 75-year membership pins. The brother and sister joined just one week apart. Gilbert joined on Sept. 6, 1942. Ruth joined on Sept. 13, 1942.

The lodge presented the 2017 Humanitarian Award to a surprised Marvin Graw.

New members also were recognized.

Lodge President Tammy Kelley led the program. A catered meal was served. Members played dominoes at the end of the day.

The lodge will host its annual memorial event on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. A cake and punch reception will follow.

A sympathy card was sent to C.D. and Carolyn Jenkins following the loss of a sister-in-law. A get-well card was sent to Jo Ann Mueller. Both expressed their thanks to the lodge.

SAN ANTONIO – Anton Wenzel Lodge will celebrate Thanksgiving with a turkey dinner at the November meeting. Members are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert. The lodge will celebrate October and November birthdays at this meeting.

The lodge will host a garage sale Nov. 11 at the home of Merlinda Elizondo, 919 Rayburn Dr., San Antonio. Members who would like to donate are asked to call the lodge office at 210815-3468. Volunteers will be needed the day of the sale.

The lodge celebrated its 120th anniversary at the Oct. 3 meeting. The lodge provided a meal prepared by the members. A Hermann Sons Life Dance Group performed along the Kazamba Drum and Dance Group.

Maxwell Lodge presents 2017 Humanitarian Award MAXWELL – Maxwell Lodge has selected Bruce and Peggy Germer to receive the 2017 Humanitarian Award.

They are Hermann Sons Life members and members of Maxwell Ebenezer Lutheran Church where they have worn many different hats and served on many committees. They have two grown children, a daughter who lives in Houston and a son who lives locally.

Their priority is to serve their community and give to those in need. Peggy is currently Sunday school superintendent and a teacher. She picks up the youth so they are able to attend Sunday school and takes this opportunity to teach them the Bible. She

visits senior citizens, sends birthday and get-well cards and feeds the homeless.

Bruce and Peggy regularly contribute to Senior Day at the church fellowship hall cooking meals, cleaning and setting up for the meals. They sponsor the Advent Christmas and Easter morning breakfast every year.

They have played an important part in the new addition to the church fellowship hall and continue to work hard to upgrade and promote the new building.

After the tragic hot air balloon crash of July 2016, Bruce and Peggy worked many hours assisting the families of the victims and provided food. On the first anniversary of the crash, they again

gave families the opportunity to worship together and opened the fellowship hall to them and provided a hot meal.

They were involved in planning the 500-year ELCA anniversary that was held Oct. 21 at Ebenezer Church.

Bruce and Peggy also volunteer in many community events.

Bruce works with and sponsors the Chisholm Trail Rodeo and also through his insurance company sponsors 4-H clubs in Caldwell, Travis and Williamson counties.

Peggy delivers Meals on Wheels and both have contributed through time and resources to help families in need. Peggy and Bruce sponsor a yearly Christmas

PAIGE – Paige Lodge will sponsor the Loblolly 4-H Club Chili Supper on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Paige Community Center starting at 4 p.m. This is the lodge’s Make a Difference Day and Matching Funds project.

Members will celebrate Thanksgiving with a lunch prior to the Nov. 12 meeting. The lodge will furnish the fried chicken and members are asked to bring side dishes and desserts.

Members and guests enjoyed a potluck lunch before the Oct. 8 meeting.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Herbert Eschberger.

Moulton Lodge holds annual plates-to-go fund-raiser

Moulton Lodge held its annual plates-to-go fund-raiser in September. The event was originally scheduled for August but was rescheduled because of Hurricane Harvey. Preparing desserts were Lorene Fishbeck, Sharon Etlinger, Justin Anderle, Lucile Gold, Ivan Schulmeier and Mrs. Hughes.

Preparing the steaks for the Moulton Lodge fund-raiser were Billy Castro, Ivan Schulmeier, Sharon Etlinger, John Koch, Chuck Greive, Bradley Anderle, Jr. Chaloupka and August Etlinger.

