Online registration under way Camp registration is doing great!

Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly reports enrollment is already at 40 percent capacity. Be sure to register soon. Online registration is available at hermannsonslife.org – scroll to the bottom of the website home page. You will need the code included in the Camp information provided to eligible juniors.

Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett has been busy getting the Camp facilities in tip-top shape. A workday was held April 23 and volunteers helped clean, paint and did some yardwork at the sites. Ian’s also overseeing the complete overhaul of the Riverside swimming pool, not to mention getting all staff in place.

Preparation is also under way for this year’s Grief Camp for youth who have lost a parent or sibling.

During this grief support session, campers not only take part in Camp activities but work with licensed therapists in groups and individually. This camp is made possible by generous donations. Visit our website to contribute or to learn more.

Camp Open House is set for June 11 at the Hilltop and

Riverside sites from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will allow campers’ families and friends to take a tour of Camp, participate in activities, enjoy lunch and meet the Camp staff. The pools will be open as well as the Challenge Course so be sure to bring swimsuits and sneakers.

Be sure to visit our online Store for the latest Camp merchandise! Some of the new items include flashlight pens, pedometers, bucket hats, misters and push pop key fobs. The special Mini-Camp for 8- and 9-year-olds will be held July 28-31. The three-night camp is held at Hilltop and gives first-time campers the chance to experience all the fun of Camp without being away from home for an entire week.

Schlitterbahn Family Fun Day set for June 25 NEW BRAUNFELS – The Annual Family Fun Day at Schlitterbahn-New Braunfels will be held Saturday, June 25, beginning at 10 a.m.

Invitations have been sent to members of the Future Club-Shining Stars. They will be admitted free of charge and will receive a free drink cup with purchase of one chaperone ticket.

Chaperone ticket price is listed on the invitation. Shining Stars must be registered members as of April 2022.

All members are welcome to attend at a discounted price of $50. Tickets must be paid in advance through the Hermann Sons Life website, hermannsonslife.org. Click on “Store.”

Deadline to order tickets is June 13. Children 2 and under can attend free of charge. Members can also purchase a drink cup for a reduced price of $14. The cup must also be purchased in advance. The cup can be refilled all day anywhere in the park.

Tickets include admission and a hamburger and hot dog buffet lunch in the designated area of Schlitterbahn East (Surfenburg) that is reserved for Hermann Sons Life.

Saying goodbye is not so easy to do

By KATHIE NINNEMAN Former Communications Director As soon as I announced my plans to retire at the end of June, I knew that I wanted/ needed to write a farewell column for the newspaper . But now as I sit here trying to write that column, I am struggling to find the right words .

How do you wrap up the past 22 years of your life in one column? How do you explain that Hermann Sons Life has been more than the place where I work? How do you explain that this organization, that these people, have become a part of my life – a very big part of my life – and that letting go is going to be so hard?

Let’s see if I can do it .

Let me begin by thanking a few people for what they have meant to me during my time here I must start with Grand President Leroy Muehlstein . Leroy was Grand President when I took the job in 2000 .

I didn’t know much about Hermann Sons .

He was a wonderful mentor . He taught me what it meant to be a true fraternalist because he was a true fraternalist . I loved to watch him “work a room,” going from person to person to engage in conversation .

Someone else to whom I am eternally grateful is Lee “Papa” Vogel . Not many other people got to call him “Papa,” but I did .

Some of my fondest memories are of working side-by-side with him and Kim Krueger planning and executing a Join Hands Day project or figuring out how we could best provide for people who had been impacted by a natural disaster .

My co-workers here at the Home Office

have become so much more than that to me . They are my other family . We have supported each other through the good times and the not so good times – personally and professionally . My life would not have been the same without these people in it .

I also want to thank my own family – my husband Dennis, our son John, my daughter Liz and son-in-law Sam and our beautiful granddaughter Ella . They have always known that this was much more than a job to me . They never questioned that and for that I am eternally grateful .

I have left the most important person to last . That is my assistant – and now your communications director – Elaine Soto .

Elaine and I have known each other for more than 35 years . We met when we were both working for the Seguin daily newspaper back in the mid 1980s . We quickly became best friends . It makes me cry just thinking about how important she is to me .

In 2001, when I was looking to hire an assistant because Holly Wood was retiring and I was moving into her position, I knew exactly who I wanted to come and work for me .

There isn’t a life-changing moment we haven’t shared . We have been there for each other through it all .

Thank you, Elaine, for being my person .

