Retirement Home event draws 700

COMFORT – Some 700 Hermann Sons members and Comfort area residents gathered at the Hermann Sons Retirement Home on April 23 to honor the building that is now 100 years old.

The highlight of the day was the unveiling of a plaque that commemorates the 100th anniversary. It is located near the covered pavilion on the front lawn of the Home. The honor of unveiling the plaque was given to Manager Brenda Gunnink and Assistant Manager Brenda Treiber. The Retirement Home residents stood close by as the black drape was removed.

Earlier in the day, guests lined up to get a plate of food catered by Bill Miller BBQ. Large tents had been set up on the parking lot in the back of the Home so that everyone was able to sit and eat together. Refreshments included beer, iced tea and lemonade. Rennie Guenther and the Happy Travelers Band provided the musical entertainment.

Grand Lodge’s Casino Night benefits CASA The Grand Lodge’s Join Hands Day Casino Night was a big success. The event raised $4,000 that will be donated to Child Advocates of San Antonio. Approximately 100 Hermann Sons members and guests attended the event held in the San Antonio Home Association Ballroom. The gamblers played black jack, roulette, craps and poker. Grand President's Message

A centennial celebration I distinctly remember the first time I visited Comfort, Texas.

It was 1978. I was a college freshman and was planning to work my first summer at Hermann Sons Youth Camp as a counselor.

When my Opa and Oma learned of my impending trip they insisted we visit Comfort before summer to meet Tante Emma, my great-great aunt. Family was important to Oma and Opa, and it was especially important that I meet her if we were going to be neighbors for the next three months.

I quickly learned that Hermann Sons values were closely aligned with my own when during my first week at Camp we walked up to the Altenheim to meet the residents of our Hermann Sons Retirement Home. After all, we would be neighbors all summer. For me, they would become so much more.

Elizabeth and I and members of our family were among the hundreds of Hermann Sons family that attended the 100th Anniversary of the Hermann Sons Retirement Home this past month.

Tante Emma lived to be 100 years old. And I am happy to say the same of our wonderful Retirement Home. When this “Castle on the Hill” was first built it was to be a place of carefree respite for our members. 100 years later it still delivers on the promises made by our forefathers.

It is remarkable for a place such as this to have survived and thrived over the course of a century. It makes me happy when I witness the support it receives from our members and the community of Comfort. And the energy and enthusiasm of the residents, staff and membership will keep the tradition of the Home strong for centuries more.

On the day of the celebration, I talked with children of past residents, people who remember first visiting the Home 50 years ago, citizens of Comfort, proud Hermann Sons members and others with fond memories who share a common bond – admiration and affection for this home and the care and friendship which envelops it.

But the most special part of the day was visiting with the residents. Their pride for the Home and their life there is most evident. I thank them for trusting Hermann Sons to provide the Home for all of them and for sharing the day with all of us.

At the end of the day a plaque was unveiled honoring the building and the day and dedicated to the past, present and future residents of the Hermann Sons Retirement Home. May this place of solitude, respite and care always be a shining testament to the devotion of Hermann Sons members.

a four-glass riedel wine Tasting event will be held June 24 to raise money for the restoration of the stained glass window of Hermann the Cherusker

SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge No. 1 is hosting a Riedel Wine Tasting Event on Friday, June 24, to raise money for the restoration of the stained glass window of Hermann the Cherusker that is featured in the San Antonio Home Association Ballroom.

A total of $4,287 of the $10,000 goal has been raised so far for the restoration of the stained glass window that was created in 1911 by Helen Ferne Goolsby Slimp.

The wine tasting begins at 6 p.m. in the Ballroom. For $80 ($86.60 with tax), guests will receive four Riedel Veritas wine glasses to take home. They will get to taste wines and receive education about the glasses from a Riedel representative. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served and a silent auction will take place.

Tickets can be purchased online or by sending the form on Page 16 with payment.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Caro-Lina Rosé and Texas 51 Blanc Du Bois from Lara Vineyard will be featured in the first three glasses.

In the fourth glass will be an oaked chardonnay from Pilot Knob Vineyard. Lara Vineyard is the only vineyard in Bexar County and its winemakers and owners will be attending the event to talk about their wines. Each glass sold on its own costs $34.50, but participants at the event will keep all four glasses as part of their registration.

“This fund-raiser was chosen because it is fun, it gives participants something to take home and it is fitting to use glass to raise money for the stained glass project. The ballroom is also a perfect location for this type of event,” Grand President Buddy Preuss said.

Wonderful day at the Home It was a wonderful day on April 23 at the Retirement Home’s 100th Anniversary Celebration. Close to 700 members and friends attended the special event that began with a social and included a delicious meal and a program that featured an interesting history of the Home. The resident members along with Home Manager Brenda Gunnink and Assistant Manager Brenda Treiber took part in the dedication of a commemorative plaque in the Home’s front yard near the covered pavilion. Going through some old photos, I found this one taken at the Retirement Home’s 75th Anniversary Celebration. It’s a picture of my parents, Mike and myself, and our three children. How time flies!

The Retirement Home Committee held its quarterly meeting on April 4. Two members have been approved for residency.

Members always are invited to visit the Home and enjoy a tour.

The Grand Committee gathered on April 24 and 25 for its quarterly meeting. The minutes will be published next month to allow room for more coverage of the Retirement Home celebration.

Join Hands Day on May 7 was so much fun in San Antonio.

Fraternalists and friends met at the Hermann Sons Home Association Building for a Casino Night benefitting Child Advocates of San Antonio. Good food, lots of fun and entertainment, nice prizes and a live and silent auction were all part of the evening. Check out the photos of this great event on our website and in this issue.

Hermann Sons members throughout the state came together to support many lodge projects on Join Hands Day. Thank you for your help in bringing communities together to help one another.