Ready to put the to-go plates together for the Moulton Lodge fund-raiser were students from student council and cheerleaders as well as Dennis Schacherl, Albert Krejci and Dennis Tousek. The annual event raises money for scholarships and other charitable donations.

On the Friday before the Moulton Lodge fund-raiser volunteers peeled and cut potatoes. Helpers were Evelyn Kubicek, Anna and son Jaxon Bartos as well as John Koch and Eugene Anderle.

Old Glory Lodge to serve turkey dinner on Nov. 5 OLD GLORY – Old Glory Lodge will meet Sunday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m. Turkey and dressing will be served and members are asked to bring a vegetable or dessert.

At the Oct. 1 meeting, members observed a moment of silence in memory of Melvin Rosenquist of Stamford.

Members were reminded of the Famous Sausage Supper scheduled for Oct. 14.

Members expressed their pleasure with the way the lodge hall looks with a new roof and coat of paint.

Plum plans holiday party for Dec. 2 PLUM – Plum Lodge met Sept.

11 at the Prairie Valley Schoolhouse. The lodge will meet at the same place on Monday, Nov. 13. The buffet meal is served at 6 p.m. but members and guests are always encouraged to come an hour or so earlier for fellowship and refreshments.

The lodge’s Christmas party will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Prairie Valley Schoolhouse. Further plans will be made and provided at a later date.

Thanks go to Walter Wessels for grilling hamburgers for the September meeting. Thanks also to the members who brought desserts or any other accouterments for the burgers.

In observance of Make a Difference Day, members agreed to make a $200 donation to the disaster relief fund that is providing aid to flood victims in Fayette County.

Members also approved giving a $50 donation to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund.

Membership Coordinator Genelda Stahmer reported sending a get-well card to Douglas Schroeder and a thinking-of-you card to Phillip Wessels. Sympathy cards were sent to Christine Sabrsula following the death of her husband, Jack C. Sabrsula, who had been a member of the lodge since September 1970, to Virginia Schroeder following the passing of her brother and to Robert and Linda Stahmer following the death of her father.

A welcome baby card was sent to Jonathan and Katherine Stahmer following the birth of their daughter, Olivia. Her grandparents are Robert and Linda Stahmer and Genelda Stahmer is her great-grandmother. Another welcome

baby card was sent to Kristin and Ryan Brade following the birth of their daughter, Allyson Paige. Allyson’s grandparents are Kenneth and Charlene Harbers and her great-grandmother is Myrtle Harbers.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to August birthday celebrants Willie Hunger, Charlene Meinen and Gloria Raschke and September celebrants Annie Cook, Linda Poncik and Gene Wessels.

“Happy Anniversary” was sung to Willie and Rose Hunger whose anniversary was Aug. 28 and Wilbert and Bonnie Hoffman who celebrated their anniversary in September.

Vineta Lodge will hold Thanksgiving dinner Nov. 2 SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will celebrate Thanksgiving with a turkey dinner on Nov. 2. Members are asked to make reservations by calling Ruth Bailey at 210-602-5147.

Members are asked to bring new or gently used children’s books to be donated to an orphanage for girls in Honduras in support of an Eagle Scout project.

A social gathering will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 15. Members will play bunco and then have lunch.

At the meeting in October, Ruth Bailey and Frances Bara were elected to be the lodge’s Home Association representatives.

New junior members welcomed were Sophia Burnam, Emma Bazany and Paislie Morris.

Members enjoyed a covered dish and sausage meal furnished by the lodge. Ruth Bailey furnished a cake because her birthday is in October.

The lodge extends its sympathy to the family of Rosalee Kiolbassa, a member for 50 years, and Geraldine Taylor, a member for 69 years.

Fredericksburg will elect officers at Nov. 6 meeting FREDERICKSBURG – Fredericksburg Lodge will meet Tuesday, Nov. 6. The lodge will provide the sausage for the meal and members are asked to bring a side dish, plate and utensils. Kirby presents pins during anniversary celebration KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will meet Monday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. The lodge will provide the meat.