As you will read on Page 3, I am stepping aside from my regular duties and will be focusing on some special projects between now and the end of June . One of those is the upcoming Convention Assembly . This will be my sixth one of these and I am looking forward to the chance to see a lot of people before I leave .

dear to my heart . I am updating the written history of Hermann Sons . If you’ve been around for a while, you know that in 1990, the Grand Lodge celebrated its 100th anniversary . To mark the occasion, Louis Engelke, past Grand President and a journalist in his own right, wrote and published the history of Hermann Sons . No one has updated that history since then and that was 32 years ago .

President Eugene Zollinger is allowing me to stay on so that I can take on this task . I am so excited about it . I have already started doing the research and I am fascinated by everything I am learning .

I also want to get the museum artifacts cataloged . You would not believe the boxes and boxes of memorabilia that are stored in this building . I want it all organized so when someone calls looking for information, it can be easily found .

Hermann Sons Life has a long and proud history . Those men in New York who founded this organization back in 1840 were looking for a place to belong .

No doubt the world has changed in the past 180-plus years since then, but that need for a place to belong remains the same .

Hermann Sons Life is still that place . We don’t all have German ancestors anymore .

But we are still people with a common bond . We are people who want a better life for ourselves, for our children and for the world around us . Working together we can make a difference . Working together we will ensure that Hermann Sons Life will be here for generations to come . We owe it to those who came before us and those who will follow .

Home Office announces changes in Communications Department The Hermann Sons Life Home Office has announced Elaine Hernandez Soto is the new communications director upon the retirement of Kathie Ninneman. New assistant communications director is Hannah Ruiz-Gruver.

Elaine has served as assistant communications director of Hermann Sons Life for more than 20 years. Hired to help produce the Hermann Sons Life newspaper in 2002, she and Kathie changed production to a digital format for the first time.

Since then, Elaine has also taken on the responsibilities of website maintenance, social media management, advertising campaigns, design and production of sales materials, photography and more.

Prior to her employment at Hermann Sons Life, Elaine worked for Seguin’s local newspaper, the Seguin Gazette-Enterprise for several years with Kathie who was managing editor for the paper before coming to Hermann Sons Life. Elaine held various positions

from news and feature writer to assistant editor. A life-long resident of Seguin, she has three grown daughters and is an active grandma to eight grandchildren.

“I am so excited about my promotion although it’s bittersweet as Kathie and I have worked side by side for more than 35 years,” she said. “Of course, in all that time we developed a very strong friendship – a sisterhood. I know I have really big shoes to fill, but I am proud to be able to take over the reins and continue the work of promoting Hermann Sons Life in the most positive way. I’m anxious to see what the future holds for Hermann Sons Life News and the organization.”

Hannah comes to Hermann Sons Life with experience in graphic design, newspaper production, social media management and photography. She previously worked for the Seguin Gazette as creative director and editor of the “Seguin Magazine.”

She lives in Seguin with her hus-

band, Jason. Together they have six children and one grandchild.

“I am honored that Kathie and Elaine have chosen me to continue on the legacy that they have built,” Hannah said. “I am also excited to see what the future holds for the newspaper and communications department.”

Kathie has been at Hermann Sons Life since October 2000. She has been the communications director since January 2002 when Holly Wood retired.

She will be staying until the end of June as Director of Special Projects. She will be focusing on work related to the upcoming Convention Assembly and is writing a new history of Hermann Sons Life and organizing the museum.

“I am excited to be able to hand over the reins to my longtime assistant, Elaine Soto. And we have found the perfect person to become her assistant. Together they will make a great team,” Kathie said. “I am super excited to be able to get to work full-time on a new

rabilia to sort through. I want to leave it as organized as possible so that in the future people will be able to find the answers to their historical questions quickly.”

15 - The Goodtime Polka and Waltz Club of New Braunfels will host a dance from 3-6:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 353 Seguin Ave., New Braunfels. Sound Check from Needville will provide music.

JUNE 5 - Kirby Lodge will hold Senior Bingo at 2 p.m. at the hall. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. You must be 55 years or older to attend. Light snacks will be provided. There will be 20 games.