The month of June has more opportunities for members to be involved. The Camp Open House will be held on Saturday, June 11, from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. This is an opportune time to meet the Camp staff and see the many activities offered during a Camp session. The next day the 2016 season of Camp will officially open.

June 14 is Flag Day and its 238th birthday. Lodges are encouraged to honor our flag at their June meeting or on Flag Day with a special ceremony.

June 18 will be the day for the outing at Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels for Hermann Sons Future Club Shining Star members and their families.

golf tourney raises scholarship funds SAN ANTONIO – The sixth annual Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament was held at The Republic Golf Club in San Antonio on April 9.

Thanks to support from the golfers, sponsors and volunteers, a total of $8,542.42 was added to the scholarship fund.

The first place team included Ed Bertaud, Jeremy Lightfoot, Jody Bounds and Kyle Everett. Coy Pfeiffer, Jason Salesberry, Kerry Schindler and Miguel Ramirez were on the sec-

ond place team. Coming in third was the team of Chris Douglas, Hal Wahlers, Larry Stanley and Mike Moran.

The fourth place team included Dale Storbeck, Ian Spranger, Joey Lalanne and Michael Gaffney. The players on these teams received prizes and were recognized at the awards luncheon.

Several contests were held for golfers during the day.

The team of Ian Spranger, Michael Gaffney, Dale Storbeck and Joey Lalanne finished in fourth place in the golf tournament. Michael is one of Shannon’s brothers.

The golf tournament would not be possible without all of the volunteers. Don Krieg and Shannon’s father, Mike Gaffney, worked one of the contest holes.

Bowling event set for Austin

AUSTIN – The 52nd Annual Hermann Sons State Bowling Tournament will be held in Austin this summer. The tournament will be held the weekends of July 30-31 and Aug. 6-7 at Dart Bowl, 5700 Grover, Austin.

For the first time this year, teams will be allowed to use one non-Hermann Sons member.

The rules for the tournament are listed here.

1. At least three members of the team must be a member of Hermann Sons as of July 30, 2016. Only one non-member per team is allowed.

2. Non USBC bowlers may pay an affiliate membership fee of $20, which will provide high score recognition.

3. Handicap is 90% from 220 for each bowler per event.

4. IMPORTANT - READ CAREFULLY: It shall be each bowler’s responsibility to determine that the submitted average is correct. Failure to use the correct average shall disqualify the score if submitted average is lower than correct average thereby resulting in a lower classification or more handicap.

Prize winnings shall be based on the submitted average if it is higher than the correct average. However, corrections in averages may be permitted up to the completion of the first game of a series.

Every entry blank must have each bowler’s highest USBC Certified 2014-2015 book average based on 21 games or more at the time of participation in the tournament.

Bowlers not having a 20142015 average must use highest 2015-2016 book average based on 21 games. Bowlers not having a 2014-2015 or 2015-2016 book average must use 2016 Summer average of nine games or more in one league at time of participation.

What causes the hiccups?

Hiccups may not be a medical emergency, but they certainly can be a nuisance. Also known as “singultus,” hiccups can come out of nowhere and last for quite some time.

An effective way to alleviate hiccups has proven elusive to many, forcing many people to ponder if they can be prevented.

According to the resource Kids Health, the funny noises and other annoying ticks associated with hiccups can be blamed in part on the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of the chest. When the diaphragm is working correctly, it helps to regulate breathing. In a contracted position, the diaphragm lets air into the lungs.

When the diaphragm relaxes, the lungs release carbon dioxide.

Hiccups occur when the diaphragm starts contracting

Medical Notes erratically and out of rhythm.

These spasms can cause the larynx and vocal cords to close suddenly, resulting in a sharp intake of air and the hiccup chirp that occurs thereafter.

Hiccups can stop and start abruptly, for no reason at all. But certain things may contribute to hiccups. These include: • eating spicy food • drinking carbonated beverages • sudden changes in air temperature • excitement or emotional stress • swallowing too much air • overeating

Many cases of hiccups last only a few minutes, but for some people hiccups can last a while longer. Persistent hiccups are caused by injury or irritation to the nerves that control the movement of the diaphragm. Sometimes this results from acid reflux, degenerative nerve diseases, like multiple sclerosis, or even brain injury. Hiccups also may last longer due to overuse of tobacco or alcohol. Males tend to be more prone to hiccups than females.

While there are a number of ways to treat hiccups, there is no definitive cure. Holding one’s breath or putting sugar under the tongue are some of the more popular remedies.

Hiccups are largely a nuisance and not a medical emergency. However, knowing how to get them under control can be a relief.

Youth Camp will host annual Open House June 11

By KATIE KLOHN Executive Camp Director COMFORT – The staff at Hermann Sons Youth Camp is looking forward to welcoming future campers, current campers, past campers and their families to Open House on Saturday, June 11. The fun will begin at both the Hilltop and Riverside facilities at 9:30 a.m. and the festivities will wrap up at 2 p.m. Lunch will be served at both sites from 11:30 a.m.12:30 p.m.

Be sure to bring your swimsuit if you are interested in swimming and your sneakers if you would like to take a ride on the zip line at the challenge course. In addition, tours will be given throughout the day and families will be able to participate in a variety of activ-

ities including archery, crafts, basketball and many more.

Open House is a great time to introduce future and firsttime campers to their Camp home. Past campers and their families often return to Camp for Open House to see what has changed.

tours at both Riverside and Hilltop. On these tours visitors are guided through the Camp and are able to see a dorm, the dining hall, visit the clinic and learn where the different activities take place.

2. The parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents of many campers attended Camp when they were younger. One of the best things is hearing past campers reminiscing about their years at Camp and sharing that with the Camp staff as well as the current and future campers.