Members are asked to bring side dishes and/or desserts. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Members celebrated the lodge’s anniversary at the October meeting. The lodge hall was decorated for the occasion and a catered meal of pork steaks, baked potatoes, green beans and desserts was served.

Honored at the memorial table were past members Roman and Irene Rittimann.

Vice President of Operations Samantha Schulmeier presented membership pins to four members.

Gregory Klaerner received his 50-year pin. He has been a member since Nov. 22, 1967. Gregory shared memories of spending time at meetings, barbecues, Night in Old San Antonio, golf at Camp Discovery and other events with his dad and grandmother.

Laura Ewald received her 60year pin. She has been a member since Jan. 4, 1957. She shared memories of helping with the cash register on game nights.

Also receiving 60-year pins were Lillian Brietzke and her daughter, Wanda Uecker. Lillian has been a member since Sept. 17, 1957.

She shared memories of working at the Home Office for 27 years, working at the lodge on game nights and doing the bookkeeping, cleaning and mowing for the lodge. Wanda has been a member since Sept. 1, 1957. She shared memories of her time at Camp.

Lodge members got to hear from some of the campers. Fiveyear camper Lila Freudenrich said she was sad it was her last year as a camper. Some of the things she liked and will miss are ceramics, drama and the dance. She looks forward to applying for the Counselor-in-Training program.

Lila’s brother Johnny Freudenrich served as a junior counselor this year. He said he liked being able to see things from the other side as a counselor. He liked that you can be who you are and no one will judge you. He said he was proud to be a junior counselor and looks forward to next year.

Camper Hestn Raborn liked making new friends, playing sports and most of all his Rocketry class. He said liked being able to send the rockets off to space. He put a large motor on one rocket thinking it would go further and not come back. He laughed and said, “it didn’t go as planned and came back.”

Hestn’s brother, five-year camper and Counselor in Training Hayden Raborn shared that he was glad to be able to go back to Camp this year as a CIT. He said he liked getting to see things from a different side and looks forward to going back next year.

The lodge Christmas party is set for Sunday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m.

A catered meal will be served at 2 p.m. Students from the Kirby School of Dance will perform at 3 p.m. and games will follow. Members are asked to pay a refundable $5 (the money will be returned

at the party). Non-members are will pay a non-refundable $10.

Anyone wanting to attend must get tickets no later than Nov. 20 by contacting Tammy Haecker at 210-601-6802.

Members are asked to bring donations for Boysville to the party.

The boys and girls served at Boysville range in age from newborn to 18. Dancers can bring their donations to their family performance on Dec. 19.

The lodge thanks members and guests who came together to form a softball team to represent the lodge at the HONOR22 softball tournament. The team didn’t come in first, but had a great time playing together. The players would like to point out that they never lost a coin toss.

The lodge would also like to thank members, dancers and campers who donated items for the Fisher House at San Antonio Military Medical Center. This was the lodge’s Make a Difference Day project.

Highland Lakes urges members to Dallas to elect officers attend important meeting Dec. 3 at November meeting HIGHLAND HAVEN – Highland Lakes Lodge will meet Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Highland Haven Community Center. The social hour will begin at noon with the meeting to follow. After the meeting, a holiday meal featuring a ham provided by the lodge will be served.

The proposed lodge bylaw amendment that a member who is a felon is not eligible to be an officer of the lodge was approved on its third reading.

This amendment will be reported to the Home Office for its approval. The Home Office was informed when the proposal was first introduced.

Members send condolences to the family of Carolyn A. McKay. She passed away on June 27 at the age of 70.

She lived in Katy.

Her family says she was a faithful member of the Catholic Church. She was devoted to her family and loved to sew and bowl. A donation will be made to the Hermann Sons Life Retirement Home in her memory.

Congratulations to Andy Schellenberg who won the attendance prize.

by Hurricane Harvey.

The city is requiring a new fire alarm control panel for the Dallas Hall. The Home Association has approved the expense and selected a company to do the work.