By ROBIN CZARNEK Vice President of Sales So many things in our world have changed daily, especially since the onset of the pandemic. We’ve had to adapt to new ways of doing business, working remotely, celebrating life’s events in more creative ways, you name it! As Socrates said, “ …the secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

So many new, exciting changes are coming to Hermann Sons Life! We have new technology coming, convention is around the corner, the prospect of new products on the horizon, new agents joining us and we are seeing great improvements at the Camp thanks to the hard work of Ian and his

team. Camp numbers are up this year, so even more of our junior members will get to enjoy these improvements. With the convention coming in May and the election of our new board of directors, it’s a great time to get involved and talk with the candidates about the changes you’d like to see and how we can reinvent ourselves so that future generations can be a part of Hermann Sons Life!

It’s important that we have discussions about what appeals to our younger generations and upcoming members so we can ensure we meet their needs and stay relevant as an organization. If you’re interested in talking with the candidates for the upcoming board of directors election, their information and credentials are detailed in

the April newspaper which you can find online.

While change is difficult, it opens the door for opportunities. Without change, we become stagnant as people and as an organization. It’s never easy and comes with its own set of challenges, but embracing change means that we can thrive again and become even stronger. Finding new ways to grow and change represents more ways to help others and strengthen our community.

Let’s work together to change, get involved and make a difference!

‘Nonnie’ takes over care of parakeets while daughter away

By ROBIN CZARNEK Vice President of Sales Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting the home of a Hermann Sons Life member, Ollie Gean Whatley and her “boys,” parakeets Collin and Justin to whom Ollie Gean is Nonnie. I wanted to share a bit of their story with you. In June 2021, Ollie Gean’s daughter, Mary, a ship steward for the last 20 years, was called to work, which meant having to ask her mom to care for Collin and Justin.

At the onset of Nonnie duty, Ollie Gean was charged with weaning Collin and Justin and getting them used to baby food. While getting in a feeding routine with Justin and Collin, she learned they have very different personalities with Collin being very impatient and a messy eater often throwing food, while Justin is neat, calm and the patient one of the two. Collin and Justin are Mary’s beloved parakeets. Mary discovered her love for birds when her captain in Louisiana needed help caring for his birds and Mary was hooked. Since then, Mary has enjoyed being a parent to her feathered babies. While Mary was able to take them on previous trips, she was unable to do so on this latest one.

Once the unlikely trio settled into a routine, Collin and Justin adjusted quite well to life at their Nonnie’s house. They live a lifestyle most birds can only dream of. They are fed what could only be considered culinary delicacies for most birds. Their Nonnie cooks for them daily with meals ranging from seasonal fruits, vegetables, egg whites, Malt-o-Meal, oatmeal and even macaroni and cheese and Chicken A La King. While what’s on the menu varies daily, some of their favorite items are potatoes of all kinds, sweet bell peppers, watermelon and

cantaloupe. When Ollie Gean eats at one of her favorite local restaurants, the Wimberley Café, she brings home a doggy bag (or perhaps I should say birdy bag) for the boys, which recently consisted of baked chicken, potatoes and green beans.

The boys have become adept travelers and enjoy going to visit Mrs. Whatley’s other daughter, Jean.

While the boys have become used to travelling, they still favor a consistent routine. They wake up singing songs to their Nonnie, ready for breakfast. They enjoy their afternoon nap in Nonnie’s room and then wake up chattering, ready for their dinner. The boys are ready for bedtime right at 7:30 and prefer a quiet, dark room, which means Nonnie does more

by a wagon. Ollie Gean does her best to recycle, even using her Hermann Sons Life newspapers to line the mobile home of Collin and Justin, but only after reading it cover-to-cover, of course! While some may say the boys are spoiled, Mary will tell you it is merely more proof of the extraordinary woman Ollie Gean Whatley is. Mary is reminded what an amazing mother her mom is when she sees how lovingly she cares for Collin and Justin. We are proud to have the Whatley family as members of Hermann Sons Life!

Hermann Sons Life Comfort Campership Application for Summer 2022

This application is for children who need financial assistance in order to attend Hermann Sons Life Camp. The application can be completed by a parent/guardian, but the short answer portion should be completed by the child.

The Hermann Sons Life Comfort camperships pay half of the camper fee ($150.00 is half of the fee for a full week, $60 is half of the fee for the mini-camp session). Five camperships are awarded to Comfort Lodge members in good standing and one campership is awarded to any Hermann Sons Life member in good standing. The camperships being awarded to Comfort Lodge members are awarded on a firstrequests-received basis and there is no application deadline.

The campership awarded to any member is based on application evaluations by the Campership Committee and the application postmark deadline is May 27th. Applicants will be notified as to whether or not they were selected by June 1st.

Campers who receive camperships from Comfort Lodge MUST still complete the online application and pay in full, but Comfort lodge will send a check for half of the camper fee to the address listed on the receipt for payment once attendance is confirmed for their selected week through the Home Office.