Retirement Home awards scholarships to five seniors COMFORT – Five members of Hermann Sons have been chosen to receive this year’s Hermann Sons Retirement Home Scholarships. This year’s recipients are Zane Gray, a member of Cibolo Lodge No. 147; William G. Voigt, a member of Richland Lodge No. 107; Rees Edwin Saathoff, a member of Hondo Lodge No. 236; Amanda Nicole Miller, a member of Jourdanton Lodge No. 310; and Trey Balzen, a member of Mission-Alamo Lodge No. 80.

The recipients were chosen by a group of volunteer educators from Comfort High School.

The judges complimented the students on the quality of their essays and said selecting the winners was hard.

There were eight applications from Region 1, three from Region 2, seven from Region 3; 14 from Region 4; and three from Region 5.

The applications were judged on neatness, grammar, spelling and structure of the 300-word essay “What Hermann Sons means to me.”

Zane Ethan Gray is the son of John and Gail Gray of Universal City. Zane is graduating from Samuel Clemens High School and plans to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio where he will study electrical engineering. Zane also received one of the Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarships this year.

He attended Hermann Sons

Youth Camp for five years as a camper, two years as a counselor-in-training and last year worked as a junior counselor.

In his essay, Zane wrote, “Hermann Sons has been a big part of my life. In fact, I am a fifth generation Hermann Sons member. I have been attending Cibolo Lodge meetings since I was in a baby carrier.

“As a camper, HSYC taught me many life skills. I learned how to listen, laugh and bond with people I hadn’t met before.

Getting to be a counselor-intraining and junior counselor allowed me the opportunity to become a leader, role model and individual that taught other kids life skills, how to work through challenges and how to live life happy.

“I am thankful that my family knows the importance of life insurance and chose to share the Hermann Sons legacy with me so that I am able to experience all of Hermann Sons’ fraternal benefits. I will hopefully be able to share this great Hermann Sons legacy with my kids because all of my Hermann Sons experiences have helped shape me into the person I am today.”

William G. Voigt is the son of Wendel and Lynne’ Voigt of Pflugerville. He is graduating from Pflugerville High School and plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station where he will study aerospace engineering. He credits his rocketry class at Hermann Sons Youth Camp with inspir-

ing his love of rockets and the space industry.

William attended HSYC for five years.

In his essay, William wrote, “HSYC helped me to positively embrace new situations without fear. Being a Hermann Sons camper has helped to shape the person I am today.

In a way, the Camp experience has prepared me for my upcoming transition to college at Texas A&M University. The supportive HSYC counselors cared about every camper.

“As well as experiencing community, camaraderie and compassion, HSYC reinforced the important principles of honesty, integrity and respect.

We respected our dorms, each other and our counselors. I truly believe that if every youth attended Hermann Sons Youth Camp, they would have stronger virtues and principles to draw upon. I count myself very fortunate to have been a five-year camper at HSYC. As I continue to grow, I will always stay true to the virtues and principles that are so very important and present at HSYC. Attending HSYC made a positive, lifelong impression and for that I thank Hermann Sons.”

Rees Edwin Saathoff is the son of Cornell and Eleanor Saathoff of Hondo. He is graduating from Hondo High School and will attend the University of Texas at Austin where he will study mechanical engineering.

He attended Hermann Sons Youth Camp for four years.

In his essay, Rees wrote, “True community begins at home yet reaches out so much further in my small town of Hondo. Growing up in my tight-knit community has given me so much more than just love and support. It is here that trials and successes are shared.

It is here where you find the willingness to step in and lend a hand and it is here where I was introduced to Hermann Sons and all that it embraces.

“Nothing in this world beats the secure feeling of belonging which is what I found from my Hermann Sons experiences. Whether it was an actionpacked week at Camp shared with my buddies or a crisp fall night enjoying the annual lodge barbecue meal, the feeling that always springs forth is community and that incredible sense of belonging.

“The solid foundation I was afforded through Hermann Sons has given me a strong moral compass to follow and emulate. As I prepare to enter the University of Texas at Austin I take with me necessary life skills acquired through my Hermann Sons community and the discipline needed to navigate the road ahead. I am thankful and humbled to be a part of this organization and I hope to embody the integrity it represents for years to come.”

Amanda Nicole Miller is the daughter of Karen Miller of Pleasanton. She is graduating

from Pleasanton High School and will attend Texas A&M University in College Station where she will major in business administration.

She took part in the Hermann Sons dance program.

In her essay, Amanda wrote, “Hermann Sons, in my book, means unity, aid, support, and financial protection. My father was killed in the line of duty in 1999, which was right before my second birthday.

His death led to my mother having to provide for me as a single parent. The whole community was there for us when we needed help the most.

They provided not only emotional, but financial support as well. As a young child, I had no idea what these selfless acts meant, but now with a more mature mind, the significance is clearer to me. I am most grateful for the people who put my family before themselves. They helped us through the worst time of our lives.

“I believe Hermann Sons helps people in situations similar to mine, and even people who need much more help.

Everyone will eventually go through a tough time, but not everyone will receive guidance and assistance such as what Hermann Sons offers. I think it is wonderful that Hermann Sons contributes amenities that can change people’s lives for the greater good.

In his essay, he wrote, “An old family friend: that is what

Hermann Sons means to me.

The younger generations of my family have all had the enlightening experience of attending HSYC. So at family gatherings when the word ‘camp’ is mentioned, a flood of camp memories becomes the topic of conversation. The discussion usually leads to how spending a week at camp opens your eyes to a variety of life skills that you just cannot learn until you experience them. Life skills like how to make friends

and keep them, how to show good sportsmanship even though you are not an athlete, and how to become a problem solver even without your parents around. As a family, we joke about the silly things we had to learn the hard way.