There will not be a regular meeting in December. The Christmas luncheon and special public gathering will be held Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Hall. Save the date and plan to come. More details will be available later.

Mission-Alamo Lodge presents membership pins

SAN ANTONIO – The highlight of the Mission-Alamo Lodge meeting in September was the presentation of two 60-year membership pins and one 50-year membership pin.

Director Suzanne Hildebrand presented the 60-year pins to Georgia Tabor Hall and Beverly J. Maze and the 50-year pin to Mary Lynn Hejjaj.

Columbia to celebrate Thanksgiving with dinner Nov. 12 DALLAS – Fall fell overnight and everybody in Dallas will be wearing their parkas and sipping hot chocolate while tasting a fresh pumpkin pie.

Speaking of seasons, word is that Columbia Lodge’s Oktoberfest was a huge success once again. Thanks go to all who volunteered and coordinated the annual Fall Festival. The Savoy Swing Band swung after the Frohsinn Band entertained with

traditional polkas and waltzes.

People danced, people ate, people socialized.

The dinner was outstanding thanks to Debra Hundley and Jean Ernst who goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure all are well fed. These ladies are always there, in the kitchen, working to ensure that everyone is fed and everyone owes them a debt of gratitude and salutations for all the selfless work

they put in at the Hall.

There were many others who volunteered and decorated the Hall and served dinner and assisted in many ways. Thank you all so much.

Columbia Lodge met Oct. 1 at the Hall. Several new members were welcomed. Hope they will volunteer and serve the lodge and Home Association and Hermann Sons Life.

The next meeting is slated for

Jourdanton Lodge presents memorial scholarship JOURDANTON – Lindsey Tudyk is the recipient of the 2017 Martin O. Wiede Memorial Scholarship from Jourdanton Lodge.

Lindsey is a graduate of Pleasanton High School. She will use the $500 scholarship at Texas State University where she will study nursing.

Part of the application was an essay on what Hermann Sons Life has meant to the applicant.

Lindsay’s essay reads as follows: “My involvement in Hermann Sons has provided me with many meaningful experiences.

The two main Hermann Sons activities I participated in were dance and Hermann Sons Youth Camp, and both of these helped me grow and provided me with useful skills throughout my life.

“In dance, I was not the best dancer in the class because I started at a later age than many of the other kids. As a result, I had to work harder to learn all the moves that we did in our dances. I learned about worth ethic and how to manage when I am not the most proficient person in the group, and how to better myself and improve my

skills. I also made many close friends in my dance class, and since we spent several hours together practicing and performing, we got to know each other very well. Every time I hear a song we danced to, it reminds me of the good times I had with my friends in dance class.

“Hermann Sons Youth Camp was probably the most valuable experience that Hermann Sons provided me. When I went to HSYC, I had never been away from my home and family before. I learned how to deal with homesickness, and expand my

comfort zone. The experiences I had at Camp made it easier to adapt in future situations when I was away from home. Since I will be moving to college in the fall, I will continue to use these life lessons I learned. Like in dance, I made lots of friends, and have many good memories from Camp.

“Thanks to Hermann Sons, I have developed so many life skills and friendships. Everything I learned will help me in the future, whether it is in the workforce or in my life in general.”

Siemering recognizes pioneers SAN ANTONIO – Siemering Lodge members have spent 2017 exploring the diversity of the community in many ways.

They have experienced different games, foods, lineage and culture in general.

At the most recent meeting, they explored their Cajun side with spicy and mild chicken, red beans and rice and much more.

The meal was topped off with a homemade cheesecake made

by Financial Secretary-Treasurer Paul Hess.

ing, President Ana Vasquez presented Carl A. Hafer Sr. from New Braunfels with his 70-year pin. Carl shared a few stories about his life as a member.

It was reported that Ann Patek is doing well. She is the oldest lodge member at the age of 94.

Helotes will elect officers Dec. 12 HELOTES – Helotes Lodge members have approved a $1,000 donation to the Home Office’s Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund.