Checks will be mailed on Monday of the week your camper attends Camp.

Mel’s Lanes set to host bowling tournament AUSTIN – The Hermann Sons Life Statewide Bowling Tournament will be held July 30-31 and Aug. 6-7 at Mel’s Lone Star Lanes in Georgetown.

Tournament Rules • At least two members of the team must be a member of Hermann Sons Life as of July 30, 2022. Two non-members per team is allowed.

• Non USBC bowlers may pay an affiliate membership fee of $20, which will provide high score recognition.

• Handicap is 90% from 220 for each bowler per event.

• IMPORTANT - READ CAREFULLY: It shall be each bowler’s responsibility to determine that the submitted average is correct. Failure to use the correct average shall disqualify the score if submitted average is lower than correct average thereby resulting in a lower classification or more handicap. Prize winnings shall be based on the submitted average if it is higher than the correct average. However, corrections in averages may be permitted up to the completion of the first game of a series. Every entry blank must have each bowler’s highest USBC Certified 2020-2021 book average based on 21 games or more at the time of participation in the tournament. Bowlers not having a 2020-2021 average must use highest 2021-2022 book average based on 21 games. Bowlers not having 2020-2021 or 2021-2022 book average must use 2022 Summer average of nine games or more in one league at time of participation. Bowlers not having any of the above averages must enter with a scratch average of 220 for the first nine games bowled in the tournament. Bowlers will then establish a tournament average to be used the following year. Bowlers not having any of the above averages, but who bowled 9 games in the 2021 tournament may use the average for those 9 games in the 2022 tournament. USBC Rule 319(A-2) is waived (10 or more pins increase in average).

Grant awarded for window restoration SAN ANTONIO – In December 2021, the Hermann Sons Home Association was awarded a Community Grant from the Conservation Society of San Antonio providing the money needed to fully repair the lower stainedglass window in front of the building.

On March 23, the historic window was carefully removed and taken to the Whitworth Stained Glass facility in New Braunfels for repairs. Removing the glass took most of the day, and repairs will

take several weeks. Wood panels have been installed in the meantime. Whitworth is accredited by the Stained Glass Association of America and has more than 50 years of experience.

“We know our window is in good hands,” said Jen Stanford, San Antonio Home Association volunteer.

An announcement will be made when the window has been replaced and is ready to welcome visitors.

“Thank you to our Home Asso-

ciation Board President Lori Todd for submitting the grant application that got the attention of the Conservation Society,” Stanford said. “Also, thank you to our bar patrons who over the last three years have made donations, enabling us to pay for the entire cost of the restoration.”

The large stained glass in the Ballroom depicting “Hermann the Cherusker” was fully restored several years ago with money generated through fund-raising efforts.

Twin Sisters plans pin presentations, fish fry for June 5 TWIN SISTERS – Twin Sisters Lodge will present membership pins and serve a fish fry meal Sunday, June 5, at 1:30 p.m.

New sales agent John Moore attended the April meeting.

The trustees reported the lodge bathrooms will be cleaned and repaired. They are looking into replacing the sinks and possibly adding cabinets for storage. The roof will also be inspected for leaks.

The Join Hands Day project was set for May 14. Members will work on cleaning up the Blanco Community Cemetery and will ask other local groups to help.

Deanville Lodge selected for site clean-up DEANVILLE – Deanville Lodge will meet April 24. At the March meeting, plans for the annual Fourth of July celebration were discussed.

DaCosta members gather for Annual Spring Fling DACOSTA – DaCosta Lodge will meet at 6 p.m. on May 2 – note the date change.

The Annual Spring Fling was held April 9 followed by a public dance with entertainment by the Tainted Heart Band. Everyone of all ages had fun playing the cake walk, bean bag toss, egg races, musical chairs, coloring, egg hunting, taking pictures with the Easter Bunny and danc-

ing the night away.

Forty children participated in the egg hunts which were grouped by age. The Spring Fling event was open to members and the community.

The lodge has compiled fundraiser cookbooks and those are now available for purchase. They are $20 each and $6 shipping (if needed). Please call Diane Stastny at 361-579-8512 or order

DaCosta Lodge members and community members enjoyed the lodge’s Annual Spring Fling.

Poth will present donations POTH – Poth Lodge President Pamela Cutsinger presented Robert Billimek a 75-year membership pin at the April meeting.

He was accompanied by wife Gladys.