Like taking a shower is necessary if you want to keep your friends, applying sunscreen is important, and no, you cannot put it on the night before, and cleaning up after yourself can be a bonus . . . it just might

lead to your dorm winning an ice cream.

“I believe like an old family friend that Hermann Sons has given me the chance to learn that problems do not solve themselves, respect goes a long way and saying goodbye is really hard . . . especially to a camp friend. Thus like an old friend Hermann Sons is an organization that has been there to see me through as I learn on my own things about life, myself and others.”

Elgin dancers perform in recital

Ganado holds April recital GANADO – The Ganado School of Dance recital was held April 30. Prior to the recital, officers from Jackson County Lodge No. 318 met and agreed to make a donation to the Ganado School District for use of the auditorium for the recital.

Rose Chovanec, president of the Parents’ Club, welcomed the audience. She introduced Sayra Martinka, a member of the Grand Lodge’s Fraternal Activities Committee. Sister Martinka brought greetings from the Grand Lodge. She reminded those in attendance this recital was a compilation of talent, hard work, fun and fellowship. Those in attendance were encouraged to

visit the website to learn more about Hermann Sons.

“On Broadway” was the theme for the recital. The students performed ballet, jazz, tap and lyrical dance routines.

The recital concluded with a grand finale. Each dancer was introduced and presented a gift from the Parents’ Club by the teacher, Kaila Spiller.

The Elgin School of Dance held its recital April 30. This is only the second year that this school has been open serving junior members in the greater Austin area.

Hochheim-Prairie presents dance recital YOAKUM – The Hochheim-Prairie School of Dance presented its “Dance Through The Decades” recital on May 14 in the Yoakum High School Auditorium.

The recital took audience remember back to the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s with music and trivia about those years.

Tamara Rogers, president of the Parents’ Club, welcomed those attending and introduced Janice Fait, a member of the Grand Lodge Youth Activities Committee, who delivered a brief message.

The recital opened with all the dancers performing a ballet routine to “Mixed Decades” followed by the youngest group performing to “Hound Dog” much to the audience’s delight.

CASA to receive $4,000 donation SAN ANTONIO – A donation of $4,000 will be made to Child Advocates of San Antonio. The money was raised during the Grand Lodge’s Join Hands Day Casino Night held May 7 in the Ballroom of the San Antonio Home Association Building.

The event drew 100 people who paid $25 each for the opportunity to play casino games including black jack, poker, roulette and craps. Each player was given $1,000 in chips. If they needed more playing money they could make a $20 donation and get another $1,000 in chips.

At the end of the evening, they exchanged their chips

for tickets. They dropped those tickets into buckets for a chance to win a prize donated by area businesses.

A silent auction also was held during the event. Grand President Buddy Preuss served as the auctioneer for the live auction that was held.

The mission of CASA is to recruit, train and supervise court-appointed volunteer advocates for abused and neglected children and youth.

Forrest Miller, developement coordinator for CASA, attended Casino Night with his wife and they enjoyed playing games and interacting with Hermann Sons members.

Miller talked about the CASA program and thanked everyone for their support.

Grand Vice PresidentFraternal Kim Krueger also thanked everyone for attending.

“What a great event this turned out to be,” Sister Krueger said. “Everyone had a good time raising money for a very worthy cause. Hermann Sons is proud to be able to support CASA and the work that it is doing in the San Antonio and surrounding area.”

Grand President Preuss echoed that sentiment in the remarks he made before the auction began.

The students donated the all wood chairs to the Grand Lodge to use as prizes for the Join Hands Day Casino Night that raised funds for CASA. “We were so excited when the students wanted to take part in the project by donating these chairs that they had made,” Community Service Coordinator Laura Adams said. “Their contribution was a big part of the evening’s success.”

The program began at 1:30 p.m. Resident Helen Widner lead everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. Sister Widner served on the planning committee for the celebration and did extensive research of the Comfort Heritage Foundation archives in the months leading up to the event. Her research was used in the history of the Home that was presented during the program.

Pastor James Holt from the Comfort Baptist Church gave

the invocation after which Public Relations Director Kathie Ninneman presented the history of the Home. She recalled how the Comfort community campaigned to have the Home located nearby and offered information about the day that the Home was dedicated on May 11, 1916. She also highlighted some of the other major events that have occurred at the Home in the past 100 years.

Grand President Buddy Preuss then addressed the crowd. He recalled his first trip to Comfort to visit his great-great aunt. Her name was Tante Emma and she lived to be 100 years old.

“And I am happy to say the same of our wonderful Retirement Home,” Grand

President Preuss said. “When this ‘Castle on the Hill’ was first built it was to be a place of carefree respite for our members. 100 years later it still delivers on the promises made by our forefathers.”

He added, “It is remarkable for a place such as this to have survived and thrived over the course of a century. It makes me happy when I witness the support it receives from our members and the community of Comfort. And the energy and enthusiasm of the residents, staff and membership will keep the tradition of the Home strong for centuries more.”

Grand President Preuss then called for the unveiling of the plaque after which guests were invited to gather for a panoramic photo.

During the Retirement Home celebration, Jane Haberman sold jewelry to benefit the Home’s Scholarship Fund.

Generous attendees purchased more than $500 worth of bracelets, necklaces, pins and tacks.

Home hosts 100th Anniversary Celebration COMFORT – Retirement Home residents welcomed close to 700 guests for the 100th Anniversary Celebration on April 23. God granted us glorious weather after onagain/off-again rain and storms the week prior. Birds were singing, puffy white clouds were forming in a beautiful blue sky, there was bright sunshine and a nice breeze greeted this long awaited day. Home staff and residents had been preparing the Home for weeks.

The Retirement Home Committee held its quarterly meeting on April 4.