In observance of Make a Difference Day, Helotes Lodge members helped raise funds to support Helotes Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Susie Michalczak’s Saving Grace Dog Rescue of San Antonio, a 501(c)(3). During the Thomas J. Henry Bark in the Park event on Saturday, Oct. 7, Rebecca Henley took fall photos of pets and families in costumes while other volunteers managed the booth. The Home Office will match a portion of the funds raised as a Matching Funds project.

Difference Day, Helotes Lodge provided lunch to a group of Habitat for Humanity volunteers. Shirley Jonas chaired this project.

Members enjoyed dinner at Grady’s BBQ at the Sept. 12 meeting.

The lodge wishes to thank United Methodist Church for renting Braun Hall for the past 18 months. Efforts are under way to re-establish Braun Hall as a dance hall and event center. The board is working to fill the Hall Manager position. They are looking for an honest, energetic, organized individual with flexible hours who works well with people.

Duties will include but are not limited to scheduling/attending events, maintaining

San Marcos Lodge to hold Christmas party Dec. 10 SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge will meet Monday, Nov. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the La Vista Club House on Redwood Road.

President Agnes Dreibrodt thanked everyone who participated in the Make a Difference Day project by making monetary donations to the Hays Caldwell Women’s Shelter’s Adopt a Family Christmas Fund.

President Dreibrodt noted that the Nominating Committee and 2018 Calendar Committee of Peggy Meiners (chair),

Lillian Cargil, Leola Gourley, Janice Kuhen, Shirley Faske and herself would be meeting.

The lodge donated $500 from its Games Fund to the Brenham Fire Department to help with costs to the department while the National Guard was stationed at the Fireman’s Training Center during and after Hurricane Har-

Members who have passed away this year are Dorothy Cathcart, Earl Ewald, Joni Huepers, Frances Durham and most recently Peggy

Roehl. The lodge will make a donation to the Retirement Home in her memory.

Named to the Humanitarian Award Committee were Ruby Wulf, Theresa Sanders-Smith and Marie Stryk.

Two junior members who attended Hermann Sons Life Camp this summer, Donovan Guzman and Connor Kornmayer, who was

a Counselor-in-Training, shared their experiences. Each family received a $100 gift from the lodge to help with Camp expenses.

Members voted to donate $200 per person to lodge members who were flooded during Hurricane Harvey.

The lodge had received its certificate for participation in Join Hands Day.

Agent Sarah Spencer talked about the importance of life insurance to everyone no matter the age.

The guest speaker was Ben Diaz, funeral director with Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City. He explained some of the expenses that are incurred with funerals and how to plan ahead.

Both Ben and wife Janene are

members of Gulf Lodge. They distributed packets of information and 2018 pocket planners and pens. They also held a drawing for door prizes. Recipients were Ruby Wulf and Henry Bennison.

Ellinger to elect officers

FLATONIA – Flatonia Lodge has chosen an 80-year member of Hermann Sons Life as its 2017 Humanitarian Award recipient.

The lodge recently presented Martha Tauch with her 80-year pin and the Humanitarian Award certificate. Martha has been a member since June 27, 1936.

Also honored was Rebecca Maddox who received her 60year pin. The Austin resident has been a member since April 4, 1957.

Martha has served as an officer in her lodge and has spent a lifetime in service to her community. She was active in the PTA organization where she served in every officer position including president. She was awarded with a PTA Texas Honorary Life Membership in 1971.

She was a room mother while her two sons were in school and she was a Cub Scout den mother for four years.

She served three years on the Flatonia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and was the

She has served on the Rail Park Board of Directors and was a charter member of the E.A. Arnim Archives and Museum Board of Directors where she served for 25-plus years including three as president of the board.

The lodge was working on a Make a Difference project in October, but one project has already been done. Magazines that were

donated have been delivered to the local dialysis center. The center is always so grateful for these magazines, so members are asked to continue to save them and they will be collected in three months.

Thanks go to Nancy Kelly who will be going to Cleburne to present the lodge’s donation as a Bronze Sponsor for the Children’s Advocacy Center golf tournament. The lodge also will be making a donation to the Grief Support Camp.