In observance of Join Hands Day, the lodge will donate $50 to the Poth Band Boosters and $25 to the Greater San Marcos Youth Council.

Members discussed the Hermann Sons Life Convention Assembly and agreed to reimburse delegates their registration fees.

Information on the Board of Directors candidates was provided. A review of the candidates was planned.

The lodge is currently reviewing scholarship applications.

A discussion of filling the vice president position was planned for the following month.

Seguin Lodge will present scholarships in May SEGUIN – Seguin Lodge member Dottie Kallies received her 60-year membership pin during the March meeting. Tables were decorated in St. Patrick’s Day theme by Tammy Beutnagel and members enjoyed a meal of tamales and chili along with covered dishes provided by the members.

Other recipients receiving pins but not in attendance included Karen Lynn DeHarde, Janie Ann Moltz and Darlene E. Reinhard, 50-year membership pins; Shirley Ann Wittig, David W. Zunker and Randy Lane Zunker, 60-year pins.

Paul Gescheidle gave a report on the upcoming fund-raiser for youth scholarships and reported response has been good.

The lodge scholarship will be presented in May. Applications went out in April and need to be submitted as soon as possible.

Members were reminded Camp season is coming up and registration is now open.

Dottie Kallies reported sending a sympathy card to the family of Linda Muehlstein who passed away in February.

Tammy Beutnagel donated two prizes and the winners were Joe Barnes and Velma Huebner.

The $5 attendance-prize winners were Cheryl Kolbe, Allen Gescheidle, Brian Beutnagel, Paul Gescheidle and Mary Allison. Tim Kolbe won the splitthe-pot prize.

The names of Michael Friesenhahn of Marion and Joyce Elaine Bode of Katy were drawn for the progressive pot but neither were present to win. Next month the pot will be $80. Must be present to win.

Hermann Sons Life members are invited to attend lodge meetings held the third Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m.

Ham dinner planned

Kypfer-Salge will meet May 6

Kypfer-Salge Lodge recognized birthday celebrant Chester Jenke at the April meeting.

CLEAR SPRINGS – Kypfer-Salge Lodge will meet on May 6. Kery and Kathy Noble will provide ham in honor of their anniversary. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

At the April meeting, Executive Camp Director Ian “Gunner” Brassett was in attendance to talk about Camp. Camp is for eligible boys and girls ages 8-14.

Birthday celebrant Chester Jenke was recognized.

Thank you to Art and Merry Brinkkoeter for cooking the hamburgers. Thank you also to the volunteers who helped clean the lodge yard.

Nelrose Koepp gave the Cheer Committee Report and said Molly Koepp was recovering from surgery and member Tim Schlichting passed away on March 19. A moment of silence was observed in his honor and condolences extended to his family. Members are asked to send reports of sick members or deaths to Nelrose.

Fort Worth to recognize pin recipients FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge will meet at 3 p.m. June 12 at Sammy’s Restaurant in Burleson. Pin recipients for this year will be recognized as well as members from the Join Hands Day projects.

Congratulations to pin recipients Frances Wyatt, 50 years, a member since May 7, 1972; Cecil McLaughlin, 60 years, a member since May 6, 1962; and Donna Beene, 75 years, a member since May 22, 1947.

Cibolo Lodge will honor mothers at May meeting CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge will honor mothers at the May meeting. The main dish is lasagna, and the men are responsible for providing desserts.

At the April meeting, new junior members were welcomed. They included Jameson Shane Rakowitz, Owen Cole Rutherford, Grant Matthew Huebener and Isaiah Manuel Estep.

Members reviewed several different charities for the lodge’s Matching Funds donation. Representatives from the charities have been invited to attend a meeting and provide more information.

A moment of silence was held for Lillian Pope who has passed away.

Marta Prada Pelaez, president and CEO of Family Violence Prevention Services, sent a thank you letter for

the lodge’s monetary donation to the Battered Women’s Shelter.

Attendance-prize winners were Sheri Rakowitz, Fay Fey and Emma Rakowitz.

Joy Brown’s deviled eggs were voted as the best side dish and Fay Fey’s brownies were voted as the best dessert of the evening.

Best Easter egg winners were Joy Brown’s Easter bunny deviled eggs and Emma Rakowitz’s decorated Easter eggs.

The lodge thanks the Marion Independent School District for hosting the Health and Safety Fair. The lodge agent attended and reported it was a fantastic event with a very diverse group of presenters and there was a good turnout including the Spurs Coyote as a special guest.