Pastor Shelley Simmont of Immanuel Lutheran Church

in Comfort conducted chapel service and Holy Communion on April 25. Resident Kathy Bender played the piano and Al Schroeder assisted with Holy Communion.

On April 29, birthday cake and ice cream were served at the noon meal to honor residents Trudy Boring, Billie DeSalme, Cheryll Cain, Vernell Homilius, Ross Murphy and Kathryn Raines.

We welcome two new residents to our Home. Cheryll Cain came to us from Siemering Lodge No. 32 and Willa Mae Pyle joined us from Kerrville Lodge No. 12.

On April 2, Bandera County Lodge No. 81 and the San Antonio Ukulele Ladies and Gents provided entertainment and an ice cream social for residents. There was lots of sing-a-long and toe-tapping fun for all!

Helotes leases hall to church HELOTES – The Helotes Hermann Sons Home Association board of Braun Hall entered into a lease agreement with United Methodist Church earlier this year. The church has been holding services at the hall for several years and is in the process of building a permanent sanctuary at another location.

Hall rentals and public dances are temporarily suspended along with the softball league.

Public dances and hall rentals will resume after 2017.

The hall has been a fixture in Northwest Bexar County for many years. Helotes Lodge was established in June of 1893 and will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2018.

Helotes Lodge will continue to hold quarterly meetings at the hall on the second Tuesday of March, June, September and December.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m.

A community fund-raiser

and rummage sale will be held the fourth Saturday in September.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14, which also is Flag Day. A Flag Day celebration will be part of the meeting so wear red white and blue.

Membership pins also will be presented.

Unreported until recently, Leroy E. Harbich, age 57, passed away Dec. 28, 1995.

He had been a member since 1956. Also unreported until recently, James Page Meyers, age 56, passed away Feb. 15, 2004. He had been a member since 1953. William Stephen Williamson, age 68, passed away Jan. 29. He had been a member since 1948. Johnny Edward Schroeder, age 67, passed away March 6. He had

been a member since 1958.

Byron L. Leflore, age 80, passed away March 8. He had been a member since 1985.

Mike Beam was elected to replace Mike Gumpp as the lodge’s second representative on the board of the Home Association.

Stern Lodge takes part in Join Hands Day project SEGUIN – Stern Lodge No. 143 encourages members to attend the Aug. 7 meeting and have a chance to win an attendance prize.

At the last meeting, members enjoyed a social hour and a dinner of chicken fried steak with assorted pies for dessert.

Members participated in a Join Hands Day project on Saturday, May 7. A collection station for items for military care packages was set up at the H.U. Wood American Legion Post No. 245 in Seguin. The lodge, along with Seguin Lodge No. 37, the American Legion Post and the Naval JROTC

from Seguin High School, sponsored the event. The Grand Lodge sponsors the “Hugs from Home” project and sends the packages to personnel serving overseas.

Meetings will not be held in June or July.

In observance of Join Hands Day, the lodge will collect food for the Poth Food Pantry.

Round Top Lodge hosts livestock show leaders ROUND TOP – Fourteen participants and leaders from the Fayette County Livestock Show made a presentation at the April 28 meeting of Round Top Lodge No. 151.

Telling members about their hog projects were Ty and Brayden Dallmeyer and Lucas and Ellee Sodolak.

Rylan and Faith Stork presented information about their lamb projects including the fact that they raise their own show lambs. Their parents, Robbie and Gwen Stork, shared project stories.

Rabbits were shown by Ty Zapalac who shared lots of valuable rabbit project facts with input from Delannie Pesch. Ainsley Goehring talked about her chicken and heifer projects. She also raised rabbits.

Clay Goehring added information about the livestock show. Jay Zapalac and Justin Pesch spoke about the show funds.

At the end of the presentation, President Linda Mattocks presented donations to each show fund on behalf of the lodge.

Lila Garlin reported sending Easter cards to all the shutins and asked for information about members on the sick list.

Correspondence from Genell Rhode was read along with thank-you notes.

President Mattocks reviewed information about the country store that the lodge was planning to man during the Round TopWarrenton Fire Department feast. The goal for the May 21 event was to raise $500.

With matching funds from the Grand Lodge, the lodge would be able to make a $1,000 donation to the fire department.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Jim Mattocks, Clay Goehring and Bob Porter.

Brenham members discuss fund-raiser ideas BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge No. 6 members met April 8 following a dinner of ham, vegetables and desserts.

Birthday celebrants recognized for April were Marvin Marburger, Evelyn Plueckhahn and Betty Schramm. Anniversary celebrants were Richard and Pearlie Hanath, 56 years, and Bill and Bernice Hughlett, 18 years.

The Cheer Committee sent a get-well card to Mary Kelm. Frieda Kay passed away Sept.

7, 2009, at the age of 89. She lived in Riverside, Calif. Erika M. Mitchell passed away Feb. 11, 2010, at the age of 79.

She lived in Irving. Also he reported Bobbye Oswalt, a member of Columbia Lodge No. 66, passed away in April.

She was a friend to many in Dallas Lodge.

Edelweiss-Magnolia members attend celebration Edelweiss-Magnolia Lodge No. 47 members enjoyed attending the Retirement Home’s 100th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, April 23.

The program provided hundreds of Hermann Sons members and friends the opportunity to commemorate the establishment of the Retirement Home. Good barbecue, good music and great weather provided an environment for old and new friends to enjoy the great outdoors of the Hill Country. Home resident and friend Susan McGuire played docent giving the Houston group a guided tour of the building and grounds.

Kerrville will hold ‘picnic’ June 1 KERRVILLE – Kerrville Lodge No. 12 will meet June 1 at the Wells Fargo Community Room. A short meeting will be held and a picnic-style meal will be served. The ladies are asked to bring sandwiches and the trimmings and the men are asked to bring chips and dips.