The Youth Committee is working on ideas for the youth from Fort Worth Lodge who attend Camp each year. They have given Camp scholarships each year, but want to do something different in 2018. Campers should be looking for a postcard from the committee in January about the new project.

Cat Spring Christmas party set for Dec. 14

The meeting dates for 2018 have been tentatively set. They will be held Feb. 7, April 4, June 6, Aug. 1, Oct. 3 and Dec. 7 (Christmas party). All meetings are held in the Wells Fargo Bank Community Room at 301 Junction Highway in Kerrville unless otherwise noted.

Cibolo Lodge to host Christmas party on Dec. 9 CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge held its Halloween Spooktakular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 5, at Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Junior costume contest winners this year were Maezey Bierstedt as Peppa Pig, Brenley Bierstedt as Wonder Woman and Cheyenne Kuhlman as a ‘70’s girl. Each winner received a $10 cash award. Adult costume contest winners were Dorothy Schneider as a fraulein, Sherry Rakowitz as Flo from Progressive Insurance and Dawn Bierstedt as Smartie Pants.

This year’s rummage sale was the best yet. The Matching Funds event raised $1,400 for the Clemens 4-H Club. The check will be presented at the lodge’s Christmas party scheduled for Dec. 9 at Bexar Social Hall. All members are invited to attend.

This year’s party will begin at 2:30 p.m. when the students from the Comfort School of Dance will perform. Punch and cookies will follow the performance. Santa should be arriving shortly thereafter and the annual party will begin at 4 p.m.

This year’s party is BYOB with setups available at the bar along with frozen margaritas. Tickets are on sale now at a cost of $8 for members and $11 for guests.

Comfort Lodge holds Mini Trick-or-Treat for juniors COMFORT – Comfort Lodge will meet Monday, Nov. 13, at the VFW Hall in Comfort. The social will begin at 5 p.m. and will be followed with dinner at 6 p.m.

During the business meeting that follows, members will discuss the Christmas party and the next Join Hands Day event.

Members are asked to bring a salad for the meal. Dessert and drinks will be provided.

The lodge celebrated Halloween at the Oct. 9 meeting. The second annual Mini Trick-orTreat for junior members was held. Thanks go to all of the lodge members who brought a treat to share with the children.

The lodge was recognized for its Join Hands Day project that raised money for the Grief Support Session. The golf tournament raised $2,500. The lodge will be holding the second annual golf tournament on Saturday, March 24, at The Buckhorn in Comfort. More details will be available in the Hermann Sons Life newspaper in the coming months.

Harmonia Lodge to celebrate Thanksgiving Nov. 9 SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge will celebrate Thanksgiving at the Nov. 9 meeting.

Snoga’s will cater a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Proceeds from the Tee It Up for a Cause Golf Tournament will be presented to representatives of Camp Discovery and The 100 Club of San Antonio.

Members were informed of the passing of several members. In July, Paul A. Richardson Sr., age

89, passed away. He had been a member since 1969. Robert E. Cermin, age 91, also passed away in July. He had been a member since 1945. In August, John M. Keller, age 80, passed away. He had been a member since 1958. On Sept. 6, Lynroe Tschirhart passed away at the age of 82. He was serving as an officer at the time of his passing.

He had been a member since 1950.

Members are asked to bring an unwrapped toy or monetary donation to the November or December meetings. They will be donated to the Blue Santa Program operated by the San Antonio Police Officers Association.

Da Costa will host annual Youth Christmas Party Dec. 4 DA COSTA – Da Costa Lodge will host the annual Youth Christmas Party on Monday, Dec. 4, at 6:30 p.m. Students from the local dance school will perform and Santa will make an appearance. Cookies, punch and a monetary gift will be presented to all junior members in attendance.

The Western Dance Club will host the Night Riders on Nov. 18 at the lodge hall. The dance is open to the public.

The next meeting will not be held until Feb. 13, 2018, beginning at 6 p.m.
