SAN ANTONIO – In December 2021, the Hermann Sons Home Association was awarded a Community Grant from the Conservation Society of San Antonio providing the money needed to fully repair the lower stainedglass window in front of the building.
On March 23, the historic window was carefully removed and taken to the Whitworth Stained Glass facility in New Braunfels for repairs. Removing the glass took most of the day, and repairs will take several weeks. Wood panels have been installed in the meantime. Whitworth is accredited by the Stained Glass Association of America and has more than 50 years of experience. “We know our window is in good hands,” said Jen Stanford, San Antonio Home Association volunteer.
An announcement will be made when the window has been replaced and is ready to welcome visitors.
“Thank you to our Home Association Board President Lori Todd for submitting the grant application that got the attention of the Conservation Society,” Stanford said. “Also, thank you to our bar patrons who over the last three years have made donations, enabling us to pay for the entire cost of the restoration.”
The large stained glass in the Ballroom depicting “Hermann the Cherusker” was fully restored several years ago with money generated through fund-raising efforts.