Schulenburg plans fund-raiser SCHULENBURG – Schulenburg Lodge No. 14 heard a presentation from representatives of the Schulenburg Independent School District during the April meeting.

Making the presentation regarding the current bond proposal were Superintendent Lisa Meysembourg, Project Manager Robert Gadbois, FFA teacher Brad Lux and FFA members Rylie Lux, Dawson Dittrich and Kylee Zapalac.

Fort Worth Lodge to hold summer picnic June 5 FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge No. 33 will hold its annual picnic and pin presentation on Sunday, June 5, at Warren Park in Burleson.

Members are asked to bring cases of water to the picnic.

These will be delivered to the local police department. The officers need water just like the firefighters.

The lodge has reserved the pavilion from 2-6 p.m. for a meeting, pin presentation and then a meal. The lodge will furnish the burgers and hot dogs. Members are asked to bring desserts. There is an area where the children can play. Guests always are welcome so bring someone with you.

Members are asked to keep recommending new members. Call an agent or the Grand Lodge with the contact information. The lodge has a goal of five new members in 2016.

Columbia to host picnic June 11 DALLAS – Greetings from Columbia Lodge No. 66.

As spring rolls into summer and North Texas prepares for the heat, there is only one thing to do: PICNIC. Columbia Lodge will host its annual picnic on Saturday, June 11, from noon until 8 p.m. at the cabana and pool of Doug and Mary Caudill.

The lodge will provide hot dogs and hamburgers and a keg of Keystone Light.

Everyone is asked to bring dishes to go with a picnic meal, including dips, chips, salads, desserts and drinks for the children and adults.

Evelise Sandidge will be coordinating the food and cooking and protocol for this year’s picnic. Thanks go to her for volunteering for this task.

Lodge leaders are looking for new ways to raise money for the lodge’s benevolent work and to help with the upkeep of the hall. Dues account for some of the lodge’s income, but the lodge has to do things to make money. The annual fundraisers include the pancake

breakfast and SonsStock.

Speaking of SonsStock. It is planned for Aug. 13 at the Hall. Contact Lisa Byrne if you would like to have a booth or play music on the big stage. This is your chance to help the lodge and be a part of musical history, if not Columbia Lodge history.

Jean Ernst continues to mend and maybe soon will be able to attend a meeting.

Columbia Lodge lost a dear friend recently when Becky Cutler passed away due to ALS. Her sweet voice will be missed at the Thursday night jams. Hopefully her husband, Kelly, will soon be back in form at the Thursday night jams conducting the band and sharing the memories.

The Hall is getting a facelift or a floor lift and a wall lift.

Many thanks go to the volunteers who have scraped paint in the meeting room and now at the back door of the Hall. Soon the scraping will be completed and

a whole new batch of volunteers (hint hint) will be descending on the Hall to sand the recently scraped walls. After a sanding, a fresh coat or two of sealer will be applied and no more scotch tape, pins, paint or staples will ever puncture those walls again. This is an ongoing project started several years ago and spearheaded by Columbia Lodge President Bobby Wilbanks.

The floor has been stripped and awaits sanding to bring back the original wood floor.

The Hall will certainly look better when all this woodwork is finished. The last part of the wood stripping will be in the bar room. That will begin after the hallway is finished.

If you would like to volunteer to scrape or sand don’t hesitate to speak up and lend a hand. There is always room for more volunteers at the Hall.

The next First Friday is set for Friday, June 3. Come for the fellowship, pizza and suds at the Hall.

Hondo Victory has new members HONDO – Three new members were welcomed at the April 12 meeting of Hondo Victory Lodge No. 161. They are Johanna Marie Steubing, Kyla Ann Steubing and Aracely Vasquez.

Members agreed to make a $200 donation to Boy Scout Troop No. 370 to help the troop buy a trailer to carry supplies on camping trips. They also agreed to buy 150 poppies from VFW Post No. 3891. They will be

given to the Hondo Police Department and to nursing home residents in Hondo on Memorial Day weekend.

Several lodge members were scheduled to join hands with Dunlay Lodge No. 285 and other organizations for a trash pickup project in observance of Join Hands Day. The $200 Graduate Cash Drawing was scheduled for June 1.

The Cheer committee reported sending a get-well

A donation will be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church in memory of Evelyn Dawson.

Vineta to hold scholarship fund-raiser July 20 SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge No. 15 will hold a scholarship fund-raiser July 20 beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Home Association Rathskeller. A donation of $5 for sandwiches, ice cream and lots of desserts is asked.

The lodge mourns the passing of Mary Ann Niestroy, a member for 45 years; Eleanor Kircher, a member for 68 years; Jullienne Schmidt, a member for 65 years; Gladys Black, a member for 76 years; Ruth Helen Faucett, a member for 39 years; Janice Petray, a member for 49 years; and Eunice Petrich, a member for 72 years.

The lodge also mourns the passing of Elizabeth Raute.

She died April 16 after a long battle with cancer. Sister Raute became a member on Sept. 1, 1966. Her priorities in life were her faith, family and Hermann Sons. She was a dedicated member and always was willing to help in any way she could, playing the piano, cleaning or washing dishes. In his eulogy, her grandson talked about her determination and her

Vineta Lodge mourns passing of Elizabeth Raute SAN ANTONIO – Elizabeth Beyer Raute passed away Saturday, April 16, at the age of 86. Sister Raute was born Oct. 27, 1929, in Saspamco, Texas, and lived most of her life in San Antonio.

She had been a member

of Vineta Lodge No. 15 for 50 years. She also was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of the Ruth Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Charles.

Survivors include her chil-

dren, Janice Houghtling and husband William, Larry Raute and Susan Pawelek and husband Frank; a sister, Marian Lindenburg and husband Elroy; an aunt, Leona Honig; grandsons Charles, Kenneth and Jeffrey; great-grandchildren,

Alexis, Brianna, Edward, William Bryce and Charlie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 22, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment followed in Mission Burial Park South.

San Marcos will honor fathers, flag on June 6 SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge No. 26 will meet on Monday, June 6, at La Vista Retirement Home in San Marcos. Casseroles and salads will be served and Janice Kuhen will furnish ice cream for dessert. Fathers and the U.S. flag will be honored.

Siemering Lodge celebrates 125th anniversary SAN ANTONIO – Siemering Lodge No. 32 celebrated its 125th anniversary on Tuesday, May 10, in the San Antonio Home Association Ballroom.

Lodge members and guests from other area lodges attended.

The meal included chicken cordon bleu with potatoes, green beans, coleslaw and a roll. Desserts also were served.

President Ana Vasquez shared some history of the lodge.

Grand Vice PresidentFraternal Kim Krueger spoke about the lodge’s history and provided information about the camp and dance programs.

Member Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek provided information about the Riedel Wine Tasting Event scheduled for June 24. The event is a fund-raiser for the restoration of the stained glass window of Hermann the Cherusker that is in the Ballroom.

Laubach presents award

Virgil and Sharron Vogel received the Laubach Lodge No. 244 Humanitarian Award. At the March meeting, members received Easter eggs as attendance prizes.

Houston holds Family/Pioneer Day HOUSTON – Houston Lodge No. 100 held its annual Family/Pioneer Day on Sunday, April 24.

Members and guests assembled at the Sokol Hall for a games party, cake walk and the awarding of attendance and door prizes.

Numerous attendance prizes were won by Darrell and Judy Muske, Anne Palmer, Doris Falkenberg, Catherine Manchack, Diane Weikel, Hannah Anderson, Jackie Bushman and Pat Bushman.

The meal consisted of grilled burgers, hot dogs and sides. James Ellison prepared the meat on site.

Although there was less than a 20 percent chance of rain, it rained the entire time the meal was being prepared.

The June 13 meeting will include a potluck meal and desserts provided by members and the July 11 meeting will be a Dutch lunch, which was popular with members last year. For both meetings, the social time will begin at 6 p.m.

The meal will be served at 7 p.m. and will be followed by the meeting. Attendance prizes and birthday prizes will be awarded.

restrictions considered, and only contains fresh or frozen vegetables along with meat and sometimes pasta. The volunteer includes a short visit when the soup is delivered.

Pershing plans Missions baseball game outing SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge No. 160 will meet Wednesday, June 1, at 7 p.m.

The lodge will provide poor boy sandwiches, chips and a Father’s Day cake.

At the May meeting, Hermann Sons Youth Camp Executive Director Katie Klohn presented Callie DeWinne, a Pershing Lodge member and former camper, with her Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship.

Also present was Member Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek who talked about the Harmonia Lodge sponsored Riedel Wine Tasting Event to be held June 24.

She displayed the Riedel wine glasses that participants will be taking home after the event.

Welcomed as a new member was Veronica Collazo.

Chaplain Tony Valek reported on the passing of Lois Bryant Hatter, Denise Ann Lapsley, Helen Balmos, John Phillip Cook, Elizabeth J. Epp, Marjorie E Roehl, A.M. Smothers Jr. and Samuel Allen Walker.

Terri Armstrong reported that members and guests will be going to the San Antonio Missions baseball game on

Pershing Lodge members and friends of the lodge volunteered to set up parade chairs during the Fiesta parades held in downtown San Antonio in April. This is an annual event for the lodge.

The event is being held to raise money for the restoration of the stained glass window depicting Hermann that is featured in the ballroom of the Hermann Sons Home Association Building.

Converse Lodge No. 157 sponsored a team in the Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament in April. Team members were Travis Viator, John Moyers, Mike Muenchow and Jay Hart. The team tied for fourth place. The lodge will host its annual picnic on June 5 at the GRASP Center in Converse beginning at 3 p.m. The lodge will furnish the meal and members are asked to bring desserts.

Rutersville plans Family Fun Night RUTERSVILLE – Rutersville Lodge No. 152 will meet Wednesday, June 1. The lodge will furnish fried chicken and members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

Family Fun Night is scheduled for Saturday, June 25.

Fried fish will be served with members asked to bring a side dish and a dessert. Comfort to honor grandparents Members and guests of Comfort Lodge No. 2 who were celebrating birthdays and anniversaries at the April meeting are pictured. During the meeting the lodge presented the proceeds from the Carnival and Easter Egg Hunt to Comfort Youth Baseball representatives.

Marilyn Vogt, lodge member and agent, was among the agents honored at the annual Agents’ Awards Banquet on April 17 in League City near Houston. She qualified for the Grand President’s Club.

She said she had a nice trip and was able to leave the area before all the bad flooding took place.

The lodge met on May 6 and welcomed one new adult member and 10 new

junior members. They are Judith Beauford, Garrett Weaver, Alannah and Andres Guerra, Presley Holcomb, Korbin Pechacek, Marley and Reese Voulgaris, Allison Smith, Avery Spink and Kendall Harris.

Sister Vogt reminded members there is still time for campers to register online for Hermann Sons Youth Camp.

Graduating seniors who are members of Boerne Lodge were scheduled to receive their $250 scholarships at the Boerne Champion and Boerne High School Scholarship Night ceremo-

Six members of the lodge attended the Retirement Home’s 100th Anniversary Celebration on April 23.

Ross Murphy, a new resident at the Home, took some of the members on a tour of his room and highly praised the facility.

In honor of Mother’s Day, each woman present received a free meal voucher to the Rainbow Center for future dining.

Members and guests enjoyed homemade cookies and played a Mother’s Day word search game. Pamela Poulk was the winner of the game and received a prize.

Giddings Lodge awards three $500 scholarships GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge No. 54 approved three scholarships of $500 each during the April meeting. The scholarship recipients are Nicole Birnbaum, Cassidy Hirsch and Chance Fritsche.

The recipients and their families will be invited to the June 9 meeting.

Six new members were welcomed. They are Kenneth Pampell, Amara Lara, Thomas Birnbaum, Nicole Birnbaum, Kaiser Irwin and Wyatt Irwin.

Sympathy cards were sent to the family of Hershel Tomanetz and to Ricky Boswell following the passing of his father, Dick Boswell.

A get-well card was sent to Cynthia Booher. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Harry Namken and James Eichler.

A thank you note was received from Kaden Noe in appreciation of the lodge’s purchase of his hog at the Lee County Junior Livestock Show.

Cuero Family Lodge welcomes two new members CUERO – Cuero Family Lodge No. 82 will hold its next meeting June 7.

At the Tuesday, May 3, meeting, the lodge welcomed two new members, Jack Bauer and Levi Hopkins.

Loys Feldhausen from the Cuero Nursing and Rehabilitation Center spoke about the new music program for residents. The lodge made a donation to

the music program in observance of Join Hands Day. President Laura Tiffin announced a speaker from the Wounded Warriors Project would visit in June.

June Guenther read a list of members who will receive membership pins this month.

They are 50-year pin recipients, Mauri Pieper, a member since May 4, 1966; W.B. McClung Jr., a member

since May 5, 1966; and Eric Hanys, a member since May 9, 1966. The 60-year pin recipient is Elvera Gips, a member since May 1, 1956.

Herman Keseling, a member since May 28, 1946, will receive a 70-year pin.

Laura Tiffin reported the recent dance recital went well and the girls did an excellent job with their routines. She added that the costumes were fabulous.

Harold Tiffin reported on the Retirement Home’s 100th Anniversary Celebration saying it was a good time and the barbecue served was the best he has eaten.

Thanks go to Joyce Kahlich, Joyce Hotz, Karlyne Tiffin and Helen Lempa who all brought cakes for dessert.

DaCosta makes donation to food bank D A C O S TA – DaCosta Lodge No. 265 recently made a donation to the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent. President Geraldine Venglar presented the donation to Robin Cadle, president and CEO. They enjoyed the food, entertainment, fellowship and the presentation made by the Grand Lodge staff.

Produce from the community garden is donated to the local food pantry.

The lodge is supporting the garden in observance of Join Hands Day. Community Coordinator Nancy Hess is serving as the lodge’s chairman for the project.

Cibolo Lodge plans brisket meal to honor fathers CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge No. 147 will meet June 2 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1129 Pat Booker Road, Universal City. Brisket will be served and the ladies are responsible for all the desserts in honor of Father’s Day. Executive Camp Director Katie Klohn attended the May 5 meeting. She was there to present Zane Grey with his $1,000 Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship.

The lodge also is presenting scholarships this year.

They are going to Zane Gray and Emilie Shepherd.

Emilie is a senior at Steele High School where she has been a student athletic trainer for the past three years.

She has been a trainer for the football team for three years, for the girls’ soccer team for two years and this year she is a trainer for the baseball team that is currently in the playoffs. Emilie will study sports medicine in college.

The men prepared the desserts in honor of Mother’s Day. Cory Rakowitz’s Oreo cheesecake was named the top dessert. The side dish winner was Fay Fey’s cucumber salad.

Attendance award recipients were Cliff Shepherd and Zane Gray and the junior member winner was Bret Gray.

Joy Brown, center presented the Cibolo Lodge scholarships during the May meeting. This year’s recipients are Emilie Shepherd and Zane Grey.

Deanville honors Phillips with retirement party DEANVILLE – Several Deanville Lodge No. 301 members attended the Retirement Home’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in Comfort and reported having an enjoyable day.

At the April meeting, Janet Phillips was honored with a retirement party hosted by lodge members. She retired as postmaster of the Deanville Post Office and

from 12 years of service as secretary/treasurer for the lodge.

She will now make her home in Houston to be closer to her children.

The lodge will carry on the tradition of celebrating the Fourth of July, which falls on a Monday this year. There will be plenty of barbecueby-the-pound, games for adults and children, music

by Ed Kopecky and the Fun Time Czech Band, a sweet shop, barbecue sandwiches, silent auction and plenty of cold drinks. Come out and celebrate and meet new people or those you have not visited with since last year.

Corpus Christi will meet June 6 CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi Lodge No. 34 members gathered for a night out at Nolan’s in May. Executive Camp Director Katie Klohn was on hand to present Sabrina Hamm with her Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship. Sabrina is graduating from Bishop High School.

Two new junior members, Keeley Ray Mahan and Trinity Grace Patterson, were welcomed.

The Corpus Christi School of Dance will hold its recital on Saturday, June 4, at the Del Mar College Auditorium from 5 to 7 p.m.

Bexar sets picnic for July 9 SAN ANTONIO – Bexar Lodge No. 306 met Sunday, May 1, at Grady’s Barbecue and plans were made for the summer picnic on July 9.

Gay Hill Lodge meets June 2 GAY HILL – Gay Hill Lodge No. 193 will meet Thursday, June 2. Brian and Jennifer Lorenz and Robert and Shonda Ziese will serve hamburgers.

Members provided a potluck supper for the May meeting.

The Cheer Committee reported sending get-well cards to Walline Lorenz and

Mae Fischer. A thinking of you card was sent to Mouse and Judy Studhalter.

Agent Donnie Blinka reported on the Retirement Home’s 100th Anniversary Celebration that he attended in April.

The chicken fried steak supper was a success. A total of 180 people were served.
